[RCSE] Sincere Apology.....

2008-08-24 Thread Craig Allen

As some of you are aware I fell from a second story balcony and broke my back a
few years ago. This left me in incredible pain that was managed by various
prescription drugs, physical therapy, and exercises..

That was until the Workman's comp insurance company cut off all my benefits and
medical coverage about a year ago.

I have been self-medicating myself with Alcohol ( Polish Vodka) ever since... I
now realize I have a big problem and will be entering rehab tomorrow..

I want to apologize to all of you who I have offended and been a complete
asshole too..And a special apology and thank you to Don Peters who's sincere
email made me realize how big a problem I have, and what a total dick I have
becomeAnd to Gordy who tried to help me.

Once again I'm
truly sorry for my behavior. But the hardest thing to face is my Dad...
I'm so so sorry Dad i feel like a  total failure and an
Idiot

Sincerely

[RCSE] removing old covering..... Update

2008-08-22 Thread Craig Allen
Turns out there's no shortcut to old fashioned elbow grease... I sanded the
rudder and stab using various pieces of wood that I glued sandpaper to and a
big flat sheet that I glued to my work bench.  They look fantastic now in
transparent white Ultracote.

Now onto the wings They pose a bit of a problem because they have
under-camber.  But I plan on gluing sandpaper to a rather larger cardboard drum
used to pour concreat footings... Then throwing my two cats and a mouse inside
to power it.. Should work hu :-))

Hope to have her converted to Electric and flying for my dad by next weekend..
Oh ya... The plane is my dads 1965 Lou Proctor Antic... Only thing that might
hold me up is all the dam rigging...

I think Kurt Z. figired it out It's silkspan and its painted with

So I guess I'm going to have to use the two 20 year old cuties as Brian Chan

Re: [RCSE] JR blues

So what you are saying is Apple should make a radio :-)

D.O. Darnell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Can't argue with the weight or power
consumption of a STY. Those
early NSC processors and EPROMS are pretty power hungry. I'm glad
you like your JR. However, The point I was trying to make, albeit
poorly, was that reverting to a 20-year old problem (channel to
channel mixing only ) is really kind of silly (unless you're talking
about 14 channels, maybe). When you think about, all sets these days,
whether JR, AIR, FUT HiT, etc are programmed by simply selecting a
value on a screen and pushing a button or rotating a pot. Thats OK
but could be much better.

My point is that we need the simplicity using abstractions having
functional viewpoints, plus decent documentation/tutorials that
average (non programmers) can understand and implement, PLUS the
ability to adjust the desktop as it were to suit and serve the TX's
user. At the same time, we need the upgradability like that of the
PC so we can load SD chips, etc with whatever programming paradigm we
wish to use, and understandable software to generate and update the
same. An IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for the R/C TX, as
it were. Some think this impossible or improbable, but I heard the
same nay-saying when, a few years ago, I suggested on this forum
that some day we wouldn't need frequency pins and that everyone could
fly at once.

Model setup storage is the first step in this direction. Airtronics
was among the first to implement this (along with Multiplex). Perhaps
the next step is, as my friend Don suggested, a good simulator program
(MAC/PC) that will let you see (emulate reality) what you new setup is
capable of in a virtual glider, prior to dumping it into the TX and
using it for real. CRRSIM is an open-source simulator that features
gliders. Check it out. *** It may, in a future iteration, qualify
for the job of the emulator.

The long-in-the-tooth Stylus was not the first programmable TX, nor
was the even longer-toothed Vision (I still own two of them as well)
but they were the first really useable and soaring-friendly
programmables. Those which followed stood, as they say, on tall
shoulders. C Systems Labs was responsible for their programming and
I mentioned the STY as it uses this firms firmware. I never meant to
imply that Stys are superior to JRs or anything of the kind, although
several folks have apparently taken it that way. Guys like those at C
Systems can program any brand it they chose to. JR seems to get
picked on more than other brands, and even they could possibly use
some help, once in a while.

And for those of you who had Stylus problems, did you send them in for
maintenance / service every three years of so? Uhuh!

I think everyone has made good points... I like the idea of extra points for

I'm just bored with TD I guess... Anyone want a Sharon?

PS... This last weekend we should of had one of the best 2 day Contest in
NorCal. The Gamblers Gala, hosted by the Sierra Silent Soarers and CD'd by none

comes back next year... :-)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Craig,

What is with messing around with winch time All minimizing winch
time does is make planes go up faster, and have them built like
composite bullets.

Why not do something simple, like take the weight of the plane, mulitply
it by seconds and get a max time you have to fly??

We once talked about this , way back, when people used to fly scale, or
really stand off scale in the LSF tounaments and SSOAR NAT (that dates
me!) Pilots often chose unique projects that could not compete with the
slicker ships. A Schul Glider had a L/D of 15: or so. If you took
the L/D and multiply it by say 10 seconds, that meant that your max time
had to be 150 seconds (2.5 minutes), which was reasonable for draggy,
early gliders. If you had a Kestral, with an L/D of 36:1, that meant
360 seconds, or 6 minutes. That was reasonable for a slick glider.
That kept scale gliders of all vintages competitive.

So...let me ask this:

What happens if the launch is a discus launch of a 100 glider NO
TOW TIME

Think about it. If you know you can hand launch into a thermal, why
loose 4-5 seconds every time Hello JW!!

Personally, any time you try to do this stuff, it always ends up with a
conclusion no one wants to fly!

Having read the other replies, I think the solution would be to have a device
that timed the length of time the winch motor was on for the launch and
deduct that from the score. That would allow a woody to tap up to the top and
 take
their time doing so without incurring the time on tow penalty. The penalty
would then be for time using power on tow.

choose to play or not just like they do in the regular TD Classes. My guess is
the guys that are good enough to be competitive still with their floaters in

Without a great Caller - Timer... Your going to suck... plane and simple :-)

That's why I'm happy to announce Fred Weaver.. The Weav... Has promised me that
he will time for me at this years Visalia contestThat is if he is not

Fred Weaver is the Man

Without him doing most of my calling and timing I probably would of finished in
the middle of the pack... I think I drove him a little Crazy though :-)))

Things Fred told me this weekend...

You fly funny No your other left Dam I've never seen someone fly through
so many thermals Circle dam it You piece of.. :-)

Fred had bad luck in the landing triangle, The first part of the triangle was
minus 10 points and poor Fred hit it 4 times Fred's one of those natural
born fliers... He hadn't flown since Thanksgiving and he shows up and comes in
9th.. And if he hadn't had the minus 40 landing points he would of been 4th...
Not to shabby Fred...:-)

And thanks once again :-)

Now if he would only sell those silly full size airplanes and concentrate on
soaring... :-) hehe

Re: [RCSE] Kornberg Leads!! But I won RES :-) And I'm pissed....

2008-06-22 Thread Craig Allen
Holly Cow I won RES for the second time in three years.

Came down to my last 9min flight... I didn't get a landing all weekend.. Hell,
I didn't even come within 3 feet of the spot,, And what a small spot it was...
I thought I needed a 100 pointer and my time to win... So when I got an 80
landing and my time I was thinking I got 2nd place...

But Gordy had it right I was Rooted all weekend...

First a big apology to Fred Weaver... I had a feeling this weekend was going to
shit when Fred was yelled at for returning his 2.4 transmitter without a pin
when they never gave him one..

My weekend was so much fun :-(

First the Smoking Police... Turns out after 8 years that now their is a SVSS
no smoking on green grass policy because of a perceived fire danger.. No
problem barbecuing with a open flame or cutting dry grass or flying electrics
that as we all know like to catch on fire when they crash... No.. Just make a
public example out of me F U...

Then I was yelled at over and over... First it was were I was standing while
flying,,, Were I was flying... And Oh ya.. U can't fly over your head at 30
seconds... Been doing it for 40 years... Now its against the rules...

SVSS is a perfect example of when you give someone a little power they turn
into Nazi's What ever happened to the SVSS rule # 1 2 and 3.. Having Fun?

Disclaimer.. Despite being yelled at all weekend I still had a good time being
with friends and the contest was run smoothly... A big shout out to Dudley
Dufort for all his work keeping time.. I know it must of been hot as hell in
that trailer.

Ok.. I'm done

Craig.. PS.. The Falcon barely made it homeI'll be replacing the U joints
tomorrow :-)

Thanks very much to everyone that has made this fundraising campaign as
successful as it has been. We are about 1 week away from departure now and
getting very excited! We are still working towards the final $3000 need to
balance our budget. Your generous sales and contributions have raised about
$2000 in the last 2 weeks. This is phenomenal… We recently were made aware
of an accounting problem from the AMA and it added about $800 to our
fundraising needs. We are putting a final push on to close the budget
deficit.

We will continue to take raffle sales through our return on the 8th of July.
The following Saturday the 12th of July we will draw the winners. We will
be closing all merchandise sales on Friday 6/20/2008. We still have a large
stock of tee shirts short/long sleeve, pockets and not. We wanted to offer
free shipping on any in-stock order, but it was too hard to manage the
inventory, SO we are offering FREE shipping on all new orders placed now
through next Friday. We will ship all in-stock orders before we leave. Any
order with items not in stock will be ordered from the printer but will need
to wait for our return to be fulfilled.

Now is the time to help our budget, help us clear out some inventory and get
a great deal.

Don’t forget the great raffle. It is actually a better source of income for
the team as every dollar goes directly to the team, With the merchandise
sales we make about $7-$10 on each item on average and it is a lot more
work.

The team is well prepared to compete hard for the World Championship. Your
support had made it possible for us to get this far. Please look at our
DONOR page and see all of the great companies and individuals that have made
this campaign possible.

[RCSE] WAG contest.. The real Story :-)

2008-06-14 Thread Craig Allen
Gordy only told part of the Story

I talked Gordy into flying in the WAG contest the Friday before the IHLGF... I
brought 3 planes with me, so I figured what's the worst that could happen...He
could destroy one of my backups... No big deal :-) Well on the way to the
field my brakes failed and I had to take a turn really fast... Like a 40mph U
turn :-) Well that shifted everything in the van and broke my #2 planes boom...
So now I'm down to 2 planes. Still no big deal if Gordy destroys one.. Right...
So I show up at the field and Gordy is itching to fly..

I pull out the plane check that everything works and give it a toss.. Straight
up.. No control.. Straight down.. Well kind of... Through the telephone lines
and into Bruce Davidson's rental car... Someone was on my frequency!!! :-(((

So now I'm down to ONE plane If U have ever flown in the IHLGF its almost
impossible to go all weekend with just one plane... Shit happens :- hehe

So now I'm like... Crap.. But oh well who cares? Not me :-)

I gave Gordy my word and that's more important to me... So I hand Gordy my ONLY
plane and let him go at it... For not being A Hand-launch Guy he had a
decent launch.. He flies the crap out of it.. Like he's been flying it for
years... He even new how to handle a Futaba 9C transmitter...H???

In the back of my mind I'm figuring something is going to happen..

Well it did..

Gordy using a plane he had only 20-30 min of flying time on kicked some serious
ass... He was 5th going into the fly-offs...The only reason he didn't do well
in the fly-offs was the weather conditions really deteriorated, the sun was
almost down, and lift was non-existent.. It became a who can launch the highest
and cover contest...

How did I do with the very same plane? Not so good... All these years I thought
I lived in the State of California.. But now I realize I live in the State of
Denial!!!

My flying sucks :-))

I know some of you who have never meet Gordy probably think he really lives is
in his mothers basement or a Mental Institution making up stories on the
Internet about flying all over the world... Well as much as I hate to say
it... Gordy really is a good stick and a good ambassador for our hobby

Craig.. Gun to my head :-)

Re: [RCSE] IHLGF Great Story and David some body..Hmmm Maybe Hobby

2008-06-09 Thread Craig Allen
David,

Thanks for the kind words :-) I truly enjoy helping out and feel honored to
have spent the weekend with such wonderful people :-)

Its 1;30 am and just made it home after leaving Poway at 7pm.. Great time for
driving 550 miles in 6.5 hours with two stops :-)))

Saturday I'm siting in the shade and this this very friendly man shows up... He
has a smile and personality the just makes you warm up to him right away.. He
looks kind of familiar so I introduce myself and he says he's David... Everyone
seems to know him... So its like Hm whats his last name

So now its time for me to fly and I need a timer.. So I ask David if he will
time for me.. He says Sure I'd be happy to time for you... On the way out to
the field I ask him if he is good at reading air.. He says Ya I'm OK i guess
 So I say cool

He does a great job giving me lots of advise... Sunday he shows up again and I
notice he knows Kevey.. As in Kevey bother me of NZ fame :- So I ask Kevey
after Davis left... Why does it seem like I know David Kevey says... U
mean David Hobby two time f3j champ!!! I about Craped my pants :-)))

U tell me were else in the world a low life middle of the pack pilot like
myself is going to insult the current F3J champ and he was still nice enough to
time for me... Not once but twice :-

Thank U David :-)

Only in Poway Baby :-) More later... Ya About U NZ guys Brazilian guys and
Gordy... Gordy only told half the story :-

David Klein [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Man what a cool weekend. I am more than
hooked. Getting together with all of the best pilots really does something too
you. I enjoyed hand launch before, but now I am really hooked. I stared
Friday afternoon with a mediocre launch and got a few tips. I would say I am
now above average. Seeing the really great guys have a go at it, and getting a
few tips from Paul Anderson really made the difference. I would say that my
launch is now an asset.

The camaraderie that exists from a large event that many travel too just can't
be overstated. The only other time I have felt this level of it was at the F3b
world championships. When guys are away from home, and not yet worried about
the drive back, something special happens. You just cant explain it,
everything just becomes a little more fun. The food tastes better, the beer is
a little colder, and the jokes a little funnier. Well at least until you hear
Craig Allen laugh :) But by the end of the weekend, Craig Allen's laugh
becomes its own joke, it is contagious. BTW, this guy goes way out of his way
o help out all of the international pilots, bringing chairs, chilli bins (Kiwi
for ice chest) and pop up shades. This guy shows the generosity RC pilots are
known for, thanks Craig.

Also I need to really thank the Torrey Pines Gulls for the 15th IHLGF. I think
Ron Schark invented this sport or something. Ron has been the event chair and
coordinator for 15 straight years. Kudos. So the event has now been past down
to the new gaurd of TPG officers, and I look forward to eveolution and
continued excellence. I would like to point out that the impound was a thing
of beauty. Places like Visalia and Phoenix have larger contest, but they are
not man on man. It takes alot more organization, and manpower to run a large
man on man contest and keep it running. The impound was flawless, a really top
notch job. They even had these bad AS$ color printed logo labels for the
transmitted identification. I hope someone can post a picture. So thank you
TPG volunteers, great work.

The contest conditions were really awesome, lots of lift ensuring someone would
max the round, but lots of wind, sink, funny air making it challenging too. It
allowed for plenty of separation and challenge, always fun and rewarding.

Dude, I know the Polecat will be attended by more pilots this year, but man
this weekend was nuts. On Sunday you could meet DLG teams from Brazil and New
Zealand (life of the party x 10), Soaring Legend from Canada Arend Borst (great
flying man), 2 x F3J WC Australian David Hobby, and another soaring legend from
the F3b and F3F scene Norwegian Espen Torp. Dude, the rest of the crazy
awesome pilots can be scene on the pilots list, but damn this was like being at
the F3b WC in Switzerland. In fact, after the comp, some new DLG guys came up
to Oleg and asked if they could have a picture with him. Next time, I think I
will get everyone to sign my plane. It was cool. This thing was truly
international. Again, I keep relating it to the F3b WC in Switzerland last
year, but it must be because of Kev, Craig, and the other NZ boys, these guys
make life more fun. Mike Seid was making comments about moving to NZ beacause
poeple from NZ are always having more fun than anyone
 else.

I could go on for a long time, but I would like to stress how awesome this kind
of event is for everyonw

RE: [RCSE] A123s

2008-05-30 Thread Craig Allen
I use 123 cells and they are great for sport flying. You can charge them up at
up to 40 amps.. YES 40 amps with a zip wire... I use 2 deep cycle 12v battery's
in series with 8ft of lamp cord to charge 6cell packs in 10 - 12 min. They
actually get better over time and seem to like being abused..

However.. They have a serious voltage drop under constant load so they don't
work well with my electric tow planes were full power is required for up to 2
min.

I am very aware of the A123 cells. I have chargers that will charge them. But
that does not prevent me from learning from others.

If someone chose a particular technology which is different from what I would
choose, I like to understand why. This is how I learn new things.

Why is a very powerful tool and the source of all knowledge.

[RCSE] A123 Zip Charging

2008-05-30 Thread Craig Allen
Here is a link to Zip Charging on RC Groups...

Dan Baldwin of Baldwin controls makes a board to cut off voltage so you don't
over charge your packs... Great thing is... No charger needed only a length of
lamp cord to control the amps.. Longer cord for wimps or a short cord for us
with Kahonas :-) hehe... And if you want to be safe one of Dans boards that you
can build for $10.00 or you can just monitor the voltage with a volt meter.

[RCSE] 2008 IHLGF

2008-05-30 Thread Craig Allen
I cant believe Gordy is coming to the 2008 IHLGF

Those of you not in the know... The IHLGF is the best man on man contest their
is...

No I take that back... It's the best contest there is! Beats Viselia
not by the partying But by the camaraderie...

I drive over 1200 miles, spend hundreds of dollars of my own money to provide
shade, chairs, and refreshments for the international pilots and those who come
from out of town... Why?

Lets see.. Since I broke my back my launch sucks,,, Not that it was great to
begin with... But I have no chance of ever being in the top 10 or even the top
40 for that matter But because I have a hell of a time...

One of the best things about the IHLGF is the traditions around food... Gordy U
would love this.. Thursday is Rib night, Friday is Hamburger and if U know how
to order.. All U can eat ribs night, Saturday is all U can eat Pizza... and
Sunday we go to an all U can eat Sushi place that is really incredible... Throw
in some Cold Stone Ice Cream And you have a hell of a time :-)

I've lost 20 pounds just so I can gain them all back at Poway :-)

I have meet the most amazing people from all over the world. France, England,
New Zealand, Brazil, Hawaii, Poland, East Coast planet... You are from another
planet aren't you?

Were else can you be having a conversation with someone and you ask them what
they do and they say I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you... And
that's like almost everyone :-) LOL

So if your not doing anything next weekend and want to see man on man and
Soaring competition at its best... Come on down to Poway...

I'll have over 40 ft of shade, 20 chairs, and anything and everything you could
imagine to drink. And a brand new deep cycle battery to charge from :-)

Craig
PS... Bruce U bringing the red vines? Or am I going to have to kill U?? LoL

RE: [RCSE] A123s

2008-05-30 Thread Craig Allen
Hi Dave,

I have three Electric tow planes...

The first one my brother Scott Allen uses.. Its a Hanger 9 Super Cub that they
don;t make anymore... Axi 4330 9s3p thunder-power packs turning a 20/6/8 prop.
weighing in at around 18 pounds... But I'm going to convert it to a Axi 4345/18
with 12s 3p turning a 24/10...

My other tow plane is a highly modified Stinger from Tower Hobbies... I
lengthened the nose by 4' to balance it, cut the rudder down by 6' and made a
sub fin. I was worried the rudder would get broken off by the tow line. It has
a 4345 Axi using 12s2p A123 cells. But I'm going to convert it to regular
lithium cells from www.hobbycity.com 6600ma pack for $250 but I have to make
it myself...:-)

But my favorite tow plane is the one I'm working on right now... 110 Rascal
I'll use the 4345 for now but would like to use two of them on one shaft to
give me 8 to 10 hp :-) Then I can tow up just about anything But I'm still
on Workman's comp from breaking my back so my budget is limited

Unfortunately mostly of our club members ( SVSS) Sacramento Ca. Are all talk
and no action... The major draw back as I see it is battery cost... I'd be
willing to give the Stinger to someone if they would come up with 2 sets of
batteries to fly it

Craig
PS... If Brian Chan would sell me his 1/3 scale Space Walker.. Now that would
make a killer electric tow plane :-)

Re: [RCSE] Painting moulded fiberglass fuse

2008-05-02 Thread Craig Allen
Hi Richard,

The exact reason this happening is because of silicone in the release agent. So
keep anything with silicone away from what you are painting... This is
especially true of WD40. One small spray of WD40 in the room and it will find
your plane... If the problem persist they have special silicone removers at
automotive paint stores.

Re: [RCSE] what tape for Ava tips so they don't peel?

2008-04-25 Thread Craig Allen
What you do is put one layer of tape on each panel before you put them together
. Be careful to not tape the spoiler down :-) That way when you put the wing
tips on you are taping to the existing tape and it doesn't pull the covering
off...

Been doing it like this for 3 years with no problems...

Craig

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Have been flying the Ava some more. What kind of tape do people use on the tips
so that the edge of the covering doesn't peel up? I've been having that
problem. Or perhaps I should run a bit of thin CA to seal the edges??

BTW, I saw that video of the guy launching his Ava like a DLG. It's really more
like a hammer throw, as the idea is to use a loop of line from your hand to the
tow hook and just hold the tip in place. Anyway, I tried it and it works fine,
but it didn't somehow feel right so I didn't put any power in it. Got maybe 30
or 40 feet anyway. Suspect over 100 is possible if you pull out the stops. No
wobbles or anything. Even tho my cg is quite conservative, however, it doesn't
pull up much.

[RCSE] Looking for Carbon plate?

2008-03-24 Thread Craig Allen
I have started work on my Dad's 1/3 scale Aronca C-3 and need to replace all
the control horns. They are made out what looks like phenolic and it has
deteriorated over the 30 odd years...

So I'm looking for some pre-made Carbon sheet 1/8 or 3/16 thick 2 to 3 inches
wide and maybe 1 ft long to cut new control horns and bell-cranks out of. So
if you know of a supplier I would greatly appreciate it :-)

This might be interesting to you... This is a 1/3 scale 35 pound airplane... I
just got off the phone with George Steiner and he told me the old Kraft 4 wire
servos that are in the plane are rated at 18oz of torque... 18oz of torque for
a 1/3 scale plane and it flew just fine back in the day.. How amazing is
that So if i put 40oz standard servos in it I'm improving it by a factor
of over 2 .. :-) LOL :-)

[RCSE] Guess What I Found Hiding in a Corner on RC Groups...2.4 Carbon F..

Gordy...

You are reminding me of the time I was at Lucas film years ago and they were
trying to use one of the first Non - linear film editing systems... I was shown
a BIG room were the walls were covered from floor to ceiling with computer
print outs...

I said whats this? Well he says... If you follow All of these directions

Do you really that anyone is going to drop their brand to switch to something

Guys that have JR, Futa or Airtronics are comfortable with their systems,
know its programming and their planes are set to the end points travels,
centers etc for their systems.

Futa has yet to prove that their systems work any better than anyone else's
2.4, in fact their actions prove just the opposite. They have been late into
the 2.4 market, entered with toy plane versions and have done (their actions
not your words) just the opposite. What single official Futa thing have you
seen published toward rc competition sailplanes?

Radios are expensive, specially the 2.4 stuff. No one is changing because
Futa has longer antenna leads.

So enjoy your brand, but lighten up a bit on promoting something that has only
one documented use in rc carbon sailplanes.

That has been my point about 2.4 systems in general, a lot of heat has been
created on RCGroups but very little light has come from it all the noise.

Changed the oil in the old 63 convertible, drove to the local park were gliders
all started for me back some 38 years ago ( Right Wev ?) and flew The Worlds
Oldest Sharon for the first time in 2 years... Checked out whether it really
did launch better off a high-start with no camber... Yep it does :-)

Caught a few thermals over the nature area with some big turkey vultures and
called it a day... It might be nice elsewhere, but nothing beats California

Re: [RCSE] As the Current Reigning World Champion Woody Pilot... PT 1 1/2 SWC 2.4

2008-02-19 Thread Craig Greening
Just wanted to clarify Gordy's comments about the use of multiple receivers
within the Spektrum system. It's a function of the shorter wavelength (higher
frequency). With a single receiver there is the potential for a secondary
signal, reflected from structure/object within the model, to arrive 180 degrees
out of phase and cancel the 'good' signal. Having multiple receivers makes this
impossible and is one of the advantages of the Spektrum system. This situation
is not unique to Spektrum, but all 2.4ghz systems.

The amount of separation required is only a few inches, but depending on the
receiver location can be as far as 36 distant.

Craig.

Subject: [RCSE] As the Current Reigning World Champion Woody Pilot... PT 1
1/2 SWC 2.4

And finally...well not finally cuz its still early in this game...2.4 news.
I flew 2.4 in my Marauder and a handful of guys flew various brands in their
2.4 friendly RES and Open ships. It does work if you apply those little gray
cells when installing.

I had a really good chat with Peter Goldsmith (Horizon Hobby) during a lull
in the action and I threw a couple of what-if's at him concerning concern for
2.4 limitations...and well, he was ready for them!

Yep, its about 40 Spectrum TX's that can be on at once, and it while it would
be possible for a situation to arise in some fictional situation where someone
would be inconvenienced...all indications in actual contest conditions so
faras in real world versus hypotheticalall indications are that its a
case of don't worry...be REAL happy!

This was my first opportunity to experience the out right feeling of freedom
of having a 2.4 system at a contest. Each time they'd call me up to fly my
woody, hand me the 16 clip I had registered for my other classes, I'd just
smile, knowing that it no longer applied...none of 'it'. And flying that woody
that took the MMGliderTech boys a lot of hours of meticulous building to
create...knowing that it was safe from at least one threat of undeserved
destruction. Each timeit sunk in a little deeper, that feeling of first
freedom, then real realization of what it meant to not even consider the
possibilities, responsibilities and liabilities of having to have a 'channel'.
It really made me understand how worth it is would be to do the 'work' of
getting those RX's installed correctly.

My chat with Peter G also enlightened me about why they decided on the two
RX system...its pretty logical actually. The 2.4 signal is no more or less
affected by the carbon fuses we use in all of our molded ships today than 72mhz
is. But we figured out how to overcome the carbon problem...by extending the
antenna and allowing it to dangle free of RF signal shading caused by wings and
fuses.

Spectrum's dual RX's provide actual triangulation system for the signals that
pass back and forth, from TX to RXs', a wider 'backstop' of sorts for the TX
signal to be caught with...two hands instead of one to get a good grip on the
information your thumb is trying to get to the servos. A bit of over kill for
most RC applications but just enough for RC sailplanes...that fly wa off,
in sometimes foggy weather, sometimes blocked or deflected by tree tops,
antenna and power towers..and of course timer's bellies :-).

This kind of thinking comes from a company with two top RC sailplane guys in
positions to offer up the 'what-ifs' to designers and engineers at the
manufacturer levels.

Okay does that mean none of the other systems won't or don't work? Nope, but
it does give you all some insight I know I didn't have until I had a chance to
ask about...after I had some personal experience with 2.4.

Currently I don't have non carbon fuselages for my World's Heaviest Carbon
Supra Lite, or my Perfect, or Pike Giant, or even my Super AVA...but I have
some ideas to try in order to use 2.4 in those airframes successfully. I'll
keep you guys posted on my experiments :-).

[RCSE] My Dad part 2......

2008-02-18 Thread Craig Allen
WOW.. I cant believe all the wonderful responses I have received to my last
post...

Thank you all... :-)

I left out the best part... Last week I was working on the plane and my dad was
watching a story about the Bataan death march.. It was very graphic and it was
just before dinner, so I asked him why he was watching it

Well Craig he says... I was almost in that march I'm like what I knew my
dad Flew a B-24.. In fact he was one of the few Pilots who flew on the Ploesti
Romainia oil fields and lived ... But the Army? My dad never really talks
about the war.. I asked him why once and he said War is hell Craig.. Why
would I want to talk about hell Good point I guess...

Turns out my dad and his twin brother ran away and joined the California
National Guard when they were only 15 years old in 1938.. They learned to drive
trucks and did odd jobs until one day the commander told then they were
shipping out... My Dad said Hey were only 15, we don't want to go So they
gave them their discharge papers and the rest of the division was shipped out
to the Philippines were they were later captured and became part of the
solder's in the Bataan Death March... One lucky dude

As much as my Parents can be pains sometimes... I'm sure they think the same of
me too :-) Ha Ha ...I can only say Love them and spend time with them while
they are around You never know what you might learn about them and or
yourself :-)

And to all you parents out their.. Share your life stories with your children..
I;m sure they will cherish and appreciate your life history..

[RCSE] My Dad,... U'R Dad?

2008-02-17 Thread Craig Allen
I just wanted to share this with everyone...

My Mother called me last week and told me she was worried about my Dad and his
health... He's 85, Fought in the battle of Britten at age 17 and was a B-24
pilot once America joined the war... He has trouble breathing now because he
was a 50 year smoker..Its touch and go with him... Never knowing if this is the
day.

So I took over to their house my latest Electric tow plane to put together
A Stinger 120 ARF using a 5340AXIS and A123 batteries.. Thanks Brian Chan
:-)))... He loved it... You never know with my Dad.. I was so worried he would
think it was a piece of crap.. But it has made him so happy to be a part of
helping me put it together... Its almost done and I can't wait to fly it for
him

So all of you with aging parents... All I can say is is try and make them happy
and just maybe.. You will find happiness yourself and some wonderful memories
too :-)))

[RCSE] BayRC Build night - F3J fund raiser :-)

2008-02-02 Thread Craig Allen
WOW.. Just got back from a BayRC build night... Tonight it was hosted by the
one and only Bob McGowan at his home in Fremont Ca. Only 200 miles away from
me...

I had heard so many wonderful story's about these Build Nights I had to go and
see for myself if they really built anything or it was just a code word for
Beer and Strippers :- hehe

Tonight's theme was turkey's for turkey.. You see Bobs son AJ is on the Junior
F3J teem.. So to raise some money Bob and the group fixed up some old planes
that were turkeys.. And plan on selling them to help finance their trip to
turkey for the F3J worlds...

Hell MR 2 Meter Bob McGowan even sold him 2m Image...To help pay for their
trip... Do you have any idea how many contest Bob had won with that plane
Its probably the single most winningest plane ever in RC soaring Must of
been hard for him to part with it...

I'm not sure how they plan on selling the planes they fixed tonight but if you
hear anything just remember that your not just buying a plane... Your helping
out our F3J teem :-

Driving 400 miles and only paying 20 for gas... Very Cool But watching Bob
work on planes with a few beers in him,., Priceless :-)

Re: [RCSE] Re: Airfoil flight comparison( HN-216)?

2008-02-01 Thread Craig Allen
My best flights are when I forget to turn on :-

David Webb [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Gentlemen, I would like your feedback on
something I created last
season in a bit of a whim. I have been competing at various TD tasks
in the Northwest over the last 3 years. Over this time I have
witnessed far too many launches where the pilot after the fact
admitted that he/she did not turn on the aircraft. Needless to say
most of the aircraft were lost or seriously damaged. So in search of a
solution I went to a local electronics shop and asked a young guy if
he could give me a hand designing a safety component that might help
avoid this scenario.

Basically we designed a switch with a small tilt sensor and some
latching circuitry. The result is this:

If you remember to turn on the plane the switch works as expected. The
plane powers on and off as it would normally.

If you turn OFF the plane and tilt the aircraft in the desired launch
angle ( this is set by the pilot) the plane turns ITSELF on and stays
on until the circuit is reset by disconnecting / interrupting the
battery. The draw is tiny and the circuit and switch itself 1xx .25
or double the size of a typical 20 amp RC switch. I have tested the
product in the lab and i know a shop that could likely get the size
down to half its current size or close to the size of a standard
switch

This would of course cost some money out of pocket but I am not sure
if the target market is too limited to bother creating this solution
for. For the most part, the elite pilots I watch either don't even use
a switch or are very disciplined in their launch methodology. The
target market is more appropriately general pilots who may be
approaching the more senior years as well as new pilots.

What do you think people? At your local club have you seen anyone toss
an un-powered glider to its death? Would a product like this be of
value as a replacement for the standard on off switch for your more
senior members or new eager soaring enthusiasts?

[RCSE] BIG BIG BOX .... Electric Tug :-)

2008-01-31 Thread Craig Allen

Thanks to Brian Chan's post I purchased a Lanier Stinger from Tower Hobbies.
Hell, I even got an additional $20 off the already 1/2 off sale price.

Should make a great electric tow plane with an Axi 5345/16 turning as 21-14
prop with 12s3p A123 batteries.. I plan on making two 36 cell bricks that can
be easily interchanged. Using 3 9A chargers I should be able to recharge in as
little as 25 min.

We should now have 4 or 5 electric tugs in NorCal this flying season :-)

RE: [RCSE] Contest Format

2008-01-11 Thread Craig Allen
Well said Tom !

Tom Copp [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Wow lots of stuff here.

In general contests outside the USA are well attended. Contests attendance
inside the USA is diminishing. Why?

Outside the USA they typically fly F3J or a local version of F3J with F3B
winches that the pilots supply btw. They are strict about being on the line
in time; they don't soften the task for anyone. They play hardball over
there and their attendance is thriving.

Inside the USA most of our formats are the same since the late 70's while
our models have evolved over the last 30+ years the contests have not. Our
attendance is shrinking, we give in to a sandbagger, and we don't want to
change anything to keep the pilots we have coming back. We don't push
ourselves to try anything new and learn something. Sure the new guy has lots
to learn starting from zero but after 6 months what is next? Guys soaring is
not difficult.
How many of us are significantly better pilots after the first 2 or 3 years?
What have you learned the last 3 years? We quit flying if the conditions get
a little rough. You can choose your issue all day long as why we get board
or why attendance is shrinking.

BTW, Each and every contest I have been to is a social event! That's the
nature of humans. We tend to have fun when we can. I would say lets play a
little hardball and push our skills a bit and move up a peg. The USA was at
one time a soaring leader we sure can't say that anymore.

Also 200m is the legal line length for winch launches.. no skegs, but
you have to change the tape. If you don't have a skeg you shouldn't have
the tight numbers we have for landing, that won't stop the dorking, it
will only increase it, which is hard on ships.

the wing area of a Duck, and still launches fine. Flying 2M at the Nats, or
anywhere, is far more about decision making than ultimate launch height. Not
that it doesn't help, but time and again at the Nats you'll see the high guy
get beat by a bad turn or bad decision off launch.

Craig.

Once again, the winch requirement excludes the development of new 2M
designs and defaults the designs to the main requirement that they only
be able to haul the lines up. This requirement only favors those planes
that are commercially built or those that have so much wing area and
airfoil thickness that we get back into the old design arguments of
years past.

One of these days a plane will be able to take into account other design
factors besides this limited one.

IMHO

Gentleman,

Go with the winner... a Organic 2M. Craig Greening won 2007 NATS
flying the Organic 2M.

[RCSE] Re: Gordys behind the times :-) LoL

2008-01-04 Thread Craig Allen
Gordy you are not that dumb Someone already beat you too it

Someone at the IHLGF ( Don;t remember who.. Anybody?) had a 3m discus launch
glider... Thermaled for hours on cow farts

So 20 min would be no problem :-)

Craig... 2 funerals in two days :-(

You are really on to it with this shortening lines thing ! I sat around for
quite a few minutes before I thought of something even dumber ...but I
managed! :-)

I'm thinking with us getting older and the cost of fuel to lug winches
around, and if its really about pilot skill and thermal reading/working...lets
just hand toss the damn things and call for 20min tasks.

We'd be able to get in about 40 rounds per day so that would make contests
that much more attractive to attend, and of course set up would be minimal,
also no hassles with changing turnarounds for wind direction, and those
mysterious bastards who you all seem to know are out there who take advantage
of line breaks and pop offs, well 'they' will be out of luck with no lines to
break and no pop offs.

Setting up the models will be easier because there will be no need to agonize
over tow hook placement, elevator comps or camber switch programming. Those
of you who haven't figured out how to program your JR radios so that there's
no need to flip a switch to make the throttle stick camber or landing lever in
mid flight, again no worries, not needed any more.

Dang it makes so much sense, so logical, can't figure out why you guys didn't
think of this sooner!

That new 150 SupraDurpraIcon will devour the soaring scene! I mean it will
have to have a glide advantage and no worries about clogging up contests with
broken line concerns. (and will provide fodder to RC Groups about it having an
unfair advantage demanding that owners leave its tips off).

300'? I laugh! Lets show 'those' guys at contest that us real men want a
true soaring eventlets get rid of winches all together!
What do you think Chicago? You guys seem to have been sitting around thinking
up good ideas :-)

Shorten the lines and you can bet the line will get shorter.

Gordy :-)

For this year, I'd like to issue a challengeto the soaring community.
For 30 years, we've been launching as highas possible, trying to stay
aloft for 10 minutes, and coming down on aspot, carrying a skeg that
many times arrests on the line rather thanthe ground. That gets old...
in fact it got old a long timeago...

My challenge is to standardize the American TD winch, including line
strength, and to do away with landing skegs. I alsothink the
turnaround should be no more than 600' from the launchpoint. Let's put
some challenge back into this. Flame suitON!

[RCSE] Rick Walters , White Trash, And Handlaunch

2008-01-04 Thread Craig Allen
If you go back 35 years their was a kid in San Jose named Rick Walters who
designed a few gliders including the White Trash... Plans were published in
Model Builder. But not the Secret airfoil

Rick was the Very First to hand launch that I know of even before Dave
Thornberg

Use to piss us all off that he could hand launch into a thermal every time
Just think of that Joe guy, but 30 years ago :-

Craig.. Still have my White Trash :-)

[RCSE] Re: New Supra Info

2007-12-29 Thread Craig Allen
Daryl,

Here's an email I got some time ago from one of my East European friends with a
full description of the changes Vladimir made to some of his models...I posted
it on bayrc.com but forgot to post it here.

I changed the order so the Supra info is first. It looks like the hot setup is
the Supra Carbon / Glass Light :-)

Craig

Dear friends,

A year of hard work yielded a number of exciting new products we are

happy to offer to you for Christmas:

 3. Supra's ailerons became longer, they are now available across the
full length of the wings tip section.
4. Wings tip of Supra Glass have been redesigned, which reduced their
weight by 7...8 grams (0.25...0.28 oz)--now, they are 18...20 grams
(0.6...0.7 oz) lighter than the wing tips of Supra Carbon Light.
The new design also resulted in the greatly increased strength of the
ailerons.

In our opinion, the best combination for F3J competition is a model with
the central wing section from Supra Carbon or Supra Carbon Light and the
wing tips from Supra Glass. We call this combo Supra Carbon/Glass Light.

1. DLG Blaster2 is now also offered for left hand launch! When placing

an order, you can add a note which

version, left- or right-handed, you would like (by default, we ship

right-handed version).

2. Graphite 2 is now manufactured with a new nose section for electric

power system.

The new nose is much safer and more convenient:

  Your’s sincerely,

[RCSE] Old Old Servo Arms needed :-)

  Wanted old servo armsPosted by:
vh4143 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  Wed Dec 26, 2007 2:56 am(PST) G'day
all and all the best for the new year.

My old KRAFT gear is still going strong and is OK for gliders and some
power models. So from time to time I have inherited some old but good
stuff over the years. Some as spare parts and some useful.

A project that is in the wind I will need to buy a new wireless set.
Even my JR is approaching its 21st birthday.

I have 2 KPS-30 servos and very few arms.

Would any one have any servo arms to fit these oldies.

I believe that were made by Multiplex and re badged by KRAFT. They
have a black case, quite different from the KRAFT mustard.

The spline output on the servo measures 4.86mm.

If any one has any to trade or sell I would like to hear from you.
They are not the usual JR splines

Cheers and thanks in advance jq

[RCSE] Ralph Gustafson

2007-12-27 Thread Craig Allen
I thought I would repost this here as our soaring community in not just local
to SVSS Sacramento Ca. For those of you who have attended our Spring Fling you
might remember Ralph as the white haired tireless sole who ran the transmitter
impound.

Ralph Gustafson passed away on Christmas Evening at the age of 60.

Ralph was an all around nice guy and gentle sprint who is going to be
missed by many including myself.. I'm still in shock and can't believe
the friend who was always so so supportive and had such a positive
influence in my life is gone.

He was taken too too early dammit.

I'd like to tell you a short story about Ralph that many of you
 probably don't know

Some years ago my German friend Jochen came to visit and brought a
small EPP speed 400 racer with him that would fit into a suitcase...
Jocken asked me what I thought...Should he sell this plane or not? I
said it was EPP, it was Speed 400, it was crap So the next day we
meet Ralph at the field and Ralph goes crazy over this plane... I had
to admit it did fly nice... But Ralph was so supportive Jocken gave
him the plane before he left...

Jocken emailed me after his return to Germany and told me to look at
 this link

It was a link to the EPP plane... And what was its name? The Mini Ralf
When I asked Jocken about the name he laughed like not many
Germans do and said he had to name it after my friend Ralph because he
 was such a great guy

Jocken went on to sell several thousand of the Mini Ralf until it was
 discontinued just this year

Very few of us will ever have a plane named after us Ralph was
just that kind of special guy. I'm sure their is probably a Mini-Ralf
flying some were right now in honor of Ralph Gustafson :-)))
