[Repeater-Builder] Morse Code Contest on JAY LENO
I thought some would find this interesting. - Tomorrow, Friday May 13th, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno will feature a message sending/receiving contest between a cell phone text messaging team and a Morse code team. The Morse code team will consist of Chip Margelli K7JA and Ken Miller K6CTW. Chip and Ken do a lot of contests and DXpeditions. Joe Drago, props manager for the show is KF6OCP. This should result in some excellent PR for ham radio. 73 De Don KA9QJG Yahoo! Larry, You might want to check out the ID-O-MATIC that is sold by N0AXS. This little Kit will run you about $20 bucks and works like a champ! Look up N0AXS or ID-O-MATIC on your search engine and he has a website where you can get this kit and other really neat items for repeaters! I use this for an ID'er on one of my repeaters and it works as good as any of the $500 controllers that I have! 73's and Happy Hamming Gary - W5GNB --- In Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com, Bob Dengler [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: At 5/4/2005 06:26 AM, you wrote: Just was wondering what cwid is available new or used. WA0VUS Larry Kemper Muscatine, Iowa mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED] Not the easiest way, but definitely the cheapest: use K1EL's K-ID PIC: $8 shipped. The hard part is adding: -trigger timing circuitry so it sends the ID every 10 minutes but only while the repeater's in use -audio filter to clean up the square wave output. I've built a small interface board for my latest portapeater that uses the K-ID chip. I'm not 100% happy with the result as I was space time constrained (had to fit within the multi-freq. area in the G.E. MVP only had a few weeks to design, build test), but it does work. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Re: Di-Electric Grease
I may have missed part of this discussion, but if the grease is put in the connector or under black tape, how is it exposed to UV sunlight so that it will destabilize? My understanding about silicon grease is that it can change the dielectric constant of the connector. I have used silicon grease in the connector and the antenna would not tune until it was cleaned out. I also understand that over time that silicon grease will "creep", that is, it will move between the metal to metal connection of the connector and form a thin insulating layer. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater-Builder antennas and other products
One thing I've never been able to explain to people is: Why do the big Celwave, Sinclair, etc. StationMaster type antennas have only 5.2 dB gain? Actually, the 2-meter range ones are listed as typically having only 4.8 dB gain, after putting the longer, lower-frequency elements in the 22' long or so radome. The typical 5/8 wave mobile antennas have 3 dB gain, some of the ham-grade antennas claim 7-8 (and even 10 dB gain). I occasionally get asked, why do you use one of those expensive, low-gain Sinclair, Celwave, etc. antennas instead of Hustlers, Diamonds, etc that have so much more gain? Even the big Scala OG-4 2-Meter antennas are 4 dB gain, if I remember correctly. I've always been at a loss to explain, but having tried some of these amateur antennas, I see quite a performance difference (for the better, of course) when I go back to using the real commercial-grade antennas. I'm sure there must be something simple that I'm overlooking. I always wondered why it wasn't full quieting at the opposite end of the flea market while my portapeater on a mag. mount across the street was solid everywhere. Bob NO6B Hi Bob, No it wasn't, but it wasn't the antennas fault anyway. I was running a PC Board (very lossy) duplexer and only exciter power that year and I didn't have very good results. Last year we had a Micor Mobile conversion with one of my Hack-Saw 10 watt amplifiers running into a WP-639 (real) duplexer. The antenna last year was a home-brew 5/8 wave ground plane (2M only) Had check-ins from 35 miles out. I am going to attempt to run my Comet SBB-224 (tri band, 2M 220, and 440) mobile antenna and CFX-324 triplexer for the Hamvention repeaters. If this doesn't work, I'll do something else, likely install one of our new dual banders. I know they'll work, but not for 220 obviously. To conserve precious battery power, the 220 repeater will only run exciter power (400 mW) as this repeaters main objective is to locally display the new ICS Single M controller. The 2M and 440 machines are open for anyone to use. Again, Repeater Builder will be hosting 3 repeaters for Dayton: 146.625 minus 600 kHz, PL 123.0 224.960 minus 1.6 MHz, PL 123.0 443.250 plus 5 MHz, PL 123.0 Kevin Yahoo! Re: [Repeater-Builder] Repeater-Builder antennas and other products
My experience, My first VHF repeater on a really big tower and I installed one of those "high gain dual band base/repeater antennas." Well static desense finally set in after a couple months, so I decided to purchase a commercial grade DB products antenna for my ham repeater. I think the ham antenna was spec'd at 7 db gain and the commercial antenna was an honest 3db gain DB 222 I think. Well, I had to finally take down the ham antenna before the new one arrived, fiberglass was full of water, and so I mounted a quarter wave mag mount on top of the building at the base of the tower while I waited for the new antenna to arrive in a few weeks. Well the quarter wave antenna preformed almost as well as the dual band up 175 ft higher. When the new antenna arrived WOW, what an increase in performance. One of the local ham guys (works at a Moto shop) had always preached to me about commercial grade antennas and was he right. Never again, I sigh every time I go work on some of the area ham repeaters from the local ham clubs and see the antenna system. The argument usually always gets down to, well it has higher gain. A quick question of how do you check for desense and that is where I usually stop talking, at that point it is useless. So ham antennas for repeaters, been there did that, not doing it again. I'm sure there must be something simple that I'm overlooking. LJ It is all just advertising. The comercial 4 to 6 db gain antennas are refferanced to a dipole antenna. The 'ham' antennas are reffranced to isotropic, or 1/4 wave antennas or maybe a handy talkey rubber duck. Many times the numbers just seem to be made up. Just as you will see things advertised on TV that can not hapen. Just look at the car and truck comercials. Do you think they can do some of that if you were to buy one ? Discover Yahoo! Don- Now tell everyone about your experiences with the 7.06 Spectrum ham grade repeater!! Well static desense finally set in after a couple months, so I decided to purchase a commercial grade DB products antenna for my ham repeater. Don KI0EO NØATH wrote: Anytime I ever questioned this I was always told The Antenna gain is always set by the advertising department. I think that must be fairly close to correct.
