[RBW] Re: Is Joe the evolved Sam?
I was of the same mind as Edwin. When Joe showed up, I thought of buying one and tranferring the parts from Sam and buying some fatter tires for one wheelset. I thought Joe might be better on trails but feared I'd miss the road feel of Sam. I've noticed that 45 Smart Sams fit the Sam but rub on the kickstand when I pedal hard. I did see that the bb drop on Joe was slightly lower but I'm sure that would be easily offset by a set of 55 tires. A Joe for dirt and heavy lifting and Sam for roading in the garage\shop together is not an option. Too many projects coming up and it's rainy season (we hope). Besides that combo might be better satisfied by Sam and a Hunq. John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Is Joe the evolved Sam?
This is basically my thinking on it too. To me, a new owner of a Sam that I like very much, despite its limitations (e.g. brake choice and clearance), I don't feel the Joe would bring enough of an upgrade to justify either a substitution or addition. A longer wheelbase sounds like it could be clunky on tight singletrack corners, which is where my Sam is most limited, and the clearance increase wouldn't really justify a *different* bike. That said, I hope this new model is successful enough to warrant further explorations. As long as I'm saving my pennies for another Riv, I'll continue hoping they update the Hunq with clearance for 2.5s! [RBW] Re: Is Joe the evolved Sam?
Long chainstays allow the use of road cranksets without needing wider bottom brackets. I'm not sure if any Riv models would need wider than normal bottom brackets, but on my large Clem, with the longest chainstays of the sizes, I'm able to use a Dura Ace 7410 crank that utilizes a 103mm bottom bracket, with a 42t chainring on the inner position with plenty of room between the chainring and the chainstay. I'm not sure if that makes a stronger case for the longer chainstays on the Appa, but it certainly was a nice surprise on my Clem. " Personally, I'm a little shaky with Appa's 52-53 length chainstays. " I'm not sure I follow what this means. Does this mean: a. I've ridden a bike with 53cm chainstays, and the ride was unstable. When I ride a bike with 53cm chainstays, I'm a little shaky b. I don't believe there is any benefit to longer chainstays. In my opinion, if it aint broke dont fix it, and 45cm stays aint broke. By "shaky", I mean "I don't see any benefit". c. something else Either one is fine, of course. When I get my 55 Appaloosa I will absolutely be comparing it to my 58cm (700C) Atlantis. My 56cm singleTT canti-Hillborne is set up as a stripped down road bike, so I wouldn't consider that really a fair comparison. [RBW] Re: Is Joe the evolved Sam?
i purchased a new hunq frame a couple of years ago. it was a lot of money and still is a lot of money for me. my wife still thinks that the whole bike was 2k, not just the frame. since then, i bought a used sam from a too generous group member. the hunq is racked and bagged and adorned with nice parts. it sleeps in the house and is ready for anything. the sam is more minimal and gets me around town 80% of the time. it has a few dings and is dirty and sleeps in the garage. i know im never going to be into super fast road riding or crazy mountain biking, so these two bikes are likely the last two bikes ill ever buy. it stings a bit that the joe appaloosa didnt come out two years ago, because i imagine that it splits the difference between my two bikes for less than the price of one. i wish there was a reason/room for one, but my bases are covered. i hope its not such a good idea at such an ok price that it decommissions the atlantis/hunq/sam. if it was around back then, it would be the only choice for me, far and away. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Is Joe the evolved Sam?
Bill, I am one who would want just a frameset. If it were offered like a Clem, for a $700 presale (wow wasn't that a great deal!) I would have jumped on it, transferred everything over from my Sam and sold the Sam frameset. But it was not to be. Reading your email ALMOST made me want to order it, but thank goodness the window is closed. I have a Sam, like it a lot, and don't REALLY need a new bike, no matter how cool that Joe looks. I expect the Joe will ride a lot like a Sam. It will have all the benefits of wider tires. I expect it to ride "Like a Rivendell". Regarding the numerous people who want a frameset. I understand, completely. I have all the parts to pull together two or three builds, also. But think about it. If there was ever going to be a hypothetical Joe Appaloosa frameset, we'd expect the price to be higher than that of the Hillborne ($1300). On top of that add the new crown, the longer stays. Then, many of you would want the super cool Choco-Bosco handlebar. Every previous Nitto Bullmoose Variant has been $150-$160. You quickly get to a frameset + handlebar that may cost nearly $1900, and here you have the chance to buy the whole bike for $2100. It's kind of difficult to pass up. The Riv crankset is not cheap, take a guess and price it at $180. Those Sun Race shifters are $65 for a pair. The Silver hubset is $110. I'm sure as the audience for Rivs and the number of dealers grow, it may make sense to offer many of the "more affordable" options as complete instead of f/f/hs/bb. Working w/ the dealers, I'm sure it's much easier to move the Rivs once people can actually ride them. I screwed up. I said the Silver Hubset was $110. The rear hub is $110. The front is $75. $185 for the hubset. At any rate, I think that even the Appaloosa complete at $2500 is a solid deal. Well the Appaloosa frame is never going to be $700. It's fully lugged. The Clem frame was $700 largely because of how lugless it is. Three sizes vs Five also helped. IF they ever offer an Appaloosa frame, it will definitely cost more than a Hillborne.
