However, as I understand it, it's not possible to use apt-rpm for _any_
RPMs yet, is it? In other words, you need to point it to a repository
that contains RPMs with the necessary apt metadata. Is this correct?
If it is correct, what happens then if I choose to install RPMs that do
_not_ have this metadata? Does it hose everything then? Anyone with
enough experience with apt-rpm who could answer these questions, please?

Well, he appears to be right. I just read it in LinuxToday:

http://linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2002-02-27-019-20-NW-RH

It doesn't look like the beta of RH 8.0 though. It sounds more like the
beta for that server edition they announced a week ago or so.

Bob,

I never configured Samab to run from xinetd, but I did configure it to run
from inetd in the old days and everything worked just fine. I don't see
why it shouldn't work with xinetd too. Your guess is correct. The daemons
won't be running unless a client tries to use them via a socket connection.
At that point, xinetd will launch the smbd and nmbd processes if the whole
thing is configured right.

Brian,

Is that source code from kernel.org or an RPM file? I don't have the time
to check and see what the latest Red Hat RPM kernel file available on their
servers is. In any case, if you are referring to the pristine source from
kernel.org or one of their mirrors, take a look at the README file once you
extract the tarball. You have all the directions there.

On the other hand, if you have the RPM kernel you should install it using the
regular 'rpm' command although most likely you'll want to make sure you run
it with the 'rpm -ivh' options instead of 'rpm -Uvh'.

That should be it.

There is no equivalent in the Linux world. You can use Bluefish if you
want to, but there is no powerful WYSIWYG HTML editor in the Linux world
that I know of.

If you desperately need Dreamweaver, you may want to try running it on an

I didn't want to answer myself, considering it a waste of everybody's time,

Perl's CGI.pm module and tables

2002-02-03 Thread Jesus Ortega (a.k.a. Nitebirdz)

I have a quick question regarding the use of 'td' for tables in the CGI.pm
Perl module. I have a script that contains the following piece of code:

  print table({-border=>'0',-width=>'100%',-cellpading=>'0'},
Tr({-border=>'0',-cellpadding=>'0',align=>'center',bgcolor=>'blue'},
[
  td(['Home','OS','Comm','Hardware','Lang','Gfx/Multi','WinNT','Span/Port']),
  td(['link','Junction','plp.com','Support','link','link','Insight','link']),
  td(['link','link','link','link','link','link','link','link']),
]
)
  );

How would I change the background color on _one_ cell? In other words, how
would I make sure that _only_ the 'Home' cell in the table has a different
background color using correct CGI.pm syntax?

Thanks.

Marko,

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Are you trying to install
Red Hat Linux into a laptop via NFS? If so, how come you are using Linuxconf
from the laptop? Perhaps just testing it?

We need to know what error message is the client getting, and also what error
you see on the server side. First of all, try running the following command
from the laptop (as root):

mount server:/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

This assumes that you also mounted the CD-ROM under /mnt/cdrom on the server
side. Now, what error do you get from this command? What do you see in
the /var/log/messages file on the server when running the command? Other
things you can do from the laptop too:

/usr/sbin/rpcinfo -p server
/usr/sbin/showmount -e server

What output are you getting from these? Did you run the 'exportfs -s' on
the server after setting it all up? Are you sure the server is running both
the portmapper and the nfsd?

LuisMi,

My guess is that the script was hosed when you were editing it and the
connection was dropped. You'll have to add something like this to the
header of the script:

#!/bin/sh -x

This will display a lot of comments as the script runs which should help
you figure out what is wrong with it. In any case, whenever I encountered
this error with my own scripts it was usually because I forgot to add the
closing brackets in a while or if loop or something like that. It seems to
be due to syntax errors most of the time.

Other than that, you may want to try editing the file in vim again to see
if you are welcome with an error warning that you should run vim with the
"-r" option to reopen the previous session that crashed. I believe you
can also run 'vim -r' at the prompt to see a list of such files, but am not
sure now.

I'd like to know the answer to this one too. RPM packages are most of the
time relocatable, right? If that's the case, you should be able to use
the --relocate option with the 'rpm' command. See the man page for more
information.

Would this work? Again, I'd definitely like to know the answer to that.
I never tried relocating a GCC package.

Not sure, and I'd love to see one of the Red Hat employees who is usually
hanging around this list to reply and tell us for sure how to install it.
I assume you can install the default Red Hat 7.2 distribution and then
update all the packages from the Rawhide directory on their server perhaps
using FTP or downloading a copy of the files locally.

I wish they had some information on how to proceed with all this.

I suppose there is a good chance that either the system was cracked into or
someone seriously screwed it up.

Look for the typical suspects, and run commands such as:

netstat -an (look for suspicious ports and connections)
last (corrupted or strange information)
lastlog (the same here)
/var/log/messages (gaps in the timestamps)
top (look for suspicious programs running)
ps auxw (same here)
ifconfig -a (see if the ethernet interface is in promiscuous mode)
rpm -Va (look for issues with sizes, missing files, MD5 checksums...)

If possible at all, yank the ethernet cable right away and then take the time
to do some investigation and see if the system has been cracked into.

First of all, make sure you are in the right directory before you run the
'./configure' command.

Second, make sure there actually is a "configure" file under that directory
once you uncompress and untar the tarball and 'cd' into it.

Third, make sure that the "configure" file is executable (run the 'ls -l'
command to check the permissions on the file).

Finally (well, perhaps first), read the README or INSTALL file and make
sure that you actually _have_ to run the "./configure" script. Even though
that's the case quite often, there are some instances when there is no
configure script whasoever.

Simple question about IRC and XChat

This should hopefully be a simple question. When using XChat I need to see
the list of chat rooms on a given server, so I go ahead and try the "/list"

there any way to use regular expressions? If I try something like

Can you please paste here more information? I'm particularly referring to
the errors right before and right after that one that you pasted. It just
provides enough context.

Are you getting the error when running the vmware-config.pl script? What
version of VMWare are you running? VMWare Workstation 3.0? Did you install
on Red Hat Linux 7.2?

Are you sure you moved _everything_ out of that directory? It seems to me
that you may be confusing the concepts of directory, partitions and file
systems although I may be completely misunderstanding you. If that's the
case, my apologies.

What's the _complete_ output of the 'df -h' command? I'd say you are simply
moving files from "/" to, say, "/usr", but _both_ are actually mounted on the
root filesystem. Does it make any sense? The "mounted on" does not mean
that you have a whole partition mounted on a single directory. It is mounted
on that directory and subdirectories too, and this includes /usr, /var, /tmp,
etc. If that's the case, simply moving files from / to /usr would not save
any space at all.

Can you think of any reason as to why nscd is returning the following error?

connect(6, {sun_family=AF_UNIX, sun_path="/var/run/.nscd_socket"}, 110) = -1
ECONNREFUSED (Connection refused)

Also, are you in a NIS environment by any chance? I can see several system
calls that involve a NIS configuration. Are you running 'nscd'? Check it
out with 'ps auxw | grep nscd' for instance.

Their installation is not so easy though, and it also takes a while to get
used to the other Debian-only tools. I have to acknowledge though that their
apt-get kicks ass. All in all, it needs some polish and I cannot see most

Well, merely one hour after I sent this message to the queue CNet News
published the following:

http://news.com.com/2100-1001-819578.html

Like I said, this makes more sense to me. Basically, the whole thing boils
down to:

o "Sources familiar with the situation emphatically insisted the two
companies are not near an acquisition deal, nor have they discussed one."

o "Still, even if the two companies are not considering a merger, AOL
Time Warner could license Red Hat for use on PCs or other devices for use
  with its online service."

Something like this would still be great news for Red Hat (especially since
they have been pushing their toolkit for embedded devices lately) and would
still keep the company's independence as we all like it. On the other hand,
when it comes to AOL it seems to me that they have already seen the writing
in the wall, just like Netscape did several years ago. If Microsoft's
monopoly in the desktop market is left untouched (and the latest news we
got from the DOJ vs. Microsoft case seem to point in that direction), they'd
better figure out a way to steal market share from Windows XP et alii or
Microsoft will also end up imposing its own MSN and related applications in
that market.

Summing up, it seems to me that we are not witnessing an acquisition but
rather a "strategical partnership".

purchases Red Hat), they are simply negotiating a "strategical agreement" where
AOL can "leverage" Red Hat's expertise to develop set-top boxes for American
homes in order to fight Microsoft's expansion into other fields such as online
access (MSN), online content (MSNBC, among others), gaming (the X-box), etc.
Now, that could something to get excited about... although it's anybody's

That's precisely my point. I do trust Red Hat employees after they have
proven to me year after year that they deserve my loyalty. If AOL decides
to buy the company and those employees stay, I'll give them the benefit of
the doubt. If they start leaving en masse... well, it's time to switch to
Debian! :-)

That shouldn't be an issue if Red Hat is kept as a subsidiary of AOL or at
least as a semi-autonomous company like Netscape. In any case, I'm not saying
I'm really excited by the news. All I'm saying is that, given the track
record of Red Hat so far I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
As I said in my original message, if they do something I don't like I will
_then_ jump to Debian most likely. In the meantime, all I'll do is _prepare_
for the eventuality. That's all.

Let's not forget that Netscape was doomed way before AOL bought it, and they
still seem to be supportive of the Mozilla project anyways. Nevertheless, if
I see something like what happened in the case of Netscape also happening to
Red Hat (i.e. employees fleeing the place), I will then consider switching
to another distro. I don't feel any sort of loyalty to any institution
(and this includes governments and countries as well), but rather to the
people behind them. If knowledgeable Red Hat employees that I respect start
leaving the company, I may switch to Debian then. By the way, Slashdot is
publishing some comments on Alan Cox's threat to leave Red Hat if they are
bought by AOL.

Interesting. I get the very same error on a system running RH 7.2, and
also on a different system running RH 7.1. On the other hand, the following
command seems to work fine:

rpm -q -vv --whatprovides /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.6

Come on! Shouldn't we give them the benefit of the doubt? If a merger or
buyout does happen, you can bet I'll be trying to get more familiar with
Debian, just in case. At least they cannot be bought. Yet, there is no doubt
in my mind that I'd rather give Red Hat the benefit of the doubt. They have
turned out an excellent product that, at least in my view, far surpasses the
overall quality of the other distributions in the market. This is precisely
what drove me to use Red Hat back with the 4.2 release several years ago, and
I don't think it has changed ever since.

Second, Red Hat has proven their commitment to open source so far where it
matters: with their products, and not only with words. They have been
releasing everything (as far as I know) with a GPL license, which among other
things has been used by certain people to start their own distributions.
Not since the old days of the SLS distro has another single distribution
spawned so many other players in the Linux market (well, perhaps Debian is
on a par with Red Hat here).

Third, Red Hat still has excellent developers and employees who have been
working their asses off for several years to turn out great products, great
service and great support. While they remain in their positions doing what
they have been doing all these years, chances are they will still have my
support and I will still use Red Hat.

I also dislike the elitist comments I read in some messages regarding AOL,
and sort of reminds me of the position a lot of people in the Linux community
take to Eric Raymond's calls to make the OS more user-friendly. The fact
that something is more difficult to use does not necessarily mean it is a
better technology. Yes, the opposite is also true, but let's not use this
as an argument.

Finally, the messages that seem to blame AOL for Netscape's doom seem to
forget that Netscape was doomed a long time before AOL even stepped into the
stage. By the way, they are also the guys who have been feeding the Mozilla
project for several years now. Thanks to then, we have Mozilla and Galeon,
among other things.

... and no, I'm not linked to either AOL or Red Hat in _any_ way whatsoever.
It just annoys me to see this type of reaction when both Red Hat and their
employees have given so much to the Linux community.

Webmin has a module that allows you to do this. You connect to the system
via port 1 using your browser, and then launch the ssh module for a
regular shell. I suppose it's not as secure though because the connection
takes place via the Webmin daemon, and I ignore if that connection is secured
at all. My guess is that it's possible to use SSL for Webmin too.

First of all, make sure the 'nmbd' daemon is running on the Red Hat Linux box.

Second, try to pull it up by using the IP address instead of the name just
to troubleshoot and make sure it's not a network issue (it doesn't sound like
it anyways):

Start --> Run --> \\IP\smbshare

Third, check out the "remote announce" config option in the smb.conf file
because you may need to add some IPs there if these systems are in different
subnets.

Fourth, check out the "wins server" config option in the same file to specify
the IP address of the WINS server in the network. It sounds like an IP to
Netbios resolution problem to me.

I'm sure there are more things you can try, but at least these ones can get
you started.

Absolutely right. I just added my longer version because it also allows you

src.rpm --> source RPM, contains source, you need to compile (see below)
norarch.rpm --> architecture independent (it may contain scripts, etc.)

In order to install from source RPM

su -
cd /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS
mv /downloads/filename.src.rpm .
rpm -i filename.src.rpm
cd ../SPECS
rpm -bb filename.spec
cd ../RPMS/i386
rpm -Uvh filename.i398.rpm

information:

Not that I know much about getty, but I suppose if you expect some help we'll
need more information anyways. For instance, did you configure this system
to allow dial-in connections? Any other error messages in the logs? What's
the main purpose of this system (aside from mail, which I can guess due to
the hostname)? Are you using uugetty?

A segmentation fault is usually caused whenever the application tried to
access a memory address that does not belong to it. It's something similar
to a "General Protection Fault" in Linux.

Not positive, but it sounds to me like a problem with the configuration of
the SCSI devices. Did you try perhaps unplugging as many devices from the
controller as possible? Did you verify that the SCSI disk utility has no
problems detecting the drive, etc.? Terminators? That would be the first
place I'd look into.

Neeraj,

Check out the Gnome Control Center. I believe there is an option there
somewhere to disable it. If you see it starts automatically as soon as you
insert a CD-ROM into the drive or something like that, you may as well
consider turning off 'autofs' from the init scripts. In any case, I think
I ended up removing the whole nautilus package and everything appears to be
working fine.

rpm -e nautilus

If it helps, I recently got a similar trace and was unable to boot up although
at irregular intervals. It was because I had been playing with the memory
DIMMs and ended up installing a combination unsupported by the motherboard
(combination of four 72 pin DIMMs with one 168 pin DIMM). I get most of the
computer equipment handed down from friends and relatives, and they never
come with any manuals, etc. So, I come across errors like this when replacing
parts a little bit at random to see how I can get it to work.

All in all, every single time I came across that particular trace it was due
to either an erroneous memory configuration or bad memory chips.

Can you mount it manually usng two options?

mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

Any errors in the /var/log/messages file? There is a good chance that the
/dev/cdrom link is pointing to the wrong device. Keep in mind that "hdc"
should be the secondary master device. Is that the way your system is
truly configured?

Booting a new untested kernel remotely

2001-12-18 Thread Jesus Ortega (a.k.a. Nitebirdz)

Got a simple question, although perhaps the answer is not so simple. I
have a RH 7.2 system running LILO that I'm using to test new kernels. Yet,
there is not graphics console attached to the system. I'd like to know if
there is any simple way to configure LILO to boot a new untested kernel
only _once_ so that if it fails I can always shut down the system and safely
boot into the old tested kernel.

Is there any way to either configure LILO to do this or pass a given option
to 'init' or 'shutdown' so that it automatically boots into a given kernel
_only_ once?

Thanks.

A trace of the 'whois' command doesn't seem to point to any issue with the
DNS configuration itself. I just ran the following command on a system
where the 'whois' utility appears to be working fine:

strace -fro /tmp/whois.out whois virtualschool.edu

After that, I took a look at the contents of /tmp/whois.out (you may want
to do the same) and found out a few 'open()' system calls to certain files
that could be missing in your system:

/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/nsswitch.conf
/var/run/.nscd_socket
/etc/ld.so.cache
/etc/host.conf
/etc/hosts
...
...

Well, you get the idea. I'd suggest you run the same command and take a
look at the contents of the output file to see where your 'whois' utility
is failing. There is a good chance it could be with one of these files
(did you check your /etc/hosts?).

I didn't get the beginning of the thread, but are you sure you are not trying
to do POP? In other words, are you trying to download email from this system?
If so, you also need to install the imap RPM, at least in older versions of
Red Hat such as 6.2. Sendmail is a MTA and it can _not_ be configured to
POP email.

I just thought it was important to point this out since the default kernel

Fred,

I installed the beta version of Red Hat Linux 7.2 on a system with 128 MB
of memory, and also noticed how slow it was compared to my main system
(256 MB of memory and SCSI drive). I first blamed it on the smaller amount
of memory, but then a fellow pointed out that there is a good chance it
could also be due to the kernel itself and all the VM issues it has been
experiencing.

Did you try installing a different kernel from the 2.4 series? Did you try
with the ac kernels?

I still have a feeling if you add more memory (pretty cheap these days, isn't
it? :) ) it should work fine. Of course, that brings up a completely
different issue: is Red Hat Linux able to run on older hardware with not so
much memory? My guess is that it would as long as you don't install XFree86,
KDE, Gnome, etc. but this is admittedly only a guess.

It's the accounting application. Take a look at the manual pages for 'sa' and
'sar'. Also, check out your /var/log/sa directory to see if the files are
there. They should be ASCII files. Also, check out the manual page on 'sa1'
and the cron job in /etc/cron.hourly, since it seems to me that it is running

I'm not sure you have a clear idea what RPM does. It's a package managing
system, not so different from deb in Debian or the ports collections in the
BSDs, or tardist in the case of IRIX. If you're really interested in building
RPMs, subscribe to the rpm-list:

http://www.redhat.com/mailing-lists/rpm-list/index.html

You can also obtain more information here (the last one may be especially
useful to you, since you seem to be interested in using RPM in a non-Linux
UNIX environment):

http://www.rpm.org/
http://www.linux.ncsu.edu/lug/lectures/rpm-pres/
http://www.redhat.com/docs/books/
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/RPM-HOWTO/index.html
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/RPM-for-Unix-HOWTO.html

CVS and RPM are two totally different things. The first allows you to manage
source code: versions, multiple check-ins, roll backs, etc. The second allows
you to build a package that you can easily install and upgrade on a RPM based
system. Not sure what you mean by "a hook" between them. Their goal is
completely different.
