RE: [RCSE] Bird attacks vs. airplane color
I fly with bald eagles on a near daily basis. If you are ahead and below them, they will occasionally come over and look at you. If you are above or behind them, they will evade and fly further on down the beach. I've only been attacked once, by an immature eagle. He took a claw sized chunk out of the leading edge on a WACO Mosquito and then proceeded on down the beach feeling very proud of himself. I write this off as a bad case of teenage avian hormones. Re: [RCSE] Delegating Shipping
>I will let them pack and ship the items for me. < I can recall a bad situation mentioned on rec.models.rc.air where someone had won an R/C copter on Ebay and the seller tried to bill the winner an extra $100 or so due to UPS shipping fees (the seller had originally quoted something like $70-80 for shipping). The seller simply dropped off the copter at UPS and "let UPS pack and ship it". Some of that amount was how much they charged for doing all the packing, maybe gold-plated bubble wrap while they were at it. And perhaps overkill on shipping box size that perhaps unnecessarily kicked it into an extra-extra oversize category. So, unless one really values their time a whole lot, it is a lot cheaper to at least pack it yourself. And these 3rd party shipping centers do not make money by charging you what UPS charges, they add on their own charges. Although I can't say for sure if the official "UPS Store" franchises cost more than going directly to the UPS distribution center. I myself am fortunate that the local UPS distribution center is only about a 15 minute drive away. I could drop a box off at a "Mailboxes Etc." that's only 3 minutes away, but I know it would cost me several dollars more every time (the only time I've used those type of places is during a trip when I need to ship my model stuff back home, and it indeed costs more). - George Gassaway RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. At > that point UPS became very expensive, relatively speaking He's right and I was told that they re-structured their oversized rate. They use to charge for 30lbs. if your package was oversized, but it jumped to 70lbs a few years ago. I was told by UPS that the majority of business was 5lb. to 10lb. small packages from all of the E-commerce, so they structured their rate to account for how many of those packages would fit in the volume occupied by a single oversize package. They set it up so they would make the same $$ for a comparable shipping volume. FedEx bought out or contracted RPVI trucking for their ground division and their rate is similar to the UPS rate of 5 years ago. I have had good service from them. [RCSE] Shipping, Airlines and Sportube..woes
Hi guys, A relatively new development is that they have lately been messing with my Sportube...AFTER it has been inspected and reclosed...along the way. I stood with the TSA inspector on four seperate occassions, and they inspected and reclosed and relocked my Sportube, but when it got to the destination the lock was missing and the tube was free to slide open. I demanded a TSA manager and a United luggage Manager to be together in order to figure out what it was going to take for me to comply with their needs and interests. Also my Sportube is getting beat the crap on each trip. The bottom corners caved in and the wheel axle bent. United guy said file a claim, bring it in and they will send it out for repairs (stupid cuz there's no way they can fix what is damaged) and TSA says that once the luggage is inspected and sealed (with my lock or a TSA Aprroved lock from Home Depot, it has combination rollers on it edge and a common TSA key on its bottom) ..once it is sealed in my presence it is never opened again. Neither could explain why the locks end up missing and they all have a form to fill out, which in the end spells out that they are only authorized to apologize, not actually do anything about it. I have had two instances of actual TSA inspector vandalism (holes poked in the carbon wing and a broken vertical) so the Sportube has been protecting the contents perfectly against conveyors and packingbut not from people. I am going to try the TSA lock thing, its pretty small or at least the one I saw at HD is so far and not sure it will fit the Sportube. I'll keep looking for others though. DHL ships the Sportube really well for going to contests...for about $16 I think. I'll keep this thread updated.Gordy Louisville today, Mass Sunday...as in the state :-)

RE: [RCSE] shipping
I used to ship everything via UPS ground. After they computerized their shipping outlets, two things happened: First, every package got charged for the full rate including oversize rates, excess length charge, special handling fee, etc. Prior to computerization the person accepting the package was responsible for knowing which rates to charge. Almost always the people working the counter had no clue what the correct rates were and would just weigh the box and charge only the straight rate based on weight only. With the computerized system they just measure three dimensions of every package and enter that into the computer. The computer charges the appropriate rate and never misses any of the aforementioned charges. So UPS got a lot more expensive after they got computerized but at least the shipping charge became predictable. A short time after the computerized system became effective, "phase two" kicked in. That was an increase in shipping rates of all sorts. Not just the base rate but things like the over length fee which went from $5 to $7. At that point UPS became very expensive, relatively speaking and I decided to check out Fedex ground/ Fedex home delivery. Fedex was way cheaper and they also operated out of my local Kinkos only one block away from home. The Fedex Kinkos is just a Fedex location operating out of the Kinkos store. It charges the same rates as the "regular" Fedex location. In fact I was even able to set up a Fedex account and print shipping labels on my computer at home. All I do is drop off the packages at the Fedex Kinkos, no waiting in line. You could probably set up a UPS account and ship via local UPS stores also but for now UPS is a lot more expensive. That may change in the future. UPS may be forced to lower rates due to the competition. Also, Fedex may begin to raise rates once they have more fully established their ground system. I have shipped hundreds of packages including oversized ones and never had to deal with this, so I can assume it doesn't happen to every shipment. Paying an extra $40.00 per shipment just for protection is still not worth it in my opinion. Mark, The cost is not 3 to 5 times what it should be, it sounds like it is 3 to 5 times more than you want to pay. I spent probably close to 2 to 3 hours dealing with UPS to file my claim plus the receiver spent time as well taking the package back to UPS. If you figure even $10.00/hr (I do not work that cheap at my day job)that would have saved me $20-$30 bucks on the shipment right there by going to the UPS Store. Also, the last time I used them to ship a plane, they boxed it, insured and shipped to CA from KS for ~ $60.00. They furnished the box and all packing materials, was open on a Saturday and were conveniently located to my house, so it was worth every penny. My customer was more than happy to pay it since he got a nice pristine plane when the big box arrived. I will gladly pay the difference for the peace of mind in the future. He reported that it is amazing anything arrives without damage. Most noteworthy is the automated device that moves boxes from one conveyor belt to the next. Boxes come in on the main conveyor, and are sorted onto other conveyors. The boxes are shifted onto the other conveyors by means of a device he described as a boot-on-a-stick. The boxes tumble on the the destination conveyor from the elevated main conveyor. Since boxes come in all shapes and sizes, this is apparently the most efficient method. Apparently it doesn't work well with luggage, as it is too soft, as the required kicking force in that case is high enough to cause significant damage. On the same note, the differing sizes resulted in more damage from boxes getting stuck creating a log jam on the conveyors. I can imagine a long boxed airplane would be the cause of many such log jams, especially where the conveyor system curves. Reminds me of a tech start-up I once worked for, where one person was tasked with testing packaging after a high unit DOA. For at least a week he kicked and threw a shipping container up and down 24 flights of stairs. The container was unpacked and checked for functionality. This was repeated a few more times before new shipping containers were created that surrounded the item with thick foam rubber. Loose material like peanuts shifted and bubble wrap burst. I've also seen a 30" self-aiming satellite dish that was shipped to Canada from somewhere in Yugoslavia. It took 2 techs over a day to extricate the dish and gear from the wooden shipping container. Every single item was bolted to the box, and was a structural part of it. There had to be more bolts than there are rivets in the Eiffel tower. Quite impressive package engineering. Zero damage of course. I didn't bother to ask about the shipping and handling charges on this one! -- Andrew E. Mileski RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] another glider radio
LiftZone has a nice overview of the Futaba 9C Super radio. It has some new features more friendly to glider pilots. http://www.rcgroups.com/links/index.php?id=4600 A few prices at Tower. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0091P?&C=JQR&V=FUT I have not found any manuals online yet at http://www.futaba-rc.com Looks like these new features take out some of the major annoyances of the 9C for glider pilots: - can setup so butterfly is active always (no switch) - can have 4 flight modes. Futaba calls them conditions. With separate camber, ail diff, trims, etc. We REALLY have a lot to choose from these days, regardless of brand preference. Seems nearly all of the major manufacturers now have full-house glider friendly TX's for well under $500. Jon RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] What Brown Did for Me (The Outcome)
I recently got an inside "look" at UPS operations thanks to my son David. David is a college student and just got a job with UPS part time evening in Harrisburg PA. He works about 4-5 hour shifts. His job is to off load the conveyor belts and scan and load tractor trailers at the hub in Harrisburg (one of the largest). He said there is no time to even read any labels cautions, this side up, or top load markings, (I know this and do it anyway mostly for my customers piece of mind), any way, he said the conveyors go so fast they end up dumping the parcels in a heap faster than they can possibly be scanned and loaded. He reported to me last evening that he recorded a personal best record, 1400 parcels scanned and loaded on his shift. He typically loads 2-4 semis at one time. It is a job for the young, whew... The company treats its college students very well actually, and David will qualify for a $1300.00 grant compliments of UPS at the end of the semester. Certainly the work alone is enough to encourage higher education. Moral of the story, pack better, or delegate as you mentioned. RE: [RCSE] What Brown Did for Me (The Outcome)
Glad you got satisfaction Pat. The problem isn't just "brown" though, as we all know. I ordered one of the Mini-Flacons from Tom Copp at F3X. It got here, via USPS Priority Mail, and the box was crushed in several places. Inside, there was damage to the wing to the point that the skin was actually "torn" at the end of the aileron. I called Tom and he sent out a second plane immediately (cool). That box also came in the same condition...crushed. However, the 2nd plane survived a bit better than the 1st one. I still have issues with the plane but that's a different issue. Tom's on vacation now so I won't be able to resolve things until the end of the month. The way you handled your claim was the correct response although, for what we pay in shipping charges/insurance coverage, you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get satisfaction. -Sheldon- -Original Message- From: Pat McCleave [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 08, 2004 12:51 AM To: RCSE Subject: [RCSE] What Brown Did for Me (The Outcome) Guys, I thought I would follow up with how my dealings with UPS went after they broke my Fusion in half. I of course immediately started the claim process as soon as I found out the shipment had been damaged. I asked the receiver to take the plane to the local UPS Store for inspection. The UPS Store basically taped up the package and shipped it back to me and filed the necessary paperwork with the claims department. A couple of days later a representative called me and informed me that they were rejecting the claim as I expected them to do. I kept a calm demeanor (which was very hard for me) and started talking to representative about the way the plane was packaged and the extent of the damage to the box and to the plane and he decided to call the receiver and talk to him as well about the packing, the box damage and the plane damage. He decided after talking to both of us that the box had been "Handled Beyond Normal and Customary UPS Handling" and decided to honor the claim. He then sent me an official claim form and asked for me to attach proof of value for the items. This is where things got a little tricky since Fred did not have a website showing the plane and it's replacement costs and they would not accept and email from Fred as proof. Luckily I was able to find what I needed on Don Richmond's Hilaunch site. UPS will also allow the use of like items so I was able to get info for the RES wings by using a copy off of NESP's site for a replacement Victory Wing. The servos were easy thanks to JR's and Hitec's websites. Once all that information was faxed into the claim rep he called me again and told me check would be cut and mailed within 10 working days. Well today the check arrived for the total amount of the insured value plus my shipping costs. It took right at about 3 weeks from report of damage to receiving the check. The nice thing is I got to keep the plane so I can at least try to salvage the fuse and RES wings. I am not sure if the flap aileron wings are worth trying to salvage except for the servos. I found the people at UPS were very nice and helpful and one very common response with everyone I talked to was "I am very sorry for the inconvenience this had caused you". Bottom line, is Brown really did work for me. Any future shipments though with UPS will be through one of their UPS stores where I will let them pack and ship the items for me. They guarantee a total hassle free experience on any damaged shipment that they pack and ship from their Company Stores. Well I have rambled on long enough.
