Re: [RBW] Lambda Add-ons

2023-01-23 Thread R. Alexis
Thanks for posting this pic. I didn't know that Rivendell had the Grip
Monarch/King pedal wings made and in stock. Been waiting for them to mount
on the Grip Kings I have. Went ahead and ordered the Silver 2 shifters and
mounts while I was at it. Should be here tomorrow.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Eric,

Nice build! Very well thought out. Nice video on the build also. Been
looking at bike builds on YouTube. Yours is one of the better ones. Have
fun on it.

Thanks,

 Hi all — I just finished up a build, it's a 1985 Bridgestone MB-2. I
have a full build video up over here: https://youtu.be/gJPnbpzjbKg

I purchased the bike as a complete from Marketplace, it was stock but
for the saddle and tires. Everything was removed and I passed the frame
over to Rob Gassie at Bing Bicycles. He added some rack mounts to the fork
and seat stays, changes some the cable guides, added a third bottle boss
 to
the downtube and two additional bottle bosses to the underside. He also
stripped the frame to raw steel.

Instead of paint I went for a raw finish. There are two applications of
patination acids, with and without heat, followed by clear lacquer and wax.

It's built up with a mix of parts from across time, all silver.
De-anodized some black Paul cantilevers and also de-anodized an XTR
RD-M952. Dead stock WTB grease guard headset purchased from Jacque Phelan.
Lots of Suntour, some TA cranks and modern parts from Japan. Crust x Nitto
Shaka bars, MKS bear trap pedals, Nitto cable hanger.

I had some custom brass headbadges made with the old Bridgestone logo
 which I shaped and finished.

Velocity Atlas 26" wheelset with a Kasai dynamo hub up front and an XTR
M900 in the rear. Front wheel by Rich at Rivendell, rear built by Andre at
my local bike shop. I'm running Rene Herse extra-light tires with a Rat
Trap Pass in the back and a Humptulips Ridge in front.

Many thanks to members here for helping out with parts when I needed

There is definitely some detective work to be done on these bikes,
since the seller doesn't seem to know anything about them.

The Rambouillet looks off, but in a way I think I can guess at
explaining. Ram's were by definition 700c bikes with medium reach brakes
and fit 700x32 tires or thereabouts. This one has very chubby tires and
long reach brakes with pads at the very ends of the slots. That makes me
suspect that is a 650B converted Ram. Rams came in even cm sizes, and
 that
head tube height makes me guess it is maybe a 62cm. It's maybe a 60cm,
 Almost definitely not a 58.

Assuming the orange Rivendell Custom is around the same size, those are
probably 26" wheels. That's my guess

The dark grey cantilever Hilsen is sort of off-menu, because it has
cantilevers. The wheels also look smallish. My guess is that was
 actually
the largest Canti-'Luki (Saluki), which would have been a 62cm. Then,
 when
the owner wanted a repaint, the Saluki decals weren't around, but Hilsen
ones were. The Saluki became the 650B Hilsen around 2010.

 Those are lovely lovely bikes.

[RBW] FS: Esbit cooksets

2023-01-23 Thread Franklyn Wu
I have a couple of Esbit cooksets for sale:

   1. Esbit aluminum alloy cookset CS985HA

.

It can be used with both solid fuels as well as Esbit alcohol stove. It
doesn't come with the stove (you can get it or any other similarly
dimension stove for not very much). Lightly used, comes with the carry bag.
   $25 + shipping.
   2. Esbit alumnum alloy cookset CS585HA

.

This is for solid fuels only. This is the 585ml version. The solid fuel
receptacle is a little jagged but still usable. Will include 4-6 solid fuel
   tablets. $10 + shipping.

[RBW] Re: Nice Rivendell, Goodrich and Sevens for Sale

2023-01-23 Thread Joe Bernard
Yes, I was trying to guess at what kind of custom Curt Goodrich had built.
You're probably right that it's a sport tourer; I've always liked his 'own
brand' work and would love to score one someday.

2023-01-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
"he couldn't read the tire sizes (I did ask),"

Ask him if he can read the names of the tires. The two Hilsens and the
Goodrich have Compass/Rene Herse tires on them with a clearly readable
label. The name of the tire guarantees the size. Barlow Pass, Snoqualmie
Pass, Babyshoe Pass, etc.

[RBW] Re: Nice Rivendell, Goodrich and Sevens for Sale

2023-01-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
Joe

I'm not super clear on what you are asking me to guess about regarding the
Goodrich. I don't know anything about Goodrich models, or if there is such
a thing as a Goodrich model. If they are all custom, then my guess is that
the bike pictured with Goodrich decals is in fact a frame made by Curt
Goodrich. The lugs look "early Rivish", and I know Curt Goodrich made a
lot of the early custom Rivendells. Maybe it's an early Riv custom, Curt
made it, and then the buyer wanted Curt to repaint it, with Goodrich
decals.

It doesn't look like a cyclocross race bike to me, like a Legolas, for
example. It looks more like a sport-touring rig, like maybe it's trying to
be a lighter version of an early 2000s 700c Atlantis.

[RBW] FS: Tumbleweed Rack, Jones Bar, Schwalbe Tires

2023-01-23 Thread Joe D.
Get in touch if you're local to Helena, MT and want to meet and check any
of this out (and save some shipping cash).

Tumbleweed Rack: For sale is the Tumbleweed Mini Pannier Rack, the 355mm
version (that's the height from the lower eyelet to center of platform).
The platform is 120mm wide by 300mm long. You can google "bikepacking.com
tumbleweed mini pannier rack" and read all about it, and check out the
Tumbleweed bike website for more info.

I had it on a bike last Spring and Summer, but only ever carried a load on
it once, sadly. Ended up doing more family bikepacking and used the cargo
bike instead of my mountain bike with this rack. Now I've moved away from
the rack setup. It also comes with extra mounting struts. This would clear
a 4.75" fat tire.

These retail new for $140. I'll sell for $100, shipped. This thing needs to
be used!

Jones Bar: For sale is a lightly used Jones H-Bar Bend, 710mm wide. Some
slight scuffs from brake levers, etc. This have only been on like 5 miles
of actual single track, mostly just gravel and forest service roads.
They're super comfortable. I have a different bike now and I don't need as
much sweep, so I want to pass them along. I only used them last summer and
fall. Also included are the Jones Kraton grips and unused, still-in-box
Jones H-Bar tape.

Bars retail new for $85, grips for $22, and tape for $12.

I'll sell the whole bundle for $75, shipped.

Schwalbe Tires: Schwalbe Big Ben tires, Performance Line, Racegaurd, 26 x
2.1. They've handled everything from asphalt to mellow gravel/dirt. I rode
them last summer and fall for maybe 200 miles. There's a ton of life left.
I'm only selling because I'm giving a 2.5 tire a try.

$35 for the pair, shipped.

Thank you, Bill. I got off the phone with him a bit ago, and he couldn't

[RBW] Re: Nice Rivendell, Goodrich and Sevens for Sale

2023-01-23 Thread Bill Lindsay
There is definitely some detective work to be done on these bikes, since
the seller doesn't seem to know anything about them.

The Rambouillet looks off, but in a way I think I can guess at explaining.
Ram's were by definition 700c bikes with medium reach brakes and fit 700x32
tires or thereabouts. This one has very chubby tires and long reach brakes
with pads at the very ends of the slots. That makes me suspect that is a
650B converted Ram. Rams came in even cm sizes, and that head tube height
makes me guess it is maybe a 62cm. It's maybe a 60cm, Almost definitely
not a 58.

Assuming the orange Rivendell Custom is around the same size, those are
probably 26" wheels. That's my guess

The dark grey cantilever Hilsen is sort of off-menu, because it has
cantilevers. The wheels also look smallish. My guess is that was actually
the largest Canti-'Luki (Saluki), which would have been a 62cm. Then, when
the owner wanted a repaint, the Saluki decals weren't around, but Hilsen
ones were. The Saluki became the 650B Hilsen around 2010.

Those are lovely lovely bikes.

[RBW] Re: Back On A Platypus

2023-01-23 Thread Jared Wilson
Hey Tom,

Thanks for the love! So glad to hear you're also aboard a 60cm mermaid,
dreamy aren't they?

I was able to squeeze what I believe are the VO 63mm fluted fenders over
the 2.1's on my wife's Platypus with just a hair of room, so I'd think the
50mm GravelKing's would fit nicely under the same fenders (only 2mm larger
than Riv recommends, which is generally on the conservative side).

Gearing is 44/36/22 right now with a 24 granny gear en route, it was the
only ring I didn't replace when setting things up and it's giving me
trouble so I'll be swapping it out later this week. 17t Wolf Tooth aluminum
cog with GearClamp single speed conversion and a Paul Melvin round out the
rest of the drivetrain.

I was 1x9 for almost all my other Rivendells and I'm thrilled with this set
up, it's like a more refined version of my old SimpleOne.

I'm not sure I'd take it all the way with going fixed on a Platypus, but
the 3x1 seems to be a winner for my application.

Keep us posted with what you decide to do!

Jared

Re: [RBW] Re: Fendering My Atlantis

2023-01-23 Thread brizbarn
Nice job. Incase anyone else is doing a similar fender job, I used a
shradder valve cap as a spacer at the chain stay bridge fender mounting
point to get better fender/wheel alignment. Drilled a hole in the closed
side and its a perfect fit.

[RBW] FS: Baggins Bags - Banana Seat Bag and Candy Handlebar Bag Set

2023-01-23 Thread Michael Ullmer
I've got two Baggins bags for sale I'm selling as a set:

The Banana Bag shows the most wear/beausage/patina. No rips in the fabric,
just well used. The leather piping shows some cracks and there's some
reflective red rape on some of the leather. Stiffener along the top of the
bag is present. Overall the bag is darker than the Candy Bag. The Candy bag
is in much better shape, shows a lot less use. I believe these were both
made by Duluth Pack back in the day.

Looking for $100 net to me

Pics here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/AcCS4HqUancMnRdq5

Thanks!

You take a p-clamp, some spacers and modify a Nitto strut and
you've got a pump peg somewhere you might not have had one before.
 Will
likes to put his in the rear triangle and you'll notice them mounted

This is great, I love it, cool hack! But I've always wanted for a
version that doesn't require tracking down and destroying a Nitto
 strut.
Riv HQ is probably awash in Nitto struts and they have em poking out
 of the
coffee cans on everyone's desk all over the place. But not so for me,
 Nitto
struts are precious few in my shed.

I think I came up with the right shape and this weekend I picked up
an electrical ring terminal in the 10-12 size, yellow sleeve.

[image: Screen Shot 2023-01-17 at 9.56.39 PM.png][image: Screen
 Shot 2023-01-17 at 9.56.44 PM.png]

Holding the ring end with one pair of pliers you can easily remove
the yellow sleeve with a second pair of pliers. A pack of 15 is $4.50.
 If
your local hardware store has a bulk/loose hardware section you can
 get one
for around 55¢ (at least I did).

 Paired with a 3/8" insulated cable clamp (2 for $2.20), a few
serrated brake washers, an M5 bolt and a nylock nut I had a fashioned
 a
pump peg. Didn't have to cut or shape any metal or destroy any
 high-end
 Japanese rack struts.

I have yet to SUPER TEST this out but wanted to share all the same.

[RBW] Nice Rivendell, Goodrich and Sevens for Sale

2023-01-23 Thread matt miller
Hey all. A local STL fellow just posted some bikes

for sale locally. I just talked with him and am going to go look at them.
There are a couple frames I'm not familiar with. Since this is where all
the experts are, is there anything I should be looking for? I assume the
grey AHH and the brown Ram are custom paint jobs. Is the orange one likely
custom or an early Riv? And thoughts on the Goodrich? They all look to be
fairly similar builds, and I'm wondering if nothing differentiates when I
ride them, if I should consider anything else before buying (assuming the
boss OKs it. Ha). I do see the brakes are different on the AHH models.
Thanks, everyone.

[RBW] Re: Back On A Platypus

2023-01-23 Thread Tom Palmer
Hi Jared,
Love your Platypus. I have a mermaid 60cm that I am smitten with. How much
room for fenders over the 50cm gravel kings? What is your gearing on the
3x1 setup? I am running 1x10 now, but I ride a lot of single speed and some
fixed gear on other bikes. The way mine rides, it seems to beg for a fixed
gear setup. It will be effort and expense with the vertical dropouts to go
fixed. I may just do a 3x1 like yours for now and see if that will satisfy.

Re: [RBW] Re: Paul home polish

2023-01-23 Thread George Schick
To the question about clear coating a product after polishing: after
working it over with Simichrome polish as Laing says you can clear coat it
with a couple of applications of Protectaclear using a foam "brush."
Eventually this will wear off, too, and you will need to remove any
residual coating with Xylene before re-polishing and re-coating. I have a
brass bell on one of my bikes that gets this treatment every so often and
it holds up pretty well.

Oh, and I fully agree with Laing about the patina, beausage, and rusted.

You cannot paint polished parts and have the paint stick well - polishing
makes the surface too smooth for the paint to grip.

In my mind. if you want silver, especially polished silver, any type of
coating beyond waxing defeats the whole purpose of polishing. Cleaning
polished parts is easy.

Note that Velocity will polish rims before anodizing for an extra cost for
a very impressive colored finish.

To me, patina is just another word for lazy and not maintained. Beausage is
another word for abused. Rusted is not "original". With a few exceptions,
nobody sells new rusted bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Exploration: Make your own pump peg

2023-01-23 Thread Eric Marth
How do you like them Mafac tandems? I like those hangers, good looking
hangers. Wish I had some.

Absent a pump peg mount I do think that using the QR skewer is the
best, so elegant and minimal. I read about that on iBOB and it really got
me. Then I forgot about it. I'll have to see if I can make that work.

Wes: It's not necessarily better! It's just an idea I executed to see
if it would work. I definitely prefer the brazed-on pump peg. That said,
there might be some interference between the front derailer cable and the
pump when mounted behind the seat tube. I actually can't tell. Haven't had
any shifting issues but I can't get a good line of sight and have been too
lazy to crawl under the bike or flip it over to truly investigate.
