Rogue ICMP Attempts??
Hi. I have a strange problem. I have an RH9 machine that I've been using to test OpenNMS. I believe my problem is related to OpenNMS but I can't get an asnwer on their list. Hoping someone here might have some ideas. The following services are NOT started up on boot: Tomcat4 Postgresql OpenNMS If I run Ethereal I see a whole bunch of ICMP attempts. What's weird, and I guess good, is that all say destination unreachable, even though they should be reachable. I can't figure out what process is doing all these ICMP requests. It's doubtful that this machine is compromised being on an internal private net, but anything is possible. I ran a chkrootkit and everything looks ok from there. I first noticed this problem when restarting OpenNMS. When it is initially running I don't seem to have the problem, but if I stop it, or even just restart it, the problem starts again. My current running processes are listed below. I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary in the logs. Any suggestions? Thanks, James [EMAIL PROTECTED] chkrootkit-0.42b]# ps -ef UIDPID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD root 1 0 0 08:26 ?00:00:04 init root 2 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [keventd] root 3 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [kapmd] root 4 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [ksoftirqd_CPU0] root 9 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [bdflush] root 5 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [kswapd] root 6 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [kscand/DMA] root 7 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [kscand/Normal] root 8 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:02 [kscand/HighMem] root10 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [kupdated] root11 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [mdrecoveryd] root15 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [kjournald] root73 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [khubd] root 2796 1 0 08:26 ?00:00:00 [kjournald] root 3092 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 syslogd -m 0 root 3096 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 klogd -x rpc 3114 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 [portmap] root 3202 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/sshd root 3217 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 xinetd -stayalive -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid ntp 3234 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 [ntpd] root 3243 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 gpm -t ps/2 -m /dev/mouse root 3252 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 crond xfs 3323 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 [xfs] daemon3341 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 [atd] root 3353 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 smbd -D root 3357 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 nmbd -D root 3364 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl /usr/libexec/webmin/miniserv.pl /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf root 3367 1 0 08:27 tty1 00:00:00 /sbin/mingetty tty1 root 3368 1 0 08:27 tty2 00:00:00 /sbin/mingetty tty2 root 3369 1 0 08:27 tty3 00:00:00 /sbin/mingetty tty3 root 3370 1 0 08:27 tty4 00:00:00 /sbin/mingetty tty4 root 3371 1 0 08:27 tty5 00:00:00 /sbin/mingetty tty5 root 3372 1 0 08:27 tty6 00:00:00 /sbin/mingetty tty6 root 3373 1 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 [gdm-binary] root 3418 3373 0 08:27 ?00:00:00 [gdm-binary] root 3419 3418 0 08:27 ?00:00:21 /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth vt7 root 3428 3418 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 /usr/bin/gnome-session root 3488 3428 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 /usr/bin/ssh-agent /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients root 3499 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:01 /usr/libexec/gconfd-2 11 root 3501 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 /usr/libexec/bonobo-activation-server --ac-activate --ior-output-fd=16 root 3505 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 gnome-settings-daemon --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon --o root 3512 3217 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 [fam] root 3519 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:03 gnome-panel --sm-client-id default2 root 3521 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:02 nautilus --no-default-window --sm-client-id default3 root 3523 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 magicdev --sm-client-id default4 root 3526 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 eggcups --sm-client-id default6 root 3528 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 pam-panel-icon --sm-client-id default0 root 3531 3528 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 /sbin/pam_timestamp_check -d root root 3537 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 /usr/libexec/notification-area-applet --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_No root 3539 1 0 08:33 ?00:00:01 /usr/bin/gnome-terminal root 3540 3539 0 08:33 ?00:00:00 [gnome-pty-helpe] root 3541 3539 0 08:33 pts/000:00:00 bash root 3569 3541 0 08:34 pts/000:00:05 ethereal root 3585 3353 0 08:36 ?00:00:00 [smbd] root 3605 1 0 08:38 ?00:00:01 metacity --sm-save-file 1064406831-3503-10

Re: PDF Converter on Linux/Redhat
Actually there are quit a few on Windows that convert many file types: Microsoft Office Apps, Text, HTML. Some are free others aren't. A few claim to convert almost any file type under windows. It may just be easier to buy one of these and run it on a windows machine. :-( James On Tue, 2003-09-16 at 19:59, Reuben D. RE: PDF Converter on Linux/Redhat
Sorry for the late delay. Lost my d*** internet connection. Anyway... I got a little more information. The web application sticks files in a directory that need to be converted, like a before directory . So I need a converter to periodically check that directory, convert the files, and stick them in another directory, like an after directory. The application itself does not call a printer or print driver. Unfortunately it's not something that I could easily change either. Sorry for the lack of details initially. PDF Converter on Linux/Redhat
Sorry if this has been asked before. I'm looking for a PDF converter that will run on Linux for a web application. I did some googling and found some that did specific things, like postscript to PDF, but not enough. There are some apps that run on Windoze that will convert html, word docs, excel docs, text files, JPG, etc to PDF. I'm trying to find one that will do these conversions on a Linux machine or else I'm going to be stuck running Windoze. Any help is appreciated. OT: Evolution Default Paper Type
Sorry for the OT post. Anyone know how to change the default paper type in Evolution? Mine is set to A4. I cannot find anyway of chaning it within Evolution. Google search found a suggestion to use .lpoptions file. This didn't work for me, but could be I didn't set it up correctly. I didn't find anything on Ximian's site for this. I can print fine from the other apps, Mozilla, Editor, etc without changing the paper type. I'm running Gnome. Yeah, you're probably on the right track. The Dell machine is a PIII 1Ghz and the AMD is a Pro 1400+. I'll see if I can copy the boot stuff over. Swapped Hard Drives
I have two development machines both running RH9. The machines are completely different hardware. One is a Dell Optiplex and the other is a white box AMD. I needed to switch the hard drives to take advantage of the white box AMD having double the RAM as the Dell. I took the Dell's hard drive, stuck it in the white box, followed the prompts for adding and removing hardware, and after setting up X, it's running like a champ. Taking the white box AMD's hard drive and sticking it in the Dell's machine has not gone as smoothly. It gets to the grub menu, and then it reboots. The drives were the only and primary drives in each system. I'd rather not reinstall this machine since I had a some stuff installed that would take a while to install again. Any suggestions on how to get this one going again? Thanks, James -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

In my case this was solved by Sean's suggestion to make sure I had forwarding enabled, which I didn't. Apparently I sent my reply directly to Sean instead of the list. Oops. Re: Port Forward 1 Port
In this case another device isn't really an option. I tried this: # iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p udp -d 10.96.5.5 --dport 162 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.18:162 # iptables -A FORWARD -p udp -d 192.168.1.18 --dport 162 -j ACCEPT # iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination ACCEPT udp -- anywhere 192.168.1.18 udp dpt:snmptrap Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination # It's not forwarding anything though. Before anyone asks, the networks 10.96.5.x and 192.168.1.x are reachable. I have Ethreal running capturing 162 on both systems. 10.96.5.5 is receiving tons of 162's, 192.168.1.18 is not receiving any. Tells me the forward isn't working. Any suggestions? I have been googling because I know this has been talked about a lot, but what I've found is overkill for what I need (I think). I have a RH8 machine on a private net that has iptables but everything is set to ACCEPT. I need to forward port 162 to another machine. Is there an easy way to do this with iptables without having a full fledged firewall running with a bunch of rules? Maybe there's a better way of doing? I'm open to suggestions. Re: Troubleshoot wu-ftp
Thanks for the chkconfig --list. Dumb, the firewall was enabled. All I can think of is that at some point I had the firewall enabled and disabled it manually without restarting. Since this machine doesn't restart too often, when it did, it ran the firewall again. Not sure. At least everything seems ok now. Ben, Thanks. I have it installed and running (autocutsel &) but I still can't copy and paste from Windows to VNC. Troubleshoot wu-ftp
I have a RH8 machine that I was using for ftp with WU-FTP. I had a system crash last week where one of the disks was fsck'ed. Now for some reason wu-ftp is not running. If I restart xinetd it says it's starts two services in the messages log, but I don't know which ones. Port 21 is not open right now/ Any suggestions on troubleshooting this? Similarly, I can't get an X-session to start either. Using cygwin if I try to start an X session the new window pops up, but I never get a login. This worked before the crash too. Run an app like terminal server
Is it possible to run an application similar to how M$ does it with Terminal server? For example, I run Evolution for all of my mailing lists. I find that I need to do a lot of copying and pasting from my windoze machine. Right now I copy and paste it into Outlook and send the message to Evolution, then copy and paste it from there to the message I'm sending. Right now I look at Evolution through VNC or through an X session using cygwin, but I still can't copy/paste directly. Is there any way to run Evolution like a terminal server app where my windoze clipboard is shared between the windoze machine and the running app? Any other suggestions? OT OpenNMS install on RH9
Sorry for the off topic question, but I've been on the OpenNMS list for several days and seeing very few posts coming through. Plus no responses to my posts. Not sure what the problem is. I'm trying to install Open NMS 1.0.2 on Redhat 9. I downloaded the RPMs, but when I try to install it says that rrtdevel...rpm needs perl (Net::SNMP). Thing is, I've already added that perl module and it seemed to install just fine. Is there a way I can verify that the module is in fact installed? Any other suggestions on getting OpenNMS installed? removing a windoze partition (but it's boot)
Hi. I have a system (RH8) that has the following: (parted) print Disk geometry for /dev/hda: 0.000-38166.679 megabytes Disk label type: msdos MinorStart End Type Filesystem Flags 1 0.031 20002.807 primary ntfsboot 2 20002.808 20104.782 primary ext3 3 20104.783 22018.776 primary linux-swap 4 22018.777 38162.219 extended lba 5 22018.808 38162.219 logical ext3 (parted) I originally set it up as a dual boot for games on Windows. Since I never have time to do that and haven't booted to Windows in a very long time, I would like to get rid of it and make use of the space. Is there any way I can do that without having to reinstall RH? Thanks, James -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

I'm running Redhat 9 on several systems. I just installed a new system for testing some stuff and started having this problem: [EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# rpm --rebuilddb error: db4 error(16) from dbenv->remove: Device or resource busy Well, it started when I was unable to remove an rpm, so I tried rebuilding the rpmdb. I did some searching and apparently there is/was a bugtrap on this, but that it has been closed even though no real fix is available. That could be incorrect information. I tried moving the rpmdd to /tmp and rebuilding it, but I get the same error. I can rebuild the system in question, but I'm concerned about this happening on my others and what to do. Anyone running a helpdesk on Redhat? We're using a commercial product right now (on windoze) that is both expensive and a lot of work to manage. It has it's pluses, but it's getting to be an even bigger pain the longer we stay with it. So I'm interested in an alternative, preferably something on Linux using MySQL, postgresql, etc on the backend. I've searched an found quite a few, both open source and pay for including: Issue-Tracker BestPractical SupportWizard Any have experience with any of these or any others for that matter? In three years we have about 90K tickets, so whatever it is, it would have to handle that kind of load, which I don't think is that big. Any input is appreciated. RH8 System locking up when using CDRW drive
Hi. I have a CDRW drive on RH8. Been working great for quite some time. I usually use the webmin interface(I believe just makes calls to cdrecord) to burn my CDs. I couple weeks ago I tried to burn a CD and the system kept locking up part way through the burn. I assumed it was something with the structure I was trying to burn and didn't have toime to troubleshoot at the time. I had not used it since then and tried to blank a cdrw today with: cdrecord blank=fast dev=0,1,0 Same thing. After 30 seconds or so the monitor goes blank and the CAPS and SCROLL lights on my keyboard start flashing. System is not accessible either on the console or from other machines. I don't see much in the message log around the time of the crash. I believe these are the relevant lines: Aug 8 11:40:04 tweety kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 56316753, scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0 Request Sense 00 00 00 40 00 Aug 8 11:40:34 tweety kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 56317186, scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00 Aug 8 11:45:47 tweety syslogd 1.4.1: restart. RE: named/Bind8 questions
Steve, Sorry, a couple more questions. I've been trying to find complete examples of the named.conf on the net and haven't found any. The man pages don't seem to go into much detail. Not sure how to modify mine. Below is my current named.conf. Does the example you sent go above, below, or replace my current stuff? The view for corporate, can I have it forward any request for pca.com to the corporate DNS server? Also, I have a domain obrien-pifer.com. Would I set up another .hosts file for the internal resolution and specify that on the file line? I can't really create another zone with the same name, right? So, internally www.obrien-pifer.com would resolve to 192.168.1.5 while everywhere else it would resolve to the routable internet address. named/Bind8 questions
1) I have my own DNS server for my domains. I now have a branch office connection to my corporate office. At the office we have another internal domain. I still want to use my own DNS server on my network for my lookups, but need to also resolve machines on the corporate network. The next problem is that the domain that we use at corporate internally is also used on the internet by someone else. So putting the corporate DNS server as a secondary doesn't work, because my dns server goes out to the internet to try and resolve that domain. Then it fails to resolve that host. So, that being said, is there any way for my DNS server to forward requests for the corporate internal domain to the corporate DNS server? I've tried adding the coporate DNS to forward queries to, but for some reason it doesn't save it. Any way to do this? 2) One more. My DNS server is inside my network and my firewall forwards DNS requests to it. If I'm on my internal network it returns my public internet address, which is expected. The problem is my firewall will not let traffic such as http to go out, then and then come back in. Besides adding a second DNS server, is there any way for the DNS server to respond to external requests (through the firewall) one way, and to respond to internal requests another? Thanks, James the more I think about it the more I think adding another DNS server might be the easiest -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
Freeswan Help
HI. I know this is better posted on the freeswan mailing list, but I have been unable to join their list. Not sure what the problem is. Anyway, I'm trying to get a VPN branch office type connection between freeswan and a Nortel Contivity switch. At this point I'm very close. Looks like the session gets started but then I get some errors and it drops. See the errors below. I'm doing shared secret, anyone know what Invalid ID Information means? By the way, I'm running IPCop and I think this is actually SuperFreeswan. I have posted to their list, but it's more of a freeswan issue. Any help is appreciated. What's the best way to resolve RPM dependencies?
I'm trying to install an application, GOPchop, which needs gtk-config. I believe this is part of one of the gtk devel rpms. Every time I try to install one of the devels it fails dependencies. Try to install those and they fail depenecies and so on. All the RPMs I'm trying to install are in the RPMS directory. Is there any way for RPM to automatically figure out which ones are needed and install them as well? Is there a better way to accomplish this? Evolution Copy/Cut/Paste
Obviously this question is probably best asked on the Evolution mailing list, but I know a lot people on this list use Evolution. I use Evolution for all of my mailing list subscriptions and for the most part I really like it. Right now I'm running 1.0.8-11, which I know is a bit old. One thing that really annoys me is the Copy/Cut/Paste functions. It seems that you can only copy and paste when you are in certain fields and at certain times. If I open a message for reading I can't copy the text out of that message to paste into another one, unless I hit reply or forward. Same with the Subject line. I can't copy/cut out of that at all. Is this common for Evolution? Are the newer versions the same way? If I were to upgrade my RPMs running on Redhat 8.0, where is the best place to get the Evolution ones? Yes, in IE 5.5 SP2 I turned on cookie prompting and it does prompt me for a cookie when I make the initial admin login. Then, I try to change something in the config page. When I hit submit it takes me straight to the page for entering the admin password again. I enter it again and it takes me back to the config page, but my change isn't there. Can anyone help with this mailman issue? I search mailman list archive but all the hits were kind of old. I installed mailman, created a list, and I'm trying to use the web interface to configure it. Every time I hid Submit Changes it takes me to the admin login page and the changes are not saved. I'm finding it difficult to search for how to do things since mailman is used in so many places. Plus I don't see a man page for it. Any howto's out there, I can't find one for mailman. Re: RH9 home networking
IMHO you should use a dedicated system for sharing your internet connection. All you need is a pretty low end desktop and you can load any number of prebuilt products, such as Smoothwall or IPCop. There are tons of others too. I use IPCop and had it installed in about 15 minutes the first time on an old Pentium 233 with 128 meg RAM and 340 meg HD. Of course I have some old systems at my disposal, so maybe it's an easier choice for me. Re: Transcode Dependencies [was cdrecord-ProDVD]
Everything works great with dvdrecord except for two things. 1) Is there a way to assign a volume label on the DVD? I don't see anything in the MAN page. 2) My DVD is a Pioneer DVR-105. It's supposed to write at 4x and I use speed equal 4, but it writes at 2. How do I get it to write at 4? Wine on Redhat 9
I know this belongs on the wine mailing list and will go there if needed. Just don't need yet another mailing list right now... I'm sure most of you know what I mean Anyway, I'm trying to install wine-20030508 on my Redhat 9 system. I first tried the RPM but kept seeing people say use the source so you have all the tools and everything gets setup right, etc, etc. When I had the RPM installed when I would try to start wineserver or wine a program it would tell me no such file or directory. I tried both as root and as a user. So I uninstalled the RPM and tried the source file. It won't let me run it as root, so I logged in as a user and ran ./tool/wineinstall. I get the following error: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wine-20030508]$ ./tools/wineinstall WINE Installer v0.74 Running configure... ./configure: line 88: conf2782.sh: No such file or directory ./configure: line 89: conf2782.sh: No such file or directory chmod: failed to get attributes of `conf2782.sh': No such file or directory ./configure: line 201: conf2782.file: No such file or directory ./configure: line 949: config.log: No such file or directory Configure failed, aborting install. Re: Transcode Dependencies [was cdrecord-ProDVD]
Since you've been so forthcoming, let me push my luck (and be a little bit lazy), what would the command be for mkisofs if I just want to burn a data DVD? For example, I have a whole bunch of data I want to archive onto DVDs. So let's say I have: directory/data1 directory/data2 directory/data3 directory/data4 What would the command be to to burn data1 and data2 directories to a DVD? Thanks for all your assistance. Oops, it is already installed. Sorry. Don't suppose there are any GUI front ends for it? That's why I was trying to use xcdroast and cdrecord-ProDVD. Supposedly it supports it, I just couldn't get it to work. On the dvdrecord side, I assume you use mkisofs to create an ISO of the structure you're trying to burn, then use dvdrecord to write the ISO to a DVD. I'll check out the sites you sent earlier about how to use it. Boy I could use some help with this. I can't burn a DVD with xcdroast. Yet it seems like xcdroast does see cdrecord.prodvd (located in /usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin directory) because it lets me enter the key for personal use on the options page. If that file isn't there this part is greyed out. Anyone tell me what I might be missing? So the user would have an account on the linux machine. When they try to login, redhat would look to ldap to check authentication? When you're given the option during the Redhat install to select LDAP and specify an LDAP server, what does that really do? I know what LDAP is, but when you enable it in this fashion, what does it do for Linux? I looked over the LDAP howto, but I'm not sure that was referring to LDAP in the same way. It seemed like it was referring more to running an LDAP server not enabling LDAP support. Is there another howto I should be referring to? According to Onstream's web site there is now some support for Onstream drives on Linux with a driver called osst. They even say it might already be in the kernel. I'm running Redhat 8 with kernel 2.4.18-24.8.0. -How can I tell if I already have the osst driver installed? -I plan on using an Adaptec AHA-2930U2 SCSI card. Anyone know if there are issues with this? -Can anyone recommend a backup software I should start with, assuming I get the drive working? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, I'll visit that site. Is there a seperate mailing list for people who know the clustering stuff? Or are you stuck with using RH support? I'll check the web site you mention for a mailing list as well. We have a copy of AS, but have had a lot of trouble getting it installed on a couple systems. RH8 installs without any problems. Clustering on Redhat 8.0
I'm trying to get information about clustering with Redhat 8.0. I've done some google searches, but not getting as far as I'd like. So I was hoping to ask a couple general questions. Can you use clustering with Redhat 8 or do you need to use Redhat Advanced Server? Is it built into 8 or are there RPMs to install? I found a howto at www.tldp.org on clustering. Wondering if there are either any better ones, or just a better set of instructions. If anyone can point me to some useful information that would be great. Anyone using Linux as a DVR? I came across a site that is an open source DVR project. The main thing I'm looking for is what would be the recommended TV tuner/capture card to run on RH8? Re: red hat 8.0 and vmware 3.0
I finally had a chance to install(upgrade) to VMWare 3.2 on my RH8 machine. It also has patch 25 installed. Unfortunately I still have performance problems when a Windows 98 VM is running, especially when I copy files to the host system through a mapped drive. I don't think it's a memory problem as I have 1Gig, plus this ran fine when I had it on 7.3. Any suggestions? Should I do a complete uninstall and start with a fresh install of 3.2? Re: red hat 8.0 and vmware 3.0
FWIW, I have VMWare 3 running on Redhat 8 with the patch vmware-any-any-update20 installed. The previous post talked about a 19 patch so I assume I have a later release. All the kernel talk didn't make any sense to me, but what I can say is that my RH8 machine performed horribly whenever I ran VMWare, even with patch20 installed. My machine is an Athlon 1.2 with 1gig of RAM. I don't run VMWare on it right now because performance was that bad. If there's a more recent patch or workaround (that I understand... :-) ...) I'd love to try it. I'd be happy to share the patch20 I have if anyone wants to email me directly. Is Squid my solution?
I have a Squid(Proxy) question that hopefully can be easily answered. We currently run a commercial Proxy Server where we pay for each client that uses it. That's not a big deal except that we have a bunch of users (say 200-300) that only connect to a couple web sites to do their job. Instead of continuing to pay client licenses I think I could use Squid (or some other open source proxy server) as their proxy. I've looked at Squid's web site at the FAQ, and based on that, I think I can do it, but before taking this to my boss and proposing it I want to make sure. Can I put up a Redhat machine running Squid and allow all users to hit only a couple web sites? (I say all users because if they only go to these couple sites it would probably be easier to just let anyone connect if they want to use it as their proxy, hopefully without even authenticating) Is there another product besides Squid I should consider? With iptables loaded xterm takes 15 seconds to load, while it load immediately with iptables either unloaded or the rules flushed. Hi Bret. Yes that is the same thread. Slowness when doing -L just seems to be a symptom of the same problem. Anyone else have any information that might help? Re: iptables and performance issues
Anyone else have anything to add to this or can anyone give more detail on how this is a DNS issue? I have a very similar problem as the original poster. I have two Redhat 8.0 machines, one has this same problem while the other one does not. Both have the same DNS settings, ie they hit the same DNS server. For example if I load iptables, both running the same script, one machine immediately has problems with just about everything: ssh, webmin, xterm, etc, everything is sluggish. The other machine responds fine. I've never found a solution to this and could only turn off iptables on the one having the problem. (not directly connected to the net, so not a big deal really.) But I would like to know what is causing the problem. Thanks, James On Fri, 2002-12-20 at 13:02, lester lasad wrote: > > Thanks for the responses. RE: Help with RH 8.0 and VNC
This might work for you, although may not be the best answer. Once you connect to a user VNC session open an xterm window (based on your description I'm not sure you'll be able to) and run switchdesk. Switch it to what you want to use and then as root restart vncserver or that vncserver session. Sounds like a similar problem I had earlier today. Hopefully I didn't misunderstand the problem. Dual Boot Compaq Proliant
I'm trying to install a dual boot Windoze 2000 Server/Redhat 8.0 on a Proliant 1600. In the past when I've installed Linux on Compaq servers I always put Grub on the 1st sector of the boot drive because Compaq uses the MBR for getting to it's utilities. In this case I'm trying to dual boot so I installed Windoze first so the the Redhat install sees it, etc, etc. Problem is that I chose the 1st boot sector, but that turns out to be on the second disk, not the first, so it goes right to Windoze. Anyone know how I can do this? Install Windoze and and then RH8 and still be able to access Compaq's utilities using the F10 key. Do I have to install RH8 in the MBR and then mess with adding Compaq's utils to Grubs menu? (tried that in the past following Compaq's web site, but I wasn't successful) Any suggestions are appreciated. When it "freezes" the video stays exactly where it's at and no mouse or keyboard input works. Console screen is locked up/frozen. Can't ping or connect to any services. I believe the NIC is an Intel chipset(builtin). We then have to power it off. Troubleshooting lockups....
We have Redhat 8.0 installed on a Compaq G2 DL360 Dual 1.4ghz/133mhz, 512 cache, 1280MB RAM, Smart Array 5i controller. The problem is it locks up every so often. There's nothing significant in /var/log/messages. Anyone having any problems with these systems? Any suggestions on figuring out what is causing the problem? We haven't done much because we're not really sure what to do in this situation. No errors, no signs, all of the sudden, just stops It has done this both with X windows running and with it not running. Right now we're running top to see if it gives us any indications when it does lockup. Any suggestions are appreciated. SNMP Trap Collection & Deduplication
I plan on trying out some network management type software on Redhat 8.0. I'm looking at playing around with OpenNMS, Nagios, and possibly Big Brother. One thing I'm looking for is deduplication of snmp traps, something like the commercial Micromuse Netcool product can do. If it receives a trap that is the same as one it already has, it increases a count or tally instead of looking at it as an additional trap. Anyone know of any open source software that can do this? It's my understanding that these products don't collect the traps themselves, but rather they somehow use Redhat's trapd service, but either way, I'm trying to find something that deduplicates or recognizes multiple alerts for the same problem and somehow groups them so actions aren't taken multiple times. I don't know of a better place this post this question. If there is please let me know. RE: GUI for Firewall admin
Jose, What Redhat version are you running FWbuilder on? I'm trying to install it on 8.0 and it a pain the *ss. I'm not a Linux expert and it's driving me nuts with all the dependencies. Every time I try and install one of the packages it needs it comes and tells me I have to install a different package first. Anyone else have this running on 8? Maybe I'm making this harder than it needs to be. I have looked at their install docs on their website, which is what led me to the packages I have right now. I've installed all the packages I think I need, but it's still failing on libgdkmm-1.2.so.1 and libgtkmm-1.2.so.1. Well, if you mean both drives as in the hard drive and the CDRW, no. I have 40gig and 100gig ATA100 drives on the primary controller. I have a cdrw and a 45x CDROM on the secondary. Damn, hard drive failure will suck. Looks like the errors are all on hda. Should I do this with Lokkit?
In the past I've used "setup" and selected "Firewall configuration" for setting up my firewall (I assume this runs lokkit, at least they look the same). I now have a Redhat 8 machine and as I understand it uses iptables now by default. I'm looking for opinions. I have a linux box on the internet and I want to allow some services, like SSH, SMTP, and WWW, and I also need some ports open for a specialized app, say 11001-11020. I can do this with lokkit, but I have to list each of those extra ports individually. If I ever want to add a port to it, I have to enter it all over again. I've tried doing 11001:11020 in the lokkit but that doesn't seem to work. 1) Can you specify a range of ports with lokkit? 2) Is there another config tool I should be using besides Lokkit? 3) Should I be using a custom firewall script for doing this? 4) Are the built in firewall tools enough, or should I add something like FireStarter or one of the other firewall tools? Suggestions are appreciated. (If I've worded something incorrectly or incompletely please have mercy) Thanks. mailertable being ignored - Phase II
We reinstalled the server now using Redhat 8, which is what I ran my test servers on. Sendmail(8.12.5-7) has the following settings: /etc/mail/relay-domains has one line: mydomain.com /etc/mail/mailertable has one line: .mydomain.com esmtp:[192.168.1.5] /etc/mail/local-host-names has no entries I ran "make" while in /etc/mail and it returned me to a prompt so I thin kit ran ok. I restarted Sendmail. The damn thing is still relaying the mail to the mail server at the MX record instead of forwarding it directly to the server specified in the mailertable. What am I missing? File Permissions and File Managers with Redhat 8
I've upgraded one of my PC's to Redhat 8 and so far like it a lot, although I'm not thrilled with Konquerer as my File Manager.(obviously running KDE) Can anyone suggest a better one? Also, I have a second disk mounted as /disk2. How can I give myself complete access to everything under /disk2 so I can read and write to this drive at will when logged in as myself or as root? Upgrading from 7.3 to 8.0
I have a system with an Athlon 1.2Ghz, 1 Gig of Ram, 40 Gig IDE as the Master, and a 100 Gig IDE as the Slave. Right now I have RH7.3 installed and the 100 Gig drive mounted as disk2. I would like to do two things, install a small Windows partition (for games) and then install RH8.0. One of my concerns is that I'm running Evolution and connect to several mailing lists, including this one. I'm thinking of blowing away the 40 gig drive and then installing a small Windows 2000 partition. Then install Redhat 8.0 on the rest of the drive. My questions are these: 1) What's the best way to copy the file system from the 40 gig drive to the 100 gig drive? That way when I install 8.0 I can get to all my old files in case I need something? Would the simple cp command be the easiest thing here? 2) Assuming I don't screw up and blow away the data/partition on the 100 Gig Drive, will the Redhat 8 install see it and let me mount it again as disk2? 3) Any suggestions on getting my current Evolution mail migrated to the new installation assuming I have it all backed up? (via question 1) Any suggestions are appreciated.
