[RCSE] First sailplane

Gentle Lady...many long flights then converted to electric power pod on top
like the Sophisticated Lady w/ variable pitch/feathering prop. Then ditched
the power and flattened the wing, added flaps and ailerons and flew it at the
Cinci Pumpkin Fly. What a dog and how embarrassing, but hey, I had fun! I
even added winglets to fly in Standard Class, (remember that) and it's still
a hangar queen! Well maybe a hangar tramp but nostalgic none the less!

need a whole lot more help. Maybe there is a spot I can post these
pictures, since I don't seem to have enought personal web space to do as
such. I have tried using some freeware programs like Picaso, but with no
luck. I really would like to share these with the group, (Pumpkin Fly

this out. Any suggestions?

I have a Genie LT/S that I can't wait to get in the air to see how it does.
Unfortunately I haven't had time to get it set up and trimmed but I will make

 Joe,
thanks for sharing your setup tricks. I notice you always use more ail-rud

 over-banking tendency?
I always disable ail-rud coupling in thermal mode for that specific
reason. When circling, I use the left stick to give a little in rudder
and, of course, the right stick to give a little out ailerons. If you
enable high ratio of ail-rud mix during circling, any outside aileron
input will screw up your circle. I use ail-rud coupling in cruise mode,
but as soon as I start circling I turn it off.

 Regards,
 Oleg.

I may be incorrect but I thought a properly set up and aerodynamically stable
plane shouldn't require outside aileron. As soon as you neutralize the
ailerons, shouldn't the plane maintain it's bank angle?
Maybe in a perfect setup but I know a lot of my ships I have had to manually
fly this way, too. I always assumed it was due to poor setup (differential,
throw volume, rigging, etc) or design.

[RCSE] Genie LT/S

Just looking over my new Genie and trying to decide what type of battery pack
to use in this fuse, along with a couple of other items to get her airworthy
for the spring. I wanted to mention to the list how incredible it is to have
a custom built sailplane like the Genie built to exacting standards by the
creator of the design. I am truly impressed with the Genie design and Harley
has done a great job assembling what appears to be a great TD contesting
ship. I can't wait to set up the winch and wring it out to see what I've got!
By following Harley's step by step processes, you, too, can have one of these
great looking ships for a lot less than the cost of the typical moldy.
(Except for the investment of time required!) I have been working on the Big
Genie version and in the time it has taken me to build up the fuse, fin and
stabs, Harley completely built, bagged, painted and installed gear in a Genie
LT/S. Thanks for the efforts, Harley. I hope I can do this ship proud!

P.S. Nope, I'm not being paid for this endorsement but rather I compensated
Harley for his efforts. Although he has stated he is not in the production
business, I feel honored to have one of his creations. I highly recommend his

Hi Darwin,
Good to hear from you! My interest when I started this thread was whether or
not AMA was drawing much benefit from this or if another entity found a way
to capitalize on the AMA, obviously with AMA's approval. I am just curious to
see how much AMA will gain from this method of marketing, that's all.

Regarding the AMA, this is apparently designed to be of benefit to the
organization, clubs and individuals. (haven't seen it yet) AMA is working
hard behind the scenes to secure and maintain flying sites, lobby against
strange legislation (emission for gas engines) and the on going frequency
 monitoring with the FCC.

AMA is well worth the membership fee for these benefits. Dave Brown's concept
he explained in the last issue of MA about membership based on participation
and discipline of the hobby is an interesting concept to generate revenue.
(Thread hijack in progress :))

I don't think $9 is too much to ask when we are flying $1000 plus models.
Forget the philisophical BS that, I didn't ask for it. The AMA is still
very cheap for the benefits we get compared to other organization for other
 hobbies and sports.

The first DVD is $9 but how much are subsequent DVD's? I imagine they will be
a bit more expensive. From one RV aficionado to another, you're right, $9
bucks isn't much but the last thing I need is more distractions from pounding
rivets or cutting foam! :)

Let's support AMA instead of bitch about them.

After a couple of folded wings, I rebuilt her with a Goldberg electric

[RCSE] Re: Wing Tape (update- shipping is CONUS)

2002-07-06 Thread Jim Carlton

Fellow glider guiders,

I now have in stock wing mounting tape, used for plug in wings, which works
much better than the last batch I had for sale. This new tape is the
old formula which I had previously used for about the past 10 years. What
I sold last year was the same formula as the original but from a different
manufacturer, which resulted in a tape that left a considerable amount of
residue after continuous use. I was assured by the supplier it was
manufactured to the same specs, but after some true field testing,
especially in warmer climates, the tape didn't measure up to the previous
version. Sure, it stuck well, but it left too much residue.

So, here's the deal.

Anyone who purchased this tape from me in the past year, who is not
satisfied with the tape's performance, you can return it to me and I will
exchange it for the original formula. This applies to the clear or
semi-transparent tape only, not white. (The original, good formula has
Made in the USA printed inside the paper roll.) Any unused rolls, I can
return to the supplier for full credit (exchange). Any partial rolls, of at
least a half a roll or more, I will give you a $2.00 credit per roll. Plus
shipping.

Keep in mind I have done this as a service for friends in the past and I am
not out to make big bucks selling tape. All I want to do is recoup my costs
for the product, packing and shipping (and maybe a free roll of tape for
myself!)

For those who want to order more tape, here are the details:

1 x 36 yds of clear (semi-transparent) or white vinyl wing tape @ $4.50 ea.

1 1/2 x 6 yds of white vinyl @ $1.00 ea. (This tape works well on the plug
in outer panels of my molded Xantipa.)

Shipping is $3.95 for up to 4 large and 2 small rolls. I will quote
shipping on larger quantity orders. (CONUS)

Let me know if there are any questions or if there are any other tape
needs you may have. My supplier has a fairly large selection of specialty
tapes and I may be able to find what you're looking for.

Thanks!

I have found a supplier that is much less expensive than the graphic arts

from in the past. It is a supplier for marching bands, McCormick's

foot x 1 inch roll of thin holographic tape for $8.10,(accent tape). Not as
durable as the thick stuff but very flexible and sticks down real well. They
also have a thicker product, 25 feet x 1 inch(mirror tape) in all colors for
$2.05, and laser for $4.05(which I have not tried yet). Other tapes and
mylar streamers are also available there. Shipping costs are reasonable and
service is prompt.

I have also found an inexpensive solution if the tape isn't available
local. Try the closest party store or check in the gift wrap section at
WalMart / KMart. Look for holographic tissue paper. It comes in sheets
about 12 x 24 and can be cut in strips and applied with 3M 77 or double
stick mounting tape. Don't go too heavy on the spray adhesive though, it
can crinkle up the tissue a bit, but it works well. I believe I got 2
large sheets for about $1.99.

[RCSE] Re: electric power for sailplanes

2002-01-20 Thread Jim Carlton

A friend has the following for sale which may be suitable for sailplanes.
Contact him for more info.

The reason I called was to say that I am selling the Aveox motors that I
have with controllers.
I have the following :
1409/2Y $200 with controller
1412/3Y with gearbox $250 with controller
F12LMR with gearbox $250 with controller
Controllers are L260 BEC
I have never run these. Motors were gone over by Aveox. Controllers are new.
If you know anyone interested let me know.

Re: [RCSE] NATS changes

For what it is worth. The current format is good, but not the best. It is
great for a lot of people, and it is bad for a lot. yes the people attend
every year, but like Darryl said, change should not be a bad thing.

True. (Bear with me here.)

The origional concept was brought up because the FAI events in all of RC are
suffering. Using soaring as an example, look at the schedule. We have 2
days for FAI events, and both really need 2 days to have a real contest.
All other RC events are having the same problem. While yes, the popularity
of the FAI events may never increase, they also are the pinnacle and
international recognition events. Darryl and Joe are not respected world
wide because of their Visalia performances, nor even Joe's multiple IHLGF
wins, but because of their combined awesome performances in the FAI tasks
(F3b and F3j). Many of the top and well respected glider pilots are known
for their FAI performances, and hopefully many more.

True, the world is bigger than just the good ol' USA.

The simple thing is that the FAI community in the US is slipping. There are
fewer and fewer contests, and fewer and fewer possibilities for new pilots
to enter them. This is concerning many of the executive and competition
folks on the AMA. It should be a concern for everyone.

Was there ever the kind of participation you infer, here in the US? In my
18 some years of following soaring, I don't recall ever seeing a strong
(read large) FAI presence in soaring. Teams seem to be made up of the best
pilots who demonstrated their skills in our current events. The pilots made
the team through hard work and practice for each FAI discipline and then
placing well in the team trials. Not everyone has the time, money, skills,
resources and desire to fly FAI events.

The simple thing is
that the AMA would like to develop a way to increase that participation in
some way, and a suggestion was to have a revolving FAI/non-FAI NATs
schedule. For good or bad, this is a possibility and one that should be
investigated. The other thing is that in many cases, soaring specifically,
there are only a very limited amount of FAI events in the country. For F3b
that is the Team selections (every other year), the NATS (one day), and 2-3
other events scattered around the ocuntry (Chicago, Az or NM, and Denver
last year). F3j is similar with the TS, NATS and 1-2 other events if that.
How many unlimited contests are there? How about 2m? RES? NOS? All
vastly exceed that possibility. The NATS is one of the FEW places to have
an FAI event that has the potential of pulling a national crowd, yet having
it on only 2 dats (1 F3b, and 1 F3j) will never attract a large
crowd...ever.

Participating in F3J and spectating F3B leads me to believe the difficulty
of running these type of contests are far more demanding than setting up a
winch, tossing out a landing tape and having a typical TD contest (or, for
us Midwesterners, a couple of winches and flying MoM.).

The simple thing, and please don't misread this, is that the NATS is simply
a contest. It really is not a national championship in the terms that
most sports or competitions use. It really is a fun and enjoyable week of
RC soaring (and other RC events) that people come and participate in yearly.
And don't get me wrong, winning this is a GREAT accomplishment, it deserves
all the prestige and honor that goes with it. But there are plenty of
possibilities to have Unlimited, RES, 2M, HL, and NOS contests. Many people
on the ESL do it EVERY weekend! But there are not many chances to have good
FAI contests and by restricting them to 1 day per event, you keep that from
ever happening.

Points are well taken but, how do we incorporate more flying into an
established week of NATS contests? As I posted earlier, maybe it's the time
for those who FAI is important to, and if that means AMA also, then step up
to the plate and organize the events for what you desire. Again, maybe it's
time to clarify what is the NATS' mission and objective.

Yeah, baby! I'm working on that now for HL at the NATS. With todays
computer power I think it can be achieved in realistic fashion. We may only
get 5-6 rounds instead of 7-8 and we may need to limit freqs or ask
competitors to have 2 freqs available, but I think it would be well worth it.
How about a fly off round or three for the top ten, a la the IHLGF?

Hi David,

I sell 1 X 36 yds of clear and white pressure sensitive tape that works
well. I have been using this tape for about 10 years and have had good
results. The clear is a slightly yellowish, not crystal clear, but works
well and leaves just a mild residue after many repeated uses that can be
removed easily with citrus or goo gone remover. The white is popular for
scale and all white planes. I also have some 1 1/4 X 6yd rolls available
which works well for scale and larger size planes. This is a thinner tape
and holds well due to the increased width. Not as tacky as the clear or
white 1.
Pricing is $4.00 per roll for either clear or white 1 and $1.00 per roll
for the 1 1/4 white. Shipping is $2.00 for 1 or 2 rolls of 1 and better
rates for shipping for larger quantities.

[RCSE] Chandelle

2000-11-24 Thread Jim Carlton

Anyone remember this sailplane (Chandelle) from some time back? I recall
the plans and construction article in M.A.N. in the late 70's or early
80's, although they have no such plans available. It was, if I recall, a 2
meter, aileron,V-tail all built up construction. It was one of the first
sailplanes that caught my eye and got me hooked into this lifestyle. I
saved the article but between 5 moves, 3 kids and the like, I wonder why I
can't find it?

[RCSE] IHLGF 2000 Video

2000-08-21 Thread Jim Carlton

Just got my copy of the video produced by Paul Naton and filmed by Dave
Reese for Radio Carbon Art at this year's IHLGF.
I had to get on the exchange and make note of how great a job they have
done with their latest production. There is excellent footage and
interesting audio from all the top pilots (and even some not-so-top and WAY
outta shape pilots! How I got in there, I don't know, but thanks a bunch
Paul and Dave, my kids loved it!)
Great video of the best launch techniques from conventional overhand to
discus and sidearm. Interesting commentary by the world's best pilots as
they fly the tasks. Cool intro and summary video work. Slick music score, too.
I believe they captured true the flavor of the best HL event I have
attended. "Two thumbs up!"
Check it out at www.radiocarbonart.com

Re:[RCSE] Buckeye Soaring HL Toss

2000-03-29 Thread Jim Carlton

For those of the Handlaunch persuasion:

Buckeye Soaring Society of Ohio is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Hand
Launch Toss.

Location is the Cleveland Metroparks, Rocky River Reservation, Tyler Field
on Valley Parkway near Cleveland's west side.

This is an AMA sanctioned event scheduled for Saturday, May
13th. Registration at 9:00AM with pilot's meeting at 9:30.

Entry fee is $10.00
Awards for 1st thru 3rd place in Open and 1st in Junior.

Rounds and tasks to be determined as per number of entrants with a minimum
of 3 rounds to be flown. Field is available until 5:00PM so we will fly as
many rounds as possible with open winch and high start available at the
conclusion of the event.

This location can be very challenging due to it's location in the valley of
the Metroparks and it proves to be a real test of air reading abilities and
flying skills. Got retriever poles? Bring'em, you might need
'em! Refreshments will be provided but pack a lunch!

The event is being held at a public park with spectators and probable local
media coverage...come on out and let's "Toss" a few!
Hope to see you there!
