A simple:

---
FileB >> FileA

-

would do at the command prompt. If you want advanced stuff, use PERL todo
the job.

Thinking of switching to Linux (from Mac!) and have a fewquestions

2003-08-14 Thread Doug Lerner
I am seriously thinking of switching from Mac OS X to Linux for several
reasons. One is I just don't like being "captive" completely to one company
for all my hardware and software. I like the freedom and choice available in
Linux.

Another is I have been having serious problems with Apple hardware quality
lately. Anybody interested can read about it in my personal blog at

http://injapan.net/.1c3eecb8

I'm not completely inexperienced in Linux. I also have a Linux box running
Redhat 9.0 which I use for a forums server. And I have used both Gnome and
KDE somewhat, and have installed Linux several times on different machines.
So I'm not worried about that so much.

But I've never used Linux day-to-day as my main workstation and have a few
questions:

(1) Can somebody recommend a good quality, not too heavy, not overly
expensive notebook computer for day-to-day work in Linux?

(2) Do Linux and most Intel-based notebook computers support multiple
(external) monitors, either as a second monitor or as a mirrored monitor? I
often give presentations and need to connect my notebook computer to a
display projector. This is trivially easy with my Mac, and I was just
wondering if it would be as easy with Linux?

(4) I do my work mostly in English, but with a lot of Japanese mixed in. Is
setting up Linux to support Japanese reading and also input not-too-hard?
I've tried doing this before in previous versions with mixed success. Are
there sufficient applications which support Japanese, such as a good email
client?

Thanks!

Doug Lerner, Tokyo

Broken sound

2003-08-14 Thread Kevin Breit
Hey,
Whenever my system tries to use sound it freezes for 5-10 seconds and
eventually I get console output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] kbreit]# redhat-config-soundcard
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o: init_module: No
such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/trident.o: insmod trident
failed
sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': No such device

How can I fix this? This is on Red Hat 9.

Looking at /var/log/up2date as well as the output of

should help.

Minimizing windows

2003-08-14 Thread fred pasteck
Hi all,

In my quest to figure out this new RH9, I have one
other question I hoped someone could help with. I
noticed that alt-tab can be used to change between
windows, but where do minimized windows go?

Once their minimized, how can I select them without
having to alt-tab through them?

They don't seem to appear on the panel at the bottom.
Ugh. Very annoying.

Thanks,
Fred

Problem with an installation of Lucent internal modem ...

2003-08-14 Thread bEEnHeX

I'm using RH 9.0 (2.4.20-8)

As far as my default state of a system after
installation have not detected and installed my lucent internal modem
(Microelectronics 56K internal /L) I had to find correct linux drivers for my
exact version of kernel. I did it well.

The problem appeared after the installation of a
rpm package
(ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_8-8.26a9-1.i686.rpm). I have
not been able to until now modem to get to work. Network devices shows up the
modem correctly but did not activate it yet. It seems that I have stuck up
somewhere or have not configured my modem correctly then.

Is there anybody who have similar problem or any
experience with dealing with this kind of situation?  What should I do
immediately after the installation of a package?
Any detailed help will be very appreciated.

Thanx for any help.

PS. I have read a bunch of web pages concerning
about linmodems stuff, but nothing served me well.

Re: How to upgrade my main HD?

2003-08-14 Thread AragonX
I just did this a week or so ago. The way I did it was this:

1) Put the new hard drive in as a slave.
2) Used parted to create the filesystem. (parted also has the ability to
copy a filesystem but I couldn't get this to work)
3) Copy the file system with the cp command. I can't remember if I used
any special command line options. I think I did it a directory at a time.
Do not try to copy the /proc directory. The information in that
directory is created at system startup I believe.
4) Make the /proc directory using mkdir
5) I'm not sure how to do this part if you are using lilo. If you are
using grub, check the man pages for how to create a boot disk and transfer
grub to a new drive. Be sure to write down the commands because you will
be booting from that disk.
6) Once the grub boot disk is created, remove the old hard drive and put
the new drive as master.
7) Boot off the floppy and follow the commands to transfer grub to the
hard drive.
8) Remove the floppy and reboot. You should be done.

Now, if you have Ghost, you can just copy the drive with that. It works
for me.

If you can use exim as your MTA (or hack the script to use Sendmail), then
here is an MRTG tool for you:

http://download.cheetaweb.com/mrtg-2.9.17-1cpanel.i386.rpm

(I've installed it on plain boxes before, and it works just the same as on a
cpanel box)

Yes. You don't need X on the server to have XVnc server to run.
vncserver will
create its own X session.

man vncserver and man xvnc to customize things.

Do a custom upgrade, and deselect whatever packages you don't want to

set system defaults for login & password

2003-08-14 Thread LOUISE GRAY

I'd like to have logins locked out after 3 invalid attempts to enter a
server. I would also like root to be notified by email when this occurs.
I would like this to be a system wide default.

I have found the password aging chage cmd which should allow me to
force a user to change a password every 90 days. However, again, I would
like this to be a system wide default.

Are there system default files, such as /etc/default/passwd and
/etc/default/login in Solaris, for Linux rel 8?

It has the same problem as the RH9 from rawhide -- it
spontaneously evaporates from the screen, such as what
might happen if there's some kind of library
incompatibility.

What troubles me is that it's a brand new install.
I've done nothing else but install RH, remove the
existing moz, then install the new one, and it doesn't
work.

ftp server problem solved

2003-08-14 Thread Lorenzo Prince
Hi.

Just thought everyone might like to know I did get my FTP problem solved, and I didn't
have to change my file
permissions. Aparently the problem I was having was just with Vsftpd. I switched my
server to Proftpd and everything
works as I originally expected. Files can be owned by my normal user account and
group ftp and have permission 640
(files) and 750 (directories) and proftpd will list the directories for the anonymous
user. I hope this helps anyone
else who would like to use this configuration but has had problems getting vsftpd to
use it.

Fujitsu Amilo with redhat

2003-08-14 Thread Cuesta Fernandez, Eduardo
Title: Fujitsu Amilo with redhat

Hi all,

I'm looking for a laptop such as a Fujitsu Amilo D7820 or D7830. Is anybody running Redhat 9 on them ? If so what's your experience?.

Thanks

Re: Thinking of switching to Linux (from Mac!) and have a few questions

2003-08-14 Thread Shawn
Japanese support in RedHad is pretty good (IMHO). Just make sure you
include it at install time.

If you have specific problem related to Japanese I suggest checking out the
Tokyo Linux Users Group.

http://www.tlug.jp

There is a link to mutilingualization there or even better you could check
the archives which they request doing before asking. The nice thing is
they will show how to get English menus but ability to enter Japanese text.
Can be handy for some of us.

If you need correct Kanji for addresses, they recommened purchasing ATOK to
me. My Japanese wife also complains that the default selections aren't the
most usual ones, and so she has to scroll through to make the proper choice
more often than under Windows. We get by without it though.

As for mail clients, I heard the most recent Evolution supports Japanese
fine (earlier version did not) - but whether or not that is in RH 9 I dk.
I use M2 by Opera which is a little quirky but suits me great

If you need to do professionally printed documents, you may want to install
microsoft fonts. I am pretty much a linux newby but was able to do it just
fine.

Anyway, Japanese support is there so don't let that stop you from
switching.

(4) I do my work mostly in English, but with a lot of Japanese mixed in.
Is
setting up Linux to support Japanese reading and also input not-too-hard?
I've tried doing this before in previous versions with mixed success. Are
there sufficient applications which support Japanese, such as a good
email
client?

Personally, I'd use NFS on each client system, mounting /home from a
master NFS/RAID server. This will allow you to centralize user
resources on one redundant system, while continuing to manage their
identities, passwords, etc., via LDAP. You'll still need to manually
create home directories for each new user, but you'll only have to do it
once.

AFAIK, LDAP doesn't provide user administration capabilities similar to
what you might find with Windows/LDAP/AD(?). I'm not an LDAP expert (on
the TODO list), so I'm not going to be much help here. On a side note,
you might want to check out the Samba-TNG project
(http://www.samba-tng.org/). There might be something there you could
use for your project.

For your other issue, if you have a shared group folder, you'll want to
turn on the setgid bit to ensure all new files continue to be
group-ownable, allowing other users read/write permissions even on files
they didn't create (if this is a wanted feature). For example:

$ chmod 2770 /home/shared
$ ls -l /home/
drwxrws---5 usersusers4096 Jun 27 14:27 users

Assuming you have users "Bob" and "Mary", the next time Bob saves a
file, it will still be owned by the "users" group, allowing Mary to edit
it at will. For more information, search for "setgid", "setuid", and
"sticky bit". Hope this helps!

Jason,

When I set eth0 to activate automatically then restart
the network it fails with the following message:

Deternining IP information for eth0... failed: no link
present. Check cable?

I tried two different cables, both cables are known to
be good since I can use them to reach the internet on
another machine.

Yes, but I just want to use the feature that I can specify different umasks for

And I want to prevent users from uploading files with specific names (e.g.

vsftpd is much more secure, you can set user home folders
you can even hide the actual paths so that users
doesnt know where there folder is actually located.
also check man vsftpd and man vsftpd.conf

Mouse sensitivity.

2003-08-14 Thread Panos Tsapralis
I have just bought myself (and my laptop) a small gift: a USB Microsoft Notebook
Optical Mouse (it is replacing a 15 years old antique, which I'm still storing
away in some safe place for museum purposes...).
Installation went fine: "kudzu" recognized the new "kid in town" and properly
configured everything (now, I can even use the middle button to scroll pages of
text up & down, which was not the case with the old model...).
However, there is a small problem: its sensitivity is too high for my taste,
resulting in a rather high on-screen travelling speed. No matter what I do - no
matter which window manager I use (KDE, Gnome, WindowMaker, BlackBox), the
cursor stills travels too fast on my screen.

It's worth noting that this behavior is exclusive to Linux - the same mouse
behaves much more smoothly when used under Windows XP (on the same system).

Is there any way of further reducing its travelling speed, e.g., either by
tweaking some value into any configuration file or using some utility? Would the
situation get any better if I reconnected the mouse to my system using an
old-style PS/2 port?

TIA,

Obviously, something has changed if it was working before. Here's a
couple of things to check.

In /etc/mail/sendmail.mc look for the following lines...

dnl # The following allows relaying if the user authenticates, and disallows
dnl # plaintext authentication (PLAIN/LOGIN) on non-TLS links
dnl #
dnl define(`confAUTH_OPTIONS', `A p')dnl
dnl #
dnl # PLAIN is the preferred plaintext authentication method and used by
dnl # Mozilla Mail and Evolution, though Outlook Express and other MUAs do
dnl # use LOGIN. Other mechanisms should be used if the connection is not
dnl # guaranteed secure.

In other words, if this line is not commented out (dnl infront) try
removing the "p" so that it looks like...

define(`confAUTH_OPTIONS', `A')dnl

Also, I had to add the following DONT_BLAME_SENDMAIL directive to get
sendmail to read the sasldb after making /etc/sasldb group readable.

define(`confDONT_BLAME_SENDMAIL',`groupreadablesasldbfile')dnl

If you do make changes remember to do a "make -C /etc/mail" and restart
sendmail.

different ken here, BTW - that feature is called ARP,Address
Resolution Protocol,
the cable modem has learned the ethernet mac address to IP
address conversion for your
NIC card. You either wait for the "time to live" (TTL) of
the ARP table entry
to expire and refresh grabbing your new mac address, OR you
wipe it clean
with a Reboot or an arp -d (delete) command if available.

It's not a bug, it is supposed to work that way. Nothing on
a network
really "talks" in terms of names or IP addresses, it really
is done
using MAC addresses at the low end. IP addresses were
invented
as a way to standardize around the different sizes of MAC
addresses
between ethernet , token ring, arcnet, etc that were around
at the time.
The local nets build ARP tables to translate the virtual IP
address
into a real hardware address on the local network.

Novell's IPX was based on using MAC addresses originally as
I recall and
then "zoning" them for more complex networks.

See /etc/vsftpd.user_list

# vsftpd userlist
# If userlist_deny=NO, only allow users in this file
# If userlist_deny=YES (default), never allow users in this file, and
# do not even prompt for a password.
# Note that the default vsftpd pam config also checks /etc/vsftpd.ftpusers

set userlist_deny=NO and then the list becomes a white list.

Windows Sharing Printer

Hi all
I am new comer to Redhat Linux, I have redhat AS 2.1 on my PC.
I want to share my printer (epson stylus) which is installed on my other PC
(Windows 98), so that I can print from my Linux PC.
Let's assume the detail are :

My windows PC :
computer name : zeta
printer name : epson
my windows user name : sun
my password is : test
the IP address is : 10.6.7.234

My Linux PC
computer name : test
the IP address is : 10.6.7.353

Windows Printer : Epson Stylus Color 670

I have tried to set the printer through Printer Configuration, and using
SMB printer type. But when I used the printer driver,i.e stc670p.upp &
stc670pl.upp, the printer doesn't respond.

Then I changed the driver to "postcript printers" and try to print, the
printer is responding but the output is not correct (it shows Linux
commands)

All, I will appreciate your feedbacks.

Those are iptables modules, not ipchains.

I do not want portmapper running.

I just want to know why xinetd has a udp port open. As I am now discovering,
that port number changes whenever xinetd is restarted.

The suggestion to look at rpcinfo, rpc, and portmapper really has no relevance
to the issue.

Try a netstat -natpu | grep xinetd and see what you get. I am now getting:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# netstat -natpu | grep xinetd
tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:110 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
  20512/xinetd
tcp0 0 0.0.0.0:119 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
  20512/xinetd
udp0 0 0.0.0.0:760 0.0.0.0:*
  20512/xinetd

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# ps aux | grep xinetd
root 20512 0.0 0.2 2068 920 ?S09:50 0:00 xinetd
-stayalive -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid

Hence, the port number changed when I restarted xinetd.

The flash cards are likely formatted fat32 (vfat)

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/MOUNTPOINT should automatically pick the fs type
for you. If not, add a -tvfat to the mount command.

upgrade to Shrike Qs

2003-08-14 Thread Shawn
Hiho,

This will be my first upgrade of RH ever.

Three questions:

1) Nvidia

Will the file /etc/X11/XF86Config get overwritten?

If not, do I need the src iso to get the src kernel to install the driver?
(To install the driver for updated kernels, I needed a src kernel -- but
not for the orginial kernel distributed with RH8).

Is it easiest to just put the x11 conf file back toDriver "nv" (or
Driver "vesa")
instead of and then switch it back to Driver "nvidia" and reinstall after
upgrading. IF so, which is it for RH8 nv or vesa?

After upgrading, will my previous list of bootable kernels be gone so that
I can't fall back on them.

2) Packages selection

I read the RH manual, but it wasn't clear about what gets upgraded. If I
select customize the packages, do I need to have a list of every package
that needs to be installed, or will currently installed packages
automatically be checked to be included in the upgrade (and then I can just
select things like mysql)? If I don't customize the packages, will I end
up with the full base install? I need to save my data so I am not talking
about a clean install here.

3) Overwritten files.

the manual says .cf files will be backed up. Are there other files that
could be overwritten withour being backed up? In other words, if I look at
/root/upgrade.log will I find out that .bash_profile, or maybe some font
file (I have microsoft Japanese fonts installed and working) or other such
niceties replaced with out-of-the-box Shrike stuff.

I DON'T WANT TO DO AN UPGRADE BUT MY CD DRIVE SOMETIMES IS AT scsibus0:
0,0,0 and SOMETIMES AT scsibus1: 1,0,0 AND SOMETIMES CAN'T BE FOUND.
People suggested 9 is more stable so

You did turn on authentication in the mail clients didn't you??? It seems
to me that Outlook has about three kinds of authentication. The first is
Secure Password Authentication (don't use that), the next is SSL (you
don't want that), and the other is just a check box saying "My server
requires authentication" (that's the one!).

reasons. One is I just don't like being "captive" completely to one company
for all my hardware and software. I like the freedom and choice available in

I too find that with Apple, things work best if you use all Apple items.

Another is I have been having serious problems with Apple hardware quality
lately. Anybody interested can read about it in my personal blog at

Now that is stupid! I find it amazing that they find that warp
"acceptable". Have you looked into getting a refund. After all you are
dissatisfied with the product.

I must be doing something wrong, since it had not given me the same

I have never found any use for portmapper, hence do not run it. Am I missing
something?

I run sig_fam only because I have been told it improves the operation of some
apps. Despite my reading about it, I never have quite understood what it
really does. I am tempted to shut it down and see what happens.

I found that most times it is a permission problem. Be sure that the
directory and files are owned by postgres and set the permissions on the
directory to 0700. The other thing to check is if the postmaster.pid is
in that directory. If you try to start it with that postmaster.pid file
there it will fail believing there is another instance running. Also, on
the new box, be sure that the identd service is running and also that
the postgres account is there. You don't give much detail about the new
box, so I am throwing a lot out here. Also, check the shmmax parameter.
That may need to be increased. The best source to find what the issue is
of course the log file. If you haven't set up to keep that in the data
directory, it can be found in /var/log/postgresql.
Hope something there helps. I have been doing postgres for almost a year
now. These are the issues I have run into, and trust me, I move a lot of
databases, up to 139gb.

You might want to boot the machine with the RH 7.3 first boot CD, and
then choose "linux rescue" - to which you can mount the system in single
user mode, change the root password and also check some other issues -
like if the file system is corrupted - which would corrupt the password
database...

Just to interject - they are usually NOT FAT32, rather FAT12 - some are

Reason being that their capacities are SO SMALL, that FAT16 or FAT32 are
 way too wastefull on overhead.

FAT12 is more than plenty.

Media in RH9

2003-08-14 Thread Cesar
Hello everyone:

I just joined and I have a question about RH9. I'm
using that distro in my laptop (IBM T30, Pentium 4,
768MB Ram).

When I use applications such as Xine, Cinelerra,
Xmovie, etc and when I load a movie and try to change
the volume or fast-forward or whatever I do with the
graphical interface, the application freezes. The
movies play OK, but cannot control the dialogs, resize
the window, minimize it, etc. The only way to stop is
by CTRL-C (if I start the application from the command
tool of course)

In the case of Xine for example, I thought it was a
problem with the rpm I downloaded, so I compiled it
from the tar ball, but the problem persisted.

That happens in KDE, Gnome, IceWM and have really no
idea why. I noticed that in RH8 I had no problems at
all.

Could I be missing some important files in RH9?

(Just for the record. One of these days I needed to
compile a program using the glut libraries. I had to
remove the glut rpm from RH9 and intall the one from
RH8 because in RH9 the new glut libraries did not link
correctly to my applications!!! I wonder whether I
have to do the same for Xine, etc. but don't know
which files I would need to change.)

I appreciate your suggestions/help.

Cesar

Re: Mailing list manager: Mailman and majordomo

2003-08-14 Thread Jason Williams
Thanks for your input.

Speaking of docs for mailman, I found the web site pretty bare as far as
documentation is concerned.
Any idea where I can find more info on another web site?

Also, I noticed I can install mailman via RPM, but where are the config
files I would need to edit to create my mailing lists and add my users?

Thanks again.

I don't think Mailman actually *requires* apache - it should run totally
in command-line mode. Some of the commands, in fact, require you to
drop to command-line mode (like running newaliases, and in older
version, even creating the list).
Apache also gives the users the option to look at the archives, but I'm
guessing you're not going be creating archives anyway.
Setting up mailman isn't hard, and you can edit the list configurations
entirely through the shell (config_list to output the current to a text
file, vi the file, and then config_list to import the config).
I've never run majordomo, but mailman is fairly easy to use for most
cases. Support on the mailman list is excellent if you ever run into
anything strange.
I happen to be subscribed to Red Hat's Community Ambassador Program
mailing list. That list is hosted on one of their internal servers that
has no direct external connectivity so I can't do anything with my
subscription unless I ask them to make the change. It's working fine
for me and we've been exchanging e-mail for well over a year.

How to choose between ip 2 identical ethernet cards

2003-08-14 Thread don fisher
I have a Dell 8200 laptop and a docking station, both with 3c905C ethenet chips.
I wish to use the 3c905c internal to the docking station when the system is
docked. Otherwise the 3c905c internal to the 8200. In my office I would like to
run with both eth0 and eth1, but I need to be able to connect the correct ifcfg
to the correct cable.

The HOWTOs I found all assumed you had old cards with fixed addresses. These
could be specified as options in modules.conf. From the Net-HOWTO:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
alias eth2 ne
options ne io=0x220,0x240,0x300
But this does not seem to apply to the 3c59x driver. modinfo doesn't even list "
"io" as a valid option.

I did find:
 1) in /proc/ioports, one of the devices is listed with "(#2)" after it.
 2) in /etc/sysconfig/hwconf, one of the devices has subDeviceId = 00d4, the
other 00de.

Any assistance would be appreciated. I did try to RTFM, I just can't find the
correct "fine manual";-)
thanks
don

Unsual idea..

2003-08-14 Thread Kelerion
Guys...

I've had an idea for a "play project" I can work on at home in my spare
time.. but before I start on it I need a few ideas..

Can anyone come up with a theory on how to "convert an mp3 into a
number"? I know that sounds weird so I'll explain what I mean...

Imagine converting an mp3 into a wav and loading it into a wav editor..
you will see a waveform.. there must be a mathematical way of converting
that waveform into a unique number that will represent that waveform..
the number would be huge to hold all the information for the waveform...

When I say "number" I don't mean as in integer, long etc.. I mean as in
a huge set of individual integers..

Hope that all makes sense.. anyone any ideas on how this could be done?

Cheers

Craig

I use wwwboard and it seems to do the job. Quick and dirty but
effective.

wwwboard does not require any authentication, and any articles can be
posted without an e-mail address, or the user could fake one. There are
a lot of discussion boards that require authentication that you could
look at.

Go to http://www.freshmeat.net and use forum as a search string. You'll
have a lot to choose from.

Re: Unsual idea..

2003-08-14 Thread Alejandro Calbazana
Here's one that's kinda Linux related

Has anyone ever play with LCDs and Linux? I'd like to tinker with a small
kernel, an LCD panel, a wireless NIC, speakers, and a decent hard drive to
create a wireless jukebox. I've poked around on some LCD project sites, and
it seems relatively simple, but I haven't found any that have "joysticks" or
keypads to go with the small LCD (I'd like to put in a small keypad or
up/down controls at least). Has anyone worked with LCDs/drivers before?
Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Alejandro

Problem with network printing on RH 8.0

2003-08-14 Thread Phil Campaigne
Hi All,
I can't printover the network.
When I submit a print job I get the following error
[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# lpr [EMAIL PROTECTED] --
/home/phil/3465317ExtremePerformanceTuning.pdf

Status Information:
sending job '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 connecting to '192.168.1.4', attempt 1
cannot open connection to 192.168.1.4 - Connection timed out
Make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol
But I can ping 192.168.1.4 to which the remote printer is connected from
192.168.1.2 which is submitting the print job.

Is the problem in the print queues for either machine?
The submitting maching, 192.168.1.2 has the following parameters in the
print queue:

lp:\
:ml#0:\
:mx#0:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/lp.acct:\
:sh:\
:rm=192.168.1.4:\
:rp=lp:\
:bk:\
:control_filter=/usr/share/printconf/util/strip_control_file.sh:\
:lpd_bounce=true:\
:if=/usr/share/printconf/util/mf_wrapper:
And the /etc/printcap for the machine 192.168.1.4 with the local
printer attached is:

lp:\
:ml#0:\
:mx#0:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/lp.acct:\
:sh:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:lpd_bounce=true:\
:if=/usr/share/printconf/util/mf_wrapper:
and the machine with the local printer, 192.168.1.4 has a hosts.lpd file
that contains:
hardwoodthunder.OBJECTPOWER
192.168.1.2

They are the IP address and the name of the submitting machine.

What am I missing?
Thanks,

Also, within the compute clusters, you have essentially 3 different types
- massively parallel clusters, shared-memory clusters, and pipeline
clusters, each of which are better for different workloads.

Massively parallel clusters - The computation is easily dividable among
any number of nodes, and very little data is needed to be shared among
nodes.

Pipeline clusters - There are X independent jobs, so you can split up the
process by at most X nodes.

Shared memory clusters - same as either above, but a lot of memory sharing
needs to take place. This usually requires specialized equipment.

problem sync'ing 2 fs through network

2003-08-14 Thread Thierry ITTY
hi

i have a machine w/ rh9xfs12 OOTB, 5 disks making a volume group, and a
logical volume defined on the whole space. it will be a SMB and NFS file
server.

i have a second machine, same h/w, same s/w, on which i want to mirror this
lv throught the network. i tried several systems but choosed DRBD (which
makes a new device on the lv device, mirrors it on the net, and lets you
mkfs whatever on the new device)

each machine has 3 NICs, one for service (eth0), two for mirroring (eth1
and eth2) actually enslaved in a bond0 interface. they are all accton
en1207f/tx w/ tulip driver.

my problem is that during network load traffic stops between the 2 machines
and it looks like some nic just got frozen. drbd doesn't handle well such
problems and i must manually restart things, but sync goes from beginning
again...

I started with standard distro drivers, then got D Becker's original ones,
nothing changed (but i didn't get "NETDEV WATCHDOG transmit timeout"
messages any longer)
I tried with crossover cables, but had many errors on the nics (said
ifconfig) so i put switches between with straight cables, had only very few
errors, but still got blocked after a while
I'd really have this working, i know i'm very close...

i'd appreciate any advice on how to bond 2 machines with a _reliable_
network (in my case a 2x100 mbps aggregated link)

the machines will handle 1 TB each, with one active and one backup (HA is
not the main goal, just data redundancy) (ok so why not raid ? raid needs
to fit in one single machine !!!)

would coda or intermezzo be an interesting alternative (i first tried
intermezzo, but i didn't get enthousiastic about it -- maybe i missed
something ? -- and i'm not sure it is able to handle big or huge files or
filesystems)

here is one that turned up on a google search uses /dev/urandom if it
exists. Not sure about the POSIX stuff but the guts of the dd

Do you have an empty /initrd directory?
What does "rpm -V kernel" give?
What does your /boot/grub/grub.conf look like?
What does "parted /dev/hda print" give (assuming /dev/hda is your
Linux drive)?

rl 6 or 0 has all the kill stuff since that is what gets called at
reboot

yes assuming that the scripts have the mandatory start clause in it.
All files starting with a S will be called with start as the first
argument.

IIRC shutdown -h does the equivalent to telinit 0 shutdown -r or reboot
doe telinit 6

the key to all this is the /etc/rc.d/rc script this is where all those
links get used.

Seems like RH had a good tutorial on the Boot process at one time but it
has been several years since I looked for it.

man chkconfig has some info about what these scripts should look like

It may not be good enough for what you're trying to do but you
could look at the LOG target of iptables. This will generate
log entries for packets passing through a machine with a time stamp.
You'll need some way to pull that information out of the logs
and summarize it.

You might also want to look at the netwatch package which may
do everything you need without all the manual labor:

Re: Could not start kdeinit?

2003-08-14 Thread Doug Lerner
Well, I found the cause. Actually, a friend came over and looked at it and
he found the cause.

I had upgraded this system from RH 7.4 to RH 9.0. Apparently when you do
that some old shared libraries were left that conflicted. I would have never
in a million years found that.

Anyway, he found it by manually issuing the "kdeinit" command and reading
through the error messages (which don't appear when you start up from
login).

He deleted the conflicting libraries and KDE started up fine.

You might need to do a manual configuration for this, but if the
monitor supports higher resolutions under XP, then it will also support
them under Linux. It's not usually a monitor issue that prevents you
from using specific resolutions on modern monitors - it's video drivers.

Trying to change SCSI cards

2003-08-14 Thread John Aldrich
I'm running RedHat 9.0 (upraded from 8.0) and I have an Advansys ABP940U I'm
trying to change for an Adaptec 2940U, due to some problems I'm having with
my CDRW.

First, let me state that the system boots off IDE, so I don't need an INITRD.
Second, the system found the new card and added it to /etc/modules.conf,
however, my problem is that it doesn't appear to find it at boot time, and
load the module for it, despite it being in /etc/modules.conf.

Can someone please tell me EXACTLY what to change to make the system boot up
with the AIC7xxx driver?
Thanks...

You want the package kernel-source-2.4.20-19.8.i386.rpm and you can
find it in the ./i386 directory at the same place where you obtained
your new kernel package. In case you used an automatic tool to apply
the kernel updates, you just need to update the package named
"kernel-source", too.

Thanks for the reply. I have asked this question several places since I wasn't

Power Management

I would like to get the power management features working on my Dell Inspiron 5000e. The only things that seem to work right now are, the LCD turns off after a specified time (defined in Xscreensaver), and I can Suspend-to-RAM.

I would like to be able to Suspend-to-Disk (I have created a partition for this), have the system suspend to RAM (or disk) after a specified period of inactivity and at a certain battery level. Is this possible?

I just joined this list, so if this was discussed before, I apologize.

The NFS wasn't mounted. Maybe that's the problem.

Here part of my fstab if this helps:
