Re: [RCSE] Question regarding 2.4GHz..Answer :-)

2008-03-25 Thread Ed Berris
SkyKing here. So far we do not have a solution for Spectrum 2.4GHz
systems. They all employ a fail safe which cannot be turned off. This
defeats our locator. The Futaba 2.4GHz 6 channel 2.4 GHz allows us to
use the gear channel on/off toggle switch to turn our locator on or off
without the need for turning the TX off.

I have never tested the Hobbico lost model device but it might work with
your 2.4 GHz TX. It triggers on when the device does not detect any
stick movement for a period of time. But, I'm not certain if it will
work since I have never tested one.

We will have a unit at some point but at the moment it is a back burner
project.

Greg and Gordy,

I am likewise a fan of these little beeper/finder/battery monitors.
This one from Sky King RC Products is my favorite.

http://www.skykingrcproducts.com/accessories/lostmodel/lost_rc_model_alarm.html

This is the only one I hav been able to get to work with both FM and
PCM. But I have not been able to get it to work with 2.4 GHz.
Spektrum receivers.

Gordy, you say you can make it work. Have you actually tried? If
you have been successful, perhaps you can give us a step by step. The
procedure I used for PCM did not work for 2.4 GHz Spektrum.

This is the same as with PCM, all you have to do is program a
failsafe function to the channel you have your plane finder plugged
into

to fire the response.

So if you are in Aux 4 for instance, program full travel the
other direction, that way when the TX is turned off simulating a lost
signal your device will trigger.

In the past on my 72MHz radios I have used a device in my planes

beeps when it loses the signal from the transmitter. This has
been handy to find a plane in the woods and to signal me when the

device

plugs into a spare channel.

The problem is that I have switched to the JR9303 2.4GHz radio
but with its failsafe this device always gets a signal so it doesn't
beep when I turn the transmitter off.

Anybody experienced this? Is there something new that will
work with the 2.4GHZ radios?

Re: [RCSE] Durable Paint?

2006-03-31 Thread Ed Berris
I think you will find that the industrial company that made the old KB line
is the same company that produces Klass Cote. All the components in the
paint are the same. It smells like KB, it goes on like KB and it is as
good as KB because that's what it was/is.

As for airbrushing etc. If you are preparing a fuselage you do not need a
spray outfit. You can mix KlassKote primer with mircroballoons to make a
thin paste like substance that can be BRUSHED on to a bare fiberglass
fuselage. When it cures it will look like hell but one you sand it you will
be left with a fuselage that has the pin holes filled. You can then BRUSH
on another application of primer without the microballoons and sand that
back to a smooth ready to paint surface.

This is by far my favorite paint when I can paint outdoors. It's smell does
not go well with indoor painting, however. Needless to say, wear a proper
paint mask. This stuff is dangerous to breathe as most paints are including
Krylon.

Imron is supposed to be painted in a sealed room with more than normal
exhaust fans, and a fresh air respirator. It's REALLY bad stuff as Jeff
 points out.

Funny isn't it, all the really good stuff will kill you. Now we get
watered
down stuff, like Krylon and have to consider it a 'good' paint.

Go with Rustoleum or Klass Kote. Me, I stocked up on KB as soon as I
heard
it was going off the market. I've got just enough to last me until I'm
done
with this hobby in my 80's or 90's. ;-)

Worse than a carcinogen is that Imron is additive and will destroy your
liver. It never purges from your system. I have heard about guys that
died after spraying IMRON too many times without a respirator..
Always spray with at least a basic volatile orgranic filter respirator
or a pump. I happen to have both.. The pump style of respirator is also
 excellent for 2 part systems...

I agree about Krylon being too soft... white nearly turns black by the
end of a couple of flying sessions and can't be cleaned off.

 George Voss wrote:

Frankly, I hate Krylon. It scratches easily and isn't very durable in my
 opinion.

For the best paint, use Imron. The problem with it of course is that
it's
 a
carcinogen. It's VERY bad stuff. Next on the list would be the old KB
if
 you can find some.

Klass Kote is the best paint currently available. It's expensive and
 you'll
need at least an airbrush, but a small spray gun is better.

As for surface prep, I sand or scrape the joint line and wet sand the
 entire
nose cone with 600 or 1000 grit sandpaper wet. Use 3M fine line masking
tape. It's a type of plastic and it stretches around corners fairly
well.
If you are shooting over white and you are using a dark canopy color, you
can shoot a dust coat, wait 15 minutes, shoot a flow coat and remove the
tape while the paint is still wet. If not, use white primer over the
 canopy
area and then shoot the color.

Let the painted nose cone sit in a heated area for 3-4 days untouched.
 Sand
the edges of the canopy so they blend in with the nose cone. I put 3M
pinstripe tape around the paint line and then clear coat the entire nose
 cone.

I've got some photos of a finished nose cone if you want to see one.

If you want a rattle can finish, use Rustoleum. Be aware that you will
 need
to allow the paint to dry in a heated area for at least 3 days before
handling or you will get fingerprints. Other than that, use the same
 method
as above except heat the spray can with hot tap water prior to spraying.
 It
will keep the paint from shooting blobs out of the nozzle. Also, if
 maximum
finish points are desired, use a new can of paint. Sometimes old, used
 cans
will shoot blobs out, even when heated.

George, I think you answered your own question. Yes, many of the How To
videos are a bit dry but it is the information that is being conveyed that
most everyone is looking for. Therefore, don't make the video a stand up
routine. Just present the information is a clear and succinct fashion.

The close up camera work, lighting and steady camera work are far more
important to me.

I'm sure most of us have seen how to videos on RC soaring and a plethora
of other subjects. The most common response I hear is that the person
showing us how to do stuff is boring. I usually overlook that fact when
I'm watching because I'm most interested in the material being shown, not
 the personality showing it.

My question is this: How can RC How To video personalities make the
video
 more interesting?

My wife an I have come up with a couple of ideas; having trivia questions,
showing one-page comics like the dummy books have, telling humorous
jokes
or short stories and several other things. My concern with each of them
is
that when a person is watching the video for the 10th time, the jokes and
 such get 'old.

Please send me your opinions direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or feel free to
 post them to RCSE.

cone molds.

These are production quality molds with a lot of

Naturally, if you did not want a "T" tail you could
easily produce a conventional tail by clipping off the very top of the fin and

Jim, I don't think you are correct in your
assertion that the reason for limited space being devoted to soaring is the lack
of columnist. You are kidding aren't you, or haven't you seen Darwin's by
line. If you haven't you aren't even up to speed on this topic.
Sometimes opinion before knowledge gets foot in mouth.

I have spoken to Bob Hunt. He tells a
completely different version than yours. Somehow I think he probably knows
the reason. He told me that it was the fact that soaring represents a much
smaller segment of the hobby than some of the other activities that are reported
on. Additionally, soaring is segmented further by the different
disciplines. Thermal duration, slope, electric and on and on.

About the only thing I think you had right was that
Bob Hunt does not single out soaring for special treatment either pro or
con. Yes, I do agree that it SEEMS like control line maybe gets more
attention than it deserves based upon participation but since I don't have any
concrete numbers at hand I'll trust that Bob wants to do right by all
segments.

Check out Darwin's column. I think you'll see
that he's doing a great job. He had a hard act to follow with Mike Garton as his
predecessor.

Why is it that just because there is no soaring

reason is that we currently don't have a columnist for soaring. Why don't you
step up and put it together? Dave Garwood does the slope soaring column which
usually appears every other month but currently there is not a columnist
writing about our interests. I can also assure you that Bob Hunt is pro
soaring. Although most of his life has been spent with controline I have

adjustable vacuum pressure valve, new vacuum pressure gauge, exhaust muffler,
intake filter and hose barb. This pump pulls 25” hg (at sea level) , which is

Title: Receivers, modules, vacuum pumps and other items for sale

George, what function does the reservoir serve if
you don't use a check valve or switch. All you need is the pump, a filter
and a manifold to attach the hoses and a vacuum relief valve to adjust the
vacuum pressure. Without the adjustability for vacuum pressure you can
easily crush white bead foam..

Re: [RCSE] Some Thoughts on AMA

2005-11-01 Thread Ed Berris
Tim, take off your flame suit. I think you covered the topic very well and
I am in agreement with your thoughts.

I've spoken to the editor of the AMA magazine. It was clear to me that he
felt that the soaring community was a tiny part of our hobby. He still
seems to think that control line flying is the end all of the hobby.

Sad to see Mike Garton leave and that soaring has been significantly reduced
in the magazine.

The lack of coverage of the NATS is further evidence that the AMA is out of
touch with what is happening within our hobby.

Subject: [RCSE] Some Thoughts on AMA

All the comments I have read on this exchange over the last two days bring
to mind some ideas that have been boiling in my mind for a couple of years
regarding the Academy of Model Aeronautics and how it is organized.

First, a little background regarding me. I have been a model airplane
hobbyist for forty-eight years. My father and his brother were modelers
before me. Like many others in the RC soaring branch of the hobby, I have
built and flown FF, CL, RC gas, and electric models over the years, but
have been pretty much exclusive to RC soaring for the last fifteen years.
I
fly with the Soaring League of North Texas (SLNT) in the Dallas/ Ft Worth
area and am an AMA contest director. I think you could say I am an active
 contest flyer.

Holding thirty-one club contests a year, SLNT may be the most active
competition club in the country. There are thirteen unlimited sailplane
contests including two separate contest days of the Texas National
Tournament (TNT) each year. We will complete a total of fifteen
handlaunch/DLG contests this year. There were also three RES events
including one at TNT. I have flown in all but about three of these events
over the past five or six years and have been CD of all the handlaunch
events for the last six years. Attendance at these competitions has ranged
from about eight to forty-five entrants with the average being between
fifteen and twenty per event. Except for this year, SLNT has obtained AMA
sanctions for about fourteen of these contests each year for at least as
many years as I have been involved.

My issue with the organization of AMA is that AMA is governed by an
executive council made up of elected regional vice presidents. These
officers are elected by AMA members within a geographic area regardless of
their interest in the various disciplines of the hobby. For the most part
geographical areas are irrelevent to the issues affecting AMA. It is clear
to me that this system is doing a poor job of representing and dealing
with
the needs of a large portion of the hobby, including soaring. Model
aviation has evolved into a diverse set of disciplines with many AMA
members
specializing in just one or a small subset of these disciplines. There do
not seem to be many pylon racers who fly sailplanes, helicopters, indoor
free flight, and control line carrier as well. How effectively are they
represented by their regional vice president?

I believe that this system should be replaced by a realignment of the
governing board along the lines of special interest groups representing
the
modeling disciplines. Each special interest group should function as a
separate division of the organization with its own funding and staff. The
executive council should be made up of the heads of these groups with some
form of proportional representation based on the number of members in each
group. Members having interests in multiple special interest groups should
be given the opportunity to join multiple groups paying dues reflecting
 these multiple interests.

The current organization of AMA is a legacy of the state of the sport in
the
1930's and 1940's when the academy was formed. Just making a model fly
was
a major achievement in those days. With rare exceptions, free flight was
the
only choice. Competition was primarily segmented along the lines of the
age
of the flyer and how the free flight models were powered. Junior, Senior,
and Open flyers flew glider, rubber, or gas free flight models in AMA
events. The interests of modelers in Virginia were different from those
in
California and representation was needed primarily to address those
regional
 interests.

Today, age group competition is almost non-existent. Flyers travel the
whole country to fly in AMA events within their special interests. There
are at least eight different segments of RC soaring each having their own
needs regarding safety, insurance, flying sites, air space, competition
regulation, radio frequency control, and launch equipment issues. These
segments include electric, flat land thermal, slope, dynamic, hand launch,
aero-tow, F3J, and F3B. AMA's regional vice presidents, for the most part,
 have no awareness let alone

Re: [RCSE] Model Aviation Editor's reply

2005-11-01 Thread Ed Berris
I am not at all surprised by the response your recevied from Hunt. I too
have spoken with him and received a similar reaction.

From his point of view, we hardly exist. Further, he seems to think that
his personal interests trump those of his membership. I do realize that
someone has to make decisions that will not always please everyone but Hunt
displays a rather arragont attitude that does not wear well with me.

I guess I thought we were their customers not their serfs.

Maybe if we attached a control line to our gliders, slope models and DS
planes Hunt would have a more receptive attitude.

 Fellow forum members,
I normally don't post private responses in this forum but, by posting
this portion of Bob Hunt's (MA Editor) reply to my comments on the 2005
NATS
MA issue, I can lower my blood pressure a few points. The portion
follows:

I appreciate your comments, but please understand that this was not a
Nats
Issue. There was a Nats overview report by Mark (Sorry you didn't like
it),
and that's all we intend to do in the future. We published 271 pages of
Nats
reports on a daily basis on the web, and that's how we have decided to
cover
the Nats from here on. I'm a competitor, too, and at first I didn't like
the
idea either. Now I find it to be the only reasonable way to produce proper
coverage and in a timely manner.

The competitor is now in the minority in AMA. In fact, less than 5 percent
of our membership compete in any manner at all. We simply cannot justify
devoting all of 1/12 of our yearly editorial pages to just one meet - even
if it is the Nats. The daily reporting concept gives up to the minute news
and it will continue to be how we report on the Nats. Hopefully next
year's
Nats overview in Model Aviation will be written from a more acceptable
perspective. We are trying to adjust our magazine coverage to reflect the
actual membership and their interests. Tough job...

One wonders if we'll see more soaring content in future issues? Probably
not until we can figure out how to hang our sailplanes by the nose ala'
the aircraft on this month's cover. Let's see now - if competition is a
minority then competitive soaring must be ...

Thanks for letting me vent - I feel much better now,
 Jim Deck

[RCSE] vacuum pump system for sale

2005-10-19 Thread Ed Berris

I've been selling vacuum pump set ups to modelers
for almost 12 years. This one might be the nicest yet. The system
includes a diaphragm pump that is really quiet. The pump has a built in
fan for cooling but in addition there is a computer type whisper fan in the
enclosure. (Photo available - email request)

Everything is contained in a metal cabinet with a
carry handle on top, a large 2.5" vacuum gauge that reads from 0 - 30 IN Hg, a
vacuum relief valve that makes adjusting vacuum levels from 1" Hg all the up to
20" Hg which is more than sufficient for any bagging process. There is a
hose barb on the front panel and an on/off push button switch. These
systems sell for over $450 new.

This is a unit with very low usage and is very
clean. $165 plus $15 for Fedex Ground insured shipping anywhere in the
lower 48 states.

Try making a block that will sit on top of the v-tail at the root. (Angle
the bottom of the block to match the v-tail angle.) Now you can set a small
bubble level on the block to measure the v-tail incidence. Raise the tail
until the bubble is perfectly centered, and then use a meter to set the wing
incidence.

I’ve never flown a Snipe, but I doubt you’ll need that much positive
incidence. I’d start around 1 degree I think. (Enough to be sure it isn’t
negative.)
My own fast wingerons are set up at 0-0, or very close to it.

[RCSE] EPP Trainers

2005-08-30 Thread Ed Berris
I thought I'd chime in here to bring some clarity and new information that
some will find useful.

I have the rights to produce DAW kits in the United States. My web site is:
www.skykingrcproducts.com You will find many of the DAW kits are currently
available including the Schweitzer 1-26 2 meter as well as a 60 aileron
version and a 60 polyhedral version. Soon I will be reintroducing the 48
warbird series and the mini-warbirds as well.

But the good news is that we are developing a 100 polyhedral EPP trainer
that we think will eclipse the Highlander in flight performance. This is a
proven design concept originally developed to train new pilots by Mike Remus
and Darwin Garrison. Both have extensive design and flying experience.
Mike has achieved his LSF level 5 and Darwin is not only an experienced
pilot but also an engineer and kit maker.

I am awaiting CAD drawings so we are not just starting but along the way to
getting this design into production.

I'll keep you posted by way of the soaring exchange as we get closer to
production and shipping.

In the mean time, if you are looking for a fantastic slope trainer check out
the 1-26's on our web page. These ships have taught hundreds of pilot
aspirants to fly.

Since the external antenna is back ordered, I only had the unit
  itself.
The advertised range is 'up to 300 feet' but in fact that is an
accurate statement...it is 'possible' for it to work at that but everything
  has to be just right.
Its real range is about 50' on the field with cars, tents, trees in
  the its line of sight.

It works GREAT and everyone should own one, but be clear, it is not for
checking the general flying site for competing signals...at least not without
  the external antenna.

There was a guy about half way to the turn arounds on flying an electric
and it did not read it, and I was at my truck on the parking area and about
100' away there were TX's on and I was not reading it.

Inspite of all that, pretty much everyone there is ordering one, very
tiny and easy to use before you turn on anything else and a nice device to
verify your TX synth module dial is reading a 6 not an 8 :-)

Gordy, I'm sure the Hobbico unit is everything you say it is but I guess
you just aren't familiar with the Royal Evo scanner option. First, it
doesn't cost a few hundred. It's about $100. Second, it not only
scans all the frequencies but it also won't allow you to transmit if one of the
50 frequencies is occupied.

I guess the Hobbico unit would be good for anyone that doesn't have an Evo
with the Scanner unit which would probably be most of the market.

Thanks for theEvoinfo, but I was posting
information about the Hobbico Frequency Checker. Evo owners will be
happy to know that they don't need one, if they have paid a few hundred for
  the Evo option :-)

The Frequency Checker is a cool and tiny 'tool' that everyone
should have including Evo owners with the option installed

Fits in any flight kit and with the flick of a switch gives
the looker an at a glance view of all 50 freqs busy or open...'nearby'.

If anyone else has tried one with an external antenna hooked
up, post us your findings. Pretty sure you could find an antenna to fit at
Radio Shack. Might need a little mod to plug in but its just a single point
connection. Likely a piece of coat hanger would do it :-)

[RCSE] trouble with balsa dust

I realize this is not a medical forum, however, I suspect that others of you

I seem to have developed quite a sensitivity to balsa dust. With just a
small exposure it triggers asthma like symptoms including a nagging cough,
wheezing, a tightness in my chest and sometime dizziness or severe cold like
symptoms.

I wonder if others have had a similar experience and what they are doing so
that they can continue working with balsa without becoming ill.

I know that a good quality dust mask will be a must. I have seldom worn on
in the past but I can see that I will need to now.

Miserable in Minnesota,

[RCSE] Klass Kote VS the others

2005-04-14 Thread Ed Berris
Harley, I have a feeling you have not priced other industrial paints
recently and that might be why the sticker shock. I built a street rod
several years ago and used one of PPG's automotive urethane paints. Last
year I went to an automotive paint store to buy some paint to cover a pedal
car I am building for my grandson. The materials I used were no longer
available due to pollution or hazardous materials laws but what was
available was so expensive I almost fainted when the clerk told me I had
over $300 worth of materials.

I've found Klass Kote to be the same as the old KB product. In fact, I
think it is possible that the same company that produces this material for
Klass Kote also produced it for KB.

As for price..I think it is well worth the cost. Krylon just doesn't
even come close to this stuff for durability and depth of sheen. Yes, I do
use a gun and yes it does take more effort than shaking a can but I really
like this stuff.

Their primer is hands down the very best primer I have ever used. Here's a
trick I learned a long time ago when I could still get KB white primer. I
would mix microballons and epoxy primer to a very thick cream consistency.
I would apply it with a brush. This would fill all the pin holes, scratches
and other imperfections in a glass fuselage. After it cured I sanded most
of it off leaving a nearly ready to paint surface.

No doubt many guys would just spray on their color coat at that point but I
like to shoot one more thin coat of primer before the color coat.

I have used the waterbased finish mixed with talc to fill the weave in
fiberglass and found it to work quite well but my favorite is still the
Klass Kote products.

If I'm painting up a sloper that I know is going to look rough after a few
flights I'll use Rustoleum or Krylon but if I want the finish to last I'll
make the effort to use Klass Kote.

For what it's worth,
Ed

Re: [RCSE] Barry Kennedy and Kennedy Composites

2005-04-09 Thread Ed Berris

There isn't just one good plane available at the
moment. Yes, I know the Ava is a great plane but if you are having such a
tough time why not be open to other good, high performance planes like the
Ava. Have you considered the Soprano from Isthmus Models? It's a
beauty and it's winning contests. It's a newer model so maybe you have
never seen one before. Here's the URL:http://www.isthmusmodels.com/pages/soprano.html
Mark Miller offers this model. I can tell you from first hand experience
that he is a pleasure to do business with.

Dave Edmunson sells a model similar to the
Ava. It's called the Ukrainian Buzzard. I don't have Dave's web URL
but his e-mail address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dave is an old free flight champ who helped develop the Buzzard.

Both of these guys will respond quickly to your
needs.

Frankly, I've done business with Barry Kennedy
before and always found him to be helpful and reliable but since it sounds like
Traun is about to see the top of his head blow clean off his shoulders I thought
this might be of interest.

One thing though that Traun and other yelpers ought
to know. This is a hobby. It is not life or death. The people
that supply these models to you are modelers themselves. They have jobs,
families and other time constraints. You are not dealing with large
companies with a staff to help. The bitchers and complainers are the
reason that many of these people throw in the towel and say; "to hell with
this business. I can't stand dealing with the jerks. I'm closing up
shop."

It only takes a few impatient, immature, short
tempered, whiners to screw things up.
Give Barry a break why don't you and if you can't
do that cancel your order and get something else but please save your anger for
when it's really important. Life is too short.

Of course that's just my opinion.

I had the same problem as Tuan Le'and I wrote Barry a couple of
times just recently. Finally I said if it hasn't ship just cancel the
order. I had the plane 2 days later. Here's the real problem,
Barry has the market cornered on the AVA. From what I can tell it's the
superior or one of the superior planes for RES. Unfortunately you can't
get it from anyone else, trust me I tried since I have a very good friend that
is one of Vladimir's distributors. This to me is tough when you want a
specific plane and only one resource. If that resource is busy or out of
stock you are hosed and have to wait. Anyway, I got my AVA and it's a
beautiful plane but I was a bit irritated to say the least at the time frame
it took me to get it. Oh and yes it was in stock when I ordered
it. Anywaythings happen good luck Tuan Le' I'm sure you will like
  the plane.

Yesterday I decided to bag the latest version of my DLG. When I got the
bag set up I found that it leaked...again. Seems like every time that I
start to do some bagging I have to spend an inordinate amount of time to
get a non-leaking bag. You know, the kind where you can leave the pump
off after pulling the vacuum. Many of you guys (and dolls?) have been to

you do in this regard? How do you create a never-fail bag? What tricks
work for you? I hope that this doesn't start a thread as contentious as
the one on the new JR frequency synthesized transmitter modules did.

Re: [RCSE] Re: [soaring] harbor freight vaacum pump, any use?

2005-02-08 Thread Ed Berris
I was interested in your reason for using a reservoir, relay, vacuum switch
etc. You stated the reason was so that the pump does not have to run all
the time.

Be aware that most vacuum pumps are actually designed for 24/7 operation
cycles. The constant starting and stopping associated with the type of
system you are talking about actually subjects your pump to much more wear
rather than less.

In addition, a system that uses more parts is also subject to more reasons
for failure.

A bad switch or contact can cause your valuable lay-up to be ruined if
failure should occur during the initial stages of curing.

A pump that runs continuously is far less prone to failure.

That's been my experience. You will also find that the people that use this
type of equipment the most will use a vacuum pump without all the other
plumbing. See Phil Barnes' vacuum bagging video and you'll see how he has
his shop set up. No switch or reservoir.

It's less expensive, less parts required and less likely to fail.

My two cents worth.

FWIW, I recently updated my page on adding an electronic vacuum
switch by making it simpler via using a solid-state relay (I got
three new-in-box 25 Amp ones for $20 USD from an Ebay auction).

My mechanical switch page needs an update too (gonna simplify
it for the electronics shy), but it works; I used it before
I bought a pair of digital electronic switches from Ebay.

[RCSE] Lawyers are killing the kit business

2005-02-03 Thread Ed Berris
I found this article on www.instapundit.com. It tells what lawyers are
doing that can hurt small model makers.

Don Stackhouse already found out first hand what the impact of these
shakedown lawsuits) are all about but I thought you all might want to read
this. Here it is:

Lawyers Lay Waste to Military Models Industry
by James Dunnigan
February 3, 2005
Discussion Board on this DLS topic

For over half a century, kits have been sold that enable military history
buffs to assemble scale models of military ships, aircraft and vehicles. But
that era is coming to an end, as the manufacturers of the original
equipment, especially aircraft, are demanding high royalties (up to $40 per
kit) from the kit makers. Since most of these kits sell in small quantities
(10-20,000) and are priced at $15-30 (for plastic kits, wooden ones are
about twice as much), tacking on the royalty just prices the kit out of the
market. Popular land vehicles, which would sell a lot of kits, are missing
as well. The new U.S. Army Stryker armored vehicles are not available
because of royalty requirements. Even World War II aircraft kits are being
hit with royalty demands.

These royalty demands grew out of the idea that corporations should maximize
intellectual property income. Models of a companys products are considered
the intellectual property of the owner of a vehicle design. Some
intellectual property lawyers have pointed out that many of these demands
are on weak legal ground, but the kit manufacturers are often small
companies that cannot afford years of litigation to settle this contention.
In the past, the model kits were considered free advertising, and good
public relations, by the defense firms. The kit manufacturers comprise a
small industry, and the aircraft manufacturers will probably not even notice
if they put many of the model vendors out of business. Some model companies
will survive by only selling models of older (like World War I), or
otherwise no royalty items (Nazi German aircraft) and ships. But the
aircraft were always the bulk of sales, and their loss will cripple many of
the kit makers. Some of the vehicle manufacturers have noted the problem,
and have lowered their demands to a more reasonable level (a few percent of
the wholesale price of the kits).

I guess model kit makers will have to rename their models to avoid these
bottom feeding lawyers.

Re: [RCSE] Most fun plane

2004-11-25 Thread Ed Berris
Louis, that's an easy question for me to answer. I'd have to say I've had
the most fun with my Weasel Pro. It was a very well designed kit with very
complete and well written directions so that anyone can build this bird and
have it flying in short order.

I've flown mine is very low wind conditions and also 30mph winds with no
ballast. I've had it specked out in thermals while on the slope. It packs
small and can be in your back seat or trunk ready to fly or you can travel
with it by removing the tail. It's rugged and can tank the punishment that
a no pilot will give it.

I don't know of a better kit for the money and I'm in the kit business
myself. My only criticism is that it's not one of my products. I like this
kit so much that I built three of them. Two for me and one for my son.

I would like to know what plane you had the most fun with.

I admit my Boomerang was the plane I had most fun with. I can throw it
in any slope condition I meet without worrying.
Sometimes I ballast it when the wind is really blowing. My Boomerang
lost its rigidity long time ago because it met earth, trees, etc. so
 many times...

 But it still flies fine.

I will rebuild it or build a new one for next summer. I cannot consider
 living without one.

I'm looking forsuggestions for a release wax for vac bagging and/or
molding. Out here in the boonies it takes a while to get the real stuff and my
last tub went dry before I could use it up.

I recall suggestions for Mother's or Meguiar's paste wax with carnauba.
Both versions at the local O'Reilly's have a cleaning compound. Is that OK? I
should know by tomorrow when I pop open this bag but I'm still curious about
  any comments.

Tried the liquid Meguiar's with carnauba (no cleaning compound) and it
  didn't work too well.

That's about what we have locally.

Dr. Zog didn't make it this far inland.
We don't have PVA in the local weed 'n feed.

Bill, Laser Arts sells one that could work for you. It's called a Jester.
You can see it at: http://www.laserartco.com/sailplane.htm
Also the LilBird from SkyBench. I believe it can be built with spoilers but
you can ask Ray. http://www.skybench.com/index.html
Also Isthmus models has the Mistral 2 meter. If it flies anywhere near as
good as the 3 meter version this one is a real champ. See it at Mark's

If those three don't make it for you I'd be surprised.

[RCSE] Obeechi Question

2004-10-09 Thread Ed Berris
It's been awhile since I've used Obeechi for wing skins. I'm about to bag
some Shrike and Elf wings.

I know there is a right side and a wrong side to the veneer. I just don't
remember which is which.

If you look closely at Obeechi you can see that on one side the grain
appears to be raised while on the other side it seems to be indented. Which
is the outside face?

[RCSE] Obeechi answer

2004-10-09 Thread Ed Berris
Ok, thanks to Barry Kennedy I got the answer. For the three people that
might be interested here it is:

Obeechi has an inside and outside to the veneer. The inside (glue surface)
has slightly raised grain while the outside grain is very slightly indented.
You can see the differences in just the right light.

More as it happens,

[RCSE] Obeechi correction

2004-10-09 Thread Ed Berris
Ed, Ben and the three others out there that still work with obeechi.

My last post seems to be in contradiction with what others think.

So, I called my all knowing friend in California, Harris Nelson. He's
probably used more Obeechi than most anyone else in the hobby other than
maybe Ed Whyte.

Harris confirmed what Ed Skorepa told me. The raised grain side goes face
out. The indented side is the glue side.

Why you ask? Because it is easy to sand down the raised grain but
impossible to sand down the indented side.

If you are using water based finish, and I am, it would take much more
finish to produce a glass smooth surface because you would have build up
successive coats just to fill the indented grain.

So much for my memory. In fairness to Barry Kennedy he did tell me to
lightly sand both sides and then select the side that looked the best.

So there you have it. Everything I remembered was wrong but thanks to
friends and the soaring exchange I got the emmece from the obeechi maven.

Most Obeche is not rotary cut but plane sliced. Rotary cut veneers are
low grade, porous, and not good for veneering wings. Much of what you
are seeing is due to the fact that the veneer is cut on freshly steamed
logs to increase their elasticity and soften the wood. The better
veneers exhibit very little of this bumpy phenomenon.
This thread is the most silly I have seen in a while, the only reason
this might make any difference (using one side or other) is if you are
clear coating and not covering wings with covering, and then what
possible weight difference would it make to fill with a lightweight
filler such as talc or water based sanding sealer. The wood is porous
from both sides regardless of bumps. It will need sanding, (profiling)
sealing and filling irregardless of bumps.
Pick the side you like and go for it.

Those little bumps are caused by cutter knife. They
are ripped from the other side. The veneer is cut from
log while rotating. It's much easier to sand off those
bumps (which may adds up to maybe 1% of surface) than
try to sand smooth the other side with dings. Thus
 bumps side outside.

A number of vendors make these that plug into the
RX and make a noise when the TX is off/out of range, I have one. Very
useful if you land in very long grass on the slope in a reasonable
  manner.

Fortunately (touch wood) I have not had any
problem landings at a distance for some time. In the days when I was
learningor had some technical issue the landing outnormally
involved some amount of higher landing speed. This frequently leads to a
movement of kit in the place which can disconnect components from the power
  source.

Therefore are there any vendors out there that
can build one that would carry a lithium watch style battery as a power source
and preferably be thin so that it would emit a noise if the TX was off or if
it had no power from the RX. I think thiswould require electronic
arming by switching the RX on and an off button on the unit.

Sounds like it could be a YNT project
  ??

  Any takers ??

Re: [RCSE] AVA Issue at Nats

2003-07-28 Thread Ed Berris
The issue of a TX that is not properly tuned strikes close to home. On a
recent slope trip I experienced a great deal of radio interference. A few
weeks after the trip I learned that one of the fellows on the trip with us
was changing crystals in his TX and I believe that was the reason for the
trouble..an out of tune TX.

Wouldn't it make sense at an event like the NATS that the impound area scan
all TX's before allowing them on the field.

It seems that this extra effort would have saved you and many others the
expense, frustration and disappointment.

That's just a tough situation all around which really affected me last
week, and I am having a tough time writing publicly about it, so I won't
 write much...

No respectful pilot on a contest field ever tries to shoot anyone down, it
is always some sort of accident. Unfortunately at a contest like the
Nats,
your crashed flight gets scored, so not only do you lose the model,
(probably your primary in that situation), unless you are flying an event
that allows a throw out round, you acquire a score that will basically
takes you out of the top 10 too. You may loose that model for other
events
later in the week, and if the model is hard to get, you may loose it for
several contests in the future. It's just not a nice situation to be in.

I lost two of my favorite models last week with radio situations that were
out of my control, my green ICON lite that I was very successful with, and
my brand new AVA that was really growing on me as model that I liked.

The thing I learned this year at Nats was how generous other pilots can be
when you are in that situation (which I had never been in), and I had so
many guys step up and either offer lending models to me or parts. It was
unbelievable! I am still so touched by all of this. Jim McCarthy lent me
his F3J ICON to fly in UNL right after my ICON lite piled in in F3J, and
when my AVA was destroyed in RES it was Capn' Jack who was first over and
lent me his Aquila Grande XL so I could finish the RES contest.

You can quit or you can fly... my friends helped me so that I could fly,
 and that is really cool.

is about. So, if you don't like this sort of thing I'd hit delete before
you go any further. But, for those of you that want to know before you
spend your money about vendors that do not support their customers read
on. First I will print the reply that I received from Balsa Products
regarding a purchase oftwo smallelectric motors and then I'll fill
in the blanks:

"Ed,
No, we are not interested in figuring
outyour problem. I cannot provide you that kind of service and stay
in business. It is just not cost
effective.
Dave"

Now here's the background. I purchased two small gear drive motors
for a small electric model. When they arrived I found that they did not
fit the gear box that they were purchased for. The motor drive gear was
too large. I asked Balsa Products to exchange the motors I purchased from
them for the right one. I offered to send them back along with the gear
box and the burned out motor at my expense and have the replacements sent to me
at my expense.

You decide if this looks like the kind of customer service you would expect
to receive. I've made up my mind.
