I own 3 Sirius chargers and they are the most reliable,
trouble-free support equipment Ive owned to date. They have bailed out

battery problems that the Sirius tipped me off to in advance. Mine get lugged
to the field non-stop..and keep working! Doesnt get much better
than that. Thanks GJ for an excellent product.

Klaus,

I do not know about Bruce, but I had to get two units because everytime I went
to charge my plane or TX one of my flying buddies already had there stuff
hooked up to my charger. I guess I should not complain too much though since I
used to do the same thing to my brother before I purchased my first charger
from George. I will probably have to get another one this season since a
couple of times I have gone to charge and had planes and TX's already hooked to
both of my chargers. George's chargers are top of the line stuff and damn near
idiot proof. Hell if I can use them I guess they are idiot proof.

[RCSE] Sirius Charger

2004-10-28 Thread RegDave
Unsolicited testimonial.

Been using a Sirius Pro and a Sirius 100 (for DLG) for several years now
(old enough that the Pro is the earlier 1000mA version).

I have NEVER had a problem with a Rx or Tx pack while using these chargers
at the field or on the way to the field. They're particularly useful at
contests to be sure you're peaked up late in the day.

On the discharge cycle on my Einstein or Triton, I always get full capacity
from the pack after running a fast charge with the Sirius.

You shouldn't go to the field without one of these in your flight box. Set
up a cigarette lighter plug (Radio Shack) with female banana plugs on the
other end and you're good to go anywhere. It's on our RCSD gift list again this
year. A really handy unit and a great idea for the modeler on your Christmas
list.

I have a Sirius, TRC, Hobbico, and a FMA super nova.
The FMA is the newest, and seems to be the most versatile.
It is very configurable - plugplay or custom cook. Costs about $130.
It only does one pack at a time, however --- but it will handle motor packs
 as well as rec/trans packs.

I personally find the FMA Supernova (sold under a few names,
often for less) best suited to field fast charging of motor
packs. It can fast charge 1600 mAh packs in about 20 minutes
at the 3C rate (for bigger packs try a Novak Millennium).

I don't like it's 500 mA discharge rate for cycling receiver
packs. This just seems a bit high to me, as I like to discharge
at roughly the same rate as actual use (250 mA is typical for me).
The battery experts say the high rate is not a problem for small
packs, though it may cause the reported capacity to be a little
lower than when in actual use.

All in all though, the FMA Supernova it a great product.

I just purchased a new 1100mah battery pack for my stylus and was
wondering if I can charge it properly on my Sirius charger. The green
light on the charger has been lit for almost 2 hours now without any
 flashing.

I charge my 1000mah battery all the time with the Sirius. If the
transmitter has a diode, the green light won't come on. Green light
indicates it IS charging. It will only charge if it can read the
voltage of the battery, which it can't if a diode is in the circuit.

Assuming you've got the Sirius Charge Pro, then yes.
The Rx side does 3 to 6 cells, and the Tx side 4 to 8,
so both outputs will do 5 cells properly. Actually, as
far as I can tell all their chargers will do 5 cell
packs. You can check out the spec's at their website:
http://www.teleport.com/~sirius/

FWIW I run 5 cell packs in my F3B models and can confirm
that the Sirius Charge Pro works just fine on them. It's
now the only charger I use on my RC batteries.

Sirius Pro and Sirius 100 are not really
delta-peak chargers. They stop right at
the peak, not past it. I conclude this
from watching the NiCd pack voltage after
each current burp at the end of the charge.

So the weak post-peak voltage drop of NiMH
should not be an issue. The Sirius chargers
don't even look for the drop.

The Sirius charger that I have uses the Galaxy Power charger chip which was
designed to do NiMH as well as NiCd. It uses voltage slope termination and
cuts off when the voltage slope (not the voltage) peaks. Since voltage
slope stops at about 80-90% of full capacity, the chip then goes into a
times "top-off" mode. The method is great for NiCd and NiMH that are uses
at low current, like receivers and transmitters.

The Sirius Smart Charger pro is nice, but add a
AstroFlight Whattmeter and you have a near perfect
product - it can't cycle, and if you use it for

Almost 100% fool proof, too! A bit like a Schulze
