Great work Niels,

I noticed you run on asphalt. Would love to see your tank run in grass.

Also, could you take a picture of your tracks after your running? Those donuts
turns are hard on plastic. Is this PLA or other polycarbonates?

Your tank looks awesome

This is the reason FOA spent months to design a MPSS system that works and is
adjustable

Steve Tyng TTS also has a simple design

For a system that is $500, that's worth about 25 hours of someone's time? If
considering that hardware is free! http://www.google.com/patents/US20150197133

But this group is full of ingenious people... And our own time is free fun!

[TANKS] Re: Hello

2017-02-22 Thread Loic atFOA

Pat,

First, welcome to the “club”.

I’m a vendor of 1/6th scale product, so I have to be careful of what I say
here…

First, Armortek kits are not $3-4k. It’s more like $5k+ for just the empty
shell of a large tank. Then you have to add all the electronics and other
components to reach about $8-10k for the kit... then you have to build it

My company, FOA, provides the Jagdtiger RC fully designed
<http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/foa017rc-1-6-jagdtiger-henschel-version-un-assembled-rc-kit/>

with suspension, motorization and electronics for about $2.6k as a kit.
It’s a MONSTER. Here’s a photo of a built static kit

<https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ce4yLjOx22I/WK3kvvGJ0rI/ASs/7kriQQTvQIwKs_anhphlrmCUNFe8hgTrQCLcB/s1600/smallimage.jpg>

Often on this forum, builders are interested to build their own design.
It’s part of the “fun”. I have found out that it is a very complex endeavor
to achieve the “best” design unless you have the experience of the finest
“engineering mind” from the members of this forum. I just talked to a
customer who bought our Tiger I static and installed his own suspension
system. He spent numerous hours of frustration and design changes before he
got something “acceptable” – still his Tiger’s sprocket seems slightly too
high. He is now buying our RC Kingtiger with the pre-designed suspension
system to focus his interest in other form of modeling, like detailing his
tank

I LOVE this forum, because it is a source of intelligent and willing
fellows who will help. FOA has worked with many of its members, whether as
designers or customers. And then there is the practical aspect of the
build, which is the actual combat!

But I think the pitfall to avoid is the total frustration of a far-stretch
project that undermines the finishing of the “dream tank”.

I’m wishing you luck and will follow with interest your build-up

Happy Modeling!

RE: [TANKS] Battery deal

Will,

I found out with the RC Commission Sherman tank that 5000mAh LiPo batteries
have a fairly short life on the battlefield. I had to revert to the 12V 20Ahr

LiPo form

Would love to hear about your build up of your FOA RC Panther!

[TANKS] FOA Commission Build 1/6th Scale Panther Ausf.G

2016-12-02 Thread Loic atFOA

Hi fellow R/C Tank Combatant,

I'm including two videos of the commission build FOA Panther Ausf.G. It's a
BIG tank and you might see it in combat at Gettysburg since Will is
building his.

Please enjoy the video. This tank is shipping "out of the country" as we
speak

Video of the tank running with sound and smoker (click here)

Video of the Paintball system in the turret (click here)

Please notice some of the upgrades we added, like volt reader, DC converter
for the RX, internal 24V charger plug to avoid removing the batteries, dial
up sound amplifier, multiple switches to turn OFF/ON the sound, smoker and
RX.

*NEXT PROJECT*: I've designed a NEW "Paintball only" tank, with standard
"shopping cart" road wheels, Tyng rubber tracks, TTMS, & MPSS. Mitch has
designed for FOA a paintball feed system that is reliable and practical,
and we are looking forward to two new Electronic Control Systems: Bluetooth
and RX/TX with high amp ESC that would be integrated with our new design

RE: [TANKS] Re: Centurion mrk5

2016-10-24 Thread Loic
I agree that this tank looks GORGEOUS!

And the concept of 3D printing application to the RC large scale vehicle is
enticing

However, I will follow the advice of the “old timers” of RC Tank Combat, the
Pitelli “clan”, Professor Sommers, or Tyng Tech prodigy: It’s all in the
‘donut’ turns on grass!

This is not the beautiful RC Tanks that I commission-build for customers which
can pass this test. RC Tank Combat is the next step up in engineering and
ingenuity to survive the Gettysburg test for 2 days in a row…

I’m impatiently waiting your trial runs

I would also be “pained” to shoot such a beautiful vehicle!

BTW, did you test the .68cal paintball hits on 3D printed parts? I have a 3D
printer using ABS filament, and I don’t think it could take a point-blank hit.

Cheers,

Loic

RE: [TANKS] Rookie primer

2016-08-10 Thread Loic
No sure if I have a “say” in this discussion since I’m not coming to the
battle, but a very practical and simple system is the VELCRO.

It has a sticky side, and the Velcro hook/loop on the other side. If you put a
dark red/dark blue patch on the 1”x1” Velcro, it can be EASILY removed and
exchanged with the proper color before the battle as the teams are organized.

One on the upper right hull corner, one on the rear. Neither on turrets since
they rotate.

One advantage: no recognition on the sides might slow engagement until IFF is
made (Identification: Friend or Foe). IFF is an actual appendage of real combat.

Another advantage: all units have unit markings. Israelis have V shapes in all
directions. This appendage does not distract from reality

Flags can fall, especially on underbrush, and exchanging flag color can be
cumbersome

[TANKS] Re: suggestion to help newcomers

2016-08-02 Thread Loic atFOA

I will unfortunately NOT participate in the upcoming battle, but Mitch and
Paul will represent FOA with the new E-10 (with some Tyng Tech Touch – TTT!)

I offered this very suggestion a couple years ago to put a color flag on
each tank. I recognize that it defeats the camo, and it might be replaced
with a “patch” to be less conspicuous. A Velcro patch could be used on a
predetermined location of the tank, maybe front and rear? The patch could
be easily changed according to team assignment.

Wearing and keeping the right patch could be part of the “rule of play”

I'm adding two photos of the E-10, now painted by the talented Paul

For those ‘flying in’, can we have a place to send the tanks “in a box”. Would
some members who are close to the battle site volunteer their addresses? They
don’t necessarily need to transport those tanks to the battlefield, and the

This is the first video for testing the tracks/suspension/lower hull. The
test is focusing on tree stumps and "donuts" turns in the grass. The
suspension seems too tense, and we will test with more relaxed swing arms.

The electronics is "homemade" by Mitch with the help of his son Paul. FOA
is still looking for a better alternative of the Talon SRX, which at $90
give very little economic sense from the Talon SR @ $60 doing a great job.

Hello All,

It's not because I've been silent that I've "dropped the interest" in
Paintball tanks.

With the help of Mr. Tyng and his genius mind, I've started the development
a "Low Cost" tank. We agreed on the E-10 Experimental tank which really
looks like a Hetzer, and about two prototypes were in various stage of
completion when the war ended

Since Steve was drawn to other interests, Mitch and Paul from "Backyard
Warriors" in California took over this project. Mitch is an Electrical
Engineering and a new member of this board.

The idea is to make a VERY SIMPLIFIED tank and keep the cost down below
$999 MSRP! *Yes, street price.*

*DESIGN:*

1. ABS body with inner metal shell
2. Integrated MPSS System patented by FOA, including front idler tensioner
3. TTMS system was not used and is now a welded drive from two MY1018 250W
motors - rear motor drive
4. Hard-rubber pads on 3 1/4" conveyor belt tracks - design from Mr. Tyng
5. No Gun Elevation, No traverse. Fixed .68cal Paintball
6. "Home made" control system designed by "Backyard Warriors"
7. Controlled by hand-held Sony PS3 bluetooth controller (one hand), with
one stick and one firing button
8. Still Pending: Air Flow Induction Paintball Feeder. It is possible that
this design will not be ready for the next battle

I've included more photos on FOA Forum
http://forum.fieldofarmortanks.com/viewforum.php?f=42

[TANKS] AAV-7 Fun Project

2015-10-26 Thread Loic atFOA
Hello Tankers,

FOA was tasked to build an AAV-7 in 1/6th scale for an engineering firm
testing the recovery of the real vehicles. No much detail is added. We used
the Tiger I tracks, our experimental M1 Abrams wheels in resin. This tank
is weighed down to allow water level at the curve of the rear hull. It is
about 200 lbs. Fiberglass lower hull, no suspension. Two Jet Propulsion on
either sides of the vehicle for water travel.

I thought you guys would be interested in this project

Video is here for ground testing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ8AyCgKBVI

Tomorrow is the second series of water tests

Ah ah Neil, Yes, I’ts a “bitch being right” for sure.

I’m an Engineer, so, like Mr. Donald Trump, I enjoy to be proven wrong! Because
being wrong help me hone in to the right solution! But it is politically
incorrect… (-;

My “thinking” of an “inexperience combatant” is that 3D combat is very
difficult for my inexperienced and/or untalented brain. Here you are mentioning
Mr. Tyng, but you may forget that Steve got both experience and talent.

Dealing with two motors on a single stick is intuitive. But a combat where you
have to elevate the gun, rotate the turret, and shooting at the same time takes
talent and experience (and luck?).

I hope to have the E-10 ready and firing for next year’s battles and we can
compare notes?

“Les Français aiment un bon argument »

Cheers,

Loic

4 I have battled against the Tyng master and seen the Cromwell drive a big arc
round my tank (T001 at the time) the turret was controlled to keep me in its
sights and firing many shots with most of them scoring hits. this is not
possible with a TD.
5 Sorry to be so argumentative , its a bitch being right..

RE: [TANKS] Re: Small Markers

2015-10-19 Thread Loic
Neil,

And this is the strategy FOA decided to shy away from. I’m building an E-10
right now with NO rotation on the turret. The problem with rotating turret is
the “thinking” that you can shoot faster an opponent by using your traverse. It
brings three issues:

1. Rotating the turret exposes your sides (turret sides to forward
opponents, and hull sides to the side opponents)

2. A small tank can usually pivot its hull faster than a turret can rotate

3. Without turret rotation, you have ONE stick for all your driving, and
just ONE stick for your gun elevation. It simplifies the tasks to your brain in
the middle of an “adrenaline’s full combat situation”

 Hi Tankers,

As a vendor of 1/6th scale tanks, I'm now out of my entire inventory of Talon

Now I'm in discussion with "Cross the Road Electronics", and the successor of

whistle", which I don't really care for since the Talon SR was doing a great job
My issue is PRICING: The new Talon SRX is $90. 50% increase cost on the ESC.

Also, the discounts of the electronics world are abysmal.

Do any of you have "other options"? I'm not interested building one. I just
want a product OFF THE SHELF.
I'm in urgent need of good, strong ESC for 24V applications - 100A peak
operation (I have about 15 ESC required for current sales)

Please help me!

NOTE: the Victor is not applicable. It will only take a maximum voltage of 16V.

Since I got the floor, let me show you a pic of a current project: I'm building
an AAV-7 for an engineering firm contracting with the Army. It has a Fiberglass
body, no suspension, but two jet propulsion on the side. I will post a video of

Ben,

The link you added is for a $190/ESC Victor 883 system. Do you truly put two of
these ESC in your tank? I’m trying to go cheap and I’m already complaining of
the $90 Talon SRX which does not give me much more than my old $60 Talon SR.
I’ve used 3 or 4 Talon SR in each of my tanks. Using FOUR $190 ESC would be
$760 of ESC in each tank!

I was talking about the Pro Victor SP

Those batteries look good Derek! It would eliminate the need to put two sets of
the 11.1V in series to reach the 22.2V. I did just follow the charging
procedure on these batteries, and never got a problem. You can charge them
super fast

Pricewise, you would save 16% too! Each of these would cost about as much as
the standard lead 18AH lawn mower battery – the one-time expense is with the
chargers.

[TANKS] Re: Gremlins of Gettysburg

2014-10-28 Thread Loic atFOA
I see that I travel back to the Rockies and all this 'chatter' happens...
Let me offer my perspective:

- The FOA Production Tiger I was present at the event, including the
systems: MPSS Suspension, TTMS Motorization, TTRS Rotation, TTES Elevation,
TTX650 Tx/Rx with two push buttons, CONTRL1 with 4 Talons SR, four LiPO
11.1V batteries, SOUND system, CLPS Laser, 50cal Marker - we also had a
spring actuated idler using a single MPSS system. NOT included were the
recoil and the fog smoker.

The reason I list all these systems is to record what I think worked, and
what did not.

*MPSS suspension*: worked smoothly. Some slippage of the plastic tracks at
times when the grass was wet or when in tight spots (ditches). I was slower
than the Cromwell, but still had good speed around 5mph
*TTMS Motorization*: The lock-plate on the motors were installed, but the
critical bolt to avoid the motors from slipping were not installed (go
figure why it's called a lock-plate!). So I lost my left motor traction.
I quickly installed a bolt and re-tied all the bolts and it was 15 min
lost. Otherwise, this system was flawless
*TTRS Rotation*: the 12 lazy susan worked OK. Now that I've seen Tyng Tech
new rotation system, with fine tuning and no play in the gears, I'm hooked!
But the TTRS was functional during the fights
*TTES Elevation*: There was a dead zone in the middle of the elevation
which was very annoying to fine tune the shots. Steve thinks that it was
assembled improperly and I will verify that when I get the Tiger back from
the Freight company
*TTX650 controls*: This system worked fantastic, both push buttons were
responsive. I'm looking forward to Cross the Road Electronics Hero system
with PS2 controllers still with 2.4GHz frequency
*CONTRL1 Electronics*: The Talons performed as expected. No problem with
any wiring. However, Steve pointed some issues like a 12-gauge between two
main batteries connectors in 6-gauge, which could be bad news under high
amps.
*SOUND system*: It is a 12V Benedini sound system for the motors (idle,
acceleration, full speed, slow down) connected to an amplifier for two 40W
speakers under the exhaust grills. It was so loud that it was hard to
listen to other players... but it brought some smiles! Obviously not a
feature for RC Combat, and I did not turn it on for most games. *NOTE*: FOA
is working on an additional sound system adding the extra sounds of turret
rotation, gun elevation and gun firing! ... just for fun!
*LiPO Batteries*: The Tiger participated in all morning and afternoon
combats and I did not recharge the batteries. I had the set of four
chargers ready for a quick one hour recharge at lunch, but it was not
necessary. I had great speed until the end. These batteries lowered the
weight of the Tiger by 20 lbs... and gained 1 mph speed!
*CLPS Laser*: First, the laser bracket was not easily calibrated, because
mounted on the handle of the marker. We need to find a more sturdy
position. Laser guidance would be nice for long-distance targeting, but all
the games happened in a small corridor to allow the fixed assets to
participate. Most shots were 'point blank' and did not require any guidance
*50cal Marker*: I was not happy with my 50cal. First, I had a lot of
paintball break in the barrel. Also the ball trajectories were hard to see
because those balls are so small. I removed the PVC long barrel because it
was not fully straight and paint was exploding in the muzzle brake. It
would have been easier to shoot with a long barrel as an aiming device.

To conclude, I would say that the 50cal Marker and the unreliable TTES
Elevation made the Tiger less efficient as a killing machine. I got some
shots on other tanks but I was not 100% functional.

Now about the event itself:

I counted 6 welts on my legs and 1 on my shoulder. Steve shot me 3 times in
less than 2 seconds in the first two seconds of the football game... and
then chimed that I screamed like a girl! Needless to say that in the next
election years, any suggestions that girls would not be as tough as RC
Tankers would be looked upon badly. At least John was able to score a
touchdown while Frank rammed his Semovente into my 'linebacker' Tiger, and
then accused me of scratching his beautiful paint on his front fender!

Photo 1: is the results on Paul's legs - hint, wear some jeans. My welts
are much smaller and not as deep!
Photo 2: Result of Semovente trying to push the linebacker Tiger away
Photo 3: Bazooka Joe, alias 10-yr-old-Dave doing some damage [red paint]!
BTW, he felt so bad that he offered me donuts TWICE after the show...

We might still have some small issues like sagging of the running gears,

RE: [TANKS] 25 Pounder Upgrades for the Next Battle

2014-10-21 Thread loic Anthian
On a “side note” to tankers, ‘Cross the Road Electronics’ has discontinued its
Talon SR product. It is out of stock everywhere including AndyMark.

Two new products will be coming on Jan. 1st, 2015 – Talon SRX made for 24V but
MSRP around $80. It includes other features like limit switches for gun
elevations or traverse. The other ESC product is only 12V and will be at the
same price point of $65.

FOA has removed all its ‘in stock’ Talon SR from the website as we need the few
we have left to finish tanks.

The “French Connection” will be hunting you this weekend on the Battlefield!

RE: [TANKS] 25 Pounder Upgrades for the Next Battle

2014-10-21 Thread loic Anthian
Isaac, I don’t have all the details on the new products… I’m not an electronics
guru!

FOA never had a problem with the Talon SR. It seems very rugged and never
failed us, and we used it a LOT! I used the dual Sabertooth as well, and after
two failed on me, I decided to use Talons instead

I said the “new” Talon SRX is for 24V, but it may be for 12-24V applications.
The other ESC is limited to 12V.

As for the limit switches, the designer of this ESC seemed very excited about
it, and if it has some purpose in the Robotic world, I would definitely see
some application in the tank world. But we will have to check it out when it is
available!

Cheers from Utah

RE: [TANKS] Remote Triggering - R/C MOSFET switch works fine

2014-10-10 Thread loic Anthian
And this will be resolved when we have the “Hero” controller which will replace
a LOT of features, like the pico switches, Marker onboard circuits, and 9V
feeds to the Marker, Laser. In addition, it will be run by a PS2 controller
which brings lots more capabilities, buttons and triggers.

‘Cross the Road Electronics’ is at the forefront of the Robotic world, but they
are now very busy with some production schedule. They will work again on the
Hero by late 2014.

Cheers from Utah… can’t wait to cross aim with you guys in a couple of weeks!

[TANKS] RC Conversion of Dragon Plastic Kit M4A3 Sherman

2014-09-05 Thread Loic atFOA
Hello fellow tankers!

I just posted a video of our conversion of the Dragon M4A3 Sherman with RC
Combat capabilities.

http://youtu.be/LbPgO9rWyFI

I hope you don't mind the Glenn Miller song in the background, or the
French accent The song should be credited to Oberst Johanns of this
very group! I will take full responsibility for the accent

I'm not fully happy with the tank upgrade yet. The tensioning of the track
is really tricky. Full U-turn on grass is still difficult, but we are
improving the end-connectors to Zinc Allow rather than White Metal (shown
on Video), and we are increasing the teeth length on the end-connectors by
increasing the return roller diameter.

That baby flies at 4.3 mph (6.9 km/hr) which is actually scale accurate!
Please note that I have 4 Lipo batteries in it (thanks to the advice of Mr.
Montgomery, of this very group again)

Please let me know what you think!

More detail will be disclosed as soon as we receive the test unit we are
installing in the ‘RC Combat’ Tiger I and Panther we are building

2014-08-26 Thread loic Anthian
Chris,

Just hold on for a couple of weeks, FOA will be selling a fog machine with
heating elements system for RC tanks. It can be tied to your sound system
(Benedini) or directly to your engine's ESC

It's the same basic system from this gentleman that passed, and the original
designer is selling this product thru FOA now.

We will have several systems: Dual smoke 1/6 system, Single smoke 1/6
system, and 1/16 system.

Cheers,

[TANKS] Metal Tracks - spin casting

2014-08-21 Thread Loic atFOA

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RR_3wyafPJk/U_Y3PaQCDNI/AMg/7RdAVU7ZZ34/s1600/pz4pwk_all2.JPG

FOA has entered 'a deal' with a US supplier to make their beautifully
accurate Pz.IV tracks and Idler wheels into metal!

The attached video is the result of this work
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6-Y6RGBfBY

I called this tank an easy conversion because there is a simplistic
suspension system with each bogie swinging around an axle. Otherwise, the
tank is a static tank conversion.

RE: [TANKS] Re: TyngTech is Invading the UK!

2014-08-04 Thread loic Anthian
I see liability all over this structure destruction! FOA is firmly standing
behind Tyng Tech, claiming that if the Vice President of the United States can
mistake a close friend for a flying duck, then Mr. Tyng could use the power of
the Tiger to bite the head off any cardboard structure.

Since we heard Mr. Tyng might be expertly avoiding capture in the US to join UK
forces, we wish him Bon Voyage!

In a more serious note, let me add a shameless commercial plug:
1. Laser Guidance now available at FOA
http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-laser.htm
2. 6-Channel 2.4GHz Radio/receiver with push buttons now available at FOA

3. FOA10001RC Tiger I ABS/metal Hybrid RC Combat Tank commercially available at
FOA next week http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa10001rc.htm
4. FOA003RC Panther Ausf.G ABS/metal Hybrid RC Combat Tank available in
September 2014 at FOA http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa003rc.htm.
The body is cut this week, we will test this new tank in August.
5. Metal Pz.IV track and Sd.Kfz.251 tracks available at FOA
http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa30001rc-902s.htm
6. FOA011RC Sherman M4A3 with T51 track pads soon available at FOA
http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa011rc.htm

To talk about the Sherman T51 track pads, we will post today our progress with
this project: The tracks are two grooved steel pins, sandwiched by two
spin-cast metal inner connectors, and cast into Hard Rubber. The outer
connectors are spin cast as well. We should experiment those tracks this week!
We already designed laser-cut sprockets for those tracks

There seem to have lots of assets at this 2012 battle. And that Swedish

to hit (unless there is a charge at point blank by the Tyng Cromwell!!)

Re: [TANKS] Re: FOA RC Combat Tiger Finished!

2014-07-10 Thread Loic atFOA
Few more pieces of information that you guys might enjoy:

1. We tested the above Tiger tank with 450W motors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANdYtKEtDCM#t=41 and 250W motors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASUPM0NWruQ#t=26 - I have linked the
respective videos of the runs, and you might observe little difference of
performance in the rough.
2. Tiger with 450W motors reached 5.5mph max speed on Asphalt, and 3.7mph
equipped with 250W motors
3. The second video (GoPro installed on the turret, 250W motors) had a LiPo
battery system
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=16786
(2 in series, 2 in parallel - 11.1Vx2, 5Ahx2). They are 0.9lbsx4 = 3.6 lbs.
It saves 20 lbs over the two 12V SLA Batteries!

I did some research on how we can test the life of these batteries
http://flitetest.com/articles/LiPo_Battery_Internal_Resistance_Testing.
LiPo should be stored at 40% capacity, and SLA batteries should be stored
fully charged (with a trickle charger). I'm reading that LiPo have 300-400
charge cycles (up to 1,000 if treated well), while SLA Batteries have 10
yr-design life.

Thanks to Will Montgomery for his advices on the LiPo battery system

RE: [TANKS] Re: FOA RC Combat Tiger Finished!

2014-07-09 Thread loic Anthian
Hi John,

To answer your questions:

1. Many sPz.Abt.505 Tigers still had their barrels in Panzer Grey,
including #300. Not sure why?
http://static-1.nexusmods.com/15/mods/449/images/hot/340.jpg

2. Yes, any music can be played with the Benedini system/Amplifier
(2x40W). We are still “playing” with the sound card because all we get is the
sound of the engine as it is connected to the Talon SR (idle, rev up, rev down,
full throttle), but I want the sound of the gun, MG, turret rotation and gun
elevation. These sounds are in the card, just not sure how to connect them to
the ESC yet.

3. FOA is not keeping this tank. It will ship to “Cross the Road
Electronics” in Michigan to be fitted with the PS2/Hero system, and simplify
the electronics. Maybe with a camera system as well.

4. I did not realize that your next battle is in August! I thought of a
fall battle and did not see any announcement. I would love to come. We need to
finish up the Tiger for production, then I’m tackling the Panther/Jagdpanther
in the same design form than the Tiger (Tyng Tech already provided the design
for the traverse system for any Jagdpanzer). Would love to bring a tank or two
to your “testing ground”. The laser guidance system still needs to be proven on
the field – the shaking/vibration of a running tank in rough ground is throwing
away the laser calibration with the main gun, so we are experimenting with
TTES-left-side mounting, maybe some plastic absorbers (suggestions are
welcome!).

Cheers from Sunny Utah,

Loic

[TANKS] FOA RC Combat Tiger Finished!

2014-07-07 Thread Loic atFOA

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9YiWTeTOSVM/U7r-JVA1ZoI/ALw/TIsXjAZYQlY/s1600/sPzAbt505_6.JPG
Hello fellow tankers!

We have spent a lot of time to put 12 working sub-systems in our 'RC
Combat' Tiger I. Some of these systems would most likely be considered by
your group as not necessary

1. Motorization TTMS
2. Suspension MPSS
3. Track Tension on the Idler wheel (NEW, individual MPSS on each idler,
makes the ride much smoother, and no more track jumping)
4. Turret Rotation TTRS
5. Gun Elevation TTES (we have replaced one element that created a lag in
the elevation, with a bracket that hold both sides of the revolving screw -
as the original system designed by Tyng Tech)
6. ECS Electronic Control - this system is being replaced by a Hero/PS2
Controller - more updates coming soon (it will provide much more channels,
remove the motor mixer, receiver, and all pico switches)
7. 0.50cal Marker (we are experimenting with .50cal paintballs at 360 fps,
which has the same impact/surface area than the 0.68cal at 300 fps - J =
MV2. mass of 0.5cal is 1.2gr versus 3.2 gr for 0.68cal)
8. Ammo feed - we dropped the QLoader with disastrous results at last
battle, for a simple gravity feed electrical conduit - the left side
storage box contains the ammo feed (see photo on SAG
http://www.sixtharmygroup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20518page=2)
9. Laser Guidance
10. Sound (Benedini system, 2 x 40W speakers with amplifier)
11. Smoker (Distilled Water)
12. Recoil (simple Quaterscale Servo recoiling the outer barrel)

I'm including a photo of the finished product above

and here is the link to the YouTube Video for the fully working contraption
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANdYtKEtDCM

I would welcome your comments, reservations, arguments, and plain
criticism! As long as long as you don't insult the French performance at
the World's Cup...
PS: music on the video graciously provided by Mr. Pittelli

RE: [TANKS] Re: Lipo's

2014-06-13 Thread loic Anthian
Will,

I have purchased x4 of the LiPo batteries your suggested with the charger.
I'm trying to replace:

X2 12V 18 Ahr lead batteries in series - 24V 18Ahr - weight 23.2 lbs

X4 11.1V 5Ahr Li-Poly x2 series/parallel - 22.2V 10Ahr - weight 3.5 lbs

The weight saving would be almost 20 lbs! Not sure what the life or
performance difference would be?

Could you help me setting them up and contact me offline at

Cheers from sunny Utah,

We do not sell batteries. We just source them for the customers. The lead
batteries would be tremendously expensive to ship to us, then them…

As for Lithium, I appreciate your advice. About half our customers are outside
the US.

But I’d LOVE to run those vehicles 20 lbs lighter!

Dear fellow Battlers,

I will NOT be present at the Spring battle in Gettysburg. I really thought
I could make it, but we had a new arrival in late April that rearranged my
plans (see photo attached). Mr. Lucas was 8lbs 8oz, and both he and his
mother are doing well... but not well enough for the dad to play tanks in a
distant land.

But FOA has sent an asset to Tyng Tech who will test some of our new
systems (laser guidance and QLoader). Our 007 Tiger
http://www.rctankcombat.com/tanks/T087/ will be driven by Oberst Stephen
'Tyng' Wittmann and hopefully will have stories of Villers Bocage to tell!
T087 is not the same tank we battled last year, since it is fully ABS, but
has the same MPSS old-variant suspension (with no metal inner shell like
our current RC Combat Tiger we offer
http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa10001rc.htm and
http://www.sixtharmygroup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20518). I am not sure
the QLoader or even the laser are fully vested for RC Tank battles, and
there are no better men than Steve to test them...

We are currently overwhelmed with orders for our static offerings (Nashorn,
M3 half-track, M3A1 and M16), and new projects (installed the venting
system for our Spin Casting operation, and installing our new Harbor Press
for Keyway broaching of sprocket hubs). But I will start again the
description of the RC Combat Tiger I on Sixth Army Group, and then send
that tank to Michigan for PS2 controller and Hero installation

Have fun with your battles that i will follow with great interest!

Cheers from Utah,
Loic

FOA participated in a Science/Robotic Fair at the Southtown Expo center
last weekend.

We had a 'line of participants wanting to shoot the tank! The Panzer IVH
had a malfunctioning Pico Switch for the gun, so only the Tiger I shot at
the targets! That's one reason I'm trying to eliminate the Pico Switches -
I found them unreliable, and triggering when subjected to shock (which
could be a safety issue since they trigger the Marker. The Hero
controller should replace the switches

After calibrating the laser, the participants were able to hit between 1 to
8 inches away at 50 feet! We will have to see if the laser calibration is
badly affected by terrain roughness during the Spring Event in
Gettysburg! On the first picture, you can see the kid aiming at left
target, bottom right corner - green laser spot!

I have attached a couple photos. More on our Facebook
pagehttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Field-of-Armor-Tanks/165372040259765.
I will post also our progress in few minutes on the building of the
Pre-Production
Hybrid Tiger I on Sixth Army

http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-talonsr.htm(shameless plug!) on
both FOA
Tiger I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXyqYxMlUvg and Panzer
IVhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJhG2f55sOA.
I have been running those tanks A LOT for the last few months. I have a
30Amp fuse on each motor. Never blown a fuse.

I should make notice that the Tiger I is about 140 lbs, and Pz.IV is about
110 lbs. I think weight is critical as to the amp draw to the motors. I
would also assume that friction is also critical (i.e bushings, bearings,
track design)

As Steve noted above, I also talked to Mike (the designer of the Talon) and
he doubts we go over 20 amps on normal operating conditions (continuous run
for 39 min @ 4 mph, going over curbs, donuts on high grass, climbed small
hills). He deals with ROBOTS that fight like Sumo Wrestlers. When two
robots go against each others, it sure could spike your amp usage. That's
what Talon's are built for!

Re: [TANKS] Re: explanation of r/c system mixing

I asked Mike the exact questions and this is his answer:

The FET's are rated at 100 amps continuous at 150 degrees C. The solder
will melt before the FET fails. The capacitor inside the Talon will fail
long before the FET's will

I'm not sure where this discussion is leading? I can only talk with my
experience in the use of the Talon. I lost a Sabertooth dual controller
last year. Never lost a Talon... maybe my logic is flawed, but it helped my
wallet!

[TANKS] FOA Pre-Production RC Combat Tiger I Ausf.E Late

2014-04-04 Thread Loic atFOA

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C6mvJO6eTk0/Uz7QMaGL-pI/AKU/BaUY5kl-dyM/s1600/TheHero.jpg
Hello fellow tankers,

I have started an ONLINE build of the RC Combat Tiger
Ihttp://www.sixtharmygroup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20518.
(click on link)

It looks similar than the Tiger I brought to Gettysburg last fall, but it's
in fact quite different

1. It has a Hybrid Body - ABS outer shell and 18-gauge steel inner shell
- it saves about 20 lbs in weight, it's easier to Detail, and would have
less problem with signal reception.
2. The swing arm suspension is now TWO layers of 12-gauge steel with a
wrap-around plate with hex lockers. Tyng Tech helped me in the design of
this system. Very clever! [last fall, I bent the front/left swing arm on a
sharp turn... welcome to large scale warfare!]
3. Addition of many features, fuse block, E-switch, now fully setup with
Talon SR ESC. This tank will be shipped to Michigan to be upgraded with the
newest Wifi/PS2 designs and a Hero (see photo). The Hero should eliminate
Switches and Mixer, and should provide low voltage feed to some components.
It should be around $100

Cheers from Utah,
Loic

I do like your shiny. what do plan on casting?

This is a spin casting machine with a melting furnace (the Vulcanizer is
not far). The 9 or 12 molds can cast Pewter or Zinc pieces that are
fairly small, but still useful for our purpose. For example, it will work
GREAT for the Sherman duckbills (see picture above, plastic parts above,
Pewter below). We may have figured out the track pad (T51 type), but the
duckbills need to be as strong.

It also allows FOA to cast smaller accessory parts that will not be blown
away by a Paintball hit! The larger resin parts will withstand Paintball
hits.

This type of equipment is used for Jewelry or parts of up to about 3 in
length. We could make the pads of the Sherman too, but I have an issue with
weight. I received the Vantek Sherman tracks from China, and they are
grossly under-sized but are functional. I know it's not big deal for the RC
Tank Combat crowd, as accuracy is not their drive. But it is bid deal to
FOA. We want accuracy AND functionality! Another reason the $1k tank is not
realistic.

Always a dreamer!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--sWAP0eU6X0/UzSJp_pl15I/AJw/YDX50oI8QLU/s1600/Furnace+and+Spin+Caster.jpg
The reasons tanks in this scale are expensive is because they are ROBOT -
including lots of working systems

1. Motorization 2. Suspension 3. Turret Rotation 4. Gun Elevation 5.
Paintball Marker 6. Paintball feed 7. Electronic System (ESC, mixers,
switches, fuse block, E-switch, ...) and in the case of optional FOA
systems 8. Coaxial Laser Pointer 9. Smoker 10. Sound System

Many will want to pick and chose the systems they want, but the first 7
items are required for a stable platform

There are other COSTS issues that are not often recognized by the new
people coming into this hobby

1. Many see the fun to build those tanks as a personal challenge to their
engineering skills. They do not factor the time they think through, design,
build, fail, re-build, and test. Cost of someone's OWN TIME is cheap to
that individual.
2. RC Combat is not for the faint of heart! Those tanks are dealing with
much more challenges against the environment that one initially thought
possible. Most tanks that i have seen break down after years of service or
new to the hobby are self-inflicted: Marker solenoid failing, motor
burning, tracks failing, gears jammed. More systems in the tanks, more
probability of failure.
3. Sixth Scale is NOT a proportional iteration of 1/16th scale or small
scales...

I do not believe in the $1k tank. You get what you pay for. But somebody at
RC Tank Combat will prove me wrong because they are ingenious, resourceful,
and have access to the occasional ESC or powerful motor for a dime.

A business cannot survive on those terms. We need solid, reliable and
tested systems - at reasonable costs. We also need the right material. See
what FOA just purchased and installed in their warehouse! (see photo!)

Hi Neil,

The field we do battle is safe on three sides (large building, train
track and another building/tree/storage). The only area that is not safe is
the road, where you can see some vehicles parked. Fortunately, the business
park is fairly remote and most of the combat of the video was in the
North/South pane where the large buildings are. I don't think any of our
paintballs reached the parked cars... but it might have been luck. Also MY
tank was the only one which could shoot in that direction, and the .50 cal
paintballs have much less of an impact!

But I appreciate your concern. We will try our tanks in the Paintball
Arena next time. The owners are interested by what we do.

Cheers from snowy Utah

Mike, I'm VERY interested with your rate of fire control device.

I know the gamers in your Mid-Atlantic group will want 1 sec or similar, but
some hardcore accurate guys would want the real delays. For a Tiger, 8 rpm or
7.5 sec, for a Sherman, 12 rpm or 5 sec.
The fun part is that there is a device that can control that. Great work!

Can I buy one?

[TANKS] FOA Pz.Kpw.IV Ausf.H Simple Motorization

2014-02-14 Thread Loic atFOA
 Fellow RC Tankers,

Since we are waiting for the RC Combat Tiger I to be cut, and waiting for
our 3D Designer to give us the RC Combat Panther G, we were getting
bored... and put a stock FOA-TTMS-HP into a Pz.IV Aus.H hull

Below enjoy the YouTube video of our result!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJhG2f55sOAfeature=youtu.be

Please note the tank is 94 lbs, fully loaded with batteries!
3.5 mph

... and the ground was so soft! which is tougher on the running gears. But
i was really surprised how those tracks and gears behaved!!!

This is good news as FOA uses the Pz.IVH hull for the Brummbar, Jagdpanzer
IV L70, StuG IV and Nashorn

*As a side note, a wink to Tyng Tech for his design on the TTMS system.*

[TANKS] Paintball and the Law

2014-02-07 Thread Loic atFOA
Hello fellow tankers. I built a HTML page about Paintball and the Law. It
will be posted on the FOA website.

I wanted to show this page to you guys first, especially because I used a
lot of info from the RC Tank Combat website on the safety tips. Let me know
if you think I should add/subtract anything!

Many people are scared of this hobby because of its potential liability.
I have already been chastised from a third party outside our hobby
because I shot Neil by accident while attending my parked tank. If I
followed the rules below, the shot would not have hit Neil, almost
suppressing him of his manhood!

I DO NOT SEE anywhere that it is against any laws of any country to
remotely shoot a paintball from a remotely controlled vehicle. The proposed
PA laws quoted below is for PEOPLE inside cars shooting from the cars.

Cheers from snowy Utah,
Loic

*Paintball and the Law*

*[Updated February 2014]*

*This series of articles is not meant to be a substitute of the ignorance
of the law in your Local, State, and Country. Please check your rights in
your location before using a Paintball Marker. *

*Please be responsible and vigilant in the use of your Paintball Marker.
Make sure you are wearing protective equipment for yourself and everybody
around you.*

Safety Recommendations from Field of Armor Tanks:

   1.

*Responsibility *- Battler and Spectator safety is the responsibility of
all battlers and the following rules apply at all times during a battling
event, or transporting to/from a battling event.
   2.

*Location* - make sure you use your Paintball equipment in a paintball
friendly location. *Outdoors* outside city limits/roads/houses,
   *Indoors* inside Paintball shooting range
   3.

*Transportation* - Always disconnect the gas feed. Ammo trays should be
emptied and ammo safely stored in an appropriate container. Gas cylinders
should be stored away from any heat source (sun or gas heater)
   4.

*Protective Equipment* - All battlers must wear a full face mask
whenever paintball markers are armed. Fixed-position cameramen may forego a
face mask when standing behind an equivalent shield. Always wear full face
mask to avoid permanent eye or ear injury. A paintball firing at 275 fps
(200 mph) might break the skin, but might only make a small welt or bruise
depending on the layers of clothes.
   5.

*Safety Precautions* - Paintball markers may be armed and fired only
when and where specifically authorized by the Contest Director. At all
other times, the gas ON/OFF valve must be off and the muzzle plug or muzzle
cap must be in place. Barrels should always be directed away from traffic
when not in use. Incidental firing sometimes occurs when dealing with
solenoids and remote control firing equipment.
   6.

*Shooting* - A battler may not deliberately target or shoot at anything
other than a vehicle, weapon system or practice target at any time,
including other battlers. Violations of this rule will be dealt with
   severely by the Contest Director.
   7.

*Awareness* - A battler must be aware of all objects down-range from a
valid target at all times, including spectators, cars and building, and
should avoid hitting them whenever possible. This does not apply to
battlers who are standing behind their vehicles or weapons systems
   8.

*Time-Out* - If any battler announces *Cease Fire* then all vehicles
must immediately halt and no markers may be fired. When the Contest
Director determines that the game may resume, only he may announce
*Resume*, at which point all battlers may proceed. A Cease Fire should
only be called when a potential safety problem exists.

Some of the above rules are graciously provided by *RC Tank Combat *website

Re: [TANKS] Re: FOA RC Combat Tiger Video

2014-02-04 Thread Loic atFOA
Hi Neil, good to hear from you!

was the man hurt ?

Of course 'Doc' was not hurt! He is the one who asked for the experiment.
You noticed that first I asked him to put his arms down, to allow the
tracks to have a shallower initial climb, but then he requested that his
arms be up to see if the tank would go over his... well endowed tummy! The
tracks grabbed on his uniform and it went fine. The tank is 135 lbs, and
I'm guessing that the weight is distributed across the surface of contact.
But not a job for the Armortek Tiger at 340 lbs!

I have pondered about an extreme test for a tank, could it be to drive up
a standard set of house stairs, from bottom to top ?

I have actually tried to climb stairs at my business, with carpet attached
to the stairs. The problem is that only the EDGE of each stair is in
contact with the tracks. So it does not have enough surface to grab and
pull itself up. If you look at my first video last fall of the tank in my
garden, the Tiger has no problem climbing a hill with identical angle than
stairs (since there are stairs next to that small hill).

[TANKS] FOA M4A3 (105) Sherman

2013-12-18 Thread Loic atFOA
Hello fellow tankers!

Here's the first video of my work on the FOA 1/6 M4A3 (105) Sherman. It is
the Dragon kit, with steel inserts, including a fully functional suspension
that works like in the original tank.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnvC2iiIIhg

I still have some issues with the tracks. I'm using some plastic duckbills
from the kit, but I'm adding chain-link-plates on each duckbills to make
this part very strong.
Also, I'm offering two types of track pads. Those on the video are very
nice reproduction of the chevron types, but I will offer a FLAT pad to make
better turns in rough environments.

I also have issues with the TTTMS. Since the hull width is exactly 10,
there is no much room for working on the chains and tying the motor bolts.
I'm changing the design of the TTMS Low Profile to allow the motors to be
staggered.

As for combat, I think it might be a low cost/great looking option but
maybe somewhat-unreliable due to its inability to do DONUTS in grass. This
tank can turn in grass, but I doubt it could do donuts like the Tiger or
all your homemade tanks.

NOTE 1: I used the same hard rubber Smooth On product that Frank suggested
on this Newsgroup. They work fantastic! I add 4-8 hours in the oven at 150F
to fully cure the rubber. Reynolds told me that if you let the rubber sit,
it would take two weeks to fully cure.
NOTE 2: I'm going to do some failure tests on a MTS servohydraulic system
with digital controller at the University of Utah. It will tell us very
fast why the Tiger tracks do so well, but not the ABS Panther tracks. We
have new PP Panther tracks, and now studying the hard rubber Sherman and
Abrams track pads.

So let's come back to the remarks of Paul:

(1) Reliability of the tank when operated under battle conditions - I would
give it a rating of 4/10 because no donuts in grass, but still has good
speed - 4 mph
(2) Accuracy in firing paint at the adversary - I would give it a rating of
9/10 because the TTRS is fast, 5 rpm, and the TTES is fine tuned
(3) Efficiency in reincarnation - I would give it the rating of 9/10
because we access the turret or the hull in seconds as can be seen in the
video

Cheers from cold Utah,

Loic

RE: [TANKS] Limiting rate of fire

2013-12-18 Thread loic Anthian
A 5 second delay before allowing another shot is an interesting concept. BUT
it might have an effect on the Frontal Exclusion issue that Steve is
talking about: if I face an opponent, on a standstill, and then get a hit
or miss from that opponent, I know I have 5 sec to make a move before he can
fire again. So I turn around the opponent and shoot it point blank. I think
the limiting fire rule, albeit difficult unless there is an automated
feature controlling the firing rate, also brings the issue of the last one
to fire wins, so I will hold my fire

It would be an interesting concept if ONE HIT = ONE KILL. But since it
takes several hits to get a kill, I'm interested in shooting as much as my
ammo will let me. Plus, it's harder to hit in the field, then on a
theorizing discussion group. So limiting the rate of fire might limit the
fun

Another thinking of mine is that I am an accurate guy. I love accuracy:
historical, technical, etc. At first I did not like the 3 or 4 shots to
kill. But since we can shoot away, then, truly, 3 or 4 hits in a second or
two is just the same than getting an accurate one-shot-kill. It is then an
even play field.

My 2 cents from a rookie

Loic

I have developed a small, cheap device that sits between an R/C receiver and
a servo (or compatible device), and is capable of (among other things)
modifying the servo signal. I have named it the Servo Signal Analysis and
Modification Unit (SSAMU).

One potential use for this is limiting the rate of fire of paintball markers
operated by R/C. On detecting a fire signal the device would pass it
through, then wait some fixed period before looking for a subsequent signal.
For the sake of discussion suppose the complete cycle time was 5 seconds.

A prototype has been submitted to RCTCHQ for evaluation. A first-run
production batch is being assembled - I've completed and tested one and
several more will be completed soon at which point I will submit samples
to the Committee for Review of Advanced Prototypes. Time is the greatest
enemy, as always.

This solution requires NO modification to the asset (other than unplugging
the servo from the receiver, plugging the device into the receiver, and the
servo into the device). The device is programmable so the input signal
threshold, output signal value/s and duration/s, and cycle period can be
adjusted as needed. A nice side benefit of this device is that it can
provide consistent triggering (and resetting if needed) - for example it
could be programmed to move the servo to an on position for 0.25s, a
reset position for 0.5s, and then back to an off position for the
remainder of the cycle. (If the asset owner wishes to retain manual control
over such functions the device can pass through all signal levels other than
the rate-limited fire signal). It can also provide semi-automatic
firing - if the input signal stays above the threshold the SSAMU can
generate the fire signal once every cycle.

If there is interest in trying this solution in battle I will donate the
devices and provide on-site programming.

Note: Based on an online survey
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rctankcombat/pii27bEJUFk , Web
site pages, and battle observations it appears most if not all mobile assets
use servos (or compatible devices such as R/C switches) to fire their
markers and would be suitable for this device. A different solution will be
needed for assets which use direct switching or other non-servo activation,
e.g. some field artillery. Researchers at the DOD
http://www.rctankcombat.com/teams/DOD/ labs are scratching their heads
over this as I write; a proposal
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Mississippidefid=3413474
to verbally announce ordinal numbers alternating with the name of a southern
U.S. state has been rejected as being overly complex and geographically
insensitive. The potential solution space appears to be quite large - other
posters have apparently enumerated at least 555 designs.

2013-12-10 Thread Loic atFOA
After being and acting as a newbie at the Gettysburg event, I found that
theory thinking and practical combat might be two very different
environments...

For IFF, I would suggest something SIMPLE:

What about a long antenna on each tank, and colored triangular flags? As
this hobby grows, and tank battles involve more than 5 vehicles on each
sides, and team members changing at each battle, it is difficult to
remember who is who... If we put colored visible flags on each tank, then
we can easily identify friendlies and foes! The red team and the blue
team. Just distribute the removable flags at the next battle!

Below is a photo to illustrate this idea, but those flags are too big.

Just a suggestion!

[TANKS] Re: FOA Business Update

2013-11-20 Thread Loic atFOA
Michael,
Thank you for your response and input. I'd like to answer each of your
questions below:

1. Different spring rates. The springs are rated for 19 lbs each. They
are 1/2 ID, radial-over-center leg coiled springs with tangential leg. If
you try to source them yourself, it would be between $5 to $15 per spring.
Our Tiger is 150 lbs over 16 of these springs. The other tank hobbyist
from this Newsgroup can let you know if that suspension seemed efficient
during the Gettysburg event. There are TWO ways to tension the springs. The
coarse adjustment is made on the hex bolt head, and the fine adjustment is
made on the tension pate. As per our conversation with Dr. Pittelli [of
the Pittelli Educational Services, Inc dreaming of his trust in the Cook
Islands], we applied more tension on the first and last swing arms. I think
those springs can handle the range of small/large tanks available to 1/6th
scale hobbyist, because the real weight of the vehicle is in the
motors/batteries (about 40 lbs together). The rest of the weight is between
50-100 lbs depending on your built. Those springs can easily be loosened
for a 100 lbs vehicle, and tied for a 200 lbs vehicle.

2. Diameter of axle bolts: We use a patented invention here, thanks to a
brilliant idea by Tyng Tech. It is a standard bolt inside a steel sleeve.
It allows off the shelves and cost effective hardware to be used, besides
the laser-cut swing arms with hex bolt head cuts. The axle bolts are 1/4
with 3/8 OD sleeves. So your diameter is about 9.25mm. It is important
because it has to fit inside a bushing (3/8 ID, 1/2 OD). I'm French, but
live in the US, and this country works on the Imperial System. As I said,
it's a business decision based on off-the-shelves available bolts/bushings.
Otherwise these systems have to be machined, which escalates the cost.

All you have to provide, is a wheel with a 1/2 hole for the bushing, and
you need to also provide a rail with 5/8 holes to fit your swing arm axle
bushings! Then you have an instant suspension!

3. High and Low Profile differences? NO differences. Same system, motors,
gears. The difference is that the high profile does NOT fit inside our
Sherman tank. So we had to make a design that would fit into less vertical
spacing. I will add dimension limitations to the website, good point

4. Size of output shaft: This is a 5/8 cold-drawn steel shaft with a 3/16
keyway. I will add this info to website as well

5. Selling drive sprockets and tracks: We already do. They are NOT like the
ones manufactured by RC Tank Combat members. FOA tries to offer scale
accurate products. It is difficult to join practicality and accuracy. But
the Tiger proved that it can compete WITH PLASTIC TRACKS against the best
of this group (except its driver, who could not hit an Elephant in a
corridor!). OTHER TRACKS will be offered shortly. We are currently working
on the Sherman tracks, and on the Abrams tracks. We are playing with the
same RUBBER compound that this group uses for molded tracks. We are adding
inner aluminum shafts. As for Drive sprockets, they are tied to the
size/shape of your tracks. You will see R/C drive sprockets on the website
shortly.

6. FOA actually has a network of International and US suppliers. Those MSRP
are for them. We have been mainly selling STATIC tanks to these suppliers.
We will be offering them the full line of R/C tanks as well. But I will
remove the MSRP on the website, especially if customers would have the
impression of being fooled.

Thanks for your comments. Looking forward to more input

Loic

[TANKS] FOA Business Update

2013-11-19 Thread Loic atFOA
Hello Fellow Tankers,

I'd like to update your group first on the NEW products I've listed on our
website. I'd like to get your input as fellow tankers about the products,
price range, and interest on the items I've posted. If you don't wish to
comment publicly, just shoot me an email l...@fieldofarmortanks.com... and
I take constructive criticism very well!

I've added the three RC Combat tanks we are starting to commercialize:

Tiger I Ausf.E http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa10001rc.htm
M4A3 Sherman http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa011rc.htm(Dragon
kit with metal inner shell, reworked suspension)
Sherman Firefly Mk.Ic
Hybridhttp://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa012rc.htm(Dragon kit
available in a week or two - same shell as above)

But also all the INNER components:

2 types of Marker
Systemshttp://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-marker68.htm
2 types of Motorization
Systemshttp://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-ttms-hp2.htm
TTES Elevation Systemhttp://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-ttes2.htm
TTRS Rotation Systemhttp://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-ttrs2.htm
MPSS Suspension System sold as individual
unithttp://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-mpss3.htmor series
of 16 http://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa10001-mpss.htm
Electronic Control
Systemhttp://www.fieldofarmortanks.com/product_p/foa-contrl1.htm
I will soon add the Radio/PS2 Controller systems to this list

I've been soul searching on the pricing system for those components. I
tried to price each product AS IF THE CUSTOMER WOULD BUY ALL MATERIAL OFF
THE SHELF (my business profit being into bulk purchasing) - with little or
no charge for design. I know a lot of you are building your own systems. I
think it comes from two reasons: financial and the love of
building/creating. I found out during the past year that building a fully
functional and reliable combat tank is NOT easy. There are many
components with know-hows, pros and cons for each. Out of the 88 tanks
listed on this website, 50 are operational (57%) but only 32 saw action
(36%). I'd like to provide an easy way to the action.

On the financial side, I respectfully think many of you forgot how much
you spent on your systems. When I finished my Bill of Material, I found
these systems to be very extensive... and it adds up.
I've tried to take the best available technology, best designs, and most
reliable products. Tyng Tech has been a tremendous help.

Please give me your honest opinion as you have a long history with this
hobby

Interestingly, I'm already starting to get sales. Each sale is a new friend
to your hobby!

Cheers from rainy Utah,
Loic

[TANKS] 0.50 Marker

2013-11-05 Thread Loic atFOA
Hello Fellow Tankers!

I just purchased a couple 0.50 Paintball markers. I want to install them
on my Pz.IV family of tanks (0.5 is a 76.2mm scale size, Pz.IVH had a 75
mm). But I heard that the ball being so small has a better ballistic than
the 0.68? However, the weight of the 0.68 is 3.2g compared to the 1.2g of
the 0.50. Effective range of both sizes are around 150 ft (45 m). Another
advantage/disadvantage of the 0.50 caliber might be the thickness of its
soft gel shell, which would be harder to break inside a barrel, but maybe
too hard to break on impact against a foe (less kinetic energy on impact?).
Impact are also harder to notice... but you can put a lot more balls in
your tray! (-;

Searching on the Internet, I find a LOT of opinions on pros/cons of the
0.50 size. But not any facts. I'd like to see realistic ballistics on
comparable gun platforms. Obviously, I'm going to try myself. I just have
to swap the guns on the Tiger.

I have several questions:

1. Paul Pitelli tried one of those markers in the past. Are those results
posted?
2. I asked Steve about the rules on 0.50 size, and it does not seem that
there are limitations on paintball sizes?

BTW, I have updated FOA website with some sub-components of the FOA
Combat Tiger. Let me know what you think [hint: advertizement plug]

RE: [TANKS] Re: French Connection was delighted!

2013-10-29 Thread loic Anthian
Steve,

I did not retain the side swing of the Tiger upper hull/turret because of
the weight of those elements and the required stress on one side of the
lower hull (which is hanging at the edge of the long fender, requiring side
braces like I see on the photo below). I like T001 with a car hood opening
because I can put the required hinges and strengthening brackets on the back
plate, and since the back plate is fixed, I can install the E-switch well in
view and easy access for Emergency power down. Also, I will add a small
hydraulic arm for ease of opening, and securing it open.

The idea of Derek on the Velcro turret removal is nice. I might be inspired
by it on this Sherman M4A2. The plastic turret is light weight.
Interestingly, the plastic frame of this Dragon Sherman takes paintball hits
very well, even at close range.

Cheers,

I didn't hinge the top of the KV-2 turret. Instead I created a lip on the
inside of the turret and put velcro on the lip which allows the turret top
to be completely removed by pulling on the the scale ladder rungs used by
the crew to climb up on the turret. Ladder rungs were made from a metal
coat hanger. I also used this method to attach the top deck plates of the
hull. I just don't like dealing with hinges and it still allows for full
access to the interior of the turret and hull.

I cant think of a better way to gain access to everything inside the turret
, the open hood moved completely out of the way and closed back with no
chance of opening until required.

If you copy T001 with your tigers you will have one less thing to worry
about.

Fantastic news about the Shermans. you will need to build them with the same
robustness as your tigers. we cant have battles where the Germans always
win.

I am seriously considering buying an amount of Talen SR units, but they arnt
sold in the UK, so before I import a bulk order I was wondering could you (
or anyone using them ) show your wired setup inside your tank(s) and give
your account of their performance.

Neil,

Your comments are very kind. Actually, I might publish some of your comments
about experience of building, difficulties of the terrain, and what those
beasts are faced with in the middle of two gruesome days of combat. I don't
think many people realize the engineering difficulties involved.

I have some cool new stuffs I'm working on right now:

1. I switched my idea of a coaxial Airsoft engine to a green high
power laser pointer. It is being fitted in my Prototype II Tiger right now,
with ability to calibrate it at 50 ft with the marker (4 small screws on the
tail end of the pointer). We can see that green point until that distance in
daylight

2. I acquired many 1/6 scale static plastic Shermans. I always wanted
an enemy to the German line of tanks I carry. So I'm feverishly working on
beefing up that hull for a full fledge Combat Sherman - it will be only
90-100 lbs according to my calculations. I'm not sure it will work yet, but
the suspension is already thought thru, and the tracks might be the only
weak link. Testing will tell. If it doesn't work, it will be an RC tank,
that's all.

3. The prototype II tiger will have a open hood feature like the
Tiger you used at Gettysburg. Did you like that option of opening the hull
like that?

RE: [TANKS] French Connection was delighted!

2013-10-23 Thread loic Anthian
Chris,

To answer your questions:

first, how did the Talon's hold up? did they ever overheat or show any kind
of problems? (and anyone that's also been using them) and how were you
powering it/them? i see you have on the page you had 12 volt batteries but i
didn't see if you were running 12 or 24 volt and what amperage

First, T087 runs on 24V, x2 12V batteries in series. The Talon are directly
powered to the batteries. No problems with the Talon SR. However, I did not
check overheating after each combat. FYI, the outfit in Michigan who
installed the control system blew my Sabertooth dual controller for the
rotation/elevation motors. So they replaced it with two more Talon SR. They
are located on the side hull.

looking at the last picture on page 2 it looks like that tracks are showing
a bit of wear all ready, about how much run time do you think they had by
the time that picture was taken?

T087 tracks are the standard FOA Static Tiger tracks. Amazingly, they held
up like a champion! I have NEVER broken a link. Those tracks and pins are
ABS injection molded plastic right here in Utah. I would not worry about the
wear. The only part that wore are the ice cleats. They are about 0.026
tall. There is 0.16 of plastic underneath them, across the entire track
width - the surface ratio between cleats/track below cleats is 34! The wear
most likely happened in Utah and Michigan, where the tank was tested on
asphalt and concrete. I would not worry about wear in the woods. I ran the
ABS Tiger prototype for about 6 miles.

i do like the turret sprocket as well and would like to know more about it
(mainly like that smaller geared motor vs the wiper motor and chain mine
has). now it the geared motor on a tension spring to handle any off-set in
the mounting of the ring gear?

The turret has an ABS ring mounted on a standard 12 lazy Susan. The small
pinion is also ABS, but is sandwiched between two laser-cut plates, fitting
into the motor flattened shaft. The motor mount is spring loaded since the
Tiger has a long barrel and we don't want to hit a tree at full speed! That
ABS gear ring is being redesigned because the teeth have some play with the
small pinion and create a slight hesitation on the rotation

does that say Eastwood in there, as in automotive material? and what is
that? at first i thought you had added some additional aluminum plating to
the inside of the hull

The Eastwood Thermo Coustic self-adhesive plates are used in the car
industry to sound proof your vehicle. They have incredible ability to kill
vibration. FOA tanks are in metal. I can't stand a rattling tank. It
should make some noise, but not like a rattlesnake!!

Cheers from Utah

Loic

chris

Doug, I use a laser cutter that is very affordable. If you send me your
drawings (DXF, Corel draw or preferably Solid Works files) , I can have
them bid out and you can decide

 Hi Steve –

In the spring, you mentioned getting some internal gears made up. Do you
know of a good (cheap) place to have that done ? I’m thinking laser cut out
 of ABS or Delrin.

   Thanks,

Quartermaster,

One French Visitor is to be added on both Saturday and Sunday, but the
stomach capacity is very small as per his size.

Herr Generaloberst,

The quartermaster needs to know how many sides of beef,
suckling pigs, ears of corn , casks of ale and tins of Spam to order for the
fall battle. Which is being held the last Saturday and Sunday of September
in the year 2013. The number of attendees and their respective stomach
capacities would greatly assist in our procurement of the proper mass
quantities of the above listed tasty vittles.

RE: [TANKS] Battle Quiz

2013-08-19 Thread loic Anthian
Frank,

I'm considering coming to your fall battle in Gettysburg. I would bring
one or two tanks: The Tiger and potentially M1A2. The combat Tiger will be
in Michigan next week with a Robot outfit to install cameras and latest
control systems (wifi, ipad, game controllers). We are now finished with the
suspension system, motorization, turret rotation and now marker elevation
(thanks to Steve!).

My questions are:
1. Is Harrisburg the airport to fly in?
2. What time should I be on the field? Friday night? Or Saturday morning?
3. When does the fun ends? should I get a flight back on Monday?

I will most likely get a hotel room around and get my own transportation.

Please let me now as I'd like to get my reservations

Cheers,
Loic Anthian

The Mid-Atlantic Fall Battle is scheduled for Sept 28-29, 2013 in
Gettysburg, PA. Two days of battling is currently scheduled, in order to
give our esteemed visitors from elsewhere in North America and from across
the pond time to experience it all. We'll be cooking lunch both days and
Saturday night dinner at the farmhouse. Battlers may overnight at the
farmhouse if they desire or find a local motel room.

Since this year is (a) the 200th anniversary of the Battle of North Point
(when a bunch of Maryland farmers stopped Wellington's Invincibles from
sacking Baltimore), (b) the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg
(when a bunch of Pennsylvania farmers stopped the Confederate
Army) and (c) the 10th anniversary of the First Tyng Invitational (when a
bunch of crazy modelers fought each other), the fall battle could be the
largest R/C tank event ever held, anywhere in the world. We're expecting a
visit from two U.K. battlers (Sir Funky and his escort), as well as others
from the U.S. northeast and southeast. We'll have plenty of assets
available for visitors to use during the battles.

Plan now to be a part of history.

Re: [TANKS] Re: New Business

2013-06-25 Thread Loic atFOA
Today, we moved the Panther TTMS system into the ABS Tiger, which had a
second generation suspension system. It took a few hours but it was
straight forward. Then I was wondering if I will lose tracks like we did on
the Panther, what about the plastic sprockets? or the 1/2 hardened steel
axle for the idler?

Well, we took a video of our first run...

I'm not sure why no vendors produce a 1/6th Abrams. I would love to have
one. Maybe not even for battling, but just to have one. I would think

right person to design. A laser cut M113 would be child's play - all
straight lines and a couple of simple angles.

I would LOVE to test some FOA combat products in late September. By that
time, I'm hoping to have the Panther, Tiger and Jagdpanther figured out!
But those tanks are improvements of static model into the RC, then
Combat design. As our initial tests show, there are weaknesses in the
plastic tracks and wheels to withstand the rough environment. I'm sure it
would be very frustrating for one of you to lose a track in the middle of a
 battle.

But we are also working on our Modern Combat Vehicle announced for this
summer. We are almost done in the design of the combat
tracks/wheels/sprocket system. It will use the MPSS3 (3rd generation MPSS)
suspension system, TTMS Motorization, TTRS Rotation system and the
announced gun elevation/trigger system. We are getting the hull cut next
week! That tank might be on the East Coast around that time... and then it
would be nice to test it in your combat environment.

Not making any promise, but it is a definite possibility!

Frank, thanks for the pointer on Joystick tuning. We will do that today
and test it.. and video it. I want to look at over-heating of the Talon ESC
or motors today as well, using the model for a full hour at speed in the
dirt field across the business. Fans are cheap and most likely needed on
those ESCs. I would be interested to know what type of standard tests you
would do when you bring a tank to combat readiness?

 Cheers from Sunny Utah,
 Loic
