Of course I want the latest updates, and of course I want to install them as soon as it is convenient, but the reason I would like to be informed first is that I used SM for work. I don't want to be in a presentation to a room full of people, and when I start my browser to look up something online, it starts updating itself. That's going to #1 delay my progress and waste my viewers time, and #2, cause me to lose more time while I stop to notify my companies virus scanner that this new program that is installing itself is not a malignant program. It takes a few minutes for me to train the virus checker not to attack new versions of SM when they install. I just want to make sure I'm at a good stop point to do that. I don't let Microsoft automatically update my Windows system either. I let MS notify me that an update is available, and then, at a time of my choosing, I install the updates as soon as possible. It's not about being un-secure or un-safe on the internet... it's about allowing the user to stop whatever work he's doing at that moment, save his progress, and then apply the update when he is ready. I can't remember how far back it was (or what version it was), but I remember one of these SM udpates had an issue that was identified and quickly fixed. That update prompted, and I didn't install right away, but I was lucky enough to read the forums beforehand and waited until the fixed version went online. If everything had been auto-updated, that could have been a bigger problem than it turned out to be. Anyway, just my 2 cents. I appreciate all the work the SM team does, and I really like the software... but the option for a prompt would make the tool more pleasant for everyone involved. Thx, Antman008 My suggestion would be that when my SeaMonkey gets notified there is an update available, a screen pops up asking if we wanted to download and install the update, with buttons for Download Now, apply at next start up and Tell me next time I start up and Don't Bother Telling me, or that sort of thing, anyway. I can, sort of, see the point, but if there are still people using SM 1.x.x because they don't like some of the additional/subtractions, there might also be those that want to stick with 2.0.4 and not upgrade, but they don't get that option. Why? 2.0.x security updates don't introduce any functional changes, only security and stability updates as well as fixes to annoying actual bugs. I see no reason why anyone would want to stay on more broken releases with the same functionality. Perhaps because I don't want YOU to change MY system? Especially without asking me. This is the kind of thing for which Microsoft and other Big Brother type entities have been criticized. That an Open Source initiative should do it is, well, strange, to say the least. And, I will say, MS has given me the choice. Windows can be set to alert me to updates and ask me if I want to apply them. And I have the choice. It is MY computer. It is MY software. How much more simply can this be expressed? Do not screw with my system. Simply ask me. The default of automatically downloading a SM update (2.0.4 to 2.0.5 for example) without the user first authorizing the download is plain wrong. I suspect that the update url's, app.update.url etc strings could easily be changed by a trojan etc. app.update.url. We of course _trust_ that the auto update urls are secure and working, but the possibility still exists that these actions could be redirected to a trojan update.xml Then of course, what if you are purposely keeping the rev at a particular version (testing, problems with the updated version etc)? Or worse yet, if the update that you hadn't planned on installing fails? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update It's a system security issue! The update url's can easily be changed by a trojan et al. Further, the *user must* be in control of whether to perform an update or not. That said; Edit|Preferences|Advanced|Software Installation|Updates|uncheck 'SeaMonkey' will prevent this. This should be the default until SeaMonkey provides a proper Do you want to download type prompt. +1 to Ed Mullens post. ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey
