[RCSE] Carbon/brass pitfall

2008-04-28 Thread CapnCrunchie
I have used the carbon/brass sleeved rod (10mm) for one season on the slope in
a 3m scale ship and discovered an unexpected trait of this combo. We all know
that a carbon rod will bend slightly then return to its original shape due to
its stiffness. But when a very ductile metal (such as brass) is used and the
combo is bent due to extreme G loads the brass bends and takes a set preventing
the carbon from returning to it's straightness. I have 2 rods to show for this.
I have searched to find thin walled stainless steel tubing but the cost is
prohibitive. I have also thought about using a Kevlar sleeve due to its
resistance in shear loads, but I don't know of any source for Kevlar tubing.
7000 series aluminum may be another possibility.

Your Carbon/brass rod may not break, but be prepared to be forever
straightening it!

2006-10-19 Thread CapnCrunchie
Good to hear that you guys got good service at Hobby Horse. My first (and only) order to them was not good. At the time I called they said all orders over $100 received free shipping. So Iasked for 4 Hitec 85mg's over the phone and placed my order. But when the order arrived it only contained 2 servos.I called and they said the ran out and the other 2 were on back order and would be sent when they arrived. But then they charged me shipping on BOTH orders because when they split the order neither one totaled over $100.     Since I was made to pay for shipping TWICE for an order that should have been free I resolved to never order from them again. There are other vendors that have the same products at same (or better) prices. My LHS or ServoCity gets my money now...     Just my 2 cents.     Blue skies, Capn Crunchie

Amazing what one comes up with practically no budget.     Too bad to hear that polishing compound doesn't work on headlight covers. Your level V want be belittled.     Some people would ust like an additional seperate program/task that is more suitable to there locale/financial/family circumstances. Get it? Nobody wants to change anything - only add on. Seems like the people that can afford a quiver full of moldies don't want the wood workers to have anything to work for.     BTW, what is the website of that Canadian LSF-type program? Re: [RCSE] how high really

When using these altitude watches be sure to read the included instructions very closely. Many of the ~$100 watches take pressure readings periodically only once every 2 mins. (or greater) and are made primarily for hikers/skiers. Suuto makes watches that can be set by user to take readings in intervals up to every 10 secs. but at the cost of battery endurance. However, by the time you get to this level of watch performance the price is approaching that of a piccalario!     But then again, I am not going be to taking my vario with me as I am launching off into Black Diamond mogul filled torture test in sub freezing temperatures, either!  ;^O)      I don't know how pressure-sensitive/mounting position critical these model altitude recorders are - but I do know that the altimeters used in skydiving are not that sensitive to location (wrist/helmet/chest) where dramatic pressure
changes are constantly occuring during the jump due to body position. Only when I roll over on to my back do I see a difference occur with a chest mount altimeter. I don't believe vario mounting position inside a sailplane is going to make any appreciable difference in the accuracy of the reading.     Blue skies, Capn Crunchie

As George said, Cheapbatteries.com . They are da Bomb!

I have become disenchanted with the batteriesamerica no-name nimh cells that have let me down several times, once after only 6 months. I now will only use nimhs that are GoldPeak(GP), KAN or CBP (cheapbattery packs). I am continuosly checking my packs and for the last 3 years have always obtained the performance as claimed from GoldPeak/KAN. I am still running cells that were 270mah rated that now sell as 350mah for the same size. Yet, they still put out the 270mah I ask for. BTW this gives me 2.5 hrs on my javelin hlg's that I fly on the slope during the winter. I have done this MANY times with juice left over when checked on the Sirius discharger at the end of the day. I run GoldPeak 2000 cells in my Stylus and seldom need to use my back up pack. If I do, it is becuase of extensive aircraft setup "ON" time for the TX.

But, then again, each to his own

[RCSE] The NOS dead horse beating.......again

>My guess is you have not read the rules because it clearly states thepilot is to provide documentation, no where does it referance a list.<

C'mon lets face it, if one goes to a contest and his plane is on "the List", he wouldn't have to provide documentation, right? BTW, where is the Legionaire 132 on 'the list'? DUUUH!

I have been digging and asking for ANY type of "documentation" so I wouldn't have to be concerned about being disqualified by the CD after driving 200+ miles to attend a NOS event with my MalCo Eagle. Thanks bunches for the info, Chuck Anderson. I see light in the tunnel.

Many of us are flying Vintage ships that have been bought at swap meets or from widows and have no source for the plans. Or the plans got wasted during construction! I am trying to find plans or a picture of the box for an Original(first edition) Windrifter 100 that shows the stab mounted on the fuse. I saw one once on eBay but didn't win the bid. Until then, I can't compete at an AMA NOS event with mine

THAT, is why I like the way Ray Hayes and Jack Womack think. I also have a set of plans for a Legionaire provided to me by Jack Hamilton that shows how to use a fiberglass boom like the one on his '76 FAI ship. But according to AMA rules - 'taint legal! I understand the original intent of the rules, but they are too restrictive and more dificult to document than a Scale ship!!

I just cut a small piece of foam with holes in it to protect the TX sticks. Sorta like the one your radio came in. And if you get the one that the Oakland raiders on it, there is even room for a cold drink or other field gear. Best selection around back to school time.

charge for shipping what the actual postage is! Great people on
