updating rpms using rpm
Hello, I am experiencing a problem trying to update my redhat 7.2 server using the built in ftp client in rpm. I am executing this command: rpm -Fvh ftp://ftp.server.com/pub/7.2/updates/en/os/i386/* However, I get nothing. No error messages or anything to give me an idea what is happening (or not happening) This works under 7.1, I have tried this on several 7.2 systems with the same result. Any insight would be appreciated ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
Re: samba with Windows 2000
no, i had the line browsable = no in the [homes] section. I changed it to yes and tried again. Still no success. Windows 2000 was known to have problems with samba because of password encryption, domain name controllers etc. Can this be related to something like that ? Thanks, Jatan Michael S. IPMASQ probs
I have a RHL 7.2 box that is the gateway for a few machines. I wish to allow these machines behind the linux box to DCC and ICQ files back and forth. Everything works fine i think going out as the packets are originated from within, but as i remember people cant send me ICQ files or DCC files. Many many moons ago, someone wrote a module that was easily modprobed in the kernel, however this was was in the 2.2 kernel days and even in the 2.2 days redhat did something to not allow this module. So all of a sudden when i upgraded to (6.1 i THINK that module was "broke"). The workaround i was told to compile the kernel and turn on or off some switch i forgot. Anyway, i actually kind of gave up on the whole thing assuming after time redhat would "fix" their kernel so that module would work, BETTER YET make a module (which i HOPE exists, if so please tell me! ;) that will allow rhl 7.2 machines to allow DCC and ICQ from machines on the internel network, behind the RHL 7.2 gateway (ip masq/nat whatever). Jim. PS* Im just looking for the easiest way to do this, module, ipchains, iptables i dont care. If that module exists i would be a happy man! Ive looked, could find nothing. ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Weird Perl Compile Problem
Hi everyone, I'm having some trouble compiling Perl (5.6.x) with threads enabled. I am attempting this on RedHat 7.2. I am running configure by typing in "sh Configure -Dusethreads -Duse5005threads -des" and then I type "make"... the results of which are below my sig. Egrep and perl and python and recent vi clones (vim, nvi) and emacs have "full" or "extended" regexps. Perl and python and java 1.4+ have POSIX regexps (which handle Unicode etc and have extensions for character classes for locale support). | Anyway, I checked out the man grep page and although I could kinda get | it. it's very 'immediately technical' and more than a little daunting. | Stil, I'm up for it. The core notion is that most characters stand for themselves, so: stand is a regexp to match the string "stand". All the rest is frills. The core specials are: \ The next character _is_not_ special. Eg: \. for a literal dot. ^ start of line, eg: ^first $ end of line, eg: last$ . and single character (usualy except for newline), eg: a.c matches abc and a-c etc [a-z] a single character in the range [^a-z] a single character not in the range () grouping | alternation within a group, eg: the car is (red|blue|yellow) matching the car is red or the car is blue etc * 0 or more of the previous item, eg: .* 0 or more characters ba*dbd or bad or baad or ... + 1 or more of the previous item, eg: ^(re: *)+ to match "re:", possibly with following spaces, as many times as it occurs at the beginning of the line, handy for tidying up Subject: lines like Subject: re: re:re: topic There's more, but those are the basics. "Basic regexps" don't have + or () or |, except for sed and vi with have () but they need special marking as \( and \) (for historical backwards compatibility). In Rh7.2, there is a default console screensaver. I use this screensaver, but do not like its timing settings. I spent more than an hour last night trying to find what the program was and where it was started. I went through all the init stuff in /etc/rc.d (I use runlevel3), but couldn't find it. I was looking for 'xset' settings, though X isn't started in my case, or anything else that looked like it might do the job. At 02:42 PM 1/26/02 -0600, cameron wrote: >Can someone tell me what the system entopy pool is (and maybe how it works) or >direct me to some documentation on it? If you've ever written a program in C (or C++, or a similar language) that used random numbers, then you're probably familiar with the need for a "seed" value for a pseudo-random number generator. If you seed a PRNG with the same value every time, it will produce the same sequence of numbers every time (not very random is it?). For a lot of applications it's considered a Good Thing(tm) to seed the PRNG with the current time when the program is started, but for cryptographic purposes this sucks. If you generate a key pair based on the output of a PRNG seeded with the current time then all a person has to do in order to guess your private key is grab a copy of the same encryption program (so he has the same pseudo-random number generator) and start guessing as to what time you ran the program. The attacker only needs to cover a period of a few weeks or months (at most) and typically only at 1-second resolution, so should be able to get the correct key within a matter of seconds on a good computer. Clearly this is not the sort of security you want for a "secure" web connection over SSL or the SSH shell you're using for remote root access. . . The purpose of the entropy pool is to store up measurements of unpredictable data (hardware interrupt timings, etc.) for use as seed values when generating random numbers for applications (like SSH and SSL) where it's important to have really random numbers. I'd suggest you drop by your local library and look at books relating to cryptography. The math can get a little intense, but if you don't balk at things like modular arithmetic and finite field theory and you should be fine. Most such books will also have a section on random number generators, and most good (often called "hybrid") random number generators rely on an entropy pool. If you can't find anything that suits you I can e-mail you a copy of a paper I wrote on random number generators last year (mind you it was a term paper, not a serious research paper). You can usually also find stuff related to random number generation in advanced statistics books (anything that deals with "Monte Carlo" techniques), but they tend to concentrate on tests of randomness and pseudo-random numbers, whereas an entropy pool is concerned with producing real random numbers. The "system entropy pool" is a place where the system gathers data which it can safely consider random (i.e. mouse movements, keypresses, etc. which are not predictable); this data is then later used for key generation, random number generation, and other tasks where being unpredictable is extremely important. Dual Boot WinXP/RedHat Linux 7.2 on Sony Vaio Notebook
I recently bought a Sony Vaio Notebook (P-III) preinstalled Win Xp, with C: (Fat32) and D:(NTFS) partitions. I do not have a Win XP CD, but only a Sony Recovery CD and it does not let me delete the D: partition (with Fdisk). How do I install Linux on this Laptop, I want to have Windows XP on the other partition. Nipun

I had the same problem when moving from 6.1 > 7.2, and I was using gnome and sawfish in 6.1. Fortunately, I had backed up my old stuff to cdrom, and was able to copy it over. Voila, good configuration. RH7.2 comes with version 0.38 of sawfish, but currently the version is later than 1.0. AFAIK, there is no official RH version later than 0.38. Here is the line that I believe does the trick: (custom-set-typed-variable (quote cycle-disable-auto-raise) (quote t) (quote boolean)) Put it in your ~/.sawfish/custom file after backing it up. Delete any lines that appear to conflict with it. If it doesn't work, I can send you the whole custom file for you to work from. RH7.2 sawfish has an acknowledged RH bug: the sawfish control center is not available until after accessing one of the sawfishcc subsections. Rh is one of the chief supporters of gnome/sawfish, and is the default desktop/wm for 7.2, and I am surprised that they have not come out with an official update for this package. printcap question
Hi all, I have finally solved my printer problems with some hand editing of printcap. The file says make the changes in printcap.local so you don't lose them on reboot. Do you put a copy of the printers entries that you change to printcap.local or how does it work. I need to add mc=10:\ and change the locataion for the filter the mc entry is how you get rid of the annoying Fatal error - maximum of 1 copies allowed message if you want to use lpr -#copies to specify how many copies to print. Re: Questions on fstab
I will try that Mike. The second "user" or the first or both? Hmm, about the virus, that is probably true. But in all honesty i use linux more than windows anyway, as long as it didn't get to my mbr i would be ok, which it probably couldn't do cuz it would have to execute windows api's right? Anyhow I will change both to users. In trolling around "man vfat" and "man mount" i didn't see any option for users. I got the current settings from a webpage on linuxvooodoo.com: "if you want to make sure that all users can use the drive freely, then this column should read: user, auto, dev, exec, user, rw. http://www.linuxvoodoo.com/newbies/mounting/mounting2.php"; Very good explanation other than that it doesn't work... I know my e-mail was unclear. In trying to make sure i got my point across i tried to be more wordy than usual, in doing so i kinda of got... lost. Thanks Mike, I'll wait to change it to users just because I didn't see it in the man files. If no one else chimes in, I guess I'll just try it and see how it works? I'm not sure I understand this part. Maybe ascii art is in order. Or at least an example of the flow of the mail. Are you sure you don't just need to change the MX record (of course that's useless if not using DNS internally. Or perhaps it is just a matter of relaying/smart pelaying that needs to be done. Sendmail: open relay from inside?
Hi! I have a firewall/gateway box (7.2 with updates) which has been working properly for a while, albeit with a very simple configuation (masquerade anything out, let only ssh in). Now, I'd like to put sendmail on it but with two twists: 1. Tell sendmail only to accept connections from the internal IP's (127.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.1). The firewall blocks connections from the outside, but defense in depth is good. 2. Set iptables rules to redirect *all* mail connections from the inside to the firewall's sendmail, then have sendmail make final delivery. A transparent mail proxy, if you will. Can anyone comment on how I would do both of these? I'm getting very confused by iptables, and also not finding the right sendmail directive for mc. Thanks, y'all... -- Rodolfo J. I'm a technical user (been using linux for years), and a syadmin - I happen to run my own mail server. Postfix + rbl domains + some regex maps == spam free. The spam I do get comes through the accounts I don't have control of the servers for (and I'm fixing one of those in the next month) - but its minimal. ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
Re: Filtering spam...
I have the most success with creating a separate inbox. I set up a mail rule that checks to see if my address is in the "To:" or "CC:" and put all the mail there. I am on a few distributions and also include these. What is not processed is usually spam. I usually check my regular inbox pretty quickly and delete most of the messages, and my new inbox contains mostly stuff for me. Granted this works well, it is not perfect, but from the client side, it is the best option I have seen. Seems reasonable, paying customers get priority service. Keep in mind that a large number of packages have just had updates released, and the server is likely fairly busy. > I don't want to understand this as an action to force users to upgrade > their services, but if this is the case, I would had prefer to received > a note in advance. Again, I don't think up2date (free version) has stopped working, just that we'll have to wait if we don't want to pay. I didn't subscribe previously as I thought $20.00/month was a little expensive, given that I buy a new version every 6 months. With the new pricing structure, and the fact that I don't want to wait, I'll be buying a subscription. - -D - -- pgp key: http://www.tuxfan.homeip.net:8080/pgpkey.txt - -- -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE8UqsleMAUbzJhSVcRAiisAJ4vfMabDOXVLr+6re58VIDMbrxRRACgoExA nHxCETW8igAX2zBx8idReqc= =hAYT -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Is RedHat droping the free subscriptors?
Hello, A long time ago, when using the RHN was absolutely free I subscribe myself to it with several systems to check it out. At some point the testing period was over but RH offered the possibility of keeping 1 system registered for free. So I did. Now it seems to be that this service is over. Even if my system is listed like having a "basic" service when I run "up2date -l" I have a note saying this: > Error Message: > Free service limited due to high load, please try again later (server > 142421) > Error Class Code: 51 > Error Class Info: > Due to extremely high traffic, access to Red Hat Network is currently > limited to subscription customers. I don't want to understand this as an action to force users to upgrade their services, but if this is the case, I would had prefer to received a note in advance. And yes, I received an e-mail from RHN offering new upgrades. The same day that up2date stop working... :( Any comments on this? Since /dev/hde1 is being mounted on boot, it is owned by root. "users" allows anyone to umount a device whether they were the ones to mount it or not, I believe. Perhaps that would allow any user to write to the drive also? Worth a try??? Mike PS: There are some security concerns with this method I would think. Perhaps winblows virii ignored by Linux would be able to make their way to your Win partition, now with write privileges ;-( -- "Many loads of beer were brought. Clarification of bus error
Hi, I attemped to CTRL+\ when running a text based application. The program then core dumped appropriately. After that point though, I began to receive Bus Errors when running any program. Checking online from my roomie's computer, the advise was to shut down the computer immediately (not software but a hardware shutdown). I did and now everything is back to normal. The question is: What is a Bus Error and what causes it?
