[RCSE] CG test

2001-02-27 Thread FoxSoar

II use both test for C.G.The inverted test helps me decide if it is close on
C.G. While the sailplane airfoils do not fly very good inverted, It will let
you know if you are close on C.G. depending how much down elevater is needed.
I use this with the dive test. If inverted flight take alot of down elevater
it probably is nose heavy. A more rearward C.G. will require less down.

Mike Fox

  D) Inverted CG test is better then a dive test IMHO

Where did this idea come from?

Keeping in mind that the greater percentage of planes discussed on this
forum have airfoils with some camber, what is the value of an inverted check
of the CG and how is it performed?

Tied with getting to fly awesome places, flying with guys like Brian is the
best part of my travels. Tullahoma has a couple of contests each year and
their field is huge and full of thermals. Its surrounded by Pine tree
forests and easy to get to off of Hyw 65 or even Hyw 40.

You guys can fly into Nashville, do some sight seeing at the Opry, grab some

fly. Yes there is great soaring between the coasts!

You can contact Brian at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for congratulations and info on

Hey there, Karlton. I'm with you! Look at the intro to the LSF site. It
refers to the aesthetic beauty of soaring in the opening lines: "A slim,
graceful, long-winged craft arcs upward smoothly and steeply into the summer
sky, accompanied only by the faint whistle of air accelerating past its
gleaming surfaces.". While Bill is correct in stating that you don't
get points for your glider's "looks" in a contest, you will earn the
admiration of your fellow pilots for a clean, well built and beautifully
finished model, regardless of type! Some of the lightest, strongest and
best engineered models I've seen, and that includes good 'ol fashioned built
up models, were also the most beautifully finished models. It shows a real
attention to detail and a striving for technical excellence when someone
goes to the trouble of engineering and then finishing a plane so that it
looks as good as it flies, two goals that are not often compatible.
Besides, a good looking plane is jus' w cl... :-)

Re: [RCSE] Focus 3

The Focus 3 is the typical choice for the Boomerang and other wings when it
is a first plane. The mixing is automatic and easy. If he had a computer
radio then the advantage would be in using exponential control for pitch and

 Flyers,

A young friend of mine has aquired a Boomerang and a Hitec Focus 3
transmitter. I wanted to know if he can use the "coupling" function of
this transmitter for elevons on his 'rang.

I have read Dave Register's article in the April '99 issue of RC Soaring
Digest (don't worry Gordy some of us do read 'em, and love 'em by the
way!) but he only mentions v-tails and flaperons. Will I need to donate
my Ohmark mixer to this guy?

Also, he did not get a NiCad Rx pack for this plane, it seems like bad
form to me, but will loose cells stay in the spring clip battery holder
I'm assuming he has under combat conditions? I would think not.

 Wondering in Arcata,

 Mike

[RCSE] Beauty is in...

2001-02-27 Thread James C Deck

The discussion about beauty brought to mind a comment that Dave Sanders
made about non-scale R/C sailplanes. He called 'em "Tool" planes. I never
heard anybody call a shovel "ugly". And about the Mantis: after two days in
the hot sun at the '99 AMA/LSF Nats, watching Mantis's (Manti?) nail landing
after landing, they started to look pretty nice. And, while on the topic of
beauty, I don't think GM would sell many natural colored 'Vettes - why is
natural fiberglass so popular for R/C sailplanes? Note: The weight issue
has already received enough bandwidth.

My Tragi has lots and lots of room in the nose so I was wondering if there
is a way to have two battery packs on board, one as the primary and one as a

as well make good use of the space since I have the room and need the weight
in the nose.

Otherwise, I will use the space to carry an extra sandwich to the hill.

straight out in front and it's legs and feet straight back. It is one of
the
most graceful thing to behold and when it comes to landings it can't be
beat.

Re: [RCSE] DS, speed- and energy management

2001-02-27 Thread Dieter @ ShredAir

Everybody interested in theory of speed- and energy management of
dynamic soaring have a look at
www.lfm.mw.tu-muenchen.de/lfm_sources/albatros.html

In a nutshell, this page shows and summarizes the results of
theoretical calculations designed to optimize the DS flight path. In
the graphs, the green portions have a positive energy budget, while
energy is lost in the red portions; the yellow horizontal arrows are
wind vectors.

The study reports that satellite observations have shown albatross
flying up to 1000 kilometers by DSing the wind gradient between
roughly 0 and 20 meters above the water surface.

The pictures of the glider show a DS path on the UPwind side of a
mountain range but downwind of a smaller ridge. The text does not
address the significance of the large range is or why it is included
in the images. It does say that the special head-up display is
designed to help the pilot attain the optimum flight path, and that
simulated and real-world experiments are being conducted to determine
the feasiblity of such aflight path.

Those with gobs of bandwith can download a 33-megabyte animation: albi2.mpg

[RCSE] Precision Landing Runways, Scoring Software???

2001-02-27 Thread GCGassaway

I have a couple of questions related defining a "runway", and software for
scoring.

First, for the actual landing zone. For contests that use runways several
meters long, what are the runways made of? A line, cord, ribbon, or what? I
figure ribbon would not work well since the wind would tend to blow it to one
side, even when laid out into the wind at the start of the round, changes in
wind direction happens. And a thin line like a hi-start line would be too
hard to see.

And second, can someone point me to database and/or spreadsheet templates
that are used for scoring precision landings? Whether for AMA or F3 events.

The two best ways I have seen this laid out are at Nats and another midwest
contest. Nats uses a material that is like what is used to web lawn
chairs, red in color, with white stripes painted on for contrast. There is
a metal eye at each end and the tape is spiked in very tight and flat. It
is so strong and flat that if you nail a 100 your nylon skeg will slide
down it like it is on ice... (tell me how I know, or ask Joe Hahn...) 8-)

The second way is just spray painting the landing zone on the turf.
