If you want to know if a mail is really sent,
don't put a copy in the sent folder, but include yourself in the
recipient's list (invisible carbon copy)

then filter input mail from yourself to put it in the sent folder

at least, you will know if the mail can be received
of course there could be some problems at the recipient side (or provider)

I'm sending my important e-mail with a bcc to another e-mail address.
When I don't get my bcc copy on the second e-mail address there's
something wrong!

And this is the problem I tried to describe!

Such a problem is not always within your own system. Among other causes:

* The recipient's mail host might block the message because the
recipients inbox is full, because your ISP was (erroniously?) identified
as a source of spam, or because a possibly innocent attachment to your
message violates some policy. I have seen this happen. Worse, I have
seen this happen when the recipient's mail host is not configured to
issue a bounce message.

* Your own ISP's mail server blocked the message because of an
attachment that is a file-type it does not allow. I once used an ISP
that would not allow me to send an application (file-type .exe) as an
attachment. It also prevented me from sending ZIP files. Both of these
were considered sources of malware. Again, I got no response message
that my E-mail did not go through. (In the case of an application, I
would zip it; for that and other ZIP attachments, I would then remove
the file-extension, My E-mail would instruct the recipient to restore
the .zip extension and then unzip it.)

Thanks a lot for your quick answer!! I have a lot of doubts regarding my
ISP, who doesn't take car of the land lines network, as I'm living in
the country side. But I'll have to check everything and just try again.

Anyway I'll get everyone informed of what is going on in this thread!!!
Thanks a lot for your assistance

No, it just means that we'll release the v2.49.x when we get
this mess cleared up. And by "mess", I mean the new infrastructure
which is unfortunately, taking a lot longer to get running

Mainly because I'm also trying to incorporate the build config

Umm, how could your experience improve if you don't notice it?

NEW is not, a priori, better.
E.G. More than a year ago there was talk of removing Composer due to it
not handling all of the "latest/greatest" {sic} features of HTML. That
would be a mistake. I does what it claims. I regularly need what it
offers.

THANK YOU developers!

Composer should be dropped. It is decades out of touch with HTML and
CSS standards. It produces totally crappy code that won't validate.

Yes, once upon a time, like 1996, I used Composer to create a Web site.
I then, in Web terms, grew up, got wiser, learned.

Kill Composer. It serves no useful valid purpose. Rip the code out and
slim down SeaMonkey.

Sounds like you're trying to do more or less what I'm doing.

The problem with OpenOffice and LibreOffice is that neither includes a
mail client. (And I believe that OpenOffice is more or less abandoned).

The fact that they do not include an e-mail client is by design as there
are numerous good ones out there. As far as Apache OpenOffice being
abandoned as Mark Twain once replied; "The report of my death was an
exaggeration.” For more information see
here:https://blogs.apache.org/OOo/entry/stop_the_lazy_season_start

If you're experimenting with calendar, then I think that it's generally
easier to synchronize a mobile device with Outlook, than it is with
Lightning -- at least that's been my experience with both Android, and
years ago, when I used Windows Mobile. Some may depend on what client
you're using for your synchronization. For Windows Phone, you should
have a reasonably good synchronization tool from Microsoft, but it's
likely to be very strong in presuming that you want to sync a calendar
with Outlook.

The easiest way I found to sync SeaMonkey with an Android phone is to
use google calendar and the provide for google calendar extension in
SeaMonkey.

In that situation, especially testing, I would not bother to try to
integrate email. Stick to the non-email things in Outlook.

Why do you want to run both simultaneously?

I happen to use Outlook for non-email stuff, primarily because it
integrates with my Android phone better than Thunderbird does, and I
don't have any strong felt need for integration between my calendar and
my email.

If you're trying to do both for email, then I will suggest that you want
to do use IMAP for both.

However, be aware that Seamonkey (and Thunderbird) and Firefox have very
different design philosophies. The Mozilla design is that the email
client is intended to support email, and built around adherence to
adherence to Internet standards.

Outlook has an entirely different approach, where the fundamental design
is intended to be a client that interacts with a Microsoft Exchange
server (and other Microsoft servers), and also acts as a go-between to
transport data between users of various components of Microsoft Office.
To that end, Microsoft's embrace of standards is traditionally tenuous,
where they adopt the things that fit what they want to do, and may do
their own variants, if the standards don't do things the way that they
want. And there's a lot of stuff in Outlook that isn't usable unless
you're interacting with Exchange. In the same way, there's a lot of
Exchange features you won't be able to use with a Mozilla client -- the
only way you'll be able to do that is with Outlook.

I've heard it said that Outlook is a great Exchange client, an adequate
IMAP client, and a mediocre POP client, and from my own experiences,
I've found that to be the case.

Thanks a lot for your quick assistance on the matter. My wife wanted to
try Microsoft office for a month; although I recommended Open Office.
She said that she wanted to synchronize her Windows Phone calendar with
the Desktop.
So I thought I should keep on using SeaMonkey as I've been doing since
Netscape Communicator!!

What do you think???

First try something simple, like repairing the Sent folder.
1. Right-click on the folder and select "Properties".

Look under "Server Settings" for that account and under "Local
directory" will give to the local path to the containing directory of
that mail account.

Example:

C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\[SALT].default\Mail\mail.[MAIL_SERVER_URL]

AppData is hidden by default so unless you have set in Explorer you will
not be able to see this path, and may have to specify the complete path
or use the ENV var

%APPDATA%

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\[SALT].default\Mail\mail.[MAIL_SERVER_URL]

In that folder there should be a "Sent" file which is the account's mbox
Sent folder

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\[SALT].default\Mail\mail.[MAIL_SERVER_URL]\Sent

Thanks for your quick answer. After looking from the "server settings"
inside the "Local Directory" I have not been able to find "Sent Folder".
May be this folder must be a hided file, or do I have to create it
Let me know what you think

You should not have to. It is auto-generated after send an email on that
account *IF* in "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings" you have "When
sending messages:" enabled and the Sent folder set to that account. See
my example

<http://www.littleworksstudio.com/temp/usenet/sent>

Thanks Jonathan,
I understand , and in my "Mail & Newsgroup Accounts settings" I have
checked the option : "Automatically place a copy in "Sent" folder".

But since Oct the 10th it had stopped working.
I had in mind that other SeaMonkey users had experienced this and that
the developers had a solution for this.
So to summarize my problem it have been working perfectly as you
describe it : "It is auto-generated after send an email on that

> account *IF* in "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings" you have "When
> sending messages:" enabled and the Sent folder set to that account. "
but the very last e-mail sent in this folder is dated 10/10/2015.
I can manage with that as I am now manually "BCC:" my e-mails to another
e-mail address but I think that it is better to improve the quality of
SeaMonkey by warning the users and developers.

Hi, Windows 10 just forced itself on me. Which I guess is OK, but.

Seamonkey runs for a while and then slows to a grind and eventually
stops. The little blue swirly thing goes and goes and goes and when I
check Task Manager, Seamonkey is taking an awful lot of RAM (like over
25%).

I will close down Seamonkey and then reload it. Things go ok for a

shorter time.

Any help? Or do I have to wait until there's a SM released specifically
for Win10?

Hi there!! I did the upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and SeaMonkey
is doing fine in this environment Except that during the upgrade

It sounds like something got corrupted by the crash. Before going any
further, back up your profile as it is now. To find your profile folder,
see:
   http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_SeaMonkey

Hopefully the actual mailbox is fine, but it's just the index is
corrupted. In that case, you could try:
- Edit > Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
- Select "Sever Settings" under the affected account name
- Copy the path from "Local Directory" near the bottom of the dialog
- Cancel that dialog and close SeaMonkey
- Open the path you just copied in Windows Explorer
- If you can't see the file extensions, go to Organise > Folder and
Search Options > View, remove the tick from "Hide extensions for known
file types" and click OK
- Delete the Inbox.msf file (DO NOT delete the Inbox file with no
extension)
- Restart SeaMonkey

You might find that messages which had been deleted since you last
compacted the folder reappear, but hopefully they're now readable.

If all else fails, you could restore your profile from a recent backup.

Mark.

Thanks a lot for your assistance Mark!!!
20 minutes after the crash I received new e-mails and everything was
readable.

I already checked as Jonathan suggested the "message body as"
and it was "Original HTML" But I'll keep your reply in my file as your

seems to be very wisely useful!!

The core questions are:
a) Is the original add-on (download from AMO) compatible?
b) Is the compatibility rating on AMO page correct (sometimes
you will find a warning "not available for SM 2.33.1", but
Installed Addon will work fine
c) If not compatible, what minor or serious problems have

e) Is a compatible (or alternative) add-on available, may be form other

Before I retired, I had a 41-year career in software, first programming
and then testing. I developed approximately 25% of the specifications
for a military software project that eventually cost about $400,000,000.
I was called out of the shower (at home, getting ready for bed) to take
a phone call from a satellite launch facility to explain how to use the
command and control software for a space satellite that was within a
hour of launch. I taught end-users about the mathematics underlying
their software. I p[roved that a new software package failed to
implement the customer's requirements, delaying deployment about 6
months while the package was rewritten.

I do not need or want some developer who was not yet born when I started
my career imposing unwanted protection on me.

Wow!!! You have a very impressive CV!!!
I just wanted to know if you have been using the theme "Orthodox"
which does not work with SeaMonkey 2.32.1, but certainly works with 2.26.1
I love it!!
I don't have your programming and testing skills, therefore I remains
trusting

Mozilla for security!!

That is why we have betas. I hope it is a bug. I still use Windows XP
Pro SP3. Did you guys report it in its Bugzilla? :)

I added it to the tracking bug 1132299 which was started by Edmond Wong

Thank you! I hope they will fix it! Now, if I could tell Netgear to
support Windows XP SP3. Argh.

Fix it? Why? XP is deader than dead, even with the POS2009 hack.
They've now switched to VS2013 for compiling so the compiler is
targeting OS from this century. While I did read about this problem
affecting XP SP2 users, I don't think it makes a difference in terms
of SP2/SP3. The future is leaving the past behind. No one is making
proper driver/software support for XP anymore so eventually it just
won't run. It doesn't make sense to compile for something that's EOL
even if a few people are still using it. Maybe the devs will work
around it but I doubt for very long. It will become just too time
consuming to support.

I suspect the core user base of Seamonkey is anachronistic hold outs in
general. Most of us are probably old Netscape 1-4 users who could never
get used to the more modern interface of other browsers and like how the
old Netscape suite worked. IE we get comfortable with one thing and
don't switch unless we have too.

That probably also means that the Seamonkey base has a larger than
average hold out of XP SP3 users. XP works, little motivation to go to
Win 7. I have it at home, I don't like it. I'm certainly guilty of both
charges.

I hear you 400%... I'm an old Netscape Communicator freak, who still is
in the Browser-war against IE.

Your previous profile, in your old Vista installation, SHOULD be at:

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles

Same as in Windows 7, in fact.

Now, if you did a full reinstall from the Windows 7 DVD in the same
disk, your old install folders (which include the C:\Windows, C:Program
Files and C:\Users, among others) were probably moved to a separate
folder called C:\Windows.old. So it's possible that your old SM profile
is located at:

C:Windows.old\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles

Alex, another way to locate your profile is to have a look at the
"Server Settings" screen of your email account after selecting
Edit->Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings.

At the bottom of the "Server Settings" screen is shown the "Local

Does the Mozilla Crash Reporter come up? If so, open SeaMonkey, go to
Help-->Troubleshooting_Information, and click on "about:crashes". From
there, click on your latest crash reports, and tell us your latest crash
IDs. We can then look at the data specific to your crash and have a
better idea of what is causing the problem.

Those crashes happened in March and earlier, so I assume those aren't
the ones that triggered you to post in here.

If it's still happening in safe mode, try this:
1. Uninstall SeaMonkey
2. Reboot your computer
3. Delete the directory: C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\ (it may be
different on 64 bit version)
4. Re-install SeaMonkey

Chris,

Here are the latest ones:

In the past I tried to re-install SM with re-booting but did not delete
its directory. It did not help.

As 2.9 also is still affected I now went back to 2.6.1

Reason always seams to be "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ"

Any Ideas?

This doesn't contain the really important parts of the report, could you
go to about:crashes, find the one with the right timestamp when this
happened, and give us the link/ID of that one?

Lightning: Hierarchical tasks and assignment to other persons

2011-09-14 Thread Alex Baer
Hi everyone,

I have Lightning 1b5 and I am missing two features.

(1) Sub-Tasks
How can I define sub-tasks to a task?

(2) Assignment of tasks to others
How can I design a task to another person, but still track progress?

I didn't find this functionality in Lightning, so far. Did I overlook it? Or
is there another plug-in, that could fill the gap?

BTW, I have also Reminder-Fox installed, and it has nice features, but
unfortunately I didn't find the two functions mentioned above in it, either.

Thanks in advance!

Is there really an index for maildir needed? I assume, maildir would work
quite well without an index, because each message is a file, and every file
has an "index" in the file system. In fact, I don't see index files in
maildir filesystem folders.

Also, I would assume, that reading and processing multiple message files can
be done in parallel on modern systems, while mbox probably only allows
sequential processing. Not sure, if mail clients supporting maildir really
read and process multiple messages in parallel, though, frankly.

Regardless, if my assumptions above are correct, my experience is, that
KMail is quite a bit faster working on folders with many thousands of
messages than Seamonkey Mail. But I have to add, that operations where this
speed difference becomes evident, are rarely used, such as copying large
bunches of mails between mail folders. So it's noticeably, but not something
that would prevent anyone from using Seamonkey Mail.

Regards,

   Alex

Yes, drag'n'drop works. I was referring to the Copy To function in the pop-
up menu. I've rechecked that, and you are right: Now the bottom level with
the sub-folder 'four' is there, indeed. But it obviously takes Seamonkey a
while to synchronize the menu with the folder tree.

But in principle it works, obviously. I still find it a bit puzzling, that
there is no real folder for the lowest level, but only an mbox and an index
file, instead. Apart from that, it seems that I have been mis-informed in
several respects.

I apologise, as my intent was never to cause confusion. As it turns out, I
am the only one, who was confused. ;) So thank you guys, for your valuable
time, and clearing these things up --- much appreciated!

You almost convinced me to return to Seamonkey... ;), if not two little
snags I found in Lightning finally prevent me from switching, but that's a
different story.

I'v just done a little 'experiment'. I created a 3-level folder hierarchy in
Seamonkey Mail under Local Folders. Top level folder is called one, within
that I have a folder named two including a folder named three. Then I
checked, what has actually been created in the file system. I found

Level 1: one, one.msf, one.sbd
Level 2 (within one.sbd): two, two.msf, two.sbd
Level 3 (within two.sbd): three, three.msf

There's no three.sbd. So the folder hierarchy is NOT there 1:1, as there is
no file system folder for mail folder three.

Then I created another sub-folder below three, with the name four. Now, the
folder three.sbd was created, but no folder four.sbd was there, just two
files: four and four.msf.

Then I copied some mails into the new folders, and found that I can't copy
anything into folder four. It is displayed in the hierarchy on the left
pane, but the menu function "copy to" only works down to level three. One
might argue, that it usually is more than enough to have three levels of
hierarchy in the folder tree, but nevertheless this is not consistent.

As a last step I checked, what's actually in the files and folders. I found,
that the folders (one.sbd, two.sbd, three.sbd) only contain theire
respective sub-folders and the index and mbox files for these, while the
mbox and .msf files are on the same level as the folder itself.

I guess, the reasoning here is, that real folders are only created, when
they contain sub-folders. Obviously, the hierarchy in the file system has a
different structure than the one shown in Seamonkey, at least for the leaf
nodes (i. e. the lowest level, respectively).

*Then I was mis-informed here, thanks for correcting me!*
As I said, I had big trouble with Mozilla mail clients in the past, and I
thought it was due to that, because all mails were still there, but not
correctly displayed anymore, no matter how long I waited for some index
being recreated. But maybe there was something else that went awfully wrong.
Well, that's the past. Back on topic:

Re-creation of index files was unfortunately not done instantly in earlier
versions. For large mbox files it takes ages. The whole concept slows down
actions, such as copying 500 messages from one folder to

As I said, not the mbox format as such is the problem, but the
functionality that is implemented in Mozilla mail clients, that stretch
this flat file format to something it isn't supposed to be.

Because the functionality is there, I used it, and created a multi-
level hierarchy of folders, sub-folders and sub-sub-folders to organise
my mail. This may or may not have been a great idea, but it became a
huge problem, when after a crash the index files were damaged, and the
program was unable to repair them, and all the structure information
about the hierarchy of folders was lost.
The result: Many mails had no meta data, anymore. That made it
impossible to distinguish emails that were included in the last backup
from new ones. Therefore I had to check them individually, manually
comparing mails on my system with my backup. It took me many hours, to
get it fixed.
After a second crash with quite the same hassle, just with a lot less
email messages being affected, I switched to KMail, and NEVER had such
a problem again. As far as I can tell, this is for a big part not an
achievement of KMail as such, but owed to the file format in which
mails are stored.

What is more, the pseudo-hierarchy can be resolved only by Mozilla
clients. Other programs don't know what to do the index files. Now,
opening an mbox file with another mail client, and then opening the
file again with a Mozilla client may also cause index file corruption,
in my experience. So this is a very fragile approach.

As long, as there are index files simulating hierarchies, that are not
really there, for virtual folders containing thousands of emails, this
is a harmful functionality.

Pseudo-hierarchies should not be supported in combination with mbox,
IMHO, as this approach is bound to cause trouble --- it's only a
question of time.

And, BTW, a quick research of the web will tell you, that I am by far
not the only one who experienced this sort of problem.

I very much like Seamonkey, it's functionality, it's UI etc. But I need
a more robust mail client. With maildir (or mh) support, Seamonkey Mail
could be it, but I don't trust it, as long as it only supports mbox
with index files (and again: the index files are the problem, actually,
not mbox as such).

Thanks for the quick response. I hope, the work goes on, on this, and I
hope, it's possible to speed it up. Corrupted index files drove me nuts
in the past, backups take inadequately long time, and once the size of
mbox file exceeds a certain limit, all kinds of trouble start, from a
slow-down of the whole mail client to inconsistencies caused by delays
in writing back data. Prof. Bernstein seems to be a bit of a character,
but maildir was a brilliant idea, I think.
As an alternative, mh would also be ok. I cannot tell, what exactly is
the difference between mh and maildir, or why the latter is often
called the successor of the first one. Both follow the "one file per
mail" approach, and neither one has ever caused me the problems I had
with mbox and index files.

Maybe, I should point this out: There's nothing wrong with mbox as
such. In fact, it's the easiest format to create HTML pages for
archiving mails and publishing mail archives. But in the Mozilla mail
clients it's possible to create virtual folder hierarchies and sub-
structures. And this is DANGEROUS with mbox. I have had no problems
with only one level of hierarchy (i. e. flat structure) using mbox.

So my request is actually: Either remove the capability to create
folder structures, or make it reliable.

I'd really like to use Seamonkey Mail, but at the moment I don't fully
trust it, based it on experience from the past with mbox and index
files.

BTW: I am impressed about the bug tracking --- 11 years of history,
nothing lost. More dependable than my own protein based memory, in any
case. ;)

maildir support in a future release, instead of mbox only?

2011-09-09 Thread Alex Baer
 Hi everyone,

I am new to this newsgroup, so please be patient with me, inittially.

My question has been asked several times in other forums and mailing
lists, as it seems, certainly, but a quick web research didn't give any
useful answers within the last 12 or 14 months. Of course, should have
overlooked something, could you, please, point me to the relevant
stuff?

Are there plans, that Seamonkey Mail will support other mail storage
formats than mbox? Examples would be mh or maildir.

Seamonkey is such a powerful and modern suite of tools and
applications, that it's hard to understand and accept, that only mbox
is supported, as of now. I have had trouble with the index files needed
to resemble pseudo-hierarchies of mail folders, and maybe other things.
Also, incremental backups take much more time than justified, because
if one message changes or is added to the mbox file, the file is
considered new, and backed up completely every time. Finally, Seamonkey
Mail slows down, when the mbox files grow (I admit: files must be REAL
big, before the speed penalty becomes evident).

So I think, support for more modern mail formats would definitely
have significant benefits for many of us.

e-mail send performance

Hi

I am using SM 2.04 for e-mail on Vista. When I send largish e-mails (say

I am using ESET AV but I think it is innocent, the 100% is pretty much

Known issue? Any remedy?
