bonding 2 DSL lines.
I can't find an application that will allow me to equalize traffic across two DSL lines such as this router does. http://www.nexland.com/turbo.cfm I understand why it's tricky and it wouldn't work with the normal networking stack. But I'm surprised that nobody has some kernel module or that can handle it. The problem is that EQL only works with point to point connections, the default route needs to be the EQL device, which means both ethernet devices don't have default routes, so they can't get out of their respective subnets. I don't expect to find magic, but with the proper kernel module, I'd assume that you could configure the real interfaces so they are handled where they are seperate and both can be configured with default routes, but not visible to the system and not in the route table etc., then create the virtual shared interface that looks like a normal linux interface, that the system uses just like any ethernet interface. Re: Finding version and patch info for kernel modules
Your right, I remembered the kernel srpm after I posted, before I posted I had only considered the kernel-source rpm and web pages. And there is nothing particular to the airo module that redhat has done. I guess it's off to the kernel.org lists to find out which snapshot of airo is in 2.4.20 and if they patched it. Re: up2date
If you are the type of person who wants free updates and don't care what you use then you should look into apt. It has things that are better and things that are worse than RHN. It's worth evaluating to see which suits you better. FreshRPMS has the apt package in RPM and a list of repositories. http://apt.freshrpms.net My favorite thing is that I can build my own RPMS and host my own repository for it. You need RHN proxy server to do that with RHN $$$. The big downside is there is no web interface like RHN it's all managed from the clients. Repeating after Ed: The Red Hat Linux 9 distribution is distributable under the GNU Public License. I never questioned that. My post was more so looking at positive/negative aspects of p2p distribution of shrike. Not as much the fact that non RHN members are getting it. Ya did see this right? http://www.redhat.com/training/rhce/rhce_faq.html For how long will my RHCE certification be considered current? The validity period for all RHCEs and RHCTs is now officially pegged to the release of the Enterprise product commercially available at the time certification was earned, and certification shall be current until after one (1) major release of the Enterprise product. All RHCEs earned on Red Hat Linux 7.3 or prior will be considered current until the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES/WS 4. All RHCEs and RHCTs earned on Red Hat Linux 8.0 or 9 will remain current until the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. Validity and current status of an RHCE certificate will continue to be verified at Certification Central. Also redhat hasn't unlisted any version certs a 5.2 RHCE is still a valid RHCE, but redhat can't vouch that he should know stuff on 8.0. Re: Red Hat Trainings: RH401
I was in the first RH401 course that they offered to the public, and being the first there were some rough edges in the courseware and the labs. Most of which should be polished by now. For the most part it was good, the part on failover and load balancing seemed to be targeted for people with very little exposure to it. I run a piranha cluster and didn't learn anything new in the lesson about piranha, (however I did talking with other students as you may expect). The labs for the HA stuff builds upon itself until you have a system like this: 1 Fibrechannel storage array hooked up to 2 NFS servers using Cluster Manager to make the NFS shares HA 2 Webservers getting data from the HA NFS share 2 Piranha directors Load balancing the web servers. The beginning of the class also has good information about how to manage thousands of machines while keeping your sanity. using CVS for keeping versions of config files, writing scripts to distribute the files, and packaging the scripts in RPM's that can be distributed with the RHN. There is a chapter on performance tuning 101. The part about that class that I didn't like is when we were using Red Hat Network Proxy Server/Satellite Server to supply custom channels to distribute our own RPMS. It was a huge sales pitch, and one of those things where the pricing is an enigma, we still didn't get a clear price from Red Hat before we left on Thursday. Overall it was a good class, but watch out for the sales pitch. Configuring 2 pcmcia net cards when only using 1 at a time.
I have a laptop, a wired network card that takes up both pcmcia slots and a wireless network card. I'm trying to figure out how to set these up as seamlessly as possible. I can't have them both installed at the same time because they won't fit, and when I take one out and put in the other, linux has an idenity crisis. I'm setting this up using the RH8 network control panel which may be part of my problem. I'm trying to use this because I want to set up different network profiles. The problem is that it always thinks that the card that is installed is supposed to be eth0. but the two cards use different kernel modules and the entry in /etc/modules.conf says that eth0 uses the module for whatever card I have installed last. Can I modify the configuration so it will know to load the proper kernel module and not have one hard coded into modules.conf? Re: RH AS subscription license
AFAIK, One of the reasons they don't distribute ISO's of AS online is there are some packages that they can't. IBM's JRE is one example. I'm sure the inconvience factor is another valid reason as well. When you buy one copy of AS with a 1 year service contract you also get 1 redhat network entitlement for the AS channel. which is the only way you can get binary updates. The software is almost all GPL (JRE and a few others are the exceptions) so if you can borrow the cd's from a friend and use it and be perfectly legal. But there won't be any way to get binary updates, you will have to compile all the SRPMS. Which makes it suitably inconvenient. Now you could have one system download all the binary updates and distribute them to all the other systems, Red Hat won't have much of a problem with that. but you will only have support on one. The people AS are targeted for are people who would already have extensive support contracts on the server anyway if it were Solaris, HP-UX or AIX. Detecting when Rsync changes a file
I'm trying to put together a shell script the detects when rsync changes a file. I'd prefer not to have to store meta data in files, so I'm looking at using the atime and the mtime of the file and the -N file test operator in bash which returns true if the mtime == the atime for the file. The problem I'm having is that rsync is updating the mtime even when it doesn't change the file. so -N is returning true every time. My plan was to run rsync without the -t flag so when it creates or updates a file the atime == the mtime, then check that with -N and then touch -a the file to update the atime so it's ignored untill it's updated again. But since rsync is updating the mtime every run. that's not going to work. The other option is to use the -t flag in rsync except that the mtime will now be the mtime of the original file. I don't know how using that would be useful without storing it as meta data and comparing the mtime to it. Something I'd prefer not to do. Any other ideas would be appreciated, I hope I'm missing something simple. -- Jeff Bearer, RHCE Webmaster, PittsburghLIVE.com Winner 2002 Eppy Award, Best U.S. Newspaper Website -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Lucent (win/lin)modem Drivers with RH8
Hello, Tonight I tried to install the lucent drivers for the modem in my laptop. in the past I've used this before and have had no problem. But now when I try to compile the module it complains that the source code is not compatible with GCC 3. I can't figure out how that is supposed to work short of compiling the kernel with gcc 2.95 but then wouldn't glibc and everything else also need to be compiled with gcc 2.95? Re: LDAP failover recovery
You should ask yourself this question: You don't expect your master LDAP server to fail frequently, if you do then you better examine other parts of you deployment. On the rare occasions that the LDAP server fails, the outages will usually be short in duration. Do you really need to allow write access to the Directory for these times the master is down? For most LDAP deployments I would think that it's not worth the investment in working out this reverse replication thing. Re: Red Hat Network ???
Busines point of view. $60, about 2 hours of sysadmins time. Now compare the time of keeping a server updated with and without RHN. You will see a tremendous cost savings. Plus there is absolutely no way I'd want to keep 25 servers with different configerations updated manually, I'd need an assistant and then that's all we would be doing. I've just downloaded APT for RPM for my home server, it's nice, I might stick with that for non business servers. Re: to newcomers: please try to solve the problem yourself beforeasking
One thing that might help is if Red Hat's mailing list archive search wasn't so hard to use, the search results listed as file names is horrible. Simply displaying the subject would improve the usability I'd estimate 500%. I mean how useful is this: --- Search Results For: "search" 4367 matchesResult pages:1 2 3 4 5 6Next page 1. redhat-list/date452.html 2. redhat-list/date451.html 3. redhat-list/msg07111.html 4. redhat-list/thread146.html 5. redhat-list/msg27100.html etc. I really do feel like reading 4367 files to find the post I'm looking for. I've tried Google, it doesn't return mailing list entries for Red Hat as will as other mailing lists I search this way. when you search 'site:redhat.com redhat 8.0 mp3' for example. Does anyone have a better way of searching the list archive online? I sometimes find my self asking questions that I know have been answered on the list, simply because they are such a pain to find. Will Postfix help or can I tweak Sendmail?
I'm using Mailman to manage several Newsletters, the subscribers can't submit, they just receive mail. One of the lists is up to nearly 2000 users and Sendmail takes forever to send the mail. The last e-mail took 20 hours to complete, and one was sent last night, in 8 hours only 100-200 mails were sent, currently I forced a mail queue run (sendmail -v -q) and it's moving faster, but it's still slow, sent about 400 e-mail's in the past hour. My first question is does Sendmail always deliver the mail 1 connection at a time, or is that only because I ran it by hand? I figure multi threaded queue processing would help the speed a lot. Are there any easy tweaks to make with Sendmail? Second would I benefit from switching to Postfix? How involved is switching MTA's? Re: kickstart install using nfs
Your second thought is the way you will want to go, the README file on each cd tells you the specifics. You can also put the ISO files in a NFS directory and that is supposed to work also, I read that somewhere. I use the directory method over the ISO method because it's easier to get to the individual RPM files if I need them when I'm not installing. And obviously you will need to use the bootnet.img with your kickstart file. Here are the things I dislike or have had problems with in the past day of running 8.0 as a workstation. - No menu editor for Gnome2, you are stuck with their poorly organized (for me) menus. It uses gnome-vfs, and after 3 hours of research I still don't understand how to modify the menus. - No MP3 support, annoying, but Freshrpms.net has a package with the mp3 libraries for xmms. - Configuring your palm to sync is not possible with the programs, documentation supplied with the distro. There is no menu, program to get to the conduit configuration screen, You have to run: gpilotd-control-applet --cap-id=1 to get the screen, but the red hat docs make no mention of it. I can't answer your problem, just that I've used that drive with Amanda with no problems. http://www.amanda.org/ Amanda has settings for the drive/media, you will find yours listed in their FAQ-O-matic. The training class that includes the test, RH300. It does an excellent job preparing you for the exam. I knew most of the stuff, but it clued me in on a few of the strange questions on the written test that I never encountered in my own experience. LDAP Authentication with MD5 Passwords
I have an LDAP server setup and I'm attempting to get a client to authenticate to it. If the user has a clear password he can login, but if I encrypt the password with MD5 it doesn't work any longer. I've tried complex detailed setup from docs online, but I wasn't any more successful than the simple setup that I reverted to so there are less things to explain. I've run authconfig and setup the LDAP settings and selected to use MD5 and shadow passwords. I checked in /etc/ldap.conf it says at the end of the file: pam_password md5 I set the encrypted password with the GQ LDAP browser as a md5 password. When I try to login in /var/log/messages I get an invalid credential error. I saw on this site http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/ldap-auth.php " The pam_password must be set to md5 (it uses the crypt(3) system, which will use the unix MD5 hash instead of the built-in MD5 which is incompatible)." Does that mean that GQ makes incompatible hashes for authentication? Or does it say that with "pam_password" that authentication uses built-in MD5? I can't tell which direction that statement is going. Even if the system is configured to use MD5 passwords, and my password is an incompatible hash, How come plain text passwords work? I think I missed a configuration and the system is not trying to use MD5 passwords. I just need pointed in the right direction. -- Jeff Bearer, RHCE Webmaster, PittsburghLIVE.com 2002 EPpy Award Winner, Best Newspaper Website -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
nfs exporting ncpfs mounted volumes
I'm attempting to export a ncpfs (novell) mounted file system. in the ncpmount man page is says that mountd and nfsd must be restarted with --re-export. The nfs packages that come with Red Hat, don't have the --re-export option. I've looked in the documentation, SRPM, and at nfs.sourceforge.net and have found nothing mentioning --re-export. I did find on a debian mailing list that people were mentioning the option with their nfs server, I guess they use different software? http://lists.debian.org/debian-testing/2001/debian-testing-200104/msg00045.html Does anyone have some insight why this option seems to be missing from Red Hat's NFS server, or how to get this to work? When I try to mount the nfs exported volume I get this error on the nfs server: Sep 6 14:38:30 server rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from 10.1.1.1:834 for /mnt/volume (/mnt/volume) Sep 6 14:38:30 server rpc.mountd: getfh failed: Operation not permitted The volume is set up wide open in exports, I get the same error from localhost, and I can mount other volumes no problem. -- Jeff Bearer, RHCE Webmaster, PittsburghLIVE.com 2002 EPpy Award Winner, Best Newspaper Website -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
Using a cellphone as a modem with Linux
There is little around about trying to get Linux to use a cell phone as a modem, so I figured I'll post my experience so it will be documented for others. It works, piece of cake. I used the Kyocera 2035a and the serial data cable sold by kyocera. It behaves like any normal modem. Set it up as you would any modem and you are good to go, at a blazing 14.4 kbps. I know it seems pointless posting just to say that something works as advertized, but for people looking to buy the cable/phone etc. it should give them peice of mind. -- Jeff Bearer, RHCE Webmaster, PittsburghLIVE.com 2002 EPpy Award Winner, Best Newspaper Website -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=unsubscribe https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Re: iso install problem
I don't think you can mount iso images for an install on the same machine, now if the iso's are in a different linux machine you can mount those images, copy the files to the hard disk, and nfs share those files, that's the way I setup network installs when I have iso files. If you mounted the iso and nfs shared it I'd expect you to have problems when it's time for disk2, and 3. Maybe boot the pc into rh rescue mode, mount and extract the files from the iso's and then use a hard disk install. I guess that depends on what filesystems are currently on your disk. Re: Graphical Mode boot up
I'm not sure what's causing the error, but if you simply are booting to text login (run level 3) and want to change it to graphical login (run level 5) there are two ways. The roundabout easy way is to run Xconfigurator and when it asks if you want to boot to graphical mode hit yes. The more direct way to do it is to edit /etc/inittab and change. id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault: On Tue, 2002-07-16 at 18:41, Gorman, Michael wrote: > I am receiving the following error when trying to start the x server. > "execeve failed for /etc/X11/X" > > > How do I boot into the Graphical Mode? > > Thank you. -- Jeff Bearer, RHCE Webmaster, PittsburghLIVE.com 2002 EPpy Award Winner, Best Newspaper Website ___ Redhat-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list

Re: Can't get Telnet Root Access on a new Linux Dell server
Dan, your problem with ssh may be a simple as having to choose ssh version 2 in the putty options. putty defaults to ssh1 and your server is most likely only accepting ssh2. I use both, How can this be you say? I use a script, that I got of this very list. What is the best option for LVS?
I'm looking into setting up a cluster with Linux Virtual Server, What is the best option? It looks like in order to get software from Red hat to do it I'll have to run 6.2 and install piranha. Or buy Red Hat Advanced Server. I can install it myself using the ipvs kernel patch and the ipvsadm utility from linuxvirtualserver.com and I think that will run fine on 7.2 There looks like there are other Piranha type programs out there but ultramonkey looks like it will only run on RH 6.2. Of these three options the second one sounds the best, but I'm mainly asking to see if there is another option that I haven't come across yet.
