Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!
P.S. Kate, I'm with Vince on this one. If you are used to drops the Choco does offer better hand positions, especially if you don't need them up high. I've used Albatross bars a bunch but I have always come back to the Chocos (especially inverted). Every time I ride Albatross bars I end up putting my hands all the way forward and they just aren't as comfortable there as they are on the Choco. Albatross wins for style, Choco wins for function. Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!
I think it really all depends on where you like to put your hands. I love the Billie Bars too, because I like to move my hands back and forth. My wife only ever seemed to hold the end of the Boscos on her 52 Clem (10cm stem), so when I put her Platypus together I had two options ready: more Boscos on a 12-13cm Tallux or Albatross on an 85cm fillet brazed flaceplater. In the end I chose the Boscos for aesthetic purposes. No doubt I would have had to max out the stem to make the Billies or Chocos work. Rise was as big a factor as reach for her. You can accomplish the same thing a few different ways. With respect to the hand positions on the Boscos, that forward position seems to work best when the bars are angled down a good bit and/or low enough. Tom I noticed the same thing when trying to put the same kickstand on my wife's Platypus. I may have been able to squeeze it in but it would have rubbed the tire anyway so I didn't bother trying. [RBW] Re: Update on my tire question
That bike looks awesome! I have a 59 Clem H in Grilver. Love it. It's slowly starting to look like something from Mad Max. I am curious about the tire width though. Those rims look like the stock DM24s, which are a hair wider than the Cliffhangers I use. I mounted Antelope Hills on them and they measured 56mm (slightly wider than advertised). Mine are tubeless though. Maybe that has an impact on the width. Either way, glad you like 'em. Great tires. I hope some day you get the chance to try tubeless. I won't be going back to tubes on any of my larger tires. Enjoy! Bones On Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 9:21:06 PM UTC-4 cycli...@gmail.com wrote: > Sharp looking bike. [RBW] Re: 700c Wheel recommendations
I've used 700c Dyads, Atlases, and Cliffhangers on my 62 Appaloosa and 62 Sam. I'm a pretty lean fella. On the Sam I definitely preferred the Dyads, being more of a roadish bike and having 44mm tires. But for the Appaloosa (and my Clems for that matter) I pretty much swear by Cliffhangers now. The Atlas is an excellent rim but in my opinion you get more with the Cliffhanger. The weight difference as compared to the Atlas is really negligible, especially if you go tubeless on the Cliffhangers. And if you don't want to, well you can down the road if you change your mind. The Cliffhangers are stiffer and they also work great with the range of tire widths that I have found to be ideal for the Appaloosa (48-54ish). Bonus: you get some extra width from the tire as compared to the Atlas. Good Luck! Re: [RBW] daily post ur riv
Brendonoid, thanks. I've only had it for a few months now but so far I am enjoying it. I wanted something a bit different from my other bikes, and I'd never ridden a rando-ish bike before. I use it primarily as my work commuter. I carry it up and down stairs when I get to work so it checked a lot of boxes for me: it is smaller and leaner than the Hillborne I was using, front rack-able, fender-able with decent tire clearances, and has a threaded headset. It feels plenty quick, comfortable with the albatrosses and it's fun to ride. In an email back in early September, Will mentioned that they have lengthened the chainstays on the newest Sams. The 60cm now has 48.5cm chainstays... which is pretty close to the 61.5 Homer (49cm). Makes sense to me. I ride around with two kids on my bike all the time (first an Appaloosa with one kid in front and one in back, now a Clem L with an xtracycle). They both cruise like Impalas. On the other end I stripped the stock wheels off my Clem H and put on some cliffhangers + thunderburts tubeless and saw a night and day improvement in handling while unloaded. Please let us know what else you decide to tie to your bicycle. Brilliant. Re: [RBW] Re: Winter Tire Recs
I picked up a pair of these last year in 700 x35: https://www.schwalbetires.com/marathon_winter_plus Mild winter last year and I didn’t get to use them once! But last week I slapped em on my single speed and rode them to work every day (through snow and ice). I had a blast! They aren’t cheap, and I won’t get to use them much, but I guess that means I should have them for a long time. I have ridden Snoqualmie ELs, 38 Shikoros, and 50 Cazaderos pretty extensively and I’d recommend any one of them, love em all. If you want a little more puncture protection get some Shikoros, they are almost as smooth as the Rene Herse. If you see mixed terrain, get the Cazaderos. [RBW] Re: Wanted: Appaloosa 60cm pics with big tires, thoughts on upright riding position
Thanks! I think it's the algae slowly climbing up the back of my house that really makes the Grilver pop! To me they are pretty much the same bike, though the Clem's geometry is closer to the newer Appaloosa's. I love those bullmoose bars but when I put them on my Appaloosa (62.5 TT) they felt too close. On the Clem (65.5 TT) they feel just right. I could probably consolidate both bikes with one of the newer Appaloosas since they have longer TT and apparently have wider clearances too. [RBW] Re: Inverted Riser Bars Question
I have chocomooses and chocos. The mooses are made inverted, but I've used the chocos both ways. I prefer them inverted, so I generally stick with the mooses because they are inverted without raising the stem halfway to the moon. My hands feel an ergonomic advantage to the inverted upward bend of the bar, but it is not a night and day difference. When I had a child seat on the front I need the extra stem length, so I used the chocos. [RBW] Re: Tubing between Clem H, Atlantis
I do not own an Atlantis but I do have a Clem H (59), Appaloosa (62) and Sam (62). You already know the answer but its all in the setup. My Clem is a stripped down trail bike. It has Cliffhangers (tubeless) with 2.25 Thunderburts, bullmoose bars, and no racks. It does not feel any heavier than my Sam, and it feels just as fast. I have tossed around the idea of trading my Clem H for an Atlantis but I think the truth is that they are functionally equivalent, one is just fancier. I imagine that if you set up an Atlantis with the same components that you have on your Clem now, it would feel about the same. I think some component changes are the best first step. If you want it to be much lighter/quicker, you will need to remove all the parts that make it a useful utility bike though. I think my Appaloosa has the same role your Clem has now, and it works great for that. Bones -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Clem H + Xtracycle
Wow, lots of useful info, thanks everyone. I'm as confused as ever on which way to go though :) Now I'm wondering how the an xtracycle would work on my Appaloosa. The chainstays are a little bit shorter and it's a double top tube so that could only help with stability. To date that bike has been the heavy lifter anyway. The only real appeal of the the leap kit is to save some money and not add another bike to my collection. A BD of BFD would certainly be the best way to go. One last option is a 10 year old Novara 29'er that's been sleeping in my shed for a few years. It's in great shape, and I was intending to offload that at some point, but maybe that would make a good candidate for a conversion. Bottom line is the cargo bike will get lots of use, and I want to love riding it as much as I have enjoyed riding my Appaloosa. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Mine is a 59. And yes thanks for the feedback on the ride quality. I’ve read similar things in the past. Part of the reason I was thinking of using the Clem is because it is a nice sturdy frame. [RBW] Clem H + Xtracycle
Not sure if this has been discussed here or not, but I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this. I spent all of last year carrying both of my kids on my Appaloosa (one in front, one in back). They are getting too big for that setup now. Though I can still handle the bike with ease, I think 80lbs is a bit too much for the bike, and it is only going to get worse. So my options, so far as I can see, are the following: 1) Get a bike trailer (Burley or Thule or whatnot) 2) Big Dummy or Big Fat Dummy. 3) Add an Xtracycle to my Clem H I like the idea of using the Clem the most because I really don't want to bring another bike or trailer into the house if I can help it, and I really like the Clem. So far it has been used as a trail bike, and with a few small children around, that means it doesn't get used that often. And that is a job my Appaloosa can easily fill. I have no experience with the Xtracycle leap kit though, so any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Another option I've considered is moving around my current cranks. My Hillborne has largely become my work commuter, and with a 7.5mi round trip commute, the silver triple it came with is surely overkill. Thanks for the input. Makes me wonder if I should try to use the Sugino crank after all. The limiting factor is that it’s 130bcd, and as far as I can tell that limits me to a 38t inner. Maybe that’s good enough. Then the question is what to use for a big ring. Is 46t too close? 50t seems maybe too big for me, but maybe not. And I’ve seen those IRD cranks before, they are beautiful indeed. And if I end up looking at a new crank I will strongly consider those. I’m a sucker for aesthetics.
