RE: App updates

2017-09-06 Thread John Farley via Talk
Hi Olusegun,

Thank you for confirming this.

>From what I have read about VFO they will have a very tight agreement with
the ex GW-Micro key partners and employees. I understand that competing
products are not their favoured option and VFO lawyers will do all they can
to prevent any deviation from their wishes.

If Doug etc. will have the energy to start again and potentially hit legal
buffers from VFO can only be left to their decision.

As far as my use of software over many years is concerned the demise of
Window-Eyes was the most dissapointing change that has occured.

This seems a strange concept for the USA as competition is usually the way
to improve productivity and reduce prices.

John, you are absolutely right! Sometimes, once a company has been bought
and sold, the previous owner(s) may not even be allowed to ever start
another business in the same market. It all depends on how the lawyers word
the signed agreement(s) and whether or not the signed document(s) is/are
acceptable to the seller(s).

It's possible that Doug may never again touch Window-Eyes, but, if he so
desires and has sufficient financial backing, he could CREATE A BRAND-NEW
accessible something and name it whatever he cares!

A case in point: After Arkenstone, developer of Openbook died, its previous
owner created Bookshare!

Law is a donkey, and it does a poor job of riding itself to town! Looks
good on paper, but a trillion loopholes for any person who cares to give it
a shake.

Sincerely,
Olusegun

RE: App updates

2017-09-06 Thread John Farley via Talk
Hello Mark,

Clearly I have no idea of any undertakings that Doug might have made when he
left the employment of VFO. However, it would be usual business practice in
the UK for an undertaking not to take part in the development of any
competing products within a specified period after employment has been
terminated. I would doubt if such a period of time has elapsed yet. Note
that I do not know if such practice takes place in the USA.

There must be a reason why the previous key personnel of GW-Micro are not
seen on any lists any more.

HI All,
Definintely interested!! And I wonder, now that Doug has left VFO, maybe
he's trying to get backing to continue window eyes journey?? I really hope
so, for it's a far superior product to jaws. The only thing counting in
jaws favour in my humble opinion now, is its OCR feature!!
Lets revive window eyes, and keep it going!
Thanks to those techies like Rod who can help us with this!

the response I just received, no more updates to app central will be allowed.
Even while the web site is active, this seems to be just an unnecessary
termination of services which all of the current Window-Eyes users are using.
I already posted all of the updates a week ago, but aparently no more updates
will be approved.

At no point in my statement did I attack freedom of expression, only if the

of expression is a human right which should not be denied to anyone.

In the UK it is apparent from our own news channels, the various US news

In light of that the signature I have questioned is an overtly political

Hello Mr. Farley:

Freedom of Expression, Speech, Assembly, Religion and a trillion other
freedoms exist. That's the case at least in a Western plural democracy to
which many of us subscribe either by doctrine, or through whatever informed
decisions we elect to make.

The only freedom humans do not have is FREEDOM FROM DEATH! If they do, the
most powerful and well-situated ones amongst us would have purchased it all
for themselves and their heirs alive and yet unborn! So, sire, let whatever
FREEDOM there is ring from the hilltops, through the prairies, mountains,
cliffs, lakes, rivers, oceans near and far, below and above the sky, and
everywhere humans dare to set their feet.

It is true that my freedom begins where the first person's stops; however,
NOT very many humans recognise this for a fact and the cacophonous rumblings
continue. Let FREEDOM ring; let each person elect to hear the pealing
sounds of its bell, or else ignore.

Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado

What is special about it being a service for blind people; we are not that
different to the rest of the world, we just have less ability to see than
others.
Let a sighted person get driving lessons from a professional and see if they
can get that for nothing.

For both kinds of things you can also get a well-meaning friend to help you
out but that will not always be of the same level of competence.

Best of luck Steve.

Hi Tom,

Seems we're not allowed to make money. I offer the service for people who
want to get up and running quickly with their screen reader, without asking
endless questions.

Yes, of course it's all out there for free, but why not even unsubscribe
from this list and just use the inbuilt JAWS help? I think the more
services there are, the better, whether free or not.

All the best

According to this mentality there shouldn't be a charge for anything.
How many things in your life don't help you out in one way or another?

RE: Jaws migration

2017-05-20 Thread John Farley via Talk
Hello Jo.

Sorry migration is not quite that easy.

Window-Eyes will remain on your PC / laptop until you remove it.

You will get various e-mails from VFO group telling you that you will be
migrated and providing a JAWS activation code for you to allow JAWS to run for
more than the 40 minutes default demo time.
You will need to download the JAWS installation program to your computer
yourself from where they tell you.

From what you have said you should already have received these e-mails.
Are they in your junk folder?

Well, now all of you officially know that Window-Eyes is really dead! But,
why couldn't most of you (mostly well-educated and intelligent) folks
figure that out for yourselves?

That is by no means a silly question. Analysis of news stories, by
independent researchers, over the past 6 months reveal that smart people as
well as stupid people embrace "fake news" with equal relish. Why is that?

Also, lots of folks still believe that President Trump is "doing a good job"
in spite of the fact that nothing has been really accomplished so far and
that Trump apparently has no clue about the facts at hand.

It is an intriguing question, pondered by sociologists, why approximately
half of the population, in any given community at any given time, will
believe "crazy stuff" if asserted by a "figure of authority".

Richard,

You have missed the point again.
These people you would like to work from home will require paying; they will
not do it for nothing.
Not only that, if they are working from home their employers may well need to
supply their kit and internet access for them to ensure the correct level of
security is available.
Either that or the service company works shifts to provide a greater level of
hours covered.
That will cost.

If your need is that urgent then it may be incumbent on you to call them during
their working hours.

Working as a blind person in the sighted world of computing is a hard slog and
not as easy as you may think.

I have tried to provide the hands on help in the past. It was not successful
from my viewpoint.
It often turns out that in fact you finish up teaching basic PC skills as well
as how to use a screen reader, which is not what I signed up for.

I will provide written help on user lists such as this, but no longer hands on

I do, very occasionally, stand in as a trainer in a local class for teaching

Richard,

Let's move away from the screen reader aspect here slightly.

What you are really asking for is for some hands on training on a new purchase
to be provided as part of the purchase price. It certainly cannot be provided
at any cost to the company employing the trainer.

Would you, in fact, be prepared to pay the enhanced rate?
Remember, some might not.
In which case there would need to be a two, or more, tiered pricing structure.

In the final analysis you should remember that there is no such thing as a free
lunch; it is paid for by somebody.

RE: FW: whole migrating situation

2017-05-16 Thread John Farley via Talk
Richard,

Currently Apple products come with built in speech, as you may know. That
has been a native part of the operating system for many years, if not from
their inception.

However, Microsoft Windows did not originally come with a speech capability.
Microsoft are slowly adding Narrator functionality, but because it is not
designed into the operating system from the beginning it does not have good
enough functionality for anything other than the simplest.

Therefore the various software houses that wrote and sold the solutions for
the problem came up with speech reading software.

I cannot think of anyone who would provide their effort and brain power full
time for many years for nothing.
How would you expect them to feed and clothe themselves and their families?

~The object of your ire should be Microsoft, not the screen reader
manufacturers.

It is not a matter whether to accept or not to accept, sighted people do not
need extra software to use a computer. Blind people need extra software and
even though I work can pay for any software I feel blind people should be
given software so they can survive in this tech world. I've read many of
your e-mails and you get mad like me if mlb messes up and you are
completely right however you have all the time in the world since and I'm
not trying to offend you, but once you told me that you don't work and if I
am wrong now I'm sorry. You shouldn't have to go a million steps to be able
use a computer if you are blind. Sighted people all they do is click and
drag all day long. If they use any key strokes it is the windows key
strokes since they don't need to know any key strokes.

With all due respect, you're sounding like a child. One thing I have
realized from participating on this list, is the variety of needs and
experiences WE users have. So while you and I don't use mouse keys (for
example), others do. I probably use %2 of WE's functionality, so probably
any screen reader I use will work for my needs or wants, but others need far

No one is forcing you to purchase anything, but likely, you will have to
adapt to new technology whether that technology is adaptive or commercial
(meaning for the sighted public as well).

Hello John and others,

I've just been informed that if you are in the U.K. or Australia you may
submit your request to migrate to JAWS in the same manner as those in the
U.S. Meaning simply go to:

http://www.gwmicro.com/window-eyes/migrate/

Read about your options and click on the migrate form or simply go directly
there with the following:

http://www.gwmicro.com/Window-Eyes/migrateform/

Be as detailed as you can about your situation and submit the form.

If you are in other countries you are still being asked to contact your
local VFO dealer to discuss the migration path details.

Regards,
Doug

I don't think you said anything about braille. Braille has always been

Yes, the new method is good, although not so new now.
It works very well when you want to copy or move a large block of a screen.

Hi John,

I believe Gmail is an IMap account type, meaning that its folder structure
is mirrored (or duplicated) within any client software in which you set it
up.
I have a Hotmail account, which is also IMap.
Therefore, while you cannot force its folder structure to appear within any
folders already present on the client you use, you can cause all incoming
messages to appear in a folder view, say, of unread messages.
I'm using Outlook which comes with Office 365, and perhaps you can do the
same within Outlook 2010.
I can highlight the folder called Search, press the Applications key, and
there I get a pull-down menu listing of views by which I can view my
messages.
One view is called Unread, and this would group all incoming unread
messages into the Search folder.
Wouldn't this do the trick? (smile)

I hope this helps,

Rod

Hello list,

I have encountered an issue with Window-Eyes and Outlook 2010 and using
Account Settings.
I believe I will be able to resolve the issue with sighted assistance, but
would like the issue to be known about.

I have been unable to configure my Outlook 2010 account on my Windows 7 PC
to work as I would like with my Gmail account.

The current way it is set up is as follows:

I have two standard BT Internet e-mail accounts which both go into the same
set of folders, e.ge. The same in-box, sent e-mails etc.
Then there is a separate Gmail account which goes into its own set of
folders, including in-box etc.

I can select which e-mail account to send from by selecting them from the
box if I do not want to use the default e-mail account. Outlook will
also use the account an e-mail was sent to as the account when
replying to an e-mail that I have received.

What I would like to do is to include the Gmail account into the same set of
Folders as the other two accounts.

I have tried many different methods without success so far. There was one
suggestion which said to use "account
Settings" to do the job. Unfortunately Window-Eyes would not show the
details that were present. I got sighted assistance to help at that point.

Does anyone know how to do this with Window-Eyes?

Subject: Re: WinEyes and licensing

Apparently, GW and their licensing deals quite differently from one
place to the other.

Locally, Yes we can install WE in a locale version, on how many
computers we want. But should I decide to go for an English version, I
am under restrictions of something like three or five computers. Believe
me, I have discussed this with the local dealer, and even took the whole
issue directly to Doug, questioning why you in the UK can run unlimited
installations of the English version, and in one of your neighboring
countries, we are all the sudden restricted on the very same version.
And, yes we too are well aware of all what a Copyright means.

I am not going to argue their rights to restrict. I just wonder why they
restrict the paid version, whereas I am free to download as many copies
of the screen reader I ever desire, in ANY of the supported languages,
if I go for the free version. If I, in my local area want to

 BUY

an English version, I am under restrictions. Do I want the very same
English, fully working version, and I download the

 FREE

version, hey now I have no further restrictions from the manufacturer.
That is where my logic ends.

Go ahead, restrict the users, but do so all over the board. And at
least, if you want to restrict, why only restrict the paid version,
leaving the free version unrestricted? Doesn't that encourage the user
to go for the free version?

And all you said about copyright, does make sense. Except from the fact
that people in all coutries, can get the unrestricted versions for free,
only if you pay, you likely will be messing with the Copyright, so let's
have you restricted. Smile. I just don't get the logic in that. OK then,
it is not of the biggest issues either, only I wonder if that will
encourage people in such areas to keep paying. And that was my real
initial point, that we might see less people paying, and eventually that
might lead to the fall of the development's priority, on behalf of the
screen reader.

The best thing, like I stated, would have been if they simply made one
big and multi-lingual version, leaving the users the chance of deciding
which installation or functionality will be most suitable for her at any
time. First they have given all language-specific versions away for free
the last few years, I am not sure wherein the show-stopper would be, in
making it all combined into one and same license. After all, many other
pieces of software are released in multi-lingual versions. And even when
tied to one language, your license would typically be equal, no matter
which language you decide to run.

Should I - for instance - want to run Windows itself in German, even if
I was located in the North-Americas, I would be entitled the exact same
rights and restrictions as if I was running an English version.
Microsoft - to all my knowledge - does not give me one set of rules for
a Spanish version of Windows, and if I happen to live outside Spain,
another set of rules. Or, if I want to run in french, even if my area is
mostly running Italian, Microsoft would not get far if they posed a
drastic reduction in my rights.

If they want to go International, and apparently they do, then they
might want to revise some of the ways they deal with the linguistic
issues. What's more, did they develop one multi-lingual version, it
could have saved them a load of extra work on every new release. every
user could get one and same version, so they did not have to make
specific packages for every locality. When they released version 9.5.4,
they even ended up in a situation, where they released the locale
version over here, with some of the files in English. That caused some
issues, which they had to fix. Now, had they only one worldwide version,
such would not have been an issue at all.

One way it could have been done, is that you would get the license for
the software, and then install a Main Core. Then you would download a
set of files, holding the language-specific files. Or, these could have
been packed on the installation DVD, did you go for a hard-copy
installation. If you only use one language, your installation would only
hold the files for that language. for those who use five languages, it
would mean a few extra KBytes of disk space, as the installation would
include a few extra files. In modern technology, that means nothing.

Far as I am aware, and

RE: WinEyes and licensing

2017-02-04 Thread John Farley via Talk
David,

North America and most of Europe, including the UK can run Window-Eyes
without authentication on each occasion that the version being used is
correctly licenced. That is, without a dongle or other mechanical means of
licence authentication. This may also be the case in Australia and New
Zealand, but I am not too sure of that. There may be a Knowledge Base item
which details where this applies.

This was done originally as there are many parts of the world outside of the
North American continent where software piracy, or euphemistically software
sharing, is rife.

Software producers, not just GW-Micro, follow such a practice in order to
protect their income stream, which is a perfectly valid think to do.

As far as the accent of the speech is concerned I have most of my speech
output set to use UK English, although I need to accept the use of an
American accent for the Window-Eyes elements of the speech output.
Like the UK the USA has many localised accents in use in pronouncing the
spoken word.
Most people can accept the use of such localised accents.

The real difference in the use of English between our two continents is the
simplified spelling of many words used in the USA as opposed to that being
used in the UK, where the spellings originated from (smile).

Nope. All messages, menus and so forth, will be in ONE, and only ONE
language. The voices are there only to let you read other languages.

Yet, say you have turned on Eloquence french, due to you mainly working
with French documents and websites. If your WinEyes is installed under
an English license, all the WinEyes produced messages, will be send as
English phrases to a French synthesizer. Try for a moment yourself, and
see what it all will sound like.

You don't think there are all that many phrases, so it can't be that
much of an issue? Well, try to scroll down a website. All the screen
reader produced messages like:

 Link,

 Paragraph,

 Combobox,

 Editbox,

 Read-Only,

and so forth, are send in the language of your screen reader
installation, no matter which language is supported by your currently
chosen voice.

Or, try it under your favorite Email program. The phrases like:

 Read,

 Unread,

 Attachment,

And so on, again are send in the language of your installation. Try to
listen too a Spanish voice, or an Italian one, pronounce the English
phrases. Judge for yourself.

Been the trouble with WE for all times, that they never understood
people could have more than one language, and would need to switch
several times in a day. Hey all you Canadians, you would at least know
what it means to read more than one language.

Greatest thing would be if they could release a multi-lingual license -
holding all supported languages. And now, if they then could let it even
be set to switch automatically to the language supported by the
currently active synth, they would have done a great job. But all my
requests for such features, have been met with loads of excuses and
words about being unable, due to licensing and worries of piracy. Not
sure what would make such a multi-lingual version more vulnerable to
piracy, but that is the explanation GW has been offering me for the last
decade.

Well, just wanted to illustrate a point for you all. Other International
and non-English users will know what i am talking about, and may be able
to offer you more illustrative cases.

Yet, may I ask you who are all English-speaking users, how would you
accept if I released a screen reader that gave all its menus and
internal messages in German? So every time you browsed the net, or every
time you pressed the Ctrl-Home in a text document, you got the phrases
from the screen reader, with German text pronounced by your English
voice? Here, let me save you all the hazzle. Simply let your current
English voice read the following messages, and imagine your day being
filled with this kind of working conditions. Then, you please come back
and tell me how many of you would pay for the product. Smile.

Yes, it does seem as if those who sell products to earn a living, cannot
resist the temptation to change it, and changing it sometimes is for the
better, but many times, the changes is one or two steps backwards.

Marketing puts pressure on Development to come up with something NEw NEW
NEW, and so Development does, and Marketing is Happy, but is the end
user always happy?

Most people that use a computer, are not Computer Geeks. They use the
computer, to do their jobs, or to do their household duties, Bill paying
etc.

and when Microsoft, or who ever comes out with their latest offering,
people are forced to re=learn what they had already learned in the
earlier edition of the same software.

I talk with people all over the country, and I do this on my job. And
computers is what we talk about. Time and time again, people have told
me, they do not like Big Big changes. Changes big enough to require
them to look at the latest edition and wonder where they start, because
the new edition is so different.

Now it takes three steps to do what once took two, or even one.

In the case of Screen Readers, now our Readers read even less of the
program than it did before.

this is what I mean by going backwards.

I have no solution, as it seems that Change is the best way to gain
new customers but once these customers are familiar with the program,
any major changes are not welcome, unless those changes streamline the
work the program does for the user.

One Step forward and Two Steps back?

this is not Progress, just in case anyone is confused.

take note of Window-Eyes does not exist!

Hi Rod,

I am trying to get at my contacts.
I wish to rationalise them as over the years they have come from many
sources and there are quite a number of entries in there on some of the

Hi John,

Can you say precisely which features of iCloud you are trying to access on
your PC, for example, iCloud Drive, or Notes or Reminders, or are you trying
to sync data between your PC and your IPhone?
As you can see, there's a lot to it. Smile

With respect,

RE: Ranking Screen Readers In Windows10 Anniversary Update: The Results Will Surprise You!

2016-08-10 Thread John Farley via Talk
Vaughan, thank you for that insight into that article.

My own, unreasearched view, is that any free screen reader will not be able to
complete the full role of tasks that a more professional screen reader can.

Although I do not use JAWS, it is not an acronym for Job Access to Work with
Screen Reader for nothing.

I am a diehard Window-Eyes user and have been for many years, in a professional
capacity and now as a retired person.
I would not move away from Window-Eyes without a much better incentive than a
single review, which it now appears, is not from the most knowledgeable of
sources.

Community, please take your choice.

Thanks for the post.

I do think we should be cautious about this. Apart from the fact that the guy
is a teacher - teacher of what and of whom - his credentials are not clearly
identified. So his views are just as good or just as bad as any one elses.

Many of us use apps not included in his discussion - excel, outlook, other mail
and spreadsheet applications and so on. Whilst it is clear that the discussion
is about Windows 10 anniversary, and as such is narrow in context, it is far
from complete.

The bias is clear: if it is free - it must be better, and he has only ever used
JFW of the paid screen readers.
Microsoft's commitment to accessibility is questonable. Yes: Narrator has made
improvements which are long overdue, and there are knowledgeable blind people
commiting to Narrator. But - no braille, no ability to configure it for
specific apps, and so many other shortcomings which Window-Eyes and JFW have
attempted to resolve over the years.

The discussion is an important one, as the industry is in a state of change.
But: we should just treat the comments for what they are - someone's legitimate
opinion.

Hello list,

Can the entire process of upgrading a PC in a Windows 7 Pro environment to
the Anniversary Edition of Windows 10 Pro be done with Window-Eyes alone?
That is, there is no need to run any other screen reader in order to

The media creation tool worked. As I'm writing this, windows 10
anniversary addition is being installed. Thanks for the tip!

I used the media creation tool when I first installed windows 10, but I
didn't scroll down far enough on the Microsoft page to see this tool
when I tried this upgrade.

Is it possible you have turned up your volume for system sounds in the
mixer?
If you open the system tray with Insert-S, arrow down to the speakers icon,
right click it and arrow to open volume mixer and press Enter, you will be
in the dialog where you can find the slider to control the volume of system
sounds.
Turning it down will at least make your experience more tolerable. smile

Hi Dave:

These calls have nothing to do with your system.
They pick random phonenumbers and they call them.
I used to get quite a few calls from them, but not any more.
I am not sure why, but it may have something to do with the last caller. He
had been calling our number for days and we would just hang up. Finally, on
one call, I asked what company he worked for.
When he said "microsoft" I just told him he was lying and hung up.

Chris,

I agree with you. I haven't had that many Windows 10 updates and they
have never stopped me from doing anything. When you go to shutdown, you
might get a notification asking if you want to update and shutdown or
just shutdown. I always pick the update and shutdown option, and my
Wife always picks the shutdown only option so that I have to catch her
computer up with updates every once and a while.

RE: I have had enough

2016-03-23 Thread John Farley via Talk
Hello Neville,

Please also take care about what Microsoft brings in at update time.

You may well find that it will slip in the upgrade to Windows 10 as an
optional upgrade. This is pre-checked and will need to be unchecked on each
occasion if you want to prevent it.

You could probably stop this, but as Microsoft seem to change its name
occasionally it will only creep back into the optional upgrade list.

If you are asking about the WE update, mine is in
C:\Users\Carol\AppData\Local\Temp.

You should be able to look in your own user directory and search for it
if you have show hidden files and folders turned on, or when in your own
user folder, press windows-R and type in %appdata%.
This will open the appdata folder and then you can find local and press
enter and then temp and press enter. When on the temp folder name, I
created a shortcut to my desktop because I use it enough that I don't
like having to go through all of these steps. .

RE: malware bytes accessibility

2016-02-24 Thread John Farley via Talk
Hello Tom,

Are you using the free or pro version, which is paid for? The Pro version
does run at all times and so should give a better level of protection.

I ask because I have found it very difficult, if not impossible, to get the
necessary id and key installed into this later version. I have only been
able to install them into the old version.

Unfortunately neither the software distributors nor the manufactures were
able to help me.

I'm running the latest version (2.2) and it works fine with Window-Eyes
9.3 On Windows 7 and 10.

Regarding the recent vulnerability? Here's the blog post at their site.
If you have the premium version you can solve this by turning on
Self-protection under Settings Advanced. If you don't have premium you
Don't have any protection other than an after the fact manual scan.

Subject: malware bytes accessibility

Hey guys,
Well it appears malware bytes is not accessible any more. I am running
we 8.4, and whenever i try and access it, it literally does nothing. I
went to the system tray in windows 7, and tried several times to do a
left and right mouse click, and my system just keeps saying taskbar.
Then i hit the desktiop icon, and now it just came up, but there are no
accessible buttons. When i tab around, nothing, arrow up and own,
nothing. I'm running this on a win 7 machine. Any ideas?

John,

The cloud is just a generic term for any off-site server you use to
backup and store data, either just for yourself or for sharing. iCloud,
Amazon, One drive, Google drive, Dropbox, SendSpace, and so on are all
the same thing. The only difference with iCloud and Amazon is that my
iPhone can automatically backup to iCloud every time it's plugged in and
all Amazon MP3 purchases are automatically put on their cloud servers.
They all have free stub services designed to suck you into purchasing
more space once you fill them up.

Regards,
Tom

RE: Is Window-Eyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-17 Thread John Farley via Talk
Tom,

You have mentioned two different applications here.

Amazon itself is a web site which then accesses its own internal databases
to handle user request. They would have no need at all to utilize any cloud
content. It would only add to their speed of response to the end user.

ITunes is a program run on your PC which then accesses the Apple databases.
Once on their databases there will be no need to further access the cloud.

It might be interesting to consider what "the cloud" is.
While I am not an expert in modern nomenclature my understanding of it is
that it is simply a number of remote servers on some server farm somewhere
which we, the users, do not need to worry about the location of.
This is opposed to a server farm somewhere which we know the name of, if not
its location.

The term is being used to mystify the concept. After all, simple computing
no longer mystifies the man in the street so let's find something else to do
that.

I welcome any correction to my undrstanding.

My understanding is that the WE Apps are just ways of making the use of WE
in some circumstances easier to navigate and use. I do not believe that they
use ICloud at all. Of course, there may be a number of WE Apps that do
require use of iCloud, but these I expect to be exceptions.

FW: Is WindowEyes Causing All Internet And Other Crashes?

2016-02-17 Thread John Farley via Talk
As with others, I do not know the cause for the issues with WE and IE at the
moment.

However, I have made a change to my PC environment a few hours ago and those
issues seem to have gone away.

I have decided that the potential advantages of the interface between my PC
and my iPhone with iCloud set up on the PC is not worth the effort it takes
up and leaves too many things that cannot be done via the PC.

I have therefor fully removed iCloud from my PC.

While it is still only a few hours the issues seem to have gone away.

I do not know if this is just a coincidence.

Subject: Outlook Enhance add in

Hello all,

I keep receiving an alert when using Outlook 2016 with WE9.3 that the
outlook enhanced add in was not properly installed and to restart Outlook as
says was corrected; but, each time use Outlook 2016 this message comes back
up from time to time.

So wonder is it a WE9.3 issue or Outlook issue and how can it be fixed so
stop prompting me?

Thanks.

OT Using Virtual Keyboards

2016-02-04 Thread John Farley via Talk
Hello Chris,

I see that in the note below you have:
"
"Sent from my iPad"

Did you use the virtual keyboard that comes with an IPad or did you use an
attached keyboard.

I ask as I find virtual keyboards too time consuming to make their use of a
great deal of use and prefer to use an actual keyboard on a PC.

Thank you in advance.

RE: tool tip trouble

2016-02-03 Thread John Farley via Talk
Hello Mike,

On Windows 7 and 8 there is a tool you can get to remove that irritating
item.

Take a look at http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

While I have used this to good effect on my Windows 7 PC it is clearly not
software supported by GW Micro and will be done at your risk.
Having said that, I have had no bad impact from it.

The only thing you then need to remember each time you do a Microsoft update
is that Microsoft will make upgrade to Windows 10 a pre-checked item in the
optional software list which will need to be unchecked each time that you do
not want it.

When I'm in my email program, sometimes the message only reads half. The
culprit is the "Get Windows 10" button. I have to remember to hit alt-f4,
before going to the desktop and opening the email program. Maybe this is
your problem. Hope this helps. The Windows 10 button is a problem, but I
don't know how to get rid of it. I'm using Windows 7 and like it.

Will WE 9.3 work well with Win 7? Guess that depends upon who you ask.
There are some that WE 9.3 fails far too often. It is said that there are
others where WE 9.3 rarely fails.

However, judging from this list, those running Win 7 seem to experience some
difficulties with WE 9.3.

Perhaps others will post their own observations.

My own opinion and experience is that WE 9.3 is still a product under
development and is not yet ready for the Market.

Milage may vary, and Others might have different opinions.

I used Vipre for a while until I found out that it had some big problems.
After hearing that is was not reliable, I removed it and ran Malwarebytes
which found twenty some serious issues. Vipre had been telling me that
everything was fine.

If you're still running XP, I recommend Bit Defender. I have always found
Microsoft Security Essentials to be friendly and to work well with Vista and
Windows 7 and I now use Windows Defender with Windows 10. I have had no
virus problems, since I don't take chances and don't browse risky web sites.

is to do with Window-Eyes preventing something.

Hi John,

I use the latest version of Malwarebytes. Once you learn its quirks, it is
pretty much as accessible as the old version.

And remember Malware bytes is not an anti-virus, so you need another
package if you just use that.

WE9.3 Outlook 2010 list heading

2015-12-18 Thread John Farley via Talk
Dear list,

I have installed WE 9.3.1 on my Windows 7 pro PC with Office 2010 Pro also
in use on it.

When looking through a list of e-mails in Outlook 2010 the words "from",
"subject" and "date" etc. have now reappeared.

I cannot find out how to switch these back to not appearing.

Can someone please remind me?

Thank you.

Subject: Downloading WE 9.2

Dear list,

I have a fully licenced version of Window-Eyes 9.2.1 running on my PC.

I am considring migrating to Windows 10 as it looks as if the users on this
list are now on it without too much incident.

I have two questions:

How do I download and not re-install a current version of the software. I
would like this just in case I have any issues when on Windows 10?

Does the migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10 work effectively? While I
have read the literature about it there may have been some quirks that
actual use bought to light.

Many thanks in advance.

FW: opening programs and having to alt tab into them anyway

2015-11-03 Thread John Farley via Talk
Scot and Tom,

The behaviour described by Scot below has also been happening to me and
started at around the same time.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with all updates.
Currently with WE 9.2.1

I did not report it as there were other issues going on which struck me as
more important.

I've never seen this or heard of anyone else seeing it. They'd all be
screaming if this were a common problem. Unfortunately I can't imagine
why launching a program from the desktop doesn't bring it into focus.

I have an IPhone 5, but I expect it is the same.

Then select each message you want to delete.

That should do the trick.
