XCDROAST roasted me

2003-06-16 Thread Jerry Human
Hello Everyone:

I have successively copied a data CD with XCDROAST on RH 9.0, sort of.
After burning and closing the burn prog and opening both CD's in
seperate windows to compare the contents I noticed that the root dir of
the burned CD had everything the original had, all the files and sub
dirs. BUT all the sub dirs were empty. Why, what did I do wrong, what
can I do to get the sub dirs and files to copy also?
Thanks.

RHN or NRH

2003-06-11 Thread Jerry Human
Hello Everyone:

I have finally installed RH9. WOW, it sure works great!
However, I have a question regarding the update service. After the
initial 3 CD install, since I have an 'always on' DSL connection to the
internet, it automatically asked if I wanted to check for updates and I
selected yes. Upon conclusion of the downloads and installs, it took me
to the activation site. The first text box requested the product ID. I
downloaded the .iso files so I don't have a 'product ID card in the
box.' What do I enter into the product ID text box to activate my account?

Thanks.

HI:

I have a DFI WT70-EC mobo and the bios had already been upgraded to the
latest version before I installed the 120 gig WD drive. Besides, to
remove Ontrack I'd have to format the drive and lose everything. Not
desirable.

Thanks.

Re: Invisible Partitions

No, its a primary partition. It hasn't got a file system yet. It was
created by Ontrack because the 120 gig drive was only 60 gig without it.
I left the fourth partion raw so I could install Linux after I got
Windows installed.

Thanks.

Setting up RH + Symbol scanners + Sato printers

2002-05-13 Thread Jerry Human

Hello:

I'm between a big rock and a real hard place. The company I work for as
a Systems Tech. is running numerous scan PC's with Windows98. They are
currently buying and setting up a Sun server to connect the 3 little
plants we have. Once that is completed (approx. 2 months) we'll begin
setting up the scan systems to run on RH. I am known as the only one
that has any Linux experience so the project was just dropped in my lap.

Therefore, I NEED HELP!!!

The basic procedure is an order is placed and forwarded to the
warehouse. Then a person will pull the order and scan each part as it's
pulled and packed for that order and then forwarded to shipping. The
scanning is accomplished with either a 1D or 2D Symbol scan gun and the
data is broadcast via the wireless network to a PC which checks the
order and verifies the correct part pulled and prints a summary report
for billing and a label for shipping. I have to setup the PC's on the
wireless network.

I have already started downloading Symbol software for Linux but that
only covers the data exchange from the PC to the scan gun (actually a
data terminal) and data back to the PC. What I need help with is the
programs that accepts the data and generate the report and automatically

prints the label on a Sato thermal printer.

Does anyone know of or have a similar setup running on Linux that can
give me some direction? I don't know of any programs that are capable of

doing this.

Thanks.

Learning Linux

2001-12-12 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Good People:

I've just found out that the company I work for is going to install a
Sun network server next year. I am currently a Systems Tech maintaining
several Winblows networks in each plant and a Linux newbie. I have RH
7.1 installed at home and I'm slowly learning both command line and
graphical setups. Because of the above news I want to kick my *nix
learning into high gear. I don't think I will have time to complete a
class before having to assist in the building/configuration/implementing
the new system and I am the only one of 4 techs that has any *nix
experience. What would all you experts recommend I do to learn more
besides taking classes at the local community college? Unfortunately, to
make sure I wouldn't make a bunch of dumb mistakes in the new
environment, I want to start at "square one." What web sites, books or
other resources would you recommend?

Thank you.

Network Everywhere or Netgear nic?

2001-05-05 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Folks:

I have ADSL in Windows 95 on a Kingston nic. Apparently the Kingston

Kingston nic

2001-05-02 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Good People:

Does anyone have a Kingston KNE110TX nic working in RH 7.0? Do you have
any suggestions that would help me access it in RH 7.0?

This nic was supplied with my DSL modem and works good in Windows. I am
attempting to get DSL working in RH 7.0 and the problem seems to stem
from accessing this nic. I have noticed that this nic also shares the
same network address and irq as the network nic. The only error I get
when trying to establish a DSL connection is TIMEOUT when I run
dsl-start. This is after booting Windows and establishing a DSL
connection to verify that DSL and the modem are working correctly and
rebooting to RH to attempt to establish a DSL connection.

I have found a driver compatible to RH 6.2 but when attempting to
install the .rpm, it resulted in several conflicts and errors.

Once the nic access problem is resolved, I think I can get DSL working
in RH since everything else seems to be installed and working correctly.
Once I get DSL working, I can finally upgrade the generic RH install.

Thanks.

Must be nice! Actually, I only paid about $12.00 for mine new and it is a hub
only and didn't include any software. A Linksys model # EFAH08W that seems to
work ok but I'm having trouble getting the network to 'see' the other box. Once
I get the two-box network running dependably I will add a gateway box to handle
DSL/ firewall/routing and connect it thru the hub and then add other boxes.

Thanks for the input, I'm a little more confident about the Linksys hardware.

Re: umount /dev/cdrom

Hi Stu:

Where is the /dev/cdrom mounted? The default is usually /mnt/cdrom. I
assume you're using X since you "haven't got a terminal open." If so,
see if you have the file manager looking at that dir or some other
program that has used it and still accessing it and terminate that
connection. Once all connections to the mounted dir have been eliminated
the drive can be unmounted normally.

Thanks.

Bummer, all I have right now is a hub and the nic's for all my boxes. Could this

Are you saying that Samba has to go on the box connected to the internet?
Wouldn't that 'weaken' security a little? I was thinking I could put Samba on
one of the networked RH boxes and serve the Windows box from there.

Re: Networked DSL

2001-04-16 Thread Jerry Human

Brad Bonkoski wrote:

> Hello Jerry.. (a few questions) do you only have one DSL?

Yes, only one, but I think someone on this list said if the modem is connected
to a nic then it could be shared with any OS, including Linux, over the
network. That's why I posted the question, to make sure I have the facts
straight before I try to set it up. Since Linux does every thing needed and has
better security, I want to use it for the box to the internet. Then I could
connect the hub directly to the RH boxes and use Samba to the Windows box.
What I have in mind is:

 [i]--[1]--[h]--[n]

Where [i] is the internet.

Where [1] is a linux box with two nic's, one for the DSL and to the network.
This box will also have the firewall on it and serve as router so that
(theoretically) I could open a browser on more than one box and download on one
while surfing on another.

Actually, if you had NT, you could do IP-forwarding.

Networked DSL

2001-04-16 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Gentlemen:

I finally got DSL working properly. What I have now is a Westell
WireSpeed external modem that connects to a nic and it works great!
Currently I have two nic's in the Windows box, one for the DSL and one
to the hub for the network. What I want to do is check with you learned
people about the right way to set it up on the network to have good
security and share it with the RH and Windows boxes.

I think I need to setup an RH box (possibly a 486) as a firewall and
router with a nic connected to the hub, then install the DSL on a second
nic in the same box. That way, the DSL access and firewall are on the
same box and any "questionable traffic" doesn't reach the network but at
the same time, I can access the web from either RH or Windows via the
network hub. Does this sound correct?

Thanks.

Hi Moke Tsing:

I've got the same cards and I found the driver already precompiled for you in
/lib/modules in RH 7.0. It was installed automatically with several others when
you installed network support.

Yes, I know. I haven't been able to find any and I've been looking for several days.
However,
I've heard that anything is possible with Linux. Then I received:

One of the more prevalent USB ADSL modems being shipped today is the SpeedStream 4060.
This

Took me about 3 weeks.

At any rate, good luck.

Ok, I have a WD 1.2 gig and a WD 2.5 gig that I can use in the 486. I'd like to ask
about the
size estimate. Is there additional software I need other than RH 7.0? I have just
installed
a RH 7.0 workstation with all the servers except Apache and internet servers and the

only used ~850 meg including X and Gnome. If RH is all I need then the one gig would
do.

Ok, I think I've got this straight. I need another box. I have an unused 486DX50 VLB
with a nic and 32 meg ram, would that do for a firewall/router as you suggested? I
doesn't have USB but I heard that USB add-on cards are available. Which means I would
plug the DSL modem into a USB (since I don't have an ethernet modem) card on the 486
and
set it up as a firewall/router and plug it into the hub (since I don't have a switch,
maybe later) on the network. Sort of a sacrificial box, huh. If anything gets toasted,
it's just the firewall/router and not the network. Sounds like a good place for a Raid
setup. Is this correct? Would the 486 slow down the internet connection? How big would
the hard drive need to be? Should I increase the ram?

Thank you.

Yes, and you're doing a great job maintaining it. It's very easy to read and follow.
I've even printed part of it (sections 3, 4 and 5) for reference when not online. I am
curious why you didn't mention anything about Southern Bell or Ameritech or such in
the appendix section "8.5. Linux Friendly DSL ISPs" since they supply most of the hard
wire in the eastern states and DSL? They readily admit to being Linux compatible but,
in the same breath, don't support Linux.

You seem to favor heavily the Alcatel brand. Is Alcatel the only one that uses ATM or
is that something I need to work with? I am on a very tight budget and can't purchase
hardware whenever I need. I have checked places like uBid, Pricewatch and several
manufacturer sites. I have yet to find an ethernet only external modem that works on
an Ameritech account. Can you suggest a few cheap ones? Where can I find them?

Sounds like we're talking security here. I intend to setup ipchains on RH 7.0 for
whichever I end up using. As you can probably tell, I am new to networking and DSL
and security. I've asked for suggestions about how to set this up but didn't
really get any responses. Can you tell me the correct way to setup the
DSL/network? Right now I'm trying to establish a network with two Linux/Windows
boxes on a hub so I can share printers and modems. One box has a good 56k modem
that is Linux compatible but I do most of my surfing from the other box since it
is newer and faster. Once established, I will add the other boxes and DSL.

I already have an ADSL account with Ameritech. About a month ago, someone broke in
and stole the Windows box with DSL on it, leaving all my Linux boxes untouched.
Since then, I've been trying to get hardware and software together to get back on
DSL in Linux, so far, no joy. :-(( From what you are saying, it seems like I
should sell the modem I have (SpeedStream 4060 recommended by Ameritech) and get a
DSL modem/router combo unit, since I found several of those. I haven't found any
'ethernet-only' external modems yet.

I am new to all of this. I've been reading a lot of HOWTOS but I'm not sure what
to do or what to do first. Any guidance you can offer would be greatly
appreciated.

So, I guess what you're saying is for me to have any hope of getting ADSL
to work in RH 7.0, I'll have to upgrade the kernel to 2.4 first? I was
hoping to get DSL working before doing anything like that. I have a stock

Are you saying that ADSL modems are available to connect to a hub? That is
what I would have prefered but all I could find at the time were routers
and USB. I do have a small network that I want to share DSL with all the
boxes. So what do you suggest I do?

USB ADSL modem

Hello Good People:

I have finally received my new DSL modem but I'm having problems getting
it to work in RH 7.0. First of all, it is a USB modem and since I don't
have anything else that uses USB, I can't verify that it's working.
Second, the ADSL HOWTO is basically about wiring and barely mentions
software setup. I'm not sure what is needed or where to find it. I
haven't found a manpage or HOWTO for PPPoE either.

Could some of you good people help me, please?

Re: ADSL & RH 7 Expanded

2001-03-14 Thread Jerry Human

Gentlemen:

I specifically refer to those Gentlemen that responded to my query:

Mike Burger
Hal Burgiss
Thierry Itty
Gustav Schaffter
John Aldrich
Rodney Fulk

Thank you all for your informative replies. Because of your discussion
of my query I am beginning to realize the extent of my naivety
concerning DSL and networks. I have learned a lot from your discussion.

I am apparently looking for a modem. Since the computer that accessed
DSL was stolen, the TI ADSL NETWORK adapter (modem?) went with it. I am
still paying for DSL service with no means to access it. I want to get
back "on".

That said, where can I get an economical DSL modem? Checking
Pricewatch/Modems results in too many 56k modems and no DSL modems.
Checking Pricewatch/networking results in DSL routers, all requiring DSL
modems but not offering any modems. Doing a 'net search for DSL modems
results in a miriad of discussions of DSL but no modem sales. Contacting
Ameritech (my provider) results in a lot of BS about not supporting
Linux and refusal to sell me a $350 external modem. Doing all this on a
28.8 connection is painful.

Then there is the statement made by John Aldrich:

> Yeah. OTOH, the Netgear, in combination with an external
> DSL modem would be a wonderful combo. ;-)
> John

>From what I've gleaned during all my DSL searching, John, you are
absolutely correct. However, your statement suggests to me that you may
be speaking from the Windows world where every new task requires a new
major purchase. I thought that Linux could do most tasks without the
additional purchases but maybe a minimal adapter purchase.

Reinforcing this thought is reflected by Hal Burgiss:

Hal Burgiss wrote:
>
> Being a Linux list, we might mention how well Linux performs as
> router, gateway, firewall, and DHCP server, http server, mail server,
> ftp server ;) And it does PPPoE (choose your poison). Infinitely
> configurable, and reasonably priced to boot.

That statement is in essence one of the major reasons I am attempting to
learn and use Linux. Doesn't that statement ultimatly mean I don't need
all the expensive hardware required for a comparable Windows setup?

Being a Linux/network/DSL newbie, I'm not sure. I don't know what I
need. I have all Linux boxes, 10/100 NICs, cat 5 cables and an 8 port
10/100 hub ready to build a network. The only thing lacking is the
hardware to connect to DSL.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was planning to use an old 486DX50
machine for DSL/gateway/firewall/router connected to the hub that
connected the Linux boxes. I was also thinking of eventually getting The
NIC (www.thinknic.com) to serve that purpose since it is already an
economical Linux box.

Obviously I'm missing something. Would you knowledgeable gentlemen be
kind enough to help me?

I hope I haven't offended anyone with this lengthy explanation and
request for help, I'm mearly attempting to learn through discussion.

Thank you.

Thanks, Neil. I did a quick "whereis x11amp" in the console and came up
empty.:-(But at least, I now have a direction to work. I had
forgotten about realplayer, I'll probably have to D/L it. For now
though, thanks to Ed Alexander, I can listen to CD's while I work on the
streaming problem.

Sorry to hear you can't "hear recognisable sound" on your box. Is it a
hardware or software problem?

Thanks, again.

That's what I thought, that's why I tried several times before doing
anything else. The 6.2 and 7.0 installers are practically identical and
I've installed 6.2 several times in various locations without running
into this problem.

I may have mistated but the first time through I clicked the entry box
and hit the "/" on the keyboard. On subsequent tries ( 6 or 8) I tried
both the keyboard and pull down menues.

Actually, (a) with 192 meg of ram on a workstation I shouldn't need
swap, (b) RH isn't supposed to require swap, (C) a portion of the disk
was unused and could have been used for swap but the installer didn't
prompt for anything. It just wouldn't go any further.

What else could it be?

RH 7.0 install problem

2001-03-07 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Everyone:

I have just installed RH 7.0 (Respin) and I had a problem getting past
DiskDruid. I used fdisk to set a Linux partiton on hdb3 and selected it
for the mount point. However, once this was done (I tried several times)
the "NEXT" button would not work. "Manually Partition with Fdisk" and
"Manually Partition with DiskDruid" were both tried with no success.
Finally, "Auto install" was selected and it did install. BUT, the
install started at hda4 {620 meg} (which was RH 6.2 for maintanence when
I have problems with the main install) and continued on hdb1 {2 gig}
which was setup on Win95 32 bit for win95 files. How can I blow all this
away and get RH 7.0 to install only on hdb3, a four gig partition for
RH?

Thank you.

Linux Frustration Rant: two problems in one

2001-02-26 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Everyone:

This is about one of the biggest frustrations I've found with all
flavors Linux. Practically every time I find a command or program I want
to use, BAM ... Permission Denied. For instance, I lurk on this forum
trying to learn from everyone else's problems. One of the things I've
waited months for is a way to set the system time from a time server.
Today I saw a message and reply about netdate => rdate. I immediately
checked for the manpage on the RH box and it was there (I do appreciate
Linux's "if it is installed, it has a manpage" practice). Great! I
connected the RH 6.2 box to the 'net and ran rdate from the command line
with -s -p and it worked ... sort of. It did check the time and print
it. Then it returned: "rdate: could not set system time: Operation not
permmited."

And that's the way it is with practically everything. I originally
installed Linux to learn C++ over a year ago but that has become
learning to cope with an OS that constantly refuses to work. Yes, I am
uneducated in the wims and ways of the Unices, I'm trying to learn. But
there is no easy way without buying a library or taking classes, both of
which I can't afford and have minimal time to dedicate since I work
twelve hour shifts six days a week. I don't mind having to learn
something new, in fact, I embrace it, I enjoy learning. But the
manpages, the docs, anything I can read seems to leave out just enough
that "it" still won't work. That's why I still have to check my email on
a Windows box.

Obviously, the problem above with rdate is permissions. Being a system
function it must be run as root. However, all docs say "don't run as
root except to perform system maintenance" and I ran it as a user, like
a good student. But being the only user I need to run it as user, not
root. Also obvious is that each command or program requires a different
"permission" scheme for different circumstances.

I have read about permissions in several manpages, info's and even got a
copy of Linux Unleashed (Third Edition) and Linux In A Nutshell (Second
Edition) but nothing ever hints when a permission conflict may arise or
how to approach the problem. I'm also aware that the problems of
security of a large network are vastly different from a single machine
with one user or a small home network.

So my question today is two fold: (a) where can I finally learn how to
handle permissions in different contexts, and (b) how can I set up rdate
to set the system time when run as user?

Thank you.

Hello Mr. Galpin and Mr. Aldrich:

Thank you for your input. I agree that I would be a lot safer using Linux for my
gateway. Unfortunately, Compaq sent the docs showing how to "plug it in and turn
it on" but that's all. No hardware docs except for the monitor.

I double checked Windows Hardware Manager for complete names. Most hardware
items are listed by Brand and Model number unless it's a generic item. Under the
Network Adapters tab there are three listed, (1) Dial-up Adapter, (2) Network
TeleSystems PPPoE adapter (NTSP3), and (3) TI ADSL LAN adapter. However there
are only two cards in the box, a generic HSP56 modem and the TI ADSL LAN adapter
(without an identifying model number (I've had them out to look)), everything
else must be built onto the motherboard.

At least, I know it's using the PPoE protocol and RH does too. I did go to the
TI main web page to check specs on the card but I couldn't find any reference to
it. I was hoping their reputation for building "hardware" components extended to
my TI ADSL LAN adapter. As you suggested, I'll probably have to buy an external
but I'm not sure which on to get. It'll probably be a nightmare setting up the
network and sharing the DSL. :-((

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I must have missed the question about the modem. It is
an internal TI ADSL LAN adapter and I don't have any docs on it. I've checked
the web but can't find any info on it as to whether it works in Linux or not.
It wasn't mentioned in any of the ADSL HOWTOs I've read so far. Any help you

Network Newbie Question

2001-02-15 Thread Jerry Human

I asked this question last weekend before I realized a lot of you
wouldn't see it over the weekend so I'm asking again.
I'm going to setup a network at home for all my boxes as a way to learn
networking. I have the following:

2 Linux Pentium boxes (RH 6.2)
1 Windows ME Pentium box (Windows apps)
1 Windows 95 or RH6.2 486DX box (gaming & print server)
1 ADSL account (currently Windows ME)
1 Lexmark Z31 Printer
1 Apollo Printer
2 Panasonic dot matrix printers
1 Flatbed Scanner
1 Digital Camera

Since I don't know squat about networks yet and RH 6.2 is my primary OS,
I'd like to know what you experienced people would think is the
correct/optimum configuration would be for this hardware and have future
expansion capabilities. Naturally, I'd like to access the ADSL from all
the boxes. For instance, would I be better off getting a hub to connect
all the boxes and DSL or should I get a router or do I need both?

Please tell me what you think, what hardware would be necessary, where
to get current docs/principles, what reading I should do and anything
else you feel would help.

Re: installing imp.tar.gz

2001-02-08 Thread Jerry Human

Hi Gentlemen:

Would it be possible to write a script that would do this automatically
for any new package install?

For instance, if the script was called "ump" you would type "ump
and it would insert the package name into the command
"tar -xzvf .tar.gz; cd ; less README" in the
appropriate places, execute and leave you in the README for that
package. That would eliminate a lot of repetitivly typing long package
names, eliminate typing mistakes, always use the same command
eliminating the "I forgot to ..." and "I should have ..." mistakes, and
always start the README file to be scanned before "corrupting" a new
package with incorrect parameters.

Thanks.

Red Hat 6.2 Install

2001-02-04 Thread Jerry Human

I have a 20 gig hard drive that was in another machine as /dev/hdc with
RH 6.2 installed at hdc3. The drive is now in a Compaq Presario 5000P
series box with ADSL but as /dev/hdb and I want to reinstall RH 6.2 in
the same partition with the new box setup. Unfortunately, the boot disk
I made for the original install on hdc won't work for hdb and the
install cd boots but hangs with a kernel panic error. How can I install
RH 6.2 on this box?

Thank you.

Well Damn! I must be getting dense in my old age! I should have realized this

ADSL Network

2000-12-26 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Good People:

I hope everyone is still having a very good Christmas holiday. I guess I
am because I got the present for my October birthday just in time for
Christmas. My ADSL was hooked up a little over a week ago. Now I'd like
to network all my computers together including sharing the ADSL. What I
have is a Compaq Presario 700 mhz Celeron with Windows ME and an
internal TI ADSL LAN adapter on Ameritech (Prodigy) DSL, a 566 mhz
Celeron generic computer and a 486DX50 and a couple of printers, a
flatbed scanner and a digital camera.

I've noticed that I can get 10/100 tx PCI nic's for $4 and up and 10/100
tx 5 port hubs for $35 and up. I've also heard that the best firewall OS
is OpenBSD and I'm currently running Red Hat 6.2, waiting for 7.2 to be
released. Since I'm so new to all this, I'd like to get a little advice.

What I want is a Linux network connected via a hub to Windows boxes and
Red Hat X.2 boxes connected to ADSL through a Linux firewall (or
ipchains). Ok people, I'm sitting down and got my seatbelt on so let me
have it. What is wrong with this setup and what would you do, you don't
need to be gentle.

Thank you and Happy New Year.

Hello Everyone:

I've been following this thread since it began and I'm really interested in the
info. I'm getting DSL from Ameritech in a couple of weeks and they will supply a
566 mhz Presario with Windows 98 SE and an internal ADSL modem . There is also
supposed to be some sort of firewall software installed. Naturally, as soon as
the installing technician leaves, I'll want to connect (I will have to build the
network) all my Linux boxes to it and a secure shell will be necessary.

Therefore, which release would be the best (most secure) to use for the two OS's
and where would I get the Windows version? Also, since I'm not too worried about
the Windows box (probably just use it for a few games and mp3 cache) and
wouldn't trust a Windows firewall (isn't that like using Swiss cheese to plug a
leak?), I'll probably set up some type of security between the DSL-Windows box
and the Linux (currently RH 6.2) boxes, where the important stuff will be
located. I've heard that OpenBSD has the best Linux firewall/security and RH or
Debian has the best network software. Am I correct? What would be the most
secure scenario for this setup?

Thank you.

It's Vidiot's fault! :-)

2000-09-14 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Everyone:

I was following the thread on Vidiot's rant on "Who broke GCC compiling
..." and found it very entertaining and informative. As I read the
various posts a question formed in my mind. First, a little background
info.

Some of you might might remember a recent post of mine concerning the
GCC compiler ( Is it possible? Sept. 09, 00). What I was trying to
accomplish was to learn C++ at work. My job is a factory job that
includes a lot of "butt time" (sitting and waiting for the next
operation) and I wanted to use that butt time to study. Since that
didn't work out, I decided to do the exercises on the laptop (old 386
with 20 meg HD) with a DOS editor and compile them on my desktop after I
returned home. My desktop has a new 10.2 gig HD that is less than 10%
used even with RH 6.2 installed. Therein lies the second reason for this
post.

Is it possible to have two versions of the GCC compiler installed on the
same HD, one being the default install in RH for maintaining RH and
compiling SRPM's and the other on a different dir/partition just for
compiling the exercises? The two main reasons for the second install are
a) exercises would not be mixed with system files to avoid system
corruption and wouldn't need kernel related files, b) the second install
could be the latest and greatest version if it wouldn't cause lib
problems.

If I can do this, what/where do I d/l and how would it need to be
installed to avoid corrupting the other version would be the next
question.

Obviously, once I get through this learning C/C++ period, I would not be
asking dumb questions like this one.

Thanks.

Am I asking for problems?

2000-09-12 Thread Jerry Human

I am considering getting a deal from Ameritech for DSL and a Compaq
Presario computer with a 566 mhz Celeron cpu loaded with Windows 98 SE
(Sucker Edition? :-) ). Their DSL modem would be installed and
configured using windows. Normally I don't like brand named computers
because they are usually very proprietary (expensive and difficult to
'customize'). It does come with a 10 gig hard drive giving plenty of
room for adding RH 6.2. Has anyone had any experience using RH 6.2 on a
Compaq Presario?

Naturally, I'd want to network it to my other boxes, would the Compaq
Presario cause proprietary type problems setting up the network? Of
course, I'd want to use RH and compatible adapters for the network.

Since Windows seems to have a lot of security holes in it, would there
be a way to use RH's firewall/ipchains or whatever the best security is,
to secure the machine since DSL is a 24/7 connection?

I know this sounds a little flaky but I haven't had a proprietary box
since my computer classes in the early 80's.

Thanks.

Hi Bill:

I have a 486DX50 VLB running RH 6.2. Previously, before settling on RH, I had
installed about 80% of all the different versions of Linux. Each one had it's
own reason for causing problems but I eventually got each one to install so I
could check it out to see if "it's the one for me."

During the time I did these installs I had many occasions to have problems that
sounds like your problem. However, each one required a different solution
because the version required different things. Needless to say, I learned a
great deal from the experience. I even have RH 6.2 running on a 386 currently.
Now, to your problem.

First, I believe there is a conflict in your box. I have found that for an
install of any version to start and proceed to any length, the hardware must be
acceptable and basically correct for the version being installed. Since yours
has started and succeeded to a point, I would try to discover what it was trying
to do and why it failed. I would suspect an addressing conflict but I'm not
there watching the progress. Also, part of the conflict could be due to the
"true-blue IBM" architecture, since it would be somewhat proprietary.

Second, the memory you have is sufficient but slow. I've read that graphical
installs need a minimum of 16 meg, text installs need 8 meg and some brave souls
have successfully painfully installed using only four meg. However, as suggested
before, test it.

Third, the FTP install may be compounding the problem. I've found that RH has
the most difficult FTP install of all the versions. IMHO, I would suggest
resolving the netwo

Actually, I have a small maintenance install of RH 6.2 on hda4. The install
that no longer boots is on a new WD 10.2 gig I installed just for RH, which is
hdc. I used the hda4 RH to partition the new drive with four primary
partitions. hdc1 is 3 gig for RH 6.2, hdc2 is 100 meg for swap, hdc3 is ext2
space for downloads and data files and hdc4 is vfat for Win95B downloads and
data files. RH install formatted (installed file system) hdc1 and hdc2, the
new install was used to format hdc3 and hdc4 was formatted vfat by Win95B.

Does this help? At this point, I have to reinstall RH on hdc1 but that won't
stop the corruption.

Thank you.

2000-09-01 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Everyone:

The Story:

About two months ago I installed a third EIDE hard drive (WD 102AA 10.2
gig) on my box. The install itself wasn't a problem, it was recognized
and formatted easily. I divided the drive into four primary partitions.
Soon I discovered a problem booting between Win95B and RH 6.2. RH 6.2
was installed on the first primary partition and the swap file was put
the second partition, the third partition was formatted ext2 for the
purpose of storing non-RH 6.2 programs and data to help avoid
corruption, and the fourth partition was formatted vfat32 for saving
downloads from the web and installing progs I wanted to test to avoid
Win95B corruption.

The RH 6.2 install went flawlessly and everything except the servers
(ftp server, lan server, etc.) was installed without a hitch. Booting to
Win95B is the default and booting RH 6.2 is accomplished with a boot
floppy. After booting Win95B and formatting the fourth partition and
testing to verify accessibility and dependability I rebooted RH and
found it wasn't there!!!

I rebooted Win95B and checked the WD support services. I d/led a diag
and checked the drive finding the ATA/66 option was turned off and
turned it on. That seemed to fix the problem. RH booted fine. At that
point I started using the drive in both OSes. RH worked great and Win95B
had plenty of extra space. Like I said before, that was a few months
ago. Now suddenly, RH won't boot!!!

The partition is found and initialized, boot progresses through about
half of the normal boot process then hangs shortly after the ext2 file
sys is reset to read/write. Nothing was done to alter the RH install, it
is used as a client box to surf the net, learn gnome, gimp, play games
installed by the RH install, and just learn more about Linux in general.
None of the config files have been changed since the original install
and setup a few months ago. Originally two boot disks were made. Booting
with either disk acts exactly the same so I can rule out boot disk
corruption.

It seems to me that Win95B will occasionally write an id to the root
partition of the drive even though it only has access to the fourth
partition and that id corrupts the RH boot. How can this be avoided? The
problem only occurs when booting RH after working in Win95B. Once RH
boots, the box can be started in RH any number of times without problem.
No degrading of the RH boot was noticed since the original ATA/66
problem. This problem just happened, no hardware/software settings were
changed for Win95B or RH.

The Specs:

486DX50 VLB
QD6580 VLB EIDE controller, i/o interface
hda Maxtor 1 gig
hdb WD 340 meg
hdc WD 10.2 gig
hdd NEC 40x CD

The motherboard setup only accommodates two IDE devices on port 0 irq
14, however, the controller allows two EIDE devices on port 0 irq 14 and
port 1 irq 15 and has its own bios which is enabled. Ports 0 and 1 has
been used for a few years without a problem until the WD 10.2 gig and RH
6.2 was installed.

I know I need and want to get a new box but that is financially
impossible at this time. Actually, I eventually intend to build a new
box and use the WD 10.2 gig in it as hda and use the 486DX50 VLB as a
firewall.

Thank you.

you'll see where the
link points.  It wasn't a "flag" that changed the situation, the
filesystem
was restructured.
Ok, that may be. I apologize for my structured programming terminology.
I'm not sure what happened or how it happened. It was working fine, I shut
it down and booted Win95 and used it for four or five days then tried to
boot RH on hdc1 and found this problem. No manual changes were made to
either OS by me and no one else has access. I haven't setup email on that
install yet so I doubt I have a Linux virus but since I have accessed the
web, I suppose it's possible. But doesn't a virus usually delete key files,
like boot data? Looking at the files, they all seem to be there. By comparing
the /etc and /boot dirs (they were almost identical immediately after installation
and still are) is how I found that /etc/rc.d was different. Everything
I've read so far says to edit the files in /etc/rc.d/rcx.d to change the
boot process so that's where I looked.
Please find a Unix book that explains file
systems,
it will help you understand your problem.
I'd really like to. In fact, so far, I've bought four but they seem to
'dance' around the actual heart of the subject. The only good book I've
got is  Linux in a Nutshell by Ellen Siever from O'Reilly.
It's great for checking syntax, if you know the command to check. Can you
recommend a good Linux book that explains file systems and other
aspects of the OS?
BTW, you may have worse problems, as init is supposed
to be in /sbin.
You may be correct but  I hope not. I will check /sbin. I am assuming
(I hate that word) that since I can browse the partition and edit and save
files that my problem is correctable as long as I can find the actual cause.
Thank you.

2000-08-29 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Good People:

I hope someone can help me with my dilemma. After using Win95 for a
while, I tried to boot RH 6.2 but is stops right after 'Freeing unused
kernel memory: 64k freed' and gives the error:

Warning: Unable to open an initial console.
Kernel Panic: No init found.

Upon looking at the dirs and files on the disk with bash, I find that
several critical dirs (rc.d, ppp, etc.) have been changed to links! This
is indicated by the bash color option being enabled and bright green
seems to be the color used to indicate links. Of course, if /etc/rc.d is
a link then the init files located in it's various subdirs are not
available, so it won't boot.

So how can I edit the flags to change the links back to dirs? Which
editor will allow me to look at and change the flags of a file/dir?
Everything worked fine before for a few months until this happened, so I
know everything is there and usable. Is there a way to reset the flags
and then protect them from being changed again except by root?

Thank you.

Re: hdc siezed by windoze

2000-08-26 Thread Jerry Human

Thank you for your efforts and time answering my plea for help. I'm sorry
for the delay answering but I had to be at work this morning at 5:00 a.m.
Below is a copy of the original message that contains all the facts I have
at this time. Please read it carefully as some parts contain a lot of detail.
RH 6.2
was installed on the first primary partition and the swap file was
put
in the second partition, the third partition was formatted ext2 for
the
purpose of storing non-RH 6.2 programs and data to help avoid file
corruption, and the fourth partition was formatted vfat32 for saving
downloads from the web and installing progs I wanted to test to avoid
Win95B corruption.
The RH 6.2 install went flawlessly and everything except the servers
(ftp server, lan server, etc.) was installed without a hitch. Booting
to
Win95B is the default and booting RH 6.2 is accomplished with a boot
The boot process hangs immediately after the kernel is read from the
boot floppy.
No degrading of the RH boot was noticed since the original ATA/66
problem. This problem just happened, no hardware/software settings
were
changed for Win95B or RH. Also, I have checked but didn't find any
viruses.
The actual error messages:
    Warning: Unable to open an
initial Console.
    Kernel Panic: No init found.
Try passing init= option to kernel.

The Specs:
486DX50 VLB
QD6580 VLV EIDE controller, i/o interface
    hda
Maxtor 1 gig
    hdb
WD 340 meg
    hdc
WD 10.2 gig
    hdd
NEC 40x CD
The motherboard setup only accommodates two IDE devices on port 0 irq
14, however, the controller allows two EIDE devices on port 0 irq 14
and
allows two EIDE devices on port 1 irq 15 and has its own bios which
is
enabled. Ports 0 and 1 has been used for a few years without a problem
until the WD 10.2 gig and RH 6.2 was installed.
I know I need and want to get a new box but that is financially
impossible at this time. Actually, I eventually intend to build a new
box and use the WD 10.2 gig in it as hda and use the 486DX50 VLB as
a
firewall.

h. Is the 3rd HDD the master on the secondary channel or the slave?
Yes, Master, irq 15. First attempted to install RH 6.2 on hda5, where I
quickly learned that 600 meg wasn't enough room for a robust client install.
That is the reason I got the third drive in the first place. Perhaps I
should summarize my configuration, also:
hda    1.2 gig
hda1 C:    Win95 boot and PC
DOS 7.0 install, PC DOS is booted with a floppy
hda3 E:    Win95 actual program
install and applications
hda5 /
RH 6.2 original limited install, basically text console only, X installed
but having space problems
hdb    340 meg
hdb1    D:    storage for downloads and
program testing to avoid corruption of C: and E: and virus protection
hdb2    swap    20 meg swap partition/file
for hda5 install of RH 6.2
hdc    10.2 gig
hdc1    /
new RH 6.2 install on 3 gig partition, everything but the servers
hdc2    swap    100 meg swap partition
for RH 6.2 on hdc1
hdc3    ext2    partition to store and
test downloads; same as D: but for Linux
hdc4    vfat    additional storage for
downloads

Hello Mr. Neidorff:

Thank you for your input. I was beginning to think that my problem was
beyond the scope of the list.

Yes, as I stated in the fourth paragraph, when I made the original boot
disk I made two and put one away in case something like this might
happen. An old DOS habit. I always make two because too many times a
problem is just something simple like a corrupted file. And yes, I did
test the backup boot disk before I put it away.

I've also checked and the boot files are in the correct places, have the
correct names, have not been corrupted, both the floppy and the hard
disk are readable and correct so far as I can ascertain. Even the
inittab is in the right place and not corrupted or changed. I must
assume that the change is something done by Win95 in the 'hidden' boot
cylinder (good ol' Mr. Gates trying to eliminate the competition,
maybe).

Something is different due to the separate hard disk. As I stated
before, the RH 6.2 install on the same hard disk as Win95 is not
affected, only the install on the third hard disk.

Can you think of something that might occur (such as Win95 putting its
own id on the disk to reference the vfat32 partition) that I haven't
mentioned? This problem occurred after using Win95 for several days
without booting RH 6.2.

Thank you.

Hey Adam:

I had to wrestle with this one too. What works for me is really simple.
First you have to make sure you have a place to mount the win drive(s).
For instance, you may have a dir in /mnt called /mnt/hda1 to mount C: or
you may not. Check to see. What I did, since I am so lazy, is create new
dirs for the mount points. I used /d1 for C:, /d2 for E: and /d3 for f:.
Then I edited /etc/fstab and added these lines:

/dev/hda1 /d1 vfatdefaults0 0
/dev/hdb1 /d2 vfatdefaults0 0
/dev/hda5 /d3 vfatdefaults0 0

and then rebooted. From then on, the drives C:, D:, and E: are
automatically mounted at boot. If you don't want your drives
automounted, just enter the same info in the mount command, but you
still have to mount point.

All this is explained in the mount and fstab manpages.

Good luck!

Scanner setup help needed

2000-07-20 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Everyone:

I have just purchased an IBM IdeaScan flatbed scanner, model # M/T
0275-RR2. Does anyone else have one working in RH 6.2? Was it difficult
to setup? Where can I find RH 6.2 docs/progs for it?

The manual suggests an EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port) mode. I'm not
familiar with that phrase. What is it and is it available for a linux
box?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Max Mounts

2000-06-14 Thread Jerry Human

Hello Good People:

Does anyone know how or where I can learn how to increase the maximum
number of mounts in RH 6.2? My fstab has 14 mount points properly listed
for automount but on boot I get an error: "too many mount points" after
the sixth mount. The same error occurs if I try to mount manually. This
slows boot and won't allow me to access the mount points.
