I agree. Nice story. My parents both have been gone for years, but oh what I would give to sit and chat with them once again. Love them, spend some time with them if possible, while you have them. [RCSE] My Dad part 2......
WOW.. I cant believe all the wonderful responses I have received to my last post... Thank you all... :-) I left out the best part... Last week I was working on the plane and my dad was watching a story about the Bataan death march.. It was very graphic and it was just before dinner, so I asked him why he was watching it Well Craig he says... I was almost in that march I'm like what I knew my dad Flew a B-24.. In fact he was one of the few Pilots who flew on the Ploesti Romainia oil fields and lived ... But the Army? My dad never really talks about the war.. I asked him why once and he said War is hell Craig.. Why would I want to talk about hell Good point I guess... Turns out my dad and his twin brother ran away and joined the California National Guard when they were only 15 years old in 1938.. They learned to drive trucks and did odd jobs until one day the commander told then they were shipping out... My Dad said Hey were only 15, we don't want to go So they gave them their discharge papers and the rest of the division was shipped out to the Philippines were they were later captured and became part of the solder's in the Bataan Death March... One lucky dude As much as my Parents can be pains sometimes... I'm sure they think the same of me too :-) Ha Ha ...I can only say Love them and spend time with them while they are around You never know what you might learn about them and or yourself :-) And to all you parents out their.. Share your life stories with your children.. I;m sure they will cherish and appreciate your life history.. Craig
[RCSE] Many Thanks to CASL
I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the great folks at CASL, that made this last weekend so enjoyable. Even though numbers were down, this was a really fun event that was well run, and turned out to have great weather.Chico kept the contest going, and all the hard work Rick did on the winches proved to be the right move. I had Gordy time for me, and was very impressed with his calling and timing abilities, he really can do more than slam a keyboard. There was some international flavor with the addition of Andreas flying with Mike Smith, and as far as I could see everyone enjoyed a super weekend of flying and catching up with friends. It was good seeing all of you, I will be back next year. Thanks Larry **Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. [RCSE] I've Built 18 planes so far this year
Guys: I have put together 18 planes so far this year, and I'm still behind. No, I have not changed professions. Here's the deal. A buddy gave me a 2008 One Paper Airplane Per Day Calendar for a late Christmas present, and I'm falling behind. So far I have done an F4F and an SR-71 and a Wildcat and an FA-18, and a Kite Plane, and a Stunt Plane and Gordy-knows all what. I am losing track! The kitchen table is getting cluttered. The dogs suspect I am nuts. I am up to my ears in paper airplanes, and already I'm a month behind. Does Muncie accept donations of unbuilt paper airplanes? Tom H. [RCSE] Attention LSF Members and Aspirants
For the month of March, there will be an additional delay in processing LSF vouchers. I'll be in Arizona and it takes a while for my postal mail to catch up with us. I'll do my best to turn them around as soon as I can. Once we're settled in, around Feb 25th, I'll be back online. I will be returning in time to populate the LSF booth at Toledo with the rest of the handsome LSF officers. [RCSE] CASL SWC photos online
I took 266 photos while at the CASL SWC. They are accessible via this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/creyes123/sets/72157603938499957/ This is all of them - the good, the bad and the ugly. I've barely had a chance to look at them myself. I also have very high resolution versions available - let me know privately via email if you are interested in getting access to those. Enjoy. [RCSE] And Now a Word About the Icon2
I had a chance to watch one fly this weekend at the SWC, Phil Renaud had his there and flew it. Also had a chance to stand with DP, and Skip while they flew it around and tested its handling, and chatted up its characteristics in comparison to its little cousin the Supra. May as well give up on anyone arguing that it isn't like a Supra, or an evolution of the Supra. whether it is or not, its pod and boom and has Drela influence. Its relationship to the Icon is non-existent...other than its also a Maple Leaf produced sailplane. Having gotten all that out of the way, it does have some totally new innovations of its own. The fuse (pod) is unique, in that it has an underbelly access for loading square ballast slugs. big ones. The fuse is almost handlaunch petite, the tail boom is surprisingly small diameter, far smaller than an AVA or Supra. Its pretty stiff though, has to be for that 150 wing. The pod profile is also square cornered, and the cone is a firm fit. Yes its 2.4 friendly and there is enough room for a Spectram systemthat is what was in the model I saw. The pushrods for the elevator and rudder are run along the outside of the boom, definitely unlikely that inny's would be possible. Seeing it isn't a problem, the sky was very blue when those guys were flying it, and DP took it wayyy out, so similar to the Supra, you can see it just fine. It IS nimble in the air and slowed down okay for the catch. Also like the Supra, if ugly can be beautiful the Icon2 is...as pretty as any pod and boom ship. For its incredible span, it is very light...I believe I heard about 78ozs for the model they were flying. Divide that into the span and you end up having apologize for how lite it is to your friends! :-) Fit and finish looked up to Euro standards. I'm looking forward to flying against them this season! [RCSE] Lighter Winch Line
I tried lighter winch line on my winch last Saturday. When we had a line brake there was so much backlash that the line tried to destroy my winch brake. There isn't anyway I would use light winch line during a two day contest. Pilots need to adjust to winch line strength that is currently used in contests. Re: [RCSE] Lighter Winch Line
What was the line you used, what was the drum sizing and the motor condition, age and tuning set up. Just curious and would like to compare it to my set up. [RCSE] Thanks CASL
If you weren't there, you missed a great contest. It was well run, and the winch and line changes they made really made the difference. Darwin told me unofficially there were only 3 line breaks all weekend. The winches were quite zippy, but not ludicrously powerful. If they hadn't told us they had resisted them down slightly, we never would have known. Things went so smoothly, we even got to fly an extra round on Sat. Nice job CASL, and thanks I do hope other clubs follow suit on the winch power thing... On Saturday, the air was wonderfully buoyant. I'll bet almost everyone made their times - unless you did something really stupid... (Sorry JE) ;-) . Sunday, severe clear, thermals were definitely stronger, but there were a few holes out there, costing a few their times. Congrats to all the winners. Jason was on fire, nailing the luck dot on his last shot to cement the win. Andreas exhibited the landing style that has obviously been honed in a non-skeg competition format (CalTech actually sent an agent to check on unusual seismic activity) ;-). Mike S was consistently knocking down the landing points - he's so consistent. There was a way cool flyoff for 3rd between he and Cody. Side by side histart launches for a five minute max plus landing on an AMA tape. Mike shot a (I think) 2 under 96 to Cody's on time 92, taking the bronze. Nice job Mike It was fun to watch. Joe Nave in RES. He's an animal with that thing. Yeah, Gordy took Woody. (I know, I know)... Kornburg in 2M. Congrats again to all the top guys. Special congrats to CASL for doing a great job! [Fwd: Re: [RCSE] My Dad part 2......]
---BeginMessage--- Nice thing you did, Craig. I'm the old dad now and may have a little perspective to offer. My dad never had much to say, but was totally reliable and set an excellent example for my younger brother and me. We grew up as Depression kids. Money was about non-existent. My dad was making $50 a month. Rent was $12.50 a month. Thats probably proportionate now to $5,000 and $1,250. Making do was a way of life through grade school, high school and college. WW2 started when I was a college freshman and I worked my way through, in a constant state of weariness being a married man (seemed a good idea at the time) on campus in my home town of Walla Walla, WA. My first wife and I had our own tiny apartment with shared bath up 3 flights of stairs. We had a daughter (now age 65) in my senior year and thus with two total dependents having responsibilities became a way of life early in life. My 2nd wife, who had 3 small children, was stricken with multiple sclerosis the 2nd year of our marriage and life for 25 years was a combination of too good to be true and too bitter to bear. Along the way, from a little kid until right now, I had an interest in model airplanes. That interest had much to do with surviving under adversity. The hobby can really keep you going. My dad died at 87 and I'm turning 87 tomorrow and the resident old dad . Rather than a problem, I'm still the problem solver when the kids get in a jam. In spite of all the weariness and troubles, life has been good. The kids are now all grown with grown kids of their own, keep in touch and appreciate the effort involved in rearing a family. Today, I'm driving 130 miles round trip to go flying at a sod farm near Pasco, Wa. Temperature was 22 when I got up at 7, but it will warm up to maybe 40, anyway. I just finished up Smooth Genie Pro #4 and it gets maidened today. My lady friend of over 20 years will accompany me. I bribed her with a promise we would dine out for lunch at Burger King on the way over. We are walking 2-3 miles a day. Don't concede to being a problem dad, guys. Keep doing. Keep moving. Keep flying. Get exposure. Make friends. Do something for somebody. Root for Dale, Jr. Watch Judge Judy and count your blessings you are not like those she deals with. ---End Message---
[RCSE] Good guys at SWC
They say life is what happens while you are making plans. The SWC did not go as I planned! After a smokin first round in RES and Open my radio decided to go south. I resigned myself to time and watch the rest of the contest. Then comes along my old buddy Joe Nave. Since we both fly Supra and Ava on a 9303 Joe offered to let me use his transmitter. After a little reprogramming both planes were again flyable. To top it off, in the next to last round while climbing through George Joy he cut my Ava wing tip off! The plane kept flying with a little rudder trim and just missed a 20 landing on time! Then Joe offers to let me fly his Ava! And this is while he is in first place! Thanks Joe, you deserved the win. Our new TOSS junior Ben flew all rounds but the last one made it all worth while as he skied out and made a perfect approach to landing points while friends and family looked on. The CASL guys threw a great contest I'll be back next year. Mike Reagan
