There was a time when this list was the only game in town--now there
are plenty of messageboards out there that have drawn away many of the
folks (including me) that used to post regularly here. You should take
a look at the messageboards at the following sites:

trackandfieldnews.com (Roger--lots of good pole vault talk)
dyestat.com not just for preps--they have college and elite
messageboards
letsrun.com--I'm not a fan, but they have had some good threads, most
recently a tribute to Bob Kennedy

The only other sibling relay that I'm aware of involved the Dyce
brothers-Byron(2-time NCAA 800/880 champ), Dennis, Trevor, and ?--they
ran an indoor 4x400 relay (Meadowlands?).

Subject: t-and-f: Sibling relays???

  Hello all,
This is a message for people with knowledge of (interest in)
sprinting/relays. I was wondering whether anybody has ever heard
of 'sibling relays'?

In The Netherlands, the AAC Amsterdam club team for the Dutch national
relays championships will consist of four brothers: Randy, Jermain,
Gregory and Valery Sedoc will try and break the (definately
unofficial, maybe non-existent?) family relay record in the 4x100
meters.

There is a very realistic chance for these four to at least break the
41second barrier. Certainly the first three athletes are very
accomplished athletes in their own right:
Randy ('75): LJ 7.72; TJ 15.00 (100/200 m: 10,63-10.55w/21.40-21.38w);
Jermaine ('77): TJ 15.51; LJ 7.50;
Gregory ('79): 110hurdles 13,51; LJ 7.82; 100m 10.75 (rarely ran);
Valery ('82?) is probably just as talented - he plays soccer
professionally in The Netherlands.
Also interesting: in the 70s, father Roy Sedoc was the Dutch record
holder in triple jump (with 16.01m, he is still fourth all time in The
Netherlands).

All replies greatly appreciated,
Regards, Wilmar Kortleever

Dan,
I'm sorry you had probelms with the webcast, but you are in the
distinct minority. Just check out the T&F News messageboard to see how
people went overboard in their praise of the wcsn coverage during the
World Championships. Sure, a few people had technical problems early
on, but once they were resolved, everything went fine.
If you're willing to give it another chance, I'll personally see to
it that you get the help you need (I'm doing the previews and recaps

Subject: t-and-f: WCSN coverage of Golden League

I ordered the WCSN package for the remaining Golden League meets,
having

skipped the World Championships coverage because:

a) I've been very unimpressed with webcasts in the past

b) my cable connection has been annoyingly slow the past 2-3 weeks

c) the PAX coverage was surprisingly good through most of the week

Comcast seemed to be picking back up the past few days and I was able to
access the WCSN site reasonably quickly, so I figured I'd give it a
shot.
Well, after ordering, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to
log

in and start watching. The only thing close is the "log in / register"
option, but all that did was take me to another payment page. Huh? I
finally swallowed my pride and called support with what I figured had to
be the stupidest question ever, and it turned out they had to do
something
at their end to get the system to recognize my computer. Hmph. Very
user

friendly.

Thinking things will now flow smoothly, I loaded up the player and
started

watching the feed, at which point I couldn't possibly have been more
disappointed. It was completely unwatchable! First up was the women's
800, and all I could see of the first 200m was them glitching on the
starting line, then frozen at about 50m, all the while the audio was
still

rolling. The men's javelin a bit later was better, but still froze
frequently.

To make matters worse, there doesn't appear to be any way to jump around
in the coverage until they archive it, presumably after the meet is
over.

But by then I would've already seen the results (gotta process them for
Fantasy League scoring) and would resent paying to watch a meet I
already

know the outcome of.

Also, someone mentioned during the Worlds coverage that you could
maximize
the window for more TV-like viewing, but I had no such option with
today's

feed. It was fixed at that lovely 3"x3" size that a graphing calculator
puts to shame.

So, I called back in a huff and cancelled the service, and I won't be
trying anything of the sort again any time soon. The service rep (who
of
course spoke marginal English) offered to troubleshoot the situation,
but
I was far beyond fed up at that point. I don't care if the package
costs

$1 or $100, I won't support anything that unfit for public consumption.
To those of you who have fared better, congratulations and I hope you
enjoy the coverage. I'll be bad mouthing WCSN every chance I get.

Re: t-and-f: What's so good . . . about an event so bad?

2005-08-14 Thread wmurphy25
The race also serves as the team-oriented World Cup, with the top three
from each team scoring (total time). Given the nature of the event,
five entrants increases the chances of a country having at least three
finishers.

Subject: t-and-f: What's so good . . . about an event so bad?

Or, to put it another way: Why should a country be allowed five
entrants in the marathon, when the maximum for every other event is
four?

Seven countries were permitted five entries in the men's marathon. Of
those, the highest ranked finisher was Japan's third place (also fourth
place). Of the remaining countries with five entries, the next-highest
finisher was Kenya's seventh place. Kenya's fifth entry, however, did
not finish the course. Nor did their fourth-place finisher. I could go
on (and will), but the very worst example of countries permitted five
entries was South Africa: none of whose runners finished?

Why, when it should be a life-long distinction for an athlete to even
qualify to compete in the world championships, should anyone gain that
distinction at a lesser level of requirement in the marathon than in
any other event? Especially, when one looks at the competitive
accomplishments of those fifth-choice athletes--

Countries with five entrants and their placings in the WC marathon:

Brazil 10, 33, 39, 41, (49)
Ethiopia 13, 19, 31, DNF, (DNF)
Italy 17, 35. DNF, DNF, (DNF)
Japan 3, 4, 14, 20, (28)
Kenya 7, 11, 29, DNF, (DNF)
South Africa DNF, DNF, DNF, DNF, (DNF)
United States 9, 22, 40, 51, (59)

Okay, I'll back off and let the old wheezies tell me about what's so
great about the marathon. But maybe they also can explain why one
country should be permitted five entrants, when none of the five can
complete the race.

I noticed that they tout "live coverage". This doesn't help me

Is there a way to see it "not live"?

Unlike the USATF and IAAF rules, which simply state that an athlete shall be

Richards had at least three "bad" steps in the 200 and at least four in the

As publisher of X-Country X-Press, I see results on a weekly basis during the fall

international runners competing here and came up with 121 Kenyans (58 at Div.I

representing 70 countries. Granted, not everyone is "taking" scholarships away from

t-and-f: I Left My Heart--at the Armory(Collegiate Invitational/Webb)

2003-02-13 Thread WMurphy25
If you're tired of reading threads about drugs in our sport, then take a few
minutes to read the ramblings of an old "sprinter"(used in the broadest
definition of the term) who longs for the good old days.

I Left My Heart--at the Armory

by Walt Murphy

Don't get me wrong--I love what I do. As a TV consultant, people actually pay
me to go to track meets. I get to travel, meet all of the great athletes in
our sport, and generally have a good time.

But there are times when I wish I was just a regular fan again and could go
to the meet of my choice. I'm in Fayetteville, Arkansas, right now, getting
ready for Saturday's Golden Spike meet, which will be shown on ESPN2 on
Sunday evening
(8-9pm-EST).

It will be a good meet, with Terrence Trammell once more trying to win the
sprint-hurdles double over world-class fields and Stacy Dragila trying not
just to improve her American Record in the pole vault, but to regain the
World mark that she lost last year.

But the track fan in me wants to be back home in NY, heading to my beloved
Armory on Friday and Saturday for the Collegiate Invitational, which is
presented by the NY Road Runners Club. Ah, the Armory, where I ran my first
race oh so many years (and splinters) ago, and where my love of track was
nurtured through the glory days of NY high school track in the 1960s.

Not only could this turn out to be the best collegiate meet of the indoor
season, it will also bring together many of my track buddies, much as the
Penn Relays does outdoors. Bob Hersh will be there, as will Dave Johnson, the
Director of the Penn Relays. And Mt SAC director Scott Davis and Bob Bettwy
are even coming in from California, for crying out loud, while I'm "stuck"
here in Fayetteville(not that there's anything wrong with that). I'll miss
the action on the track, but I'll also miss the post-meet gatherings at
Coogan's, the best "watering hole", bar none, on the track circuit.

Meet director Jack Pfeifer has done a great job in bringing in some of the
nation's strongest collegiate programs, including the men and women from
South Carolina, the Texas men's team, LSU, Villanova, Rice, Tennessee, and
many more. There will also be six high school relays and a handful of "open"
events.

Knowing that I wouldn't be able to make it to the meet, Jack has "tortured"
me for weeks with updates on which teams and individuals were coming in. And
Ian Brooks, who puts together many of the special "elite" races at the
Armory, did the same this past week when he let me know that Alan Webb would
be returning to the scene of his 3:59.86 in 2001 to run his first mile as a
"pro".

That was the final blow--I was there when Webb made history by becoming the
first prep to break 4-minutes indoors, and I was in Eugene when he ran
3:53.43 to break Jim Ryun's 36-year old outdoor prep record. Again, the fan
in me wants to be there if he does something "special" on Saturday.

And Webb, who had less than an auspicious outing in his professional debut
last week (his first race in 8 months) in Gainesville, where he ran 1:52.84
for 800-meters, said today on a phone hookup with the media that "I'm in
incredible shape, I'm just not in race shape yet". Still, it sounds like he's
ready to run fast. (The open mile is scheduled for about 3:40 on Saturday.)

If you can make it to the Armory early on Friday, you can watch the weight
throw (women-9:30, Men-Noon) and women's shot put(12:30). The rest of the
program begins at 2:30 and runs until 9:30pm.

There's been at least one better one-meet double by an American duo, but the marks

<< From Frank Litsky's column in today's NY Times:

When Stacy Dragila competes in the women's pole vault in the Millrose Games,

the heights of the bar, as usual, will be predetermined. But if only one

vaulter remains, the officials will be reminded that the predetermined

heights no longer matter. >>

For the record(and I don't usually do this), this was originally reported
yesterday in my e-mail newsletter, and I'm the one who shared the information
at yesterday's NY Track Writers lunch. It wasn't my intent to embarrass the
officials, but I felt it was worth reporting.

Humbly yours,

Walt Murphy

Here is what I sent out yesterday.

With all that went right with Saturday's adidas Boston Indoor Games--capacity
crowd, great fields, records, exciting races, and a fine live TV show(in my
humble opinion)--there was one glaring mistake, one which thankfully didn't
have major repurcussions..

Height progressions for the high jump and pole vault are pre-set by meet
officials and are usually geared towards arriving at a height that would
break a particular record(meet, American or World).

In Boston, the heights for the women's pole vault were establshed at
4.06(13-3 3/4), 4.21(13-9 3/4), 4.31(14-1 3/4), 4.41(14-5 1/2), and 4.51(14-9
1/2), with the understanding that Stacy Dragila, assuming she was the only
one left in the competition, could then have the bar set at whatever height
she wanted.

Dragila passed at 4.06, then cleared 4.21, 4.31, 4.41, and 4.51 on her first
jumps. Vanessa Boslak, who had set a French National Record with her 2nd-jump
clearance of 4.41/14-5 1/2, missed her 3 attempts at 4.51, leaving Dragila
alone in the competition.

The bar was then raised to 4.61/15-1 1/2, which was 1cm above Dragila's
world-leading mark set two weeks ago. Dragila cleared on her 2nd attempt, and
the bar was raised another 10cm to 4.71/15-5 1/2, 1cm above Dragila's
American Indoor Record.

Dragila got the new record on her first attempt, shortly after the crowd had
witnessed Regina Jacobs' world record in the 1500-meters.

Here's where the problem came in. Dragila assumed that the officials would
then set the bar at 4.76/15-7 1/4, which would be 1cm over Svetlana
Feofanova's then-world record of 4./75/15-7(Feofanova would raise her record
to 15-7 1/4 on Sunday).

However, the officials, keeping the same 10cm increments, set the bar at
4.81/15-9 1/4, which would equal Dragila's "absolute" world record(world
records can be set indoors or outdoors).

As part of my TV role, I'm always in contact with a "spotter" who keeps a
chart of the pole vault. When she told me they were raising the bar to 4.81,
and "15-9" was displayed on the infield, I asked her to check with the
officials. I was almost screaming into the headset, "It's too high--why
wouldn't she just go for 4.76?".
Peter Stubbs, Dragila's agent, sensing something was wrong, ran onto the
infield to question the officials.

By then, Dragila, apparently not realizing how high the bar was set, was p
reparing for her first attempt. The decision was made not to interrupt her,
and she missed on her one attempt at 4.81. Meet officials, realizing it was
their error, lowered the bar to 4.76 and allowed Dragila to take three jumps,
none of which were really close.

Dragila's failure to clear 4.76 helped avoid a potentially controversial
situation, since it wasn't immediately clear if she would have gotten credit
for a record if she had cleared on her final attempt after having three
consecutive misses(1-4.81, 2-4.76).

Dragila, who won a $10,000 bonus for her American Record, and her coach, Dave
Nielsen, weren't too upset with what happened, since they are both confident
that higher clearances will be forthcoming as the season progresses.

I received an e-mail from Roger Ruth last week, asking me to remind the Boston
officials about the new IAAF "peg" rule. I passed along his message to the meet
directors, who obviously took care of the situation. When I told Dragila about this at
the post-meet party in Boston, she told me to offer a big "Thank You" to Roger.

The adidas Boston Indoor Games, the first stop on USATF's Golden Spike Tour,
will take place on Saturday at Reggie Lewis Center (5pm-7:40pm). The meet
will be broadcast live on ESPN2 from 6-7pm(EST).

The Reggie Lewis Center only seats about 3,000 people, so if you're thinking
of going you should call 617-536-7030 for tickets. With all the headliners,
plus local heroes like Jonathon Riley and Shalane Flanagan running, the meet
should be a sellout.

As you can see, some events won't make the broadcast. At the time the
schedule was being put together, the women's 3000 (which may make the show in
highlight form) seemed a more attractive event than the men's 3000, which had
a late addition in Noah Ngeny, the 2000 Olympic 1500-meter champion.

In Litsky's obit, he refers to Brumel kicking a basketball rim. There's a great

t-and-f: Dropped Men's Programs-Updated List

Walt Murphy’s News and Results Service

Updates are coming in hot and heavy, so I thought I'd get out this latest
list.

Thanks to all of you who responded so quickly. Some programs (e.g., San Jose
State, Oregon State) were dropped a long time ago, before the current Title
IX-related frenzy. I'll leave it to others to determine what effect Title IX
had on the decisions that led to the more recent changes at these schools.

Bob's memory is better than mine (Garry Hill thinks it was the "Ugly Brown Book" that

t-and-f: Re: 1968 L.A. Trials 1500

2003-01-04 Thread WMurphy25
Keith Whitman wanted to know the results of the 1968 L.A. Trials 1500:

1.Dave Patrick 3:43.6
2.Sam Bair 3:43.7
3.Marty Liquori 3:44.2
4.Dave Wilborn 3:44.5
5.Jerry Richey 3:44.6
8.Tom Von Ruden 3:45.4
(Jim Ryun didn't run)

This race has always held a special place in my heart, since I won the
time-prediction contest that Track and Field News sponsored at the time. The
prize--nothing less than an all-expenses trip to the Mexico City Olympics.
Since I had already signed up for the T&FN tour, I brought my brother along
and we had a great time. I met Patrick many years later and told him that at
least someone benefitted from his win in L.A. He laughed, but I'm sure it
still hurts to think of what could have been.

As for the Tahoe race, I just had all of my 8mm film transferred to VHS, and
I actually have the finish stretch where Patrick throws his arms up in
frustration when he realized his Olympic dream was over.

It was fun looking at the Tahoe/Echo Summit footage, which I hadn't viewed
for 30 years. Some of it is typical home-movie quality, but there are some
great shots of the track, which was carved out of a mountian top. There were
more trees and boulders on the infield than I remembered, making for one of
the most unique settings ever for a track meet, let alone an Olympic Trials.

I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that I have relatively decent
footage of Bob Beamon's record jump in Mexico, complete with officials
bringing the traditional tape measure when they discovered that the optical
device wasn't set up to handle a
29-2 1/2(8.90) jump. I still remember looking in my "Little Red Book" to see
what 8.90 converted to and being afraid to say to those around me "29-2 1/2",
since that couldn't possibly be right!

Dave Patrick the 1500 man from Villanova got screwed in 1968 after thinking he had
secured a berth on the U.S. team after winning the "first" Trials race in L.A. The
selection "rules" were changed before the second set of Trials were held in Lake
Tahoe, where a frustrated Patrick finished a non-qualifying 4th behind Jim Ryun, a
young Marty Liquori, and Tom Von Ruden. Patrick had beaten Ryun in the 1/2-mile(and

Couple of notes on Track and Field News's Rankings for the 2002 season.

David Krummenacker is the first man to be ranked #1 in the U.S. in the 800
and 1500 since Rick Wohlhuter sat at the top of both events in 1976.
Wohlhuter was also #1 in both in 1974. The only other same-year doubler was
Jim Ryun (1966), while Dave Wottle was #1 in the 800 in 1972, #1 in the 1500
in 1973. Krummenacker's #3-World Ranking in the 800 is the best by an
American since 1994, when Mark Everett was also picked #3.
It's pointed out that Benjamin Limo's 3000 world leader of 7:34.72 is the
slowest since 1990, but Leonard Byrd's 44.45 is the slowest 400 leader since
1985, when Michael Franks led the world with 44.47. (Where have you gone,
Michael Johnson?)

For those of you who haven't seen the magazine yet(or worse yet, don't
subscribe), Paula Radcliffe and Hicham El Guerrouj(edging Khalid Khannouchi)
are the choices for Athletes of the Year.

Speaking of Hayes's impact with the Cowboys, Zimmerman writes, "And when the
rest of the NFL saw how he stretched defenses and forced them to go to all
sorts of zones to try to stop him, general managers pored over copies of
Track and Field News and sent out their invites".

Zimmerman also gives credit to the mag's writers for the oft-reported relay
split of 8.6(or 8.8).

t-and-f: Remembering Bob Hayes

2002-09-20 Thread WMurphy25

Bob Hayes was one of my early sports heroes. I first saw him run at NY's
Madison Square Garden during the winter of 1964, when he won the 60-yard dash
at Millrose, the NYAC Games, and the U.S. Championships.

I had run at the Penn Relays in 1961, but hadn't given much thought of
returning to Franklin Field until it was announced early in 1964 that Hayes
would run the 100 and 220 yard sprints, events that were added to the Relays
to showcase him during the Olympic year. I had to go, and my hero didn't
disappoint, winning the 100 in 9.3, the 220 in 20.6. My trip to Philly also
got me hooked on the Relays, which I haven't missed since.

I travelled to Tokyo with the Track and Field News Tour to see my first
Olympics. SInce it was Japan, and the price was right, I bought a Canon 8mm
movie camera to record all of the action. The friendly sales clerk loaded my
first roll of film for me, and I was ready to go. The men's 100 was early in
the program, and I excitedly filmed Hayes' great win in the 100 (out of lane
1 on cinders). My joy turned to horror when I opened the camera to turn the
film over, only to discover that it hadn't been loaded properly! Oh, well.

The first time Hayes came into NY with his Dallas Cowboy teammates to play
the Giants, he stayed at the same hotel in which the company I was working
for at the time was having its Christmas party. I had never gotten an
autograph before, but when I saw him in the lobby, I couldn't pass up the
opportunity to get Bullet Bob's(lost long ago).

My final personal memory of Hayes came at a later Giants-Cowboys game at
Yankee Stadium(a lifelong NY'er, I was a Cowboys fan because of Hayes). It
was a great moment, as Giants defensive back Henry Carr, who won the 200 in
Tokyo, vainly chased Hayes on a 40-yard pass play that resulted in a
touchdown. (At least that's the way I remember it).

too much of quick reaction times, and he agreed, proceeding to give a
demonstration of what Montgomery talked about yesterday.

I'm sure coaches and athletes knew this along, and maybe it was obvious to
others, but it was a revelation to this long-time follower of the sport.

t-and-f: Track and Field in Sports Illustrated

2002-09-12 Thread WMurphy25

After being a subscriber to Sports Illustrated for decades, I let my
subscription lapse a few years ago when it became apparent that the "powers
that be" at the magazine no longer cared about track and field.

I was given a free subcription earlier this year and have been pleasantly
surprised at the coverage given our sport during the summer. They have had
two-page "Inside Track" features the last two months (July 29 and August 26)
and the articles have been informative and current. The last one featured Tim
Montgomery, triple jumper Juliana Perez, David Krummenacker, and Suzy Favor
Hamilton. So far Brian Cazeneuve and Merrell Noden, both of whom have written
about the sport for years, have provided the coverage, and word is that SI's
new editor, Terry McDonell, is much more favorably inclined toward track than
some of his predecessors.

If you'd like to see more of this coverage, it would be a good idea to write
to Sports Illustrated and let them know that their track and field
"renaissance" is appreciated(I know I plan to renew my subscription when the
time comes). The magazine says letters to the editor can be e-mailed to

The final stop on the IAAF Golden League tour will take place tonight in
Berlin. EPSN2's coverage will be shown late Saturday night(1am-Eastern,
10pm-West Coast). The plan is to include the finish of that great Brussels
10k.

Hicham El Guerrouj(1500), Marion Jones(100), Ana Guevara(400), and Felix
Sanchez(400h) have won their respective events at all six of the previous GL
meets. If they win tonight, they will share in the 50kg of gold
jackpot(roughly $500,000).

For the record, the last lap of the 10k in Brussels was supposed to be in the
ESPN2 show, although not originally.

When you're trying to cram as much action as possible into a 1-hour
show(actually about 47 minutes when you take out the commercials, etc.), a
producer has to have a "game plan" going in, with every segment timed to the
second.

Flexibility is always there, so when the 10k turned out the way it did, time
had to be found to get at least some portion of it in the show.

Since the world record hadn't been threatened, I had pushed to treat the
men's 1500 in "highlight" fashion, meaning that you would see the last 2-1/2
to three laps, with no introduction. After some trimming here and there in
other elements of the show, the producer felt that we could get the whole
race in, as well as the last lap of the 10k.

It was the responsibility of someone else to put together the final
"highlights" package, which would include the 10k and some other events. That
person, with a set amount of time to work with (about 3-1/2 minutes), soon
realized that the package was going to be longer than expected, and decided
to cut the 10k!

Since we were working under a tight deadline to get the show on the air, it
was too late to do anything about it when the rest of us discovered what had
been done. It was a classic case of "failure to communicate".

Those of us working on the Golden League series take pride in putting out
good shows, so it hurts a little when something like this happens.

2002-08-29 Thread WMurphy25

Walt Murphy's News and Results Service

I realize we have to look at denials with a cautious eye, but here is what
Reuters reported:

Boulami told Morocco's official news agency MAP that he was shocked at
the test result and vowed to prove his innocence.

"How can I be accused of taking a banned substance when I regularly undergo
medical tests, the number of which have multiplied since I first beat the
world record last year?," he said.

"I train in high altitude in Ifrane (Morocco) four to five months a year,
that's the only doping I could be accused of.

"I'll wait for the result of the other (B sample) test and I am willing to
undergo all kinds of tests."

(Brussels) meeting organiser Wilfried Meert told journalists at a news
conference with U.S sprinter Marion Jones on Thursday that he refused to
condemn Boulami until all the circumstances were clear and the Moroccan's 'B'
sample had been tested.

"It's never much fun for a sport -- any sport -- to hear of a positive test,
but it's even sadder when it's a top level athlete, a world record holder,"
he said.

Speaking last Sunday at a news conference in his home city of Safi, on the
Atlantic coast, Boulami said that "drugs never made champions."

"As far as I know, the fact that a Moroccan athlete breaks a record never
raised an eyebrow. This is due to the world's respect for our country and our
sportsmen."

The press briefing was organised on the sidelines of a ceremony during which
Boulami received a congratulation letter from King Mohammed on his latest
world record.

He attributed his rise to athletics stardom after years of lacklustre
performances to a new-found confidence.

"I was afraid of the Kenyans. But this year I was confident of being able to
break the world record 400 metres before the finish line," he said.

t-and-f: Field Event Results

2002-07-21 Thread WMurphy25

(This is posted on behalf of Don Schlesinger, who is having trouble posting
to the t-and-f list. You can reply to him directly at D [EMAIL PROTECTED])

If you're a horizontal-jumps enthusiast, as I am, you must share with me a
certain frustration when trying to read current-day performance boards, while
following a competition. Of course, I'm talking about the inability, under
the present configuration, of the boards to display the precise imperial
measurement of the jump, to the nearest quarter of an inch. (Yes, metric
lovers, I know you have no such problem!)

As you all know, standard boards have four panels to display first the two
digits for the feet and then, potentially, two more digits for the inches.
There are ten push-tabs for each integer, which permit the poster to select
the appropriate numbers. Thus, for 22 feet, 6 inches, the official selects
2-2-0-6 (or, alternatively, leaves the third column blank, with no digit
displayed, or posts 2-2-6--, leaving the fourth column blank), and for, say,
23 feet 11 inches, the judge posts 2-3-1-1. The problem? We aren't
permitted to know any fractions of an inch. There is no way to display , ,
or of an inch, under the present board configurations, and so, the
fractions are simply dropped. Worse still, from time to time, fractions such
as are actually erroneously rounded up, to the next-highest inch!

My suggestion is as innovative as it is simple to implement, and I'm
astounded that no company has seen fit to market such a product up until now.
Leave the first two columns alone. Add two extra tabs to the third column,
to provide for a single panel that will express not only the ten single
digits from 0 to 9, but also the numbers 10 and 11. For the fourth column,
remove the current ten available digits and replace them with the three
fractions, either in the aforementioned fractional form, or perhaps with
their decimal equivalents, .25, .50, and .75, which may be easier to read
from a distance.

If anything, the board might be even cheaper to manufacture, as the current
40 tabs would be replaced by five fewer, or 35 in all. I see no apparent
drawbacks, other than the obvious fact that the "10" and "11" panels, for
inches, would be slightly more crowded looking than their single-digit
counterparts. So what!

I urge some member of the group who works at a company that produces
performance boards to seriously consider my proposal. I'm certainly not
looking for any royalties or patenting fees. My "payment" would be in the
form of the enhanced enjoyment that tens of thousands of spectators,
athletes, and coaches would derive from being able to follow the jumps events
more carefully. I hope that someone will see fit to create such a prototype
board, and nothing would please me more than to see it replace the current
models as the new standard for performance boards, across the country. Don't
you all think it's about time?

t-and-f: TV-Humble Pie/False Starts

2002-06-04 Thread WMurphy25

One of the things that I do when doing my TV ''thing" is prepare a sheet for
each event, complete with records, lane assignments, and 2-3 lines(or more)
of info on each athlete.

I like to think I do a pretty good job, but, just in case I get too
complacent, I occasionally get reminded of my lack of infallibility. Dwight
Stones is great for picking out the occasional typo, or outright mistake, and
he was joined in recent weeks by two new members of the "Critics Corner".

At the Prefontaine Classic, none other than Bob Kennedy politely pointed out
that I had the wrong site for his American Record in the 5000.

The best (or worst) example of getting caught in a mistake came this past
Saturday at the NCAA Championships. Marion Jones, working as a commentator
for CBS, came over to me before the night's events began and pointed at the
records panel on my sheet for the women's 100. "Let's see", she began, "World
leader is Chandra Sturrup at 11.01, and the U.S. leader is LaTasha Jenkins at
11.05".

I had gotten those marks from the IAAF website, so I wasn't sure what she was
getting at. She pointed at them again, and, with a grin on her face, said,
"You don't get it, do you--how about 10.90, Marion Jones, Prefontaine
Classic"!Do! I could blame the IAAF for not updating its lists, but I
had been at Pre and forgot all about Marion's mark.

And now that I've had a week to calm down(sort of), let me restate TV's
position on false starts. I stand by my original objection to the
"perception" that false starts are regularly shown on taped shows in the U.S.
It's a matter of policy on every network that false starts "don't exist" in
such shows. Does this mean that they're NEVER shown? No, but if they are,
it's the exception, rather than the rule, and it's usually done to enhance
the story of the particular event.

 >>

Dan,
As long as everyone knows that it's you who is wrong. Even if you have seen
false-starts on a taped show sometime in the past, it hasn't happened in
recent years(with rare exceptions for the reasons I stated in my previous
post--and I can't remember the last time it happened), and I just don't
understand why you and others keep bringing it up.

As for who decides what is integral, you can bet we would show false starts
if a Maurice Greene or a Marion Jones was dq'd. And false starts get a
mention(but that's all) when we have to explain an open lane, as when Jon
Drummond was dq'd on Sunday. Otherwise, they don't exist in a taped show.

Because that's just what it is--a perception Since I work on 99.9% of the
track shows that air on CBS,NBC,ABC,ESPN,TNT,Nick at Nite, The Food
Channel(you get my point), I can categorically deny that false starts are
routinely shown on taped shows. The only time they would be shown is when
they become an integral part of the story of the event.

There is always a pre-meet production meeting and that issue is raised every
time--"False starts don't exist in our show". If there is a false start, the
announcers will usually do what's called a "re-set", in which they redo the
entire introduction to the event--records, lane assignments, etc. That is why
you sometimes see a delay(if you're at the particular event) in the runners
getting back into their blocks.

Bring on your criticism if you will, but please get your facts straight
before you do.

I'll keep saying this until it gets through to people. The only time that TV
makes you "sit through" false starts is when it's a live show, or when a
false start(s) becomes part of the story. False starts are basically
ignored in taped shows(at least the ones that I work on).

Weather looks great--high 60s, no rain, no pollen! No Alan Webb this year,
