Well, Dave. When you cite an example such as your previous employer
you're opening a Pandora's box of an enormous gray zone. What the owner
of that company did was to the extreme. And it got him exactly what he
deserved.

But there's no avoiding bugs and inaccessibility when we're dealing with
new operating systems and browsers. And no matter how hard these
companies push their PR machines to show how cuddly and kind they are to
the blind and other disabled communities it's all just that. To a
multi-billion dollar company we are worthless. Absolutely worthless.
That is the hard reality in such a business world. Their jobs would all
be much easier without us. Our purchasing power is equivalent to adding
or subtracting pennies from the national reserves.

It's all about money, competition, and the market today. I'm astounded
to see how much customer service has plummeted in every industry, bar
none, over the last 20 - 30 years overall. And they're all very well
aware that if all their competitors do the same then we have no
recourse, particularly in this situation where we really only have two
choices: Microsoft or Apple. To me personally, I have one choice:
Microsoft. VoiceOver is great on my phone. But as much as Apple lovers
try to rave about it there's no doubt that if I were go to Apple for my
real computing it would be an enormous sacrifice. It has no flexibility
or script ability and you do everything one way: their way.

So I'm perfectly willing and have no problem with waiting for the kinks
to be ironed out in Windows 10. If any of the complainers can give me
one truly valid reason for their need to upgrade to Windows 10 the day
it came out I'll give them a million bucks. I've been in this game since
day one and have yet to see the perfect initial release of anything. If
I had an extra system kicking around to play with, sure, I'd install
Windows 10 simply out of curiosity. But I have no faith or expectation
in any new operating system.

Although with that having had been said, I will say that the rush to
market mentality has gotten significantly worse over the years. And
again it's all driven by the money and the market. Microsoft has never
been famous for their quality. But Apple has and look at them. Their
record breaking sales and profits continue to rise while their quality
falls. In recent years problems have been on the rise in their desktops
and laptops, iOS 9 is more or less a rewrite of iOS 8. And the upcoming
iPhone 6S has been structurally re-engineered to correct an inexcusable
unsafe product. And yet we still buy it all or install it. So we share
the blame.

The computer/internet evolution has created a world of addicts. And here
we sit whining about bad dope and will do it all over again the next
time around. So where's the incentive? There's no such thing in a
virtual monopoly. It's a high-tech form of slavery. That is unless you
want to go live in a cabin on Golden Pond, stoke your fire, hunt down
your meals and grow your crops, bathe in the brook, sit on the porch,
smoke your pipe, sip your herbal tea, and ponder the magnificence of the
universe. And to be honest, part of me wouldn't mind doing just that.
Life sure would be a lot easier. And be it that I do live on a lake and
am at the moment listening to the crickets chirp and the frogs croak,
maybe I'll take one of my guitars outside and see if I can improvise
along with them and reach a higher state of consciousness in concert
with the cosmos. (grin)

Accessibility: A Reality Check

2015-08-13 Thread Peter Duran via Talk
What's this second class citizen nonsense? What's this poor me attitude?
I don't get it!

The basic fact is: A major release of a product always has problems because
of the sheer complexity of the product. That's the way it is so get over
it! It has nothing to do with accessibility or the lack of. It has nothing
to do with economic status, race, religion, sexual orientation, or the
weather!

No doubt, there are hundreds of things about Windows 10 that are bugging
millions of sighted users at present; get over it; get real; stop whining!
They will get fixed; just wait for the next release if you are so unhappy.

Both Apple and Microsoft are committed to accessibility for their products;
it's good business; it's the federal law! The W3C Consortium sets
accessibility standards worldwide, and the big companies try to meet them
and keep up. Complexity is the enemy not Apple, Microsoft, Google, and so
on.

The problem: The more folks have, the more they want. Back when I was a
college student, I relied on the technology at the time, books recorded on
cassettes. I had to rewind tapes over and over again to find the stuff I
needed to read for class the next day, a laborious process indeed. Now, I
perform similar tasks, but with an accessible computer using search
commands, and get annoyed when a search takes more than a few seconds. Go
figure!

Google surveys show that users get frustrated if Google searches take more
than 10 seconds; sighted people whine too when frustrated.

Every time GW Micro releases a major upgrade, this list becomes a whine
list which makes me need a gin and tonic. I can't wait for the fixes to
Windows 10; thereafter, amazing accessibility will be available on a
multitude of devices: computers, tablets, smart phones, and who knows what
else. And the great thing, Microsoft will have a single user interface
across devices so I will need to learn only one set of commands to work with
them all.

Someone on this list just complained about the ribbon bar now in some more
Windows apps; well, Microsoft is trying to unify its user interface and thus
simplify the user experience. Yeah, people don't like to change; my sighted
wife hates Word 2013 because she doesn't know how to use the ribbon bar, and
she refuses to read my tutorial about it. That's her problem, not
Microsoft's!

Alex,

Good point. This is why we observe the Microsoft rule in this house,
waiting at least six months before upgrading. That way, others have found
the bugs and they have been fixed.

You are never going to be able to release a 100% bug-free piece of software
as developers cannot test absolutely every instance of how that software
will be used. If you even tried, nothing would ever be released. That beign
said, Microsoft should have released Edge with accessibility but did not and
they know it which is why they gave the recommendations they did.

I may be an intermediate user who gets frustrated; but my husband, who is a
software developer and tester, will always remind me of the above.

You are apparently unaware of the history at Microsoft! Yeah, the Narrator

accessible products, as Bill Gates announced at a Microsoft conference over

Don't you remember the announcement a year or so ago from GW Micro when they
unvaled their joint partnership of screen reader accessibility.

Microsoft has bundled Window-Eyes with Office products and gives them a way

Actually, the only communities that are legally discriminated against the
communities that have people who are disabled. You actually think, that
Microsoft cares about accessibility? Narrator didn't even become anything
usable until Windows 8. It will never be up to the standards of a
Window-Eyes, or even NVDA, because Microsoft absolutely does not want to do
anything. Apple on the other hand, has at least implemented a fully featured
screen reader and, on every device they create or ship, that screen reader
is available. Voiceover far out does anything that Microsoft word called
accessible. It is only because of companies like AI squared, that we even
have an accessible experience on windows.

The basic fact is: A major release of a product always has problems
because of the sheer complexity of the product. That's the way it is
so get over it! It has nothing to do with accessibility or the lack
of. It has nothing to do with economic status, race, religion, sexual
orientation, or the weather!

No doubt, there are hundreds of things about Windows 10 that are
bugging millions of sighted users at present; get over it; get real; stop

whining!

They will get fixed; just wait for the next release if you are so unhappy.

Both Apple and Microsoft are committed to accessibility for their
products; it's good business; it's the federal law! The W3C
Consortium sets accessibility standards worldwide, and the big
companies try to meet them and keep up. Complexity is the enemy not
Apple, Microsoft, Google, and so on.

The problem: The more folks have, the more they want. Back when I
was a college student, I relied on the technology at the time, books
recorded on cassettes. I had to rewind tapes over and over again to
find the stuff I needed to read for class the next day, a laborious
process indeed. Now, I perform similar tasks, but with an accessible
computer using search commands, and get annoyed when a search takes
more than a few seconds. Go figure!

Google surveys show that users get frustrated if Google searches take
more than 10 seconds; sighted people whine too when frustrated.

Every time GW Micro releases a major upgrade, this list becomes a
whine list which makes me need a gin and tonic. I can't wait for
the fixes to Windows 10; thereafter, amazing accessibility will be
available on a multitude of devices: computers, tablets, smart phones,
and who knows what else. And the great thing, Microsoft will have a
single user interface across devices so I will need to learn only one
set of commands to work with them all.

Someone on this list just complained about the ribbon bar now in
some more Windows apps; well, Microsoft is trying to unify its user
interface and thus simplify the user experience. Yeah, people don't
like to change; my sighted wife hates Word 2013 because she doesn't
know how to use the ribbon bar, and she refuses to read my tutorial
about it. That's her

Forgot to tell you if you do not have an SMA you will have to pay $49 to get
9.2 upgrade..

You have to have WE 9.2 on Win 10. If you have 9.1 you can order a CD for
9.2 or contact support for a link to download it. If you don't own 9.1
then you will have to pay for an upgrade to 9.2.

You have to do an upgrade before you can do a clean install, because you
have to retrieve the Win 10 product key. However there is an option
when

upgrading to keep nothing, I don't know if that is equivalent to a clean
install. If you have WE 9.1 you can order a CD of 9.2 or contact support
and they can give you a download link for 9.2, but if yu are not current
you will have to purchase the upgrade.

how can I get the latest WE? Can I do a download as well as an update?

PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS 10 - ANYONE HELP PLEASE

2015-08-13 Thread stephen thacker via Talk
Hi, I'm trying to help a company analyse a new portal (for
confidentiality purposes I cannot say much more about it)
however, it doesn't work with my Braillenote Apex due to its
ancient IE6 browser. I have we9.2.1 and Windows 10 on my machine
and as people know, Windows Edge isn't compatible yet, but
everytime I sTart IE using the search fart on the start menu, it
puts me in a search engine. What do I type now to put in a fresh
web address - it used to be control t but I did this and after a
few keystrokes about four, it was already searching and due to my
lack of Windows 10 knowledge, I'm struggling to know what to do
because I have a survey to fill in - I can answer question 1
easily but the rest afpertain to the portal I'm trying to get to
so can't answer.

I look forward to any help, thanks, Steve

Hi Peter and all:

Not only that, but Microsoft has chosen to make products accessible using a
different model than Apple. Microsoft wants to make it possible for 3rd
party vendors to develop accessible products, although the newer versions of
Narrator since Windows 8 come much closer to what Apple did with VoiceOver.
Did Microsoft mess up on the initial release of Windows Phone 7? Yes, but
from what I have heard they are correcting that, though I've not seen an
accessible Windows phone myself.

2015-08-13 Thread Marten Post Uiterweer via Talk
Hi,

With WE9.2 I have seen slowness in becky mail. This is in win10 32bit and win7
32bit.

When the computer starts, I start Becky mail and go to the list of messages.
There is a small delay when pressing arrow down to go to the next message.
Restarting Becky mail does not matter.

When restarting WE by pressing ctrl-alt-w, the small delay is away and arrowing
in the listview is fast as allways.

Can anyone reproduce this?

How is iTunes doing with WE 9.2?

2015-08-13 Thread Chris via Talk
I am one of those holdouts who has been avoiding losing my sidebar by upgrading
to the latest iTunes. Unfortunately, I am hoping to own one or more new gadgets
soon that will require me to bite the bullet and learn the iTunes 12 for
Windows interface.

So, how do things stand now with the latest itunes and Window Eyes 9.2? I am
trying to decide between holding out as long as possible and waiting to update
until I have the new iOS device or whether I should just update and start
learning how to use the new version so that I am used to it when I have to
learn the ins and outs of a new device. Opinions? Am I the last iTunes 11
holdout?

Thanks,

Chris

Sorry, I am not using 9.2, but I am using 9.1 with Becky, and while I do
not see sluggishness when Arrowing up or down in the list of email
messages, I do have the speech go completely away at times. A few times,
the speech comes back, but mostly, I end up needing to re boot. Three
or four times, I have been able to re start 9.1 with the Alt Ctrl W

Two or three times, I have had speech return without me doing anything
but not touching the keyboard for a minute or more.

I am a very quick typist, and sometimes I wonder if I am typing too fast
for Win eyes to keep up? I do not have the Screen Reader speaking typed

Re: slower in becky mail

2015-08-13 Thread via Talk
Hi chris,

I use Becky, and you can find this email program by running a search for
Becky email.

It is not Free, but will cost you $40.

There is a 30 day Trial period, and after that you get three screens
that pop up every time you start Becky, telling you that Becky is not
FreeWare, but that you need to purchase it etc.

I didn't like Windows Live Mail, or Thunderbird. Becky is Alright. It
works well, and I find the Spell Checker to work well enough. Someone
on here was asking about how they could read which word is mis spelled,
on my system, I just press, CTRL and the Number 5 key in the far right
Number pad on most desk top keyboards. The same command to read the
line.

This tells me the mis spelled word. I then tab once to the Spelling
suggestions, which is a list of about 20 possible words. Arrow up or
down, till you find the correct word, press CTRL C and the mis spelled
word has been replaced.

Becky has its quirks, but I like it better than WLM or Thunderbird. But,
your own Milage may vary.

I'd give you the web site, but I just do not recall what it is. I found
it easily enough by running a search for Becky email.

The download was simple and the install was simple. Setting up the
program was a bit more involved, and it took me a while to find where to
type in the Ports and other settings. Mostly it was me just not knowing
enough about what to look for, rather than a poor design of the program.

Robin,
My first recommendation would be to try different Window-Eyes mouse
boundaries to see if that helps. Maybe you accidentally changed the
Window-Eyes mouse boundary to a setting that you normally don't use. The
hotkey to cycle among the options is Control-Shift-B.

Subject: Mouse keys are not working as they used to

Hi - My mouse keys aren't working as they used to and I'm not sure what I
may have done or what changed. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit and WE 9.1. I think
this started a couple days ago, but I can't be sure. Here are some
examples.

1. If I'm in a Windows Explorer view, hitting numpad 7 used to take me
to the very top of the window on the title bar. Now hitting numpad 7 says
top left, but it takes me to the beginning of the first file or folder name
in the view. Numpad 1 takes me to the last folder or file.

2. In my Outlook 2010 inbox, I'm taken to the top of my inbox with the
point sitting on one of the icons just left of From on the column headers.
Numpad 1 takes me to the last message in my inbox.

3. I use Cisco Jabber for instant messaging and have to use mouse
pointer to read much of it. Numpad 7 used to take me to the top of the
window where I could use numpad 2 to go down the window and see who was
messaging me and the status. I can't get this to work at all. I cannot
figure out where the pointer goes when I hit numpad 7 and it just dings if I
try to use mouse navigation afterward. This is the most problematic impact
right now.

4. On the Desktop, numpad 7 does take me to the top left corner. From
here, I get dings unless I have it set to line and then numpad 2 will read
each line of icons. I don't normally use mouse keys on the desktop screen,
so maybe this is normal function.

5. In Word 2010, numpad 7 takes me to an area off the document, at the
far left just below all the tool bars.

Any idea how to troubleshoot this? It's impacting my ability here at work.
I already tried restarting WE to see if it was a fluke.

RE: Accessibility: A Reality Check

2015-08-13 Thread Steve Jacobson via Talk
Tom and others,

I think you raised a very important point here. Many do not understand how
very different the evolution of screen readers is between the Microsoft and
the Apple platforms. In addition, many do not understand the much greater
control Apple exercises over development within its platforms, especially
IOS.

Beyond that, I don't think it is accurate to either say that things are
dramatically bad with Microsoft nor that they are perfect. While I have
been involved with technology and the NFB for some time, I am not trying to
state NFB policies, but rather my own observations. I think we have seen
some slippage for the lack of a better term of Microsoft's attention to
accessible lately, and that concern has been raised with them. While it is
frustrating that the Edge Browser is not accessible, I agree with those who
have pointed out that the Edge Browser is not really a good measure of the
priority given to accessibility. It really is still an unfinished product.
Windows Phone 7 is also not a good example of accessibility having a low
priority. That was a sort of starting over for Microsoft in many ways,
and we don't know where that is going to lead yet. However, there seem to
be other cases where accessibility bugs have been left for the next major
release of Office or the next release of the operating system even though
previous releases are still officially supported. The inability to create
or edit an Outlook 2013 signature is one example. This is related to
another bug where the envelope addressing dialog has text that can't be read
or edited in Word as well. For both of these issues, there are workarounds,
but the less technical among us would have difficulty with them. We can
probably accept that in most cases, these are not show stoppers, but it is
also fair to ask, as has been done, how text not being accessible could slip
through their process in the first place. One still feels that
accessibility is an after-thought more than it should be.

We can, with grattitude, applaud Microsoft's efforts to make each operating
system release pretty accessible for the most part. Some of us get
frustrated with how things change, but that frustrates many sighted people
as well. Blind people are not the only ones who have adjusted slowly to the
ribbon, for example, but that is really separate from accessibility, except
possibly for the longer serious of keystrokes that must be used to carry out
some functions. However, the pressure put on screen reader developers by
the constant changing of the basic operating system leaves less time for
other innovations. I don't know what the answer is for that.

While it is true that we are a very, very small market and that there is
really no reason to take us into account in a business model, we can't
afford to let that happen. If we did, many of us would find ourselves
unemployed. What has been done is to amplify our market share through
legislation. Both NFB and ACB have played a role in this. Having laws in
place gives us a lever to raise the priority we would otherwise not have.
This isn't to say that there are not many good intentions within Microsoft,
Apple, and other companies, but I fear we need more than good intentions to
avoid falling too far behind..

The bottom line, though, is that we have to be smart in our approach to
getting accessibility. As has been said, it isn't ever going to be perfect
and we need to pick our battles. On the other hand, we already have more
power than our market share alone would give us, and we have to make sure
that we keep and even expand that power if we want to maintain our ability
to be employed.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

I don't get it!

They will get fixed; just wait for the next release if you are so

I am having a serious problem, and am wondering if some of you guys have
a solution. It's very annoying. I'm getting an error in firefox that
keeps saying unresponsive plugin, shockwave may be busy and all that.
How do i fix this problem. Is there any sort of way to give shockwave a

annoying.

You are apparently unaware of the history at Microsoft! Yeah, the Narrator
program is a dog, so what. Nevertheless, Microsoft wanted to have
accessible products, as Bill Gates announced at a Microsoft conference over
a decade ago. That's why they invited the JAWS and Window-Eyes folks to
participate in development work.

Don't you remember the announcement a year or so ago from GW Micro when
they
unvaled their joint partnership of screen reader accessibility.

Microsoft has bundled Window-Eyes with Office products and gives them a way
free now; what more commitment do all of you expect from Microsoft?

Actually, the only communities that are legally discriminated against the
communities that have people who are disabled. You actually think, that
Microsoft cares about accessibility? Narrator didn't even become anything
usable until Windows 8. It will never be up to the standards of a
Window-Eyes, or even NVDA, because Microsoft absolutely does not want to do
anything. Apple on the other hand, has at least implemented a fully
featured
screen reader and, on every device they create or ship, that screen reader
is available. Voiceover far out does anything that Microsoft word called
accessible. It is only because of companies like AI squared, that we even
have an accessible experience on windows.

My first recommendation would be to try different Window-Eyes mouse boundaries

Subject: Mouse keys are not working as they used to

Hi - My mouse keys aren't working as they used to and I'm not sure what I may
have done or what changed. I'm on Windows 7 64 bit and WE 9.1. I think this
started a couple days ago, but I can't be sure. Here are some examples.

1. If I'm in a Windows Explorer view, hitting numpad 7 used to take me to
the very top of the window on the title bar. Now hitting numpad 7 says top
left, but it takes me to the beginning of the first file or folder name in the
view. Numpad 1 takes me to the last folder or file.

2. In my Outlook 2010 inbox, I'm taken to the top of my inbox with the
point sitting on one of the icons just left of From on the column headers.
Numpad 1 takes me to the last message in my inbox.

3. I use Cisco Jabber for instant messaging and have to use mouse pointer
to read much of it. Numpad 7 used to take me to the top of the window where I
could use numpad 2 to go down the window and see who was messaging me and the
status. I can't get this to work at all. I cannot figure out where the
pointer goes when I hit numpad 7 and it just dings if I try to use mouse
navigation afterward. This is the most problematic impact right now.

4. On the Desktop, numpad 7 does take me to the top left corner. From
here, I get dings unless I have it set to line and then numpad 2 will read
each line of icons. I don't normally use mouse keys on the desktop screen, so
maybe this is normal function.

5. In Word 2010, numpad 7 takes me to an area off the document, at the far
left just below all the tool bars.

Any idea how to troubleshoot this? It's impacting my ability here at work. I
already tried restarting WE to see if it was a fluke.

Jed,
If you don't care about watching Flash based video content on the web in
Firefox, then your best option would be to disable the Shockwave Flash plugin.
This will prevent the plugin from running and crashing. If you want to do this,
open the Tools menu in Firefox with Alt-T. Down Arrow to Add-ons and press
Enter. A new tab will open in Firefox. Turn Browse Mode off and then Tab until
you hear Extensions. Down Arrow until Plugins is selected. Then Tab until you
reach the list of plugins. Next, Down Arrow until you find Shockwave Flash. Tab
to the pull down menu that says Always Activate. Down Arrow to select Never
Activate. Restart (exit and re-open) Firefox and the plugin should be disabled.

Lost Windows 10 sounds

2015-08-13 Thread Michael Massey via Talk
Hi. This morning while perusing the interface to figure out how to check
for updates manually, I unintentionally created a problem of having lost all
sounds.

Here's what happened. I discovered a cumulative update for Windows 10, and
decided to manually restart the computer to install it rather than wait
until 2:30 a.m. tomorrow morning for the computer to shut down and restart
itself. I pressed the restart button to restart the machine and install the
update. Now, after the computer restarted, no sounds are generated.
Narrator won't even launch.

I called the Microsoft disability answer desk and my sighted nephew could
see the desktop icons and even do a remote session with the representative.
My nephew was on the phone for about an hour and no progress was made. The
issue has supposedly been escalated to a higher level technician for a call
back or an e-mail to resolve the issue.

This issue happened using Window-eyes 9.2 under Windows 10 on a Dell
Xps-8500 desktop pc. My Dell Xps-501-L laptop is working fine after
installing the update or else I wouldn't be able to send this e-mail, smile.
I hope someone on this list can help. I wonder if the installation of the
update when the machine was restarted caused the sounds to be muted. ?

Mike M.

Windows 10 lag

I believe you have said that you had the same problem I had with Windows
10 and a progressive lag time while in file explorer. Trying to figure
this whole thing out. Doug at Aisquared now says he knows of three
users with this issue.
Do you have Open book installed on your computer? Do you have a
Synaptics touch pad? What Graphics card do you have?
In my case I have Open Book installed and have a Synaptics touch pad
that also had issues when I had Windows 10 installed. I have a external
mouse plugged in and have it set to disable the touch pad when it is
plugged in. When I had Windows 10 installed this setting would not
stick so the touch pad was enabled on each restart of the computer. I
have Intel HD 4600 on board graphics.
I am considering taking Doug up on his offer of sending him my laptop to
try to figure out the problem. I sent GW my desktop in the past when I
had WE issues that they claimed were computer issues and not WE issues.
Turned out it was a WE issue and they got it working.

You have to do an upgrade before you can do a clean install, because you
have to retrieve the Win 10 product key. However there is an option when
upgrading to keep nothing, I don't know if that is equivalent to a clean
install. If you have WE 9.1 you can order a CD of 9.2 or contact support
and they can give you a download link for 9.2, but if yu are not current
you will have to purchase the upgrade.

Google surveys show that users get frustrated if Google searches take more

That's her problem, not
Microsoft's!

they can give you a download link for 9.2, but if yu are not current you
will have to purchase the upgrade.

clean install of windows 10 and w e.

2015-08-13 Thread net bat via Talk

will w e 9.0 even install on windows 10?
every time i have done a in place install of any version of windows i had too
many problems. windows 10 is no different.
i can't use one drive. administrator permissions change and will not allow
access to the one drive folders. so i can't download any of the files from the
server.

i can't change system sounds for the same reason. access denied.
i don't have these problems with my windows 10 tablet.

if i could at least get w e 9.0 it installed then install 9.2 over it then i
would be able to do a fresh install of windows 10.

i don't have a 9.2 disk.
i wish aisquared would have a downloadable full installation iso i could burn
to disk. besides saveing time over the mail it would help to save the
envirinment.

Bil,

As long as your maintenance is current you can get the latest product. Although
if you are under maintenance you should have received a DVD in the mail as I
did. They charge $199 for maintenance which entitles you to two version
upgrades during the course of a year.
