[RollTideFan] Coach Gottfried takes team to UCLA in game that honors mentor
http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html_sta ndard.xsl?/base/sports/10076337141166324.xml Gottfried goes back Coach takes team to UCLA in game that honors mentor 12/06/01 STEVE IRVINE News staff writer TUSCALOOSA He was newly married, more than 2,000 miles away from home and paying $650 per month for an efficiency apartment. His monthly stipend at UCLA was $362 per month, his transportation was public and the only person he knew upon arrival in Los Angeles other than his wife was the man who had just hired him to be a graduate assistant for the Bruins. Those were good times for Alabama head men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried. My wife (Elizabeth) and I had a great experience in California, said Gottfried, a Mobile native and Alabama graduate, who spent seven seasons as an assistant coach under Jim Harrick with the first coming in 1988-89. Gottfried left UCLA to become the head coach at Murray State following the Bruins NCAA championship season of 1994-95 and took over at Alabama in 1998. His first time to return to Southern California as Alabama's head coach is Saturday when Gottfried takes the No.16-ranked Crimson Tide to the Anaheim Pond for a p.m. matchup against 20th-ranked UCLA in the Wooden Classic. It's special, first off because it's the Wooden Classic, Gottfried said of the event honoring his mentor John Wooden. You know I was fortunate enough to build a good relationship with Coach Wooden when I was at UCLA. Just to play in that event is going to be fun for me. Gottfried befriended Wooden soon after joining the UCLA coaching staff. Learning the craft from a man who won 885 games overall and 10 NCAA national championships seemed like a good idea. I can remember Coach Harrick told us we were going to go eat breakfast with Coach Wooden one morning, Gottfried said of his first meeting with Wooden. I sat there, watched him eat his pancakes and have syrup on his chin like all the rest of us. I thought `That's John Wooden over there eating pancakes.' Over the next seven years Gottfried spent as much time as he could with Wooden absorbing wisdom about everything from basketball handling youngsters to life's lessons. Every time I went to his house I wanted to tape record in my mind what he would say, said Gottfried, who still chats with Wooden regularly. What developed from the visits was Gottfried adopting Wooden's philosophies as a coach. Watch Alabama practice today and you'll see some of the same practice plans used by Wooden. He preaches John Wooden this and John Wooden that, said Alabama guard Terrance Meade. Gottfried admits that he quotes Wooden so much that often when he begins a statement, the players finish it before he can. But those same players don't really know the full legacy of Wooden. When asked about his knowledge of UCLA's storied past, Alabama center Erwin Dudley mentioned Ed O'Bannon and the 1994-95 NCAA championship team. That was 20 seasons after Wooden retired. Adults couldn't understand why a young player didn't want to go to UCLA, Gottfried said. Kids that we recruited (at UCLA) from say age 10 when they started paying attention to basketball to age 17 didn't watch John Wooden. It's very similar to a football player in our state who hasn't watched Bear Bryant. Gottfried has asked Wooden to speak with the Crimson Tide at the team's hotel either today or Friday. On Saturday, Gottfried will coach against UCLA. But if Gottfried hadn't taken the Murray State job in 1995, he might instead be the head coach at UCLA. Harrick was fired by UCLA athletics director Pete Dalis just 14 days before the 1996 season began. Because the season was set to begin, Steve Lavin, who just two years prior was the No.3 assistant behind Gottfried and Lorenzo Romar, was chosen as the interim coach. Six seasons later Lavin is still the head coach. What if? I get asked that question a lot, Gottfried said. I think in life you gotta go with what happened. I think being at Murray State was a great thing for me as a coach. To be at a place, quite honestly, where the country really wasn't watching and evaluating helped prepare me for this job tremendously. I really feel like the way things have worked out, I'm where I'm supposed to be here at Alabama. GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! Re: [RollTideFan] [Indirectly Bama-related] Ole Miss writing Tide's invitation to Nashville
Hugh, You can set your conditions to judge Watts vs. Zow any way you like, which is exactly what you are doing here. You are only considering the final Win/Loss from Zow's two starts, while narrowing down your look at Watts to the fourth quarters in games WHERE ALABAMA'S DEFENSE PUT ALABAMA BEHIND. Looking at the total picture for Watts and Zow, a knowledgeable football person would take the consistent Watts over the inconsistent Zow every time. Zow looks like Jay Barker one week and Brian Burgdorf the next. The 31 points he put on the board against Auburn were against a defense that quit. Slef or I could have QBed Alabama to 31 points on that day. bill evans Hartselle, AL [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Sat, 1 Dec 2001 16:51:41 -0600 Hugh Wolfgang [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: How exactly is a 2-0 record this year inconsistent? If the team had played with the same intensity and desire in September that it played with in November, Alabama would not be sitting around waiting for the Music City Bowl officials to call - the Tide would be preparing for Florida. Having said that, am I surprised that the team went 6-5? A little, yes. Disappointed? Yes. Devastated? Nope. Boston College will be a tough test for this team, though. A loss could be the beginning of a long off-season. A win, though, would give Bama - no, would CONTINUE - a lot of momentum heading into a VERY tough schedule in 2002. [RollTideFan] Franchione mum on QB
http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html_sta ndard.xsl?/base/sports/10068561117935.xml Franchione mum on QB 11/27/01 STEVE KIRK News staff writer TUSCALOOSA The University of Alabama's starting quarterback won't be determined solely by Tyler Watts' health anymore. Andrew (Zow)'s performance has to be a factor now, first-year Crimson Tide head coach Dennis Franchione said Monday, referring to the fifth-year senior's 22-for-29 passing performance in a 31-7 victory over Auburn on Nov.17. Before the Auburn game, Franchione said Watts would start if he was 100 percent healthy. But that is not the case going into a 6 p.m. Thursday kickoff between the Tide (5-5) and Southern Mississippi (6-3) at Legion Field. Watts, a junior, started the first nine games of the season but hasn't played since pulling a groin muscle in the first quarter of the Mississippi State game Nov.10. Franchione didn't reveal his starter Monday, but he did defend his decision-making concerning a quarterback debate that has surrounded this team for three years. Early in the year Tyler understood the offense far better than Andrew, Franchione said. Andrew has said that and been open about it. And it's true. Tyler always knew where to throw the ball, and he's comprehended the details and nuances of this offense quicker than Andrew. That's basically why Tyler has played. As time has gone on, Andrew has caught up. Some Alabama fans have questioned Franchione's quarterback decisions to this point. Also, some black Alabama fans have claimed in newspaper letters to the editor and on sports talk radio shows that some white Alabama fans don't want a black quarterback, and that Franchione's decisions have been influenced by that. Zow, the school's career record-holder in total yards, plays and three passing categories, said Monday he appreciates the support but he called it a lot of people's opinions. ... The coaches are around us every day and they evaluate us. And I'm not thinking they would jeopardize (the team) by bringing race into their decisions. Franchione has consistently said that the best players play for his football teams, and Zow said he doesn't look at the quarterback competition as a black-white issue. I'm just looking to go out there and play, basically, Zow said. The support I get from anybody is greatly appreciated ... But if it's (based on) race, I think we need to probably look over that and continue to go forward. Zow said he tries not to think about the issue of race. Wherever you go, you're going to have racism or race problems, Zow said. But how I think is, I go out and try to be a quarterback and overlook things like that. Zow agreed with Franchione on Monday. He saidthat he didn't know the offense well early in the season. I've grown to understand it more and better, Zow said. I think I was trying to get to the perfect play throughout the season. Sometimes you're not going to have the perfect play. I believe I started learning that throughout the season. Franchione said, Andrew's performance (against Auburn) is an example of his understanding and how it's grown over the course of time. He might have been ready to do it quicker, but we got into a rhythm with Tyler. But he was ready to do it when he did do it. I know the team has confidence in both of those young men. The coaches have confidence in both of them. If both of them are healthy, it's still a real competitive issue and they'd probably both play. Franchione was secretive about his starting quarterback before the Auburn game, too. Meanwhile, Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville told anyone who would listen that Watts would play and he prepared his team to stop the Watts-led option running attack. Watts didn't play a snap. Whether (the uncertainty) will have as much of an impact on Southern Miss as it appeared to have on the last game remains to be seen, Franchione said. GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Re: [RollTideFan] Cecil Hurt
The ionosphere that AM frequency radio waves bounce off of RISES after the sun sets and pressure from the solar wind is no longer holding it down. Therefore AM stations have a **MUCH** greater range on their signal at night, and a corresponding need for smaller stations to cut power. Re: [RollTideFan] awbrun Prediction
I didn't say anyone was humiliated. What I said was this: the UA-AU game is always much closer than expected. In 1997 AU was as heavily favored as any team has been in the Iron Bowl in my lifetime. UA fans were not optimistic about their chances. Then AU wins on the Scissum fumble and subsequent FG 18-17. What brought this up was Hugh noticing how closely bunched the predictions are. I think that is because anyone who has seen 10-20 or more Iron Bowls knows that they are always close. 9-0 was the 2000 game. bill evans Hartselle, AL [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Thu, 15 Nov 2001 07:40:57 -0600 Devan Orange [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I don't really think we were the ones who were humiliated. [RollTideFan] Tradition? What tradition?
http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/ html_standard.xsl?/base/news/10058193113309.xml Tradition? What tradition? 11/15/01 MIKE BOLTON News staff writer For multitudes of football fans in this state, Alabama-Auburn week will always conjure memories of Bear Bryant and Shug Jordan going toe-to-toe on crisp fall afternoons at Legion Field. But while fans might be convinced such battles will never be forgotten, some players who will take the field Saturday in Auburn have little or no concept of the past. None of the players on the Auburn University team was born when Jordan roamed the sidelines for his final season in 1975. In fact, most had yet to be born when Jordan died on July 17, 1980. The younger players on the University of Alabama squad were not born when Bryant coached his final game in 1982. None was older than 4 when Bryant died six months later. It's been great not only playing against Auburn, but also to learn about the rivalry, said Andrew Zow, the senior quarterback who came off the bench to lead Alabama to victory over Mississippi State last week. Being from Florida, I really don't know much about the history. I still don't know much about Bear Bryant. In Auburn, memorabilia from the well-loved Jordan is common in the athletic complex. Still, Auburn's current players know little about the man who coached the Tigers for 25 years and led them to their only national championship. He must have been a pretty good guy and a good coach because I do know they named a stadium after him, Auburn junior tight end Lorenzo Diamond said. That's about all I know about him. I know about rolling Toomer's Corner and the eagle flying around the stadium, but that's about all I know about Auburn tradition. I go out and play football. I don't worry about tradition. Even Auburn junior offensive lineman Ryan Hockett, a distant relative of Jordan, knows little about him. Wasn't he like one of the most winning coaches around here or something? Hockett asked. I know he's like a legend around here. His picture is all around here. I've seen him mentioned in a couple books. Senior kicker Neal Thomas is one of many Crimson Tide players who know little of Bryant. I've looked into the history a little bit since I've been here, but I really don't know much about it except for the past few years, Thomas said. I don't really have much knowledge of Bear Bryant other than what I've read. Santonio Beard, an Alabama sophomore, admits his knowledge of the rivalry is shallow. About all I know is that Alabama owns the all-time series, he said. Of course, Alabama owns the all-time series against most teams. I do know that 1999 was the last time Auburn lost in Jordan-Hare. I don't go back much farther than that. Auburn tries to teach its players about tradition by bringing in former players and coaches, but head coach Tommy Tuberville admits it's lost on some. Like most kids today, they are more interested in the present and the future than the past, Tuberville said. Auburn athletic director David Housel said it's natural that players from both schools lack a grasp of the past. It's just part of the never-ending march of time, said. You've got to remember that it was 15 years ago that Lawyer Tillman ran the reverse in the Auburn-Alabama game and 16 years ago that Van Tiffin kicked the field goal. It was 30 years ago that Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy. More time has elapsed since Bo Jackson won the Heisman than the period between the time when Pat won it and Bo won it. It's hard for many of us to believe, but Carnell Williams probably doesn't know how he fits into the Auburn running back tradition. For him, Bo Jackson is a historical figure. It's the same thing for Coach Jordan and Coach Bryant. Auburn punter Damon Duval says he has seen Jackson around practice a few times, but doesn't remember him playing. Sorry, Duval said. I wasn't born until 1980. I was a baby when Bo Jackson played. Asked about several landmark games in the Alabama-Auburn series, such as the 1972 contest when Auburn blocked two punts and an extra point to win 17-16, Auburn center Ben Nowland appeared a little embarrassed. Hey man, I grew up in Florida. GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! For your FREE software, visit: http://dl.www.juno.com/get/web/. [RollTideFan] Fortunately for Tide, Zow not a quitter
Nice article about Zow in the morning paper. I expect Watts will start next Saturday, even if he is only 90% healthy. bill evans Hartselle, AL [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/sports/columns/01a.shtml Fortunately for Tide, Zow not a quitter MARK EDWARDS TUSCALOOSA -- When Alabama wins a game, head coach Dennis Franchione usually makes his obligatory Way to go speech to his team before giving out a game ball. But he couldn't wait Saturday. The Crimson Tide head coach skipped all the congratulations, except for the ones he wanted to shower on senior quarterback Andrew Zow. Immediately after Franchione and his assistant coaches herded the players into the locker room following a 24-17 win over Mississippi State on Saturday, he stood in front of the room and began searching the crowd. Where's Andrew Zow? he asked. Where's Andrew Zow? Several teammates pushed Zow to the front of the room with Franchione, who awarded him the first game ball of his college football career. After not playing much all season, Zow led Alabama to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and a come-from-behind victory. After giving the football to Zow, Franchione told the players, You should be proud that he's on your team. Zow smiled and bowed his head as his teammates chanted, Drew, Drew, Drew. Franchione may have enjoyed this moment as much as any this season. He got to reward someone who not only helped win a game but also smoothed the way for the Franchione regime this season. Zow, a senior, started for three years under former head coach Mike DuBose, but when Franchione arrived after last season, junior Tyler Watts proved he was better. Watts learned the offense more precisely than Zow and showed an ability to play mistake-free and keep Alabama out of negative-yardage plays -- two attributes Franchione values heavily. Still, even though Watts won the job fair and square, Franchione couldn't help but wonder how Zow would handle the demotion. As it turned out, he didn't need to worry. Zow continued to display the same enthusiasm and leadership that he did when he started. He showed he was willing to follow the new coach, and plenty of his friends on the team followed his example. He's never sat on the sideline saying he was ticked off at not getting to play, said senior receiver Jason McAddley, who was Zow's roommate for 2½ years. He's always into the game, and if he sees something he thinks might help, he'll come up and say something. He's supportive of Tyler and the whole team. Zow got his chance Saturday because Watts suffered an injured groin muscle in his left leg in the opening quarter. He left the game and never returned, even though he stayed on the sideline dressed in his uniform. Afterward, Watts walked off the field, limping badly. He left the locker room riding the back of a golf cart driven by an Alabama trainer. Franchione doesn't like to discuss injuries publicly. So when a reporter asked about Watts' status for this week's Auburn game, he smiled and answered, Don't ask me that. Pressed, Franchione added, He'll be ready to play next week. He also said that Watts could've played again Saturday if needed, although that seems a little far-fetched. Watts didn't appear ready to play anytime soon. So who knows if Zow will have more chances for glory? It might be nice to see him get at least one more chance, though. After throwing for 157 yards Saturday, he is only 17 behind former All-American Jay Barker on Alabama's all-time passing yards list. Zow said he would love to have that record, but then he smiled and added, I'm not going to cry about it if I don't get it. GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Tuberville goes for it ALL the time. A lot of those times he fails. He does give opposing coaches something to think about, that is for sure. How many teams run the sweep as a standard play out of their punt formation? Opposing teams have to prepare for that stuff. Long.story.short: I hate it when it fails, but I understand why he does it so often. The specific time you were thinking about I was saying 'GO!'. [RollTideFan] BPH Game Preview
http://www.postherald.com/ba111001.shtml One final chance Tide, seniors have no breathing room By Greg Wallace BIRMINGHAM POST-HERALD TUSCALOOSA When Jason McAddley, Freddie Milons, and the rest of their senior classmates entrusted their careers to the University of Alabama one cold February afternoon, they surely had vivid dreams of roaring crowds and a rousing sendoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium as revered football legends on this day, their last in the Crimson Tide's true home. If you had suggested they'd be fighting for their postseason lives and trying to win just their fourth home game in two seasons, they'd have dismissed you as crazy, foolish, or an Auburn fan. But as Alabama (3-5, 2-4 SEC) prepares to face Mississippi State (2-5, 1-4 SEC) at 11:30 a.m. today, these are the stinging realities: Today's loser will be eliminated from postseason play, and if Alabama falls, it will clinch its first consecutive losing seasons since 1955-57. Furthermore, the Tide has won just three of its past seven games in Bryant-Denny Stadium. All of which has McAddley flustered and searching for solutions. I think we've played well, he said. We've gotten the worst of circumstances. Sometimes the record doesn't show how good a team is. Our record is lot better than it shows. But we go out on game day, and it doesn't happen. It's like, 'What are we doing wrong?' Four consecutive SEC losses including three games where Alabama blew a fourth-quarter lead have pushed the Tide to the edge of bowl elimination. To qualify for a bowl game, Alabama must win its last three games today, at Auburn, and against Southern Miss Nov. 29 at Legion Field and hope a bowl committee deems it worthy. Even with three victories, it is possible Alabama won't qualify for one of the seven SEC bowl slots and will have to hope for an at-large bid. No room for error; every game is a must. Even if we win it, the next game's still going to be a sudden-death match for a bowl or no bowl, McAddley said. We have to win out if we want to go to a bowl. This week's big in that aspect, just like the next week will be big, and the week after that will be big. Mississippi State provides the perfect remedy; after beating Memphis in the season opener, the Bulldogs lost five consecutive before rallying past SEC patsy Kentucky last week. Four-year starting quarterback Wayne Madkin has struggled, and was pulled at halftime last week, watching sophomore Kevin Fant rally the ÃDogs to victory. MSU Coach Jackie Sherrill says the two will split time today, but the starter is unknown. Injuries in the Bulldogs' offensive line and to star tailback Dicenzo Miller have turned the MSU run attack from strength to liability. Overall, MSU averages only 125 yards on the ground, 11th in the SEC, and its scoring offense is last in the nation at 12 ppg. Momentum careened out of Sherrill's control, with the ebb a 21-9 homecoming loss to I-A newcomer Troy State. After you look at all of our circumstances this season and the way certain things have happened, it's not tough to believe that we are entering this game fighting for our postseason lives, he said. A lot of people like to immediately point to coaching. But there has just been things we couldn't control happen to this team. Expect MSU, as usual, to pound the ball at Alabama's defensive front, which would be a relief to Alabama defensive coordinator Carl Torbush, whose job security became questionable this week after LSU scorched his defense for 611 yards, an Alabama-worst. MSU averages only 195 yards per game passing. If Sherrill steps out of character and lets his quarterbacks heave it, the secondary which gave up 528 passing yards last week must show improvement. The key for us is making sure that we put those guys in the very, very best position to have a chance to be successful, Torbush said. And then when we do, they have to tackle well and make some plays. The secondary's struggles have been blamed on youth, a common trait on this team. Of the 22 seniors making their Bryant-Denny farewell today, only McAddley, Milons, Terry Jones Jr., and Neal Thomas will start, and few others have lent significant contributions. Alabama Coach Dennis Franchione said they won't know what they had until it is gone. It's a hard time young men have at this age, he said. You have to lose what you have to appreciate it. We talk lot about that. Enjoying four years, enjoying each game, enjoying the grind because it won't always be there. Milons isn't concerned with a home finale; he just wants the next two weeks to matter. A win would mean so much to me, he said. To the players, to the whole program, to get a win. Get over the hump. All I know is wins. I don't want to make a habit of losing. Alabama scouting report WHO: Alabama (3-5, 2-4 SEC) vs. Mississippi State (2-5, 1-4 SEC). ALL EYES ON: Alabama receiver Freddie Milons. This is Milons' Bryant-Denny farewell, and he has plenty of

The U.S. attorney's office in Birmingham charged 46-year-old Richard D. Price with attempting to board an aircraft with a concealed weapon. The charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Price also faces state misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and violating the state firearms act. Price's Oct. 25 arrest came as airports and airlines heightened security after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. Price appeared before a magistrate Thursday afternoon with his attorney, Richard Jaffe, before being released on a $500 unsecured bond. The magistrate gave Price a general order not to possess any weapons while out on bond and also ordered Price to undergo mental health treatment. Court papers said Price acknowledged when questioned that he attempted to board the plane with the weapons because he did not believe that the airline had provided adequate security. In an interview with The Birmingham News, Price, who has been dismissed from his medical resident's position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said that when he ordered his ticket to Seattle from Delta Airlines by phone, he asked what guarantee there was for his and other passengers' safety. He said the answer did not satisfy his concerns. Jaffe described Price as well-meaning. The U.S. attorney has no choice but to take all these cases seriously and I'm glad they are, Jaffe said. I think in the end when all of the information surfaces, I think that Dr. Price's true well-meaning intentions will be clear and apparent. Price checked in at the ticket counter and attempted to pass through the security checkpoint to the gate area, when security detected the outline of a handgun in his carry-on bag through an X-ray image, according to an affidavit prepared by FBI special agent Mark Sawyer . Birmingham police asked Price where the gun was and Price directed officers to a package wrapped like a Christmas gift, according to the affidavit. Inside was a peanut can that held a loaded .22-caliber gun wrapped inside two $20 bills, placed inside a clear plastic bag and covered with peanuts, court papers said. Authorities said Price also told police there was a switchblade knife in the shaving kit that was wrapped in foil, apparently to blend in with medical instruments found nearby within the bag. Security also found that the cane Price used contained a steel 18-inch sword. GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! Jeff, I am going to cross post something that I posted to AU-Sports to answer why people like to talk about UA. - - Forwarded message -- From: William H Evans [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 20:27:53 -0500 Subject: Re: [aus] Another Meltdown on TI Since you haven't been around that long, I'll tell you that actually I have pretty much been in a minority amongst Auburn people in attempting to maintain a Bama-neutral stance in watching their games. I have been that way since 1997 when I noticed the bammers in my family took a game played by 18-22 year old boy's *WAY* too seriously. I couldn't stand to pull against them week after week and hear them bitch and moan all the next week so I stopped. BTW - you didn't say whether you pulled for UA or UT today. Wouldn't that make the game so much more meaningful? - As much as it might pain me to say this, I am going to say it: Auburn people, like most people (maybe 98% of the people I have met of all teams fans) like to revel in the misfortunes of others. In case you haven't noticed, there is a *LOT* of this in sports. ($1 to Bill Buckner) ($1 to Al Downing) ($1 to the Buffalo Bills) I could come up with examples of this all night. Luckily, this mostly is contained to the part of the human experience we call 'sports'. You don't see people dancing around saying The bank foreclosed on your house, the bank foreclosed on your house.. That kind of stuff goes on all the time in sports. But the point is, that due to the baser human impulses to talk about the other guys and how screwed up they are, and a few extremely 'thread worthy' news items coming out of Tuscaloosa the past 18 months, and I'll admit that we have talked about UA a whole lot the past 18 months. Before the internet was around this was called 'gossip'. I still don't think it was anywhere near 10%-15% of the total year's traffic, much less half of the sports related traffic. You see, I was exaggerating about that 'cat' thread. We actually had 125 messages that day about Terry Bowden in addition to that 'cat' thread. But I see your point, those Terry Bowden posts weren't sports related either. If we are going to go that route, couldn't we say that the CMD/Little Debbie posts and UA-NCAA posts weren't sports related either? Auburn people pull against Alabama, and vice-versa. It's expected. When they get their wish, they celebrate. It's human. I will remind you that a very high percentage of the posts on RTF last week were 'Siie Pig!'. It happens, it's no big deal, and you should get used to it. BTW - what I said in the post above was true. And I believe you have heard me say that the 1997 Iron Bowl was what lead me to at least *attempt* to see where I personally was acting this way. I no longer really pull against Bama like I used to. Seeing Ed Scissum cry like he did after the Arians screen pass, I will *attempt* to never pull against anyone or wish misfortune AT ALL (especially in sports) the rest of my life. BTW #2 - Please mention that much of the recent discussion of Bama amongst the barners is an incredulity at Bama fans wanting to fire Franchione. Meanwhile, interviews with sources familiar with the case indicate that Alabama has offered a self-imposed penalty of no more than 20 scholarship cuts over no more than three years. The self-imposed penalty also includes recruiting restrictions and may include a fine. The NCAA's official letter of inquiry on Sept. 5 leveled 16 charges, including three major charges involving the 1995-97 recruitment of Stevenson's Kenny Smith and the 1999-2000 recruitment of Memphis' Albert Means. Those three charges pertained mostly to the actions of boosters Logan Young, Wendell Smith or Ray Keller. Although the university officially disassociated the boosters in its Oct. 24 written response, it also contested some of the allegations connected with those three charges. That included an argument by Alabama that the NCAA's 5-year statute of limitations had expired in the Smith case. University officials met with the enforcement staff Tuesday at a pre-hearing at Indianapolis, in preparation for a Nov. 17 appearance before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions. Although details were not clear, that meeting led to the enforcement staff reducing the allegations connected with at least one of the charges that stemmed from the Smith or Means recruitment. Alabama's statute of limitations argument in the Smith case appeared more likely to be considered by the infractions committee than by the enforcement staff, because the enforcement staff deemed it appropriate to include in the original charges. Alabama faculty athletics representative Gene Marsh and attorney Stan Murphy would not comment on the matter. But Murphy said that university officials were meeting to determine whether they could make public any information without violating a confidentiality agreement with the NCAA. If so, a statement could be forthcoming. The NCAA will not comment on the case until the committee on infractions announces its findings. That announcement is expected in January. It can choose to either accept Alabama's self-imposed penalties included in the Oct. 24 response or place additional penalties on the program. Meanwhile, the purpose of Tuesday's meeting was for the accuser (the enforcement staff) and defendant (the university) to go over all 16 itemized charges, making clear which ones they agree and disagree on before the hearing. On Tuesday, the enforcement staff decided to make alterations. Several are expected as it prepares its case summary to present to the infractions committee. The case summary will outline both sides' positions on each charge and list whether they agree. The committee will use it as a guide for the hearing. Although that hearing is scheduled for the same day as the annual Alabama-Auburn game at Jordan-Hare Stadium, university officials pushed hard to be included on that docket, because the next committee meeting isn't scheduled until February. University president Andrew Sorensen and Athletics Director Mal Moore will miss the game to be at Indianapolis, along with Marsh, Murphy, university compliance director Marie Robbins and outside attorney Rich Hilliard, a former NCAA investigator from the Ice Miller law firm at Indianapolis. Former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams, both accused of unethical conduct in the NCAA's charges, will be represented at the hearing. They are allowed to take part in discussions pertaining to their charges only. The alleged violations occurred during the coaching regimes of Mike DuBose and Gene Stallings, but current Crimson Tide head coach Dennis Franchione will appear before the committee by videotape, telephone, or both. Franchione is expected to talk about the current staff's commitment to following the rules. GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! Comments? Apparently you failed to read your arbrin e-mail. I saw those messages. You know I did because I speculated it would be the Stevenson charges that were dropped. I am talking about *this* list. As usual, BAMA is the main topic of discussion on the arbrin list. Just like Auburn was the main topic on this listlast Saturday. I know you were beating 'off', so you didn't have much else to talk about. Well, we are beating 'off' all week long this week, so we don't have anything else to talk about. Besides, NCAA = Newsworthy for most people. Especially barners. We wrote that book, remember? FWIW - I dispute your claim that UA was the main topic of conversation this week on AU-Sports. Of over 300 messages on that list on Wednesday when this first came out, less than 20 were about this. The rest were about cats. g You guys holding your breath till you see if this ends up being true? Wouldn't that be the smart thing to do? Yes it would. Can't blame anybody there, especially since it is an unnamed source. There is also a report on TI that UA has called a press conference for tomorrow involving Ivy Williams. A *REPORT*, or barner bait? I am talking about these: http://www.tiderinsider.com/forum/messages/12509876.html http://www.tiderinsider.com/forum/messages/12509843.html When will UA start wearing gold helmets? That is a 'odds' bet rather than a 'line' bet. Plunk down $100 on LSU at a sports bookie window in Vegas, if you win, you get $170. Bet $100 on UA, if you win, you get $200. Hummm.. Didn't know Bama was -4. I was assuming it was like the the Vegas sports bookies baseball lines, where they will show you a number (180, 210, 225) that you will get back if you bet $100. bill evans Hartselle, AL [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Wed, 31 Oct 2001 22:29:36 -0600 Jeff Todd [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: It seems strange that the 'line' is LSU +4, but the 'odds' are in their favor. Re: [RollTideFan] NAME THIS COUNTRY
These two points are the keys to this thread. It is a matter of priorities in a changing world. Aircraft carriers and 100 megaton hydrogen bombs do little to dissuade a small band of terrorists from doing their dastardly deeds. If they had to spend some time wondering if their organization had been infiltrated by US intelligence (even if it hasn't), it would at least cause them problems. Some on-target intelligence *could* give us some advance warning next time. knock on wood On a slightly different note that applies back to Jeff's original post: The US Army helicopter design/maintenance groups are in Huntsville. For the past three years I have been hearing that they didn't have enough spare parts to even use the choppers for training. It would have been nice if Clinton had taken the savings from streamlining the military and used them to buy some spare parts to keep what we already have in operation. A grounded Apache is only useful as a paper weight. bill evans Hartselle, AL [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Mon, 29 Oct 2001 18:23:40 -0500 Phillip L. -- comments embedded -- On Mon, 29 Oct 2001 19:02:40 -0500 Phillip L. Harbison Iraq and N. Korea aren't going to be attacking us in a conventional sense with ICBM's. North Korea supposedly has a missile that could reach the Alutien Islands. They might melt a lot of ice and snow and kill some baby seals. I'll let Greenpeace worry about that. Just as long as Russell's beer remains cold. :-) It might reach the Aleutians with a favorable wind and if the stars are in alignment. Otherwise it is likely to take out the N. Korean launch facility. Let's spend that money on intelligence so we'll know what they are planning. Re: [RollTideFan] NAME THIS COUNTRY
Phil - I agree with you on Jimmy Carter. He may have been an ineffective President, a less than Presidential leader, and totally lost on the economy, but his character is beyond reproach. We had a huge argument about this on AU-Sports about two months ago. Carter also did some things that he caught flack for at the time but that turned out to be the correct thing to do: He tried to kill the B-1 program and started the Tomahawk cruise missile program. His point was this: Why don't we continue to use these proven B-52's and put some cruise missiles on them so they don't have to come with 1500 miles of their targets? The few B-1's that we currently have will have been in mothballs for 40 years before they retire the B-52's in 2050. The objection to them keeping the polls open in St. Louis was that they ONLY did it in Democratic districts. Then they bussed in every likely Democratic voter they could find. But as Scott Rogers reminded us, politics is NEVER a polite, gentlemanly pursuit. Hanky-panky is the norm, unless your initials are JEC. bill evans Hartselle, AL [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Mon, 29 Oct 2001 19:16:12 -0500 Phillip L. Why would you object to registered voters exercising their right to vote? We have a big problem with voting throughput here in Atlanta and I would bet STL has the same problem. Most blue collar people have to work during the day when the polls are open. If the polls are only open from 7AM to 6PM, they have a window of about 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening to vote. That puts a big strain on the system. Of course the obvious solution is to LEGALLY expand the voting hours, and Atlanta has done that. I think some of our precincts stay open until 7 or 8 PM. I think anyone in line by closing time also gets to vote no matter how long that takes. Is that not reasonable? -- Phil Harbison mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe from this list just send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a BLANK subject line and the single word UNSUBSCRIBE (without the quotes) in the body or visit http://www.RollTideFan.net GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Most of the sorties in the current war have been flown from carriers. I believe the exceptions are some B-2 sorties which originated in the US. Carriers are a critical part of the Reach component of my four R's. Agreed that carriers are much more useful than the planet-busters but having two carrier task forces already in the Indian Ocean did very little to prevent bin Laden from planning and executing his Sept. 11 attack. It goes without saying now that we are flying attack sorties over Afghanistan that they are worth every penny of the $2 billion they cost to build and whatever it costs to maintain them.
