Much of our food is allowed to be contaminated with foreign material.
That would include anything other than the food. Here is an example of what
% is allowed in grain by the USDA:

Hi Deb:

The best bet is to keep all your starches (flour, rice, cereal) in glass
containers, or in the refrigerator. Make sure any pet food is a sealed
container as well. That way if you do get pantry pest at least it won't
spread to your other foods. Make sure you clean your pantry well. From what
I understand, pantry pests are pretty common, ick!!

It continued to be a problem for decades until I happened to notice
something called a pantry moth trap. There are plenty of entries via
Google

search on those words, but I don't have an unopened pack to tell you about
what I can get here. It's a flat cardboard that you fold into a
triangular

tube. You open up a lure and stick it on the sticky inside of the trap.
Moths are attracted to the lure, and get stuck on the sticky stuff. I
hardly ever see a moth now - except stuck in the trap.

-

That's the one I posted the link to the other day. I get it from Gardens
Alive here in the US.

Yes, sorry Sharon, I felt a bit silly when I got down to your post and saw
you had already said much the same thing. I had a look at the link, and
there looks to be some very interesting stuff at Gardens Alive. It's
probably a different company, but same principle, making what we can get
here in Australia, though I just get it at the supermarket. I noticed it
called Pantry Pest Trap, too, as opposed to Pantry Moth Trap.

Good point I forgot to mention.

They have a knack of getting into things. They can make very small holes in

The idea of plastic ziplocks is very good. You have a better chance to see

Re: CSBugs from Brown rice 2 - Pantry Moth Trap

2006-07-24 Thread Rowena
One of the bugbears when we first moved here to Australia was the Indian
Meal Moth.
When you're starting out from scratch building a household again and using
things like ice cream containers as kitchen containers, there is no
protection, as the caterpillars or whatever seem to just slide nicely under
the lid. Screw top containers were better because they were more difficult
to navigate, and one would find little webs in the screw threads.

It continued to be a problem for decades until I happened to notice
something called a pantry moth trap. There are plenty of entries via Google
search on those words, but I don't have an unopened pack to tell you about
what I can get here. It's a flat cardboard that you fold into a triangular
tube. You open up a lure and stick it on the sticky inside of the trap.
Moths are attracted to the lure, and get stuck on the sticky stuff. I
hardly ever see a moth now - except stuck in the trap.

I often wondered just how bad caterpillars and weevils were in the flour -
after all we must swallow loads we don't know about, and it can be scary to
sift flour and see these things there. Eventually I read somewhere that the
problem is not so much in the creatures themselves, as in the stuff that is
inside them. We don't always know where our great load of bad stuff comes
from; unintentional protein in grains may be one source.

Great fleas have little fleas etc. etc. etc.

Rowena
