hi jan, perhaps you must change the sturcuture of build.xml in my case: i copied jsf-1.0 beta in to $jwsdp.home and copied some specified lib into $jwsdp.home too. e.g. jsp-api, servlet-api of course i copied jsf-libs and jstl-libs to WEB-INF/lib of example2 now tomcat started them up... and perhaps you must change your user-name/password for tomcat! :-) try this... greetings matthias -Original Message- From: Jan Dirksen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2004 10:02 AM To: Struts Users Mailing List Subject: Re: JavaServer Faces 1.0 -- Proposed Final Draft Spec and Beta Reference Implementation Hi Craig, i just want to try the struts-faces examples. but i got compilation-error. is there something i need...? jwsdp-1.3 is on my box. thanks --- Craig R. Implementing collection of HTML controls
Hi, I have a collection (of type java.util.List) which I am passing to the jsp page as a bean. Each element of this collection represents an HTML control (radio/select etc.) that I need to show on the page. One of the attributes for these elements is the control name. I am using logic:iterate tag to iterate through the collection. Q is how can I assign the name to a control ? I know it is possible to assign a different name to each control using the indexed attribute. However this does not work as I have logic:iterate loop inside in the outer logic:iterate loop to implement the radio button options. [For each radio button element I have to again iterate through a collection of possible options for that radio button.] Thanks in advance Anindito - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

snip I dont know what an IDE is - I'm quite new to struts and programming. I am just using a command prompt to compile - which is what was written in the book I am following to learn. /snip Me thinks you may be starting a little at the deep end in that case. You would probably do better to get comfortable writing simple applications in java before you get into the more complex stuff (such as servlets and frameworks etc...). An IDE is an integrated development environment. A very good ( free) one is Eclipse. (www.eclipse.org) If your just starting out with Java then its good to learn to code without an IDE first to get a feel for whats going on and how all the classpath stuff works (as your discovering, it can be quite troublesome at times!!!), but once your past the learning stage and writing real programs you will find an IDE very helpful and a big time saver. Re: error
Good man I hate IDE's (well xcode is okay but its not really an ide in same way as all that eclipse nonsense).. Something you will need is ant or even make to build your project. I get the impression that you're compiling using javac and adding the classes to your class path. If you look through the tomcat docs there's an example project using ant. http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/appdev/index.html This will take a few hours and you'll need to install ant, feel free to post me off the list if you want a hand with this as its not really a struts question Cheers Mark On 6 Jan 2004, at 13:28, Nasrin Hafezparast wrote: Thanks for your reply. Just want to know if someone knows how to customize the templates for Actions and ActionForms, which are created by WSAD, when i add a new action in the struts-config.xml. As i now use Struts 1.2 Nightly Build, i get these annoying deprecated warnings for e.g. ActionErrors, ActionError ... Calendar control in Struts???

RE: Calendar control in Struts???
Without javascript your choices are quite limited. Your best bet is to just have a text entry box and a visible hint to the user of the appropriate format to enter the date and reject invalid input. (In fact if your UI has a lot of data entry to do this is the friendliest choice for 'power' users...) Another potential choice is to have 3 select fields for day month and year. (You will of course need to validate that they dont choose things like 31 Feb etc...). Not much you can do beyond that without using javascript though. The lack of proper Numeric and Date fields is very much a glaring ommission in html. (Esp numeric fields!). Fingers crossed that xforms will catch on! sigh/ -Original Message- From: Vimaljebaraj Gnanarajnelson , Tidel Park - Chennai [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:00 To: Struts Users Mailing List Subject: Calendar control in Struts??? RE: Warning: Page has Expired
Only providing your own navigation links should not be considered enough. Many users like to use the back and forward buttons of their browsers and will become very frustrated when they see this Warning: page has expired message. You can configure your controller and set the nocache attribute of the controller tag in the struts-config.xml file to false... .. something like controller nocache=false / Hope this helps... it did for me. Re: struts help using logic:iterate
Hien, Thank you for replying to my message. I will try this way. Since I'm new on Struts, I thought there would be some other tag other than logic:iterate tag to do the trick. Btw, I'm running weblogic 7.0 sp4. Do you know if it supports JSTL? If you make your Item class returns an Error object, you can avoid the errorCodeList, something like this: public class Item { private int id=0; private MyError error; /** * @return Returns the error. */ public MyError getError() { return error; } /** * @param error The error to set. */ public void setError(MyError error) { this.error = error; } /** * @return Returns the id. */ public int getId() { return id; } /** * @param id The id to set. */ public void setId(int id) { this.id = id; } /** * @param id */ public Item(int id) { super(); this.id = id; } } assume that you have MyError class defined as a JavaBean with two properties errorCode (int) and errorString (String). in your jsp: % java.util.Collection itemList = new java.util.ArrayList(); hqn.Item item1 = new hqn.Item(1); item1.setError( new hqn.MyError(1, Error Description 1) ); itemList.add( item1 ); hqn.Item item2 = new hqn.Item(2); item2.setError( new hqn.MyError(2, Error Description 2) ); request.setAttribute(itemList, itemList ); % Using JSTL forEach tag: c:forEach items=${itemList} var=item Item ID= c:out value=${item.id}/BR Error Code: c:out value=${item.error.errorCode}/BR Error Desc: c:out value=${item.error.errorString}/BR /c:forEach Using logic:iterate tag: logic:iterate id=item name=itemList Item Id= bean:write name=item property=id/BR bean:define id=error name=item property=error/ Error Code: bean:write name=error property=errorCode/BR Error Desc: bean:write name=error property=errorString/BR /logic:iterate I'd recommend you to use JSTL. --hqn On Jan 5, 2004, at 4:39 PM, ngonqua wrote: I'm very new to struts so please be kindly. Re: error
While I agree that there's quite a lot of ground to cover I think if java/jsp is a serious alternative to other web based technologies then there needs to be a way of introducing new folks to these technologies by getting things up and running and then start to learn stuff. Post me off the list Nasrin if you need to get up and running. Seeing you've a academic email address I assume you've done some programming perhaps a bit of c or something, make as your build tool and/or familiar with the likes of perl. If you're running windows then there's an Ant installer for windows users who are generally used to double clicking on stuff without to much cognition mediating the installation process. Then you'll want to get the sample project in the tomcat documentation built with ant. This will let you put all the classpaths in an xml file and make life much simpler. I assume you've installed tomcat or another container so I wont mention that. But if i'm wrong then just say so. RE: Calendar control in Struts???
Is it that you do not want JavaScript in the resulting HTML page that gets rendered? Or that you simply don't want to write JavaScript code yourself? I found a really nice pop-up calendar widget that is a tag library, so you don't have to write code. But it does render JavaScript in the resulting page to make it all work. It is a taglib written around the JavaScript Toolbox. (http://www.mattkruse.com/javascript/calendarpopup/ ) Google for the taglib. -Original Message- From: Vimaljebaraj Gnanarajnelson , Tidel Park - Chennai [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2004 10:30 AM To: Struts Users Mailing List Subject: RE: Calendar control in Struts??? -yes, it is . rite now I am using js. Re: Mix protocols transparently in Struts
Hi Alain. I have today exactly the same problem and founded the same solution calles Struts SSL Switching Extension hosted at sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sslext/ This solution is from the same author so you don't have to copy and paste the code snibbles ;-). My first evaluation says: The solution may not adapted to the Struts 1.1 environment, it runs for 1.0 and 1.1 too. But in further version you have to make some changes. The configuration of the action-mapping is no longer described in the web.xml but in the struts-config.xml. OLD web.xml: servlet id=Servlet_1 ... init-param param-namemapping/param-name param-valueorg.apache.struts.action.SecureActionMapping/param-value /init-param /servlet NEW struts-config.xml action-mappings type=org.apache.struts.action.SecureActionMapping action /action /action-mappings So you define a new action-mapping class for doing the mapping. regards Manfred Wolff Alain Van Vyve wrote: I would like to mix HTTP et HTTPS ... server hangs after finite number of requests
Hi all, If I submit the same page more than 8 times, my server dies and I have to restart. For example, the first 8 times I enter the wrong password, struts will simply return me to my original form with an error message. However, the 9th time - the server hangs. This also occurs if I enter the correct password, then press the back button and return to the original login screen and submit again. I can only repeat this 8 times. The server hangs on the 9th try. I am using: tomcat 4.1.12 httpd 2.0.43 mysql 3.23.53 struts 1.1 I am not even sure if this is a struts problem. I suspect it is because I tried that back button trick with a plain old servlet, and I was able to do it more than 9 times. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Quoting Jan Dirksen [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi Craig, i just want to try the struts-faces examples. but i got compilation-error. is there something i need...? jwsdp-1.3 is on my box. Without knowing the details of your error messages, it's pretty difficult to tell exactly what is going on, but most compilation problems are caused by not setting up a build.properties file correctly. The simplest way to do that is to copy build.properties.sample to build.properties and modify the settings as needed. On the other hand, to simply execute the examples, you don't need to compile at all -- just follow the instructions in the README.txt file to add jsf-api.jar and jsf-impl.jar to the web application, and deploy it like any other. (You'll also have to remove the EA release of JavaServer Faces from JWSDP since the current code uses the beta release). thanks Craig - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've had my share of grief with 4.1, and always use 5.0 now. There are some potential workarounds to 4.1 problems listed on the JavaServer Faces release notes and web pages. One thing to note with *any* standalone Tomcat usage is that JavaServer Faces is not built in the way it is with JWSDP, so you'll need to include all the needed JAR files in your /WEB-INF/lib directory. Don't even bother to try to install JavaServer Faces into common/lib on Tomcat 4.1 -- it flat won't work. One thing to note with *any* standalone Tomcat usage is that JavaServer Faces is not built in the way it is with JWSDP, so you'll need to include all the needed JAR files in your /WEB-INF/lib directory. Please post your program if possible. It looks like you are missing the import statements. If you are using any type of IDE, it usually has an option like organize imports, if you are just using a text editor, then make sure to declare those import statements. Re: Its Safe to use the Action.ERROR_KEY ?
Sort of. If it changes *and* you recompile, then you'll get the new value. That's one of the fun things about compile-time constants (static final), they're essentially inlined. I imagine it's highly unlikely to change, however. P.S. Action.ERROR_KEY has been deprecated in favor of Globals.ERROR_KEY. Displaying messages as a result of failure
Hi all How do I present, to the user, customized messages in the case of an Action failure? For example, say a user fills and submits a form. The form gets validated, and control is passed onto the Action. From within the action, we have a success and failure forward. In the case of a failure, I forward the user back to the same page. What I'd like to do now, however, is to print out a customized message on this page, explaining what the problem was. I realize that this is a rather simple question... so please go easy on me! setting nested form values
Has anyone else had any problems setting nested bean values Here's and example of what i mean.. public class DemoForm extends ActionForm { private ArrayList beanList; public DemoForm() { this.beanList = new ArrayList(); } public Object[] getBeans() { return beanList.toArray() } public void setBeans(ArrayList beanList) { this.beanList = beanList; } public NestedBean getBean(int i) { NestedBean bean = (NestedBean) beanList.get(i); return bean; } //and so on } .. public class NestedBean { private String foo; public String getFoo() { return foo; } public void setFoo(String foo) { this.foo = foo; } } .. c:forEach var=bean items=${myForm.beans} html:text name=bean property=foo indexed=true / /c:forEach The problem comes when i change values in the form element the values dont change so i guess the jsp and the servlets aren't interacting. I work around by retrieving form the parameter map String target = bean[+ i +].foo; String value = request.getParameter(target).toString(); This works okay , but I'd really like to know wether i can do this without this hack. I've had something like that happen when I call getDataSource(request).getConnection() and forget to close them. After a finite number of requests, the server appears to hang. RE: Need some Multibox help.
You most-definitely need to instantiate a bean named feature. The reason it Cannot find bean feature in any scope is because there is no bean named feature in any scope. In a real-world application, you would probably do this in an action via getSession().setAttribute(feature, new Feature(...)) or request.setAttribute(...). It could be the form bean wfsContentForm or it's features property doesn't exist at the time you call the logic:iterate tag. Do you have your logic:iterate tag inside a html:form tag and defined the approprite mappings in struts-config?, the wfsContentForm bean will be created if yes. Problem With Passing Properties of DynaValidatorForm to the Business Tier
Hi, my program compiled OKay. When I ran the application, somehow, the properties of my DynaValidatorForm are not passed from the action class to the business tier and then to the data access tier. Please help me taking a look at what went wrong. It looks that the validation worked fine: form-bean name=postForm type=org.apache.struts.validator.DynaValidatorForm form-property name=receiver type=java.lang.String/ form-property name=sender type=java.lang.String/ . . /form-bean because when I intentionally left several of the text fields blank and submitted my JSP form, an applet got prompted showing something in those fields are required. In my action class (see below), I used BeanUtils to copy all the properties of the DynaValidatorForm to a bean (ThreadBean): DynaActionForm postForm = ( DynaActionForm )form; ThreadBean threadBean = new ThreadBean(); BeanUtils.copyProperties( threadBean, postForm ); I then added a number of properties with pre-defined values to the ThreadBean in the Action class: Timestamp now = DateUtil.getCurrentGMTTimestamp(); threadBean.setThreadCreationDate( now ); threadBean.setThreadViewCount( 0 ); I then called a method in a service class ThreadHandler and passing threadBean as the parameter of that method: ThreadHandler thandler = new ThreadHandler(); threadID = thandler.insertThread( threadBean ); In the ThreadHandler class, I first tried to get the values of those properties out of the ThreadBean. It looked to me that the values of those properties are not retrieved and passed to the data access tier. class ThreadHandler extends ThreadBean { int threadID = getThreadID(); String receiver = getReceiver(); String sender = getSender(); Timestamp threadCreationDate = getThreadCreationDate(); int threadViewCount = getThreadViewCount(); public ThreadHandler() {} MessageDAO md = new MySQLMessageDAO(); public int insertThread( ThreadBean threadBean ) throws MessageDAOSysException, ObjectNotFoundException { md.createThread( receiver, sender, threadCreationDate, readViewCount ); . . return threadID; } } __ Do you Yahoo!? How to show action errors on the JSP pages
Hi All, I am raisinng an action error through the action class and added the entry to the resource file(properties file). But to use the html:errors tag do I need to explicitly include the tld file. As I can see that file is part of the struts.jar. However when I include this it conflicts with the dtd for the servlet 2.3 as I also need to use the servlet filter. Any pointers in this direction will be useful. I can see the error description when I include the tld in the jsp but then it conflictrs with the servlet 2.3 dtd(which I require for filter). Re: server hangs after finite number of requests
That's very good advice. Another good thing to do is unplug the cable to your network card during development to see what your application does under those circumstances. We use licensed database in our office, and I found all kinds of great bugs by installing a single user license on the development environment. Sometimes they pop up when you'd least expect. I don't really know where it is coming from. I would like to know what is generating the above, so I could to in and modify the logging statements to produce a bit more detail! I also have log4j statements in my own code and have been testing this. But I can't generate any error or anything beyond the normal output, 8 times. What is interesting is that it always fails on the 9th try. I don't think it is a matter of seconds either. I have tested over a longer period (10 minutes), but it still gives me 8 requests before it hangs. And Geeta Ramani - thanks. I will take another look at the jdbc stuff! [OT] Shifting Resources
I'd like to share with the Strut's community my response to an editorial in the January 5, 2004 issue of InfoWorld: Ephraim, As a Java developer who believes that designing systems and writing code is an artistic endeavor, I found your recent editorial (Shifting Resources) to be very interesting; however, you missed a major point. Software developers should not feel threatened by the possibility of outsourcing to third world nations. The relatively low-level functions that these technology sweatshops provide will soon be automated out of existence by the next generation of software development tools. Developers who have low-level skills and fail to master the new development tools will be obsolete, no matter where they live. The next generation of tools will significantly increase the productivity of developers through the implementation of attribute oriented programming. We will be able to go from a detailed designed specification to system implementation with very few key stokes for coding in between. Software designers will specify the attributes of the system, the tools will generate the code. We are already seeing the emergence of these tools from both the corporate (IBM/Rational's model driven development, Sun's Project Rave, and others) and open source (xDoclet most significantly) communities. At present, software development is on the same level as the automobile industry was in the 1890s when teams of engineers individually crafted specialty systems using a limited set of tools. As the power of development tools increases, exponential gains in productivity will be realized. Your editorial was correct in stressing the importance of design and management (getting the attributes of the system correct is the essential first step). In every industry, design is where the greatest value is added. Your editorial was incorrect in predicting an increase in outsourcing. The low-level keyboarding monkey jobs are going, but they are not going overseas, they're just going away. The great danger in the near future will be that companies will be misguided by pinhead MBAs who can not see beyond the bottom line at the end of the next quarter. Companies that attempt to slash costs by turning to outsourcing will be at a disadvantage when competing against companies that invest in software designers who have mastered the latest generation of leading edge tools. Tiles with XML and XSL
Hi, I am wondering if anybody here has mulled over the idea of using XML and XSL with Tiles. Right now I have a great application that makes use of Struts 1.1 with a role based layout using Tiles. It uses the common layout we see everywhere, header, dynamic menu, footer and of course body. I started thinking that it would be nice to put all the content of the body tile into an XML file. Just the content though. Including forms and buttons might not be a good idea at this stage. Simpler would be better as my team is still learning to be proficient with Struts. Googled of course and did not find much. The two approaches I am considering are, 1) Change the reference in the tile definition of body=myContent.jsp to a kind of composition servlet which recieves as paramaters, the xml and xslt file to output as html (with this approach I would have to include the forms and buttons). 2) Make a reference to my xml and xslt server side using a custom tag in the jsp page. 3) Figure out a way to render this client side relying on the browser. Any thoughts or links to resources would be greatly appreciated. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm able to send error messages to my jsp whenever needed. but how to i send confirmation messages (for instance Your mail has been sent) ? is there a way similar to the ActionErrors method? thanks Otávio Augusto - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: messages
An easy way would be to have a field in the JSP that corresponds to a field in your ActionForm. The you just put your message into the form field. For instance I often display debugging information using a hidden field and I set write=true when I want to debug eg I am running database queries and the record's id is not displayed on the JSP but I can display it for debugging with a line like: html-el:hidden property=id value=${requestScope.myForm.id} write=true/ You could do something similar, and if you stick to using the form in this way you won't have messy parameters on the request. I just use ActionErrors for everything but I am guessing that it is html:errors for errors and html:messages for messages. Re: dynamically add action ?
li xin. In my opinion it is no problem to add a jsp-file to a struts application at runtime. For this you don't need to restart the server. Changing the configuration at run time is not possible with the current implementation of struts. After a module is initialized the ActionServlet-class freezes the configuration. Before that you can add configurations such as actions, forwards etc. with the plug-in mechanism, because the init() method of the plugin has full access to the ModuleConfig. You can override the ActionServlet Methode init() and don't freeze the moduleConfig. In this case you have the possibility to add actions and forwards to the configuration at run time. Re: dynamically add action ?
Thanks ! I am very new to this web application world, just wanted to clarify if I can do these in a running Struts application without restart Tomcat: 1. Can I modify existing JSP files ? Yes, I have tried 2. Can I add new JSP files into existing folder ? I think so. 3. Can I create new folders for some new JSP files ? 4. Can I add new java class into an existing folder ? 5. Can I create a new folder for some new Java classes ? thanks li xin --- Manfred Wolff [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: li xin.
