RE: [RCSE] RE:Fall Fest Requencies? Larry Taylor - CVRC

2005-09-16 Thread chris
Hey Guys, You are vicious! It's like a feeding
frenzie of sharks in a bloodbath!

To let you know, the question was simple and quite fair. I do
not envy the job Larry is doing, no one ever realizes the efforts and
the thankless job. I did it for a LSF tournament and back
then there were no computers to use like nowadays.

However, I would like to know if my registration had been
received. A few years back I sent it in and it never got to Larry
until 2 months AFTER the contest. So when it sounded like we would
know sometime mid-late August, that is nice. I followed the
comments here about two weeks ago, when someone asked then, and I
waited. So now at 2 weeksbeforeit would be nice to
know if I should cancel my reservations or just risk it to come.

And yes, one year I showed up and was asked to change by the CD the
night before. Luckily, I was able to do so.

So I do not think I was asking too much, I was just calmly
asking.

With people entering 2 or 3 classes when one was advertised is OK, I
don't blame the contest officials for adding people as it helps the
overall coffers, but does this hold up the notice? Are the second
and third classes an issue with scheduling?Just wondering.

[RCSE] Duel Solenoids Save Planes

2005-09-16 Thread Cal Posthuma
I just saw a $1000 bird bite the dust a couple weeks ago. The solenoid
stuck and ripped the plane out of the pilots hand and cart wheeled
toward
the turn around.

Two solenoids are not the full answer though. You will need a device
to
detect a bad solenoid before it will bite you.

I have two sound led boxes in stock ready to send you one. At $35 +
insurance $1.60 it is a small price compared to the plane it saves.
The
sound is real sensitive and will warn you of intermittent solenoids as
well.
The bright LEDs tell you which solenoid.

I take paypal, checks, and MO

Re: [RCSE] Foameron memory lane

2005-09-16 Thread Bill Swingle
The skinny years ago was that the Anabat was an awful design not worth
trying to improve The Whirlwind and Visionary were similar foamie type
planes from that time period that actually worked well.

The Foameron was a terrific plane! I had three of them one stock and fast
one with a 7037 foil that was a disappointment, and one that I modified to
be lighter but retained the RG14 foil I called it my floateron. While being
light it'd really scoot with ballast There's a picture of me flying it on my
web site at:

Joe was great guy I've also got a pic of him with an experimental forward
swept wingeron he made called the sweepy on my site. He had long hair back
when it was taken don't know about now:

the Foameron and his HLG called the Bob. Genius designs that were made
with the simplest of materials. Cheap materials, easily constructed yet his
kits performed well. Genius! Plus, he's a talented writer wroting for

As a suggestion, go to Home Depot, or local Hardware store, and get one of
those Cardboard Cement post pouring tubes.

Fairly inexpensive, and all you have to do is make sure the diameter fits
the wing chord or tailfin, and you can cut some plywood ends and screw them
in as inserts.Kinda a one use item, but might work. Mark Smith , and
thatis along time ago, used stovepipe exhausts to do the same thing for his
old windfrees.

BTW, I use the tubes in my 4-runner to side my wings and fuses in when I
am on the road. Cheap, and you can pile stuff on top while still not
crushing the plane parts.

I have a set of old, but new 7037 Super V 100 wings. These were built by the master himself, Mark Levoe. The wings are light for their size due to the type of lay-up he used, but they are certainly strong enough for a spirited ZOOM launch. The tops are white and the bottoms are sort of a dyed red. They look sort of transparent red. Personally Id paint the bottoms but thats certainly up to the new owner.

There are a few minor handling marks, but the wings are plenty strong! $300 shipped.

RE: [RCSE] Re: Bob HLG

2005-09-16 Thread George Voss
I did the review for one of the magazines. It might have been RCSD. Bob
was a very cool little plane. It was perfect for light slope work and entry
level HLG. Thinking about it, if it would have had a hardwood LE on the
wing, it would have been even better. The foam LE took a beating from
things as little as small weeds. Hand catching made the plane fly well,
longer.

I had one of their shirts, which explained the torque and recoil club
motto. Basically anything that has to do with a ball is un-cool. Things
that cause forces on the body, i.e. shooting, race cars, motorcycles, etc
were cool. I wish I still had the shirt!

[RCSE] Retriever Line Connection to Winch Line

2005-09-16 Thread Thomas Koszuta

The retriever that out club has been using has a
setup that uses a flattened ring to connect the retriever line to the winch
line, acting as a slider.

I've personally been using a hard connection of
dual swivels on the retriever line to a ring on the winch line with about 3 feet
to the chute and have had good results, but another user thought that his plane
was near stall just after release and thinks it may be related to the hard
connection instead of the slider.

Thoughts, experience?

[RCSE] Turnin a Foameron into a Floateron

2005-09-16 Thread Bill Swingle
In case any of the three guys who have said they still have a Foameron are
interested here's my written description of how I turned a foameron into a
Floateron. I wrote this around late '96, I was pretty green so forgive my
ignorance. Hey les you want to sell your Foameron kit? I just found some
spare arrow shafts from my old Foameron.

--Floateron-
I built my Floateron because my stock Foameron is heavy. With the lead in
the nose and the vinyl covering and the standard servos the stocker weighs
quite a bit. The weight is 30oz. This puts the wing loading at 11. Higher
than I would like. It takes good wind to fly.

I feel that lightness is very important. Perhaps too much but every one
needs a hangup. I thus decided to make one light. Here's what I did:

1. Called Joe and asked for a longer nose fuselage. He had to cut it in two
pieces because of the limits of his cutter but was able to make a fuse with
a roughly 4 longer nose. It was as long as he could make it with his cutter
I believe. Damn nice guy that Joe.

1a. The longer nose will wrinkle badly without extra support. Ask for some
longer fuse doublers. Then add some extra wood infront of the doublers so
that wood extends to within about 2 of the nose.

2. Get some rudder material from Joe and cut a larger rudder. I have yet to
do this so it's not real important but my feeling is that a rudder roughly
10-20% larger would be useful.

3. Use micro servo for elevator.

3a. Move the elevator servo as far forward possible. I didn't but should
have. The elev push rod seems heavy consider replacing it. I didn't.

4. MAYBE consider using micro for wing. It's a durability issue but a micro
saves about a half ounce (I think) and reduces wingloading about 0.18oz.

5. DON'T use the vinyl. It's heavy. Supremely cool stuff and great for
visibility at distance or when your really carving tight, ugly aerobatics
(am I the only guy who does this?). Also helpful in the durability
department. Also, it's fully UV resistant while the tape isn't. But it's
heavy so don't use it.

6. Move the anchor point of the ball joint on the wings rearward by 1/4. Be
sure to maintain the same distance from the wing spar. The reason is to add
some differential. I am NOT done experimenting with this so start with 1/4
and go from there. A little goes a long way.

7. CG on the LE of the wing spar maybe a 1/16 in front of it. Put the
battery (270mAH assumed) as far forward as possible. Put the receiver a
quarter inch behind it, then the switch. More than a quarter inch would
provide much better crash protection. So it's your choice. Remember adding
tail weight is easy and requires little actual weight so shoot for a little
nose heavy. I tried for perfect and ended up needing two quarters on the
nose (damn). (seems like all my planes have a coin taped somewhere)

8. Reduce the throws. Especially the wings. Use about 60% for the wings and
oh 70% or so for the elev. USE DUAL RATE RADIO and switch back and forth
Frequently. The reduced rate is to make it easier to fly smoothly. Not
really necessary but because of reduced weight the roll rate is poor until
you get some airspeed.

9. Tape the wings with the tape edges touching not overlapping. Tape weight
seems to add up. I have two sets of wings that should be the same but one
set is actually 1oz heavier. The only thing I can guess is the tape.?.

10. Glue the root caps on to the wings. The tape allows rotational movement
which can worsen with use.

11. I don't remember the incidence I use in the wings (4.3 degrees, perhaps)
but it looks like a lot (huge!) to the eye so keep this in mind when setting
up. The goal is to slow it down. With this plane, min sink occurs just above
stall.

12. I increased the incidence of the horizontal stab about 1-2 degrees. This
is a personal preference issue and makes no difference in flight but I think
is esthetically(how is this spelled?) important with larger fuse and bigger
nose.

13. The plane is short coupled when stock. I get the feeling Joe flys like
his hair is on fire. ;-) I don't know if my mods make it even more so but
it seems so. I like it!

14. The RG14 wing does great. The 7037 isn't bad when it's in its element.
For all out floating the 7037 is better but RARELY is it worth it. For
ANYTHING other than all out floating the RG14 is my choice. Rolls are rough
with the 7037 and inverted flight is even harder. IF you want all out
floating get a different plane.

15. By lessening the wing incidence the plane will fly in surprisingly
strong winds and has Very wide flyability window.

Bottomline:
The floateron weighs(these numbers ARE accurate) 22.1oz with the RG14 and
23.1oz with the 7037. A micro wing servo would shave about a half oz easily.
Micro receiver may be helpful I don't have one. It floats with most any
sloper. Then when the wind picks up it will do good aerobatics and be a
bunch of fun. If the wind is good, I add the 4oz rod and it rocks.

Les, if you'd care to sell your old Foameron kit I'd like to buy it. Sure
makes me feel stupid for sending the last kit I had to some guy in South

[RCSE] NorCalF3F Racing 4th Sunday PUSHED OUT

2005-09-16 Thread rich.speroni

Hi Guys,

This time of the year coast conditions have known to be sketchy. I now plan
to use a 2 day weekend window to host races during this time period. I'll be
shooting for the 4th Sunday like always but if Saturday looks better, I'll
go that way.

From Sept. 22 thru Sunday, the 25th there will be a surf board and wind
surfing contest. This contest happens every 5 yrs so it will be a huge event
. Bud, the owner of Big Creek Lumber has decided to open the airport gate
so spectators will have additional parking. Bud also has express concern
with us flying over the spectators heads as they access the beach.

So with the chances of no parking and an all day of the spectators trampling
through our LZ and disrupting our flying zone, I have decided to push out
the race to the next weekend, October 1st, or 2nd.

On Wednesday the 28th of Sept. I'll let you know the day where the venue
will be.

See Ya,

Rich

[RCSE] Cheers OVSS SOAR Chicago travellers

2005-09-16 Thread James V. Bacus
Cheers to all who are either here already, are on the way, or about to
leave soon. The weather is going to be perfect this weekend, the sod farm
is mowed, we have many strong winches to line up, and we are ready to have
fun and fly some seeded MoM, without skegs.

I have a new Weber Genesis Gold grill ready to fire up for a BBQ at my
house Sat. Night on the deck. Many alpha male BBQ chefs will be in
attendance (from far away as Texas), I plan to stand back and just watch
them cook stuff and brag. ;-) Should be a good time, please join Rae and
I at our house after the contest. I will pass out some directions at the
field.

I'm looking forward to hearing a report someday of how a solenoid safety
buzzer, whether home-built or bought from Cal, saved a glider from being
strained through a turn-around. I know it's bound to happen sooner or later.
