Filenames displayed _where_? When you are browsing via Music Folder
(which is normal), or when you are looking at the current playlist,
which should show the info from your tags, formatted as per your LMS
settings.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Songs showing up by filename not song

2012-04-02 Thread SlimChances

Sorry if this isn't clear.
When I select a track using Music Folder and it is playing it
displays by file name on my SB Classic under Now Playing ; If I
select a track from Music Library it displays under Now Playing by
tag title. Also If I select a track in Squeezeplay it seems to work
correctly like Music Library

For example: I selected using Music Folder,I am playing

1. Blacksmith
Elemental (1985)
Loreena McKennitt

That is how it displays while using Squeezeplay. If I go to my SB
Classic and select via Music Folder the same song displays:

1. Blacksmith.flac

Once it is displayed the latter way only a clear and rescan will
correct the matter however I choose the track (Music Library or Music
Folder)
I had thought this was the Bug that was voted on that I started some
time ago . It appears that Bug has been marked as Resolved

The bug http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17881 is marked as
fixed presumably with 7.7.2 . I just installed 7.7.2 on my Ubuntu box

titles as file names when selecting songs from Music Folder.
I am getting used to browsing using My Library and I know most people
use that method but I found it easier the way I did it before. Is there
anyway of reopening that bug?

yes, deleting cache folder is fine (in windows, this is even a button
in the LMS control panel), music library will rebuild (like clear and
rescan) when you restart LMS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Songs showing up by filename not song

2012-02-06 Thread emalvick

I think there is an important thing with regard to mixing tag types and
identification of multiple tag types: Mp3tag and probably Puddletag
are only going to show the multiple tag types if the tags are present
correctly (i.e. not corrupted).

If the tags are corrupted, the tagger may not show those specific tags
and it may not be able to remove them either. I think this is where
the cut and paste option works. Cutting removes all tags and starts
you off with a clean header and metadata.

Of course, we won't know that is your problem, but it seems likely
given Audiomuze's suggestion and the fact that his process is working.

That being said, it is probably more important to track the cause of
your problem. I'd especially focus on new rips. Running Linux and
being removed from your EAC workflow, I wouldn't worry about how your
EAC files got to where they are at. I would, however, try to find out
what is going on now to get the behavior you see.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Songs showing up by filename not song

2012-02-06 Thread SlimChances

I think with help I have found the source of the problem and I do not
believe it was any of my tagging or ripping programs at fault. I think
the cache files in LMS had become corrupted. Here are the steps I took
that corrected my problem (I think):

1) Using the Search command in the web interface of LMS I looked for
.flac files. It found a small number of files (14, remember I had
corrected a number previously). I wrote these songs down
2) I stopped LMS using the command : sudo
/etc/init.d/logitechmediacenter
stop
3) I deleted the contents of /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache using
Nautilus with Root priviledges. Two folders I left intact though
(DownloadedPlugins, InstalledPlugins)
4) restarted LMS and allowed it to rescan and rebuild the cache files
5) I went through the list of songs I made in step 1 and played the
tracks which all displayed as they should

Perhaps you are thinking that was fairly obvious(clearing the cache)
and I should have done that right from the start and in Windows I
probably would have but I did not know how to do it in Linux-Ubuntu and
didn't even think about it until Aubuti suggested it.

Thanks for all the help everyone offered

song number in them it will show up to .

The name shown in the web-UI when choosing files via BMF seems to be
some weird hybrid between file name and tag data ?

Touch looks the same regardless .

Browse folder is not the best working part of LMS :-/

If tagging is ok artist or album works better

BMF? Don't understand what it means

Browse Music Folder aka Music Folder this mode is usually for badly
tagged files untagged files and testing, it should just follow the
folder and file structure and present files sorted alphabetically
instead of track order (which is the same if files are named 01 etc
).

It can also scan new content if you place an album in the folder and
BMF to it the LMS will pick it up and get it into the dB .

But this is a real bug doing BMF permanently changes the dB of
already scanned files .

Scan for new and changed would not fix it as the files have not changed
, so only a clear and rescan will do .

Or a clear and rescan after the time stamp of the files have changed
that depends on how you use the tagging application , with or without
time stamp modification .

IT APPEARS THE THE SONG TITLE GET CHANGED TO THE FILE NAME

No kidding I was able to se the effect I found an album with names like
01-track.flac First it was ok .
Untill i start adding tracks from the current playlist from it and that
album changed

This is not a browser cache issue either, tried that

If you file names are exactly as the title no problem, except do you

It's actually is a real bug we should write a bug report ! BMF should
not do this, it worked in older versions

Here why it's fixed by you tagging efforts...

You don't actually don't have to do much it's probably enough to have
the modified time of the file changed, then it will be scanned agin
with new and changed and LMS will read it again and thus repair it's
dB .
Untill next time*

Or a complete rescan should work and you don't have to touch the files

Important option to not use !

I may have a bunch of old rips done this way, at the present the
remaining ones are no problem, I think I have fixed the problem ones
over the years.

They tricky part is that sometimes it works , it usually breaks if the
tag info is not the same in the duplicate tags, and usualy gets this
way when some app update one tag but not the other .

Or a subtle change in sbs/lms scanning exposes a tag problem in a
different way.

Some id3 tags have the same meaning as the vorbis comment counterpart
,but I bet some are similar but different ? This can give intresting
results , better eliminating the extra tags :)

2012-02-05 Thread SlimChances

Puddletag shows only VorbisComment tags and MP3Tag shows only Flac tags
on affected albums and usually only one or two tracks out of an entire
album the rest working fine.
It was suggested in a private message that I clear the cache or certain
.db files(/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/artwork.db*
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/cache.db*
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/library.db*
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/persist.db*)
It would seem simpler to delete the entire cache except for the plugin
folders. Would this cause any ill effects to the server?

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Songs showing up by filename not song

2012-02-04 Thread audiomuze

Root cause is likely a tag editor or other software that doesn't follow
tagging specs properly. IDx tagging in particular is problematic at
best. One thing I'm sure of is that neither mp3tag nor puddletag are
responsible as both use proven tagging libraries (taglib and mutagen).

I guess I will ditch Tagscanner, although I found it quite easy to use.
If that was the source of my problem.
Audiomuze I understand the tag removal of ID 3 and APE, but what do you
mean by the cut/paste step? Am I to cut out existing tags and paste them
back in. Fortunately only a small percentage of my albums seem to be
affected but it will be a rather tedious task finding out which ones
they are.
I have a dual boot with Ubuntu and Win XP not Win 7 and much of the
older tagging and ripping was done under XP

Yes, cut and paste back existing tags - mp3tag (and iirc puddletag)
translate incorrect tag types to the correct tag type for the file and
will write them.

There's no need to rip again, just use flac to force a reencoding of he
problematic files.

Cutting and Pasting as well as removing tags you mentioned fixed the
problematic album I had. I am almost ready to try this en masse. Would
there be any danger of using the cut and paste command on a large
number of files at once and losing the tags (1000s)? I am assuming if I
complete that operation immediately without interruption it shouldn't be

As long as you don't lose power during the operation everything should
be fine. Just do a test on a track to see if artwork is also
reinstated. If not run an action to save the artwork to folder.jpg then
do the cut and paste. If it gives you any comfort I've run a cut and
paste on over 10,000 files in a single operation.

It just occurred to me that in puddletag you could add __tag to the
columns in the main view and then sort by this column to identify files
with multiple tag types. This way you can run the cut and paste only on
the offending files.

__tag returns a Comma-Separated list of tags found in file. Eg.
VorbisComment, ID3v2.4, ID3v1.1

Yes that column change does work.
Here is another album I ripped tonight using Rubyripper with the only
tag change through Puddletag (added comment and changed genre which was
blank). The first 3 songs display incorrectly by file name and the next
33 (double CD album) display correctly. I did not touch the disc with
Tagscanner.
Have to say I am pretty fed up.
The Tag Type column you suggested displays VorbisComment on all
tracks no indication of ID 3 or APE.

I apologize if I seem pissed off. It is in no way directed at anyone
helping me I am just totally lost on this issue.

Perhaps rubyRipper is where the issue lies - it could be that it's
tagging doesn't fully comply re how it writes tags - never used it so
can't comment. On a positive note at least you know how to fix the
issue for existing albums and you can just run newly ripped albums
through puddletag's masstagger using musicbrainz and/or discogs as
sources.

Ok, I tried removing the Fingerprint and analysis tags through MP3Tag

resaving the album tags track by track. When I turned on my computer
this morning the tracks all played and displayed correctly. For a little
while that is. As soon as I changed tracks to another album and then
went back to the affected tracks they displayed incorrectly again. I
think there are a number of tracks that are acting this way in my

I am not sure how to tell what codeset I am using.

Have you compared what tags are present for files that are working vs.
those that aren't? An extended tag may be present in one case but not
the other.

You mentioned earlier that files will be fixed for a while then they
won't be fixed. Could it be that playing a file in one of your other
media players is causing the issues?

For instance, I had an old media player that would try to auto-rate its
music and write those ratings to the tags. I'm throwing ideas out there
as it sounds like it isn't something happening due to your initial
ripping and tagging process but later on. It could include the LMS,
but it sounds unusual, unless one of the plugins is doing something.

Have you tried to perhaps disable all your LMS plugins and apps? You
could then enable plugins one by one and see whether they are causing
your problems. I'd go after the ones that are the most likely to write

An easy way to test whether some other software is actually modifying
the tags is to fix a problem track and then set it to read-only
(chmod 444 foo.flac). Then go about business as usual. If it becomes
unfixed, then either there's a tag somewhere that you're not seeing
or there is something else going on in your setup that exposes a bug in
the way LMS presents the metadata.

Rarely use other media players other than Squeezeplay. But perhaps it
is possible that Squeezeplay is the culprit. I compiled it using the
information at this site
http://www.jfwhome.com/2009/11/22/compiling-squeezeplay-on-linux-ubuntu-amd64/

emalvick;688400 Wrote:

could then enable plugins one by one and see whether they are causing
your problems. I'd go after the ones that are the most likely to write
tags or even change your display.

I just tried disabling all my plugins at once (3rd Party). At first it
looked promising as the tracks finally appeared correct. I rebooted the
computer and back to square one with file names appearing instead of tag
titles

do you compile your own server as well?

this is def one of the strangest issues i have read about with SB
stuff.

if resaving the tags makes it work for a while, then it reverts, i am
absolutely baffled. have you tried using the cache clearing cleanup
scripts?

i would suggest using stock server/sp combos, that logitech compiled,
and see if that fixes things.

i also would track all the affected files, and see if its always the
same ones, and i would try making them read only as aubuti said.

whatever it is, it does seem to be unique to you and your setup, so i
think it must be something about your environment. i'd really love to
get to the bottom of it though!

Firstly ensure all file permissions are what they should be - there's a
recent post in the Linux forum addressing this with a simple command
line
Use puddletag - there is no better tagger out there ;-)
Check that it is configured NOT to preserve file date/ timestamps or
alternatively be prepared to do a clear and rescan under LMS.
Load entire library into puddletag, select all files
Select remove all id3 tags and remove all ape tags
Rescan your library

I just want to comment that I followed the wiki instructions at

Here's the permissions thread:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92526

What you're experiencing can in my view only result from having
multiple tag types in a file, or a corrupted metadata header. You can
confidently follow what I said above, then do a rescan. For any
remaining problematic files I'd suggest the header is corrupt and I'd
have FLAC rewrite the FLAC file, or isolate the albums in question,
remove all tags and have puddletag's masstagger retag them for you.

I'm leaning to corrupted headers hence the filename.flac which is what
LMS does if it cannot read tags or they're absent. If they were my
tracks I'd isolate the albums in question and run the id3 ape tag
removal followed by a tag cut/paste and rescan. If they're still
problematic then i'd rewrite the FLAC files using FLAC and retag.

Finger print and analyzis is MIP tags and should be ok ?

In for example puddle tag or mp3tag there is an extended tag
dialaogthat show all tags in a file and you can add new columns to, to
see any tag.

More important is if the files have multiple tag formats written to
them, they should not as there could be conflicting info . Mp3tag or
puddle tag can show this to.

the minority of albums that are affected only have one or two songs

presence of ID3vX tags. You responded that the tracks had Vorbis tags

_also_ have ID3 tags. Have you checked to be sure there aren't any
ID3vX tags as well on those tracks?

If you're 100% sure there are no ID3vX tags in there, then maybe you're
encountering the bug ('Bug 17863'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17863)) that was uncovered
later on in 'the thread you referenced'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89021)? Beyond that,
I'm stumped.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Songs showing up by filename not song

2012-02-01 Thread SlimChances

I am not certain there are no ID3 tags but here is a screenshot of an
album I ripped years ago with EAC under Windows XP (see screenshot).
The entire album was tagged automatically in whole not in part,if I
made any changes such as changing genre tags it was to the whole
album(shows tag as VORBIS). Now look at the other two images; the first
image shows the track 1 displayed incorrectly by file name and track and
the second image shows the 2nd track displayed correctly by tag name.
Now the last image shows the first song playing under VLC and the tag
is displayed correctly.

I guess I am just going to assume that my music is not corrupt either
in the tags or flac

2012-02-01 Thread aubuti

Are you certain that Tagscanner will report multiple tag types (eg,
Vorbis and ID3vX) if they exist? If so, then I suppose your first
screenshot demonstrates that you only have Vorbis tags. If not, then I
suggest you load the problem files in a tagger that definitely does
report multiple tag types, such as mp3tag. You can do it in Windows or
in Ubuntu under Wine. Instructions for displaying all tag types, and
deleting unwanted tag types, are here:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Mp3tag#Displaying_All_Tags_Present_In_the_File

There is certainly something weird going on with the web ui display and
how it appears to be displaying different sets of tags for different
tracks. Could you post a screenshot of those same tracks loaded in
Tagscanner, but one that shows the tag contents for the tags you are
trying to display (TRACKNUM, TITLE, ARTIST, ALBUM, YEAR, and BITRATE)
as well as the filename?

Finally, do you get the same behavior for tracks queued on regular SBs,
as opposed to SqueezePlay?

Fwiw, I like a lot of the CJs' music too.

Same behaviour in players (SB Classic) as Squeezeplay. In fact it will
appear correct in Squeezeplay after resaving in the tagscanner and when
I play it in SB Classic it turns back to file name and likewise then in
Squeezeplay. I found the software you recommended quite useful but I
don't see any indication of Tags other than FLAC(used instructions on
WIKI to make column with other tags (see image)

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Songs showing up by filename not song

2012-02-01 Thread aubuti

It's hard to read the screenshot, but as far as I can tell the tags do
look okay.

It's possible that there's a bug in LMS, but there are a lot of us
running LMS on Ubuntu and its cousins (I use debian). So far no one
else has reported this, and we haven't figured out yet what may be
unique about your library that would cause this to occur, so we can't
replicate the bug.

One more thing and then I'm pretty sure I'm out of ideas. It could be
that your server.prefs file is corrupted. You could try stopping LMS
and then deleting the server.prefs file. When you restart LMS it will
create a new server.prefs with the default settings. The downside of
this is that (a) you will have to re-do all your settings, and (b)
there is absolutely no guarantee it will solve your problem. The upside
is that it's...something.

Good luck.
Here's a quick tip for remembering your settings: screenshots. Lots of
them.

EDIT: And if you only zap server.prefs you don't need to worry about
your plugins, because those prefs are kept in separate files specific
to each plugin.

I have a library of 20,000 tracks this is not really feasible. I was
looking for either a solution at the LMS server level or if the tags
are in fact suspect a way of repairing en masse. However given that 3
tagging programs including MP3tag and 2 Linux music players seem to
report no issue with the tags I suspect it has something to do with my
LMS server or the way it is set up. I suppose it is possible that one
of my plugins may be causing the issue.

I then played the track on SB Classic and as before it appeared as 4.
04 - Darkness.flac. I went back to Squeezeplay and sure enough it had
reverted to file name preceded by track #

Agreed. I'm not familiar with Tagscanner, but it certainly seems that
either it's not writing the tags you intend, or somehow it's not saving
them.

What I would do is try a different editor. Next time you get a problem
case like this, try doing the edits with puddletag, save, and do a full
clear and rescan and see what happens.

Re: [SlimDevices: Ripping] Songs showing up by filename not song

2012-01-31 Thread SlimChances

OK two recans (complete) and one save of tags prior to rescanning.
I would like to believe that the problem is Tagscanner running under
WINE but the same issue arises with Puddletag that runs natively under
Ubuntu.
One observation though: The tags appear correct in both Tagging
programs( before and after saving), re-saving sometimes fixes the issue
but it just reverts to the wrong display (on both web Interface and
players) later. Also if I play the affected tracks on a media player
such as Guayadeque or VLC tags are displayed correctly. It only appears
to be wrong in LMS. So I guess I could reinstall LMS 7.7.1 but I had
another thread about SBS 7.5.1 not displaying Comments correctly and I
have to think this is the same problem.
I thought perhaps this was a problem with the interface I was using so
I changed that from TRACKNUM. TITLE - ARTIST - ALBUM - YEAR - BITRATE
to TRACKNUM. ARTIST - TITLE doesn't seem to correct matters.
This is happening with music that has been on the system for a year or
more and music that is brand new and not all the tracks in an album
behave that way. It is happening with ripped music from CD and
downloaded music. Because it only seems to happen with LMS/SBS and not
my tagging software or media players I have to think the problem is
there not the tagging software.

It sounds like your tags might have been corrupt. I doubt it is your
tagging software. It is just often that the tagging software is where
you can find out about it, or solve it. Solving it is often as simple
as resaving tags as you are finding. It could be the LMS software or
any other software you might use. Any player software could write
tags. I'm not sure the LMS does, but any plugin could. I really don't
know.

By design, LMS does not write tags, or anything else, in the music
library except for playlists. And if you have your permissions set
properly, LMS or plugins could never write anything to your music files
because user squeezeboxserver should have read-only access to the
library.

Among music players in the Windows world it is very common for player
software to change tags even when not asked. I've seen it happen with
Windows Media Player (blech) and older versions of foobar2000. I
haven't run into that on Linux players, but then I haven't used many of
those (Songbird and xmms only).

What you say about permissions is true, but how many people go to that
step? File security in Windows is such a hassle, that I don't even
bother with it. Regular back-ups work better for me that file
security. Although I guess that file security is much better in Linux
