 Hi guys,

I have it on bad authority that those guys who sign up at
 the last
minute will get better fitting T shirts!

The goal is 100 (you know like the movie 400...but less).

There are about 80 spots left.

The top Turks are coming, it would be great to get Jojo
 back but we'd
need to get him an airline ticket I think.

Might have some Aussies, Canadians, and even some guys from
 Illinios.

Sorry the top Olympic Volley Beach Volley Ball team is
 already committed
elsewhere so its for surethey won't be there. :-(

So here's the dealif you haven't signed up yet,
 get your
registration in! Jim McCarthy is dying to get the
 registration done and
 locked...so help him out.

Be warned you will be flying against Louisville Soaring
 phenom, little
Lee! (yes he is already signed up!)

Contact Jim McCarthy directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] via
 email if not
with your registration, at least to let him know you ARE
 indeed
attending. That will help him and organizers make plans,
 they want this
one to be everything a Masters event can be!

Get away from the television and post him a note!

 See you there!

Re: [RCSE] Top end speed in MPH ! Math quiz

2006-09-26 Thread Tom Kallevang
Here are some specifics for your word problem:

The McCann winches used at the AMA/LSF Nats and LSF WSM are 2 inch
cores on a 6 inch flange.

Winchline used is Memphis Net Twine TWB-30, 290 pound test braided
nylon line.

Two spools of this line fill the winch drum almost to the 6 inch flange
limit, giving approximately 680 feet (207 meters) to the turnaround.
At the WSM, we reduced the distance to the turnarounds to approximately
150 meters.

Have fun with the math ...

I just knew Butch would be one of us when the second or third time I
ran into him at a St Louis contest, Butch grabbed someone's hat from
the ground and tore it up, then, when he thought no one was looking, he
lifted his leg on a brand new Bag Lady TX tote. The owner of the tote
never knew, thinking it was rain run-off from a tent, but Butchie was a
great judge of character.

Butch will be missed by all who knew him.

Re: [RCSE] The heck with World F3B Wins, DP gets last 2m award

2006-07-30 Thread Tom Kallevang
Gordy gets it part right (again).

The Hi Johnson trophy is an AMA award for the highest single score at
the Soaring Nats. AMA used to run the events with all classes flown
each day (you built a 2M, 100 and an unlimited plane every day) and
flew a couple rounds of each class daily. This resulted in each class
flying the same number of rounds, and the Hi Johnson awarded the single
highest point score of the classes.

With the advent of splitting the classes into day slots and the demise
of the 100 Standard Class, we are now able to fly more rounds of 2M
than Unlimited due to the difference in the number of pilots.

LSF approached AMA last week about how to go about changing the
criteria for the award to something more in keeping with the original
intent of the Hi Johnson trophy. After a short conversation, a process
was adopted and I will draft a letter asking to revise the criteria so
the award is independent of the number of rounds flown in each class.

This was what I meant at the workers banquet when I said Daryl won the
last Hi Johnson 2M Award, not that anything was changing as relates to
2M at the Nats.

[RCSE] Soaring Nats Workers' Raffle Donations

2006-07-18 Thread Tom Kallevang
Each year, at the Soaring Nationals Awards Banquet held the after the
closing of Unlimited, we hold a no fee raffle for the volunteer
workers. It is our attempt to reward them for their hard work and
dedication in making the Soaring Nationals a success throughout the
week. People, just like you, donate the raffle prizes for this event.
To show our appreciation, the LSF will put a link to your web site and
advertise your company and its donation(s) on the LSF web site located
at http://www.silentflight.org/NATS2006/Donor2006.html. As you might
imagine, the LSF web site is a busy place as well, with over 7800
members, as well as non-members, checking the LSF web site for News,
Events, and membership information.

I know that asking to donate your time and hard earned dollars in the
form the products that you represent is difficult, but know that your
consideration is greatly appreciated by all.

A number of people and companies who have donated great prizes for last
years raffle will join us again this year. Won’t you join them and help
us as well by donating any R/C Soaring related item(s) that you can.

Some have responded to my direct mailing by sending prizes to AMA and
for that LSF thanks you. Once I am in Muncie, I will take delivery of
those prizes from AMA and update the website. If you email me with
your donations, I can update the site prior to receipt of the
donations.

It's not too late to contribute, the Raffle will be held at the Roberts
Hotel on Thursday evening, July 27th.

You can ship donations to:

[RCSE] Old Nats Winches for Sale

2006-07-18 Thread Tom Kallevang
After many, many years of hard use, the red Wade winches used at the
AMA/LSF Nats have been retired.

In the fall of 2005, LSF and AMA negotiated a deal where LSF was to
procure and built 12 new winches and turnarounds, based on the Tim
McCann winch kits and off-the-ground turnarounds. We are using new
3110 Ford long shaft starter motors and winch wiring kits from Tom
Bianchi at Injoy Lure Coursing.

Over the past 8 weeks, I have been working with a group of fellow SOAR
members to assemble the new winches. The biggest job was to switch out
the Real Balls from the Wade winches to the new winches. I will have a
web page up on the LSF site by the end of the week chronicling the
winch builds.

With that said, LSF is selling the Wade winches to help underwrite the
costs of the new equipment. The winches have been reassembled and all
but one are in an operable state (special deal to anyone interested in
the fixer-upper). $300 per winch, delivered at the Soaring Nats.
Includes foot pedal, battery cable and ground-mounted turnaround.

We will not ship (too heavy, too expensive), but if you are interested
in a winch and you know someone coming to Muncie, ask them if they
would transport it back for you.

And, of course, anyone wishing to make a donation to the winch fund
would also be appreciated.

There are already a number spoken for, I hope to see all the Wade
winches go to the good homes they so rightly deserve.

Please reply to me off-list or at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[RCSE] AMA Soaring Nats Reminders

2006-05-02 Thread Tom Kallevang
Looks like I gave my Registrar a bum steer and we haven't been keeping
AMA appraised of the current entries ... my bad.

The official registrations are on the LSF website as LSF controls
entries for frequency allocations. See the latest at:

We'll get this sorted out quickly, please accept my apologies for any
confusion and/or consternation it may have caused.

But since we're talkikng about it, at the same link you can get to a
Soaring Nats registration form and come join us for late July in
Muncie. Registrations for the AMA/LSF Soaring Nats must be postmarked
not later than June 1st to give the Matrix Magician time to work his
magic.

2005-08-09 Thread Tom Kallevang
Our track record with the electric park flyers has been different. Even
with Li-po batteries, the newbies see us flying sailplanes for 30
mintutes or more and they get real interested. Many of them are now
moving toward larger, better performing e-sailplanes, and a few of us
are having a ball with the small electric 3D machines and choppers.
Cross-pollenation does work sometimes.

There's room for most, if not all, and especially with one of our
fields being public land and shared with the local equestrians, we
can't limit our help to the newbies, we educate both flying skills and
the sandbox skills required to share the property. Our only
restrictions are sailplane and/or electrics, no wet power as it scares
the horses.

It also helps to have a presence with the local hobby shops that are
selling the park flyers ... we offer assistance and guidance that helps
ensure a positive experience to the newcomer, and THAT you can
literally take to the bank.

[RCSE] NATS HLG Change - And Some Thoughts ...

2005-07-20 Thread Tom Kallevang
First of all, as regards Nats HLG, the reason there was a rule change
so late in the game is that a number of competitors suggested TO AMA
that the AMA Primary/Backup rule does not fit into the HLG venue of
multiple official flights within a given window of time. A competitor
needing to validate moving from the primary to the backup with the CD
before changing planes would cause the competitor to lose much time
during the active window. Also, the rule states that once the primary
is retired, it cannot be reintroduced to the competition.

The altered rule now allows movement to the backup with CD validation
AFTER the round ends, and allows the repair and subsequent re-entry of
the primary into the competition.

LSF operates the Soaring Nats, but it is still run by AMA under AMA
rules. Deviations from AMA rules must be approved by the AMA Nats CD,
the LSF CD of record, the LSF Event Director and the AMA Technical
Director. A LOT of email was exchanged over the past few days.

There is supposed to be a rules change proposal coming this cycle to
eliminate this rule for HLG.

Now, for the larger issue:

Is it time to retire the Primary/Backup rule entirely from AMA
Soaring competition rules? What does the Primary/Backup rule really do
for us?

What does everybody think about that? Is there enough feeling among
the competition soaring community to kill this outdated rule across the
board?

We who fly the OVSS circuit have routinely dropped this rule (per AMA
procedures by declaring the change on the sanction form) and have
noticed that very few pilots actually build and switch between multiple
models in a given competition.

The rules change cycle is coming to a close this Fall, who will lead
the charge?

Reply: [RCSE] Had a chance to test the Freq Checker with its Ext Antenna Tonite

2005-06-20 Thread Tom Kallevang
I made my own antenna like Mike's from the Radio Shack parts he
indicated. Simply used a 4-40 cap screw self-threaded into the mono
jack.

I have played with the unit for the past several weeks at the Ft Wayne
OVSS contest, our two SOAR club fields, out and around my home (no
flying fields nearby) and at a couple of power fields and found the
following:

1. With antenna plugged in but not extended, the number of false
positives was about the same as without an antenna.

2. Antenna plugged in and extended, apparently my house radiates on
CH32 (no R/C tx's on at the time).

3. At the field, 50 yards from the flight line, antenna extended,
checker showed only the channels in use on the line

4. On the flight line, antenna extended, ALL channel led's lit up
(swamped).

It was most cool to see 6 guys light up all 50 channels. We all got a
good chuckle from that!

I would suggest that the Channel Checker be used as a device for
channel awareness by afixing it near where you would post your
frequency pins, etc. In that manner, the number of false positives
should remain low and the indications you get should be mostly correct.

Keep it away from a concentration of RF energy ... unless you need a
night light.

If you need qualitative data, need to find spurious and/or off-field
transmissions, need to check the radiation of a particular transmitter,
get yourself the Channel Analyzer from Aero-Spectra or another
lab-quality frequency analyzer.

REply: [RCSE] Had a chance to try the Freq Checker this weekend

2005-05-23 Thread Tom Kallevang
I purchased one of the Aerospectra Channel Analyzers when they first
hit the market and have used mine for years ... it travels to all the
contests I attend by driving. Unfortunately, this weekend at OVSS #1
where Gordy was showing off the so-so performance of the Hobbico LED
box, my Channel Analyzer was in the parcel post on its way back to me
after a tune-up.

In speaking with Jim Hauser of AeroSpectra on the tuneup for my unit,
he mentioned that demand for this high-end unit has dropped off and he
is considering ceasing the manufacture of it. This would be a huge
loss to the the R/C community, as you can actually eyeball if a Tx is
clean or not without a scope and an advanced degree. Yes, the price
tag takes it out of the buy one and throw it in your flight box
category, but any club serious about safety and/or running major
contests should consider picking up one of these while you still can.

If you don't have a real scanner, the Hobbico unit might be OK and is
certainly better than nothing, but it is not something I would use to
decide if it's OK to fly a kilo-buck model based on what it sees.

One man's opinion, your mileage may vary.

tk
--- John Derstine [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
If your goal is safe flying, a real investment in a quality scanner
 is a
must for any club or serious end user. The Aerospectra is a
 commercial
grade hand held unit that gives meaningful info. Not only what
frequencies are on, but their db and bleed over into adjacent
 channels.
You can zoom in and analyze a small section of the frequency band, or
view the whole spectrum for interference. Of course the only accurate
way to measure is with an antenna that can accurately scan the entire
 area.

The price is beyond the budget of most individuals at $895.00, but
 for a
club it makes a great investment. We used one at all our events in
Elmira, and saved many aircraft with it, as well as track down
 offending
 transmitters with splatter.

Re: [RCSE] OVSS and Line Breaks

2005-05-17 Thread Tom Kallevang
I've followed this thread with some interest ... as JB said, we've
discussed this topic trekking back and forth from many contests in the
van.

The advent of affordable molded models has done more to cause line
problems than any other single facet of our chosen sport. Today's
molded sailplanes are so strong that they can easily part 200# test
winch line, almost at will. This is the primary reason we in the OVSS
and AMA/LSF Nats have moved to the 290# test lines we use today. If
there are no burns, abrasions, crappy knots, etc. it's unlikely that
you will be able to break the line on purpose without damaging the
model.

With aircraft of this magnitude of strength, the need for developing
good winch technique has fallen by the wayside. In my early days in
the sport, everyone flew open framework gasbags and a full pedal launch
on our SIX volt winches would result in a Monokoted bag full of sticks.
You learned to temper your foot or you learned to rebuild - fast!

Today's competition pilot doesn't need to develop any such technique,
he can simply hook up, step on the pedal and GO! Poor winch technique
is easy to spot, the smoke coming from the winch armature and excessive
wing flex are sure indicators. Moderating the amount of energy in the
line, motor and wings are all a part of launching technique that is all
too lacking among many competition pilots who have skipped the early
learning curves of winching built-up, more fragile models.

Examination of the line break often yields the answer to why the line
parted, the aforementioned abrasions, poor knots, frozen turnaround
pulleys ... equipment failures should result in a relight. The pilot
that breaks the line as they push over into the zoom has no call for a
relight, he got 90+% of the way up. The pilot who full pedal launches
through a thermal on tow shouldn't get a relight, either, unless the
equipment failed (and if he had proper technique, the line likely would
have stayed intact).

Weak links ... tried in F3B a decade or more ago, the weak link was
dropped quickly because the relative weakness of the link was actually
seen to be a safety hazard as most links failed just out of the
launcher's hand. Yes, the (rather large) relative difference between
the line and the link had much to do with the problem, but what is the
right differential? For a 100 RES or NOS vs a 3.9 meter Sharon?

Do we need devices on the winches to set torque or tension limits?
Same issue as the weak link ... what's the right amount of torque and
is it the same for every model?

A seasoned pilot acting as the Launch Master can readily evaluate each
launch and come to a likely first approximation as to cause for line
failure on the spot ... subsequent investigation at the point of
failure serves to validate whether the call was correct or not. I
would guess that the Launch Master is going to be right the majority of
the time.

Reserve one or two winches on the line for relights ... pilot calls the
break, Launch Master either denies the relight request and the pilot
continues the flight or confirms the relight and the pilot comes down
IMMEDIATELY for relaunch. If the number of breaks exceeds the number
of backup winches, call the group down and start over. I suggest if
that many lines break in the same round there are either equipment
issues or you're winching over desert scrub or through rose bushes.

Rather than look for a technological silver bullet, I propose that we,
as a part of bringing newer flyers into the competition circuit, teach
winch technique alongside air reading skills and spot landing practice.
It will improve the quality of the pilots, it will improve equipment
life, and it will allow more flying, which is really the whole point,
isn't it?

IMHO,

Re: [RCSE] Frequency Scanners

2005-01-18 Thread Tom Kallevang
I recommend the Aerospectra unit, have had mine for 10 years and the
service support and performance are outstanding. Not cheap, but it's
truly an investment. If your club puts on a good sized contest, you
should have one. Does 72, 75, 50 and Ham bands.

[RCSE] NATS Entry Forms/Schedule

2004-12-07 Thread Tom Kallevang
Yes, this is earlier than we all expected, Lonee Estep is getting off
to quick start. There are a couple of errors on the entry form on the
AMA website. I have requested the changes, but I do have an edited
.pdf version available at:

http://www.silentflight.org/NATS2005/Nats2005.html

Click on the Nats Registration Packet link or wait a day or so and get
a corrected copy from AMA (I'll post the update on the LSF site as
well).

F3B is a typo, it is indeed an F3J year, and we are allowing 4 entries
per frequency in F3J only to spur pilots to fly together as teams. The
entry fee is $35 like the other two day events. There's an extra line
between Sat/Sun and Mon, with a $25 tag ... ignore that, it's a cut and
paste orphan from morphing the form from last year to 2005.

The schedule has shifted to a Friday to Friday week. The Executive
Council mandated a compression of the Nats schedule. They took some
practice days away from some groups, split frequencies among different
R/C events to run concurrently ... Soaring retains its 8 days, just
offset a day earlier. As a result, the schedule was changed only by
shifting HLG to Friday from Monday. This minimal change should allow
us to evaluate how the shift may affect our attendance.

Watch the page above for updates.

[RCSE] Postal Contests and LSF Points

2004-11-08 Thread Tom Kallevang
A question came up over the weekend asking if a soaring pilot competed
in an event as a postal contestant, could that pilot claim LSF
Contest Points.

Our good LSF Secretary, Jim Deck, quickly found the pertinent clause on
the LSF Achievement Voucher (Gee, the framers thought of everything):

On the back of your voucher, Under Section 11 - Competition; A -
Size it states: All contestants must compete at the same location on
the same date.

Therefore, no postal contests are valid for LSF points.

Re: [RCSE] Contests, Landings, etc.

2004-09-28 Thread Tom Kallevang
I do this at the SOAR OVSS Fred Contest each year:

1. Short (strong) lines: About 200 meters (650 ft) of 290 lb test
braided nylon line as used at the Nats;

2. FAI Landing tapes, added as bonus after FLIGHT scores are
normalized (1,100 points is perfect, landing is a 10% point bonus);

3. No landing skegs/arrestors allowed (I always have a hacksaw
available for guys who know the rules and still show up with a molded
in skeg);

4.  Long task times (10+ minute targets);

5. Seeded Man-on-Man (OVSS format, keeps the big boys pounding on each
other all day, they like it and so do the spectators);

6.  Fly what you want, no primary/backup models designated;

We have a great time, fly all day, BS and funfly until dark (or later),
and most of us are still talking by the end of the weekend.

What's not to like?

Go back a few months and read Dave Brown's President's Column in Model

Makes sense that AMA has been so successful in collaborating with gov't
due to the demonstated ability to self-regulate. You want to be tested

Seems prudent to comply ... IMHO.

[RCSE] Toledo 2004

2004-04-06 Thread Tom Kallevang
I must echo the sentiments already expressed by others ... this year's
Toledo Expo was a great time.

To be immersed in everything R/C for three days, great! I only wish I
had had more opportunity to walk around and ogle all the neat stuff.
Can you believe it, I didn't buy one darned thing all weekend!

True, for a glider bum there isn't a lot to be seen, but look at the
big TOC type acro ships and you see the same molding techniques in use
there as in our TD moldies ... and at quite a bit bigger size.
Gorgeous paint schemes on every one of them.

Electrics ... the glow engine manufacturers should be reading the
writing on the wall ... if you have noise issues, the electric wave may
be your salvation. Li-poly batteries that are taking more and more
abuse the way Ni-Cad and NiMh do today, and the price is coming down
all the time. Giant scale and gas motors are strong, too.

It was great to see so many LSF members over the weekend ... we were
able to update the database for many members coming back from years of
inactivity or other pursuits. Seeing old friends, making new friends,
that's what the hobby is all about, and Toledo is a great place to do
it.

Be sure to carve out some time next year for the 51st annual Toledo
Show.

[RCSE] OFB Resurfaces

2003-09-23 Thread Tom Kallevang
I received a call from out of the blue Sunday evening
that I thought I might share with you:

John Nielsen, one of the founding members of the
Chicago SOAR club, emcee of the many SOAR NATS
banquets and the man who decimated Schwinn Corp. each
year to bring adminitrative assistants (we called them
secretaries back then)to perform the scoring for the
SOAR NATS called me.

John is 79 years old, has lived all over the country,
had been flying some quarter scale (J-3 Cubs on
floats), took up and gave up full scale sailing on the
Great Lakes and is now renovating some of his original
sailplanes, two that he flew at the first
international soaring event held in Doylestown PA
before soaring was an official event in AMA OR FAI.

Seems John was surfing the web and came across the LSF
website (SilentFlight.org)and recognized my name as a
potential nominee for office, followed the links and
read my bio and decided to call. John is interested
in rejoining AMA and SOAR once some pesky cataracts
are taken care of and he returns to Illinois from his
Florida winter compound in the Spring. He even wanted
to find out what his original LSF number and level
were (both long forgotten) and he's interested in some
of the woody events Ray Hayes is promoting.

We spent over an hour talking about all the changes in
the sport since the early 70's, the mutual friends,
some passed on, some still active, and the 30 years
just melted away.

What a great sport that fosters relationships that
transcend generations like this.
