[RCSE] Insurance Question

2006-01-27 Thread GRW
Has anyone really read the insurance policy from Westchester on the AMA site? According to the verbage there is a $250,000 Self Insured Retention. The verbage "Self Insured Retention" is a fancy way of saying "Deductible". I know I certainly couldn't afford a deductible this high and I realize some damage would or could be covered under my home owners policy but how protected are we? So does anyone know where in the 57 pages of the liability policy where it states something different? Thanks--Glenn W.Tri-Cities, Wa

Re: [RCSE] Loss of Eagle Butte

2006-01-22 Thread GRW
Tom,To be added to the hang-gliding guy's insurance means that we wouldhave to join USHGA. Not a big deal but USHGA might have an issue with insuraning models and not hangliding pilots. The HG's pay an exta 2k a year to use the site which makes it the most expensive place in the United States for Hang-Gliding insurance. So there has been some discussion on this topic but it doesn't seem like a probable direction.I did have a talk with the guy that runs the hangliding group and ask for some information about their supplemental insurance and I know that the MCS President has this information so that could be an avenue and suspect that Doug has already gone this route. I haven't talked to Doug recently but have a call and email into him to see where everything stands. Hopefully there will be good news soon. Thanks for the ideas and

Scott,

Moving to the Pacific Northwest and Spokane will give you many great opportunities to fly a variety of contests. I am thankful I live in this area as the the Northwest Soaring Society, Inland Empire, Seattle Area Soaring Society (SASS), Portland Area Soaring Society (PASS)and Mid-Columbia Soarer's put on several contests a year. You will only be 2 hours away from one of the premier slope sites in the US (Eagle and Kiona Butte), there is aerotowing that goes on all over Washington and the NWSS people are a great bunch to fly with. There is a schedule of events that is on the NWSS website, this next year wewill have the 30th Annual NWSS Tournament here in Pasco, WA. The 2006 events will be posted I'm sure soon.

There is HLG flying all over and in my oppinion some of the top pilots that make up the IHLGF live and compete in Seattle.

So whatever you fly you will be in great shape and have plenty to choose from. Here is the NWSS Site. http://www.northwestsoaringsociety.org/index.htmlThanks.--Glenn W.Tri-Cities, Wa

I had the same problem as Tuan Le'and I wrote Barry a couple of times just recently. Finally I said if it hasn't ship just cancel the order. I had the plane 2 days later. Here's the real problem, Barry has the market cornered on the AVA. From what I can tell it's the superior or one of the superior planes for RES. Unfortunately you can't get it from anyone else, trust me I tried since I have a very good friend that is one of Vladimir's distributors. This to me is tough when you want a specific plane and only one resource. If that resource is busy or out of stock you are hosed and have to wait. Anyway, I got my AVA and it's a beautiful plane but I was a bit irritated to say the least at the time frame it took me to get it. Oh and yes it was in stock when I ordered it. [RCSE] MCS HLG Contest Success

2003-07-02 Thread GRW
I want to personally say thank you to everyone that came to the first ever Tri-Cities HLG contest (A.K.A. the TCIHLGF). I feel it was a success pulling some of the best pilots in from the upper Northwest, and a flyer all the way from Germany (hence International, not to be confused with the IHLGF) not to forget the new and up-comming folks from the local area. In total we had 12 pilots competingwhich was perfect in size.

It wasa very close fight with 1 point separating 1st - Phil Pearson and 2nd place - Adam Weston and rounding out 3rd in Expert Class was Tim Johnson.

In Sportsman Class 1st Placewent to Don Stewart, 2nd Place went to Doug Coleman and 3rd Place went to Joe Campbell. All of these guys were flying their first HLG contest and did very well. Congrates

The plane of choice is seems to still bethe Encore. I know I need to step up to at least be more competitive with them. There were several designs including planes from Jay Decker, Doug Coleman and I flew a Photon (It only took me a year to get it in the air).

Special Thanks goes out to Scobie Puchtler of Liftworx for taking the time to fly over in his Cessna 140 and putting ona demo with his Seeker. This is a cool plane that breaks down into a box just bigger than the width of a wing panel. It launches big and flies great. Contact Scobie([EMAIL PROTECTED]) to order one and big thanks to Liftworx for sponsering the contest with a kit. Tim Johnson was the lucky winner of the kit ( I was s close ). Additional thanks goes to Adam Weston for helping me run my first contest, Jay Decker, Kirby Park, Doug Coleman for helping me get all the supplies and everyone else that pitched in. I think we accomplished what we wanted to for our first contest letting some new fliers get a tasteon how the big dogs do it. This was a very low keyed event and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Next year I'll do a bbq guys. I look forward to hosting more HLG's in the future.

Don't forget about the Pacific NW Hand Launch Glider Regional AMA Contest, 60 Acres Park (A. Weston)(field closed to all but contestants) in September. I hope to be there to show the support and to get my butt kicked some more so I can cry to the boss about needing and Encore. This has been a center of conversation many times in our meetings. This is a privately owned hill and we have to be very careful how we use that site. For those of you that haven't been to Eaglebutte in sometime they are rapidly building homes in and around the area and it would take only a second for flames to hit the houses from the top of the slope. Model accidents aren't uncommon. Fatalities aren't
that common either. I have been hit by both powered
and non powered and both hurt like hell. The
non-powered was a Zagi and it knocked me completely
over and the wind out of me, this was a drilling right
to the chest. I was fortunate. In Vegas many years
ago a young boy lost his life chasing his dads plane
and another plane went into his chest. I heard that
they figured a .60 size plane cruising at a moderate
speed weighing about 8lbs has nearly 50,000lbs sq. in.
at the time of impact. I don't know where they got
the data but that is scarey for sure. Just be careful
out there.

Re: [RCSE] Goose Formation (long--see end for soaring connection)

2001-12-28 Thread GRW

Pat,

I know the answer to this, it's because there are more
birds on the one side than the other.

A few weeks ago I was fly electrics with a Master
Falconer and he asked if I knew why the V was longer
on one side than the other. I thought he was being
serious then he blasted me with that answer. I asked
him if he could tell the difference between two birds.

Re: [RCSE] LSF competition requirements

2001-08-13 Thread GRW

Rick,

I just made level 2 last week and I too was confused on the LSF
requirements and wrote Dennis Adamisin here is what he had for me. I
gather six is the bare minimum but you can continue until you reach your
score or win a contest. I don't have the sheet with me so can't
remember all the rules. Hope this helps, but he is fast to reply I
would suggest writing Dennis as well.

Glenn,

Part d is the final answer to the equation; your (participant's)
competition points

(Your score/Winning Score) x 100 x (# of entrants - your standing + 1) =

Participant's (your) competition points.

Your example: (4400/5500) x 100 x (6+1) = 560 LSF points (Participant's
Competition Points)

Scoring matrix does not matter for HLG versus TD. Ultimately your score
is
a percentage of the winners score, whether the totals are in the 500's
or
5's has no impact. The biggest factor is the number of contestants
and
of course, your placing. For example, if you fly a big contest like the

NATs with 100 entries, first place earns 10,000 points regardless of his

actual score. Assume 51st place had 50% of winners score, normally that

would not sound like much of a flight score, but that would earn 2500
points - almost all of a Level 2 requirement. That's why I made sure to

record my NATs scores because even though I flew placed poorly, I got
a
lot of points just because of the entry totals.

Just make sure you get a minimum of six contests with at least 5 entries

each for Level 2.

Does this help?

 Dennis,

You are absolutely right it's called RTFS (computer
term I use for my users but applies here) - read the
fricken (sub if you like) sheet. Sorry about that. I
assumed that was the amount of contests. Now, I know
that different contests seem to have a different
scoring matrix, my handlaunch stuff i'm usually
scoring about 4-5k but I don't think that matters but
i'll ask anyway. Lets say there are 8 contests I
outscore 6 of them get a 4400 and the winner gets 5500
 it should look like this correct? 4400 / 550 x 100 x
 (6+1) = 560 but where does part D Particpants
Competition Points come into play? I assume that I
can do either a placement or a competition points or
is it once you start one way you have to finish that
way. Sorry for the probably obvious solutions here
just want to make sure I undersand since i've got 2
possibly 3 contests left before the end of the year
and I want to get it right. Thanks again for your
 time in explaining this.

[RCSE] LSF Questions

2000-04-10 Thread GRW

I have some questions that maybe some of you that have already gone
through it could answer. 1) On level one do you have to do all 5
landings consectively? 2) Can I do all the tasks in one day? It only
states you can't do 2 thermals in one day. 3) If i'm working on Level
II do you have to complete all six contests if you place at a contest?
I think i'm misreading that and wanted to verify. Also, it states that
it has to be a contest that is LSF recognized by the size, rounds, and
events. Under events it states the thermal Event guidelines, is HLG
considered under the thermal events? I'm sure I am just reading some
if it wrong but wanted to clarify. Thank in advance for any help on
this.

My next question is has anyone used or have heard how well the FMA Versa

I have seen posts out here about the small nicad's, Radio Shack sells a 9v Transistor
battery that is a Metal Hydride battery that
you can cut open and make 4cell packs, I hear it's about 100MaH and wieghs about .8oz.
Now I went one step further and bought two
cordless phone packs and made a pack that is .9oz and rates at 270MaH and is very
small. I'm using it in a mhl that I'm about
finished with. This was not a cheap pack, just trying it was $24.00 but they are 2/3
AAA. Yost doesn't show that they carry these
sizes but if someone finds them elsewhere please let me know. Thanks.

The thin 120mah batteries are actually less weight than the 110s.
The best way to get the 120's is to take apart one of the 9v batteries
 that uses the sanyo cells.

Yes, I have those, but they're too long for my HLG.
BTW, at a realistic 125mA load, I consistently get 90-95 mAh
out of them, not the rated 120 mAh.

 Check out Cermark or Yost.

I called Yost about 5 days ago for 1/2N cells...

stalled. Now in the second flight I made sure I kept my airspeed up and
I couldn't pull out and miss the pole I tagged, broke the fuse in the
back, no biggie easily repaired. Any ideas or does this sound like a
stalling problem? I am thinking I"m going to have to get a newer
