[RCSE] Re:Winch Line

2005-03-03 Thread AMA3655
Bruce -

I've bought a lot of winch line over a long time span from Memphis Net and
Twine. There have been a couple times over the years that I've gotten a bad
batch of line. It's rare, but it does happen. You can usually spot a bad piece
of line if you look and feel close. The bad line I have gotten has had spots
in it that had obviously been hot - you could feel and see the line had been
melted a little bit here and there. If you can see this in a new spool of line
call the company and let them know, they will probably take care of you.

And be sure to check your equipment - a bad turnaround will do the same
thing. I've also managed to string the turnaround upside down, that will eat
line
in a hurry.

happy trails - Rob G

From: "Bruce Hobbs" [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED])

Myself and our club have purchased 270-290# nylon braided line from
Memphis Twine previously. We have experienced line breaks quite often on
a smooth field within 3-6 months of the new line installation. This is
without Icons and Sharons doing banzai launches! When I purchased my
Rahm winch new, the line Mr. Rahm sent with the winch did not break more
than once or twice within the first two years and was used more often
then than now.
I have heard that line available in some of the Scandinavian countries
is more durable and lasts longer..possibly refined and improved from
exposure to the extensive fishing industry that many of these countries
have?
If any of you know of a line that is better. reasonable priced..and
available..I'd love to hear about it. JoJo..that is your neck of the
woods if you are reading this. TIA!!

Re: [RCSE] Hitec Digi Servo burn out! Again...

2005-03-03 Thread Ben Diss
It's pretty odd that you've had failures of now four servos (I think) in
the exact same servo pockets. It feels like more than a coincidence. I
wouldn't put ANY servo in that airplane until I figured it out. Likely
that whatever you put in there next will fail to.

I personally would use heavier gauge wire and rebuild the wiring harness
myself.

I just can't seem to spend money on something I can make..
I don't think it's the wiring harness. I think it's the servos them

But I figured Hay, "what the heck" I got this 5 meter Ship I should use

I have always used Volz servos in the past but with the difference

I hate to say it But...I think Gordy is RIGHT when he tells us

[RCSE] FS: Compulsion

2005-03-03 Thread docdata757

I'm selling my Compulsion, reluctantly but its the right thing to do.

It has a 123" SD7037 wing and is an absolute gem in the air!
Included are all the servos and the battery pack. Add your RX and go
fly.

It has 2 JR321 servos for rudder and elevator, 2 JR 341's for
ailerons and 2 JR DS 368 digitals for the flaps. Also include is the
Rx pack and a Hoopes harness. Wings are plug in with no messing with
any connections! I'lll send the heavy wing rod too that is used to
balast the plane. It has a light aluminum wing rod for normal use.

Now, this plane has been flow a lot. The fuze had some traditional
stress cracking just ahead of the leading edge of the wing which I
wrapped with strapping tape. Flight characteristics were never
compromised.

Here are some links to the full aircraft...

Here is a link showing the tape wrapping of the area I was talking
about...

New, and it is not, all this went for about $970.

I am selling this for $500 shipped anywhere in the continental US.

[RCSE] Adding side mounts to servos.

2005-03-03 Thread Harley Michaelis
I'm toying with the idea of adding side mounts of 1/4" angle brass to servos
for flat mounting to rails on a base.

The question is. . .what is a suitable adhesive?
One stuck on with instant CA came off too easily. I have one curing with
Goop and another with Gorilla glue.

Anyone have any other adhesive in mind that might bond brass to a servo
case?

Les was so excited about his find that he had to call me. The way he
describes things sometimes leaves me guessing. I wondered how he cooked
those eggs in the pan that had epoxy in it. Finally, he made it clear that
he had the epoxy in a plastic plate, not actually in the pan.

When he writes, you have to look at the words in terms of his native
Hungarian tongue. BTW, the written word "went" would be pronounced "vent"
same as in German. Les really knows what he is talking about and makes up
for any deficiences with his enthusiasm for passing on things he's learned.
Way to go, Les!

vent to Wall-Mart and looked around what can I use for my hobby. It
just happened I was standing in the pots and pens isle. As I looked
I see an electric pan for $19 bucks (West Bend). Right away somebody
wispered in my ears that is the perfec solution to keep my epoxy
warm! I shelled out the $19 bucks and driving home 80 miles per hour
to try it out. At the lowest setting it is exactly 80 deg. The next

[RCSE] FS: Stratos fuze, stab & sleeves

2005-03-03 Thread docdata757

I'm selling the TD fuselage for the Stratos SL TD sailplane. It has
an X-Tail and the stab as well as fuze/stab sleeves are included.
The elevator servo is a JR DS 368 digital. The rudder servo is a
HS85MG. Also included is a 2000 mah NiMH Rx battery pack, the switch
and charging harness and 2 uinstalled ballast tubes.

Below are links to photos. The condition is almost perfect. There is
a little scuffing under the nose from normal landings. This has
NEVER been crashed or even landed hard. I am keeping the wing for
use on my Stratos SLe fuselage.

Items for sale...

The RX shown is not included.

Contacted Dieter at Shred Air and he quoted $275 for the fuze, $100
for the stab and $25 for the sleeves by special order. That's $400
list without including the servos and battery pack!

$325 shipped anywhere in the continental US.

Re: [RCSE] Hitec Digi Servo burn out! Again...

2005-03-03 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen
What is the Ventus wingspan?
Which manufacturer is this?
Do the control surfaces have a large mass associated with them?
How long are the O/P arms versus their mating link at the control surface?
How long had the system been sitting idling when you first observed a noise?

Most likely the first failure would have pulled the system V down to the point
where it reset the rest of the servos. By reset I mean there is a threshold
with digitals that if the V falls below, the onboard uprocessor will re-boot.
This however does not explain why one servo has been driven to it's
limits...and sitting there burning up. A possible programming error?

Maybe THIS servo is what caused failures. If at ALL there is excessive servo
buzzing, for whatever reason, actually ANY digital servo trying to achieve a
position it will never get to...you need to turn off the system and find out
why. Otherwise you inveriably will overheat, and let out the magic smoke. It
will not be difficult for those who are servicing the servos to see evidence of
this! New servos will have no brush wear, the armatures will have zero wear,
yet the brush assemblies will show signs of heat-stress or outright failure.
Abuse of this type can not be hidden.

It should have been evident after the mass failure previously experienced on
your Ventus with these servos, that this is not a servo problem.

What size packs, 4 or 5 cell?

As far a regulators go, if you are using no more than 5cells (NiCD or NiMH),
you do not need one. However, if the servos are already working overtime just
to hold the control surface weight (as implied) while idle, a higher operating
V will contribute to an overheating situation sooner. Even in this case there
little difference form the servo's POV whether they see an unregulated 5cell
pack V, or a slightly lower regulated V (measure at the sero...).

If you insist on using a regulator, it needs to be between the switch and the
RX. Otherwise it will run your supply down, and you will not be able charge to
charge.

It sounds like the servos (digital in this case) are being overtaxed with just
the load of the control surface.

Are they buzzing noticeably while idle?
Are you experiencing excessive jitter as a result of running them for an
extended period of time?

Excessive jitter, usually from things like appliances, flourescent lighting,
and other household eletricals can produce noise which makes the servos work
harder than if they were actually in their operating environment...outside at
the field in the air. In fact the RX's AGC circuit can be swamped by the TX by
just being in close proximity. This can also create excessive jitter.

The blue box(!) is just different packaging, no conspiracy. I have received
both. How does the packaging indicate these particular servos are different,
let alone "bad"?

As was pointed out last time, it is possible the servos are not appropriate for
this particular configuration. This is not the servos fault. An analog (geez I
hate this terminology) servo like previous Volz (or other similar product) will
not experience the extra loads imposed on the motor/brush assembly (read as
heat build-up) due to the ~300Hz update rate (what we erroneously have elected
to call "digital").

Again, it sounds like the servos in this case are not up to the task being
demanded of them...in your particular set-up anyways. maybe compare notes with
the chap who is using these without issue on (apparently) the very same
aircraft. Good luck, please let us know what you find...

Re: [RCSE] Winch Line

2005-03-03 Thread Phil Barnes
There is something else you might want to check also. The ESL winches were
suffering from a lot of line breaks a couple years ago. It turned out that
the winch line drums had some nicks on the inside edges of the flanges.
These nicks were cutting the line as the line got realed in. A little quick
work with a file or sandpaper did wonders to cut down on line break
problems. You might consider checking for this or similar conditions on your
winches. The line could be getting cut at the turnaround for instance.

Re: [RCSE] Keeping Epoxy Warm

2005-03-03 Thread Bill Swingle
The walmart electric skillet sounds like a good idea. However, I've found
the epoxy takes a while to heat. It's more convenient to me if I can keep
the epoxy warm all the time.

My solution is to use a small icechest or cooler. The size that holds only
about a six pack. Then I just put a little 4watt light bulb into the cooler.
Presto, it's always warm and costs nearly nothing.

[RCSE] Winch Line

2005-03-03 Thread Bruce Hobbs

Myself and our
club have purchased 270-290# nylon braided line from Memphis Twine previously.
We have experienced line breaks quite often on a smooth field within 3-6 months
of the new line installation. This is without Icons and Sharons doing
banzai launches! When I purchased my Rahm winch new, the line Mr. Rahm sent
with the winch did not break more than once or twice within the first two years
and was used more often then than now.

I have heard that line available in some of the Scandinavian
countries is more durable and lasts longer….possibly refined and improved
from exposure to the extensive fishing industry that many of these countries
have?

If any of you know of a line that is better…
reasonable priced….and available….I’d love to hear about it. JoJo….that
is your neck of the woods if you are reading this.   TIA!!

Hi Ben

I get my twisted wire 22 AWG from George Joy @ Peak
Electronics.
I use multiplex connectors.
I use Unassembled Gold plated
connectors from Custom Electronics.  Jo Joy  George's wife @ Peak
Electronics.
I cut off the factory plugs from the servos and
solder direct to the harness.  I never use a on /off
switch.   But if I do use a switch.
I buy a Switch Jack from Dieter @
Shredair.  I never had one of those fail !
So as you can see I build m own wiring
harness.
I never had a problem with the wiring harness I
build in any of my planes.
I just can't seem to spend money on something I can
make..
I don't think it's the wiring harness.  I
think it's the servos them self. This is the first plane I ever used Digi servo
in because I never thought I needed them..
But I figured Hay, "what the heck" I got this 5
meter Ship I should use good stuff in it.
I have always used Volz servos in the past but with
the difference between the dollar /euro there out of my price range
now...
I hate to say it But...I think Gordy is RIGHT
when he tells us they use cheep brushes in our
servo motors!

I have never had such problems with any Non
Digi servo out there .

As long as you want to receive the digest form of RCSE, there is nothing you
can do about it. The only solution is for writers to make sure their e-mail
program only sends plain text. This has come up more times than I can
count. Don't expect the problem to go away any time soon.

I've had nothing but great success with Hitech digitals. My gut feel: something
in the wiring or elsewhere is creating your problems. Were it the servos, you'd
be hearing the same complaints from lots of other fliers.

RE: [RCSE] Hitec Digi Servo burn out! Again...

2005-03-03 Thread John Derstine

OK:

So you buy a $1500.00 molded plane,
spending money to fly it safely should not be a primary concern. You have a 5
meter 26 pound aircraft here. It will fly at high speeds.

 While in theory the Hitecs
should work, I would not use what you have specked out in anything over a 4
meter class ship of considerably less value.

 This not a Hitec bash
per se. Hitec digital servos are fine at six volts, (and the high end
standard digitals are good quality). It is more the application.

You don’t need a regulator. And
some servos don’t like them.

 personally JR DS368
or DS3421’s, or applicable Airtronics servos
would be a better investment in my opinion. Reference your investment in
airframe. What is it worth to you?

But I don’t think this is your issue.

Sorry, In case I missed something along
the way, I assume you are installing the servos with out hooking them up to the
control surfaces first, checking that the travel matches the available surface
deflection before hooking up and turning on the radio. Do the surfaces move
freely??

Second, I question the battery and
switches and possibly your wiring (if you hard wired your servos for example). Initially
I don’t think the servos are the problem here, from the sound of your
notes. New batteries, quality switches, rx?
all correctly wired?? Sounds like a short, or mis wired something.

Check the simple stuff first.

[RCSE] Hitech digi burnout

2005-03-03 Thread Richard O'Connell

Al,

I have exactly the same model with exactly the same servos, batteries are two four cell 2000 mah NMh packs with a battery backer to manage the power.  The model has been up and flying for close to a year with the only problem being the some what lame retract exploding on a "not as soft as it should have been landing".

If you are trying to use the "kit supplied control surface linkage" that may be part of the problem, way too sloppy and binds up way too often. I know of several people with this model that gave up on the stock linkage and went to the old tried and true TD model solution with the control rod outside of the wings.

Good Luck

Ive not heard so much about burnout on the 5125s as I have
heard about the gears stripping, they strip if you just look at em wrong!
Perhaps there are some high resistance joints/connections in your
harness/connectors/etc.  I lost several DS368s in a short time due to loose
plugs/faulty connections.  I bypassed plugs and hardwired servos into wings
and have had no problems since.

Now that we've discussed this at length, has anyone noticed that the

But actually, isn't that just about the perfect wing retention device
for this application? Suitably sized, a rare earth magnet setup would
shrug off a minor hit (wing drag or whatever) but would allow you to
pull the wing apart with minor effort once the initial bond was broken.
Plus wing rigging becomes truly "plug and play" if you have automatic
servo connections.

The rare earth magnets I have exhibit quite impressive and sufficient
magnet force at a distance of 1/2" - 1" to make re-seating after a minor
separation completely automatic. I suspect a disturbance that displaces
the wing further than that will have also had dire consequences for the
entire airframe, and that wing separation will be the least of my worries.

Or so it would seem, anyways :)

RE: [RCSE] Hitec Digi Servo burn out! Again...

2005-03-03 Thread Barrett Stridiron
I seem to recall that some regulators are not recommended for use with Hitec
digital servos.

I've had a set of 4 5245s in an Ultimate bipe for well over two years now -
two on ailerons, one each on rudder and elevator (pull-pull). Power comes
from a 4-cell 1200 mAh NIMH pack.
-0- problems.

The only one I have in a sailplane drives the elevator of my 2M Starship.
Power there is a 5-cell 1650 NIMH pack. No regulator. Its been there for
quite some time with no problems.

[RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #5247

2005-03-03 Thread ALNephew

Hi Eddie,

Fred Mallett seems to have dropped out of sight of sailplaners since about
2000 or 2001. I communicated with him by email and phone a number of times
before that (I got into sailplanes in 1997), and thought we might get together
to fly since he has (had?) relatives not far south of here (Duluth,
Minnesota) in Solon Springs, Wisconsin. But the last time I spoke with him
by phone (he was in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the time), he told me he was
selling most or all his stuff and not kitting planes anymore. He sold it to
Bryan Buass, Northridge, CA, who radically modified the Epsilon, then designed
the Raptor DLG, which he is probably still making. I have one of his
Epsilons which I modified into a DLG. It worked, but then I bought an
Encore kit. That took care of any interest in other DLGs for a while.

Regarding your wing problem, I didn't have the same problem with my
Epsilons I got from Fred. You might have gotten a couple of wings that hadn't
been glued up in the bag quite correctly. One of mine did short the contacts on
a 13000 volt transformer on a pole at the side of the field I fly on 100 meters
from my house. Huge ball of fire resulted, and small pieces of burning stuff was
all that got to the ground.

I made my Epsilon wings two-piece following the instructions Fred had
published in RCSD. Worked great. I also put RDS in the second one, but used .032
wire, which turned out to be too twisty (use .045 or so, I'd say). The Epsilon
would be a great sloper. I used to use mine for that when the winds were not
strong at the slope.

Incidentally, Eddie, I'm coming to Australia in July. My wife has a
Montessori teacher conference in Sydney around the 18th. We don't have tickets
yet, but were thinking of going to Northern NZ first and driving south about as
far as possible in the South Island, then flying from there to Sydney some days
before the conference, then after the conference getting around to see the
sights as well. I'm thinking of bringing along my Genie LT/S, and one or two
DLGs. Maybe I should bring a sloper as well, What do you think?  Any
suggestions and advice you might have would be much appreciated.

I've been reading with great interest the posts by Gordy. I'd like to be
able to visit one or two of the flying sites he did. Perhaps there won't be any
contests in the middle of your winter, but the weather will be warmer than
during the winter here in Duluth (low this morning -20 degrees C, and officially
65 cm. of snow on the ground at the weather station). Heck, winter in some
places in central and south Australia isn't much colder than high summer here in
Duluth.

Looking forward to meeting you and other Down Under sailplaners
if possible--

Al

Multiplex had some machined positive lock connectors for this once upon

Personally, I use vinyl electrical tape. Cheap. Plentiful. Comes in
an assortment of colors. Donesn't lift covering or paint either.
Guess I'm low-tech :)

[RCSE] Attention LSF members

2005-03-03 Thread James C Deck

As you know, each LSF officer may only
serve two consecutive terms.  At the end of this year, my 2nd term as LSF
Secretary will come to an end.  I am therefore asking any LSF members
interested in placing their names in the LSF officers election upcoming this
Fall for the position of secretary to contact me.  I have prepared a
lengthy document that details the work involved with this position  and
would be glad to email it to genuinely interested persons.  I'll also be
available for face-to-face discussion at the Toledo show (just check the LSF
booth) and at the NATS next summer.  This is a volunteer position that,
while, at least in my opinion, is most rewarding, does require a significant
amount of time and effort.  It is an opportunity to give something back to
the hobby which has given us so much.  Please give it serious consideration
and, if interested, contact me.

Thanks for your consideration,

Re: [RCSE] Epsilon HLG ...

2005-03-03 Thread Bill Swingle
The Epsilon was a good flying plane. But it was fragile. I haven't heard if
the aileron model was any more so but I don't think it was. The plane was
just easy to break. Don't know about Fred. Haven't heard from him since
about '98.

But, that doesn't mean you can't have a bunch of fun with the plane
anywhere!

Just don't: Pull down at the end of your javelin launch, or collide with any
solid objects like rocks or the ground. :-)

Re: [RCSE] Rare earth magnets as wing retention devices?

2005-03-03 Thread Paul Emerson
Good point. It is overkill, and as soon as the magnets are separated a
little bit, they lose most functionality. Also remember that these
magnets are (relatively) easy to slide apart, so if the plane part in
question is sheard off - it will just slide away. Their real force is
felt when separating them in a perpendicular fashion.

I have been toying with the idea of using them as canopy hold-downs,
but will they affect the componants in proximity to the magnets (RX,
servos, etc . . )?

Again, I have used them on a 100" 3 piece, lightweight sailplane wing.
But I did use a little tape too - to cover the gap and relieve my fear
of there being nothing but magnetic force holding them together.
