This being said, it seems a little bit unfair to state that the US is less interested than Europe or Asia in open standards. I was under the impression that HTML and XML are quite successful here! that was probably a inconsiderate statement of mine - I apologize. But with the notable exception of Vancouver, SVG Open was/is organized on the campus of some nice Universities (Tokyo, Enschede, Victoria,...). In the US, you will need to go after Companies to organize such a thing. You asked individual developers, and this won't do. I have nothing against more commercialization. I think it is necessary and there is more demand towards that direction. But I would not like the commercialization aspect to be overwhelming. And the conference should be affordable also to students and OS programmers (be it through rebates, scolarships or both). If there is more commercialization of the conference we have to ensure that the quality of the conference remains high. Otherwise we run into the risk that conference attendees can only talk to (sometimes technically incompetent) sales people and can't reach the developers and content creators. That said, I would welcome more commercial support in the conference, but in a controlled way. But you have to discuss these issues mainly with Kurt Cagle who also runs a separate forum for the conference preparation. If university people organize the SVG.Open conference you also have to take into account that these people (I include myself into that group) are probably not that experienced in marketing and would probably need a hand from you guys from the marketing world. On the other hand, using university facilities for cheap (or free in some cases) was/is also invaluable and I doubt if the first SVG.Open conferences would have made it without the help of universities. Besides, SVG on the desktop is still (at best) a few years away from being successful. SVG Mobile is the big thing here so unless we are ready to shift the focus from SVG desktop to SVG Mobile, it will be difficult to capture the attention of the US. Well, if you look at the proceedings and contributions of the past SVG.Open conferences SVG mobile was always very well represented. SVG mobile always had own tracks and a high percentage of the presentations covered that topic. I agree that one could discuss putting the mobile aspect into the conference title/subtitle or more prominently marketing that aspect. Doug, As always, you are well-informed. I agree with your evaluation of Kurt, his efforts, and Victoria. But you must understand that I believe that SVG can best be served by a serious US recognition at this time. Shucks, if the opening came to San Diego, I probably would have work SO hard to help it happen..I don't want this. I'd rather go to Victoria and enjoy its lovely environment. Anyway, if others feel that SVG would be best supported at this time by coming to San Diego U.S., and they can offer their support, then let that be an indicator...If none respond, then I am wrong in my assumptions. Francis --- In svg-developers@yahoogroups.com, Doug Schepers [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, Francis- Actually, as I learned at SO2005, the original location for SVG Open 2006 was slated to be San Francisco, but the plan had to be nixed. I think the reasons cited were a lack of local sponsors willing to commit early on (a serious blow) and trouble finding a venue that could keep costs down. Nobody else stepped up to the plate, and I am personally very appreciative to Kurt Cagle for jumping in at the last minute to arrange for it to be in Victoria, BC, Canada. He had to scramble to take care of those 2 things, and he did it well (though I'm sure there's still much to do on those accounts). Another factor, as I understand it, is that it can be rather difficult in this post-9-11 America for foreigners to get US visas on short notice (say, 3-6 months). This would threaten the number of possible attendees and presenters (who might not know whether their presentations were accepted until a few months beforehand). Besides, Victoria is beautiful, and it's easily reached from the US. I don't see how it threatens the US SVG market or American attendees at all. As for the US being the best market, just try to buy an SVG-enabled phone here. :( Plus? In Victoria? Kick-butt whale-watching rides on a zippy little zodiac! I didn't see any whales, but it was like a 2-hour long log-flume ride cracking over those waves. And I got to eat seaweed right out of the ocean. (The only thing I got in San Diego was a really bad case of sunburn...) It is a very challenging commitment for someone to undertake the organization of a conference, and while it's regrettable that not every need can be accomodated, I salute those who are willing to take on the task. Re: [svg-developers] Re: SVG Open 2006 San Diego?
Why not include the SVG Mobile within the SVG conference and make it a bigger impact. I work in planning events for organisers in the exhibition industry in the UK and have seen many sucesses where a smaller player (not saying SVG is a small player) is included within the event. For example, a large machinery show included a smaller exhibition alongside it called Tooling. The Tooling show expanded due to interests from the Machinery show and is now 30-40% of the overall exhibition. Maybe the same could be done for SVG where you have *The SVG Mobile and Desktop Conference 2006 *An Event showcasing mobile SVG and desktop products from major players such as company1...blahblah blah...loads of blahh etc.. the latest incompany massive...blah (hope you get my drift. I would say you will get more companies/developers exhibiting from both sides, okay so more may come from the mobile area but does not mean they will not be interested in the desktop side. Its only a thought but I presume the SVG Conference is a non-profit organisation so the budget is not there for marketing etc.. If whoever organises the event is interested in the above suggestion I could possibly ask contacts in the industry (leading event organisers) about how to move forward etc. and possibly any help they may give. Maybe an event that is currently ongoing in the mobile arena I could ask if they would include a seminar conference part to it etc... If I dont know someone, i pretty much know someone who does. If you dont ask you dont get so I will definitely suggest it to some people within the industry if the organisers of the SVG Conference are willing for me to ask. This being said, it seems a little bit unfair to state that the US is less interested than Europe or Asia in open standards. I was under the impression that HTML and XML are quite successful here! But with the notable exception of Vancouver, SVG Open was/is organized on the campus of some nice Universities (Tokyo, Enschede, Victoria,...). In the US, you will need to go after Companies to organize such a thing. You asked individual developers, and this won't do. Besides, SVG on the desktop is still (at best) a few years away from being successful. SVG Mobile is the big thing here so unless we are ready to shift the focus from SVG desktop to SVG Mobile, it will be difficult to capture the attention of the US. My 2 cents, with the others... I'll be happy to help with SVG open paris 2008 if any ... This would have to be confirmed but we could probably use INRIA conference center for free... RE: [svg-developers] Re: SVG Open 2006 San Diego?
_ From: Francis Hemsher Hi Andreas, your two cents are appreciated. For some reason, over the past few months, interest in SVG has shifted substanially from Europe/Asia to the US: I closely monitor calls to SVG-oriented sites. MB This sounds a little ominous and from a practical standpoint. how are you monitoring this for sites you don't own? (Unless of course, they publish their log files.) Since this is your data point, I'd love to understand it better. Michael _ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get Bzzzy!
