NASS Conference
The annual conference of the North American Sundial Society will be held June 8-11 this year in Ann Arbor MI (25 minute ride from the Detroit airport). The conference features a day and a half of interesting talks on sundials, a full day bus tour of local dials, a visit to an observatory, and announcement of this year's recipient of the Sawyer Dialing Prize. This year we mark 30 years of NASS and a century of the bifilar sundial. FW: NASS Conference
Hi there, As a brand new member of NASS I was delighted with the reception I got at the recent conference in Portland. The tour was first rate, the talks were interesting, and the camaraderie was wonderful. At this point I am just a little more than an observer, and I was thoroughly impressed by being accepted into such august company. I really appreciated the sharing of info and techniques, and I was quite blown away by the near infinite range of types and style of dials. I would especially like to thank Fred Sawyer and John Schilke for putting the conference together, Colby Lamb and Rob and Julie Brown for showing their work, and Gino Schiavone for the personalized pocket dial and Tom Kreyche for the personalized disks with sun information on them. And, wow, a complete flash drive with scads of information on it. Wunnerful, wunnerful. The Friday tour, unfortunately was cloudy, but I took my grandson out to Marylhurst on Wednesday and, along with Jan Dabrowski, we became gnomons for the great analemmatic sundial. It looked to me like it was right on. We also caught a good shadow at Reed College, shortly before noon. I tried to attach photos but it made the message too big. I was not aware of the 50KB limit. The photos on the flickr channel started by John Carmichael. I will also have an album on Facebook and possibly SmugMug. I will also make a personal list of all whose e-mail addresses I have, so that attachments will go through. http://www.flickr.com/groups/1240...@n22/ You are the most giving bunch of people I know and I am proud to be associated with you. Sun Compass from the 2002 NASS conference
Hello there, I am a researcher studying the use of sun compasses during World War II in the N. African desert, and due to a Google search, drifted in to page displaying the 2002 NASS International conference. http://sundials.org/conference/2002/2002conf.htm Does anyone know more about the analemmatic sun compass displayed by Bill Walton, and pictured about halfway down the page. This looks remarkably similar to the Abrams and Cole sun compass used by the US and British military, but I can't tell if Mr. Walton glued a print-off onto some foam board, or purchased it from a vendor. Can anyone help me contact Mr. Walton, or forward my query? --- https://lists.uni-koeln.de/mailman/listinfo/sundial

NASS Conference Vancouver
Hi all, Mike Shaw, Geoff Parsons and I of BSS are newly returned from the NASS Conference in Vancouver where we spent a few days exploring many interesting things before the conference began. My webmaster and old schoolfriend Geoff Anderson entertained us for one day with an expedition to White Rock on the coast where we found an accurate sundial in front of the old station building on the seashore before a ceremonial dipping of fingers in the Pacific Ocean. The dial passes all of Mike's tests for a working sundial and appears to have been cast, complete with gnomon, in one piece in stainless steel. We three have more detailed pictures to be seen in due course. Geoff (Anderson) has produced a small web page of pictures showing us gathered around the dial and also what BSS members get up to when abroad. Why not make a visit to a NASS Conference an excuse for a first visit to North America? Having the Adler Planetarium as a backdrop, and for our conference dinner was a bonus, and Chicago is certainly a "wow" city. I am delighted to be able to tell you that the Sawyer Dialing Prize this year went to our very own Tony Moss,a regular contributor to the list. The citation reads: "In recognition of his achievement in combining superb craftsmanship, a lifetime's teaching experience and a constant desire to share knowledge, methods and techniques in the practical art of dialing". His award took the form of one of Jim Tallman's glass dials. I can't tell you how pleased I am that he received such recognition. Mike Shaw 53.37 North03.02 West www.wiz.to/sundials
Re: How was the Nass Conference?
Hi John, We missed you at the conference. We all hope you are recovering well. The loop location of De Paul University was nice to the Chicago sights but can be expensive at some of the hotels. ( what big city isn't?) The presentations were informative and interesting.I appreciated how several presenters made "history" interesting to me. Steve Luecking was a great host - with one workshop in Grant Park and access to computers for a touch of CAD -- and plenty of food. The NASS workshops were a good addition. It has sparked my interest in 3D CAD. I do feel a little better grasp of spherical geometry also. As I recall you started the workshop concept with your stained glass workshop. Navy Pier has a free permanent exhibit on stained glass. No dials, but about 60-80 pieces on display. Next year the NASS conference is the same weekend at Vancouver Canada. Vancouver Island or city - I don't know which or both. I wonder if there are there any dials in Buchard Gardens. Congratulations to Tony Moss for the Sawyer award. He has made many contributions to this list and to the fine art of dial construction. Warren, and all interested, please feel free to download two or three things from my web site with respect to 3d CAD. The links are on the main web page. www.illustratingshadows.com Durer and CAD Calculating Shadows TCW and some DXF downloadable files All have been expanded in the last month or two. The first is the use of CAD applied to Durer's model, with examples of solar rays on the globe. The second expands on CAD as in Steve Luecking's work, and the thiord are some examples using TurboCAD release 9.1 and release 11, and some general DXF files. They show CAD in the light of better instruction/understanding, as well as in actual design. Thanks Simon --- Warren Thom [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi John, We missed you at the conference. Thanks to all who wrote to tell me about the Nass Conference. It sounds like it was well done as usual. And I'm so glad Tony got the Sawyer Dialing Prize since he's been such a great help to all of us over the years. I'm also happy to hear that the idea of workshops at the conferences is becoming popular. I think that most of the attendees love learning about the practical aspects of dial design and construction. Thespinal surgeryseems like it was successful but I have to take it easy for a few weeks. At least all the pain is gone from my right arm and hand. and I'm getting some strength back. The Docand nurse Ratchet only allow me to work on the computer for twenty minutes at a time. If you were an attendee I would also appreciate photos of the display tables. Scanned photos via email would be preferred, but the postal service is acceptable. Please include a SASE if you wish them returned. PLEASE address any email correspondence to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or use the Webmaster email link on the site. The CompuServe address I use for this list is ungainly. Robert Terwilliger 2963 Bird Avenue Coconut Grove FL 33133-4501
NASS Conference
To all that have that have not made their reservations yet. I found that Hilton Hartford offers a rate called the Bounceback for $79, $10 less than the conference rate. Only catch is you can't specify a bed type. You get what they have. ++ron

Re: NASS Conference
Hello Dialist, I have been looking forward to reading comments about the NASS meeting on this mail list. I have quoted the announcement to see any reactions. I enjoyed the weekend very much. The variety was good. It included interesting history, solutions to design and dial building problems, and a lot of interesting people. The rain was disappointing but my pictures came out better than expected. The shareware computer program The Dialist Companion has been a new toy along with the any latitude dial. I estimated the moment of winter to be December 21 at 7:52:16 CST with the computer companion. I have also produced the Foster Dial with the world map that was in the last issue of the Compendium (3-3). It came out pretty neat. I want to enlarge it and mount it. Cheers, Warren Frederick W.
