Re: [RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-12 Thread Joe Bernard
The bottom line for me - which veers off into what *I* like cuz that's how
threads travel and I feel like I shouldn't keep guessing/presuming what Leah
wants - is Clems are awesome bikes and I think worthy of fancy wheels.

Which is going to translate to my upcoming custom, another frame I don't expect
to be particularly flyweight because I didn't order it that way. I had planned
to put basic wheels on and revel in the frame itself, but now (Leah's fault!) I
have that jones for the fanciness, too. James is going to be a busy
wheelbuilder soon!

I'm not sure what antihema means but I think the implication is that light
weight is somehow at odds with a comfortable, smooth, stable ride.
I don't think that is true. Though it may not be hard to build a sub 20lb
roadeo and it might not be reasonable to aim for a sub 20lb clem L, that
doesn't mean wanting the lightest clem L one can afford is nonsensical. Put
another way, wanting a lighter bike doesn't necessarily mean one wants the
ride and handling of a roadeo.

This is the only bike I have that has a name; she's called Big Baby and I was
riding this bike because I just got the new drip camo handlebar bag from Dark

My experience of the Roadini is that it feels like you're on a rail, like a

As I said weight reduction on ANY bike is a good thing, but my point is the
Clem certainly doesn't seem like it's designed with an eye towards weight
saving, it's designed around being a comfortable, smooth, stable ride & in
that context light weight is sort of antithema.

But, as I think about it, I guess it's the same process many of us have gone
through over the years played out in real time as we witness people think out
loud about their bikes, the evolution of their experiences with them and the
mental gymnastics of identifying issues & figuring out how to deal with them. I

almost anticipate where this is all going. In that sense many of us are sort of

Sometimes it's a bit like going to a scary movie; you're watching & thinking

Re: [RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-12 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch

Leah,

Consider this: The Susie Clem is … the Susie Longbolts!

It has the elegant, curved “top” tube of the Clem L, albeit a little higher.

You can get a 53 in the Rivendell (?) blue. (Is this the size you would
ride?)

It will take most any large tire up to 2.8” or 70mm

The 53 cmm size uses 650b wheels so you would continue to have
compatibility with the old and fancy new Clem L wheels. There’s a big
selection of wide and light tires, like the wide Schwalbe G-Ones, or
various 48s from Rene Herse or Panaracer or the WTB Horizon or ByWay 47s.
Most of these have a smooth center tread (with only minimal lugs on the
ByWays).

When I talked to Will about the Susie, he opined that it will be *lighter*
than an Appaloosa frame and fork! I'd guess that means lighter than the
Clem line.

I measured the head tube on the 53 as 23 cm long versus 16 cm for my 51 cm
Appaloosa (1st Gen.). This is important because any bar/stem combination
will be higher from the insertion point. So, easier to get the bars up.

I rode the demo on the street and really enjoyed it. It was swoopy, dreamy
and delightful enough that there's an orange 53 coming for me when the boat
gets here in May (fingers crossed).

Current price is higher than the Cheviot frames but it is laboriously
fillet brazed by hand at a number of joints, not tig-welded.

Best,

David Lipsky

Re: [RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-12 Thread ted
Hey Roberta,

As you wrote "It's a trade off between utility and weight, I know." you've
clearly got a good handle on this thing.
Years ago (when they stocked toe clips) I went by RBW to pick between
regular and long soma dual gate toe clips. As I was eyeing the two
alternatives the guy commented that they were "not light". I opined that if
I was gonna worry about weight I'd start by trying not to stuff so much
into my country bag (this was back in the baggins bags days). That drew a
large grin and talk morphed into what a great bag that was (and still is
for that matter).

BTW the banana bag is really nice. I've got one on the front of my least
"go fast" ish drop bar bike, and I'm really liking that set up.

I'm confident you'll have a fine time finding the perfect weight/utility
balance for you. It's always a personal optimum. Don't let anyone else tell
you you are wrong.
Next up, the search for just the perfect gearing/drive train (yet another
rabbit hole).

Hi, Ted.

According to website, he saddle saves 3/4 pound and the bag saves 1 1/4 pound.
What's *inside* the bag probably saved another 2 pounds. 😯 My big bags are
like junk drawers, having things in there , well, just because... and there's
room... The real reason I got a bigger bag was to put everything in one bag,
including topeak road morph G pump, which is quite long. I'll put that on my
two fish pump holder or lash it to the rack

I got the bigger bag also in case I wanted to go on a long ride and wanted to
pack a lunch (a few times), bring a blanket (never), have room to place my
shredded layers (often) when the sun came out. Reality is that I can lash all
that to my rack, being careful not to squish my sandwich. I'll be ok with a
smaller bag which won't be like a junk drawer, and you'll see at least one
carradice bag FS or trade shortly. I'm thinking about getting a banana sack.

It's a trade off between utility and weight, I know. I love the way my Joe A.
rides and Leah loves her Clem L. We're both looking for a practical medium.
It all started with getting better tires for a better ride. Then, dynamo with
new wheels. And then it morphed!

I have been loving these threads and everyone's posts. I have learned so much!
 Thank you.

Re: [RBW] In Praise of the Roadini

2020-04-12 Thread Patrick Moore
I've very definitely felt "tippy" on some bikes; notably certain otherwise
very nice mountain bikes (like my 1996, still-Santa-Cruz-made Bontrager
Race lite) and a certain Fuji Royale road bike, to name the 2 that come
immediately to mind and no, I didn't like that feeling either; the Rivs
have all felt the opposite -- "secure". In fact, come to think of it, that
Fuji only "came into its own" for handling when I put 20 lb in rear
panners; odd.

IME, a frame that makes you feel "in" the bike is by no means necessarily
slower, either in acceleration or in handling.

Anyway enjoy the new Roadini. And please do post a photo.

[RBW] Ideas for very unobtrusive and very QR saddlebag mounting system for non-Brooks saddles

2020-04-12 Thread Patrick Moore
With my grocery bike currently away from home, I've been using my stripped
down gofast with Camper Longflap strapped directly to saddle rails. This is
not a heart-rending or earth shaking need, but it would be nice to have
some sort of -- I guess -- saddle-mounted or seatpost-mounted QR with which
I could swap quickly back and forth between a Camper or say a large
Saddlesack, and a small, Banana Bag-sized kit carrier -- or, for that
matter, the Ruthworks wedge I now have.

I *do not* want a large clamp like the SQR bracket (I have several of
those) or even the Nitto QR mount, nor do I want something to clutter up a
wedge, though I certainly don't mind somewhat bulky hardware attached to a
large saddlebag.

And I do have a stash of the VO saddle bag loops.

I know that Carradice makes this:
https://www.carradice.co.uk/products/saddle-fixing-systems/carradice-classic-saddlebag-rack,
and I daresay one could rig it up with the VO loops, but they claim a 13 lb
limit and I'd like at least 20 lbs' capacity.

Oh, and my bar is too narrow for full Camper or medium Sackville fitment.

And I don't want to use a huge courier bag or backpack.

Ideas?

Thanks.

I’m no expert, but the experts that have seen the break said it was likely a
combination of poor mitering of the seat tube and lots of mashing on a single
speed by a big guy on a tall frame. For whatever reasons, it’s a relatively
common failure point in the Quickbeams. I’ll post photos in a bit.

As cool as the HHH is I wasn't expecting to have to replace the Ibis, but

to get home safely no problem (thank you, steel!). I figure, WTH, this

Hi Ryan,

68cm QB? Wow, that's a big 'un!

Funny you mention the Copenhagen wheel, those sounds slick! I considered
buying last December while they had a special deal on it, but couldn't
commit the $$.

My tandem just broke recently and I've got a Hubbuhubbuh on the way (!) If
I had a bigger garage there's no WAY I'd part with my QB

Cheers,

Isaac,

That is indeed a major bummer. If you do not find another you might call
Riv and see if the BB shells are available and send it off to a frame
builder (a fair number of them in Portland) and have it fixed. Although
not a cheap repair it will almost certainly be less than a replacement QB.

Just a thought

Bill,
If it is time to part with it or consolidate the fleet; however if you love the

Can be found Slightly used or NOS on EBay for $700-$1000 no reason to pay

I've done it with Carradice bags which have that "flopped down" look on the
back..this translates well to the bar position. Sackvilles are designed to sit
flat under the saddle, I think the position (I haven't tried it) would be
awkward up front.

I have a Hilsen badged Saluki (SA### stamped bottom bracket). Even sized pre

the consolidation. Largest 650b Hilsen is a 58cm.
I think most Saluki were side pull and the canti ones are kinda rare.

Some Salukis had mounts for side pull brakes and some had canti posts.

The geometry chart for the Saluki is on this page at the bottom:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/geometry.html

Yes, the Saluki was essentially a Hilsen with 650b tires. For a while,
Rivendell offered both. The Saluki name and graphics were for smaller
frames and the Hilsen for larger.

2020-04-12 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I think Keith's got the right idea, to put the heavy stuff up front on a step
through. That way the more than powerful Clem fork takes the weight alone.
Weight the back and there's the issue of frame flex, at least that's the
feeling I had on my step through Rosco B. I put 70lbs of groceries in low
riders and have a relatively fine ride home, I'd never try carrying that much
up high, front or back..

On the other hand 2” (51mm) tires seem like overkill for a light rider on
anything resembling a road or mup. Going to 1.75” (45mm) seems like a good call
for non Clydesdale folks not bombing over ruts and boulders. Heck 1.5” (38mm)
would probably work fine, even if they might look a bit lost in all that
clearance.

[RBW] For sale: 64cm Quickbeam

2020-04-12 Thread Bill Rhea
This bike is first complete bike I bought from Riv. It's been ridden for
lots of enjoyable miles over the years (mostly as a fixed gear commuter)
but it's not in the rotation these days. This bike needs a rider!

I still really love this bike (!) but I need more gears for my current
needs, and it's time to clear garage space. Looking for a good home for
this Queen of Caltrain (TM)

Photos here
.

   - Sturmey-Archer S3X 3-speed fixed hub on a Velocity Dyad 36H rim with
   Wheelsmith spokes
   - 32H Suzue sealed front hub with Araya rim (original)
   - Nitto Noodle bars 46cm, 10 cm NItto stem, Shimano brake levers.
   Elkhide bar wrap, sewn on.
   - Tektro cantilevers (the wide ones)
   - Sugino cranks, 46T with chainguard
   - 16T cog
   - Berthoud 50mm stainless steel fenders with leather flaps
   - Nitto steel front rack with Riv/Nitto Platrack and Wald basket

Stuff *not* included:

   - seat
   - Nitto rear bag support

*Extra stuff* for this bike included that's not in the photos:

   - Original rear QB wheel with Suzue flip-flop hub
   - White Industries DOS Eno freewheel, 16Tx18T
   - Brand new barcon shifter for S3X, still in bag
   - Tool for removing S3X hub innards (which are one-piece and easy to
   swap out

*Full disclosure items*:

   - The first QB I bought was an early green one. That frame broke after
a few years, and Riv graciously replaced it with this orange one. No
damage or cracks I know of on this one. Rides great!
   - Yes, there is a B&M dyno tailight on the rear fender, but no dyno hub
   wheel is included with sale.
   - Note the beusage on one of the downtube decals, that little piece of
torn decal still flappin' in the breeze ;-) This bike has good paint but
is not without the nicks and scratches you'd expect on a bike that has
gotten regular use. It has a few bits of reflective tape on it too.
   - The S3X is working more reliably as a 2-speed (med-high) than a 3. I
never got around to installing the new shifter for it, which may remediate
this. I hand built the wheel per the Wheelsmith technique I learned years
ago when I worked there. This wheel is plenty straight and tough, so it's
worth just changing the innards on the S3X if that's what it ultimately
needs for you to get all 3 gears. Or you can run it as a single speed with
   the flip flop wheel (included)

Asking $1,150 OBO.

I'm in Napa, CA. Bay Area potential buyers: I'm willing to drive 1/2 way
to where you are for delivery. If it has to be shipped, buyer pays for
professional packing and shipping.

Thanks for playing!

Re: [RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-12 Thread Leah Peterson
No, Mas, I don’t agree - I can’t see myself selling this bike. Well, if they
came out with a Susie Clem then MAYBE.

The bike isn’t THAT heavy. I love the bike, actually. It’s the most comfortable
bike I’ve ever ridden. It just needs to lose a few pounds, and I think with its
new wheels, it will. I *can* manage it at its current weight, but I like
knowing I don’t have to. I’m making a great bike greater.

There are so many people who have fallen in love with the Clem L - you can’t
find them for sale on the used market and Riv sells out of them in their
pre-orders. Velouria (formerly of Lovely Bicycle, who has resurrected her blog
under a new name) recently said she exclusively rode her black Clementine
through pregnancy. I think those things speak volumes about these bikes. Also,
I welcome the extra strength I’m developing. On my new Top Secret Trail there
is a section where I have to cross a busy road and get across a median filled
with large rocks. I have to lift my entire bike and RUN across that road, up
over the median, and continue running with it over the other lane and then set
it on top of the curb where my path restarts. It’s good for me!

Is the Clem L long and is it stout - yes and yes. But I can work with these
qualities because I love so many other attributes the bike offers. I don’t want
people to think of the Clem L as a dead weight, it really isn’t. It’s lively in
its own way. Fits like a comfortable pair of jeans. Is pleasing to my eye -
IT’S SPARKLY BLUE, FOR PETE’S SAKE.

Leah

2020-04-12 Thread Joe Bernard
"I applaud your efforts, but it's a bit like buying a chunk of lead &
complaining that it weighs too much."

I doubt you intended it, but that seems a little harsh. Nobody is trying to
make an ultralight Clem (and she *is* getting a different bike later), Leah's
just looking to improve a bike she already likes as is.

As I've said elsewhere in this thread I agree a Clem L isn't a good candidate
for the full gram reduction program - it's always going to be a stout frame way
overbuilt for her - but lighter/fancy wheels and tires go the longest way

The Pasela is a great, reasonably light, and not too expensive tire, but it
is a bit narrow for a Clem/Clementine.

A bit like putting Pumps on a linebacker

For true weight weeniedom you need to get out a kitchen scale and weigh the bag
and saddles. I suspect leaving off the bag saves more weight than swapping to a
no spring saddle.

2020-04-12 Thread masmojo
It's always good to make the bike as lite as possible, but as others have
pointed out the Clem is a Big, Heavy, Cushy bike; that's sort of it's
defining characteristic.

I applaud your efforts, but it's a bit like buying a chunk of lead &
complaining that it weighs too much.

Now that you are looking at weight; I'm afraid the ultimate conclusions
will be you need a lighter bike. ;-O

Was unusual for this frame to be made without canti posts? or there were
just different runs?
Does anyone know the standover for the 56 with presumably the max tires
under fenders? This frame was essentially a 650b proto hilsen if I
remember correctly?
Were there any differences?
How is it different from a Bleriot?

Lightening our Rivendells...it’s what #RivSisters are doing this year. Yes,
Annie, I think you’re going to be so pleased, even with a little weight
savings. Roberta switched out her saddle yesterday from sprung to not sprung
and was amazed just at how great a difference that made.

I never thought I’d see a thread on the List about counting grams, but here we
are.

Annie, I know you don’t have the sparkles in your blue but was there ever a
creamier, lovelier blue? I think not. Please let us know when you make your
changes and how it turns out for you!

[RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-12 Thread anniebikes
Leah, I've always thought the stock Clem L is a bit weighty. Mine is the 2016
version so I think it's the shorter version (though not the prettier sparkly
blue color like yours). But still it's heavier than I want it to be. Sure, it
climbs well, can haul weight, and is super on dirt roads. This year I'm
concentrating on lightening my bike by namely swapping tires and tubes. After
reading others tires suggestions here, I'm going with my favorite Panacer
Pasela PT tire. Not only does the gumwall version visually appear less hefty
but 1.75" width is slightly narrower than 2" , also coming in at 480-500gr like
the thunder burts. I will also swap the Bosco bar for something else just
because I need something less upright with various hand positions with less
rise - not sure this switch will shave any weight. Enjoying all the suggestions.
