[SLUG] Decided to go it "alone"

2002-10-08 Thread Mick Boda

I have decided to configure my own Linux server using Redhat 7.2 rather than
the "click next" esmith server solution I have been using.

I decided on this route because the only way to learn is to DO... not let
something do the configs for you. I have a temp server with esmih to provide
internet sharing while I get in "Knee deep in depths of hell".

If I need help (when I need help) I promise to call wish me luck.

[SLUG] Debain Woody Info

2002-10-09 Thread Mick Boda

Does the new Debian support the Realtec rtl8139 NIC? (2.2r did not)

I run a 64MB dual head ATi raedon 7500LE/VE and use Xinerama to configure and
power my monitors, this is XF86Free standard, so I am right to assume that
I'll be set up XF86Config-4 under Debain?

What websites/ texts would you recommend for Linux user with about 12 months
of redhat experience?

Thanks in advance

[SLUG] Learning server stuff ... argghhh

2002-10-11 Thread Mick Boda
I'm trying to learn as I go and it's not easy! I thought being able to set up
a basic windows network made me ready for this!!! What was I thinking?

I have installed redhat 7.3 as my server software and I installed KDE as a
desktop, but the machine boots into Text mode. I installed a GUI so that if
(like now) I get stuck, I can use GUI tools to configure things and them jump
back into console and Vi the files created by the GUI tools.

But I have a problem at the moment. I have created an export file and listed
the files I want to export, ie;

/public (rw,insecure,all_squash)

But when I try to mount them I get RPC portmapper failure messages. I have run
rpcinfo -p on all machines and get the following output;

   program vers proto port
102 tcp111 portmapper
102 udp111 portmapper
1000241 udp 32768 status
1000241 tcp 32768 status
3910022 tcp 32769 sgi_fam

Except on Kate's (my wife) Mandrake install, whcih says RPC failure,
connection refused. I set the permissions to r w x and owner "nobody" group
"nobody" on the exported files.

Where have I gone wrong? Okay, I admit that the "where have gone right " is a
shorter answer.

One sentence pointers are fine ... please help.

Thanks Mick

[SLUG] To Debian or not to Debian, that is the ......

2003-02-20 Thread Mick Boda
Hi all,

I have a friend who wants to swap Debian Woody (3.0?) for Redhat 8.0.

I'm not particularly happy Redhat 8.0, preferring 7.3 and am looking to change
distros. I have always wanted to try Debian, but after frustrating network
and video problems, I never got past the install with "potato".

Here are my main concerns. I have a Dual head ATi Radeon 7500 which I'm happy
to write XF86Conf files for, but I have heard that Debian does not support
the Radeon cards. I could work around this by using a text based internet
browser to download the latest Xfree stuff (4.1 or whatever it is now). But
I also have a Realtek Rtl8139 100 base network card that Debian "potato"
would not recognise. Which makes it hard to log into the server to access
the internet.

Hardware is AMD XP1700, 1 GB PC 2100 DDR-Ram, IDE 1 60GB Seagate HDD (pri) 52X
Cdrom (sla) IDE2 CD-RW (pri) (may possibly be adding 40GB seagate this
weekend)
AGP, Generic "powered by" ATi Radeon Dual Head 7500; PCI slot 5 RTL8139
100Base network card.

Can anyone see any possible "unsupported" hardware problems and can anyone
suggest work arounds for those problems?

Regards

Mick

[SLUG] Overclocking under LINUX

2003-03-03 Thread Mick Boda
Hi all,

I wanted to get back into overclocking, but it crashes linux redhat.

Is there anyway to hack the kernel so that it thinks it's running on a faster
processor?

Alternatively there is an Epox motherboard (8K9A+) with locakable PCI slots,
that can unlock athlon XP processors without physically cutting and joining
bridges, would this scenario then allow Linux to be overclocked (assuming the
motherboard has some sort of CPU blocking technology)

[SLUG] Please explain ........

2003-03-18 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

Sorry about the dual posts. I came across the below article (extract)

op. But now that I'm
catching up, I have a question for Gianfranco: is there some reason
that you couldn't just use the Debian kernel packages? I've had
pretty good luck just doing 'apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18' and
being on my merry way -- it handles the necessary libraries and
other dependencies, including modifying your lilo.conf automagically
if you want.
The previous posts deal with this guy installing yellow dog on a laptop
with a radeon 7500, he seems to be suggesting that the way to update
Xfree under debian is to apt-get and install a more recent kernel
(would this be the unstable distro?).

Are my assumptions correct, is this a good idea, is there another way.

Regards

Mick

PS day off today merrily wading into debian and steepening the
learning curve.

[SLUG] apt-get RPMS ?/Downloading with Lynx/ What does & mean in Debian?

2003-03-18 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

I was wondering if there was any resolution on an earlier post about
using apt-get to retrieve and install rpms?

As you all know by now I've just started using debian woody but
need to update my Xfree Version. I was hoping I could "apt-get" them
off my redhat 8.0 CD's (which may as well be useful for something.
or maybe not)

I know I need Xinstall, extract, Xbin, Xlib, Xamn, Xdoc,
Xfnts,Xfenc,Xetc,Xvar,Xxserv & Xmod which are TAR.GZ(?) availble from
Xfree for Version 4.3.

If it's better to download the packages, How? I'm using lynx to surf
the net and do my downloading, but when I downloaded Xinstall.sh as
recommended, I got a text file which I couldn't .sh? Where should I
download the files to? I'll read-me some more on the Xfree site, that
should at least tell me how to "install" Xfree 4.3.

Lastly I was copying some of Redhat data from a CD, when I typed cp -r
b&w (being the Directories name for black and white photographs), I
recieved a login report?? then "created b". What is the "&" symbol
doing and why doesn't it do it under Redhat?

Regards

Mick

Relax guys, my day off is almost over once I get back into it,
I'll be lucky to post for a fortnight

[SLUG] debian dependency woes

2003-03-19 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

I've found a website

Index of /Linux/Debian/Cfree86-4.2.0-Opre1v3/sh4

But when I try to install the packages I recieve an error message

ie;

lbxproxy_4.2.0-Opre1v3_sh4.sh

dpkg: error processing /tmp/dehECa/L909-727TMP.deb (--install): package
architecture (sh4) does not match system (i386)
Errors encountered while processing.

I found this website trying to resolve a dependency problem while
downloading XFree86 4.2 from http://people.debain.org

that error message involved xbase-clients_4.2.1-3_i386.deb

that error message basically said that the aforementioned package
depends on
xlibs (>>4.2.0); however xlibs on my system is 4.1.0-16.

I'm trying to install XFree86 4.2 how can it be looking for
packages that are part of what of I'm trying to install? If I had Xlib
4.2, then surely chances are that I would have 4.2 already installed.

Help, please

[SLUG] debian dependency woaes

2003-03-19 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All (especially my new friend Mary),

I'm running an AMD (i686 I think) procesor, not intel. There was a
little disclaimer at the front of /people.debain.org in which the
webmaster indictaed that due to some oversight all packages are listed
as i386 and that other "ports" are avaible but still marker as i386.
There seemed to be no resolution to the problem other than they are
working on it.

Using lynx is new to me to so I've no idea how to get the exact
location of the sites I link to. But Mary indicated,

http://people.debian.org/~blade/woody/i386/

which is the correct site address. However, if I add this to my
apt-get source-list won't it stall when it asks for xlibs 4.2 ?

Hi All,

Okay, I cd'ed to /var/cache/apt/archives and typed dpkg -i *.*

any reference to Xfree86 4.3 though. I added the relevant URL for
Xfree 4.3 to my sources list and apt -get seems happy to go and
retrieve the packages.

But when I type startx, I recieve the same error messages and Xfree
version 4.1.0 being used.

How do I;

1. Check that 4.3 is infact installed
2. Get Xwindows to use 4.3 instead of 4.1

[SLUG] Debian Unstable?

2003-03-25 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

My Windows 2000 went to poo and I (As I'm inclined to do when I've had

Nothing like a clean slate.

I'm going to be reinstalling Debian woody tonight, I was wondering if I
should install the unstable version which (I understand) comes with
xfree86 4.2 ready to roll.

Also, does anyone have any recommended sources to add to Apt-Get during
the installation phase.

Or, Should I just install the base system and ue apt-get to download
all the xwindows stuff. (Just thought of that)

Thanks in advance

[SLUG] problem adding source during debian install

2003-03-27 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

LOOK OUT, got some time off, and we all know what happens when I have
time off!

The story so far. After windows self destructed, I refomatted my
entire hardrive. I've reinstalled Win XP ON /dev/hda1 (Funny how I
feel compelled to keep reinstalling Crap software on the basis of how
much I paid for it!) I've created a 7.5GB Partition /dev/hda2, for
debian and will add /dev/hda3 to house either redhat 7.3 (My old Fav)
or create a really big /Home Directory.I'm thinking redhat purely so
that I have a Linux GUI to use... windows is strictly gaming ... no
surfing, no working.

I've reached the part of Debian install where I feed one CD after
another while it builds its sources list. It then says "Would you like
to add another source".

Damn right I do (in this quest to get my woody "gui" going with Xfree86
4.2)

I select edit sources list by hand
I type http://people.debian.org/~blade/woody/i386/./
I recieve the following error message E: Type 'http, etc,etc,/i386/./'
is not known on line 9 in source list /etc/apt etc, etc.

If I change this to
deb http://people/debian etc, etc
I recieve and error message that line 9 of /etc/apt/sou is
malformed.

What now?

To mount the SMBFS in /etc/fsatb , I need to add a user name and

password?

Also, I want all users on the local network to be able to mount and

[SLUG] We have 4.2 !!! Now that easy part is over......

2003-03-28 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

Those of you who have considered hacking into the SLUG mail server and
black listing my e-mail will beglad to know that I have finally got
Xfree86 4.2 installed. (Mary, James, Jamie, Rob,Greeno, Steve and all
the others who have endured my e-mail bombardment reach with shaky
hands for their sctoch glasses, blinking in disbelief. "could it
really be over?". Of Course not! That was just the first part. cue:
the survivors drain scotch glassse and think about setting up a "I was
exposed to mick boda" help group)

I have a few more questions, then probably a half dozen more after
that, but

1. Is there an Xconfigurator type command to generate a new
XF86Config-4 file?
2. I have a Radeon 7500VE, should the device driver be "ati" or
"radeon" (if it should be radeon, it ain't listed in 4.2)
3. I tried jamie's link to gnome downloads. I tried

"deb
http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/mirrors.evilgeniuses.org.uk/debian/
backports/woody gnome2.2" I recieved a 404 error. I tried a few
combos, adding space ./ at the end, removing http:// and just using
ftp://, didn't try ftp://ftp, . correct me if I'm worng (maybe I
should have just put correct me ... thre wrong is usually a given) ftp
and http are two different ways of downloading so you can't mix them?

Again, Thanks for all the help so far. You've been great.

2003-03-28 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

Pleased as punch, I have what I believe is xterm spread across my dual
19" monitors. We are getting therre!

Tried to install gnome but it has dependency problems and using -f
hasn't solved them. Actually, when I say dependency problems, What I'm
getting is messages like

depends: gain
depends: gnome-spell but it is not going to be installed
lots of these messages.

The command I'm using is apt-get update && apt-get install gnome

I'm going to try KDE, if it breaks my system, I'll either work with it,

I've commented out the gnome 2,2 line in apt-get.

During the installation process I was asked if I wanted to run tasksel

I was asked what window manager I wanted and selected gdm. Is it

Hi All,

I ran apt-get install gnome-core the error was Couldn't find package

I get alot more error messgaes when I don't comment out the 2.2

Does this mean that gnome isn't installed anywhere on the system? if I
run apt-get install kde I recieve a messgae that kde is referenced but
not uploaded.

Why isn't apt-get referencing the 7 cd's it asked me to scan during the

[SLUG] I told you I was dangerous around Linux!!!

2003-03-30 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All.

Well, once again my "dill-iance" with Linux comes to the fore, I'm sure
anybody else could relicate the following steps and get the gnome
desktop but not me, I get KDE 2.2.2 (which makes me very happy,
cause I love KDE, but that is not the point.)

I typed the following

apt-get update && apt-get install x-window-system-core, then
apt-get update && apt-get install x-window-systemthen
apt-get update && apt-get install gnome-core  then
apt-get update && apt-get install gnome

I get KDE!

seriously though, I'm really happy that i have my favorite desktop
working, but I'm apprehensive, waiting for the break.

The only other thing is that my sound isn't working which isn't
surprising,as it's an intergrated AC97 sound card.

The error message is as follows

"Sound Server informational

Error while initialising the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (permission denied)

The sound server will continue using the null output device."

Also,

I have tried to locate the desktop switching tool to see if I can log
into gnome,is there a way to this from the terminal?

and finally,

how di check defaults such as language and locales

[SLUG] Debian Sound not working

2003-03-30 Thread Mick Boda

This presents a list of all the modules you can
activate, grouped into logical areas. You then just select it, it gets
loaded, and then you don't have to worry about it again (assuming it's
the
right one). Fire up modconf and see if there is a driver that looks like
ac97?

unfortunately, there is nothing remotely like sound at all! How do I

[SLUG] Debian Sound and other problems

2003-03-30 Thread Mick Boda
Hi all,

A few things that I need a bit of hand with.

1. I've installed samba, but the smbmount command is not being found.

2. I know to check a kernel version on RPM systems RPM -q kernel, but
not on a debian system.

3. I recieve the following message from apt-get re sound

Sorry, alsa-base is already the newest version.
   E: Couldn't find package alsa-modules-2.4.20-i386

I ran apt-get install snd, which appearred to do something, but Irecieve
the following error messages running modprobe

  foo:~# modprobe snd
   modprobe: Can't locate module snd
 foo:~# modprobe sound*
  modprobe: Can't locate module sound*

4. I have alot of iconless applications in KDE, I still don;t know if I
can log into gnome (which is what I originally tried to install) I've
tried apt-get install kde (not update, cause I don't want KDE 3.1 which
the one I assume people are having trouble with) and apt-get install
, ie; xscreensavers.

5. Irritatingly, I recieve the following error message

1 packages not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
Setting up diald (0.99.4-5) ...
debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Gnome

subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
   Errors were encountered while processing:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I didn't want diald, the machine access then internet through a server.
I deselected dialup when I was setting up the system, but apt-get must
have fetched it anyway.

Also, I thought gnome would be the front-end as it where for Xwindows,
it appears that I've selected it for apt-get, how do I change this back
to dialog.

On a positive note, anyone wishing to run dual monitors on a radeon dual
head card should be able to use my previousy posted Xinerama file, just
copy it over XF86Config-4 and restart your xserver... too easy.

On a more positive note, I've learnt more about linux in the last 4 days
than I have over the last two years... (yes, you can be this bad at
linux after two years, don't look so shocked!)

Regards and Many thanks for continued support

[SLUG] Debian x2

2003-03-31 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

I haven't been wollowing in depths of sound hell. Instead, I had a dig
around under my table and knocked together a P133MHz, 128MB ram, 2.5GB
HDD 24x CD-Rom CRAPPER! I belted Debian onto, # out the security
updates and set about manually installing blackbox, KDE, and alsa...
(pronouced ULCER, no doubt!).

The sound card in the crapper is a CM8330 ISA card, it's on the
supported list at ALSA website.

I ran the following command.

apt-get install alsa-base

I then did as David suggested and reverted to 'sndconfig' which ran, but
also generated errors... I think I have narrowed the problem down
there are no sound modules configured on either the CRAPPER or my PC.

The other thing is that I've been given alsa alsa-modules-2.4.20-i386,
but I'm running the 2.2.2o kernel and it has you guessed it, umet
dep probs. What version of alsa should I try instead, remebering that
alsa base is "the newest" according to my apt-getting.

[SLUG] i386, i586,i686 for AMD XP

2003-03-31 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

I'd like to thank Adam Hewitt for his time and effort in preparing his
email to me. I have read the document several times and tried out
different things on the crapper. So now to the real deal.

Before I start on Adam's "Tutorial" I'd just like to know what
architecture is recommended for an AMD Athlon XP 1700.

It seems a shame to stick with an unoptimised i386 package, redhat have
an optimised -athlon' kernel which I think uses i686 which is actually
written for pentium processors and i586 is pentium and K6, but a K6 and
XP processor are worlds apart.

Your experiences and recommendations are most welcome. Upgrade starts
at 17:00 hours.

[SLUG] kernel sources not currently in apt-get

2003-03-31 Thread Mick Boda
Hi all,

Jeff suggested;

"I would suggest installing the kernel-image-2.4.20-k7 package"

to run my AMD powered debian installation, I google searched for

apt-get kernel-image-2.4.20-k7

I found the following URL
https://init.linpro.no/pipermail/skolelinux.no/feedback/2003-February.txt

which isn't english, and doesn't appear to be an archive, I'm
"reluctant" to try www.apt-get.org, but only becuase it's unofficial and
for something as crucial a kernel upgrade, I'd like to know that
everything is in place for the "apt'ing".

Can anyone give me an apt-get source for the K7 kernel and what is best
wording to use when googling for your apt-get sources

[SLUG] Sound question, but not Debian. Linux Anti-virus

2003-04-03 Thread mick boda
Hi All,

Took Jeff's advice and considered my current situation ... (ie, two kids under
3 years and self employed = read! when?) and reinstalled redhat 8.0 which I
can at least find my way around in. I have Debian on another machine so that
I can play around with that and I have found a guy in Wollongong who is
willing to teach all that is Debian (when his first Semester Uni exams are
over).

I have two questions I'd like to post. The first is

What Linux Anti-Virus are you using?

Second question relates to a weird problem in Redhat 8.0 with sound. It works
under gnome but not under KDE? It's the same AC97 card that I was fooling
with in Debian.

On a final note, I did get sound working under debian, I reinstalled debian,
pressed F3 key, used the bf24 image ran sndconfig and listened to some mp3s.

I'll keep you posted from time to time on how I go

Regards

[SLUG] Sound question, but not Debian. Linux Anti-virus

2003-04-03 Thread Mick Boda

Hi Greeno,

I'll be there, you won't miss me, I'll the guy wearing a chicken mesh
framework (good for stopping thrown bottles, etc ... not so good at
stopping over ripened tomatoes hm.. ) and a raincoat.

My wife said I'd better go if all my "fans" are waiting for me, but she
wants to make sure my life insurance is paid up.

I've just put the date into Ximian as the 25th of April, slug starts at
6:00pm from memory .. are these details right?

Thanks for the opportunity, I promise not to disappoint.

Regards

Mick

[SLUG] Replying to the list

2003-04-03 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

Just a point of clarification. I appear to be sending replies off the
mark (ie, not to the list).

I'm using Ximian as my mail client. To post to the list do I hit reply?
Or will this use the private email. As Jeff Waugh pointed out, my RE:'s
keep changing, that's because I usually type a a new e-mail to respond,
fearing that hitting reply sends the email to the private address.

This is only mailing list I use, everyone else I speak to is through
forums, which are obviously different.

Regards

Mick

[SLUG] RedHAt 9.0 Availabilty

2003-04-04 Thread Mick Boda
Hi All,

Thanks for the info re: replying to the posts.

Has anyone go/ can get Redhat 9.0? If so, please let me know if you can
get me the/a copy at the next slug meeting and let me know how much $ or
CD's or a combination.

If anyone from Everything Linux is going, let the list know and I'll
purchase from you, Redhat needs the money and I like the stickers.

Regards

Mick

[SLUG] RedHat 9.0 Availabilty

2003-04-04 Thread Mick Boda
Hi ALl,

Chris Wrote,

I can get the ISOs and burn them, no guarantee that I'll have them by
the next meeting. However I'll do them for $10 (includes the 3 CDs and
2gb downloaded over dial-up :P).

If you want them, email me back and I'll keep you updated on the
progress :)

Make it $20, for all your trouble and yes, please keep me posted. If I
had broadband I would download them, but on dial up it's just not
viable, my wife actually wants to the phone (the audacity!) from time to
time.

Thanks

Mick

[SLUG] Linux Anti-virus

2003-04-06 Thread Mick Boda
Hi all,

Just got through all the email of the last 3 days ... thanks for the
anti-virus info.

On a side note, has anyone experienced WinXP pre and post service pack 1
installation. A Windows friend of mine told me that MS had built an
"I'm talking to you".dll (or some such) that would cut communication
with Linux servers.

Curious I fired up XP installed service Pack 1 and bugger me, I couldn't
access the shares on my e-smith server (which I could before updating),
but I could still access the internet? (which is also through the
server). my e-smith is old and unpatched, I don't know if newer version
of Linux will have these problems?

For the record, esmith is based on version 6 redhat kernel and tells
windows boxen that it's an NT 4.0 server.
