Re: [RCSE] (No subject header)

2008-08-15 Thread Mark Miller
In a FLS each field coil is in series with a brush set. The power goes through
the field coil and into the positive brush, through the armature and then is
grounded on the negative brush which is 90 degrees to the positive brush. If
you disconnect the brushes from the field coil and have a switch to reverse
polarity of each brush set it will reverse the motor. It is a lot of work but
it is doable. It would also require the switch to carry the full current of the
motor. Maybe you could use a switch to control a DPDT relay that can handle the
current it takes to run the motor.

Actually if you turn it way off it will turn in the other direction.
This is how the ESL winches worked on Goughner frames before Mike Wade
modified our frames.

Re: [RCSE] (No subject header)

2008-08-15 Thread Mark Miller
It would look like you would need to use the switch to reverse the polarity of
the brushes in the two switch positions. A little surgery will be needed but it
is doable. Timing may be an issue but you should only see reduced torque in the
nonstock polarity.

Several years back I saw that someone knew how to reverse the direction of the
Ford Long Shaft motor. I want to run one forward and reverse from two
pushbutton switches. 1) How do I reverse it? 2) How do I wire it so I
can go forward and reverse? In case you think reversing the polarity at the
battery will reverse a FLS motor, it won't. It will blow the diode in the
newer type solenoid though. Done that. Thanks for any info. Rick

Re: [RCSE] An argument for handlaunch.

2008-07-30 Thread Mark Miller
Mike,

The Sidewinder is close but I think $300 for the kit may still be a bit much
for the young folks when you consider the all up cost will be about $425 if you
build it yourself.

Louisville's little Lee has progressed very nicely flying a bunch of woodies
early on and getting the most out of them. If there was a similar kind of plane
for handlaunch it may bring the really young crowd in earlier. I doubt Lee
could have gone for a Sidewinder a year or so ago. The issue to me is that the
first step in handlaunch has a tall cost of entry.

My son Brendan who is 21 now bought a used XP-4 from Jeff Carr last year. It
just about tapped out his life savings even though it was a fair price for a
used XP-4. He had a tip strike a few months ago and delaminated the skin. It is
fixable but time is short right now.

The Gambler is more like what I was thinking. It has decent performance and is
cheap to get flying. Now if only there were contests based on this kind of
plane. Just think of the new talent it could attract and when they get to the
point of going for a big bagged plane they will have all the skills they
learned in the more beginner class.

Hey Mark,

Does the Sidewinder from Polecata fill the bill, or is that still a little
beyond what you were thinking for target price? Just curious.

I also agree with Ben in that Handlaunch is breathing new life into soaring. We
have seen it here in St. Louis. While there may not be many new members
produced from it yet it sure has rekindled excitement from many of the current
members. I, like Chris, go back to the beginnings of HLG. I built a Sunbird
when Dave's article came out and have been with it ever since. I designed some
old style HLG javelin type models and loved them. I have not participated much
since DLG came about mostly because I had other things I wanted to do but I'm
restarting again. I like the amount you get to fly, the simplicity of it all
and the contest format makes you think more than I have to in TD. "Do I launch
again and risk that 2 minute flight or do I walk away and see where the chips
fall?" for example.

What I would like to see, and I do not know how realistic it is, would be a
beginners class of handlaunch. Something where you do not need a $600 DLG
machine or a $400 used beater where you spend more time chasing wing de
laminations than flying. Something where you can learn flying and thermaling
skills and move your way into the big leagues. I do not know if it is wood
built ups on a mini high start or not. While that format is fun it is really
just all up, last down over and over. Maybe a 1 meter DLG class? I'm not bright
enough to figure it all out but I feel there needs to be something.

"Ben,

Jeff and Bret are just as insulted."

I went to the NATS last year. Came in 33rd. in Unlimited. No one mentioned my
name as attending. Should I be insulted? I'm not, as I do not need the pat on
the back from my fellow man to be happy. I am plenty happy in my own mind with
33rd. Usually I am down about 100 more places.

Bravo to everyone who took the time, effort and expense to attend in the German

Last weekend I ordered a receiver from the Horizon website, but my fat fingers
clicked on the wrong item (top pins vs end pins). I realized this on Sunday
when it was too late to do anything about it. Monday morning I called them, and
I got really good service. It took the efforts of several folks to track down
my erroneous order (which, like Elvis, was just about to leave the building)
and get the right stuff in my package. I talked to three representatives, all
of whom were very helpful. About an hour later I got a call saying they had
straightened everything out and all was well. The next day I got my package
with the right goodies. Thanks, Horizon.

I would expect the spektrum limit and what happens when the "channels" are
occupied was addressed to the AMA's satisfaction. Perhaps asking Steve Kaluf

[RCSE] Re: line tension governor

2007-12-24 Thread Mark Miller
I'd like to wait and see what the real fall out is going to be. So far what I
see is a lot of folks discussing doomsday without any real proof. It makes no
sense to me to change all of the launch systems we have in the USA when none of
these big planes (Icon 2, DP's new TD) are in existence yet. I can see being
prepared and all but this is a major undertaking. Plus why invest in these
fixes before any of these Uber planes are in existence to use as examples or
proof of concept? So far we have a few proposed solutions looking for a
problem.

What's the deal? 2 American designed Uber planes are on the horizon and folks
are all quaking in their boots. Will the extra pull of these planes on the
winch when added to the pull of gravity of the moon cause sea levels to rise
and all of our ocean front homes will fall into the sea?

It seems folks do not want to invest in winch technology to launch these Uber
planes to their potential for fear they will put the dinky planes they already
have at a disadvantage. They will rather invest in limiting the winches so that
the big planes will not get the advantage on launch and folks can keep flying
the dinky planes they have. That is until they see the efficiencies in flight
of the big planes then everyone will join the bandwagon. Then they will all
complain about weak winches. Round and round it goes. In the end no matter
which way you go the good fliers will make it work.

In 30 years one of us will be in the same discussion and we will be able to
keep Chuck's memory alive by saying "I did that 30 years ago and it didn't
work".

Re: [RCSE] Benchmark models

2007-12-01 Thread Mark Miller
I paid $150.00 for my first Hobie back in 1980. I thought I was crazy seeing
that kits were under $50.00 at the most. Looking back it was the best $150.00 I
ever spent in this hobby. I still have it. It taught me a lot and was so easily
repairable that I could be back in the air quickly. I caught my first thermal
with it. It has it's faults but I see it as a personality. Kind of like that
girl you didn't really want to being home to mom but did anyway. Just like with
that girl, life has moved on but you still think about her. 50% of the thoughts
are how lucky you are that you never got entangled. The other 50% wants to see
her again. I guess it is good that I have my 5 Hobies stashed away in the
basement in their foam boxes and bring them out every so often to lust after.
Lots better than keeping the girl in the foam box in the basement. Alfred
Hitchcock would have a winner with that movie.

Everyone has their own "benchmark" models. Models
that set a milestone for them for various reasons. I haven't heard any of the
following mentioned, but may have missed them.

For me:

1) Midwest Lil' T-- This was my first sailplane.
Not a completely pure sailplane as I launched it with a Cox .049 on the front.
Hundreds of flights as a kid with this and hooked me on sailplanes.

2) Windfree-- What a great plane. There is so much
I could say about this one.

3) Hobie Hawk-- Never had one but it seems to me
this was one of the first molded planes. Totally out of my league at $149
retail
at the time.

Re: [RCSE] Re: Supra or Onyx JW, these are "Me-Too Designs"

2007-11-30 Thread Mark Miller
History states that Mark Drela built a Mirage a few years back and liked it so
much that he decided to build a modern version. Thus was born the Bubble
Dancer. Of course you would fly a Bubble Dancer against a Mirage and feel
confident you would win. It has 30 years head start in technology advancement.
I would say both were benchmarks and they are both related. They both took the
status quo and changed it to status not so quo.

Afraid I must disagree with you about floaters. While I'll grant that
the Mirage may have been a benchmark, I'd be willing to fly a good
Bubble Dancer vs. you with a Mirage any day. (Not that I'd necessarily win,
we all know it's the pilot, and I don't know you so you may fly a lot
better than I do.) If it was a bit breezy and we had the same airframe
weight I'd even spot you a few points.

Actually, I think the Allegro Lite did some of it first, but the Bubble
Dancer is a combination of full pedal strength with very light weight,
balsa construction, low moment of inertia, and refined aerodynamics. I
don't recall seeing that before the Allegro Lite. The Bubble Dancer
turns very quickly for a 3 meter. My impression was that it did this
quicker than the aileron jobs. I hadn't seen anything quite like it before.
Certainly not a 3 meter that you could full pedal launch and also be
comfortable doing a couple of circles from a hand launch.

Watching Mark launch the Allegro Lite was surreal. Like playing a 33 at
45, or even 78, for those of you who remember vinyl. I don't know what
the imitations fly like yet, though I hope to soon.

In my opinion, Benchmark planes, means some plane to which other planes

building, transport, and flying can be measured. They should be unique

I got it figured out so that the three position switch up turns it off,
middle offers Vario 'on' and down provides altitude and vario and voltage.

AND the trainer button allows you to ask for altitude when you want it,
even when the three position has the Pic turned off.

If you HAVE a Pic and a 9303, ask me, and I'll give you the settings.

I can't confirm it here Todd. I have gotten most of my batteries from them.
They are about 2 miles from my house so I stop by. Always pleasant and
friendly and go out of their way to help. I had a bad cell in a Hobby store
pack in my Evolution XL the day before I left for the NATS. I called about 5
minutes before they closed and they stayed and built 2 packs for me. They both
charged over the rating. Every battery I have gotten from them charged to their
rating or over. I have used them for my camera, cell phone and iPod batteries
too.

Their old shop burned down about a year and a half ago now and it is good to
see them still around.

BTW..They don't know me or Isthmus Models from Adam. I buy retail from them
because I like them. I have suppliers I can get batteries from cheaper but I do
not get the service or quality from them. I'm not saying you are wrong or

I should have listened to a LOT of your guys' advice regarding BATTERIES
AMERICA...what a JOKE of a company.

Past experiences were nominal like "wrong items shipped" only to have me
ship back to wait and wait to finally get what I originally
ordered.dealing with RUDE people on their phone..receiving a couple
RX packs that didn't even SNIFF the capacity level AFTER a 24 hour charge
with my Sirius Pack former..get the runaround over the phone about NOT
PROPERLY CHARGING, etc. Like a Dumb-dumb I keep loyal and try to give them
the benefit of the doubt.

Recently (the past 2 and 1/2 years) I have had THREE painful surgeries on my
FEET that has hampered me to do much flying...or anything at all at that.
Prior to my second operation I purchased servo's and batteries for upcoming
projects once I am back on my feet. Well a THIRD operation was necessary,
unfortunately.and am now getting projects completed. I cycled a 2100 mah
pack , recently, which I purchased roughly a year ago and have not touched
IT or the other products like Volz servo's and another RX pack from a local
hobby store, and it cranked out a wopping 510mah after a 24 hour trickle
charge. I then re-cycled it for another 24 hours and it really jumped BIG
TIME to 710mah!!! Its a 2100 mah pack
The other pack I purchased from a hobby store cycled up "close" to where it
should be and has been working quite well. I asked a friend regarding this
matter and He felt one of the cells went bad. I phoned BATTERIES AMERICA to
have someone tell me "I am a big boy and I NEED to accept "REALITY", in
that, its been over a year and thats that." I told them I understand , BUT,
the pack has NEVER EVER been cycled...EVER. They claimed that I am not
being realistic, as I agreed it has been a year BUT I am honest and have
NEVER touched the battery or cycled it EVER. I re-coiled and stated back at
them "then your telling me that NONE of your packs haven't sat on the
shelves for a year...TWO...or more?? How am I to know they didn't ship
me a 2100 mah RX pack that hasn't been collecting dust on their shelves for
a year or two or three He said "THAT is immaterial"...I asked how? I
asked can you tell me right now that ALL your packs are LESS than a year old
and all cells used to put the packs together? He bobbled about only to
say how its NOT THE SAME POINT , its immaterial to my point and matter and
He can't state they ONLY have batteries put together in less than 12 months.
What a joke of a company...I have had other problemss and have read some of
your guys' NIGHTMARE dealings with these people. I am the one to blame as i
should not have done any business with these people after the humiliating
conversations and lack of prodcing a product accurate with its description
and expected performance. For a measely 20-30 bux they lost a LOYAL and
HONEST customer.

BTW...the VOLZ servos and the DS368's from Johnny Berlin fired up GREAT and
the other battery I purchased that sat around until I recovered from my
painful nightmare cycled up and is working very well. I just don't get it.
How petty are these people and what TERRIBLE business practices they have. I
recently sent in a $30+ servo I bought from JR that stripped out and they
replaced it with a NEW ONE...no questions asked. How can a 2100 mah battery
that was NEVER cycled by the buyer be so bad after sitting in my drawer
awaiting my recovery? I wonder how much people like this TIP a
WAITRESS or WAITER after dinnerhow straight-up LAME and CHEAP! I
will NEVER buy a THING from them EVER AGAIN.

Thanks for the bandwith and sorry you guys had to hear me piss moan and
groan! :O)

[RCSE] Thinking of 2 Meters

2006-08-02 Thread Mark Miller
Just a general question that has nothing to do with 2 meter planes but
sailplanes in general. I had a first flight of a sailplane awhile back. I did
the dive test and flew inverted. Felt nose heavy. Took out lead. Did it
again...took out lead...did it a few more times. All the while putting in down
trim to keep it flying level. I get to the point where I notice that the
decilage (sp) is massively wrong. LOTS of down stab to keep the plane flying
level. Like 1/4" from zero. Take note that in a dive test it is still pulling
up to much. So, the question is should I keep moving the CG back and keep
making the decilage further off or do I put the CG so that I have zero or very
little decilage angle. BTW...It has a full flying stab. I would think having so
much decilage would cause a lot of dragOpinions?

Re: [RCSE] Some More Thoughts on the Nats- Event Director's View

2006-07-30 Thread Mark Miller
Marc,

You did good. No need to feel badly as you have a lot of talented folks helping
out.

I missed NOS but having a full day to RES was a good pay off. I have been
waiting years for it.

Maybe we can have NOS on alternate years to replace XC and scale? Although I'd
love to see XC every year too. I like the free form way of contesting in XC and
trying to fly as much as you can instead of flying a task of time and a landing.

Subject: [RCSE] Some More Thoughts on the Nats- Event Director's View

Much like Jim, here I sit on Sunday AM, and am pretty much wiped out. I
stayed and flew a day of electric soaring just to be proved horsepower is
everything in their world, even in "stock events", but still tried anyway.
It has gotten very hot here since yesterday and that with the fact that the
Soaring Nats is done, means this will be a slow Sunday.

There was good and bad at the Nats for me, the Level V finish was obviously
the high point, and is a high point for my entire soaring life. But from
the context of being the Event Director, these points stand out;

The Good:
The greatest volunteers in the world, many will bring specific names, but
just as Jim noted, these are folks that come in many cases selflessly and
just help, do not fly, and make the event work. I worry that there are not
enough of these folks out there in our future though. I had a note from a
gentleman that really is not a hard core contest guy, but comes down for a
day or two evey year, and had not ever been to the TD part, and was amazed
at how smooth the contest runs.

Great contestants! Gordy, well...;')

The smooth flow of the contest, which I attribute primarily to Marna
Jefferies. Marna has the impound down to an art and I cannot imagine that
anywhere there is a better system than what she has developed for the Nats.
Marna and Larry will be helping at the Masters, which is great.

Scoring was rock solid, Robin Meeks and Barb Stieflel made that fly and I
know that Robin is helping at the Master's as well and F3B trials. Having a
reliable scorer and system is absolute in MOM.

Flight line and landing zones, Larry, Jim and Marti, your guys were on the
ball and that was a non worry in my mind. It looks simple, but the
knowledge that these men have is through the roof, and it takes it.

Sarah, handled the trolls and retrieval, no fuss no muss. Another worry off
my table.

The fact that the two possible cases that serious personnal injury could
have occurred, no one was. One gentlemen was scared to death though and
luckily only scathed, anyone that would have faced what he did would have
been. One note, when it is windy at any contest, let someone throw for you
when you are not confident in the situation, period.

AMA's support of our event was stellar, Ron Morgan and Al Williamson, and
the AMA Maintenence crews were their usual tremendous support of LSF. Also
Dave Brown, he is who greased the AMA's part of the winch deal personnally
and there was no hesitation on his part, if we had it figured out, he would
support it on his end no questios asked. I have many feelings, some good
and bad about Mr. Brown, but he came through for the LSF here big. Finally,
our new friend Amy who works for AMA, she was a great help.

Everyone should thank Tom Kallevang for all the work he has done, is doing,
and will do for LSF. He busts his arse for the organization as no one I
have ever seen. We are lucky we have him.

Again, the volunteers!

Fliers coming to the flight line prepared, from what I saw, folks did a good
job here

Minimum of line breaks in some very heavy winds, 15-20 mph, which can be
done pretty easily today. Thanks go to the fliers.

I did not hear a single gripe about Nostalgia not being flown.

Having the wind stay southwest for five straight days (which almost never
happens), made our life much simpler.

The weather as a whole allowed almost non stop flying, and that is always a
plus. Now, that is not to say it did not make it tough.

Did I mention the volunteers? Ah, yes I did!

The Bad:
The AC power that we have grown to rely on for our flight line charger
system power was lost for the week. And really for no reason other than
someone did not check it in a timely fashion prior to the contest from AMA.
We did have power for our scoring trailer and sound systems as usual, but we
had to use a generator on the flight line(which did the job and was a very
quiet unit). In many ways, it might actually be the better way to go, more
analysis later.

Small flight groups. There were times that we had flight groups of 4 or 5,
and that is way too small. This all eminates from how many we allow on
frequencies per event and the fact that up through the

Re: [RCSE] Cockpit MM Query

2006-06-07 Thread Mark Miller
Word has it that the Cockpit MM is discontinued. In
Europe it will be replaced by the new Cockpit SX but
there are no plans to bring it into the USA. All of
the remaining MM's that Hitec had have been bought by
Hobby Horse so if you are interested in a new one I
would expect to see prices starting to drop. As it is
right now Hobby Horse is selling the MM with RX for
only $25.00 less than an Evo 9 TX alone. I am sure
things will change. It is a nice little TX that was
never marketed or priced competitively.

[RCSE] Antenna Help

2006-05-12 Thread Mark Miller
Guys,

I finished fitting out my new Evolution XL and am
going to maiden it this weekend in Minnesota, weather
permitting. My question is.This is a carbon/Kevlar
hybrid fuselage layup. What is the reccomended routing
for the Rx antenna these days? I have seen a hole in
the bottom of the fuselage with the antenna hanging
out, same hole on bottom and taped for a bit against
the fuselage and hanging down or out the top up to the
vert. fin top. I can't say I have had any issues
running them inside but why tempt fate? I hate to see
the antenna in any case but I'd hate to loose it
because I was to stubborn to do what's right.

Re: [RCSE] "Wait and Wail, one of those really great deals contest pilots!"

2006-04-29 Thread Mark Miller
Guys,

You can find current information on the Evolution and
the new Evolution XL at www.isthmusmodels.com. I am
now the exclusive distributor of Paul Schneider
Modelbau in the USA. The XL had it's first contest
outing in Germany a few weeks ago and got 2nd thru
5th. Designed by Marc Schneider with help of Philip
Kolb the XL is an update to the Evolution with more
span, different planform using a blend of MH-32 and
PK321–325 airfoils by Mr. Kolb.

I just got in a shipment of Evo XL's last week and
they are all spoken for including two for Edwin and
two for Rich Burnoski. I will be making another order
soon so if you want a regular Evolution or the new XL
you best get on the list now. Custom color designs are
available if you order before I place my order.

They are available in GFK, Carbon D-Box and full
Carbon versions. The D-Box is 65 to 66 oz dry with Tow
Hook, carbon pushrods installed, ballast tube and
joiners.

My wife and I have left the shop for our trip to

We are in Bradenton/Sarasota so if there are any
soaring folks near by who want to fly I brought a
Soprano and a little Zephyr II HLG to play with while
we are waiting for things to develop. I have a sinking
feeling I left a stab wire at home. I need to go check

Re: [RCSE] Re-covering an Organic

2006-03-11 Thread Mark Miller
I have tried different extra adhesives when recovering
the sailplanes I sell of this construction type. I
have found that that adding extra adhesive to not
really be worth the effort. The only place I may use
it is on the carbon of the end ribs. The covering gets
pulled when untaping the tip panels. A layer of clear
tape as a barrier will lessen the amount of pulling on
the covering.

The Polycover which is basically Oracover lite under a
different name to have plenty of sticking power alone.
The adhesive sticks very well to the carbon and
carbon/Kevlar hybrid cloth D-Tube. Use any of these
suggestions if you like but it is not necessary.

back in the days gone by you wonder what happened. The
business was a big deal back then. Now it is all a
cottage industry. And no the number of ARF's both
cheap and expensive does not make up the difference in
numbers. I wish I could sell 1/4 of the numbers of
kits that were sold back in the 70's and 80's.

Re: Re: [RCSE] Gluing Servos v.s. Servo Frames

2006-03-01 Thread Mark Miller
Phil,

If keeping a few grams out from around the servo holes
improves yaw inertia by 5% then how can loading your
tube spar with ounces ballast be a real benefit?
Wouldn't it turn a good performing sailplane into a
slug int he turns? Wouldn't you want it in the
fuselage around the CG? We are talking grams here and
when was the last time you saw a servo mounted at the
tip? I can appreciate what Mark D. is saying but .....

[RCSE] Isthmus Models News

2006-02-06 Thread Mark Miller
Folks,

I wanted to give you all an update on our adoption. We
were supposed to leave today but were called on Friday
and told to postpone until more news arrived today.
After talking to our agency they said that our
appointment for this Thursday has been changed to
March due to rescheduling at the National Adoption
Center in Ukraine.

Because of the birth of our domestic adoption child in
early April the March date will not work for us. The
earliest we can possibly travel is November if at all.
As you can imagine this is devastating news for my
wife and me. We will continue to look forward to the
birth of our daughter in Florida.

So...Isthmus Models is back open.

quite an adventure.

I hope to get to visit some friends while I am there

the following things for sale. I would like to get it
into your hands rather than having it sit here while
I'm gone.

Re: [RCSE] An analogy (regarding Model Aviation magazine)

2005-11-02 Thread Mark Miller
Jim,

I think you are right on here. Another analogy would
be how many of us drive cars but do not take part in
competition? But many many people want to know what
has happened in competitions around the world be it
F1, Indy, LeMans, NASCAR etc.

I will go back to my previous post and say that the
competition we are referring to is not just a
competition. It is our National Championships. In my
mind what the AMA has done is to dimish the importance
of their own members who strive to become the National
Champion of their respective form of the hobby. Maybe
our new Champion is the fellow who wins Top Gun in the
AMA's mind. Maybe Top GUn is commercially more viable
but that shows that the AMA is not capable of
promoting our NATS properly. It should be promoted and
refered to as an important part of our hobby.

Re: [RCSE] Nats Issue and AMA ED

2005-10-31 Thread Mark Miller
It would seem to me that if they can give many pages
to large contests like Top Gun or Joe Nall or the
other big commercial meets that they can give coverage
for our National Champoinships. After all it is the
AMA that is putting it on and they have a duty to it's
members to report on the chamopins of all forms of our
hobby. Not everyone has a computer to get the daily
NATS news and so in my opinion it should be in one
special edition of Model Aviation. How else are they
going to let the members know?

I just cannot see how members would not want to know
who their National champs are but would rather know
who won Top Gun.

Re: [RCSE] Lamenting the lack of available sailplane builder's kits

2005-08-08 Thread Mark Miller
Just so you all know,

I just bought the CARA and Resolution designs from Ed
Whyte. The CARA is a composite fuselage with built up
wing. MH32 airfoil and carbon tube spar. The
RESolution has been redesigned from it's original foam
core wing to a composite fuselage with built up wing
and again, carbon tube spar. I am further changing it
to have a MH 32 airfoil like the CARA.

I also currently have the Mirage short kit, soon to be
a full kit, the original Mark's Models Mini Bird of
Time 2 meter and the 1.5 meter Zephyr II old school
HLG.

I also have many other kit designs in the wings as
time permits. I will say though that there is only a
small demand for kits these days. I can keep doing it
because I do not rely on them solely to keep the
business afloat or to pay to develop new kits. At
heart I'm a wood kit guy and I will keep what I can
alive and available.

Re: [RCSE] RES not for the "elite"

2005-08-06 Thread Mark Miller
I agree that RES is currently not in the same league
as unlimited as far as prestige goes. I still maintain
that it is solely because it is treated that way by
contest organizers and possibly by some of the pilots
them selves. Treat it like it was a National class
event and it will be. Treat it like a fun fly and it
will be. The class won't change the perception. Only
the participants and organizers can do that.

Re: [RCSE] One full day of RES

2005-08-01 Thread Mark Miller
I'm all for a full day of RES. The way it was
explained to me regarding the reason for keeping 2
days of 2 meter was that it was a "premier" event like
Unlimited and RES was not. I would say that over the
past 4 or 5 years RES had advanced and grown in
popularity around the country. The technology has
advanced to the point where RES designs are winning
unlimited contests these days. 2 meter is declining
around the country and technology and market share is
stagnant or declining.

The number of people flying RES at the NATS is not
what it could be because, in my opinion it is
essentially a half day of flying for a full price
entry. It is also placed badly where folks are trying
to get home after a long week of flying. I feel it is
the class that has actually been growing over the
years nation wide.

The way it can become a "premier" event is by treating
it that way. I would not mind even seeing the Dan
Pruss award be based on the point total for 2 meter,
Unlimited and RES. It is 3 different ways of flying
and would reward the versitility of the team. This
will, in my mind, be as the award was intended which
was based on 3 classes, 2 meter, standard and
unlimited.

Seeing a full day for DLG with 20 entries is kind of
weird.

Also, who would like to see a Hobie Hawk sub class in
Nostalgia? I would love to see a bunch of Hobies
mixing it up. The Isthmus Models Hobie Hawk Challenge.
I'll provide a trophy.

1 contest 2 pieces of wood. The first day the wind
blew like hell and it was loaded up with one tube of
ballast. The 2nd was much better will low wind and no
ballast.

Congrats to Perry!

Re: [RCSE] Looking for a Multiplex Lucky kit or fuselege only

I have just become a dealer for the newly reintroduced
old Multiplex kit line. Originally they were made for
Multiplex by a German firm. Multiplex sold the line to
the firm that was making the kits for them. I can get
the same line up of kits as before and they will be
making some new stuff. I will be adding them to my
website as time permits. If anyone wants to get in on
an initial order let me know. The more I can order the
better the price I can give. When you are battleing
the Euro exchange rate you need any advantage you can
get.

I'm up in Minnesota today. There is the first club
contest of the year here. I'm going to maiden my Trio.

Re: [RCSE] FVK Graphite or something similar....

2005-05-05 Thread Mark Miller
I have Trio's in stock and 4 more just got out of
Customs and are on their way to me. Bob Johnson has
his flying and likes it a lot. I'll let him comment if
he sees this. I should have mine flying this weekend
so I'll be down in Chicago soon to give you a test
ride Jim.

http://www.isthmusmodels.com/pages/trio.html

Also, just out of Customs are 2 Pipers which is a full
house Soprano. I have not had one long enough to build
and fly it but I did build one for Larry Fogel at
Torrey pines and he loves it. Mike McGowan has one
also. Part of the fun of the model business is that
customers come first and you end up selling things and
you don't have any to fly.

I will also be receiving 4 Fireblade 2 DLG sailplanes.
This is a redesigned version of the Fireblade/Hyper
that has been sold out of Europe for awhile. I had
them add more dihedral and went to a full flying stab
with other weight saving and detail changes.

http://www.isthmusmodels.com/pages/fireblade.html

More Sopranos should be here around the end of May or
early June along with a test shot of the Duet. This is
a 2 meter RES in the Ukranian build style with Pod and
boom similar to the Trio. It will be available in both
sailplane and electric versions. I think this is going
to be one nice model.

2005 Volvo V70 R Wagon.

Nothing like a 300 HP family wagon. Want to see Muncie

With the V70 R you can do both with a flick of a
switch. ItÂ’s all possible thanks to a semi-active
chassis with Four-C technology. The Volvo V70 R
provides plenty of room for your sailplanes too. Volvo
raced them sucessfully on the European Touring Car

[RCSE] Sopranos Come and Gone

2005-04-11 Thread Mark Miller
Hi All,

I got a shipment of Sopranos in on Friday and they are
all spoken for. I have another order due to be shipped
early May. If you want to get on the wait list let me
know preferably at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have
Trios in stock as well as a few electric front
fuselages for the Soprano.

Due in with the Sopranos in May is a prototype RES 2
meter called Duet. I am having one sent to test and
see if there are needed changes. It will be pod and
boom with the typical Ukranian built up wing and tail.
Shoud be a cute little bugger. It will also be
available in electric version.

Also note that "by May" means it will be shipped to me
in May. Last time it took almost two weeks for Customs
processing and then the shipping label fell off and it
was at my local DHL depot for almost a week until we
found it. Sometimes it can take two weeks to get here,
sometimes not.

Cheers,

Mark Miller
