Well you have greater problems than the readonly issue you mentioned
earlier. You cannot have custom tags as attributes of other nested
tags. However you can have nested tags within the body of other tags.
Basically you cannot use the bean:write tag as the value of the
attribute value.

The problem in both sides of this question is the word BIT.

You can't develop anything with a BIT of understanding, you are accessing
databases, remote servers, possibly message brokers, and so on, then what is
a bit of knowledge becomes lack of it. To do those things you have to go to
the end, to do it correctly and efficiently, otherwise the result will never
be good enough.

The same, obviously is valid for web design. Poor design, amateurish look
and feel. A bit of knowledge doesn't pay.

Certainly. However, think of the alternative: custom Java code embedded in
a JSP page, written in a style that only the author of that page
understands.

IMHO, takes a lot more effort to understand a Java-encrusted JSP page that
has gone through 6+ months of maintainence than learning a new tag library.

Tag libraries come down to easily-read abstractions. One can abstract a JSP
page with Model 1 code using beans and small scriptlets, but the fact
remains there's a cognitive dissonance between the constant
mental-mode-switching between tags and Java.

There are lots of network toolkits out there... one for Win32, one for UNIX,
one for Java, etc... There are subtle differences, but they all have the
same intent. Ditto for taglibs.

Certainly these questions are worthwhile. I've seen the dynamic-tag
approach work wonders over the years, with WebObjects, Cold Fusion, Struts,
and now ASP.NET. It's a workable approach... But as Ted said, Struts
doesn't require the use of taglibs. It's just (very tasty) gravy...

RE: Wondering About Struts...

2002-01-22 Thread Stuart Charlton

I'm also a WebObjects guy, taglibs pretty much do the same thing as
WOComponents, and I can't particularily think of any case where they can't.
You can create tags that are as coupled or uncoupled to each other as you'd
like.

Not impossible at all -- one could do this with nested tags
and an , so why couldn't one do it in a custom manner?

> in one of the current projects im working on, we need to display search

Is this a static or runtime determination of which render component to use?
If it's dynamic, you'd have to write a visitor to pick the right renderer.
If it's static, it's just a matter of nesting a renderer tag inside your
table building tag. I'd need more concrete information to give you a code
example of the idea

Naturally the main thing annoying about writing custom taglibs is that the
BodyContent stack model takes getting used to... but its complexity is due
to the fact it gives you pretty much full control to do almost whatever
you'd like with your tags.

I've had to come to some decisions recently in this area. I originally
considered Velocity as an alternative to JSP. But I realized after awhile
that really, they both force web designers (creative types that work with
HTML and graphics in tools like DreamWeaver) and Java developers (not
typically so good with HTML) to collaborate on a common artifact (either a
JSP or a Velocity template) to combine their respective work. There is never
_really_ a single handoff from one team to the other. My experience has been
that the artifact tends to bounce back and forth between the two teams as
changes occur to creative content, and yes, even requirements, that require
either the web developer or the Java developer to update it. Since neither
team is well versed in the proficiencies of the other, the Java developers
tend to break the creative and the web developers tend to break the Java (be
it scriptlets or taglibs). In the end, you have to throw in a couple
"iterations" of this cycle just for bug fixing. That gets to be real
troublesome when your customer insists on specifying the product in
"web-time" -- even making changes the day before release to production.

On the advice of some, I started looking at using XML and XSLT as a means
for merging in dynamic content. Problem is, anecdotal evidence is that using
XML nd XSLT for web presentation isn't particularly fast nor scalable. And
XSLT isn't a technology that either web developer or Java developers seem to
take to rapidly.

Along the way, I came across the Enhydra project and a presentation
technology developed by them called XMLC. This technology intends to fully
separate the web developer from the Java developer by creating a Java class
representing an HTML page as a DOM in a Java class. The web developer only
deals with web presentation technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.
The Java developer gets a JavaBean-like class that permits insertion of
dynamic content in the DOM of the HTML at runtime. After the dynamic content
is inserted, the final HTML stream can be generated. The only collaboration
between the two development teams is on how to identify content insertion
points. This is done using standard id and class attributes of HTML elements
and the SPAN tag when necessary. You can get more information on this
technology here:
http://xmlc.enhydra.org/

My team is currently using XMLC with Struts. We use standard Action classes
as the web-side controllers that process HTTP requests. Depending on the
outcome of that processing, the controller Action forwards to another Action
class that is responsible for generating the View. That Action class can
receive some information in the request and session scope collections as
well as perform any dynamic data retrieval necessary. It then instantiates
an XMLObject representing the HTML page and calls methods to add/remove
content elements as necessary, generating the response stream when done.

Using XMLC technology, we intend to completely abandon JSP. Frankly, both
sides of my development team are excited (still) about XMLC. I haven't had a
chance yet to look at the VelServlet implementation or the ContextHelper
object that Ted mentioned. Perhaps these will make use of XMLC even
better/easier/more fulfilling than it has been already.

Best regards,
Jim Cakalic

Well you have greater problems than the readonly issue you mentioned
earlier. You cannot have custom tags as attributes of other nested
tags. However you can have nested tags within the body of other tags.
Basically you cannot use the bean:write tag as the value of the
attribute value.

Sounds like you need to expand your knowledge. Coming from a WebObjects

really need to spend some time studying taglibs and JSP's and forget about

Design question - output Action

2002-01-22 Thread Carl Hope

I'm fairly new to Struts and have just built my first mini-project. I have
a basic question that I couldn't find addressed in the mail archives.

I think I understand the "input" half of a user interaction - when
information is input by the user, it is handled on the server via the
ActionServlet which delegates to the associated FormBean and Action. The
Action invokes the business logic to process the data and update the model.
If there is an error, then control is forwarded to the JSP page which uses
the FormBean to repopulate the input fields and can also display the errors.

My question concerns the "output" side when there is no error. The JSP
displays information using tags and standard JSP features. If there is a
complex logic required to create the information for the JSP, where should
that logic be placed and invoked? Obviously business logic should be placed
in model beans, but what about the component that invokes the various bean
methods? This is the equivalent of the Action on the "input" side. Also,
what role if any should the FormBean play? This logic should not be in the
input Action because the JSP could be called from multiple Actions.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but I'm trying to make sure I understand the
framework before building larger apps.

That's the right URL. If you unzip the file, the source is under
jakarta-struts-1.0-src/src/share/

i.e. the source file for ActionServlet is

the big problem ive been having, coming from a WebObjects environment, is
that its not so easy to set up reusable components. for instance, one of
my components creates a table. another component builds on that and
creates a table of checkboxes. doing this in a taglib is impossible ( to

taglibs seem to be kind of one-shot deals: they render a font tag, an
image tag, a table tag, print out the value of a bean, etc. and thats it.
in one of the current projects im working on, we need to display search
results in a specific manner. however, there are at least 7 different

contain those name and state info and append it to the

-Original Message-
From: Jack Frosch [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

To: Struts Users Mailing List
Subject: Wondering About Struts...

Having only worked with Struts for a couple of months, I'm beginning to
wonder about the costs and benefits of using Struts, or any other JSP
tag
library, for that matter.

-- As I am sure you are aware, Struts is more than just a tag library...

At one level, it adds a great deal of support for maintaining session
state
and managing work flow in a web application. I really like being able
to
use a declarative approach to workflow; i.e. If this action is invoked,
go
to A. If it succeeds, go to B. If there's an error, go to C. Trying to
manage all the possibilities in code is a real headache. The Form
support
is also quite useful, especially with its validation and error reporting
mechanism.

-- This is a nice feature of Struts, but the 'workflow' is a tad
limited, which is why we created a scripting engine (using XML scripts)
that can be used behind Struts (only one Action need be used for most
cases).

However, I'm not sure about the value of many of the tags. The
literature
talks about how custom tags allow web developers and Java developers to
work
independently. It is said that, using custom tags, we can keep Java
code
out of web pages. Thus, Java developers don't have to learn HTML to
generate it in their code and web developers don't have to learn Java to
understand all those JSP code snippets.

-- This is a bit of a pipedream, but in some large organizations, it
does happen this way. Not all, but some.

However, it's my observation that a custom tag library becomes almost a
third language that neither web developers nor Java developers
understand.
So instead of forcing web developers to learn Java, or forcing Java
developers to learn HTML, custom tags force both groups of developers to
learn a unique semantics for a custom tag framework.

-- This is true too, but then again some web developers are more
comfortable working with XML tags, since it is so much like HTML tags. I
know a few of them. It could also be argued that there are few web
developers anymore who do not build dynamic pages of some sort, so
adding in scripting to a page is not all that difficult. Not really a
'correct' way to do things, but that's what happens.

Now, if a Java developer does learn HTML, s/he's added a skill with wide
application. If a web developer learns a bit of Java, s/he's added a
skill
with wide application. If both parties learn a custom tag API, they've
added a skill that's only useful with that particular custom tag API.
If
one goes to a different project using different custom tag libraries,
one
has to start learning a new custom tag API all over again.

-- Again, good points. One of our clients has more web developers than
Java developers, and thus anything that can be done without Java code is
better for them (this applies to any of the above statements as well).
However it should be noted that quite a few of the tags used by Struts
will made available outside of the Struts arena, namely into the Common
Taglibs. I don't necessarily agree with ALL of the tags that Struts
uses, but they are there if you want them. Most of them you don't HAVE
to use, but they make things easier, like the tags for example.
Personally, I don't use the tags unless it is needed. i.e. not every one
of my forms is built using Struts form tags. Only those that are going
to be prepopulated, or need to be validated use Struts forms (not all
forms need validation of course!).

Using tags can cause some overhead on the servlet engine, depending on
how it handles tags, so some load testing might be called for.

I'm not interested in starting some kind of religious war by this post.
I'm
just wondering how much the benefits outweigh the costs of using Struts
on a
project.

Jack

I think it's that the tag creates a button named submit which
overrides the submit method on the form.

If you look through the mail archive, this has come up a number of times.
The easiest solution is to rename your submit button as so:

Submit

RE: Wondering About Struts...

2002-01-22 Thread Regan, Patrick

Good point. I think one of the main advantages to Struts is the separation
of your presentation and business layer using the MVC pattern. This makes
changes to the presentation or business layers independent of each other.
Also, it cleans up your JSP pages immensely as you don't have java code
mixed in with HTML (this gets ugly and hard to maintain).

Your custom tag point is pretty good although I think it is a lot easier for
an HTML developer to learn a custom tag's HTML-like syntax than it is to
learn Java.

Subject: Wondering About Struts...

Having only worked with Struts for a couple of months, I'm beginning to
wonder about the costs and benefits of using Struts, or any other JSP tag
library, for that matter.

At one level, it adds a great deal of support for maintaining session state
and managing work flow in a web application. I really like being able to
use a declarative approach to workflow; i.e. If this action is invoked, go
to A. If it succeeds, go to B. If there's an error, go to C. Trying to
manage all the possibilities in code is a real headache. The Form support
is also quite useful, especially with its validation and error reporting
mechanism.

However, I'm not sure about the value of many of the tags. The literature
talks about how custom tags allow web developers and Java developers to work
independently. It is said that, using custom tags, we can keep Java code
out of web pages. Thus, Java developers don't have to learn HTML to
generate it in their code and web developers don't have to learn Java to
understand all those JSP code snippets.

However, it's my observation that a custom tag library becomes almost a
third language that neither web developers nor Java developers understand.
So instead of forcing web developers to learn Java, or forcing Java
developers to learn HTML, custom tags force both groups of developers to
learn a unique semantics for a custom tag framework.

Now, if a Java developer does learn HTML, s/he's added a skill with wide
application. If a web developer learns a bit of Java, s/he's added a skill
with wide application. If both parties learn a custom tag API, they've
added a skill that's only useful with that particular custom tag API. If
one goes to a different project using different custom tag libraries, one
has to start learning a new custom tag API all over again.

I'm not interested in starting some kind of religious war by this post. I'm
just wondering how much the benefits outweigh the costs of using Struts on a
project.

I'm glad you're bringing this up, since we're at a major decision point right now
concerning Struts and taglibs. I share your opinion, but I would like to know
more.

I would add that custom tag libs aren't simple to write, and in another thread
about large apps and Struts, people were saying that they might be slow. Since
it all compiles down to a servlet anyway, maybe a little bit of Java in there
isn't a problem.

Re: Wondering About Struts...

2002-01-22 Thread Ted Husted

Many people use Struts without using the custom tag libs. Struts itself
is primarily a front controller, the taglibs are provided as convenient
way to access the controller's "model" or "configuration".

The Actions hae full access to the request and response, and anything
else you can do with a Java Web application can be done there.

In Struts 1.1, we've added a ContextHelper object to make the
configuration available to more presentation systems. Velocity templates
and the JSTL for example. Eventually, the JSTL will a very positive
impact on using JSP tags in development. But that's still around the
bend.

In the meantime, there is a lot of good things to be said about
Velocity. The syntax is very light, but also very powerful. Most people,
especially page designers, can up and at it after only a few minutes. It
also works well from inside visual HTML editors. It's mature, and forms
the basis of most Turbine applications, including Jetspeed.

The Velocity team has come up with a toolkit and adapter that works with
Struts 1.0. This will really give you something to wonder about ...

Getting both options and selected from database.

2002-01-22 Thread Stephen Gissendaner

I have a pretty basic question that I think I know the answer to, but I want to be
sure.

1) How do you build a form based upon lists of options from a database and also handle
tracking the user's selections of those options at the same time.

For example:
In the database you have a list of color options that is built depending upon a model
number. Now say you use the Struts form tags to build a group of radio buttons. Now
when the user sees the form for that model they pick a color and submit the form. How
is the selected color identified when sent to the server? What if some other part of
the form is invalid and you need to re-display the form to the user and you want the
selected color preserved? What do you do if you need to re-present the filled out form
(complete with dynamic options) for editing at a later time?

To me you obviously do not want a separate JSP for each model. My current thinking is
that you would have to have 2 properties in your form bean for each occurrence of this
need. One property would be an array of the available options, and the other property
would be the actual selected item. I think this would work fine if you knew ahead of
time all of the occurrences.

I really appreciate any help you can give me.

we need it because ...

"SelectMethod={cursor | direct}. Determines whether or not Microsoft SQL
Server "server cursors" are used for SQL queries.
Setting SelectMethod to direct allows SQL statements to be executed without
incurring server-side overhead for managing a database cursor over the SQL
statement. Direct mode is the most efficient for executing Select
statements; however, applications are limited to a single active statement
while executing inside a transaction. If multiple result sets are required
from a single query execution, then the application must set SelectMethod to
direct.
Setting SelectMethod to cursor allows multiple active statements within a
transaction.
The default is direct." - Microsoft SQL Server 2000 JDBC Driver Help

RE: Velocity-Tools / Struts

2002-01-22 Thread Martin Farrell

hi

i have been looking at velocity periodically for a few months now, and
although i understand what it is trying to do (define a clearer separation
between controller and view) i felt that its big disadvantage was that it
introduced another language/syntax for a developer/designer to learn. In
view of this i decided to stay with struts, and occasionally resort to using
java scriptlets in my applications !-)

i would be interested in hearing other peoples opinions on this issue,
especially since struts can now integrate with velocity. i may be persuaded
to use velocity in my applications

thanks

Velocity is a view technology like JSP, so you would use it in the
exact same way you currently use your JSP templates. With Velocity your

html:radio: How To Set Radio Button Group?

2002-01-22 Thread Jack Frosch

I'm not quite sure how to use the tag.

In straight HTML, the name attribute is used to define a radio button group
so when one button is selected, the others are automatically deselected. In
Struts, the name attribute is used to specify the bean name in use (if any).

So now, I'm not sure how to cause a set of radio buttons to be part of the
same group. How is this done in Struts?

Thanks.

[ANNOUNCE] ObjectAssembler - Free Struts Development Tool

2002-01-22 Thread Bill Willis

Hello everyone,

We have just released a free version of our J2EE development environment,
ObjectAssembler Standard, that supports Struts applications. Here is a brief
description:

"ObjectAssembler Standard is focused on supporting developers whose sole
area of concern is developing Servlets, JSPs, JavaBeans and Struts
components. It provides a visual development and code synchronization
environment for the creation and assembly of these components into web
applications."

Here is the download page:

http://www.objectventure.com/products/objectassembler.html

Here is a Viewlet showing some of ObjectAssembler's features:

http://www.objectventure.com/demo/IntroStruts_viewlet.html

Please give it a try and tell us what you think. We are currently working on
our next major release that will provide J2EE 1.3 support. We also plan to
support Struts as it evolves (multi-app support, etc.), so any input we
receive would make that support even better.

RE: using struts for larger apps

2002-01-22 Thread Mark Galbreath

My dev team is using Struts for huge B2B and B2C applications. We are
finding the performance bottleneck is not Struts, it's the EJB 1.1 network
traffic. I expect once we upgrade to a 2.0-compliant app server and utilize
local interfaces that this problem will mitigate significantly.

Cheers!

Hi

I keep hearing that struts is only really suited for small to medium sized
applications. Are there plans in the future to expand the capabilities of
struts so it is suitable for developing large applications as well.

Thanks

Peter

Is this Struts implementation using EJBs as well? Congratulations on the
success of your site, the numbers you mention are quite an accomplishment.

Re: Option List Submit Question

2002-01-22 Thread Jonathan James

I think it's that the tag creates a button named submit which
overrides the submit method on the form.

If you look through the mail archive, this has come up a number of times.
The easiest solution is to rename your submit button as so:

Submit

Velocity is a view technology like JSP, so you would use it in the
exact same way you currently use your JSP templates. With Velocity your
example would like this:

 Employee Id
 Client Id

form tag in struts-html.tld and in struts-form.tld

2002-01-22 Thread olschmeltzer

Sorry if this question has already been addressed or is really low-level...
I am wondering what the difference is between these two taglib files : is
one deprecated ?
Why do they contain both for instance the definition of the tag form,
though refering to the same class (i.e.
org.apache.struts.taglib.html.FormTag) ?
I understand that struts.tld is deprecated ; this is clearly said inside
the file. But neither struts-html.tld nor struts-form.tld mentions being
deprecated.
Thanks for any help !

RE: Splitting ApplicationResource.properties

2002-01-22 Thread Becky Moyer

So, if I understand what everyone is telling me...

There is no way in Struts 1.0 to grab the existing MessageResources object
and add new messages.

To do this, I *think* that I'll have to extend MessageResources with my own
version of PropertyMessageResources that has some sort of an add method
which maybe lets me add new messages one at a time, or maybe lets me add a
whole Properties object.

Then I'll have to do a getServletContext().setAttribute(Action.MESSAGES_KEY,
application); to place the entire collection of messages back where any
 tag can get at them.

Essentially, I would prefer not to have to use the bundle property of the
message tag.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks,
Becky

Becky, it seems (although I haven't tried this) that you can do it through a
combination of:

1) using the bundle attribute of message -
http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/struts-bean.html#message

2) Initializing a different MessagesResource object:
 public static MessageResources messages =

MessageResources.getMessageResources("com.mycompany.mypackage.Messages");
(from
http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/api-1.0/org/apache/struts/util/package-summ
ary.html#doc.Messages)

Becky,
Attached is an extension of ActionServlet that I wrote which loads multiple
resource bundles based on a properties file that specifies everything to
load. This may not be exactly what you want, but it might give you some good
ideas -

Hope it helps -

So, from Martin Cooper's post at
http://www.mail-archive.com/struts-dev%40jakarta.apache.org/msg04548.html, I

gather that while there is an "apparent assumption that each application has

a single source of message resources" "in both Struts 1.0.x and the latest
code", I can infer there is a way around it??

The new "subapp" concept looks pretty cool. But does that mean you can
install subapps on the fly, while your servlet engine is running?

My ActionServlet has a set of pages that allow developers to upload an
almost-war file (that has a struts-config.xml but no web.xml file) and it's
read in and available immediately, all classes are loaded in... things are
put in set places. This allows new sections of the site to be added without

reloading tomcat.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I am still confused. With Struts
1.0,
can I add new messages without restarting (as I can add ActionMappings, etc,

without restarting)? I have been trying to look at the Struts code to see
how it's done now, and I am just not seeing a way I can add my messages.

Thanks for your reply,
 Becky

still the same problem--help needed---missing source code of some of the classesin struts

2002-01-22 Thread Amit Kumar

Thank you very much for such a quick response.Yes I have downloaded
everything again but again find the same classes missing :-(
The source code of all the files available in struts.jar is unavailable.
The reason I wanted to look into the code of
org.apache.struts.action.ActionServlet is I want to learn about Struts as
much as possible ,we are about to take off to design a B2B Ecommerce
application.
Decompilation of the classes is always possible , but I want to make sure
that this is the only option or that the currently available source version
is accidently missing the source files that I mentioned above.and also the
Struts is an open source project , it will be helpful to have all the source
code.

For a trial run what I did is as follows:
before starting tomcat I copied the following war files in webapps
1. struts-blank.war
2. struts-documentation.war
3.struts-example.war
4. struts-exercise-taglib.war
5. struts-template.war
6. struts-upload.war

on starting the tomcat as usual it unpacked the war files and the all the
applications are working perfectly alright.
But unfortunately the package org.apache.struts.action in source form is
nowhere to be seen.the only package that is available is
org.apache.struts.webapp.example.

Please let me know if I am missing something.and it will be a great help if
somebody can pointout where exactly the source files are put if at all the
ones that I am looking for.

I will be very much thankful if this issue gets resolved.

Thank you so much for the patience
Best regards

I recommend using the taglib from http://www.keyboardmonkey.com/struts
if I were you. This does not force you to use the "bleeding-edge" struts
version, but I think there's less chance that you'll encounter bugs than
if you would try this on an "on-the-fly" basis for your own webapp via
ActionForms (I tried both. The ActionForm way was *very* error-prone).

I mentioned the checkbox as an example. There aro other forms controls
for each iteration: 2 text inputs.

So, for each iteration I've got a checkbox and 2 input fields. The
number of iterations is variable (it's the number of records in the DB).
And I need a struts action to process them all.

Hope this helps.

Wim,

sure, that's what I have been doing. Only it seems that the same
problems occur if two apps have struts.jar in their WEB-INF/lib. Could
this be a problem with the Digester? The javadoc mentions that only one
digester can be used per thread.

Re: using struts for larger apps

2002-01-22 Thread John M. Corro

In relation to scaling issues, the only things I've heard resulted from
extensive use of taglibs. The problem manifests itself in two waysan
exception (forgot which one it is) being thrown due to the method being too
large (too much code resulting from too many taglibs). The other is that
the performance of the apps suffers due to all the taglibs being processed.

Ted or others more knowledgeable may want to correct me, but I think the
first problem is thrown from the ActionServlet...so yes it is a Struts
thing, but I think in general if you use too many taglibs (whether or not
you're using Struts) you get this problem anyways. I'm sketchy on this one
as I'm relying on other people's stories (haven't run into it myself), so
againI could be wrong on this one.

The second issue as I understand is more of an app server issue (too many
taglibs == slow performance). I've been hearing over and over from various
sources that most app servers don't process taglibs efficiently. So w/ that
being the case...again, no not a Struts caused issue.

advice on linking to help pages from Struts app

2002-01-22 Thread Rob Breeds

Hi

I need to link my Struts app to a separate help web site such that links in
my JSPs point to context-sensitive anchors in pages on the help site.

If I don't know the base location of the help site until runtime, I can't
put the locations in the mapping configuration file.

What would be the best way to generate links dynamically, given that I can
read the base location of help site at startup?

Thanks

Option List Submit Question

2002-01-22 Thread Regan, Patrick

I am converting a JSP page (model 1) to Struts. I have a JSP page that
contains a couple of option lists. When you choose an option from list 1,
the contents of option list 2 are filtered accordingly. The way I did this
on Model 1 was to resubmit the form and have the server repopulate the
option lists. In effect, the form could be submitted 2 ways. One if they
are filtering the option list and another when they are finished and want to
submit the transaction. With Struts I am having a problem using this
approach. I defined my first option list like this :

I also have a regular Submit button on the form. When I select an option
from the list, I get the following javascript error :

JavaScript Error: submit is not a function

If I comment out the Submit button, the option list submit works. Can
someone let me know how I can get this to work?

Thanks,
Patrick Regan

RE: getting validation errors on initial display of a form

2002-01-22 Thread Witt, Mike (OH35)

I'm pretty new to struts also, but here is what I've found:

If you set validate to true in the action mapping, the validation will
run before the action. If you set it to false, you may run the validate
method of the form yourself at any time. Also, it is interesting to note
that if you forward to a .jsp, it only runs the action the first time,
successive forwards to the jsp do not run the action. In order to run
the action, you usually want to forward to the action (/do/myAction).

In my situation, I had a form which I initially wanted to fill with data
for editing, and then take the data and update the database. To do
this, I set up one action with two action mappings. The first action
mapping was to load the data and the second to take the data and update
the database. The first action mapping, I set validate to false and
the second I set validate to true. I also used the param attribute of
the action within the struts config to set these differently depending
on the action (so that my servlet could tell which action I was doing.

Here is some sample stuff:

struts-config actions:

In my message_edit.jsp, I have:

I am new to Struts and am using Ted's sample logon app as my basis for
learning. His part works fine. I added a new jsp page that contains two
fields, created a form bean & an action form with validation edits. My
problem is that when I execute my form via
http://localhost:8080/starrd/app/names.do I get validation errors appearing
immediately (before I enter any data in the form). I can't believe thats
normal: I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Peter,

Don't listen to rumors! My experience is, that struts fits for large application as
well. We are developing an application with sturts, which will serve a few thousand
people. I'm not sure, but in my opinion this could be a large application ;-).

Hi

I keep hearing that struts is only really suited for small to medium sized
applications. Are there plans in the future to expand the capabilities of
struts so it is suitable for developing large applications as well.

Thanks

Re: "Back" button

2002-01-22 Thread T. Wheeler

It should be pretty easy:

1. On your JSP page, make a submit button that is named "back"

2. In your action class, have something like this near the top of your
perform() method:

if (request.getParameter("back") != null)
{
// redirect them to some previous page
}

Just make sure that, if you use the validate() method, you prevent
validation when they click the back button, like this:

validate()
{
if (request.getParameter("back") == null)
{
// do all of your validation; they didn't click "back"
}
}

HTW.

This is just a hint, not really tested myself..
If you can, try moving the from tag outside of any table definition.

double the apostrophe. I just ran into this problem (a few hours ago), and

1) is your database available outside your webapp - i.e. from a command
line or gui?
2) can you stub out a trivial class that tries to connect to the db
using your jdbc driver?

Don't you just love these non-informative exceptions?

Re: Struts DataSource times out; Poolman gives errors

I had a similar problem with Poolman. Turns out the version of mysql we
were using didn't support Transaction Isolation Levels (see your error
message). I switched to 3.23.46 and all was well. Also, mm.mysql-2.0.9
is now available from sourceforge. This may help clear up some or most
other bugs. Read the release notes for more info.

try google.com on jad (java decompiler)

Not that it is needed on struts ;o) but any .. sometimes handy if you dont want

getting validation errors on initial display of a form

2002-01-22 Thread Dick Starr

I am new to Struts and am using Ted's sample logon app as my basis for
learning. His part works fine. I added a new jsp page that contains two
fields, created a form bean & an action form with validation edits. My
problem is that when I execute my form via
http://localhost:8080/starrd/app/names.do I get validation errors appearing
immediately (before I enter any data in the form). I can't believe thats
normal: I must be doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Here's the pertinent parts of SANameAction.java:

public final class SANameAction extends Action

  servlet.log(message.toString());
}

// Forward control to the welcome URI

return (mapping.findForward(SAConstants.WELCOME));
  }

} // End SANameAction

Here's the pertinent parts of SANameForm.java:

public final class SANameForm extends ActionForm

When I first execute the form via http://localhost:8080/starrd/app/names.do

Tomcat will be able to find struts in that same directory.. I don't know
if this linkage is made is the class files.. not that many a java-expert ;o)

A sample compile.sh from my sample app:
CLASSPATH="$JBOSS_DIST/client/jboss-j2ee.jar:/usr/local/JBoss-2.4.4_Tomcat-4.0.1
/catalina/common/lib/servlet.jar:/usr/local/jdk1.3.1_02/lib/tools.jar:./WEB-INF/
lib/struts.jar"

javac -classpath $CLASSPATH WEB-INF/classes/nl/kern/j2ee/sample/struts/*.java
WEB-INF/classes/org/jboss/docs/cmp/cd/interfaces/*.java

jar cf cdexample.war WEB-INF/ *.jsp *.html

cp cdexample.war $JBOSS_DIST/deploy

as you can see, I specify my j2ee jar (for my EJB backend), the servlet jar from
catalina, my j2se jar and my struts.jar from the WEB-INF/lib

Re: Netscape 4.7 Adding Port Number after calling Action

It looks like the problem arises from the use of the response.SendRedirect
method. The application server that I am using (SilverStream) automatically
appends the port number to the url string when calling this method.
Unfortunately, Netscape 4.7 does not handle this well. I changed my
ActionMappings to forward instead of redirect and this fixed the problem.

Apparently, WebLogic has a fix for this Netscape bugthey provided a
configuration switch that can be used to determine whether or not to append
the port number. I am checking with SilverStream about such a workaround
with their product.

Re: Velocity-Tools / Struts

2002-01-22 Thread Arron

Do you mean, serve a form in Velocity and have Struts interpret it?...

From what I know (FWIK? :) Velocity is more of a "view" system. You can
use Velocity and Struts at the same time, using Velocity as the "view"
system in the Struts MVC paradigm.

They're alsmost complementary in a way, and a few people are putting
some effort into getting them married in an elegant fashion.

Other mails in this list have focused on resources for this, so have a
search around.

Are you aware that you should NOT put struts in the classpath of your
webserver/appserver?

put struts.jar in the WEB-INF/lib and include that path on compiling.

Re: Velocity-Tools / Struts

2002-01-22 Thread Will Spies/Towers Perrin

I mean your example *displays* an array. Let's say I change your example
and instead of displaying an array I want to *edit* all elements in the
array and post the results up to struts. Here is a JSP struts example of
what we do:

 Employee Id
 Client Id
 Work Zip Code
 Mail code
 Delete

  <%EmploymentForm empForm=(EmploymentForm)request.getAttribute
("employmentForm");%>
  <%for (int i=0; i < empForm.getData().getRows().length;i++) {%>

  <%}%>

We go outside the struts tags here because in the 1.0 version the iterate
tag does not do this properly ( but the struts engine does ). Note in the
above how elements are generated as index ( [n] ) elements. The
ActionForm's would contain indexed properties in order for this to work.

What would the velocity equivalent of the above look like?

Yes, that can be done currently with 1.0 or 1.0.1 using the multibox tag.
Look through the archive and at the docs for multibox. If you still need

Subject: Indexed Properties

Hello, folks. I'm currently using Struts 1.0.1 and was wondering if
there is a way to use indexed properties in ActionForm classes.

I know there is support for this in HEAD, but I'm coding an
enterprise-critical application and I hope not to use 'bleeding edge'
components.

I'll give an example of my need: I have a form dinamically generated
using that contains a checkbox for each iteration. Now I
need an action to process the whole form. As of now, the Action is
defined as having no associated ActionForm, and the perform() method
usess request.getParameterValues() calls to get the form values. There
is a way to do this using ActionForms?

Can an expert help? [ was: Weird error message ]

2002-01-22 Thread Ben Peter

Jorge,

I have experienced the same (and other problems) when trying to run more
than one struts application in one container.

The setup which caused the problems was
Struts 1.0.1 and
Tomcat 4.0.1

When trying to run both the struts-example.war and struts-blank.war,
everything was still ok, but as soon as the struts-blank application is
using anything from struts (e.g. struts taglibs), it will come up with
errors of all sorts which all look like there is a problem with
initialisation of the second application.

Is this a known issue, and can someone who has more insight give an
input on that? Is there anything basically wrong with running two struts
applications in one container?

It seems that the warnings against putting struts.jar into the classpath
apply here too.

Cheers,
Ben
