Winamp and RealPlayer do indeed work with a number of the streams I
like, mostly classical music. Although Winamp does not appear in the
list of plugins with either [Help > About Plugins] or [Tools > Add-ons
Manager > Plugins], I can select a link to a stream and receive the
broadcast.

However, I am having trouble with some live streaming broadcasts. The
affected (and afflicted) links end with the extension .pls (e.g.,
listen.pls, mp3.pls). When I select a .pls link, I get an error popup
that says:

C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\listen-7.pls could not be opened,
because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the
association in your preferences.

The "listen-7.pls" might instead be "mp3-5.pls" for a mp3.pls link.

When I go to [Edit > Preferences > Browser > Helper Applications], I
cannot find an entry for .pls. I do find an entry for MIME type
audio/x-scpls but not audio/pls, neither of which are registered with
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (IANA).

How do I create a new Helper Application entry for .pls files?

It would help if you gave an example url, but try saving the .pls file
& then opening in windows explorer by right clicking on the file &
selecting open or open with. Windows should come back with some error
about not knowing how to open the file and then let you choose a
program to use for opening the file. Choose winamp, realplayer or
whatever you think might work and then try your website with the live
streaming broadcasts again.

Lee

I tried Open With with each of RealPlayer, Winamp, and VLC. None of
that worked to enable playing the streams from links in a Web page.
However, the Open With launch whatever application I indicated and
played the streaming broadcast from just the downloaded fragment of a
file.

Here are two links:

-- KCEA, 89.1 FM, Atherton, CA

 -- KMZT, 1620
AM, Los Angeles, CA

When clicking on the link I open my download manger and asks what to
open with, I choose VLC ver. 2.1.0 and it begins-- has been playing 30
mins now.

Mine also plays well with VLC 2.0.6

No, but I know a new (related) question, why doesn't "-new-instance"
make it ignore the problem. Acording to help that's exactly what it
should do. And I believe I've used command line options to open a new
remote version as well, but don't have time to research it for you. Take
a look at the "-remote" command values, see if that gives you a
workaround if you ever really do have a running process.

Try deleting the popstate.dat file from the account subfolder in

(Note: if you delete "popstate.dat" and you still have messages on the

You didn't answer whether you have "Leave messages on server" checked, nor
who your ISP or mail service is. Should we assume the address you posted

From another thread, responding to this same problem:

It may be that SeaMonkey didn't shut down properly on some
occasion. If that happens, a file called 'parent.lock' is created,
which prevents another instance of SeaMonkey from running.

With SeaMonkey closed, locate the SeaMonkey 1.x profile, you should
find it here:

C:\Documents & Settings\\Application
Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\.slt

Where '' is a random eight-character string.

The file 'parent.lock', if present, should be in the folder
'.slt', if it is delete it. You should then find that you
will no longer get the message that SeaMonkey is still running and
you should be able to run SeaMonkey 2.7. Note that SeaMonkey 2.8 is
now available, so I would suggest installing that, rather than
v2.7.

I hope that helps.

If you do File | Print or CTRL-P, there should be a pull-down list of
printers ("Name:") from which you can select the desired target.

Assuming the list is there (is it?), what happens if you choose a
different printer? Are all equally affected, or just one? Even if you
have only one physical printer, Windows would normally include things
like "Fax" and "Microsoft XPS Document Writer," as well as drivers such

As Paul and Hank suggested, I checked which printer.
Somehow the default printer got changed.

Do you get an error message? The print preview uses the same print

Wrong (just checked). Please don't give such false advice,
especially if
it results in data loss without any undo possibility. The Empty Trash
command actually includes a Compact Folder call.

When did this action change?? Perhaps we users should have had it drawn
to our attention!!

As Beauregard already noted, what you wrote is probably true if read
exactly. Empty Trash does in fact not touch the Inbox, only the Trash
folder. For the latter it includes a Compact Folder call.

[It didn't appear to me that anyone could think that Empty Trash would
affect other folders.]

HTH

Jens

so...Empty Trash actually *does/should* reduce the size of the Inbox
because the user has moved the files to the Trash so they no longer
reside in the Inbox, and the Trash Compacts on Empty.

If it doesn't work that way, it should! That would be what one would
expect.

No, Rufus, as I understand it:-

1.an e-mail is received into the inbox, un-read. Inbox size is
increased.
2.the e-mail in the inbox is read (causing a change in e-mail
header). Inbox file size is unchanged.
3.the e-mail in the inbox is marked as Trash, causing change in
header, but stays in inbox (invisible) and Trash number increases by
one. Inbox file size is unchanged.
4.Trash is emptied, causing change in header, but stays in inbox
(invisible) and Trash number goes to zero. Inbox file size is unchanged.
5.*E-Mail account is compacted*, so all e-mails in the inbox that
have
the change made in point four are deleted from the inbox and the inbox
is compacted, reducing its size.

I had thought the indicator might have been X-Mozilla-Status because, in
my inbox, an email showed the following difference when I marked it as
un-read and then as read:-

Unread messageX-Mozilla-Status:
read messageX-Mozilla-Status: 0001

but another message, which I had marked for deletion still had
X-Mozilla-Status: 0001, so I don't know which setting it is!!

IMHO, of course, and subject to correction, re-education.

You state above "E-Mail account is compacted".
How do you do that?
I only know how to compact individual folders.

And why wouldn't moving something there actually *put* it *there* for
action?

If you select a message in your inbox, and click delete, the message
will be copied over to your trash folder. The version in your inbox will
then be marked as deleted and hidden from view.

This where I loose it..."copied"? Why isn't the message *moved* to the
Trash vise just being "removed from display"? That doesn't make any
logical sense to me - true or not...

Compacting a folder will command SeaMonkey to remove all messages from
that folder that are marked as deleted.

That makes sense - as long as it also globally removes all messages
marked as "deleted" and still not displayed. I don't see how it would
though, as it seems it will only compact the single specified Folder.

Empty Trash will not only hide all messages in the Trash folder from
view, but also remove them.

Which is what one would expect.

* Although it may not technically go through those steps. It seems
easier/faster to just remove all messages in the trash, regardless if
they are marked as deleted or not. It's the same result.

In light of the above, I can't see why I don't see "Compact All Folders"
requests when I have my invoke set at >20 Meg. I should think I'd see a
lot of them - I don't seem to see any at all.

I think I'm going to set my threshold lower - like >5 Meg - if this is
what is really going on.

Here's were terminology is important:
When you *copy anything to a new location it also remains in the old
location.

When you *cut anything and paste it to a new location it's gone from the
original location (it's moved).

The questions are:
1)When you delete from the inbox, you are cutting or copying?
Does the inbox need to be compacted?

2)When you delete from the sent folder, you are cutting or copying?
Does the inbox need to be compacted?

3)When you delete from the trash, you are cutting or copying?
I always thought that this was the only folder that needs compacting.

left-clicking on it. So I right-clicked, selected "restore," and there
was a SM browser window with dozens of tabs open, one for each time I
tried to open a link or attachment from SM mail. I had opened and

Your existing profiles may contain something you don't want.
Copying them and then putting them into a new installation may just
transfer the problem. (What IS the problem?)

You should be able to reinstall a new SM right over the old one.

BUTI would create a new profile first and see if all is Ok there.

Mozbackup is a GREAT program. I've been using is for about 8 years!
It will back up your profile files instead of you doing it manually.
It will then restore the files to the new installation.

BUT... You need to explain what you mean by "security breach"?
Does someone know your passwords?
Do you have malware or a virus?
Is it only SM that's affected?

One of the reasons I use seamonkey is that it allows me to keep my
profiles in any location I designate. I have my profiles in a location
outside the seamonkey install directory, and off of the C: drive. These
folders are backed up every night along with all of my other data (using
rsync). If I restore my OS from an image, or something like that, my
email and browser are usually not affected. The same goes for a full
re-install of windows.

I haven't used mozbackup because I try to avoid relying on additional
applications. My experience has been that simple file to file backups
are the most dependable. All that said, using mozbackup in the manner
suggested would not compromise the redundancy already in place. Worst
case, I can always re-import my profiles, so I don't mind trying other
solutions. I wish that seamonkey had a simpler import tool, like point
to a folder and say "import this one", instead of running from the
command line and all that.

I have a credit card that I use for online purchases only. That card
recently had a string of fraudulent charges run up on it, all of which
were online purchases from sites in Europe. My bank caught the charges
and flagged them as suspicious, so they never got past the pending
state. The charges have been canceled, along with the card. I am going
through some due diligence to make sure my system here hasn't been
compromised. Since these were online purchases, who ever used the card
would have needed to know the card number, name as printed on the card,
expiration date, card security number, and the entire correct billing
address. The two easiest places to acquire this data are from one of the
emerchants I made purchases from, or from my browser. There are very few
emerchants I do business with, and most of them are very reputable
(newegg, amazon, etc), but I still think an emerchant is the most likely
source. Still, I think it makes sense to look at my browser.

It would be nice if there was a way to scan all of the browser
components and do an MD5SUM to confirm that all of the .exe, .dat, and
.dll files are unmodified. I'm not sure where to look in the profile
folders to see if anything is amiss.

LMH

What programs do you have to scan for spyware? That's a pretty good way
to take a look at the security of your browser.

I normally run Zone Alarm ISS (firewall and AV) and also have spybot SSD
installed. Along with a sofaware firewall router with AV, this has
always been enough.

I have run a full malware sweep based on the protocol recommended by
MajorGeeks (Super AntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, RootRepeal,
MGtools). Nothing was found in the sweep.

The fraud investigator at my bank said that it is unlikely that my
system is compromised. He said that some of the charges were rejected
because the all of the information given didn't match the card number.
He said that this was most likely a hacker trying random 16 digit
account numbers and random expiration dates. They keep trying
combinations by testing on small charges ($3 or less) until they get
something that authorizes. Once they have the combination they sell it.
Some places don't check if all of the data matches and just get an
authorization for the amount charged. Most of the places where the
number was used did check everything and canceled the order. It doesn't
look like anything got into my system here, otherwise they would have
had all of the information needed to use the card and not just the
number and expo date.

LMH

If SM is clean, go ahead and back it up with MozBackup.
Backup is simple and restoring is simple.

Avant is a shell over the Windows' Internet Explorer.
Be truthful. ;-)

Yes but it has many, many more features than IE.
It's way ahead of IE. For instance it had tab browsing with memory at
least 10 years ago. Also pop up and ad blockers 10 years ago.

The newest feature is the capability to extract and download videos from
a web site (including youtube).
I know there are programs that will do this but with Avant Browser it's
built in.

Also, there's some sites that need IE to work correctly.
And Yes, I know there are workarounds for SM that can be installed.

As long as we need IE once in a while Avant is an easier, better option.
(I my humble opinion (smile).)

I notice they didn't even include SeaMonkey in their test data (except
maybe as part of the Firefox sample, which in this case I have a sort of

Maybe _we_ would have scored higher than Opera if only we'd been tested

I have been using KMail for years, but recently switch all my email
newsletter distribution to seamonkey. There are two features that I
either am doing something wrong or are missing.

1. The ability to call the address book without starting either the
browser or email programs. (save time updating lists and contact
information).

2. in KMail after a message is sent , you can right click on the sent
message (in sent mail box) and have an option to send again, including
attachments. This saves time when I have five distribution lists that
have to be sent separately ( two many contact and ISP considers it spam
if all included) the send again feature allows you to change the To, CC
and Bcc fields for the new list.

Am I missing something or should I put in a feature request the
Bugzilla?

Thanks.

Try This:

Make a copy of the icon you use to start Moz. Then right click on it,
select Properties, and at the end of target add a space, then a dash,
and the word addressbook so it looks like this:

"C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe" -addressbook

Then to change icon go to:
Right click on it, select
Properties> Change icon> browse> local disk C> Program Files>
mozilla.org> Mozilla> chrome> icons> default

Pick second icon (addressbookWindow)

Now you can either leave it on your desktop or drag it to the "Quick
Start" tool bar.

If you leave it on your desktop rename it "Address Book".
If you drag it to Quick Start no rename necessary.

Yes, you can define multiple SMTP servers (at the Outgoing Server (SMTP)

Just select an account's main settings page then look for the "Outgoing

No, not really.

Do you mean under "Outgoing Server Settings" the Add button?

How serious or critical is it?

Not critical at all. It simply indicates that if you use the wrong

was there (the Outgoing server link and the complete 2nd email).

5)But... The 2nd email didn't work. The main email DID work.
6) Went back to regular mode.. 2nd email and Outgoing server link gone!

I have found the cause of the problem: Avast! Free Antivirus Mail Shield
settings. I will explain how I fixed it, but cannot interpret what it
means technically. I do not know how the "corruption" occurred during
the upgrade of SeaMonkey to v. 2.0.12. The areas where I did the repair
are , since

I went to the Avast Mail Shield menu window where I had previously
ticked the options to scan both incoming and outgoing mails. I then
opened the "expert settings" and saw that all three options there were
ticked - inbound mail (POP3, IMAP4), outbound mail (SMTP) and newsgroups
(NNTP). I then went to the "SSL accounts" submenu and found that my ISP,
verizon.net along with several others, but had the option "none" in the
encryption column.

I went back and unticked the option to scan outgoing mails and went to
see if my mails would now go through - and they did. I then re-ticked
the outgoing scan option and went to look at the SSL accounts submenu
again. The encryption option now was changed to "SSL", and all is
restored in SeaMonkey mails in the newly updated version.

I don't know if I could have avoided the steps I mentioned in my last
paragraph and instead changed the "none" to "SSL" on the verizon.net
line manually to achieve the same results. I leave that assessment to
the experts here.

Marisa

Correction, I had to go back and again untick the scanning of outgoing
email by Avast. I do not know why it worked for a short while and
malfunctioned again. Does Avast change the settings at will? In any
case, the "SSL" setting I described before appears to be wrong.

I tried Avast for a while. Didn't really like it.
It did some strange things.
Use AVG now and it works great!

Any other opinions on this?

Guys, contra an earlier report by me, I was able to download a SM

fine form-filler and password-rememberer with my browser. (To download
the adaptor, I simply overruled the SM browser's attempt to block it,
something which fooled and stymied me last time.)

However, the RoboForm Pro version I'm using is currently a version 6x. I
understand that a version 7x is available. Whether the SM adaptor works
with that I'm not sure.

I recently upgraded from SeaMonkey v1.1.19 to v2.0.11. I am not happy
with the new password manager. It has two problems:

1. Sometimes it won't show any of the information until I enter the

the purpose of having a password manager.

2. There are some https accounts where the old password manager worked
but the new one does not. It doesn't offer to save the password.

Unless this is something that is going to be fixed soon, I'm going to be
looking for a different password manager program. Can anyone suggest a
good one which is compatible with SeaMonkey, and preferably is freeware?

How big is your disk drive and do you have a 32 bit or a 64 bit computer?

Ok... The way I understand you are only limited by the size of your hard

In other words when the total of all SM mail and everything else on the

I'm using SeaMonkey/2.0.11 and there's no problem.
It must be on your end.
Which inbox is full?
The one that's on the server or the Seamonkey inbox?

I don't think there's a limit on the Seamonkey folders.
I have 3600 in my inbox, 830 in the sent folder
and 4500 in the trash folder

And that's only one of my two email addresses!

While you have your tabs open just click the X in the upper right of the

that to save tabs on closing

...but make sure you have the "warn me before closing windows with
