t-and-f: SID SINK & BILL SCOBEY

2002-01-28 Thread Mike Fanelli

Sink and Scobey are apparently still competing... just not necessarily on
the track or roads.

I continue to bump into them as regular bidders on track & field memorabilia
items on E-bay. Scobey, amazingly, has made 342 successful
transactions...must have quite the collection indeed!

WHERE ARE THEY NOW/Herb Washington/From fast to fast food/A's 'designated
runner' succeeds in business
Jorge L. Ortiz, Chronicle Staff Writer

There's something odd about Herb Washington being a member of the Major
League Baseball Players Alumni Association. Was he ever really a baseball
player?
Washington, the "designated runner" owner Charlie Finley foisted on his
world champion A's in 1974, never had a plate appearance in the majors,
never pitched or played the field.
Yet he owns a World Series ring and unquestionably left his mark on the
game as one of Finley's quirkiest ideas.
Washington was also smart enough to parlay the earnings from his one-plus
baseball seasons into a successful career as a businessman. The former
world record-holder in the 50- and 60-yard dashes is the founder and owner
of HLW Fastrack, a company that runs 22 McDonald's franchises in Ohio and
Western Pennsylvania.
Convinced the self-proclaimed "world's fastest human" could help the A's
win some games, Finley lured Washington off the track tour with a $45,000
offer, which did not go over well with Oakland players used to haggling
with the penurious owner.
Washington, who ran track and played football at Michigan State, had not
stepped on a diamond since high school, and he took some heat early on as
the A's got off to a slow start. But Catfish Hunter came to his defense at
a players meeting, and eventually Washington proved his usefulness by
stealing 29 bases (in 45 attempts) and scoring 29 runs in '74. However, he
got picked off in the A's only World Series loss to the Dodgers.
"I don't think (the resentment) was ever totally overcome," Washington
said.
"But I said it then and I'll say it again: Without a doubt, I earned
every
dime that I got."
In the process, Washington got to rub elbows with some of the greatest
baseball players of that era.
One time, Chicago White Sox first baseman Dick Allen, a noted horse
breeder,
felt his ankles while studying his leg structure, much as he would a
thoroughbred's.
There also was the time when gruff Yankees catcher Thurman Munson told
Washington before a game not to dare run on him, or he'd risk getting
embarrassed.
"Plus, my grandmother could throw you out," Washington recalled Munson
telling him.
So Washington got the call to run and stole second. In his haste,
Munson's
throw tailed and had no chance of nabbing him. The next day during batting
practice, Washington sidled up to Munson.
"So I said, 'Hey Thurman, there's a call for you in the clubhouse,' "
Washington recalled. " 'You kidding.' No, no, there's a call in there.
It's your grandmother. They're going to bring her up.' "
The good times in the majors didn't last long, as the A's concluded
Washington was too much of a luxury and waived him a month into the '75
season.
He went back to track briefly but his heart wasn't in it, so he took a
job
as an assistant director of personnel with Michigan Bell before purchasing
his first McDonald's franchise in 1981.
Now 50 and living in Boardman, Ohio, a suburb of Youngstown, Washington
stays abreast of sporting developments. He also follows the sporting
exploits of his 16-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter, who evidently
inherited his athletic genes.
As to the question of whether he was truly a baseball player, Washington
believes he could've been eventually, given his speed and athleticism.
"I felt like if I had spent the time in baseball that I did in track, I
could have played," he said. "I just had not done the kind of training
that was necessary to participate at that level."

t-and-f: was t&f FAMOUS...GRANDMA GOT RUN OVER BY A REINDEER

2001-12-13 Thread Mike Fanelli

A famous guy who currently runs t&f and road races is my teammate (Tamalpa
Runners in Marin County, CA)
Dr. Elmo (Elmo Shropshire) who sings "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer", a
much played holiday sing along song.

Another dude that comes to mind (and now I'm reaching ever deeper into the
esoteric) is Karsten Solheim. Solheim who came to SF to run the Hunter S
Thompson Fear & Loathing 50 Mile Run which I used to direct, is the founder
of Ping, a name of significance if you're a golf hack like I.

Re: t-and-f: Famous people who have run track?

2001-12-12 Thread Mike Fanelli

Carvey ran in hs @ San Mateo ,CA and possibly even at College of San
Mateo...plays drums on occasion with the Aggie band...I used to sell Robin
Williams his running shoes in the old days (when I was in that biz once upon
a time)...GREAT fun guy...ran at Tamalpais HS here in Mill Valley , CA
...don't know that he ran THAT fast...still loves the sport.

Other famous tracksters?? Didn't Michael Landon have the national h.s.
record in javelin...at least Jersey State Champ?? Alice Cooper a mid 4:20s
high school miler?? What about that dude who is now a Congressman in Kansas
who ran 3:51.1????

Re: t-and-f: marathon taper

2001-11-13 Thread Mike Fanelli

My past experience as coach and (once upon a time) marathoner is that
cutting back too much, as your friend suggests, leaves one feeling
lethargic.

I'd suggest something more along the lines of:
@ 80 mpw 80, 65, 50 with an emphasis on little higher quality (i.e.
shorter yet faster anaerobic threshold runs (assuming one is already doing
a/t runs) and cutting back on long run (but maybe part of that long run
being a bit faster than normal ...i.e. w/ 45 minutes of marathon race pace).

Three weeks out, one is still getting training benefits...over the final
nine or so days, the most benefit one can receive is from (relative) rest
and some easy sharpening.

t-and-f: LASSITER, DOWNIN, SCHWALD (was U.S. STEEPLECHASE RECORD SET!)

2001-07-02 Thread mike fanelli

Lassiter won the 1500 at 3:50.78 with Downin in second at 3:51.06. Schwald
ran 4:07.33 for 4th in her race. Apparently the weather was kind of
crappy..."an overcast and windy day" according to the report that I read.

Results from yesterday's meet in Glasgow include a national record in
women's steeplechase by Liz Jackson who was timed in 9:48.72. The previous
record was set just a week ago in Eugene at the USATF meet where Jackson
gave up her previous NR (9:49.73 '01 NCAA) in finishing second to Lisa Nye
(9:49.41. to 9:49.94).

Other highlights from Glasgow included a world leading 57'-11 1/4" TJ by

Re: t-and-f: Runners Form

2001-07-01 Thread mike fanelli

So, based on the Byron Dyce and Tom Derderian posts re: efficiency of form,
is it safe to assume that a guy like Canadian, Paul McCloy (a guy we called
3 lane McCloy because one had to go all the way out to lane three to get
around him and his "form"), may have actually been an efficient long
distance runner??

t-and-f: KRUMMENACKER IN 1500 @ WC??

2001-06-25 Thread mike fanelli

Should Downin, McMullen and/or Lassister not attain WC 1500 standards, would
Krummenacker have the option to run 1500 in Edmonton? He competed at USATF
Nationals as required (just not in that event) and he has a 3:36.15 standard
(also note that while Krummenacker is the 2001 USATF 800 champ, he
apparently does not have the A standard over 2 laps).

Do the USATF eligibility rules require that an athlete compete in the
National meet or is the requirement that an athlete compete in the specific
event at National meet for consideration to WC team??

PS yes, I am keenly aware that Jennings and Stember also have WC "A"
standards.

Am passing along the wit and wisdom of one of my HOOTIE
co-race directors, Peanut Harms

best,
Mike

Hello All...am busy training to finish the Hootie III and
thought I'd share my training with all of you.  Unlike alot of coaches I
provide "FULL DISCLOSURE" of the secrets which helped me run just a hair
over 7:05 pace in last year's runBEFORE I DO THAT I WANT TO PUT AN ALL
OUT BULLETIN (AND I NEED SOME HELP FROM GUYS LIKE SIEG, EDER, TJ, ETC. ETCTO
ALL FORMER FAMOUS AND NOT SO FAMOUS RUNNERS WHO WILL BE IN EUGENE NEXT
WEEKEND.Every year we run into a Doug Brown, Craig Virgin, Ron Addison,
Bruce Bickford, Placentia, Doris Brown, Julie Brown, Francie Larrieu, etc. etc.
who say, "Hell, I was there, I would've run but I didn't know about
it!!"...well, let's make sure these guys & gals don't have that same lame
ass excuse this yearTHOSE WHO KNOW THE E-MAILS OF THESE FORMER FAMOUS
FOLKS PLEASE SEE THAT THIS MESSAGE GETS SPREAD FAR AND WIDE...and let's
see if we can get these folksby the way,,,CENTROWITZ, SCHILLING, & EARL
JONES ARE IN!!
NOW THE TRAINING
As with any exercise program make sure you get a full check up prior to
starting a.  Don't start program too soon, June 16th or 17th
would be good...we don't want anyone getting shin splints b.
Hydrate with anything alcoholic 8-10 days prior to the race (you should have
already started!).  Your hardest day, drinking that is, is TWO DAYS PRIOR
TO THE RACE..THURSDAY... c.  Do not do anything that
remotely looks or feels like running anytime before the race...this will only
remind you of how bad off you are...train mentally through other people
running.watch them run, look at them hurt, listen to their complaining, then
hydrate with a frosty beverage to recover. d.  Approach the
morning of the race with confidence, coffee, and a Krispy Kreme doughnut...and
the knowledge that no matter how slow you are, if you continue this program you
can get alot slower for Hootie IV in Sacramento at Cross Country Nationals
2002! e.  Call home immediately after race and tell whoever you
call you ran alot faster than you actually did, just like you used to do when
you were competing f.  Repeat "b."
See you on the starting line fellow Hootiemeisters. Now go
start training Coach Nut

t-and-f: 2001 HOOTIE 5K in EUGENE 6/23 !!!

2001-06-15 Thread mike fanelli

SPREAD THE WORD!!!

WHAT: HOOTE 3.0
A 5K "race" (we use the term quite loosely) in conjunction with USATF
National Track and Field Championships. The "event" (we use the term quite
loosely) is officially unsactioned and includes a slew of non-sponsors. The
entry fee is zilch, the prizes are plentiful and weird, the attire is
extremely casual, the technology virtually non-existent (popsicle sticks
etc.) Divisions include first naked runner (VERY competitive... see past
results), first cross dresser, best cross dresser, slowest in relation to
their all time PR (malmo is the record holder here) and a new division for
2001, the centipede. There are sure to be many other divisional award
categories which we will make up on race day as we see "fit" (we use the
term quite loosely)

QUALIFICATIONS:
We have absolutely NO standards (A, B, provisional or otherwise). The
"event" is open to any schlepper or schlemiel who can drag their butts over
3.1 miles (approximately). No whiners. No crybabies.
Particularly welcome are USATF head honchos, journalists, USATF meet
qualifiers (how about some field eventers this year??) and the general cast
of knuckleheads that made HOOTIE 1.0 and 2.0 such a "success."

WHERE / WHEN:
Saturday, June 23rd 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot at Alton Baker Park (same
venue as 1999)...out and back on the bike path...awards ceremony to follow.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Joe Rubio, Brian McGuire (macman), Peanut Harms, malmo
(in absentia) and yours truly...plus a cast of characters who choose to
remain nameless/blameless.

N.B. results from 1999 and 200 have been posted separately

SPREAD THE WORD!!!

Re: t-and-f: McAfee, Fikes

2001-05-29 Thread mike fanelli

Fikes was actually referred to as Elton (vs Denis with one n)...probably
still is...went on to be a head honcho administrative type at Penn...for the
record, the skinny kid from Bishop McDevitt H.S. in Philadelphia who held
the finish line tape for the (then) momentous duel between Waldrop and Fikes
at Penn that year ('74 with Tony W. prevailing 3:53.2 to 3:55.0) was none
other than yours truly...the fact of the matter is that I still, to this
day, have that finish line tape (polyester wound string)!!!

once a geek, always...

t-and-f: "WEBBesque"

2001-05-29 Thread mike fanelli

I am still shaking my head in great bewilderment over the mighty Alan Webb
performance at Pre...one of THE most incredible performances...downright
spooky!

Four questions:

1 Does anyone know of an available videotape of the race?

2 Will our beloved TV commentators begin referring to certain performances
as being "Webbesque" instead of Beamonesque?

3 Will this mark lead a crusade of high schoolers into the big leagues
(along the lines of the media crediting Shorter's '72 marathon victory with
the launch of the running boom)?

4 Is the kid going to make the US team for Edmonton?? (I'm thinking YES!!)

At this past weekend's Oregon Twilight Meet one mile, Mike Miller was 1st in
3:57.13...Jason Pyrah finished mid pack in 4:06.

Two questions a) is this a PR for Miller (I remember him running fast last
year pre-trials...maybe at Santa Monica) and b)what's up with Pyrah? Did he
fall? Start late? Allergies??

t-and-f: MJ vs D MITCHELL IMPACT ON T&F (was BOOOO USATF = bad decision)

2001-05-09 Thread mike fanelli

Conway,

DO you REALLY believe that Dennis Mitchell has had as
positive an impact on the sport of track and field (which, in my opinion means
"has he created a significant, positive and heightened awareness of track and
field amongst the general public...not the track geeks on our list and those
that subscribe to the bible of our sport) as Michael Johnson???

My original point in this thread was that USATF which can
make a decision regarding a specific athlete and instance , chose to make one
(not allowing MJ to compete) that was not necessarily beneficial to the broad
promotion of the sport...end of story.

I understand your point ... And even agree with it in prinicpal ... But
let me play the devil's advocate and ask this question ... If Gail Devers made
an announcement that she would like to run on the 4x1 at this year's WC, but
she doesn't plan to run at Nationals this year, should she be allowed to run
on the team ??? Or even hitting closer to home for you, how about Dennis
Mitchell ??? Say Dennis makes an announcement that this will be his last year
in the sport, and that he would like to be the 3rd leg on this year's WC 4x1
??? Dennis states that he has clearly been one of the top 2 3rd legs in
history ... That he has served the US well in Olympic and WC competition, and
that he wants one last hurrah at the WCs ... What do you do ??? Gail and
Dennis have both done as much for the sport as MJ ... maybe more since both
have been in the sport longer than MJ ...Do you award a spot to MJ but turn
them down ?? If so why ?? If not at what point do you draw the line on such
  requests ???

My position is less MJ bashing (as I keep being labeled on this list) as
much as it is against the attempt at dictatorship of the sport by individual
athletes ... "I'm great so give me what I want" ... The sport has rules (and
ironically in this case the rules may actually favor MJ in reality) and I
guess I get irritated when we change them specifically to benefit an
individual at a time .. We change the order and times of events now in the
Olympics to favor an individual athlete as if that is going to make the event
so much greater ... Because so and so says if you do that I can achive
something historical ... Of course historical to me means you achieve it in
the same context that EVERYONE ELSE had to attempt it under, not as a made for
TV event ! I was against it when Carl Lewis used to make the same kind of
requests and I am still against it ... And ironically MJ should to put Carl
down for the same thing ... But then I guess what is right or wrong depends on
what side of the fence you are sitting on ...

As much as I would
love to jump on the bash wagon, I cannot. He may not have been the pr
boon, but his success and feats have done a lot for the betterment of
the sport.  I do not think that needs to be explained. As much as
we like to bitch about his lack of personality, and monotone delivery,
he is a respected announcer, and the fans love to see and hear him. Do
not mistake our fine tooth combing for the opinions of the general public.
MJ is a star, and he has done a lot for the sport in that regard.

t-and-f: BOOOOOOO!!!! USATF = BAD DECISION!!

2001-05-08 Thread mike fanelli

First of all, I am not a USATF basher (at least not since some old AAU days
when Pre and Shorter were being hassled...well and maybe some beefs with
Ollan Cassell). I firmly believe that our governing body has taken some
positive strides since Masback has taken the reins...good folks on board at
the top including the likes of Bill Roe and Carol McLatchieHOWEVER, I am
quite disappointed with USATF's decision to disallow the participation of
Michael Johnson on the World Championships 4 x 4 squad should he not compete
in Eugene's USATF Natls (June 21-24).

As a guy with a half dozen super premium finish line seats at that meet,
know, that I'd LOVE to see MJ in action in Eugene...yet, if it's not o his
agenda, so be it...first of all, USATF should recognize all that Michael
Johnson HAS done for track and field awareness in this country and tip their
hats to him on his farewell tour (in a show of sportsmanship and gratitude).
secondly, what's good for the sport internationally is good for the sport
locally...MJ in Edmonton is good for track and field PERIOD...I rest my
case!

t-and-f: THE BIG NIGHT...Stanford 10,000

2001-05-05 Thread mike fanelli

WOW...what a fabulous 10,000 last night at Stanford. The weather at 9:15
could not have been more ideal. The small stadium ambiance, energized crowd
and percussion section off the first turn made for the most exciting 10 that
I've ever witnessed (including a rain soaked 27:18 by Barrios in Berlin,
Virgin's AR 27:39 and the infamous Herb Lindsay/Craig Virgin duel at the '80
"Trials").

As hard as they went out (lots of 65s...unofficially 13:34 at halfway), I'd
have anticipated a higher attrition rate in the final kilos. Kennedy hung on
gamely to the orange singleted Kenyan clan over the first 5000...Meb
immediately off his shoulder. Kennedy was gapped by 5-10 meters a number of
times yet continued to reel the group back in.

Somewhere near 6K, Kennedy was clearly off the group and for reasons unknown
to me , pulled off the track, leaving a very aggressive Meb to respond to
the intense surging up front. With about 2000 to go the leaders were lapping
lots of guys (fast guys!!)...most of whom did not move out to lane 2...Meb
was running way out in 2 through the turns, costing him a precious second
or two for sure. When the leaders came trough at the bell at approximately
26 flat, the crowd was going wild...Meb about 11 or 12 seconds back.
Chebii's acceleration with about 250 meters remaining was INTENSE!! I swear
he must have run something like 25 point over the final 200.

...fastest time ever on US soil (eclipsing Geb's Atlanta Oly 27:07), a
serious (nearly 7 second) AR, NRs for Canada and Japan...some significant
PBs (i.e Culpepper)...all of this and more (i.e. Tim Broe's stadium
record/17 second PR @ 5000 over Matt Lane)...
not a bad little local all-comers meet. I'll go on the record saying that it
lived up to the advance local press/internet hype...AND THEN SOME!!!

See you in Eugene for HOOTIE 3.0

t-and-f: TOMMIE SMITH SELLING MEDAL

2001-04-25 Thread mike fanelli

I read a brief blurb last week where Tommie Smith was selling his medal ('68
Oly 200)
at auction for $500,000...anybody know anything more about this...i.e where
it's being auctioned?? E-bay? Sotheby's??

"Article" went on to say that he's had it in a drawer for thirty yeras and
has only looked at it less than 15 times. Kinda weird...kinda sad.

Yo t&f lister types

...who is this "prince" guy... is he like a Mike Fox, the former mythical
distance running figmentation of 67,000 posts ago, or, is this a legitimate
athlete spokesperson with a chip on his shoulder (or possibly
elsewhere)...re: sponsorship of athletes by a footwear company is concerned,
know that the rules have changed very little...budgets are all that has
changed...it always has been and always will be about visibility...either
local or bigger picture, with dollars spent adjusted
accordingly...re:medals, that is typically an athlete's bonus $$$
opportunity within a contract...the bottom line when determining who a
footwear company should spend cash dolars on amounts to who can make an
impact (i.e help a company at retail) within the above prescribed context.

Mike (used to be Reebok Marketing Dept. running/ track & field promotions
guy with mega dollars to spend on athlete/event promotions when Cap was
still an assistant at KU...and could probably write a book on the

t-and-f: SACTO TRIALS: GOOD & NOT SO GOOD

2001-02-22 Thread mike fanelli

The good news is that the Trials will be back in Sacto in '04...the bad news
is that the Trials are back in Sacto in '04. While I am pleased to have the
Trials in my Northern California backyard and by most accounts, last year's
meet was outstanding, the seating situation basically sucked. By this I mean
that the seating was so jam packed that once you made it to your seat, you
were stuck. Getting up for a "beverage" or pit stop was damn near
impossible...am hoping that the seating and enter/exit procedures are
improved down the road.

t-and-f: THE NAZI OLYMPICS

2001-02-06 Thread mike fanelli

Keith Conning's mention of the Nazi Olympic exhibition in
Chico, CA  got me thinking:

The Nazi Games are quite possibly the MOST historic of
all Olympics. Certainly each quadrennial event has it's own special
story/appeal...however, for a Berlin based Olympics to take place during that
particular snapshot in time...whooaaa...the stage was set...the mustachioed
Hitler versus Jesse O. (arguably the greatest athlete of the 20th
Century).

A number of years back I had the pleasure of attending the
Berlin ISTAF Meet in the Oly Stadium of '36...lots of impressive memories...as a
member of the press and friend of Arturo Barrios, I was there largely to cover
the 10,000. Barrios had set the WR at this meet, exactly one year prior. On this
partcular evening, the skies began dripping rain maybe 10 minutes prior to the
10 kilo aerobathon. Approximately 45 seconds after the starter's gun commenced
this 25 lapper, the "summer shower" turned into a C-grade hurricane. As the
meet officials signaled a mere 24 laps remaining, the Vegas bookies were paying
big bucks to beat thirty minutes. Lap after lap, Mexican road star, Marcos
Barreto leaned into the pounding wetness with Barrios tucked in
nicely, immediatel off of his right clavicle. Just as relentless as the
weather Barreto y Barrios hammered against the elements with the reigning world
record holder scoring an unbelievable 27:18 performance...just 10 seconds shy of
the (his) all-time best.

Maybe my coolest remembrance came a bit earlier in the
evening...I had a premonition that it'd be a special night upon departing
my cab just behind the Oly Stadium. My driver must have seen "track geek'
written all over me as he collected his fare at the intersection with the
avenue signed "Jesse Owens Alee".

regards,
Mike Fanelli

I drove 120 miles from Vacaville to Chico to see the exhibit today.
It was well worth the 240 mile round trip.  There is alot of
track content in the exhibit including  interviews with Marty
Glickman, who was taken off the 4x100 relay team; Milton Green (Harvard),
who boycotted the Games; John Woodruff, the 800 meter champion; and Gretel
Bergmann, a German Jewish high jump star, who was not allowed to compete
for the German team. It has a large section on African Americans in the
Games. Archie Williams, from the University of California, Berkeley, won
the 400-meter race with a mark of 46.5 seconds.  During World War II,
he served as an instructor for Black fighter pilots at the segregated army
airfield in Tuskegee, Alabama. The exhibit will next go to New York
and then to Salt Lake City for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.  If you

I'm thinkin that this battle is a mere skirmish...child's play in comparison

FYI, 6th placer at today's Footlocker (scroll down to see results below) is
the son of US marathoner Paul Pilkington. In speaking with Paul at last
month's NYC Marathon, he said that coaching and running with his son is
really the only reason that he continues to race today at the ripe old age
of 40+.

t-and-f: T&F HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

2000-11-30 Thread mike fanelli

Attached is a great piece from this morning's San Francisco Chronicle by
John Crumpacker (my favorite t&f journalist) regarding yesterday's induction
into the T&F Hall of Fame.

ps - The passing of Tupp is a sad one...a truly fine gentleman
indeed...while I currently reside in CA, my Philly area track and field
upbringing would not have been the same without mentors/friends like Jim
Tuppeny and Browning Ross.

TRACK AND FIELD/Seidler's Shot Lands In Track Hall of Fame
John Crumpacker

Describing herself as "a darn big girl," Maren Seidler competed in her
first track meet as an 11-year-old in what would be the start of a long
career as a shotputter.
Now 49, she was selected yesterday to the National Track & Field Hall of
Fame along with three others, bringing the membership total to 184 at the
Hall,
housed in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.
"It has an enormous amount of meaning," said Seidler, a longtime San Jose
resident who moved to Tucson, Ariz., several years ago. "I got a little
weepy, which is easy for me to do. It's very sweet."
Also chosen to track's Hall of Fame were former Oregon coach Bill
Dellinger,
66; Olympic sprinter Chandra Cheeseborough, 41; and 1976 Olympic long
jump
champion Arnie Robinson, 52. The four will be formally inducted into the
Hall of Fame on Saturday night in conjunction with USA Track & Field's
annual meeting in Albuquerque, N.M.
Seidler, a graduate of Tufts University, lived for many years in San Jose
while competing and after her retirement in 1980. She was a member of four
Olympic teams (1968, '72, '76 and the '80 team that was part of the United
States' boycott of the Olympics in Moscow).
She also was the first American woman to put the shot more than 60 feet.
She won 23 national titles and retired with a best effort of 62 feet, 7
3/4 inches.
"They just couldn't get rid of me for a long time," Seidler said. "I came
to the shot early. It was a happy marriage of my athletic ability and the
event."
After retiring, Seidler started a silk-screen T-shirt business in San
Jose
and counted the Santa Clara-based 49ers as one of her steady customers.
Now in Tucson, she retains the business.
While track and field is a largely corporate sport today, when Robinson
competed there was still room for creativity and whimsy. To honor his
hometown,
he created one of the greatest names for a track club ever: The San Diego
Southwest Ghetto Striders.
"I just created it out of fun," he said. "It wasn't a club. I was the
only
one on it."
Robinson won the bronze medal in the long jump at the 1972 Olympics, when
he was ranked No. 1 in the world. He returned four years later and won the
gold medal he believes he should have had in '72.
"I was chasing too many girls around," he said. "I went there to have a
good time and I lost focus. It's a sore point."
Cheeseborough made the '76 Olympic team as a high school athlete from
Jacksonville, Fla. She returned in '84 as a mature competitor and won a
silver medal in the 200 meters and golds in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
She's now head track and cross country coach at her alma mater, Tennessee
State. Dellinger, who retired in 1999, coached the Ducks to the 1984 NCAA
track championship and also won four cross country titles. As an athlete,
he won the bronze medal in the 5,000 meters in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He
is currently recovering from a stroke.

While I was a huge fan of the long haired, barrel chested miler and his
always ballsy racing style, I am forever indebted to him for the shoe named
after him...the Brooks John Walker RT1...it totally chewed the hell out of
my feet but carried me to a then (1979) breakthrough marathon performance of

which I explained away as being "the shoes"

  Kenny Moore wrote
an article for Sports Illustrated back in the 70's that still haunts me with
its beauty. Sorry, but my failing memory can't recall the date. It was
sometime after the Munich Olympics, and likely before Montreal. The title was
"An Enigma Wrapped In Glory", the author, Kenny Moore. The subject was Lasse
Viren, and it painted a flawless portrait of a shy man's quiet life in
Finland, and his ensuing triumphs in track and field.

  Moore is a fine
wordsmith, great storyteller, and most certainly knows his subject matter. I
assume there's Irish blood running in his veins. And like the endless list of
great Irish writers both past and present, he has that special gift of giving
  life to words on paper.

  I wish he'd write a
running novel. There's little doubt in my mind that he'd shame the rest of us
  who have attempted the same.

t-and-f: PRE- NCAA XC UNDERCLASSMEN/WOMEN

2000-10-16 Thread mike fanelli

WOW!!!
A handful of frosh and soph athletes made quite a splash at this weekend's
pre-NCAA XC invite held in Ames, Iowa this past Saturday.

In the men's race, CO soph, Jorge Torres won by 17 SECONDS as soph
teamate, Steve Slattery nailed down 6th, holding off number one frosh
finisher, Louie Luchini, (Stanford) in 8th and Gtown soph, Mike Smith in
9th.

On the distaff side, Shalane Flanagan (NC) nabbed a 3rd place popsicle stick
behind senior winner Kara Wheeler, and just ahead of Amy Motimer (KSU soph)
in 4th with, Tuula Laitnen (Toledo frosh) in 5th??? (who she be? another
flying Finn?)

Regardless, the collegiate XC season is off with a bang and I typically dig
checkin on the frosh/soph transition from high school...it often tells a
story about our new distance talent developments to be.

t-and-f: MICHAEL JOHNSON MOVING TO CALIFORNIA

2000-10-06 Thread mike fanelli

As a real estate professional, I couldn't help but notice in this morning's
Wall Street Journal that Michael Johnson's Dallas home is on the market for
$1.4M...the blurb featuring his home sale goes on to say that he and his
wife will be moving right here to Marin County (immediately across the
Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco)...well, there goes the
neighborhood!!!

...wondering if the old man needs a track geek real estate broker???

Re: t-and-f: Pseudo-Scientific Facts for Suzy

2000-10-05 Thread mike fanelli

WHOA Kurt

While I may not be in complete agreement with Jim Hunt's take on the Suzy
factor, please know that Jim is one of the most reputable distance coaches
ever in the USA...In his many years as head coach at Humboldt State
University and also at UC Davis, Jim has been responsible for the fitness of
many many a champion...including 1988 Olympic Trials winner Mark Conover
(remember, Danny Grimes, Suzy Jones, Mark Covert, Gary Tuttle...)

At the track trials in Sacto this past summer we staged a coach's clinic
with the likes of Hunt, Frank Gagliano, Joe Vigil, Bob Sevene, Lance Harter
and Irv Ray...quite an impressive bunch...some of the absolute BEST
commentary from that clinic came from Jim...before we totally dismiss Jim's
theory as to the demise of Suzy, let's make sure that we understand that he
is NOT not some old dude smoking crack on a street corner in Biloxi...he
truly "gets" exercise phys and it's practical application to the middle and
long distance running athlete.

best always,

Mike Fanelli (who in his days as an "athlete" got whupped on pretty badly
by Hunt's boys)
