1. When I start freenet, is it supposed to hide my ip address? When I

2. Does freenet encrypt and hide my traffic from my ISP?

3. Does freenet cover every application on my machine, or only the web
browser window it runs in?

4. Is freenet blockable by my ISP?

Thank you very much.

After sending my first answer, I read what Bert Massop wrote… 100% correct!

And I will add about 4. that yes, but as he said, it would be very hard…
A way to obtain this, would be to use Freenet inside a VPN, since a VPN
hides all your traffic _from your machine__,_ and so, ISP can't know
what you are doing.

Hello Freenet Project,

I was wondering if you could help me with an issue that I am having
when trying to install freenet for OSX Mavericks. Whenever I have
tried to launch the freenet project it runs for around 5-10 seconds
before closing, but still when I try to connect to the freenet my
browser says i'm not able to connect. I have only been able to connect
to the freenet for about 2 seconds after I first installed it and it
auto-ran but soon refreshed and closed.

When I attempt to run the project through the command line link in the
Freenet Application Directory called /StartFreenet.Command/ it
displays this:

/Applications/Freenet/StartFreenet.command ; exit;Your JAVA_HOME seems
to be incompatible with your PATH, ignoring it./

/Your java executable at /usr/bin/java seems suitable/

/sed: 1: "/Applications/Freenet/w ...": invalid command code F/

/Starting Freenet 0.7.../

/logout/

/[Process completed]/

Also when performing the installation I saw an error saying something
similar to /invalid command code F/ as well.

I really love the whole idea of the Freenet Project and would love to
use it but these issues are preventing me from doing so, help would be
greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Callum

Hi,

For what the command is concerned, and since the rabbit is still in no
working order yet, I'm always using those (since Lion, years ago, till
today El capitan):

cd //[path]/Freenet (Freenet directory)

./run.sh start

./run.sh stop
And as for java, sometimes there is this message (wrong anyway), and it
may work inspite of it… there is somewhere the solution to it… not too
sure of what it is though… perhaps to install it from the *freenet jnlp*…

good luck

Hi,
Well since quite a few versions the wabbit doesn't indeed work very well
I'm affraid…

But you can almost just as easily start freenet with Terminal :

_*To start*_ :
If you are not very much accointed with the path,
just slide freenet folder to the terminal after the _first part_ of the
command (*cd //*),

and it'll fill automatically. then you hit return.
The surest way for the commandsis to copy/paste them to be sure of making
no mistake, in adding or forgetting some spaces.

cd ///[//…//the path to Freenet//…//]//Freenet
Hit return

./run.sh start
Hit return

_*and to stop it*_:

cd //[…/the path to Freenet/…]/Freenet
Hit return

./run.sh stop
Hit return

A good way to verify it’s working is to look in Little Snitch monitor,
and you should see :
« java.freenet.NodeStarter » appearing, and a lot of urls succeeding one
after the

other on the right of that window.

Good luck!

Hi,
Normally, on os x, you could install this wherever you whish.
For many years, I even had it installed on an external disc.

By default though, it installs itself into your Home directory, but it's
invisible.

So, one needs for instance "Invisiblix" to see it.
It is ofcourse always possible to makesomewhere an alias that stays visible.
If in need of high security though, you can put this alias with other
sensible stuff in a sparse bundle

or sparse image, protected with a PW.

You seem to be running Freenet without the wrapper. This is not
recommended. Also, you have changed your advanced configuration settings
where you definitely shouldn't have, since you seem to have no idea what

1. Uninstall Freenet.
2. Download the latest Freenet installer.
3. Run the installer and follow the instructions.
4. Answer the questions in the first-time configuration wizard.
5. Don't touch any of the other configuration options. Ever.

I sincerely hope you manage to succeed in running Freenet given this
extremely simple instructions. Either way, don't expect me to respond to
any of your further questions. At least not until you have bothered to
fix both your apparently malfunctioning keyboard and your attitude
towards those trying to help you.

of course, depending on what vpn, the bandwidth may be smaller,

one can also choose the port(s), including for mails (in and out) and

Probably it comes from one of the super-duker security on windows, an
anti-V or like. so you may just for the time of the installation get
those off, of course if you had downloaded the freenet install from
source (if, for that time you fear any external Virus attack _that
exist_ on those systems) you can just unconnect also from the web just
for the time of the install… it probably will work then. when it would
be installed, nothing will react anymore.
It acts the same with keygens.exe that will always start a very strong
alarm (and the keygens files are deleted instantly!), and there also,
one has to stop any antiVirus for a while. I always wondered if MS
wouldn't always keep those weekness to virusses as an agreement with
anti-V programs and making then more money out of it.;-) (always look
to whom the crime brings benefits!)

A fix will probably have to wait until I can get my hands on a Mac to

You can download the installer directly instead of using Java Web Start.
See the download instructions for Linux. [0] If you'd rather not use the
terminal you can save the link to a file with a .jar extension, and then
there might be a way to run it with Java by clicking it or checking the

Maybe your problem is of compatibility with your Mac version been rather
old… Mac Leopard 10.5.8 was a very excellent system 10 years ago, but
may not support the more recent appsor even java updates…
After Leopard, You had Snow leopard 10.6, Lion 10.7, Mountain Lion 10.8,
and now, Mavericks 10.9. If your hardware doesn't support these, I think
you'll have to chose an older version of freenet (they all work fine on
any of those systems since I've been using them years ago.
I've just finished to install the latest Freenet from the link given
above, and it worked fine… of course I had to go to the System
preferences to unblock the install of an unknown app. (Apple security)…
there is also a shortkey but I forgot it. Anyway you've got to give your
admin PW.

Could there be some way to issue renewed seednodes requests, other

Now FN just sits there repeating its log line while doing nothing else

Sounds crazy, but what system are you using ? in the last 2 or 3 years,
I experimented from time to time, and with some updates, temporary
troubles… but normally everything seems smooth, even connecting to
strange nodes and so on (iMac intel core duo, 10.7)

I (apparently) installed Freenet on my iMac (OS X Snow Leopard) some
time ago and have had intermittent freezes on the machine.

Apple support identified Freenet as the cause of a multitude of
'kernel panics' on the iMac (even after upgrading to OS X Lion) and
asked me to remove it.

Have you heard of similar problems from anyone else?

Hi,
That's completely wrong and false…
I'm using Mac from the start, 8 years ago, and have freenet working fine
since I first installed it, maybe four years ago. First Tiger,

then Leopard, Snow Leopard, and now Lion, and everything is fine.
The only troubles I have had with freenet, that was few weeks ago when
The automatic upgrade didn't work and I had to do it by
hand, and even that, was not related the slightest to Snow Leopard (that
I used at that time), since I heard a few complaints coming

from windows users and probably Linux too.

Did you try to start your mac from another account ? and have you the
same problem then ? Lion is very swift and efficient, but it has
to be perfectly set up… and some times, something from an old account
not perfectly compatible could just get on his way and make
him growl… what is your speed and RAM ? that could also play a role. The
thing is that it will probably never crash (none of mine ever did),
But if not enough energy or speed, it will take a new breath ! you
should spy on your cpu use and ram use (menu meter)

[freenet-support] about my previous question

2011-07-30 Thread Dsoslglece

Hi,
Just to say that I found the solution to my problem
I'm running on iMac-intel and did an upgrade from OSX 10.6.8 Snow
Leopard to OS X 10.7 Lion.

On restarting I got a message saying that the wrapper was not used…
Well, I surely wouldn't mind using it…

Here is some of the monologues from Terminal :
it is of course clearly indicated what is missing, but it doesn't say
where to find it !
I finally got one but in tar.gz, and I've no idea if Freenet can
handle this format.

I'll try it anyway and will see if it works (and let you know anyway)
So, I got this wrapper, and, after a bit of trials and experiments,
opened it and got the exec file for Mac OS X and
also the lib, and slided them into bin and lib but since they were
then not accepted, I also had to change their
name into : wrapper-macosx-universal-64 and
libwrapper-macosx-universal-64.jnilib…

After this, everything went fine and runs now like in oil.

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet 0.7.5 build 1384 and apology - please upgrade manually if necessary

2011-07-14 Thread Dsoslglece

Le 14/07/11 17:06, Matthew Toseland a écrit :

Freenet 0.7.5 build 1384 is now available. You may have to upgrade manually as
1382 has partially broken auto-update. I did test it earlier on but apparently
missed this. Normal updates on 1382 get a bogus error causing auto-update not
to work until it restarts (it doesn't permanently disable it), and then after a
restart it downloads the update again and breaks again.

Please use update.cmd or update.sh to update manually if necessary. However,
99% of the time, restarting Freenet will resolve it, because 1384 is (almost)
immediately mandatory, and updating over mandatory does still work. Hence
hopefully most users affected will reboot often enough for this to resolve
itself.

You can expect a significant but temporary performance loss from the mandatory
update, as the network sorts itself out. Sorry folks.

Changes in 1383 and 1384 are generally to do with fixing this, with code mostly
in the client layer. See the detailed changelogs inserted into Freenet, or the
git commits/tags. It also improves the browser warning page on the first-time
wizard, and there is a new version of the wininstaller which works around a
firefox bug which would delete all your tabs.

Thanks. 1382 itself was a major correction for a problem in 1381. I wasn't
clearly aware that 1382's problems are as serious until very recently. 1381
itself was released because of a serious but not critical bug... Major
cascading screwup caused mainly by insufficient testing, sorry...

Hi,
I'm on iMac-intel.
when I looked at freenet around an hour ago, it had no connection
(usually its betwen 14 and 16) and it said that the node was too old
(1382) but I new this problem since you mentionned it, so I tried to get
the newest version (1384) with freenet.jnlp it went OK, but of course,
on starting this new version, none of the data was preserved
(particulary a smal file (only 60 MB) that is very slowly downloading
since few monthes and that I really want to get. I tried to carefully
copy some files and folder containing data from the old to the new
version, and also the temporary folder persistant temporarybut after an
hour or so, it still appeared empty.
So, I tried another way, and I only mention this here since it may help
some.

I did first shut the newer version, and started the old one, but as soon
that it was running, I replaced from the folder, the old file (1382)
update.sh by the new one (in case some command on the old one would be
the cause of the bug), and entered in terminal the command :

./update.sh start
and it immediately started to update. After a while it said it had to
shut and restart, and so did it. And now, it seem to run perfectly, the
connexions being 15/16.

One thingthoughthat I remarked, is that earlier, when running, I could
see that java.freenet.node.NodeStarter was what went out on the net,
but since this version, it has changed, and the part getting out seems
to be Mac OS Kernel but I suppose that you are aware of this.

it has to be :

By the way, if you are using firefox, you should use it only for Freenet

What do you mean it doesn't work anymore? Was it working and then it

AFAIK Freenet still runs on Java 1.5, though there has been a lot of
talk of upgrading to 1.6 it hasn't happened yet. Even if it has been
upgraded, previous conversations on this mailing list hinted that you
can install Java 1.6 on OS X 10.4.

Either way though, I strongly suggest you upgrade your OS to 10.5. By
upgrading you have more up-to-date software and less security
vulnerabilities, and I know from personal experience that (any
computer I've tested) that was capable of running 10.4 is also able to
run 10.5.

Well, but it depends of the speed of the processor : Leopard needs a

[freenet-support] cpu problems

2011-05-20 Thread Dsoslglece

Hi,

Freenet 0.7.5 version #1375 rbuild01375
Freenet-ext version #29 rv29

iMac 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM 4 Go 1067 MHz DDR3

Hard disc, disponible 497 GB
(Freenet uses at the moment 109,39 GB of this HD… seems rather high
isn't it?)

I had to interrupt Freenet before yesterday evening, and when I started
it up again, the amount of cpu showed a very definit raise… normally it
is around 10%, and then it went to 65, even 100% with peaks… there is
since then a minor message saying :

resizing the data store (SSK cache) in progress:
35612745/8821826496673364297. The node will be slower than normally
during the process. Try not to restart Freenet.

So did I… but now, it is almost 2 days running like this… cpu is fixed
though between 50 and 53%… But I wonder if this is normal.
I can live with only 50% cpu disponible, but if this is wrong I'd rather
correct it. If the worse, I would just, using Time Machine, put back
this partition with freenet, in the state it was 4 days ago… but in
another hand, if this is a necessary step, I would just loose then two
days of Freenet efforts!

Hi,
just concerning your remark about IP changes, this is not a problem,
just get a Dyndns (free) account.
Then, your Dyndns IP will appear for the people to find you (always the

Hello,

I downloaded Freenet 0.7 for Mac, registered
as a new user and so forth. Then I exited
Foxfire. When I wanted to login and open
Freenet again, I couldn't figure out how. All
I could find was the download page, but the
software is already downloaded. The Rabbit
Tray icon doesn't do anything when I click on
it, and I don't see another way to open
Freenet. Could you please advise me how to
login/open Freenet on my Mac computer? Thank
  you.

Hi,
first of all, to start Freenet, you can use Terminal (very simple) :

1) cd[space]and the path to the freenet folder… for exemple, my
freenet is on a sparseimage disc called perso (made with disk
utility and PW protected),
so, I type :

cd /Volumes/Perso/Freenet
An easy way to write the correct path is, after having written
"cd+space", is to slide the Freenet folder's icon on terminal, so
the path is automatically written.

2) press the "next line key"

3) type : ./run.sh start

4) press the next line key.

Normally, and with the little rabbit icon, it is even more simple:

Of course, here, Freenet runs already, and so, one can only stop it,
but when it is stopped, you have the choice to 'start Freenet'.
That little icon, by the way should automatically go onto that menu
bar when one clicks on it from the application folder (doesn't go in
the dock !).

A little advice still, if you are using normally Firefox, use
another browser for Freenet ONLY, for instance Opera, that is very
similar and just as secure.
You can even locate it together with Freenet if you decided to use a
protected disc image… so you can keep bookmarks safe

Sorry, the message came back saying it was to big, so I reduced the
pict and hope it passes now

I have installed Freenet on multiple Mac computers, and never was there an icon in the menu bar. I
have always used the Java WebStart installer from the main page, having used it on computers with
operating systems ranging from 10.3 to 10.6. Since that icon has never been available, I have
always used the commands run.sh start and run.sh stop. Is there something
I'm doing wrong?

Note to Fritz:
1.I noticed that Dsoslglece didn't explicitly describe how to shut down Freenet with the same
method he described. From context, simply replace the argument start with
stop.
2. He also didn't explain where/what Terminal is. In case you don't know, it's located in
/Applications/Utilities/ on your hard drive. To put it simply, Terminal lets you run
commands through text, unlike graphical interfaces. So when you cd to a
folder, you're telling your computer to only look at files in that folder when running
commands. run.sh is a file in the Freenet folder which contains many pre-written commands
to get Freenet running (and shut it down), so when you tell it to start it starts
Freenet, and the same for shutting down.
3. If you ever want to know more about commands like cd that are built into your
computer, type man [command-name]. Man is short for manual, so as it sounds you'll be
shown the manual to that command.

A little advice still, if you are using normally Firefox, use another browser

Well, sorry for not giving more data… and since Dexter did a good job in
completing it, I'll just add a last thing.

Terminal is the console where to enter commands (to work on command line)
You'll find it in the utilities… just double-click on it to open it
Then you'll get a little window on your desktop…
On it will be something like :

*Last login: Sat Feb 12 15:12:05 on console
iMac-de-Bill:~ Bill$
*
Bill here would be your name, and, after the semi-colomn; ~ means 'home
directory' (generally where you are at the beginning) and it always
finishes with $

you enter whatever command just after that $.

continuing with the commands, and to shut freenet.
It goes this way:

1) same as previous, go to your Freenet Folder from terminal: cd /path
to it

2) press next line key

3) enter: ./run.sh stop

4) press next line key

Be very meticulous in entering (and spelling) any command, it only
accepts perfect ones… and also, restrain to fidlle around (just to
experiment!),
since Terminal is one of the most powerfull tool you could find on a
computer.

I may also add that as soon as freenet is on (you'll see its movements
in and out of the net on LittleSnitch monitor), but you'll have to open

your browser and enter this address: http://127.0.0.1:/

_To Dexter,_ and concerning the rabbit, yes it is a new little plus to
Freenet (since only few versions), and very useful may I add.

Freenet 0.7.5 build 1344 is out. Please upgrade, it will be mandatory on
Monday, and contains some important fixes to announcement and the low level
code:
- Fix a race condition in sending packets, which may or may not have caused
serious problems.
- Boost the priority of noderef transfers in both announcements and path
folding.
- Prevent local announcements from being routed back to the announcer.
- Indicate in the logs when our announcements are rejected by the seednode.

Please upgrade! Thanks. You may want to upgrade manually if your node is having
big problems, using the update.sh or update.cmd script (there is an option in
the system tray in Windows). Note that this is visible to the outside world as
it contacts our servers. You should definitely do this if you run a seed node.

Please report whatever problems you run into. Unfortunately Freenet continues
to have major problems, particularly with announcement / bootstrapping a new
node, which may or may not be fixed by the above...

Hi,
I first waited for freenet to update, but after 24 hours it was still
running the old version (mentionning though that it was obsolete) and
being still connected on 14 peers…

So, I tried to install the new version but got instead an older one (1308 !)
I downloaded then an update (with freenet) and got a file called
ext-26.jar… and I tried to replace with it a similar file in freenet
folder (just adding freenet) but even if it continued to work, it
seemed to be still version 1342… but I decided to give it more time.

And now, it has updated during the night to 1344…

Hi,

Here I got some answers for you:

Do I still see the Firfox browser and Google
  search box
Yes, you still have FireFox, but you need to configure in the
FireFox preferences (options) its way to the net using Freenet (as a
proxy… if the term
is new to you, you'll be able to find a definition for proxy in
wikipedia)

In fact, you will be using your browser as an interface (connection)
to Freenet.
But no, you want see Google search, you'll have to do your
researches and whatever you want to do (mails, chat, etc)
inside Freenet (that is from and through all the connected Freenet
users)

OR do I have a separate Freenet icon on
Desktop I can ALTERNATIVELY use when I wish to be private for
  whatever reason
To be able to use alternatively Freenet or not, you can manually
change each time the configuration in FireFox (that's a bit of a
pain!)
or install one of the FireFox extentions to be able to change it by
a click (that is using the direct connection, then using Freenet,
then using Tor,
then using Jap, etc.) something like for instance switch proxy…
An other solution would be to have two different browsers, one
dedicated to Freenet, for example Opera, and one dedicated to the
normal navigation.
when you say we give our bandwith (or
something like that) do you mean we lose memory to Freenet?
The bandwith has nothing to do with the memory, it is the capacity
from your line to let pass a certain amount of data… if the data
would be water,
one would speak of the size from the pipe ;-)

The bandwith depends:
from the state of the physical line (location, and quality of it)
from your contract with your ISP (limited anyway by the state of the
line)
and the traffic on this line.

Let say that you can receive 145 KB/s, you can then calculate the
time necessary to Download a file of 2MB (1MB±1000KB) to continue
with the allegory,
let say that your

Well, I would first verify if this is really true, _using another AV
program_, very often they play false alert game.
I once had to open on xp pro (installed parallely on my iMac) the exe of
a tiny app to use on mac, and it sounded like an
atom bomb was ready to explode... so I quitted xp and had a thought… I
finally decided to try it anyway, if the worst
I would just have had to spend 15 mn reinstalling xp… So, I shut the AV
app and opened the exe… went allright,
no problem, and so, I slided the opened app on my mac's desktop and used
it. Coming back then to XP, I started again the

AV, and nothing unnatural or surnatural happened, everything fine.

permission to get out, in Little Snitch (if you use it... but you should
anyway) in this case, the permission is : Vidalia : Allow connexions
via Tor (indicate the path : /Applications//#Whatever folder you
use/#/ Vidalia.app = /usr/bin/tor)

Some routers have also to be given permission...

Hello. I hope this is OK. It’s quite long.

I wonder if anyone can help with this/these question/s-comment/s in
the form of clarification. I hope it doesn’t seem too petty but I
wonder if others go through the same confusion as I.

On this page: http://127.0.0.1:/plugins/ one can go to: “Load
Official Plugin”
The viewer can see, as did I, that “Fetch over Freenet is checked
AND that it says,
“This is untraceable, safe….” NOW, untraceable means anonymous.
The other choice available is to, “Fetch over the web from
Freenet’s central servers…and is “TRACEABLE”, meaning NOT

(Freenet isn’t safe?)

On this page: FREEMAIL-SETUP
http://127.0.0.1:/freenet:u...@xog49gnltumtjjzj0fvzugdpo4hjusy2us
GQkjE7NY4,EtUH5b9gGpp8JiY-Bm-Y9kHX1q-yDjD-
9oRzXn21O9k,AQACAAE/freemail/4/setup/index.html

It clearly directs one method of using the same plugin page as my
beginning comment above (Load Official Plugin), with the “only”
comment for that choice being that it is NOT ANONYMOUS!

So, is one correct to assume that the first directive is false,
misleading and/or has been tampered with (edited) by someone with
bad intent? Or is it the second one?

One point I am trying to make here is that this can cause some
immediate doubt and confusion in someone new to Freenet. I am
concerned because the world needs Freenet and Tor more than they
might consciously know. I recently saw figures about the estimated
number of users for both, and the numbers were very small. They are
small enough that large arrays of computers, set around the world
and networked, are capable of watching ALL nodes and gathering the
data to be analyzed.

Look at Tor. On the Network Map (of the world), there are nodes
running in sequential order, and all these are located in the same
place – near the CIA in the US.
Some of these sequential orders are showing up in other locations
around the Tor network.

I have found Freenet to be so frustrating and confusing to set up
and use, that as I search the web for information that is clear and
helpful, I keep coming across more comments from Users who are
quitting the program. Now it does make sense to me, that with
anonymity programs, the more using them, the better and more safely
anonymous it is for all. But, it seems the numbers are dwindling. I
don’t know.

I have used Tor for about 4 years. I recently went to its Hidden
Wiki and about one half of all its services were gone! So, I
wonder, as do others, is Tor is dying out?

I really don’t want to see that for Tor or Freenet.

If one goes to: http://127.0.0.1:/plugins/ first, before
finding the .jar or .zip download page (supposedly both are
anonymous but of course, IT DOESN’T SAY, then they might make a
very bad choice solely from being confused by the directions.

So, while this might seem very petty and/or trivial to (I don’t
know-most who might read this), it is very important to write
directions for the reader, not the writer!

In Tor, the Hidden Services may be tampered with, changed,
purposely to be misleading and dangerous, by those who want to
destroy anonymity and our right to it. They use anonymity to try
and destroy anonymity, except for them, of course.

Is this also possible with the Freenet pages of “howto’s?” Can they
be edited so that one is not aware of what is true, accurate and
good for the User?

Anyway, I am once more trying to set up Freenet, Freemail and Frost
and am close to quitting. If I were more knowledgeable, I would
write “howto’s” but I am not. It seems all I am is frustrated.

One last thing, at Freemail-Setup, it tells me to download
Freemail. The next bit of ‘howto’ is setting it up for “command
line version setup”.

I’m not doing that.

I don’t know the pros and cons of command line Freemail. At the end
of that instruction it says, “Now you have Freemail proxy
running….”
I DO? How? I didn’t do that so what the fuck happened? Does the
download set it up or does it have to be set up after it’s
downloaded? The latter makes sense to me but, it is now telling me
I already have it running without doing anything. So, why the
instructions? I mean, C’mon! I have to go by what the writer
writes, right?

Since it tells me I have it up and running, where is it? I can’t
find it. These instructions are telling me to insert the long
Freemail address I was given.
I was given? When? Where? I haven’t done anything yet but the
directions jump from something I don’t want to do and didn’t do,
to, “I’m up and running!”

This is a joke right? It’s only for those who are IT smart, meaning
very few, and anonymity will be shot on site.

Just before it gets to THUNDERBIRD, it tells me, “Remember that the
Freemail.jar program needs to be running whilst you are reading and
sending emails. So, where is it? There is no window to put in
any information.

Perhaps if I could get some help, yeah, I might be able to help
others.

Sorry for the rant but

me. Sorry 'bout that.

Freenet tells me it is trying to connect to my external IP and that
I can use the Temporary IP Address hint. How?
What is it I am supposed enter in that window and where do I find
that information?

Also, it tells me to forward three ports. Again, how does one do
such a thing? I've never forwarded a port or an email so I need
help here also.

It also informs me that I am using a node or version, (0.7.0) that
is horribly old and I should update. I have tried in the
configurations drop down and it says configurations are
successfully changed but I don't know if that is in fact the
correct update. It still tells me each time I go to Freenet that my
node is very, very old. HELP!

Lastly, how does one go about finding friends on Freenet or
Frost. It says to only connect to friends but I don't know anyone
using Freenet or Frost. I am in a country that blocks many sites. I
think the most in the world, so any real help would be greatly
appreciated. It would be so nice to be able to talk with someone
about different things while learning more about Freenet and Frost
and how to use them to achieve the best safety and anonymity one
can.

Thanks again.

Hi,
for the IP address, you must got one by registering for example at
DynDNS, and obtain one to enter in the window, from then it will be all
forwarded through them.

Hi,

My name is Michael and I'm currently studying the source code of Freenet.

I have found that the object reference for all PeerNode objects has the
IP address of the peer associated with it. How is anonymity kept with
the IP of the peer exposed? I have examined the log file and it seems
the object reference of the peers are logged as they are added.

What I'm confused is since Freenet seek to promote freedom of speech in
the presence of strict government control, if they decide to run a
Freenet node and collect IP addresses in this manner, the consequences
would be unthinkable

I have tested this by adding another node of mine and my IP address
appears as expected.

Can anyone explain to me why??

Thanks,

Hi Michael...
it is correct that your IP would be known by your neighbour node, but,
he is the only one to be able to identify you... more, and beside the
fact of being able to be sure that you are using Freenet (only sure of
this), even so, he has no way of knowing if the info or file or
whatever, coming to you, or going from you, did or not come or go 10
nodes away from you, since you act also (as a node) in passing
packets... and anyway, even so, he is (and you are, and any of your
neighbours) unable to know the content of the package, if you didn't
create it yourself or ask yourself for it since only the original sender
and final receiver are able to know it's content.

Hope it was clear...

This is very strange. If you go to Status and then to Connections to Strangers, there are no connections?
Are there any nodes listed as disconnected, busy, backed off, etc?

Can you post your wrapper.log? (File in the dir Freenet is installed into)

I must say however that I would very much prefer to have freenet
installed and working on Leopard, not fearing then any virus and such
problems with it... I know, if XP would get infected I would only have
to reinstall it... since I don't keep much folders in it... (at the
beginnig, I'd try to see if, been on Mac, it would be protected from
such attacs and infections, and, just for the experiment went to a site
where I new to find bugs, and... ;-)… well I had to reinstall it...
so now, I'm being a bit careful.

Next thing, if I can't find proper solutions, would be to install
Freenet on the linux part of my OS (there is already stealthnet on
Kubuntu, working fine) and this has anyway, like mac, the Unix security

I'd be grateful for a little advice... thanks.

Well, here is what Terminal had to say (first DLed the file manually
with FireFox at the given link, then did a cd to its place, and then
entered one after the other the lines of command

My version of java is the latest (I think it is now 1.6) I verified the

automatic update if needed.

If you go to Status and then to Connections to Strangers, there are no connections? Are there any nodes

Going now to the xp pro side of my Mac-Intel, when I open freenet (here,

looking in status/connection to strangers shows (0/0/0/0/0/0)

And I couldn't see any indication of disconnected nor busy nor backed

Freenet on the linux part of my OS (there is already stealthnet on
Kubuntu, working fine) and this has anyway, like mac, the Unix security
level...

I'd be grateful for a little advice... thanks.

Hi Andrew, I realize that I mis to end you one of the things you were
asking for:

the wrapper.log... but if it is easy to locate on Linux or Mac (just go into
the applications dir, and open the freeNet folder, and even if on an app, right
clic to show the inside of the app... it seems to be on Windows, an other sort
of a story... since the application folder shows only probably aliasses or
controls to the proper app... and not the complete app folder anyway... so how
the hell on windows is one going into an apps folder and fiddling with its guts?

Hi,
for a bit more than a year, I used Freenet (discontinuously but
regularly), without problems on Mac PPC Tiger.
Now, I updated my old machine to an iMac-Intel, and, trying to follow
the advices, downloaded the last Freenet.jnlp, but, even if it arrived
correctly on my desk, it doesn't start the install, neither
automatically, nor by double-clicking it.

So, continuing to follow the instructions, and since the first steps
didn't work, I went to Linux instructions, and entered in Terminal the
commands how they are given to DL the new install jar.

wget http://freenet.googlecode.com/files/new_installer_offline_1222.jar
-O new_installer_offline.jar

java -jar new_installer_offline.jar

It didn't work... so, I extracted the first part of it (URL) and Dlded
it by hand with FireFox.

I must say that I still am a bit bepuzzled with the content of it, that
doesn't seem to ressemble the sort of packages to be installed through
Terminal... no file called install nor istall info, giving the steps
to follow… nor file in it looking somehow a bit alive (.sh, .jar,
.exec...) so, I tried anyway to follow the commands given in the tut,
but it didn't work either...

What exactly happened after you typed java -jar new_installer_offline.jar ?
What error message did you see? What version of Java do you have installed on the Mac?
Freenet needs Java 1.5 now, some versions of OS/X might have 1.4?

Next thing, since I'm on mac-Intel, I tried to install it on the xp pro
side of my computer...

It downloaded OK, and installed fine (there is already i2p working fine
on this xp), but now, and after few hours, it doesn't seem to be able to
connect to nodes... I opened the proper holes in the router from my
modem, and it didn't managed either... (I choosed *normal *at all
security levels, meaning that it could connect to unknowns), and also
gave momentaryly my IP (bybassing proxy)... besides this, I don't think
that for this xp pro there is any firewall... have to investigate though
to see if my mac Firewall works for it (really don't think so, neither
LittleSnitch)...

So I managed finally to find How to go there on a windows... and having
been inside the Freenet dir, looked for wrapper log... no file was
called that way, but one that was called just wrapper and was a .txt
made me think that it should be it... so, here is the last of the
logging details.

Hello,

I have Freenet installed in Windows XP on my F:\Freenet drive.
I want to move the installation to my C:\Freenet drive.
I also want to shrink or change my datastore size from 100Gigs down to
perhaps 10Gig instead, before or after the move.

I am using Windows XP.

How would I accomplish the above ?
I have found were to change the size under Advanced, but it doesn't
seem to shrink it yet. Does it take time ?

Any help with the above would be tremendous. In doing the move, I
plan to keep the node up 24/7.

Hi,
I also use from time to time windows xp pro, and now particularly to
experiment with Freenet (this xp is installed on an iMac Leopard-Intel),
but sofar after reading your post, I wonder why don't you just try,
after having stopped Freenet, to make a right click on its directory and
then, click on: move to... and choosing the location You like... It
should work... you may verify afterwith if all the paths and links are
correct, but it should be,since normally all the DL folders, Temp
folders, and so on are in this same directory... I did often this on the
leopard part of my OS and it always worked (Pando, Freenet [this was on
Tiger], Ants...)

You should give a trial

Hi!

Since I started this instance of freenet, mid 2007, I've repeatedly
received an alert 'Your node name isn't defined.'. Despite deciding that
the nickname provided is suitable and clicking 'apply', the alert comes
back every time the node restarts. Is there some regular expression it
uses to determine if the nickname is of the autogenerated kind, or is it
just not remembering that I chose that nickname?

Thanks.

Hi,
reading this, I wonder if it is not a question of the answer not
registering properly... I have the same sort of experience when,
after having been asked to enter my external IP from the moment (to
connect) and having entered it + saved it, just opening this
window again, few seconds later or half an hour later, I would be asked
the same question.

(iMac-Intel Leopard, but from the Windows xp pro installed on it)

[freenet-support] Some bug (?) report

2008-11-24 Thread Dsoslglece

Hi,
I had this message, and so I do what was asked for, and send it at one
of the required addresses
I think that a reason for this may have been the fact that about an hour
ago, I did send two files to my editor (about 10 MB) each, and the
traffic may have been a bit strangled since I've got only about 34 Kb/s
on upload
I've got this information about my version on the home page (I believe
the last one):

Freenet 0.7 version #1181 r23784
Freenet-ext version #26 r23771

and I'm running OS X 10.4.11

Probably a bug: please report: 7 peers forcibly disconnected due to not
acknowledging packets.
7 of your peers are having severe problems (not acknowledging packets
even after 10 minutes). This is probably due to a bug in the code.
Please report it to us at the bug tracker at
https://bugs.freenetproject.org/ or at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Please include this message and what version of the node you are
running. The affected peers (you may not want to include this in your
bug report if they are darknet peers) are:
