RE: [RCSE] "Barry Kennedy Vrs Others..a personal experience"

2005-04-09 Thread Tuan Le
Title: Message

I got quite a
bit of flack for posting this as I know many are Barry's
friends.
I was not intending to do anything more than
get a response from Barry to let me know what is going on. I sympathize with the canine scenario, but even that
didn't take over 2 weeks. Maybe some people can put up with a straight
lie or two, but I can't. In my business, when I tell a customer to expect
something and it doesn't come to fruition, I know I better get on the the horn to let
them know. No excuses. And never, never would I tell them something that I don't
know if I can deliver or not.
I've learn that mistakes will happen, but it's how we handle it that tells
people if we care.

If my posting hurt's Barry's
business, I apologize. BUT IT IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Well not quite. I had ordered Mar 22, not just 2 weeks
ago. Was told I should receive last week. That is all I expect.
My 2 calls that got through to him have been very very
polite and full of understanding. My 10
other calls went unanswered.

When I
get no response, I feel like maybe because I am not in the circle of friends, I
am insignificant to deal with. If that is so, do not do business with me. He
doesn't have to deal with me. But by accepting my money, he has agreed to,
whether he knows it or not, to at least acknowledge me as a customer.
Am I wrong to ask this? May be
so, but I have paid my funds and do come to expect at least some common
courtesy. Or am I in the wrong business?
Maybe I should start in the hobby. Take the orders, collect the funds, and
ship at my convenience. Oh, and maybe take care of close friends first.

I do regret having to post this as I got some idiotic responses, but alas, it
has gotten results. I got a call from Barry tonight to tell me all have been
packed and will ship out tomorrow. If it is so, I will write and post for all
that he came through, even if a little late.

And to the
bone head who told me to get a Gentle Lady ARF as I seem like a newbie, my AMA
is 327694, what's yours? BTW I have a Full House Topaz for sale, send me the
money and I will have it out "tomorrow" :).

Tuan Le

First, you can truncate your AMA by becoming a CD, mine is
1394, two digits dropped when I became a CD formerly 139444.

Here is a question that I have been curious about. I
originally joined the AMA in 1958 as a boy, I let it lapse until later in life
and re-enrolled. My old number was lost forever. I am just curious whether
anyone has a clue what the numbers where running in 1958? Idle curiosity fueled

I wish everyone would back off on Tuan Le's
complaints.  Are they out of order for what has happened to him?  Not
in my book.

I have personal experience on 2 orders from
him, and personally know of 5 other orders, that were treated similarly.
The orders never showed up when he said, and emails & phones suddenly went
silent.

As a vendor, customer expectations on
delivery time are set entirely by Barry.  From my experience he likes to
pass on the rosiest of scenarios to his customers (me
included).

I too, believe Barry is an honest business
person, but I wish he would manage customer expections better.  All it
takes is a phone call or email saying

"Hi there.  I promised I'd ship your
plane on XX date.  Well, YY happened, and I now expect to ship your plane
on ZZ date.  Sorry for the delays.  Just want you to be informed on

I wish Barry the best in his business, as

There isn't just one good plane available at the
moment.  Yes, I know the Ava is a great plane but if you are having such a
tough time why not be open to other good, high performance planes like the
Ava.  Have you considered the Soprano from Isthmus Models?  It's a
beauty and it's winning contests.  It's a newer model so maybe you have
never seen one before.  Here's the URL: http://www.isthmusmodels.com/pages/soprano.html
Mark Miller offers this model.  I can tell you from first hand experience
that he is a pleasure to do business with.

Dave Edmunson sells a model similar to the
Ava.  It's called the Ukrainian Buzzard.  I don't have Dave's web URL
but his e-mail address is:  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dave is an old free flight champ who helped develop the Buzzard.

Both of these guys will respond quickly to your
needs.

Frankly, I've done business with Barry Kennedy
before and always found him to be helpful and reliable but since it sounds like
Traun is about to see the top of his head blow clean off his shoulders I thought
this might be of interest.

One thing though that Traun and other yelpers ought
to know.  This is a hobby.  It is not life or death.  The people
that supply these models to you are modelers themselves.  They have jobs,
families and other time constraints.  You are not dealing with large
companies with a staff to help.  The bitchers and complainers are the
reason that many of these people throw in the towel and say;  "to hell with
this business.  I can't stand dealing with the jerks.  I'm closing up
shop."

It only takes a few impatient, immature, short
tempered, whiners to screw things up.
Give Barry a break why don't you and if you can't
do that cancel your order and get something else but please save your anger for
when it's really important.  Life is too short.

Of course that's just my opinion.

Woops, sent it by accident before finishing it. I was trying to get someone at AOL to tell me again how to keep my post from printing a second time mostly gibberish and clicked by accident on the wrong part of my post-in-construction.

When I got back into model planes in the early 1990s I asked the AMA for my original number, 12118, which I got in the 1950s. They were happy to give it to me. More recently, when I became a CD they asked me if I wanted to truncate my number to 4 digits: 2118. I declined because I like my original number. It's only one digit different, and I won't have to change the IDs on planes I have. That was fine with them too.

To those of you who have flown a Photon II:

How did you attach the outer panels to the center section, tape, glue?

Did you do each side the same?

Having done this, which method would you use next time?

[RCSE] Soaring Today

2005-04-09 Thread James V. Bacus
Well, it was windier than predicted, but still the warmest day we have seen
this year. When I got to the field McCarthy had his new Ferrari red Sharon
Pro X tail out, Charley had his Hera out and I brought out my nasty old
ICON that Daryl is so fond of. 8-)

A couple of bungee launches found us working pretty good air, but I wanted
to do some zooms. Jimbo said he had his F3B winch with him so we strung it
out. 10 - 15mph wind, F3B winch, big 'ole Trojan battery and mono means
ZOOM. What a blast, put a tube in the ICON and only popped Jimbo's mono
once. 8-) TK showed up and started sharing the Sharon with Jimbo every
time that LJ called which was about every 5 minutes today. 8-) It was
during one of these intermissions that I asked TK for the sticks, I wanted
to try Jimbo's new toy. TK has this thing specked and in very good air,
like screaming good air. So I start feeling it out, and went right into
ThermalLooping it at high speed in the strong air. I hear Jimbo in the
background, "gotta go, call you back, gotta go... OK, NOW YOU GOT MY
ATTENTION"

heh heh heh 8-)
Actually a very nice toy, stiff and faster than I thought they were, I had
never flown the X tail version of the Sharon before.

I got one more launch on my ICON before Jimbo packed up the winch. I kept
flying it, gave it to TK and he flew the crap out it doing F3B runs
continuously in the big air. Then he gave it back to me, I bet Jimbo has
made it all the way home and we are still flying the crap out of this huge air.

Eventually we thought better of pushing the batteries too far and landed
it, what a day.

Anybody else get some today?

New Furio maidened today here in SoCal. Didn't bring the F3B winch,
since this was just initial tuning, CG fiddling, etc, so I flew off the
club AMA winch. Some wind, maybe 10 MPH with the occasional gust
higher. Once the hook position was set, got some monster launches, even
with non-stretchy braided line. Got a reasonable starting point for
more fine-tuning.

A club mate was doing likewise with his new X21.

OK, those of you who fly PCM - what's your preference on fail safe
settings (Hold Last Input, or Preset)? My inclination is to have

something.

Don't want to ignite a debate on why PPM is better...presume the

My first AMA number was 20511 in about 1957. Later as a Contest Director my

L96 - it reads the same regardless of direction.

I suspect I did not make it clear as to why I was asking the question, which
makes a good answer difficult. So, option one, removeable tape to allow
disassembling the wing into three pieces; or option two, epoxy and glass
tape for a permanent one-piece wing.

So far, two votes for tape only and one for epoxy and tape (glass I
presume).
The epoxy person didn't feel the need for a break-down wing.

Epoxy between the two wing half's Not to muchThan when dry..
Use epoxy and .75oz glass x 1" tape wrapped around the leading edge to

with epoxy and blot with toilet paper to keep it light now..
hope this helped..

Re: [RCSE] PCM failsafe - which position?

2005-04-09 Thread Lee Cox

This is a point that I have been looking for an answer for also.

My question>> Why would it not be better to have your plane go to full flaps and a little rudder if you loose contact??? That would let you know immediately that something is wrong and keep the plane in a safe flight mode and close ???

Why use a PCM receiver if you don't use the failsafe?? I have heard a lot of pilots don't??
