[RBW] Contemplating herd thinning to all-26"
Fellow Riv-freaks: As my life and my bicycling style both evolve, some things have become evident. Chief among them is that, of all my bikes, I tend to ride just two the most: 1. My Surly Big Dummy (no matter what BQ says, I really like mine); and2. My 1999 Riv All-Rounder (an acquisiting from another Riv-freak several years ago). The former is absolutely necessary for hauling my guitar and amp to gigs, not to mention groceries. The latter is my daily transportation. I had promised the previous owner that I would "ride the crap out of it", and that is basically what I've been doing since I set it up for city riding. I have two other bikes that I don't ride so much anymore. One is the singlespeed mountain bike I've raced on for the last three years, and since I'm fairly certain I won't be racing anymore (my knees can't really handle singlespeed and I don't want to race anything else) the former bike will probably go this year. The latter is my 700c-wheeled LongLow, a bike I've had since 1999 and which I ride less and less as my style and needs change. I am more emotionally attached to this bike than practically so, and I'd like to hear from other folks who have become fans of an all-26"-wheeled stable. When did you do it and why? [RBW] FS: Shimano Service Guides
I am unloading some stuff that's been sitting around and I will not need it anymore: 1. Shimano service books/catalogs/guides. These are listings of components, including blow-up diagrams, compatibility info and and part numbers for shop mechanics to service Shimano components. I have these from the following years: 1987 (complete, in 3-ring binder)1988 (complete, in 3-ring binder)1999 (complete, modules in a box set)2003 & 2004 (paperback books, drilled for 3-ring and probably intended to fit into an large, earlier-year binder. I'd like to sell them to someone into older Shimano. I got them from the shop of the guy I apprenticed with, and after close to 20 years in the bike biz I am ready to let them go.If you are interested please contact me and make an offer for the lot, plus Media Mail postage. [RBW] New Tire Trial: Rubena V66 Flash APS
For the last few weeks I've been trying out a new city/commuting tire: Rubena's V-66 Flash APS ("Anti-Puncture System"), 26 x 1.75.It is vaguely similar in look and tread pattern to the old-style Schwalbe Marathon (before they changed both their tread and their compound this last year). It also costs about half of what the Marathon retails for. Having ridden the 1.75 for awhile now I may be inclined to go down to the narrower 1.5 just to see if there's a noticable difference in ride feel. It certainly doesn't feel as sluggish as the newer version of the standard Marathon and so far I haven't had any flats. Given the choice in terms of ride quality and wear, the Rubena seems to be a decent tire for the money and I think I'd opt for it over the Marathon. http://www.rubenatires.com/v66-flash/ I haven't talked with anyone who's running these in 700c yet but if anyone is and wants to chime in, feel free. [RBW] Ride Report: Starlight Parade
Sweetie had been off her bicycle for the better part of a year, battling knee issues and other stuff. This spring she began a walking and stretching regimen, and got some new walking shoes which have helped her knee issues. Last weekend, she asked if we could go for a ride. We enjoyed a meandering 8.5 miles around inner Northeast Portland. Last night, we rode into town for the StarlightParade, the event that officially kicks the civic mayhem we call Rose Festival. It was in the mid-60's and cloudy when we left the house, riding aong residential streets designated as Bike Boulevards and down North Vancouver Avenue's bike lane. Late-spring irises bloomed in every shade from bright yellow to whorish eggplant. Starlings, resplendent in their summer speckles, swarmed in yards; cats yawned lazily from porches as we rolled past. Sweetie pointed out beautiful yards, raised beds and fancy front doors (we dream of remodeling way out in that vast realm of Someday), and we noted with delight the appearance of a new Indian food cart at Commercial Street. The sky overhead swirled with rapidly changing cloud formations, and the sun broke through at times with long rays that we said looked like the "fingers of God". There was a delightful, gentle breeze as we crossed the Willamette River over the Broadway Bridge. The water was still pretty high from all the spring rains, but the sun broke through long enough for me to see the pale green of the St Johns Bridge way off in the distance. We wound our way into downtown, locked up the bikes near the art school and walked the eight blocks to our agreed-upon perch. Bike Buckets from Citybikes (http://www.citybikes.coop/parts/buckets/) carried our dinner and cushions; they made decent seats from which to watch the festivities. We laughed and clapped at the marching bands and electric-light festooned floats that passed by while little kids in front of us slapped high-fives with the policemen and Royal Rosarians walking along the route. Wanting to get out of downtown just ahead of the crowds, we ducked out a few entries before the end of the parade, making sure to stick around for the entry from my alma mater; Portland State University's entry was a flotilla of bicycles, including students, alumni, the President of the University, and several members of the collegiate bicycle team clad in their green-and-black kit (go Vikings!). We enjoyed the ride home under partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures in the high 50s. The moon peeked out a corner here and there from behind the clouds and we pedaled home on a gorgeous summer night. As we pulled into the driveway, the moon shot out long beams from behind a cloud and lit up the sky with a soft glow. A perfect ride on a beautiful evening. Sweetie commented that her knee only twinged once, on a hill; and when she shifted down it stopped hurting. A good sign for future rides together. RBW Content: Sweetie rode her '94 B'Stone XO-5 with Wald upright bars and a Barley bag; I rode my '99 All-Rounder with Brooks Flyer, Dove handlebar, Nelson bag and Bike Buckets. [RBW] frame swap? (My LongLow custom for your Atlantis)
I have tried to ride and enjoy my '99 LongLow. Each time I come home less happy than before. The truth is that I am totally burned out on 700c wheels, and on the feel of this frame (which, due to multiple factors including the aging process, no longer fits or rides the way it used to). It's a 55cm square, custom-built by Joe Starck.I wonder if there's anyone out there willing to trade an Atlantis frame in a 52 to 54cm (for 26" wheels). My frame has beausage -- paint wear and a few chipsall over -- so I don't care about paint issues. If not, then I'll punt; but I thought I'd toss this out to the list first. [RBW] 1999 LongLow for sale in PDX
I am selling my 1999 LongLow. It no longer fits me comfortably, and after three years of trying to make it work I've given up. I was unable to find someone willing to trade their Atlantis frameset so now I'm simply selling it. Photo here: http://bikelovejones1.blogspot.com/2012/07/bikes-in-and-out.html Details here: 55cm square (seat tube and top tube) frame and fork handbuilt in 1999 by Joe Starck, one of his later frames before he retired. Ritchey Logic headset is 1" threaded and takes 22.2 quill stem.Phil wood hubs (from different eras but they roll fine) laced to Sun CR-18 rims (rear is 40h, front is 36h). Rims show some wear but have many miles left in them.Suntour [friction] Power-ratchet shifters - they're dreamy and work greatShimano triple crankset (don't know what model number, I'll check if you really need to know) with Shimano cartridge bottom bracketVO aluminum fendersTektro long-reach brakesDia-Compe short-reach brake levers (aero)Nitto Noodle bars (42cm) and Technomic stemBrooks B-17 saddle in good used conditionRear rack Bike does Not include the saddlebag or pedals shown in photo. The frame has "beausage"; scuffs and scrapes and touch-ups appear all over the place, as befits a 13-year-old bike that has averaged 1,500 to 2,000 commuting miles a year and was never intended to be a museum piece. There is also a tiny dent in the top tube. Bike would fit someone in the 5'7" to 5'9" range ideally.(If you're unusually short-waisted or short-limbed this bike may not work as well for you.) I am asking $1,500 for the complete bike. I am willing to consider selling the frameset alone if someone prefers to make an offer for that. I would really prefer to sell locally if possible for logistical reasons. Boxing and shipping this as a whole bike will cost extra; if you're willing to pay as much as an estimated $100 additional for UPS shipping I'll consider it, though transporting the boxed bike to a depot will be very difficult for me without a car. Please email off-list if you want to buy this bike. [RBW] Can you outgrow a frame?
I wonder if any of you have had a custom frame that you rode for years and more recently have found that the top tube has become too long for you? I would guess this happens more noticeably to the short-torsoed among us, since as we age our spines compress and those with shorter torsos feel the difference in the reach to the handlebars sooner than everyone else. But I'm beginning to suspect that this may be happening to me with a 12-year-old custom frame that is no longer comfortable with drops on it (even with the shortest Nitto Techie I can find). My suspicion may have been confirmed at the doctor's office this week when I discovered that I was not only no longer 5' 7", I apparently haven't been for some time. For someone who is, in her family of origin, very, very short (my sister and all my cousins topped out at 6' or more), it was a crushing blow, for at least ten minutes. Seriously, has this happened to anyone else? Is it possible to "outgrow" (or outshrink?) a custom frame? --B -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] On diet (was: New News Post)
I had a discussion with a longtime musician friend about the Paleo diet a couple of months ago, over a light lunch at a local restaurant that specializes in Pac NW/Italian fusion cuisine. Micah, grown somewhat pudgy from twenty years on a stool behind an upright bass, had recently begun working with the Blueprint book and had found that it worked well for him; between the diet and a daily walking regimen (2-3 brisk miles every morning before he went to his teaching studio) he'd lost about 15 lbs and said he felt great. He watched me order fresh pasta with cooked vegetables (carrots and zucchini only, and could they please hold the pine nuts, broccoli and tomatoes), basil and olive oil, and a little grated parmesan over it, and call it good. He wondered: where's the tossed salad? What about meat (the restaurant offered some lovely beef dishes)? He was really getting into the Paleo diet and he was in that mindset of the newly converted: "Hey it's working for me and, well, just about everyone else who's tried it, I know it would work for you, too." I patiently explained to Micah the short list of foods that a lifetime of living with Crohn's disease had compelled me to avoid -- and both leafy greens and beef are high on the list. He wondered aloud if trying the Paleo diet could "cure" me of Crohn's disease: "you might go through several weeks or even months of, you know, 'healing crises' as your body acclimates to the new diet, but I bet it could help in the long term." Based on the diet's recommendations of lots of leafy greens and other vegetables that are extremely hard for me to digest, I replied that I wasn't willing to try any diet that would cause me great pain in the process; IMHO, intense abdominal pain after every meal should not be a required part of healing and I'd like to think we've moved beyond the days of bloodletting and un-anesthetized cranium-drilling. I thanked him for his concern and tried to reassure him that I knew my body well enough, after over 40 years with Crohn's, to know what I could eat and what would harm me if I tried. I was glad the new diet was working for him -- he looked and vibed happy -- but it could never work for me because there were simply too many foods prescribed that I couldn't eat. And that is the challenge with diet plans. They do not and cannot work for everybody equally well. Any diet plan claiming to work for everyone is a plan that really has to be examined carefully -- and then discussed frankly with your doctor before you dive on in. No pix of the bike today because I own possibly the most over-photographed Rivvy in the world; but here are some random nature moments I enjoyed on this morning's post-yoga loop of the Columbia Slough, Smith & Bybee Lakes and downtown St. Johns: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/sets/72157625713727495/ I hadn't had a chance to do this loop in quite awhile, almost nine months. So it was nice to finally take The Rivvy (the blue bike, now fitted with drops) and Just Go Outside. Temps in the upper 50's, a light breeze and passing drizzles here and there made for a lovely ride. Another thing: Having yoga class right before this ride seemed to stretch me out just enough to resolve most of the reach issues since converting this bike back to drops. And it's somewhat startling at first to ride such a big-feeling bike (w/700c wheels) after riding a 26"-wheeled All-Rounder as my daily commuter. But by the time I'd gone about five or six miles I seemed to be fine. Perhaps a touch more tweaking is in order but, um, yeah. Wow. Yoga before a ride is a very nice idea. [RBW] Generator lighting questions
Unscientific poll: a. Rear light mounted to fender -- how many of you have mounted one to a (gasp!) plastic fender and how long did it last there before getting beaten up beyond repair? b. Wiring: for those kids not cool enough to have it routed internally, do you like it mounted on top or underside of tubing? c. Front light mounting: How many of you don't normally use a small front rack but specifically installed one to protect the headlight? And how many of you just went with a fork crown mount sans rack? [RBW] contemplating change: 1999 longlow
When I ordered my 1999 Custom LongLow, I knew a few things at the time: --I wanted to be able to run 32mm tires with fenders; --I wanted long-reach side-pull brakes because I was still a young mechanic and fund them easier to adjust out on the road than cantis; --The bike would be a rear-loader. Fast-foward ten years and now I know some new things: --I can adjust cantis just fine and find that they stop just as well as anything; --after several attempts at frontloading I don't like it enough to change my fork rake to accommodate it, so I remain a rear-load rider; --I want to run bigger tires. With fenders. It's the classic dilemma of not knowing then what I know now, and wanting to change it. My 1999 LongLow could be much more bike, and getting a framebuilder to add canti braze-ons and perhaps raise the rear brake bridge a touch would -- SHOULD -- probably cost me less than buying another bike (sorry, Grant). To that end, how much should I expect to pay for these modifications? I have another bike to ride in the meantime so I can handle a couple months' wait but probably not much more than that. Also, while I live in framebuilder-glutted Portland, the builders I know personally are all heavily booked into the next decade. Suggestions for a second-tier builder whose wait-list is shorter would be welcome. [RBW] Brooks B-17 and wacky pedals FS
Brooks B-17 Standard, excellent used condition, some paint missing from the rails but less than 100 miles on it. Black. 60 bucks shipped conus. Shimano Dura-Ace 25th Anniversary pedals. These came to me in a complicated trade (sort of like a three-way deal in exchange for a future draft pick from the Phillies. Yeah, THAT complicated). They're shiniy and look new, possibly uninstalled. No cleats. I'd let these go for $75 shipped conus. PayPal is fine by me, Or I can do a USPS money order or US check. Please email off list. Sorry, no pix, camera is behaving badly. [RBW] rain jackets FS
I have two "vintage" Burley rain jackets, both Ultra-Riders about 15 years old.One is a mens' XL, the other a mens' L. Both yellow with black, front pockets and shoulder/armpit vents. Both have some staining (looks like oil from having been accidentally laid across a bicycle drive train) and both are made of Ultrex -- the breatheable forerunner of the stuff used in the Rock Point and Showers Pass Touring models. Both could probably use an application of Nikwax to re-proof them (all breatheable jackets need re-proofing every few seasons and I'm guessing it's been awhile for these). I'd say they're in good, but not stellar, condition. I'd like to sell these for $30 each including shipping conus. [RBW] poor-aping-swanky bike project: needs a stem
In one of my "Gee it's been a long time since I had a mechanical project at home" moods, I decided to go through the pile of Old Steel at work and see what I could find. Found an odd, cool frame. Mid-80's Schwinn (earliest High Sierra I'm guessing, though there is no model decal). Odd because the seat tube is about right for an ATB-turned- Everybike at almost 19 inches (I have very long legs); but the top tube is a whopping 23.5 inches long c-c. Cool, because it's lugged very simply and elegantly and the paint is a subtle grayish blue in very good shape. With the right stem and swept-back bar combo I can totally make this work. However, it's a Schwinn from the mid-80's and as such it won't take a 22.2 stem. I need one size down (usually found on mid-level touring bikes of the same era, that wacky .883 thing). Ideally something that's short-reach and a little taller than usual. Does anyone have one of these they'd like to part with? Please reply off-list. [RBW] FS: Chicagowig Street Straps
I got a set of these and discovered that they confine my feet too much. Not as much as Power Grips, but more than I care for. Apparently, I am doomed to a life of pedaling on naked, flat pedals, because my knees just go All Over The Place when I pedal. (I don't pedal circles, but ovals...) Here's what they look like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chicagowig/sets/72157622336862973/ They do give more room to wiggle than power grips and don't jam your toes. They can also be used with just about any shoe. Designed for use with bmx or other totally flat pedals. I paid 45.00 for mine new, used them for three weeks, and decided they weren't for me. I'd like to sell for 35.00 including shipping in conus. I will toss in for free a set of MKS pedal flips (bolt-on alloy quills), which help get into the pedals a LOT with these things. Paypal is ok. [RBW] FS and need some help
In order to celebrate my Rivvy's 10th birthday I'm sprucing her up a little this summer. Shellacked cork grips, new saddle (replacing a 15-year-old Brooks that finally bit it) and aluminum fenders. 1. The brakeset that I bought for this frameset back in 1998 has to be replaced. I have found a Dia-Compe longer-reach D/P sidepull (nutted) for the front in silver; now I need one to match in the rear. Does anyone have one of these who can help me out for cash or trade? 2. Speaking of the original brakeset, it's a Shimano RX-100 long-reach (57 reach). At the time (1998) this was all that was available in long-reach and because I worried that I might need replacements someday I bought two complete sets of brake calipers from RBW when I ordered my frame. The first set is still going strong and will go on another bike. The second set is still in the bag, unopened, and I would be happy to sell it to anyone in need of a really nice brakeset (that's no longer made). I paid 75.00 in 1998 for the set. I'd welcome offers (though I would probably want more than JUST the Dia-Compe rear brake that I'm looking for as that part is definitely a downgrade from the RX-100's. Please email me off-list and lemme know. [RBW] OT: help! bike/motel suggestions Monterrey, CA
Hi all: My sweetie may be attending a Jewish food sustainability conference in Monterrey, California in late December. The conference is being held in a fancy-schmancy retreat center where sharing a quad accommodation will run over 300 bucks (in addition to the over-300-dollar attendance fee). To save money, we are investigating the possibility of her staying in more affordable digs nearby and renting a bicycle to go back and forth to the conference. It's likely that she will drive down for the conference (because that's actually cheaper than flying). If she can find ways to cut costs up front it will be easier for her to apply for scholarships for remaining costs. I would welcome suggestions for cheaper motels and a local shop where she can rent a basic city bike. Please reply OFFLIST, and thanks. [RBW] bike parts for sale
I'd prefer to sell these to appreciative folks here so I don't have to resort to Ebay or Craigslist. All can be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/sets/72157614357648800/ The photos (with descriptions) that you want will be at the bottom of the set called "bike tech" and should be self-evident. All prices will include shipping in conusa and all proceeds are being used to finance my first-time foray into cyclocross this fall (I've almost paid for my team kit and two races; gotta come up with fees for at least two more races, plus gas and food). 1. Freewheel bonanza: a. A set of THREE Suntour 6-speed freewheels. Good used condition, cleaned and oiled. All three for $ 40.00 shipped. b. A set of THREE Regina (made in Italy) 5-speed freewheels. Good used condition, cleaned and oiled. As far as I can tell none of these are French thread. (They all seem to fit my regular hub.) All three for $ 30.00 shipped. c. Shimano 600 6-speed freewheel. Good used condition, cleaned and oiled. $ 35.00 shipped. d. Sachs 5-speed freewheel, *Excellent* condition! I didn't have to clean this one at all, but since I can't verify its history I can't accurately call it new. But it's yummy, and also non-French. $ 40.00 shipped. 2. Brooks B-68"S" (that's S for "short", presumably for The Ladies but I know at least two guys who like the shorter saddles too). This one has been given the "Imperial" treatment because someone at Brooks decided that it might be a good idea to bring back the cutout designs of a century ago. Or something like that. Anyway -- 200 miles of test-riding spread over about a month this summer confirm that I am NOT a candidate for cutout saddles. (sigh) $70.00 shipped. Look at the pretty pictures and contact me offlist if interested. I'm open to combined shipping too so if you want, well, I dunno, everything or close to it -- make a reasonable offer for the lot. Bright neon green, slightly used, with some dirt showing on shoulders. Asking 50.00 shipped conus. 3. Showers Pass Touring jacket, fits Mens' medium (would also fit womens' large). The reliability of the LED lamp is appealing, and they are apparently much brighter than the halogen bulbs. Another option, if you're handy with a soldering iron, is to build your own LED light. [RBW] odd request: sweater
I wouldn't normally bring this to the RIV list but I feel I've exhausted my options. I once had a Bontrager wool-blend cardigan sweater, one of those teal-blue ones with the olive and white trim down the sleeves, ages ago. I liked this sweater a LOT because it had my initial on the front and fit me really well. I loaned it to my niece and she wore it for a few months. Then, about two years ago, I asked for it back and she kept putting me off until, many months later, she finally admitted to me that she wore it to a restaurant in Seattle -- and accidentally left it there. She didn't realize it until she was halfway back to Portland. Call that sweater gone. ..::sigh::.. Anyway, I've been looking for a replacement all over the internet and elsewhere and have come up empty-handed. So finally, I'm asking around. If you know of where I might possibly find this sweater in a mens' large, please please let me know and I will follow up, going as far as to make the current owner an offer. [RBW] fatter tires for 26" wheels
After reading Jan's article about fatter tires in the latest BQ, I decided to try it on my All-Rounder. I'd gotten this frameset about three years ago and built it up with drop bars. (Although the height of the frame was a little short for my legs, the top tube was the right length for drops.) I've ridden it on numerous city and country rides and have done a couple of bike-camping overnights on it (longest rides on this have been several metric centuries). I have wrestled with the feel of this bike since building it up with 26 x 1.25 Paselas. Although the tires help up well, the feel of the 1.25 width seemed sort of harsh, and worse, squirrelly. In the absence of a pair of T-Serv tires just sitting around, I installed some 1.5 Paselas, and ran some errands while at work. I noticed the difference in handling pretty much right away. The bike rolled easily but cornered more gently and without as much of the squirrelly feeling I'd had with the skinnier tires. Just for fun, I also raised the handlebar about 1/2". Now the bike looks sort of odd because the handlebars are so close to the saddle; but I have a really short torso and had let go of the "classic" look of a road bike long ago anyway. What I have now is a more comfortable bike with a mellower ride quality. Do I feel slower? Well, I felt slower already but that's totally on me. The ride is smoother and more stable and that matters more to me than speed these days. I think this is a good experiment to do on bikes with 26" wheels. I'd like to hear from others who are running wider tires on 26" bikes they ride mostly on pavement. [RBW] Portland-Vancouver Rivvies: Sunday Parkways this weekend 5/16/10
To all Portland/Vancouver-area Rivvylovers: the first Sunday Parkways party is this weekend, 5/16/10 in NE Portland. Enjoy a leisurely ride, skate or stroll along a CAR-FREE loop of neighborhood streets as you tour Inner Northeast Portland, up along the Alameda Ridge, through Concordia and looping back all the way to Woodlawn. Enjoy live music, dancing, games and food vendors at several neighborhood parks along the route. Roads on the route close to motorized traffic at 10 am and stay that way till 3pm. I'll be there -- though sadly, I don't get to ride the Rivvy; look for me on a dull green Surly BD doing roving wrench support. Weather is due to be partly cloudy, chance of a sprinkle, highs in themid-60s. In short, Perfect Portland cycling weather. [RBW] Portland Riv Ride updated details
Hi campers! This is a reminder that Sunday, June 6, there will be an informal Riv lovers' Ride in Portland (OR).We will use a route similar to the old Slug Velo Rose Ride route (because it's Rose Festival time and the roses are in bloom all over the city!). We'll meet at noon at Peninsula Park Rose Gardens, corner of N Albina and Ainsworth (we'll meet at the top of the stairs on Ainsworth between Albina and Commercial sts, south end of the rose garden). Please come gawk, admire, take photos of and RIDE your Riv'd out bikes (Rivendell, B'Stone, and other classic steel bikes in a similar vein, shellac optional). I had considered asking folks to bring a sack lunch but it's not clear where'd we'd picnic. This is a ONE-WAY route ending at the Lucky Lab Brewpub (SE 9th and Hawthorne). Please bring money for a bite to eat at the end of the ride. Please also wear clothes, as this is in no affiliated with the folks who bring you the World Naked Ride. Ride will take place rain or shine (it's Portland), so make like the Girl and Boy Scouts and Be Prepared. I am writing this the day before I perform at Folklife Festival, so if I changed some details from the last time I mentioned this ride, I apologize. I'm posting this from memory. [RBW] The Rivvy turns ten in 2009
I celebrated New year's Day by skipping the official "First Ride" and instead I rode a few miles in a screaming downpour to meet a friend over coffee. I rode my Rivendell LongLow, a custom frameset that was built for me in 1999. Through two wheel rebuilds (soon to be a third rear rear, as the rims tend to crap out sooner in rainy climates), two used rear derailleurs and soon-to-be three front ones, two and a half sets of fenders and a couple of different handlebar configurations, and even a little fork re-straightening (!) this has been one helluva nice ride. When I ordered the bike in 1998, I explained to Grant that I wanted a frameset that would see me out (and yes, those were my words), because I doubted I'd ever have the opportunity to order another custom frame in the future. He worked with the frame builder and a year later, I took delivery of a frameset that was, in Grant's words, "of cockroach durability". After a cup of coffee that lasted three hours, I put on my not-quite-dry rainwear, saddled up and rode the three soggy miles home, still feeling a little beat-up by the previous night's festivities but happy that my bike responded so readily under my legs (and hey, at least the ride home was with a tailwind!). Riding a really good, strong bike that fits so well is like putting on your favorite pair of jeans, the ones you like so much it doesn't feel like there's ever an inappropriate day to wear them. Shimano "Dura-Ace" freewheel. 7-speed: 13-14-15-17-19-21-26. (Sorry, I can't explain the bigger jump between the last two cogs... [RBW] odd wheels - help to identify?
A pair of wheels has come to me and I cannot identify them. Hubs are made by a company called "Roval". They appear to have sealed bearings (though I can't be sure because I haven't opened them yet). Direct-pull, flat-bladed spokes. Front wheel is radially-laced with 18 spokes and rear is 1x-laced with 32. Rims are sew-up, an odd cross between box and deep-v. Freewheel hub; rear wheel looks offset just enough for 5 cogs. No maker ID on rim. They're weird and funky in an esoteric old-school sorta way. Does anyone know anything about these? [RBW] Sackville bags: how necessary, and for what uses?
I just got a look at the new Sackville bags over at the RBW Web site. Wow, they're humungous. The "Large" is the largest large I've seen in a regular-shaped saddlebag (I think it's bigger than the Carradice Camper by a little bit). Anyone out in Riv-land planning on buying one of these new bags? I don't plan to; I only have two "regular" bikes and they're both suitably saddlebagged at present. (Also, I don't yet know how I feel, exactly, about a saddlebag that comes with its own engraved serial number plate.) But I'm quite curious to hear if anyone is planning to purchase one and what uses are planned for it. (The idea that a saddlebag is spec'd to fit a 14" laptop certainly makes the case for ditching your briefcase pannier...) [RBW] FS: Mark's Rack
I am selling my Mark's Rack. It is shown mounted here: http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2007/cc408-bethhamon1107.html (scroll down to the last photo in the display for best view) I bought it thinking Id really like the whole boxy bag thing up front, but in the year and a half that I've had it I've used it mostly as a rear saddlebag support. Now I've mounted a full-size rear rack so I can carry groceries and stuff on my A-R, and I'd like to find another home for the Mark's Rack. It has seen some use and shows light scratching here and there. Also, I've added two small stripes of silver reflective tape to the longer arms for safety. I paid $88 for mine. They now cost $97. I'd love to get 60 or best offer for mine including shipping in lower 48. OR -- I'd trade straight across for a Wooly Warm sweater-jersey (the old style, with the three-button placket and long sleeve greyish-green pullover model) in good condition in a size LARGE. Nitto/RBW mini-rack, front, works with canti brakes (center tang is threaded and fits through fork crown hole): NIB, 80.00 shipped. 2. V/O front mini-rack, similar size and shape to # 1 but the center tang is flat and must be drilled to suit your bike. NOTE: This drilling should be done at a machine shop where they have a drill press. You CANNOT do this easily at home with a hand drill, so don't even try.) NIB, 80.00 shipped. 3. Old, used TINY boxy bag sorta thing. Canvas with vinyl trim, measures 10 long, 6 inches high and 4 inches deep. Includes clear vinyl map sleeve; rear-facing pockets and foward-facing main pouch close with oe-handed snaps. Old, stained, Oddball size, good for very small bike or as a novelty. Still holds its shape relatively well. 20 bucks alone, shipped; or 10 with one of the racks. (No pix yet, I'm working on it.) I have more bikes than bags and this one never really saw enough use from me. It HAS, however, been loaned out to a friend for a short camping trip, so there are wear spots on the leather patch and what appears to be a small spill of white flour inside the main compartment. [RBW] A quandry (or, If I'd known then what I know now)
Ten years ago I took delivery on a custom LongLow, paid for with proceeds from an accident settlement. Most of you know the long version of the story so I needn't go into it here. I LOVE this bike. I ride it more often than any of my other bikes (I have four, at present). It has towed trailers, carried bike buckets filled to overflow with groceries, wet laundry or books; it has been on bike-camping trips and has traveled with me to graduate school and back again. It fits me like a dream and I love it. You may be asking, "where's the 'but' in this story?" ...BUT I wish I'd had it made around fatter tires. (Side note: I do NOT want to run 650B wheels to get a fatter tire on this bike. 650B, while providing a nice ride, poses logistical issues for me that I don't have the money or storage space to solve, and I'd rather just not go there.) The bike is currently able to handle 700 x 32 tires with a fender... barely. I am thinking of converting this bike to a center-pull brake, which hopefully would give me just enough room to accommodate a 700 x 35 tires AND a nicer fender. (I'm looking at a set of V-O aluminum fenders.) Has anyone else tried this approach? How has it worked? Have you noticed a serious braking deficit when switching from dual-pivot to center-pull? Comments, please. [RBW] summer dressing
I am beginning to re-do my beloved Rivvy, which looks pretty tired after ten years of service.Added shellacked tan cork grips this morning. Honey-colored Brooks B-17 will follow next payday, replacing a 14-year-old B-17 that no longer offers much support. Pondering new fenders, but I'm also worried about tire clearance (I got one of those Maynard Hershon "if I'd known then what I know now" kind of bikes and can barely run 700 x 32 tires with the fenders I have now). Current fender is a cheap Planet Bike set in black. I'm looking at the V-O fenders (they're cheaper than Honjos and I sort of like the matte finish) OR Planet Bike Cascadia. The Cascadias are a known quantity; I know that they'll just fit with my 32 tires. But the idea of alloy fenders is appealing. Last batch of VO fenders I saw were not pre-drilled. How much of a hassle IS it to drill your own fenders? Seriously. Is it an all-day-at-home affair? Also, Current brake set is the Shimano RX-100 "long reach" that were recommended when the frame was built without cantis back in 1999. Is there another dual-pivot caliper that offers even a little more tire/fender clearance? What do you like? [RBW] Summer dressing part two
Okay. I've selected the VO fenders. Measuring them against my existing brakes it will be an EXTREMELY tight fit. I may be compelled to switch over to center-pull brakes, not my favorite in terms of on-the-fly adjustment. So far all I've been able to snag around here are a pair of the long-reach Dia-Compe 750's, which I guess will work (though the pads will sit high and there will be a LOT of metal underneath). I don't have the budget to add braze-ons to my ten-year-old frame (for center-pulls OR cantis). Has anyone used these without brazing to the frame? Are they any better than the center-pulls of my youth? Is there another option which would work better in a similar price range? (Finding these used has gotten much harder since folks began doing 650b conversions with them...)
