if you really want to roast beans, go to Sweet Maria's and buy a roaster.
Also note, it's something you will need to do outside to maintain domestic

Funny, during the first batch I did on the stove top it became obvious to
me that I would need to move this operation outdoors to keep harmony.
However, my spouse seems to like the roasting odors as much as I do and the
smoke is sucked up the range hood so I don't feel too bad that I still have
not searched for that electric burner in the basement.

2014-03-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
I understand the sentiment, Ron. I am frankly as surprised as you, if not
more so. In defense of hairless cats, er, decaffeinated coffee, here is my
explanation. Adrenaline rushes are bad for my brain. They release
adrenaline and cortisol and other short term gain/long term debt things.
Caffeine stimulates the release of Adrenaline and friends.

What is fascinating to me is that with the Swiss Water Method of
decaffeination, the flavor of the bean remains mostly intact. In addition
there are things that my brain experiences, as with dark, unsweetened
chocolate, and far more so with endurance aerobic running and biking, that
help it without the long term need for recovery. However, I only get this
effect with freshly ground beans brewed well. So, it is possible to be a
decaf coffee snob. Grin.

2014-03-06 Thread Ron Mc
the sentiment is mostly humor, Deac. If I were purchasing decaf, it would
be French Roast and brewed in a press. I smoke my cigars, and was also
posting on the cigar board this morning. I smoked cigarettes for 17 years
- that was Many years ago. I quit then by - ok, prayer - and chewing
coffee beans, which answered the 3 instant gratifications, oral fixation,
toasty flavor, and stimulant. From the cigar board I also know many fine
coffee roasters, who have refined their tastes over the years. Every few
years I meet for a coast kayak/fishing trip with a buddy who has honed his
coffee blend to finest I've ever tasted and can't get it too strong. I
make the breakfast tacos.

I have been using a skillet on the stove top to make a larger batch than
the air popper. With the pan I have, I can do around a cup of beans at a
time, about 2.5 times more than the air popper. It takes longer, is a
little more smokey, but a very satisfying activity with excellent results.
I cannot see buying an expensive roaster. I would try the Whirley Pop, but
don't like to cook using aluminum.

2014-03-06 Thread David Banzer
I messed around with the popcorn popper way, until I set it on fire trying
to roast too many continuous batches. My current method is an old wok and
large wooden spoon constantly keeping the beans moving. With a little
practice, you can get pretty good roasts. You might have a suitable old pan
already, no extra equipment needed.
Even the worst batches made a better cup than a lot of coffee shops in my
area.
And it's a fun process to watch and experiment with! And for decaf you're
more than likely going to get more dialed in roasts that suite your needs
than other roasted coffees.

Just in the last 6 months I've gotten into the single origin coffee roasted in
my neighborhood at the ME Swings Roastery. They introduced me to the pour over
brewing method to.

Oddly enough this is all a result of the government furloughs this summer as it
was during the 6 consecutive Fridays 'off' that I was able you attend the
Swings coffee free 'cupping' demo's where we would go through a smell/taste
process kind of like wine tasting with several single origin coffees... It was
pretty cool.

My coffee if choice right now is an Ethiopia Amaro Gayo, lots of sweet
blueberry notes and an overall light, bright coffee. But I usually change it up
every other pound or so. Its a big change for me as I had always preferred
strong bold blends until recently, particularly Sumatran coffee but these days
the lighter stuff is working for me.

asked him why did we always go to Peet's? We both were perfectly capable

Doug said: Sometimes, it's just about *The Going*

You can drink Peet's at home, but you can only go to Peet's by going to

about wanting or needing coffee. Sometimes, it's just about *The Making. *

Don't understand the blue bottle craze. Their coffee beans are ok, the main
problem is they are so populer that everytime I go to buy some beans at the

Like for an overnight, I pack a proper ceramic mug, my ceramic beehouse,
pre-weigh out 16g of beans and bring the grinder.

There's something fundamentally relaxing and grounding about the *act* of

Don't understand the blue bottle craze. Their coffee beans are ok, the
main problem is they are so populer that everytime I go to buy some beans
at the Ferry building in SF (or at any number of local farmers markets) the
line is crazy long.

When I am in SF I stay in Hayes Valley. BB has an open store front they
built in what used to be an alley but now has been decked out with places
to sit and all. I try to get by in the a.m. around 8 after the SV people
have bused out. Brought their Three Africans beans back to Chicago with
me. Maybe we just don't have the options here, but I can say it was quite
a hit.

system where i used two poppers and did 3 batches each in a row for a full
weeks supply of coffee, but the popcorn popper got so hot after the first
batch that it burned the second, and I didn't have the patience to let it
cool down ;). A lot of people roast their own this way and all the power
too them, I wasn't dedicated enough.

I lived in Nashville for a while and loved all the local coffee beans
there: bongo java and portland brew especially. Now I live in Oakland and
get my beans from Highwire. They're the best I've had in the bay area,
though I admittedly haven't tried much besides them, Philz and Blue bottle.

For camping I'm all about the Startbucks via instant coffee.

Counter culture has a great natural dried bean right now. Really loving
naturals.
I like a lighter bean that expresses the natural sweetness. Can't stand too
much dark roasting. Masks the flavor, for me at least. My partner is the
opposite - she loves a dark roast like any of the La Colombe offerings.

JFG.

Sorry, it's not fancy. But I drink it by the pot. About two pots a day.

Stumptown Ethiopian coffees are my favorite, I love the floral notes from
air drying. I have worked as a barista with a lot of coffees and have to
say Gorilla coffee out of Brooklyn makes great small batch roasts that are
amazing.

Peet's Major Dickason's on the office dime, whatever's cheap and cheerful
at my place, usually Trader Joe's.

Highly inconsistent, likely dull electric grinders and aged French presses
at both spots.

I know there are better coffees in the world, and even down the road, but I
measure in litres per day, so those first three cups don't even hit the
sides on the way down.
