Further to this I am getting the following in the Rivendell log.

May 11 15:02:04 playback1 ripcd: GPI 0:8 ON
May 11 15:02:05 playback1 ripcd: GPI 0:8 OFF

I have the USB connected and working on RDGPIMON as it shows channel 8 on and
off when I move the fader. The GPIO is set up in RD to trigger two carts (On =
050001 Off = 050002) and these show in RDGPIMON as green and red beneath
channel 8.

If I run the two carts from the cart panel they work correctly sending an IP
message to my Mic lIve light. However, if I use my fader switch the carts are
not triggered even though RDGPIMON suggests that they should be.

Does anyone have any idea what may not be working correctly or what I can do to
fault find it in greater detail.

To summarise, the switch and the USB input seem to work fine but RDD does not
trigger the configured carts.

Many thanks

Re: [RDD] Jack audio stopped feeding from RD

2022-05-08 Thread Mike Cox
Sorted!
I forgot that Drew originally setup a small script that runs to patch the audio
through from RDD to Jack. That file was accidentally deleted by a user so the
patch wasn't being carried out.
Thanks all

Morning all. It's been a while since I've had to ask for help.

I have a server running on the standard install and it's been running for
several years with no problems thanks To Drew's help setting it up.

The format is RD -> Jack -> Glass Commander -> My Streaming server.

After a recent power cut the server restarted and there is no audio appearing
in Glass Commander.

RD is running and playing audio.

Jack appears to be running (started by RD) as if I try to run it again it says
it already exists.

Glass Commander starts OK and connects to our streaming server but no audio
showing on the audio bars.

Settings in RD admin show that Airplay should be outputting to Jack correctly.

Any pointers to where I can start fault finding this please?

Many thanks

Probably not, but is there something like Rivendell to automate play out of
video content? The city has asked us about taking over the Cable Access
channel. I know the automation system they have now plays Sony video carts. It
sounds like they don't have money to spend to update system and I don't want to
takeover a mechanical nightmare. A nice big RAID array of videos would work
nicely but it needs some scheduler, like Rivendell has.

Re: [RDD] Glasscoder errors

2020-07-15 Thread Mike Cox
For info I have given up running Glasscoder on the VM that we are using for our
station. I have installed it on a dedicated physical machine and it seems to be
stable using GlassCommander.

The problems I was getting must be something to do with it being on a VM
instead of a physical machine.

Thanks Lorne
Our streaming server uses LS built into Azuracast. I'm not sure about setting

As I come from Ubuntu land I'm more used to things just working :)

Drew has helped guide me with Jack and that works nicely. Glasscoder did work
nicely but seems to crash a lot.

I'll see if I can work out how to get LS working.

Thanks for your help.

Mike,

Check out Liquidsoap. It works extremely well, has been my go-to
streaming client for years.

I like it because in addition to just streaming, you can have it do
processing on the fly. It can also generate multiple streams using
different codecs and bitrates all at the same time. As an example I
have one station that streams the following bitrates, all coming from a
single instance of Liquidsoap.

32k AAC
64K AAC
96K AAC
96K MP3
128K AAC
128K MP3
192K AAC
192K MP3
256K AAC
256K MP3
320K AAC
320K MP3

Hi all

RDD 3.4.0 Database 317

I'm trying to run Glasscoder by starting it in the Rivendell Jack
settings. It starts and works as expected which is great.

Unfortunately it crashes after a while (half an hour or so). I have run
it manually form the CLI to see what is thrown and I get the following
error.

glasscoder: quantize.c:2044: CBR_iteration_loop: Assertion
`cod_info->part2_3_length <= 4095' failed.

Aborted

The command I'm using to run it is:

glasscoder --server-type=shout2
--server-url=https://:8025
--server-auth=: --audio-format=mp3
--audio-samplerate=48000 --audio-channels=2 --audio-bitrate=128
--audio-device=jack --jack-gain=5

I got this command from trying it with Glassgui first.

Has anyone any idea what is causing the above crash or where I can look

Hi Guys

Just trying to find out what the Evergreen setting means in cuts.
There is only one reference to the word in the Rivendell Operations
Guide which seems to assume that I know what it means.

"GREEN – Event will play an Evergreen"

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Interesting, looks like the Mac on which I write this email changes the
straight single quote to a curly one in this font. I just realized this as I
entered it again here. So this was not likely the problem.

So I opened up a terminal but neglected to do “su -“ and was therefore logged
in as rd. I entered
echo "SET PASSWORD FOR root@localhost = PASSWORD('mylousypassword');" | mysql
-u root
and I received command prompt indicating the command was successful.

But am I not supposed to be root to execute this command? I changed to root,
entered the same command, now I get
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user ‘root’@‘localhost’ (using password:
NO)

Thanks

Verify your quotes are correct. In the command you pasted, the single quote in

The command shell thinks you are entering a long string that needs more than
one line, and is prompting you to enter more text.

To get out of the prompt, press Control-C. Or close the window. Both will
work .

I named the host simonserver, so in the terminal I'm logged in as
root@simonserver.

The last instruction in Final Steps is baffling to me.
4. Set the MariaDB administrator password with the following command

echo "SET PASSWORD FOR root@localhost = PASSWORD('pwd');" | mysql -u root

I entered echo "SET PASSWORD FOR root@simonserver = PASSWORD(‘k258bq');" |

but now the Terminal just displays the > below my entry. I must have
misunderstood.

What am I doing wrong?

The instructions are really good, but I’m misreading something.

would everyone feel about the log automatically scrolling down the current hour

Re: [RDD] RivenCloud

2020-03-05 Thread Mike Cox
Hi James

We put everything we can in the cloud for the similar reason you give not to!

Our local providers are very good and we have fibre to the office which is up
most of the time. Our cloud hosts though are up almost permanently. This is why
we run our RD in the cloud so that it is always on even if we are off.

Regarding security, we lock each server down using iptables so that the only
access is from the other servers in the cluster or from our office. We use VNC
over an SSH tunnel to operate the RD desktops and it works well. As they are
running on cloud droplets, backups are easy as we can clone each entire
workstation whenever we like and spin up replacements as needed.

To give you an example I can spin up an RD studio for a special event in a very
short time (sub 30 minutes) complete with setting up the streaming to our cloud
hosted streaming server.

The cloud is the future although, of course, there is no cloud, it's just
someone else's computer!

Why couldn’t instances of Rivendell running on Amazon AWS become a station’s
primary automation system? No hardware to maintain and the system would be just
as accessible as a box in the next room, given the ease of VNC connections.

From the transmitter site’s perspective, everything is already in some cloud.
That’s whether the STL connection is via microwave, fiber, or DSL. RivenCloud
could send a high-quality stream directly to the transmitter as easily as it
would simultaneously feed a MP3/AAC version to the station’s streaming provider.

Now, talk like this strikes terror into the hearts of red-blooded engineers.
What happens when the ‘net connection goes down on Christmas Eve when there’s
nary an IT person from one’s university or cloud provider to be found? How do
we deal with inevitable backhoe fades? And how could we possibly threaten
cranky machines by brandishing a bright orange mallet in front of it, which
sometimes seems to work, psychologically at least. (Need to be careful as
machines become sentient; threatening didn’t work so well with HAL.)

Might in-the-cloud Rivendell instances be doable? Is this already being done?

We run a main server with RD and audio on it for log production. Attached to

The two studios stream using Jack and Glasscoder (thanks to Drew's help).

This will be a bit dicey with Rivendell if you're running version 3.X. First,
make sure to check /etc/rd.conf for the settings RnRmlOwner and RnRmlGroup.
Your RN commands will be run as that user/group combination and will thus need
access to your X Windows session. The default (rivendell/rivendell) probably
does not have that access. Consider using either xauth(1) or xhost(1) to grant
the user "rivendell" access to X Windows sessions owned by the user as which
you're logged in (probably "rd" if you did a "by-the-book" install).

Hope this helps!

[RDD] Network cluster problem

2020-02-15 Thread Mike Cox
I've got an interesting problem I could do with some pointers on.

I have a Centos 7 standard installation which works fine. I have created a
second host in RDAdmin on it and have now built a Mint PC and installed RD as
per http://www.radiotools.uk/linux-rivendell-3.2.0.html.

The new Mint server can see the /var/snd directory on the main server and
contents in the file manager. RD can connect to the MySQL server on the main
server as I can run RDAdmin and edit both hosts. I can also access the remote
DB using mysql on the command line.

However, when I run RDLibrary I cannot see any cuts listed. I'm not sure what
I'm, missing but has anyone got any ideas where to start looking?

If you're interested why I've chosen to use Mint instead of Centos for the 2nd
workstation, it's because I can't find various bits of software that I need
which will run on Centos. Ideally I would prefer to use Centos as it's so easy
to install RD on.

Many thanks

I actually prefer this workflow (import audio tracks into a "staging" group,
then manually move to MUSIC [or wherever]). It gives the "music director" a
chance to fine-tune markers (especially Segue), double check metadata, and
give one final check for airplay suitability. Importing directly into MUSIC
makes all this a bit more ... I guess, dicey?

But I am a technician who favors "database cleanliness" over lots of other
things, so maybe I'm not the best judge of day-to-day radio station workflows.

Sorry Fred. Back now.

I'm streaming using Shoucast v1 into Azuracast which, I believe, uses
liquidsoap. It connects fine and runs for some time then just drops after an
apparently random time.

If I start up GlassGui again it works fine until the next time.

Subject: [RDD] GlassPlayer v0.9.0

On behalf of the Rivendell audio community, I’m pleased to announce the initial
beta release of GlassPlayer, a minimalist live audio player. that is available
under the GNU Public License v2.

From the README file:
*** snip snip ***
GlassPlayer is a minimalist audio stream player for IceCast and Shoutcast
streaming servers as well as HLS streams. It supports the following audio
output types:

  Advanced Linux Sound Architeture (ALSA)
  File Streaming (FILE)
  JACK Audio Connection Kit (JACK)
  Standard Output (STDOUT)
  Windows Multimedia Extensions (MME)

The base GlassPlayer component utilizes no configuration files or
GUI interface whatsoever; with the 'user interface' consisting entirely of
the command-line invocation. As such, it is well suited for use cases where
the player is completely driven by an external system or script.

The following audio codecs are supported:

   OggOpus
   OggVorbis
   MPEG-1/2 Layer 2 ('MP2')
   MPEG-1/2 Layer 3 ('MP3')
MPEG-4 Advanced Audio Coding, High Efficiency Profile ('HE-AAC+')
*** snip snip ***

Further information, including full source code, is available at
https://github.com/RadioFreeAsia/GlassPlayer.

Cheers!

Subject: [RDD] Using /var/snd over NFS

Hello,

Is anyone using /var/snd over NFS for the server side in a server/client setup?
We have NFS in use for /var/snd for all of the clients
but the disk location of /var/snd is physically in the same machine as the
Rivendell server itself.

The problem is that we need disk space, lots of it, to store all of the music -
thousands of CDs that need to be ripped. I'd like to
deploy a virtual machine running CentOS as the Rivendell server and then create
an NFS-shared directory on a NAS that would be mounted
remotely (in the same LAN) as /var/snd on the Rivendell server. Maybe that
leads to another issue: What are the practical limitations
of the built-in music scheduler in handling that much music? Should we limit
the amount of schedule-eligible music?

I've gathered from the mailing list archive that there have been mixed results
for this scenario.

There are known issues with PyPAD on Rivendell v3.0.2. You’ll want to update to
the latest (v3.2.0 as of this writing).

Re: [RDD] pypad shows red

2020-01-17 Thread Mike Cox
Hi Drew

It seems like a great way of setting up Now and Next notifications and was easy
to set up so that's good news!

1. Are they updating the same server?
Yes

2. Are they updating different mount points?
No. Both the same mount point but I've only got one of the servers broadcasting
so only one should be sending updates.

3. Is there a limit in the number of sources for the server that is being
exceeded?
Don't think so as it works fine now I've restarted Rivendell

4. " has switched to red" Were both working at one point and one stopped for
not discernible reason or did one work from the start and one fail from the
start?
Yes. They have both been working fine since last night when I built them so
that's about 16 hours or so.

5. Which one is working and which one is not? (in relation to which went
through the "name change")
Not sure on this one as I can't remember which server I created and which on I
cloned. It's an agee thing :)

6.If you copy the swap the config details between them (let each try and
update the other's "server") does the problem swap "boxes"?
As they are both updating the same endpoint on the same server I don't think
this is relevant although I did try copying the working config to the dead
server and simply changing the username.

For info, both RD servers are on Proxmox VM instances (CENTOS7). The streaming
server is Azuracast on a digital ocean droplet.

Re: [RDD] Sending Now and Next data to Azuracast

2020-01-14 Thread Mike Cox
I cracked it just after I sent my message.

For the benefit of anyone else, even though Azuracast is not a Shoutcast
server you need to select the Shoutcast template in Pypad and enter
details as follows:

[Shoutcast1]

Password=username:password

Hostname=streaming.server.com

Tcpport=8015

FormatString=%20-%20%t

MasterLog=Yes

Aux1Log=Yes

Basically you're using exatcly the same details that you use to stream
to the server, to send the data.
Hope this helps someone.

[RDD] Sending Now and Next data to Azuracast

2020-01-14 Thread Mike Cox
Hi all

RD 3.2 and I'm trying to send Now and Next data to Azuracast which uses
an Icecast server. However, it looks like we cannot access the Icecast
server directly but need to go through Azuracast to show now and next data.

I've had a play with the Pypad configs and they look quite simple but I
cannot work out how to set them up for Azuracast.

Anyone had any joy with this?

Hi Drew
I've been getting somewhere but am now struggling with glasscoder.
I have RD to Jack working and i can route from RD to soundcard and from RD to
GC. This is according to qjackctl and also jack_lsp.

1 problem is that I cannot get GC to connect with my icecast server. It keeps
saying the server retirned unrecognized response. I have my server set as type
= icecast2
Url=https://stream.rosettaradio.co.uk:8015/
Auth = my password

It seems strange to me to put https before the url but it rejects it if I don't
put that in.

2. I get no audio showing in Glass Gui even though qjackctl says they are
connected.

Not sure what to try next so any help would be appreciated.

Mike,

Hopefully Drew can help you out. The big trick with Jack is that Jack
and all of the clients interacting with Jack need to be running as the
same user. The Rivendell daemons on a standard setup run as root, so in
order for Jack to be able to see Rivendell when you have Rivendell start
jack, it'll start as root - the same user that the daemons run as.

The issue is when you're running your other Jack clients (BUTT, Darkice,
etc) they're probably being run as the logged in user, so they won't see
Jack running.

In the Rivendell Jack settings under RDAdmin --> Hosts --> Jack settings
there's the option to start up additional Jack clients. This is what
you'll want to use to start your clients - that way Jack, Rivendell, and
all the clients will be started as the same user, and they should all be
able to see each other.

Then build a macro to create connections between all your jack
inputs/outputs.

connect the output of RD to the input of the streamer using Jack. This is the
bit I cannot get to work.

Apart from the difficulty of installing the various clients (missing
dependencies, failing to recognise Jack, etc), I cannot work out how to get
Jack to work between the devices. The Jack outputs now show in RD under Audio
Resources (24 inputs / 24 outputs). I can configure the outputs in RDAdmin
Configure > RDAirplay so that bit looks OK.

Each time I try to install a streaming client I cannot work out how to get it
to stream from Jack as it keeps saying things like Jack is not running.

Is there anybody who has produced a clear, step by step guide, to getting a
connection between RD -> Jack -> Darkice / Butt / Ices? I would really
appreciate some help as I've been working on this for two weeks and I'm getting
so frustrated.

Thanks a lot.

Mike

[RDD] Jack connection how to needed

2020-01-10 Thread Mike Cox
Hi all

I'm having real problems trying to get my setup working with Jack. I've read
hundreds of "How to" posts and tried installing loads of different software but
I'm getting nowhere and could really do with some help. I have a fair bit of
experience with RD but used as an analogue output and not using Jack.

I have installed RD 3.2 on a Centos 7 laptop. It works nicely and I've been
able to restore my database and audio onto the laptop from another machine.

I've tried installing Ices, Butt and Darkice to use as a streamer so that I can
connect the output of RD to the input of the streamer using Jack. This is the
bit I cannot get to work.
