Yes, it is a bit murky in terms of documentation, but once it's going (and
configured with channel information), it's very nice. HDTV is pretty crazy.
There are good models available at low prices now, check the Linux DVB site
and Google to make sure you get one that works well with Linux. :-)

Hi Shaun,
Read the ff. info so very carefully before expending time and money
on this intended project.
http://www.schlesinger.us/nf20031230.htm
The endeavour is even more hazardous here in Australia. There is
no working 'tv_grab_au' from the official xmltv software up-to-now
AFAIK. You will discover this when you get to 'Zap2it' a tv
program listing site that does not provide you correctly with the list of
service providers here in Australia. By this time it will be too late as
you probably have bought the hardware and spent tremendous hours
following the HOWTO (http://www.mythtv.info;
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php). I have Fedora Core 2. ReHat
is the primary platform supported in this HOWTO. Also it is required
you have KDE instead of GNOME, which is excellent because I
am into Kolab Servers (http://kolab.org) for many customers. Incidentally,
I am gradually shifting all workstations and servers to KDE.
To get a sense of the issues involve, check the postings here:
http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=52&hl=#entry22169
But in the end, if learning specifically about linux kernel, device drivers,
compilation, installations, mysql, and lots of fun things about linux is of
paramount benefit to you, then, it is worth the time and money to plunge
into this project. But I for one would not do it for getting the
pleasure of
having a TIVO-like service.

I have FusionHDTV DV3-T that I installed on my TEST server with
heaps of CPU power and memory and heaps of storage (over a terabyte)
that works off-and-on requiring lots of maintenance work. I've given up
on this since Dec, 2004 and hope to get back to it when time permits.
If you simply wish to get the pleasure of digital tv recording, editing,
and controlling, then get commercial TIVO, at least for now.

Re: [SLUG] Digital TV Tuner Cards On Linux?

2005-02-09 Thread Marek Wawrzyczny
My boss is trying to get this exact service working under FreeBSD (Linux
cannot be more difficult) with varying degree of success. He was talking to
the authors of the TV-tuner card driver directly, they have been of
tremendous help.

I do know he has managed to run Myth??? (I think) under X-server, got the
TV-tuner card to run, change channels, etc. None of this was exceptionally
smooth, but was not difficult either. I know the TIVO-like software he runs
can get the TV listings for free-to-air channels off the net, as well as
weather reports, news, etc. He was still struggling to get the IR to work,
improve TV reception and the compression quality, etc...

I can try and get more information if necessary. As the previous poster has
said, be careful of what you buy, do your research before hand. See if you
can get a good returns policy, because driver availability/quality on Linux
can be a very tricky proposition. I would suggest coming up with a list of
cards and checking the forums to see how helpful the authors of drivers for
these cards are, because if you run into issues you will definedly want to
have a card which has a very vibrant community following.

Cheers,

Marek Wawrzyczny

Nope but if you look on the mythtv user lists you will find a a python,

TIVO doesn't have an official guide data either, but you can just use

It appears that this Schlesinger is a bit of a dolt. a couple of weeks
to built a mythtv box, Yeah right! It took me less than a day. This
guy seems to be a complete noobie to linux in the first instance. I
got mythtv running on Mandrake10. and 10.1 I used the CVS as opposed
to the tarballs, at the moment I am considering Gentoo as the next
step. I can see a couple of weeks in the gentoo part, that is
understandable. He started off with SuSE, who in their right mind
would use SuSE for multimedia, they don't ship codecs because it
breaches their license.

I beg to differ there there is a tv_grab_au and it works fine. I would
recommend Linux users to use mythtv, it is in my case (wifeproof), and
(kid proof I have a 4 and 3 yr old) who can manage the interface to
play their favourite movies and channels.

This is a once off configuration requirement. You don't have to
memorise the hz setting of every channel.

It seems like the most attractive part of tivo will be removed pretty
soon, as it is illegal to cut commercials in the US and under the FTA
it will come here.

You can't knock it until you have tried it. Mythtv works beautifully
if you know the capabilities and limitations of the distro you have
chosen then Mythtv will work for you.

So far you have given only 1 lame example of failure. I know of a lot
more success stories and most of them are in the slug list.

I know you've said there are a number of success stories on MythTV

be replicated to authenticate these claims. It is one thing to claim
something but another to get authentications for these claims.
I'd like to replicate it to see if it works for me without too much of a

additional hardware and software.

There is NO 'tv_grab_au' from the de-facto http://www.xmltv.org

OK, this explains why my channel list does not work consistently.
I am using the perl version.

The weather web pages work but I get 'blank and black' screen when

ffs Oscar, the first hit on google is a perl script that I've been
using fine for about 6 months now:

I don't get what part of mythtv even needs a howto. The docs on the

This is the one I currently tested.
It does not work for me. There are tv_grab_?? for other countries from
www.xmltv.org like:
tv_grab_jpfor Japan - I can run this and it gives the correct list.
There is tv_grab_na for North America, for UK, Germany, etc., but NONE
for Australia in this source.
I am using Fedora Core 2 and you are using Debian. I am using FusionHDTV
DV3-T.
What HDTV card are you using ?

For my linux platform, the following is the MythTV HOWTO I used and got
me to install
with no errors.

http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php
I can use the above to re-install everytime. In other words, the HOWTO
is replicable with
the same results everytime, i.e., Weather Pages with all the details
comes up but NO TV channels.
Just black and blank screen, no shadow or something like that.

This is because tv_grab_au (from
http://www.onlinetractorparts.com.au/rohbags/xmltvau/)
does not work successfully on my installation. I'll try this perl
version again and the python
version suggested in another post.

I'll 2nd that. I've had one for a little over a year and have started
tinkering with hacking some little apps of my own for it :) The firmware

A set top box is not a recorder; Hard Disk recorders are around $1000.
The DVICO fusion + mythtv works well. Setup is a bit of a bitch.

I'm happy to help debug the problem with the script if you'd like, but
I'm going to need more information than that.

Thanks for offering help to debug.
Yes, I will provide more detailed info on 'tv_grab_au'(perl version) as
soon as
I have re-set my MythTV-Fusion Linux Test Box. I have it setting on
a different project at this moment.

"In what way doesn't it work?"

The 'tv_grab_au' that I downloaded straight from that site complains that
something is missing but I can't post the exact words of the error because
I have setup my Test Linux box without the MythTV-Fusion at this
moment.
You said you have been using one for the last six months, so
I assume you did some modifications to it to make it work. Is this right ?
'tv_grab_au' does not complete execution at all. Somewhere, along the
execution process, it bombs out with an error that says 'something is
missing'.
I will post the exact message as soon as I have setup my Linux box.

A number of other users as you will notice in the MythTV and related lists
have the same execution problems that I encountered. None to my knowledge
have posted corrections that works in my setup. Some claimed that they have
a working version but no details of the 'tv_grab_au' (Perl version is
what I'm
talking about).

As far as I'm concerned, the claim that it works can only be verified if
there
are details of the install procedure (HOWTO) including the HDTV card used
and that I can replicate the HOWTO successfully. Others may have different
views on this that may be equally respected.

I presume you've tried running the script standalone (outside mythtv)?

Yes, I've done this including modifying the script after which I managed
to run
without errors but the results do not yield the correct ones. I have at
least 3 of
the previous versions of 'tv_grab_au', none of which works on my MythTV
setup.

My MythTV setup itself worked because the MythWeather module and of
course the MythConfig, etc., are working. I suspect my MythTV channels
also works even though I get a Black-Blank Screen when I switch to
TV channel. I believed I get this results because my 'tv_grab_au' does
not work
for now.

I learned from various lists, there are legal and technical barriers
preventing FREE ACCESS to these services here in Australia. Service
providers are looking for fees before allowing access. This is
UNDERSTANDABLE
and FAIR. Providers have to have a way to sustain themselves and pay
for their investments.

But to get this commercial service one has to buy also commercial
hardware and pty software (TIVO about $1000) which I do not agree with.
Besides I'm not keen in having the pleasure of the service, rather I'm just
curious in understanding the operations under Open Source environment
which I have now, I believe. I just want to finally validate my
understanding
by having a complete and working system. Until then I can't say my
understanding is complete.

The HOWTO found on the Internet are all done for one of the countries, other
than Australia, AFAIK, with 'tv_grab_??' that is available from the
distro of
XMLTV. For example, 'tv_grab_jp' which works for me. But I can't test
because I'm not in Japan.

There are 'tv_grab_??' for North America, Germany, UK, etc and NONE for
Australia from the official XMLTV source codes, at least during the last
time
I checked in November, 2004. Also, none of these HOWTO I referred above
is using FUSION-HDTV card. Most are using Hauppage cards. I am
reluctant to buy
Hauppage card(costing about $500) as I'm not convinced at this stage
that the problem
is with my FUSION-HDTV card. That's why I'm looking for a decent
'Australian MythTV HOWTO' even with other than FUSION-HDTV card that
is proven to work and I can replicate.

Okay, so in the opinion of all those people using mythtv, what do you
suggest as the best linux supported card to purchase at this time..
anyone with a budget card that managed to get it working.

Also, what sort of speed machine is ideal. I've got a spare 1200Mhz
Duron, and I am not sure this would cut the mustard for use as a
mythtv machine.. If I decided to tinker with it.

I think it should be fine if you go down the DVB route (and I would
suggest you do any way). Im using a twinham card, Whilst is easy to
set up in linux and cheap, I do notice the signal quality is lower than
it should be (which results in artifacts in play back). In hindsight I
would have spent a little more on the cards.

Well I am about to do an upgrade on my wifes parents machine, and thus
means will have surplus the duron 1200. I figure might as well use it
for something. If I can get a DVB-T card that supports linux and is
reasonably prices (has compared to the higher end cards). Then I'd
like to try it out. As on the weekend, I needed to record something
and both PVR tuners where recording. :(

So back to my questions. Is the duron 1200 with 512mb ram grunty
enough and what is the most suitable card.

Not so great if you either:

A set top box is not a recorder; Hard Disk recorders are around $1000.
The DVICO fusion + mythtv works well. Setup is a bit of a bitch.
See http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~chrisp/DVICO-Linux/

Setup is now made extremely easy by C Pascoe the device driver

He responds promptly to all emails and I'm an ardent advocate of his.
Once the source file: DVB-cjp-20041127.tar.gz
is downloaded the procedure is mechanical as follows:
1. Untar the downloaded file in a directory, say,
/usr/src/redhat/dvd.

This is what I have after untarring:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] dvb]# ls -la
total 756
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Feb 14 11:00 .
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 Feb 13 08:03 ..

drwxr-xr-x 6 12345 users 12288 Feb 14 10:58 video4linux
[EMAIL PROTECTED] dvb]#
2. With vi, edit 'DVB-Build.sh' and change the line:
BUILDDIR=/build
to where I untarred the source file,
BUILDDIR=/usr/src/redhat/dvb
3. Run 'DVB-Build.sh remove-symbols', 'DVB-Build.sh clean',
and then 'DVB-Build.sh'.
These will fix the VERSION No conflicts, clean-up the binaries,
and recompile the drivers.
4. Finally, run 'DVB-Init.sh start'. This will load device drivers.
5. My dmesg confirms the loaded drivers and shows,
snipped

6. I have tested and replicated the above procedure on Fedora Core 2
and Core 3
a number of times. The end-result is the same everytime.

7.The next step is install MythTV by following the HOWTO from
http://www.wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php. This is mostly mechanical too.
8. With all the above efforts my MythTVChannel does not work
because 'tv_grab_au' is not working. This is up until December, 2004.
9. I'll get back to it when time permits.

A word of caution here. While most steps are mechanical the process
takes over 8 hours due to a large volume of software apps and
libraries
to be downloaded using apt-get. There is at least 260MB of data, maybe more
if your Linux Dist version is older.

I have a clean channel ADSL with 512K download and 256K upload pipes.
If you have ADSL with 256K download and 126K upload pipes it might take
you over 20 hours to complete the process.
Don't attempt to do this with dial-up connections.
Then add the time required to configure and re-configure and test.

I've got 1500 so download is no problem. Besides if not, just go do
something for the few hours and do it the next night after the
download.

Thanks for the info guys, think I might go a divico fusion.. although
the twinhan seems to do the job too and is cheaper. And as others have
pointed out works.. although both could be as troublesome as each
other.

Oh the decisions.

If the shop has one in a machine (they often put stuff like this in display
boxes), take in a good LiveCD and try it out. ;-)

Yes thats a good idea.

Just had a peek, think I might buy the divico fusion one, as it has
svideo in (and tv antenna pass through). Although the pass through is
not so important as the machine is just going to sit in my room
plugged into a tv port that never gets used.

Now if I break something tinkering then it won't affect the pvr
recording some of my shows and my wifes stuff. Be interesting to see
if the duron 1200 has enough grunt to do it. Guess I will find out, if
its not I guess I will get a shiny new processor and mainboard later
on. BUt atleast I can have a go and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've bookmarked most of the url's listed,
so that when I do get that machine in april/may I will be able to have
some reading to do.

Thanks

I'd guess that you needed to install some additional Perl library.
The error message would have told you which one.
