BTW, who can recommend a good lost plane finder? I know there are a few on the

The Genie LT/S works as advertised but I haven't been able to maximize it's
potential because I still have just a few hours of flight time with it. I am
also trying to configure a new radio and doing both at a contest, which has
been the only flying the Genie has done, makes it an interesting task.

One aspect of construction I noticed important is a good joint between the
inner and outer panels. With the blade joiners, a lot of stress is put on those
joiner boxes and a bit of slop does develop with heavy launches, as I'm prone
to do. Why, I don't know but I guess I've just got a heavy foot and better
launch management might be in order. The tips do flex a bit but I have never
come close to being concerned about it.

I also am considering adding a bit more down travel to the ailerons at the tip
of the surface, I do notice a bit of sluggishness in a turn and wonder if a bit
more deflection might improve this. Differential right now is a pretty hefty
8-10 to 1 and I don't think I need to worry about adverse yaw, true? Pretty
heavy use of left stick is needed to keep a nice coordinated turn but that's
okay. I actually think my flying has improved greatly by exercising that left
thumb a bit more; starting turns with rudder gives me some good indications
about what the air is doing around me and whether I'm turning into good or bad
air.

I guess I'm still looking to fly this like a handlaunch...:)

Thanks for the efforts with your designs and research, Harley.

Re: [RCSE] Your Genie LT/S

2007-12-03 Thread Harley Michaelis
Jim. . . In the Setup file in the latest web pages or CD I do emphasize
the importance of keeping the tips closely butted to the center to avoid
unwanted bending stresses on the spring steel blades. The flex noted in
the tips is expected. It's the nature of the spring steel to give a
little, but I've never had one take a set from hard launches. The
subject of intentional aero elasticity is discussed in the What's a
Genie file. Fixing any slop that develops between the blades and boxes
is addressed at the end of File 8. Good idea to coat the blades with
paste wax to avoid unintentional bonding of the blades in the boxes.

Sure, experiment with different throws to get the wanted response.

Jr XP9303 Aero/Sailplane TX, with accessories (4 DX821 servos, R790 scan
select pcm rx, 1500 mah NiMh rx pack, switch harness, and wall wart charger
- all accessories are brand new and have never been used). The radio is the
Sail Plane version and comes with the Sail Plane radio manual, but the
switch layout is the same as the aero version. The software is the same
between the Aero/Sail Plane/Heli version.

The TX is in like new shape. It has been my back-up radio and spent its
short life in a padded transmitter case. I did replace the stock NiCad 800
mah TX battery with a NiMh 2000 mah battery. This battery does not self
discharge like higher capacity NiMh TX packs.

I'm offering the entire kit (TX, RX, servos, etc.) and I will even throw in
another RX with it (your choice R790 or (R770 pcm or R700 ppm on #32) ) for
$375 shipped in Continental US, Paypal preferred.

That is about how long it takes me to get my 132 inch span RES model
ready to fly after I get to the field. The model fits in my van
ready to fly except that the outer wing panels have to be plugged in
and taped on. The model was designed with a 3 piece wing with a 48
inch center wing that will fit in my van when bolted to the fuselage.
If someone has a winch set up, it takes me longer that that to get
from my van to the winch. If Brian Smith is there, he often has my
model assembled by the time I get out of the van. :)

 Chuck

Chuck, add the price of the van required to haul the plane, add the price of
the winch or at least a histart and the time to lay it out or set it up plus
retrieve it and put it away.

When I first went to electrics in an all-gas club, one of the things I loved
about it was the rest of the guys had to sit there after flights with squirt
bottles of soap and baby diapers or paper towels, cleaning all the goo off
their planes before they could even put them in the trunk. Me, I'd turn off the
TX and RX, pop the wing off, toss them in the trunk of my compact car and head
out the gate, whistling. The DLG guys have the same freedom plus more
possible (smaller) sites to fly from.

DGMW: I like the big planes. I am working on one myself. But I also have a
cheap Boomer flying wing DLG that cost me under a hundred all-up, and it can go
anywhere, anytime.

[RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #10437 - Cleveland Condor

2007-12-03 Thread BOBCANMAN
Mike,

I flew towline FF gliders in the 40's and 50's. I flew Thermic 72's and a
Thermic 100. One day I saw a Cleveland Condor and a new large glider called
the Imperial.

The Cleveland Condor plans have the following information:
Condor Soarer E-19
72 in Class D Glider
294 sq. in. area
Copyright 1947

The Cleveland Condor looks to me like it was inspired by the German Condors
designed by Edgar Dittmar, 1932-1938. The book Sailplanes 1920-1945 by
Martin Simons said that Dittmar tried to incorporate the best features of the
Wien and Fafnir sailplanes. The Cleveland Condor has the rudder LE going
straight up, unlike the German Condors that have the rudder LE angled back.
The
Cleveland Condor has a fixed wheel while the German Condor HD-1, Condor 2A,
and Condor 3 all have landing skids.

The model has a highwing with gull wing dihedral. The gull wing break is at
the mid span, 18 in. The wing has a 5 in. chord for the first 18 in, and
then it tapers. The wing has 5 spars in addition to the LE and TE.

The fuselage is built one half at a time. The formers have 12 stringers on
each side. The fuse is 29.5 in. long including the rudder.

I can remember an advertisement in one of the model magazines years ago that
said all of the Cleveland plans were available. You could try a Google
search for them. My set of plans has a note under the title block that says
something like "infringements, Copying, Tracing Or Duplicating All Or Parts Or
---"

Most of the gull wing free flight models that I have built or seen did not
have enough spiral stability as a FF model. A turn tends to tighten up into a
spiral dive. The present lightweight RC systems can solve that problem.

Bob Harold

Chuck, add the price of the van required to haul the plane, add the price of
the winch or at least a histart and the time to lay it out or set it up plus
retrieve it and put it away.

When I first went to electrics in an all-gas club, one of the things I loved
about it was the rest of the guys had to sit there after flights with squirt
bottles of soap and baby diapers or paper towels, cleaning all the goo off
their planes before they could even put them in the trunk. Me, I'd turn off the
TX
and RX, pop the wing off, toss them in the trunk of my compact car and head
out the gate, whistling. The DLG guys have the same freedom plus more
possible (smaller) sites to fly from.

DGMW: I like the big planes. I am working on one myself. But I also have a
cheap Boomer flying wing DLG that cost me under a hundred all-up, and it can go
anywhere, anytime.

the field, put my card on the board and am flying 180 seconds later.

Admitedly, sometimes there is very little low level lift, but other than that,

Beat that!

Anyone out there know of some trophies that work well for Thermal
Duration flying? I have all the usual stuff, but the club up here in
Seattle is looking for something a little different than the usual cup
or slab of wood. If you have any ideas or contacts, please let me know.

Thanks in Advance

Re: [RCSE] DLGs = Bang ,etc = cost per hour.

2007-12-03 Thread Lincoln Ross

10 or 15 years ago, had an Oly 2 foisted off on me (I didn't actually bid, it
was a joke) for $25. I estimate 100 hours or more. Negelecting wear and tear on
very cheap radio, new batteries, etc. that's 10 cents per hour.

BTW, I think 100" is a neglected blend of practical, relatively inexpensive
size, visibility, and performance.

DLG's are expensive because we feel we need that last little bit of performance. As
Americans, I think we tend to feel we need all the bells and whistles. (My apologies to
those of you from other countries.) If I am at the store, I can't seem to find the
shampoo I prefer which is labeled, simply, "normal". (I don't like smelling
like a scented candle factory.) I am reasonably sure that one could get reasonable
performance out of a polyhedral DLG bagged with Kraft paper (of a suitable weight) over
foam, a mostly wooden fuselage, and balsa tail surfaces. It would still need a bit of
carbon, of course. Maybe I'll make one sometime. Particularly if I become independently
wealthy so I have time. :-p But seriously, I think for a professional guy, the cost of a
DLG is no big deal. At least when he's between layoffs.

My hobby choices are very different depending on whether time or money is the
scarce resource.

I predict that if we got rid of all TV's, we'd see a resurgence of scratch building.
Ditto if no one was allowed to "work" more than 40 hours. (I am not suggesting
the latter.)

I got the glass eagles for $8 and the ceramic ones for $9 at Wal-Mart. Made
some walnut blocks and mounted the ceramic eagles with silicone. Mounted the
glass ones to the plaques.
I asked for donations of old plaques from people who had boxes of them. Took
off the faces or just covered them up with new info printed on wood veneer or
aluminum sheet.
You can also print color pictures and mount them to the old plaques.
