CSCleaning Distillers
Hi PT, My husband soaks the distiller overnight with 6% distilled vinegar and adds baking soda to it. It would bubble so be careful, it could spill over. The following morning if there is any residue left, most of the time very tiny bits, he would use a long brush with long bristles at the end, and coiled brush on the main body which he bought from Harbor Freight. I believe that is used for oil changing. Another favorite brush is the ultra soft bottle brush he bought at Dollar Store. It does not take long to scrub away. Before this, he has a hard time getting rid of those hard calcifications left on the stainless steel boiler pot. This is hard to clean because the heating element is in the pot too. Now he does it very easily. Melly

So at some times of the year, usually in late spring when the river is running very high, I could distill once and the water would be fine. At other times of the year, when the river is low I'd have to double distill to get it pure enough. I may have been lucky. Right now the purchased distilled water is running a bit higher on the meter (about .5 to .6 uS) than I preferred to have it from the home still. But it is making perfectly clear CS. This may indicate that the source of the water that is being distilled and sold here now has changed. What comes out of a distiller depends in part at least on what goes into it, in my experience. sol -- The Silver List is a moderated forum for discussing Colloidal Silver. Thanks for that tip, David. that's one reason I'm not that crazy about those charcoal filters, ya never know if they're really doing their job. It seems to be the exact distiller as the one for $99... I saw that as well... paying double is quite normal, but then I'd have to use a transformer for the 110V, which I'm honestly no great fan of. Those transformers hum too loudly for my liking and I imagine they suck more energy than needed just to keep the transformer going. I just remind myself, that there's a reason for everything, I'm just still waiting to figure out what that reason may be... Should I really try using rainwater? I'm a bit skeptical about that, but sometimes I wonder which water to be cleaner, the tap or the rainwater... that's a tough one for me. Re: CSSteam distillers
Logical distiller tips [not from experience] 1] use as pure a source water as possible as water isn't the only thing in water that can be distilled ie...use a charcoal filter to absorb most gases and volatiles and/ or reverse osmosis. 2] Don't fill the water chamber all the way up and if it has a low setting, use it..to prevent condenser contamination from over boil. 3] Discard the first cup that comes out to eliminate any volatiles that made it through the charcoal filter...or use it for something else. 4] Don't use the post filter that most distillers have to add flavor to the water. 5] If the DW doesn't pass muster, run it through 2-4 again skipping the charcoal filter part. You can get counter top reverse osmosis water filters on eBay for around 100.00, I've found a couple for less than that, and these filter fluoride. They're simple to connect, no under sink plumbing to mess with. Then you could distill the filtered water if you want. Makes sense to me. CSCS: Steam distillers/xfrmers
A good transformer should not hum enough to be annoying. If it does ,then it is of poor quality. That means the iron laminations are too loose and they vibrate in sync. with the current cycles. If your supplier is close, get them to plug in and try them until you get one without the hum.The good ones are usually more costly, but will last longer and do a better job, while being more efficient. Having made my own xfrmers for special applications,I found this out. Harold -- The Silver List is a moderated forum for discussing Colloidal Silver. Re: CSSteam distillers
Hi Aldi, Atrazine is a chlor -azine herbicide; Not good for people and other living things! One of the problems with steam distillation is that some substances can be carried over in the steam, even oils and other organics. Some of these compounds have a vapor pressure that is similar to water's. In fact one way of purifying various compounds is to put them into a steam distiller and collect them in the distillate, after which the pure compound is separated from the distilled water i.e. by evaporation at low pressure/temperature. One solution (Eeww! Pun!) to this is to use reverse osmosis, in which a permeable-to-water-molecules membrane is used - many years ago this was done in high school chem classes with the old standby cellophane; Nowadays special membranes are made for the purpose. Note that these are Not the same as filters in the usual sense; A reverse osmosis filter system requires some additional pressure on the feed side as well as extra flow to act as a rinse medium, and also several pre-filters down to 1 micron so the R.O. membrane isn't plugged up by coarser debris. If water purified by reverse osmosis is then put through a de-ionisation cartridge to remove the few remaining ions small enough to make it through the R.O. membrane, that's about as good as you can get and is the process used in most labs and medical facilities to make their own pure water. Re: CSWater Distillers
Ernie, I bought my distiller from Polar bear water distillers in Edmonton about 15 years ago and have had very little trouble with it so far. The one I got is a model 42d25 that makes 25 gallons in 12-13 hours automatically. I would not buy any smaller holding tank than the 25 gal. as that lasts me about 10-14 days. It would be a nuisance to wash and set up every day or so. I can tell you this, though -- I'm totally sold on Sears' appliances, Kenmore specifically. My two sets of Kenmore washers and dryers have lasted almost twenty years each. And everyone I talk to that has Sears' Kenmore appliances says the same thing. So, it may be very well worth your while (and dollars) to get the Kenmore water distiller, unless that price is totally out of line with other brands. I hope that others on the list can give you better input. MA

Can you please tell me if these counter top distillers you've been mentioning make as good quality CS as you'd get with DW? I seem to remember reading that they didn't produce sufficiently pure water? Or is that wrong? Is it necessary to double distill or would a single distillation suffice? Are there any specific features you need to look out for in a distiller suitable for producing water for making CS? The scouring pad has 'no' effect. It's just work for no reason. The electrodes just get dirty again very quickly..it's part of the process, so just let the process be what it is. OH, I don't know, considering the amount of silver polished off the electrodes with every use of a scouring pad, it probably makes someone some money selling replacement electrodes sol Ode Coyote wrote: The scouring pad has 'no' effect. Re: CSWater Distillers
I use either 9% white pickling vinegar or the regular 5% white vinegar. The 9% just allows me to use less vinegar, but it is not always available in a store brand product. Store brand being cheaper than brand names. If I am using 5% I use about two cups (I really have not measured exactly), with 9% more like a cup, then fill the rest of the way with hot water and let sit over night or until most of the deposits are completely dissolved. (This method works for any kind of hard water deposits as well. Being on well water with a hardness of 42, moderate, we deal with this on faucets and toilets.) You don't need distiller cleaner at all. Works in coffe makers too. I tried the green scrubbies and it was more work. I read on this list to just wipe them lightly, that they did not have to shine. Besides my family kept using my dedicated scrubbie to wash dishes then I could not use it any longer. Garnet -- The Silver List is a moderated forum for discussing Colloidal Silver. RE: CSCS RE Steam Distillers
If you like Sears products, they have a couple of models available. I bought the smaller one ($130). which produces just under a gallon in about 5 hours. The bigger one ($180) will do just over a gallon in 6 hrs. I bought mine from Sears, because I know they will stand behind their product. -Original Message- From: Harold MacDonald [mailto:har...@direct.ca] Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 2:48 PM To: silver-list@eskimo.com Subject: CSCS RE Steam Distillers Does anybody have good recommends for a steam Distiller?Something reasonable.I don't trust my local supply of distilled water. Re: CSCS RE Steam Distillers
http://www.wholesalewaterdistillers.com/ Just received the Love Countertop Distiller, purchased from link above. Am thrilled with it after 2 days use. Total cost with shipping was $119(price of Love Countertop was $99). Makes 3-4 gallons per day. (saved plastic water bottles galore) Phone call informed that this is good deal; significant jump in price to $300-500 to find anything better. Apparently distilled and RO water are dead, so am getting info and product/solutions on Energetic live water from persons i trust. Was told to first get on Energetic water before starting fulvic acid minerals. The chlorine interacts badly with fulvic acid, as i understood it. New to this list, it is a privilege to have found you all. Thank you. CSRe: Copper tubing for distillers
Hi, James. h... You present some very good information. Now that I think about it, I've known for some time that drinking a lot of distilled water will leach the minerals out of your body. I learned this somewhere years ago when I bought a distiller and starting drinking that exclusively. We started supplementing with colloidal minerals to compensate. And, if I remember right, the coils on the distiller are stainless. Have to check that out... So, I agree with you, and, in the absence of additional info to the contrary, I would stay away from copper... Dale James Osbourne, Holmes wrote: HI Dale, I do not have a cite handy regarding the leaching of copper by very pure water. It is one of those things that I learned a long time ago. One has to be careful though, about thoughtlessly accepting anything that everyone knows is true, because a lot of the time everyone is wrong. My initial source was the installation details for a distilled water distribution system for home use. It specifically forbid copper tubing. Having never done it, I do not know what volume of distilled water will have to pass through copper tubing of a specific wall thickness before it makes a hole. Based on my experience with electrolysis caused by a small DC current passing through copper, ---a similar condition--- a pinhole could open in a few months, possibly in less than a year. Even if mechanical failure is not a serious problem, I would be concerned about the amount of copper consumed. Copper is used a germicidal agent; it is quite effective against fungi. Germicides kill living cells. The water used in water distribution systems usually has relatively high concentrations of dissolved solids when compared with distilled water, and the dissolved substances---often calcium and magnesium carbonate---balances the charges of the small amount of water which ionizes in distilled water. Perhaps one of the pro chemists on the list will comment on the details of this process. You may be able to find a table in a chemical reference book such as Langes's Handbook of Chemistry, or the CRC Handbook listing the solubility of various elements. I think the action takes place because the disassociated water is much more reactive ---lacking some small amount of ionized dissolved substance in the water to balance H+ and -OH. Try calling a company which manufacturers small stills for domestic use. One such is: Waterwise 1 (800) 874-9028. If you do dig up a solid reference, I would very much appreciate a copy of it or a pointer to the source. Why do you say the tubing will develop holes? I've never seen that happen. You may be right about the leaching of copper, but I would like to see some references supporting that position. I agree with your comments about stainless. Dale Do not use copper in a water distillation system so that it comes into contact with pure water vapor or liquid. The copper will go into solution and in high concentrations is toxic. Also, so much copper is lost that the system will soon develop holes. Water and steam will come out the holes. Short term use, as sometimes necessary at sea, may not be harmful, but one would have to do the math to make sure. Stainless steel tubing is a much better choice, preferably surgical grade. Takes about 2-3 hrs to make a gallon. perhaps a little less. i used it to heat kitchen in winter, you would want it outside or baSEMENT IN SUMMER. it has tubing you connect to a drain in front for flushing--i heat vinegar with lid off--boil a bit and drain--takes care of residue safely, then rerinse one more time. another tubing connects to output after coils where steam condenses, connected to that is a stainless tube with screen and acivated charcoal, then i put the end of that in clean rinsed glass container and walla distilled water! it automatically shuts itself off when water level is low, so i open top pour in more water and good to go.
