Hey Ron

I looked for Brian Buaas on Sunday and couldn't find him. I was told he
was there on Saturday and was not there on Sunday. How does he end up
with 2 days worth of scores? Did someone else turn in scores on his Card?

Next in task 7 sunday morning, How many points do you get if you get
through to 1:45 and the winner of your heat gets to 2:00?

BTW, worth noting that Photon II wins Old Guy for the 4th time in five
years. Notable Free Flighter Martyn Cowley has taken up Hand Launch in
his dottage and scored big time.

[RCSE] most fun plane

2004-11-29 Thread Jerry Krainock
Interesting that most of the Most Fun Planes have flown on the slope.
You have to have been around for awhile and live in SoCal to remember
the Rubber Ducky. It was a 60 span sloper, rudder elevator, that
thermaled like a champ and was just made for fun. It used the 2r112
profile and became the basis for my second WR X/C airplane. It would
fly in popcorn farts, do all of the R/E pattern maneuvers, perform great
increasing amplitude hammerheads, ah ya hadda be there. How
could it have been so long ago.

[RCSE] Photon II new version DLG

2004-10-07 Thread Jerry Krainock
Gentlemen
A great free Flighter, Martyn Cowley, convinced me to do something with
the Photon II that has turned out pretty well. First, he convinced me to
offer an unflapped version of the P II specifically for the FF community
and for those of you who simply want to enjoy a great DLG without the
complexity and expense of flaps. I flew the first of these models about
2 weeks ago and it is still delightful to fly. It will glide ever so
slowly into you hand for catching. Now, a simple 3-channel radio and you
can fly almost anywhere, anytime, with the same performance that JW flew
to third at the Nats. The Photon is a Fun Toy as he (JW) remarked at
Visalia. Price for the unflapped version is $ 325.00 plus shipping.
Since the Thanksgiving list is filled up, Christmas is the next time for
Delivery (I hope, you never know with my guys).

BTW, when I made the Poway flyoff in 01, I flew unflapped models. I did
get the Transmitter modified though. I had a 2k trim pot added in
parallel with the rudder stick pot, with a double pull, double throw,
momentary interrupt switch. I dialed in the amount of rudder trim I
wanted and when the switch is depressed, the rudder goes to a pre-set
position. My throwing style was such that I didnt use elevator pre-set.
Worked great.

Secondly, The introductory price for the Charm will last until the First
of November. After that, the price will be $ 575.00 for this excellent
RES model. Get your orders in before the first of November for the $
525.00 Price.

[RCSE] Photon Shameless Plug

2004-07-09 Thread Jerry Krainock
Gentlemen
I have delivery positions open in the July/August shipment of Photon
IIs. I will be raising prices slightly for models ordered after this
delivery. These models are high performance DLG gliders for sport flying
and Competition. The quality of construction has to be seen to be
believed and the performance and handling are to the same standard as
the construction.
A couple of quick comments about performance. There have been some
statements about the Photon and other poly models ability to penetrate
in windy conditions. Here in SoCal last summer, Larry Pettyjohn had a
very convincing win in SC2 Hand launch competition in a windy comp. held
in Long Beach. The contest didnt start until after 1:00 PM and featured
12 to 15 MPH winds. Typical summertime on shore flow for Long Beach.
Larry flew a Photon I at 350 gram and ignored the wind, had 30 gm of
ballast on board. Flyers in the field who have made the flyoff at Poway
included L. Jolly, B. Watson, J Erickson, C. Greening and me. Not a bad
field. The Photon II has less fuselage wetted surface area and a cleaner
wing mount + a camber changing flap. It is a fine penetrating glider.
And of course, there is always ballast.
Secondly, much has been made about the inability of Poly models to
launch as high as Aileron Models. Actually, this is apparently the case,
as a poly model presents the side area of the upturned wing tips as well
as the Fuse and vertical stabilizer to the airstream during the yaw
excursions. However, Watson, Erickson and Pettyjohn are all capable of
launching to 140 feet or better, which is about 25 lower than the
highest launchers in the country. The Photon II is extremely easy to
fly, especially at 10 when you are making a save, not a bad tradeoff.
Flying the Photon, Jonnie E has a couple of wins over Wurtz and and an
SC2 seasonal championship. Not too Shabby.

[RCSE] People are talking

2004-01-28 Thread Jerry Krainock
Here is what people are saying about the Photon II

Arthur in NJ:
The model is fantastic, the workmanship is beautiful.

Greg in San Francisco:
Once again I have to say that I'm really impressed with the quality of
the Photon II. It is the 7th dlg I've owned and it is definitely the
cream of the crop so far in terms of engineering and construction. I've
no doubt it will fly great as well considering the light weight and Mark
Drela airfoil.

John in Santa Clarita:
This is a beautiful plane up close. The wing mount, the pod, even the
hatch
cover are immaculately produced. I'd had it assembled for a bit before
I
flew it and I wasn't sure it would be able to take a full launch as the
wing
mount only is from the leading edge back to the spar. It can take it!

Interesting Day in Simi Valley today watching John Erickson launching
his new P II higher than his Encore.

Just a few Photon’s left in the Feb. shipment.

[RCSE] David Peltz Passes

2003-11-07 Thread Jerry Krainock
David Peltz, former SFVSF’r and AMA District VP has passed away on
Tuesday, November 4, 2003.

David was very active in the Soaring Community from the early 70’s to
the late 80’s. David flew in many Local, Regional and National meets
and was usually toward the top of the results. An LSF Level IV, David
set a National Record for Sailplane Altitude in the Early 80’s.

His signature was a Transparent Blue and Transparent Orange color scheme
over excellent craftsmanship. David and Sam Brown created the first
computerized scoring system for a major soaring competition in the US
when they scored the Two Meter World Cup in 1981. In 1974, David
entered this countries first X/C sailplane competition, partnered with
Rick Pearson, flying a Mother Goose.

David served as a Club Officer, Contest Director and generously donated
his time as scorekeeper for the 1981 F3B World Championships as well as
other major contests. He is solely responsible for the AMA recognizing
National Records for model sailplanes.

In His professional life, Dave was in at the beginning of the Computer
Graphics revolution that effects virtually all of us. He was active in
the business and wrote a column for one of the Mac Magazines in the late
80’s, In the 90’s, Dave shifted Carrier paths and became, at first, a
Computer Consultant for the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department and
subsequently, a reserve Sargent in the Sheriffs Department.

David was a voluminous writer with a great wit and an incisive mind. If
you opposed him on an issue, woes betide you. If he was your friend, he
was as loyal as it gets, your best advocate, generous with time and
money, and relentless. He can never be replaced and will be greatly
missed.

David is survived by his son Adam and his daughter Stephanie.

[RCSE] Trick RX's are on their way....Shortly.

2003-10-29 Thread Jerry Krainock
There is new radio technology on the way and it's not gonna be cheap.

I have seen a 16 channel programable system that contains a downlink
back to your transmitter. In addition, the TX frequency shifts about 60
times per second to elimninate spurius signals. The prototypes are
operating on a much higher frequency and a portion of the money needed
to start production has been raised.

Time will tell if this system becomes available.

[RCSE] 3-legged Dog: Was Re: models at IHLGF

2003-06-16 Thread Jerry Krainock
I flew Watson A/s model today for about 10 minutes. I flew it for about
5 minutes Thursday before Poway. Bill and I set up our models
completely differently on the Trans. side. We use the same CG's
usually. Bill uses Exponental on Rudder and Elevator. I don't like
this. That said, we had pretty good lift at Pierce today.

Matt Gewain Noted that the A/s model goes up without rolling one way or
the other. Bill says he uses about 8 Clicks more rudder trim on the A/s
than on his other symetric models. After a while I removed 5 clicks and
that seemed to remove the heavy left wing condition and the model still
launches straight. The model weighs 10 oz. +- and the wing is offset to
the left about 5 +-. The wing area is ballanced side to side. The MAC
is the same on both sides.

It seems to climb really well in smooth thermals when you turn into the
long wing. In Roudy thermals you turn into the short wing. Basically,
it climbs really well turning either direction; it does circle tighter
into the short wing as you would expect. Bill considers this to be a
light lift calm air model. He used the AG-16 profile. The one thing
that seems to have suffered is L/D at high speed. This is not a model
where you would want to start home from low down wind.

For me, the visual ques you see when you are turning look wrong both
directions. In Pitch, I kept thinking I was going to tip stall both
directions but it didn't. I attribute this to Exponential. During high
speed runs and dives I kept thinking the model would roll into the short
wing, but it did not. I got it going straight down in a dive and there
was no roll either direction.

On Sat. before the contest started at Poway, Bill detirmined his still
air time was 21 sec greater with the A/s wing than with his other
models. If you consider a sink rate of 1.1 to 1.2 feet per second, than
an addidional of 23 to 25 feet is needed. Watching bill throw a
conventional model over our 60 (Measured) Euclyptus tree this morning,
it is easy to see the additional altitude when he throws the A/s model.

What would work for me with this model would be to have a seperate model
setup on Bills transmitter so the setup suits me. The model flys
beautifully although it is disconcerting to look at. I would kill for
the extra 25' on launch. I can sure see this concept being developed
into a Killer Aleron model, and launching even higher.

[RCSE] Pierce Arrow Paragon kits...?

2003-04-01 Thread Jerry Krainock
The origional Paragon Kits were produced by Gene Walloch who was a
production Engineer for Mac/Dac and a master craftsman. Walloch had
tooling for all of the curved parts which were sanded to shape. As an
old freeflighter, Gene's wood selection was superb. If any of the
spruce in the old kits is warped, replace it with new wood.

The Paragon was indeed designed for night flying and was very sucessful
in the light and the dark. I redall that the First contest the Paragon
ws entered in was at Night fly in Canoga Park in 76 or 77. I think Bill
Watson and i both flew the same plane and took first and second. Not a
bad beginning and still the Floater by which all others are measured.

Slobod is still alive and kicking. He is currently prepairing for the
Bent Wing 2 day at Visalia.

[RCSE] LSF 8 hours? Anyone flown longer?

2003-03-03 Thread Jerry Krainock
I've timed several 8 hr LSF slope flights and 1 flight over 8 hours that
was Thermals. Gary Itner did it about 20 years ago with his 16', 3 ch.
XC sailplane. There have been longer slope flights but no one has done
more than 8 hours in thermals in this country with the possible
exception of Wurtz on his WR X/C flight.

Long TD flights are no fun after a couple of hours. And they are
certainly not easy.

[RCSE] Season's End

2002-11-19 Thread Jerry Krainock
Season’s End

Southern California Soaring Club’s (SC2) has been running a Series of HL
competitions now for the Last 2 years. This year we had 8 scheduled
comps in 7 different locations, plus IHL Festival at Poway. Those of us
in the DLG Mafia also had 5 or 6 scheduled practices.

We had our last comp on Sat. Nov 9 in interesting conditions at
Paramount Ranch. The first 2 rounds were dry and the last 3 were flown
in intermittent drizzle. Winds were calm. There was light lift all
day.

Nowel Siegal was first in Open class over John Erickson and Bill
Watson. Our only entry in Sportsman, Greg Cueva had the top score and
won overall.

Just a couple of observations here:
First, our Sportsmen/Open division has worked pretty well for the last
two years. Larry Pettyjohn won Sportsmen overall last year and won for
the first time in the open class in April of this year. Greg Cueva
soloed in July of 2001, flew his first HL competition in the fall, flew
all year this year as a Sportsmen, and had high score overall, winning
the last contest of the season against a good field. Greg was a
Dominant winner in the Overall Sportsman Class this year.
Second: Polyhedral models won 7 of 8 contests. Flapped poly models won 6
of 8 contests. Aileron models were flown by many of the entrants,
including Wurtz and Greening. John Erickson had a rather easy win over
Wurtz in May at Poway and Wurtz returned the favor at Santa Clarita in
October. In the last 3 SC2 HL comps Wurtz has entered, he is 1 for 3.
Greening also flew at Santa Clarita and aside from Monster launches, he
had a bad contest.

For the year, John Erickson flew to a well-deserved overall victory,
which included his win over Wurtz. For the second year, Bill Watson was
a close Second. After a 10 year layoff, Mike Bame came out of
retirement to take Third place for the season in the last heat, of the
last round, of the last contest of the year.

Conclusions:
First, Having a Sportsmen class gives a place for newcomers to start in
HL and compete with other flyers at there own skill level. It is also a
place for old re-treads to get back into competition and re-develop
their competition skills as well as learn the event. If you are
fortunate enough to find a fine young competitor like Greg Cueva, take
the time to nurture and teach him.
Second, notwithstanding other opinions expressed on this forum, the
facts show Flapped Poly models are fully competitive in all of the HL
tasks I have ever seen. There are 4 or 5 excellent designs available and
all have weak and strong points. Pick the model that best suits your
style.

I have been told that there is a lot of interest in my Photon Design
which is currently out of production. If you would like to buy a Photon
if they were available, E-mail me and let me know. If there is enough
interest, I will look around for another vendor.

[RCSE] Aero Model Hilite HLG

2002-02-20 Thread Jerry Krainock

For the record. Mr. B Yen is incorrect in his comments re the Photon.
The Photon is currently $ 400 for a complete airframe, and $ 300 for an
unfinished model. The wing is built in the old eastern block and is hi
tech composite, similar to a Simply the Best or Graphite. I build the
rest of the model. hopefully, I will have Pods, and tail groups within
the next 2 months and at then point, I will offer ARF's at a reduced
price. A limited number of Covered flapped wings are are currently
available for $ 180. Covered unflapped wings are $ 165.

[RCSE] Stolen DLG

2002-02-14 Thread Jerry Krainock

Attention West Coast HL flyers!

The DLG shown in the photo in the upper left hand corner of my Web Page
has been stolen. A Futaba 6 XA transmitter was taken at the same time.
The wing is covered in Ora Cover with white main panels and red tips.
The model has a Photon name on the upper left wing in blue letters
outlined in red. My AMA number (45111) is on the upper right wing in
matching color numbers. The stab mount is unique in that it fits over
the boom and appears to be 2 posts sticking up from the boom: the stab
is bolted on with 4-40 nylon bolts. This is the first model in the
country with this stab mount as I just imported the mount 2 weeks ago.

If this model shows up at your field, grap it and notify the authorities
and me. A $100 reward will be paid for recovery of the model.

[RCSE] Tail Booms

2001-06-30 Thread Jerry Krainock

I have tried to include the spread sheet I did on tail booms with this
message, but I don't know if it is going to work. Maybe Chris Adams can
forward it.
I also use the G Force SUL boom on my models. I think Brian Buass is
using the G Force Std for his. The Highest stiffness per weight for HL
usage is the SUL but only by about 1 GM in weight. The Andrukov
Al/Carbon/Al booms are, to all intents, rigid. You have to run the
pushrods externally so as not to put a hole in the boom where it may
break. I would use Andrukov's if I could afford them. The more rigid
the boom, the less the need for a gyro, assuming you have sized the
Vertical Stabilizer correctly.
