[TANKS] Re: SCC -> PAGin™

2023-10-12 Thread Caleb Smith
Thanks guys.
I have just under 5 acres here of mostly wooded ground. It is sloped so it
could present some interesting battle scenarios too. No open fields for
John to sit and snipe in unfortunately though.
A spring battle sounds great. Need time to get things operational anyway.
My locust has received some upgrades but still doesn't possess a working
turret.

[TANKS] SCC -> PAGin™

2023-10-11 Thread Caleb Smith
It's been a rough couple years for the SCC. Suffering humiliating personnel
shortages after the debacle known as the Zombie War and lack of defense
contracts during Trump's era of world peace left the SCC tired,
short-staffed, and broke. Falling back on their trusted chicken business
till things improved, the Smith Clan was able to hang on and eventually
rebrand their company into the now formidable PAGin™. (Pennsylvania
Agricultural Guard inc.) Using grants supposed to fund the fight against
the spotted lantern fly, PAGin™ has been able to build a new compound in
the hills of Pennsylvania while expanding its tank divisions with excellent
armor acquired from the Afghanistan black market. Business is booming.
During all this, PAGin™ has not forgotten the atrocities committed against
them at the hands of Tri-Pact and their cohorts. Retaliation has been the
ever present motivation.
There are reports of PAGin™ possibly building a dirty bomb disguised as a
shipment of bug spray, intended for delivery to Tri-Pact headquarters
during their annual budget banquet. The accuracy of these reports is hard
to verify as the only information available is from migrant illegal
immigrants doing short term ag work for the clan on their way to NYC.
Will Tri-Pact act on these reports? Will there be conflict between these
warring factions yet again? Only time will tell but in the meantime PAGin™
will be sharpening their swords, ready for the day.

What's up everyone? It's been a while and it's been so quiet here. Anyone
out there still wanting to battle RC Tanks?
These last two years have been busy ones for me but I'm happy to say I came
out on the other side with a beautiful wife and a lovely piece of property
in the hills of PA. I've got enough room here that we could have battles
here if people want to. I'd love to host. If anyone is out there and wants
to battle let me know and we'll see about keeping this hobby alive!

Re: [TANKS] Re: T093 Rebuild

2020-05-01 Thread Caleb Smith
The track would twist under the first roadwheel and get pushed off. Could be an
issue with tension like you said. Wired the batteries in series for 24v and
speed is so much better. I tightened the tracks a bit more and it seems the
combination of speed + tension is keeping the tracks on better. Will test
further in the morning.

Yeah! Loads of torque. Traction is good too. Had no trouble climbing some very
steep, dirt grades. I'm pretty happy. Only real issue is zero turns in thick
grass throws tracks more often than not. That is probably just the nature of
the track design more than anything.

Thanks guys!

Interesting idea, Doug. Depending on the shape of your part it might work. The
one concern that comes to mind is the micro-ridges from the layers. I wonder if
they might keep the part from coming out, and since the mold will be solid it
won't bend out to release the part. Maybe a two piece mold? Idk. If you try it
out be sure to share the results!

[TANKS] Re: Exploration into use of FDM 3D printing to facilitate ease of entry into the hobby of 1/6th scale RC tank combat.

2020-04-22 Thread Caleb Smith
Yeah, I built a Locust with a lot of 3d printed parts. Currently working on
replacing all those parts with cast plastic or wood. They just don't hold up to
the beating these tanks get. I wouldn't count on a 3d printed tank body lasting
long unless you babied it, and that's no fun.
On the other hand, 3d printers are great for making masters to cast parts out
of plastic. Or for making low stress mounts in the hull or turret. I doubt you
could make a 3d printer hull that's stronger and cheaper than plain plywood.
Those are my thoughts anyways. 3d printing definitely has a lot of uses in this
hobby, but structural parts isn't one of them, imo.

I thought I might have read somewhere on here that the gearhead could be
switched to the other side to make it an opposite but I can't find any info

[TANKS] A bit quiet recently...!

2019-04-01 Thread Caleb Smith
The "Smith" Clan is still alive and well despite all efforts to shut us down by
Tri-Pact and their compadres. Unfortunately with peace prevailing as of late
the government has been very lax in defence spending leaving the vaunted Locust
in disrepair. We've managed to keep the feared 25-pounder in front line
condition just in case Tri-Pact decided to break out into the North. We hope
they will not be that foolish.
As before mentioned deceased government spending has also led to the layoff of
our incredible employees, halting all construction on further assets. We've
managed to hang onto several engineers though who work daily in their
underground lab to design the next great fighting machine for the futherment of
the "Smith" Clan's mission. If war becomes evident, we will be forced to bring
these machines to fruition which will spell doom for Tri-Pact who can neither
withstand the quality and quantity of the entire "Smith" Clan fury.

Yours faithfully,
Agent "Smith"

2018-01-12 Thread Caleb Smith
Joe,

You are right, it very well may. The issue I have though is one of the motors
is mounted inverted in my tank. Therefore if I have one motor spinning CW the
other (flipped 180 degrees) will be spinning CCW. So if the motor are advanced
timed I'll always be running one 'backwards' unless I'm turning.
So am I correct in assuming that the motor connections, in this case, don't
really matter?

[TANKS] Re: Brushless scooter controller rc interface

2018-01-11 Thread Caleb Smith
Joe,
I haven't designated any of the wire connections yet on my build. In reality,
color coding shouldn't matter as motor direction can be switched by swapping
any two of the motor leads. If the interface can control the speed and
direction on the controller, setting the 'forward' rotation of the motor will
be as easy as swapping two wires, if even that.

I don't use the sensor wires.

[TANKS] Brushless scooter controller rc interface

2018-01-05 Thread Caleb Smith
Hi everyone, I'm putting this out here to see if the community can help me
figure out how to control this scooter controller as easily as possible.
So I have two of these controllers I'd like to put into my Locust
https://www.allelectronics.com/item/msc-250/250-watt-controller-for-brushless-motors/1.html
They use a switch to control direction and a 10k pot to regulate speed. I'm not
sure how to go about making these RC controllable like a standard etc. Two
forms of control will be needed, one to move the pot to control speed and one
to control the switch for direction. How to go about doing that in an effective
manner that will allow full control has me a bit stumped. I know Frank
developed a fancy control board for the brushed unidirectional controllers, but
I don't know if it would work for these or if they're even available anymore.
If you all could give some ideas I'd appreciate it. Hopefully I'll be able to
get the Locust running again soon.
Thanks,
Caleb

I'm afraid the lack of battles is my fault. The Smith clan gave the Pitteli
bag'o ruffians such a thrashing in that last event that they've been hiding in
their basements ever since, refusing to fight. Sorry guys.

On a side note, the Smith clan hasn't expanded its arsenal since last event.
(with the lack of opposition why should we) The Locust still needs some
driveline help. I tried switching to different motors for more torque but
they're way too fast and need a lot of gearing down to be practical. Since then
I've found that the reason the original motors were stalling often is they
don't like the HobbyKing brushless controllers I was using. I tested them using
a brushless scooter controller and the motors have loads more torque and don't
stall. I just need to configure some kind of control interface since they're
not RC controllers. Maybe I'll start another thread on that. So I'll be working
on putting the old motors back in.
The 25 pounder is still ready to defend the homeland. The Pak36 will probably
be converted into some kind of turreted German naval gun as the Pak36 was too
hard to fit and hide a lot of the stuff.
Anyway, that's a little bit of what's going on. Looking back, I'm OK with not
having any battles this year. The tank was in disrepair and time was limited.
This year should be better plus I'll have a bigger budget to put towards gear.
Hopefully we'll all see each other come spring and make more memories.
Don't stay up too late. ;)

Re: [TANKS] Suspension Guidance

2017-09-28 Thread Caleb Smith
Hi Pat,
No suspension is definitely the easiest and fastest way to get a tank
going. And while it might not be the most scale or smoothest ride, it sure
beats not having a moving tank at all! I tried to incorporate a simple
suspension on my Locust during construction but later went to hard axles
when I kept having issues.
If you end up using wood for the TTS track I'd recommend you not use wood
for the tracking tabs. Wooded tabs (in my experience) break too easily and
can be a pain to replace. Instead, use 1/2" by 1/2" aluminum angle cut into
half inch pieces and secure them on the wooden track with a screw and a
little E6000 glue. If something goes wrong with the track and some tabs get
bent, use some pliers to straighten them. If they break, take out the screw
and replaced it. Much easier to fix than a wooden tab broke off half way
with a brad sticking out of it, especially when you're in a hurry.
Hope to see you at a battle someday soon.

Re: [TANKS] Pin Drop...

2017-06-20 Thread Caleb Smith
Heh, hear you on the the suspension. Same way with my Locust. I wanted to
do suspension, but when I got down to actually implementing it I said
"forget it!" and went with solid axles. I didn't really want to do it, but
I got on the battlefield much faster. And my tank can still tear it up with
the best of them even though it doesn't have suspension. ;)

[TANKS] Re: Hello

2017-02-22 Thread Caleb Smith
Welcome Pat!
Looks like you're in a wonderful spot to get started in this hobby. Joe
will be able to show you a lot of the "do's and don'ts" when it comes to
building tanks. I'm about an hour and a half due east of you near the town
of Sunbury.
I can understand how hard it looks to build the suspension units for a
tank. It's one of the hardest parts to build...if you build it. Most of the
tanks at the battle just have solid axles for that reason. About three or
four tanks have working suspension units (mine not included).
Anyway, looking forward to seeing the beginnings of your tank.

Re: [TANKS] An Era is OVER!

2017-02-18 Thread Caleb Smith
This is just a scare tactic by Tri-Pact. Their just trying to reassure their
nervous stockholders. Well it's not going to work. Tri-Pact has attempted to
spin every story in their favor, make themselves out to be the hero, and paint
all opposition as the enemy. It's time the record be set straight.
For one, the two Canadian "refugees" were invited guests to our fair
Commonwealth set to tour our prize winning tannenbaum farms. While we were
inspecting a farm in Gettysburg, we were ambushed by a rogue force of Tri-Pact
agents. With the help of our Canadian allies we were able to dispatch the
rogues. Almost instantly Tri-Pact issued a statement saying PUFF forces had
massacred their charity shipment of schoolbooks destined for the poor children
of New York. Public sympathy was swayed, and PUFF was garnered the villain.
While this is disheartening, it will eventually work to Tri-Pact's demise.
Their constant denial of the facts will eventually cause their outdated
organization to crumble. How long that will take is unknown, but it can only be
quickened by PUFF's efforts to keep the world safe.

Good evening gentlemen,
Mr. Smith.

Very nice work on that tractor. It's going to look sweet when it's done.
As far as what I've done, I haven't been doing much these last few months. I
did completely strip out my Locust and paint the interior. Next on my list is
to upgrade the motors, then fix my tracks, after that remodel the turret and
then it should be ready for the first battle of the year.
Also we've been slowly planning how we want to build the halftrack.

BTW, did you test the .68cal paintball hits on 3D printed parts? I have a
> 3D printer using ABS filament, and I don’t think it could take a
> point-blank hit.
>

What are you printing, Loic? My Locust survived a two-day event using 3D
printed idlers and TTS sprockets. Both the idlers and sprockets took hits
with no visible damage. My mantlet was also 3D printed and took a LOT of
hits over the weekend. It had a layer of fiberglass reinforcement on it,
but it didn't show any damage either.
I believe that 3D printing has a lot of uses in RCTC, but there are some
things that it just isn't isn't suitable for. For example, I tried 3D
printing suspension units for my Locust. (there are some pics in a past
thread) Initial results looked promising, but long term durability just
wasn't there. The constant stress of a 50lb. tank on the printed parts
eventually broke many of the suspension units.
On the flip side there are some cool capabilities that these printers put
forth. The illustration I'll use for this point is my Locust turret. For
one thing, the Locust is a small tank, but it's turret is equally small.
(about 8.5in in dia. plus the little storage area in the back) To get a
nice accurate turret without the inside being bulky I designed the turret
on a CAD program and then printed it in three pieces. After gluing the
pieces together I fiberglassed it. This gave me a nice durable turret that
didn't waste the limited internal space available.

Tyng tracks are definitely the gold standard of this hobby. But it's always fun
to experiment with new ways of doing things. Using a sand mold like in this old
battle report and that cheap arc furnace, it could be an economical ways to
create a very durable track system.

To get a different perspective of the battlefield this last event, I
mounted my action camera to the glacis plate of the 25 Pounder, manned by
my brother Josh. In most of the scenarios player, however, the artillery
didn't play a big role, so there isn't a lot of footage. But what was
captured it quite interesting.
Some interesting points in the video: About 14 seconds in you can see
paintball spray shoot off the the T-70. (Middle tank) The 25 Pounder also
scores a high angle shot on the T-70's turret at 0:48. In the last scene,
both teams' artillery were having a dual for supply depots. The goal was to
knock out the opposing artillery's men and establish a supply depot there.
The very last shot fired hits its target, signified by a slight flash.
Pretty cool!

[TANKS] Zombie Apocalypse

2016-08-17 Thread Caleb Smith
Saturday battle, scenario is Zombie Apocalypse. Everybody starts out live,
when you score a hit on somebody, they become your zombie slave. They have
to follow your orders and try and claim more zombies for their master.
Shooting a zombie's master transfers all his zombies plus himself to your
zombie clan. The person who controls all the zombies is pronounced zombie
king and wins the game.

The video starts out with Frank claiming Paul and E-10 as his zombie and
together they claim Jean. After they get into formation they claim John,
Will and Paul P. This leaves Frank almost as zombie king with only me and
Doug (we were allied) unclaimed. But while Frank was trying to organize his
zombies I shoot Frank and therefore claimed all his zombies, plus made him
my zombie. My zombies then went and claimed Doug to end the scenario with
me as Zombie King.
Funny moment:
*Frank:* Caleb, get over here goofball.
*Me:* What?
*Frank:* You got five zombies here waiting to do something.
*Me: *Well then ATTACK!
What else could I say? I had no idea whose was with me and who wasn't. :)

Enjoy,

After reviewing the video taken today and yesterday, it looks like we
should be able to make some good youtube videos for those that weren't
there. It happens that my sister filmed the Locust's 3 to 1 battle. The
poor Locust, all alone against Frank, John, and Will, managed to stay alive
for over THREE minutes while also scoring two hits on the Semovente and one
on the PzII. And the only reason that the Locust was killed was because the
track got lodged between the idler and the tank hull, leaving her immobile.

Re: [TANKS] Rookie primer

Looks good, Doug. Another way of attaching them is to make a 90* bend with
a loop on the bottom of the music wire. Just slip the loop under a screw on
the tank (everybody has a screw on the top of their tank, right?) and
tighten down. Then you don't have to mess with velcro.

Re: [TANKS] Rookie primer

2016-08-10 Thread Caleb Smith
1. I like the idea of flags to help newcomers distinguish friend or foe. A
simple flagpole could be easily fabricated for any tank, and the CD could
hand out duck tape flags to members of each team. Any interest in this,
Frank?
2. I don't support the idea of patches or flags to distinguish whether a
tank is still alive or dead. As someone else said, dead battlers usually
make the "I'm dead..I'm dead" chant all the way home to keep from getting
more unnecessary hits. And it's my opinion that most battlers won't take
the time to tell if your patch is on or not before they start shooting. The
enemy only makes a mistake for so long.
Looking forward to meeting you at the battle, Jean, and seeing the SU-76 in
action. The more targe..I mean tanks the better. ;)

Oberst Johann,
While we are working on closing up this case, we are in need of some
information for our files. Basically, we need a copy of T-79's insurance policy
plus we would like to know how much you have T-79 insured for.
If you could assist us by providing us with this information you would be most

2016-07-16 Thread Caleb Smith
Oberst Johann,
Please accept my deepest apologies. While I am fluent in German, my secretary
is not, and mistook Oberst as your first name and hence put you down as Mr.
Johann while I was dictating that letter. I've since educated my secretary in
the basics of the German language, it will not happen again.
About this hydrogen fuel cell, Mr. Oberst Johann, it would be most helpful in
this case if you would supply us with all applicable data. We will have to
reevaluate all the evidence now that there is a new variable. If there is any
other information you can supply us, please do so post haste.
While we are skeptical about the role this Mr. Whiplash has in this case, we
will investigate him and notify the Mounties to keep an eye out for him.

Thank you for your time,
Agent "Smith"

Re: [TANKS] Re: Upcoming Battle

2016-07-15 Thread Caleb Smith
Mr. Pitteli,
May I politely reprimand you in assuming "Smith" is my real name. Our agents
rarely give out information leading to their real identity. But, for ease in
communication between our agencies, "Smith" will do.
In advising me that Canada is still a winter wonderland, may I advise you, sir.
Our contact there has reported beautiful weather with temps around 70. Hardly
winter, wouldn't you say? Of course, your report may just be a farce in an
attempt to freeze (pun intended) our attempts to recover Mr. Johann's tank. May
I also add that our agency has never been one of idleness. If we were to wait
for the barbarians to cross the border it might be too late for Mr. Johann to
make an appointment he has made with said tank.

We will try to cooperate with your team of 'retrievers' as much as possible. I
will send out a notice to our agents in the area to supply you with pastured
raised, GMO free, beyond organic, "Smith" Family farm chicken to supplement
with your lobster rations. Be forewarned it's gd.

[TANKS] Re: Upcoming Battle

2016-07-15 Thread Caleb Smith
Dear Mister Johann,
I've been going over the evidence with my expert team of investigators, and
we have decided that the suspect obviously took T079 for a joyride and left
his calling card until he could return. We think it possible that the
batteries died before he made it back and then he (the suspect) not knowing
what to do, fled the area. Therefore we find it advisable for you to make
an extensive search 500 ft out from Obomination's last known resting place,
the tank is likely to be found in that area.
We have dispatched agents to Canada in an attempt to uncover evidence that
would lead us to the suspect. We will inform you further as we progress in
this area.

Thank you for your patience,
Agent

Don't worry about the tank, John. I know of some excellent tank catchers. Here
is one of their advertisements:

Up for hire, 100% certified tank catching services. We have years of
experience catching errant tanks that have stopped responding to the operator's
commands. Just give us the description of the tank, the designation number,
its speed, and general direction it was last seen going, and we will be back
within a week with your beloved tank.

We haven't lost one yet!

All claims in this add may not be 100% true. Any damage sustained while
catching the tank are the responsibility of the owner. We are not responsible
for the loss of the tank in the event that we cannot find it. Claims in this ad
may or may not be true.

[TANKS] 3D printers

2016-05-03 Thread Caleb Smith
I have one of these.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRUSA-I3-3D-PRINTER-DIY-KIT-ACCURACY-ACRYLIC-FRAME-BUNDLED-FREE-2KG-FILAMENT-/181965678964?hash=item2a5dffe974:g:gt0AAOSwp5JWYPBh#rwid

While it doesn't come preassembled like the Printbot or Da Vinci, it comes with
an exellent assembly video that walks you through each step. Building takes a
few hours and you're pretty much ready to start printing. Calibration was very
easy. Customer service with that company is exellent. They replaced a piece
that was broken, plus sent a new power supply when mine died after a few
minutes of use. I've since switched to using a Corsair PSU for the power supply.

All in all, I would recommend this as a first time printer if you feel
adventurous and confident in yourself. If you don't, I'd go with a preassembled
printer with a large user base that you can refer to for help and general info.

2016-02-21 Thread Caleb Smith
Thanks.
I had originally planned to have independent suspension, but It would have
taken a while to develop. I decided to use a simple rocker design while
retaining the look of the original. So instead of having that slot in the main
plate, v2 will have just a hole for the rod and the swing arms will pivot on
that axis.

I 'hope' I can fit it. It is going to be tight. I'm using a CAD program to see
how thing will have to be positioned. I'm also looking into possibly having
the suspension plasma cut. If I can get it cut, the suspension will mimick the
real deal. If not, I have a more simplified suspension in mind that will be
easier to produce but will only look like the real deal, not work like it.

[TANKS] Re: Small Markers

2015-10-15 Thread Caleb Smith
I do believe it will be tough fitting all the gear into that turret. I think
the scale turret is somewhere around 8 1\4" in diameter plus the storage area
in the back. The real deal had a basket the went into the lower hull so I might
do something like to get some extra room. I'm also planning on molding a
fiberglass turret top to save internal room. It's gonna be cramped, but I look
forward to the challenge ahead.

2015-10-15 Thread Caleb Smith
OK, that's good to know. Right now, I'm looking at using a PMI Piranha for
this and pocket the extra cash for something else. I think with a few mods I
can easily make it fit.

OK, that interesting news. Now when you say "dry" co2, is that using an anti
siphon tube or just keeping the bottle upright?
OTOH,the E1 looks like a great gun. I'll have to keep a look out on EBay and
see if I can't pick one up a used one for reduced price.

[TANKS] Re: Small Markers

2015-10-12 Thread Caleb Smith
I'm beggining to realize that cheap and small don't mix. I don't believe any
of the suggested markers will work. Seems all the new guns are HPA only, and I
want to use co2. If a good option doesn't come up I might use a cut down
Piranha.

[TANKS] Small Markers

2015-10-10 Thread Caleb Smith
It is looking like I might be able to build a tank this winter, so I'm doing
some preliminary research. I'm looking for a short (body length minus barrel)
marker. Short is anything 8 inches or shorter. I would like it to be .68 cal if
that can be possible, but I could do .50 if there are no other options. Price
range?...as cheap as possible. :)
In case you're wondering, this will be for a M22 Locust. They are very tiny so
I need tiny marker.
If you know of a marker that fits the criteria, please let me know. I've been
reaserching but not finding much.
Thanks,
Caleb

Joe, just wanted to let you know that you don't have to figure the Smith Clan
into the meals. We have certain food allergies and will be packing our own
lunch. We also won't be staying overnight, just driving down each morning. We
can provide chicken salad if that is desirable.

Here is an in runner that is very much like similar sized brushed motors. They
don't have excessive rpms like a lot of brushless motors, and they have loads

[TANKS] Re: June Battle-AKA Day of the Failed Markers

2015-06-23 Thread Caleb Smith
The Quarter Pounder had a little marker trouble too. At the start of the
second Zombie battle the marker wouldn't fire when I pulled the trigger.
Turns out I forgot to cock the bolt. Worked well the rest of the day,
especially after the last battle of the day which Steve can attest to. ;-)

On Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 8:21:19 AM UTC-4, jvragu47 wrote:

limited video for this battle, forgot to turn off camera while waiting for
 OPFOR to get ready..

The day began quietly enough. Tanks being unloaded from their carriers,
commanders preparing their palaver for the days events, you know, the
 normal stuff.

But some of us forgot one ritual.. Burnt offering to the overseer of
markers. Joe had fired up his stogy, guess we should have been downwind.

Two markers gremlins appeared pre-battle. Paul's Patton was misbehaving,
not sure what was wrong as I came in at the end. He had dismantled the
marker and upon reassembly realized that 2 springs were missing. Luckily a
strong magnet was at hand to retrieve both springs from the forest floor.

Meanwhile, Frank's Semovente kept misfiring. No amount of gun oil or
changing of o-rings worked. And the gun had been torn down in the off
season and bench tested perfectly.. Our first casulaty of the day.

Doug's Tiger decided to imitate his Axis compatriot during the first
batlle, Zombie War II. Never did find out what the gun malfunction was,
but we had another asset down.

During the final battle, which involved controlling a river crossing
,controlling the artillery and having to capture the OPFOR flag, my Panzer
II marker joined the rest. It started just after Joethe Jersey
Kneecapper took out my left leg at 5 feet. While awaiting the medics, who
never arrived, I heard some gas leaking in the turret. As I drove back to
base, cold CO2 came rushing out of the barrel.
My shooting part of the battle was ended. At that point I could only hope
to rush the flag if we controlled the river crossing..

 Vieo and pics to follow.

They do look interesting, and the price is right. Maybe I'll pick some up for
testing. What would be the best way to reduce the rpms? As big as a reduction
as I can get between the motor and drive shaft, or a transmission like those
used for EV Warriors?

The Abrams is a cool tank. :) Would be neat to see one romping around like the
real thing. (Plus the Quarter Pounder always needs more targets) ;-)
Anyway, what is the approximate price that M01's usually sell for. I've seen
them on EBay for $60 with free shipping.
